THERE REALLY IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN PAISLEY TOWN CENTRE!

O’NEILL’S SERVICES

We turn the spotlight on another of our family run and independent businesses in Paisley town centre which still stands the test of time while embracing the technology of the future…

Another independent business in Paisley which still bears the family name, O’Neills Services can be found in the heart of the Piazza Shopping Centre.

“My father started a dry cleaning business in Bridge of Weir more than 50 years ago,” explained owner Paul O’Neill. “Then eventually I joined the family businesses with the shoe repair and key-cutting service.

“We benefitted from a lucky break back in 1992 when one of the tenants pulled out just before the opening of The Paisley Centre, and we managed to secure the unit.

“We then expanded and opened another shop in the Piazza Shopping Centre 22 years ago, where we still remain today.

“We grew the shoe repair and key-cutting business quickly to also offer engraving, watch repairs, batteries and straps.

“While the skills and techniques may have changed, shoe repairs remains one of the oldest recycling businesses around, even the Romans repaired their sandals.

“The construction of shoes and the

materials used is always changing so we pride ourselves on keeping our skills up to date, using the latest technology and Vibram materials to offer our customers the best service possible.

“Autumn and winter are always busiest with shoe repairs as the heavier footwear is retrieved from the back of the wardrobe, but it’s better than fast fashion and it’s a small simple step to encourage people to be more eco-friendly.”

As one of only four approved Vibram sole factor repair shops in Scotland, we are kept very busy all year round repairing and fitting Vibram sole units to trekking shoes and walking boots.

Keeping up with advances in technology is not only at the forefront of the shoe repair side of the business.

“We already offer a very comprehensive key-cutting service,” added Paul. “We can make high security keys on site with a quick turnaround at a good value price.

“And we’re embracing the latest technology to expand to supply locks and offer lock fitting, as well as supplying car remote keys and programming to most car manufacturers too.

“I am always looking to expand my knowledge and can often be found at a conference or seminar to make sure we

are staying ahead of the pack; we really are investing heavily in the future of the business too.

“The difference between ourselves and online or national retailers is that to us, every single customer really is important, no job is too small and we will always go the extra mile for our customers.

“Having started trading in Bridge of Weir my dad, Ralph O’Neill, worked in the business until he was well into his 70’s, and I am still serving some of his Bridge of Weir customers in Paisley today.

“People know that they can rely on us for good, honest advice and a friendly service as well as value for money.

“Yes, Paisley is the largest town in Scotland but for me, I have been living in and around Paisley all my life, it’s a privilege to be able to serve my own community.”

For more than 50 years, Gael Home Interiors on Orchard Street has been a one-stop shop for all your home and home furnishing needs

Independent and family run, the store boasts an 8,000 sq. ft showroom filled with the latest trends in furniture, wallpaper, lighting and soft furnishings.

Owned by brothers Abid and Azeem, the family initially took over the business in the early 90s.

“At the time, there was also a Stirling and a Glasgow store so myself and Azeem were sent there to learn the trade from the bottom up,” said Abid.

“All the existing staff were experts in the product ranges on offer so we learned from the best in the business, from wallpaper to paint and lighting.”

Fast forward 30 years and the brothers have expanded the remaining Paisley store to include furniture such as beds and bedroom furniture, dining sets and occasional furniture such a coffee tables, while in recent years also adding a new collection of sofas in both leather and upholstery.

With a complete range of lighting, mirrors, accessories and artworks to complete the look, a visit to their showroom is a must.

Plus, they also offer a one stop decorating centre in store too with more than 600

There’s no such time as a quiet spell here at Gael Home Interiors.

“But then we’re into the new year, spring cleans and a refresh in style for the new year and then before we know where we are, summer is on the way and the garden needs spruced up.

“We’re proud to be part of the business community here in Paisley, all the local businesses are very supportive of one another.

lines of wallpaper including Italian heavyweight and brands like Rach, Fine Décor, Versace and Belgravia alongside paints for both indoors and outdoors and a hardware section.

“We are the only local agents for San Martino furniture, and also stock Highgate, and Siesta, offering and offer quality products at a competitive price, but with the added value of a personal service,” added Abid.

“We change our stock frequently so there is always something new and we like to keep up with the latest styles and trends.

“The main benefit of shopping locally is that you can see and feel our products, not order off the internet and then something

completely different arrives, the quality you see in store is what will be delivered to your home.

“We do price match to ensure we remain competitive but we believe we offer great value for money.

“And keeping our customers happy is our top priority, we’ve had many loyal customers for years and now we’re serving their own grown up families too.”

“We’re busy all year round – it’s always busy once the nights start getting darker, the lighting goes on, people spot some painting that needs done then they want to get their homes looking good for Christmas,” said Abid.

“There’s no such time as a quiet spell here at Gael Home Interiors.”

With local and long-serving staff who are knowledgeable across all product lines, the team at Gaels pride themselves on their customer service and quick delivery times.

“Donny and Sandra have been with us a long time, Donny was here before even myself and Azeem,” added Abid.

“There are not many independent stores left with this variety and quality of products and staff as knowledgeable about what we offer.

“And if we don’t have what you are looking for, we will work with our suppliers to get it for you as soon as possible.

“It’s easy to shop local and support the great independent businesses here in Paisley, and know you are also supporting and contributing to the local community too.

A family run company, their business and reputation is built on superior service, quality floor products and expert installation – one of only a few carpet and flooring companies in the country to be part of the Guild of Master Craftsmen.

At their Causeyside Street showroom, they have a large range of flooring products on display such as LVT, Moduleo, Yukon, Egger, Solid Wood, Engineered Wood, Click Laminate Carpets, Vinyl and many others.

Owner Iain Hill explains…

“Prestige Floors has been based in Paisley for nearly 30 years now, starting o in a small building in Neilston Road to where we are now at the corner of Causeyside Street and George Street,” said Iain.

“I started this business with my wife Karen when our children were just babies and now we have three of them working alongside us, each bringing their own expertise to the company.

“In terms of trends, we have definitely noticed that carpets are making a big comeback with stair runners being the latest style, a great statement for the most overlooked area in the house,”

“We have always employed local people from Paisley or the surrounding areas and now have more than 20 sta , some of whom have been with us from the very beginning.

“We have noticed since the COVID lockdowns that more and more people are investing in home improvements, and we believe this is due to more people still working from home and spending more time there so they want to create their own safe haven, their own little sanctuary.

“We o er commercial as well as domestic flooring which gives us a great opportunity to travel around and do some interesting jobs, recently just completing a private school in Edinburgh with bespoke tartan carpets.

“Occasionally we even stay overnight while working away and it’s nice to experience somewhere di erent and enjoy a little relaxation at the same time.

“Another job we have recently completed was Gin 71 in Glasgow city centre where we fitted herringbone LVT tartan carpets and industrial vinyls.”

“We have a great list of regular clients along with landlords, nursing homes, bars and restaurants as well as a lot of loyal customers who trust us to look after their flooring needs at home.

As well as commercial flooring, we o er Carpets, Vinyls, Laminate and Hardwood flooring as well as Luxury Vinyl Flooring, we even o er artificial grass.”

“In terms of trends, we have definitely noticed that carpets are making a big comeback with stair runners being the latest style, a great statement for the most overlooked area in the house,” added Iain.

“Laminate flooring is still popular after all this time with prices being the cheapest they have been in years.”

Using only specially trained manufacturer approved installers to fit all carpets and flooring, customer service is key to their success.

“We like to o er the personal touch so you will always be able to deal with us direct, we believe in quality over quantity so all our products are backed by the manufacturer and we also give a year’s fitting guarantee on all fits too,” said Iain.

“And by shopping local you get to see the product before you buy it in store or by booking a free home estimate from one of our estimators.

“All our sta have vast experience and knowledge of all our products.

“Sometimes we hear people saying that we “look” too expensive but I would simply say, come in, have a chat and see what we have to o er - for example, a typical bedroom would be from £144 for a twist carpet and that’s supplied and fitted.

“We were also the first local company to o er our Gold Service - for a small surcharge, the team will uplift your old flooring, move furniture, install new floor covering, replace furniture and dispose of your old flooring.

“This service is great for anyone who is either not able or just wants the complete job done for them to allow them to carry on with their day.

“Coming up to Christmas we see a lot of clients wanting new carpets or flooring with stair carpets being the most popular room to do at this time of year.

“So we are extremely busy from September to January but we will work up to Christmas Eve to get jobs completed and make sure our customers are happy.”

We shine a spotlight on a local graphic designer whose influence and work can be spotted on most of the town centre’s streets as his business celebrates 10 years in Paisley.

Paisley Buddie and married father of two Dave Muir loved drawing and painting as a young boy but didn’t see a future career in art and design until well after he’d left school.

“School wasn’t great for me - I did OK, but just OK,” explained Dave of Muirmedia.

“But I did have a brilliant art teacher who let me hang out in the art department when I should have been at English or something equally boring to me!” explained Dave.

“Much later in life, I was diagnosed with ADHD, it just wasn’t a thing back then but I do sometimes wonder if things would have worked out di erently if I had been diagnosed sooner.

“I got a job at 16 and tried various jobs in factories etc. until I decided that it wasn’t the life for me and maybe I should try do what I’m good at…. I went to Reid Kerr College on a Foundation Art course and then took an HND in Graphic Design.

“After leaving Reid Kerr College in 1998 I was lucky enough to get a job in Prontaprint in Greenock as a Junior Graphic Designer, cue the Hovis advert music…

But with a young family it was a daunting thought … like being at the end of a huge diving board, looking over the edge but too afraid to jump. One day I just jumped… head first into the deep end and swam like hell, best thing I’ve ever done!

“These were the days of paste-up tables and the early days of graphic design on computers or ‘desk-top-publishing’ as it was known as then.

“I loved the job and still tell folk that I learned more in two weeks there than I learned in my three years at college!

“Over the next few years I went to work for much larger companies where I was able to work alongside some seriously talented creative folk whose outlook really rubbed o on me.

“Late on in 2014 I was getting frustrated at my full-time job and while already doing some freelance work, I had this urge to go out on my own.

“But with a young family it was a daunting thought … like being at the end of a huge diving board, looking over the edge but too afraid to jump. One day I just jumped… head first into the deep end and swam like hell, best thing I’ve ever done!”

“I started Muirmedia in December 2014 from my kitchen at my house in Paisley, well, at least I didn’t have to walk far for a co ee” laughed Dave.

“A lucky break came when I was introduced to Xtensive web design who liked my work and started passing their clients my way for branding work. Further companies approached me for design services and the biggest client I had was Renfrewshire Leisure, they kept me busy for sure!

“In 2018 I took a big step and moved to the Mile End Mill in Paisley to the smallest o ce they have in Mile End where I still am to this day, it’s at the very top of the building and I like to tell visiting clients ‘welcome to the penthouse suite’.

“Muirmedia had started out as a design company but has evolved into a creative services company which also o ers creative print, photography services, small-scale signage and laser-made items.

Muirmedia gained a reputation for supplying high quality artwork at a fraction of the larger design studio costs.

“This is achieved by streamlining the design process to be as e cient as possible,” explained Dave

“Nope, I won’t be taking you out to a fancy restaurant to win your business or inviting you to our swish city-centre studio complete with beer fridge and ping pong table... I just get the job done and save your business money, this is the approach that my clients prefer.

“Usually the period from June to September is busiest, not Christmas as most people seem to think, but during what I like to call Event Season… this is when I get involved in a lot of large scale events from the East Renfrewshire Chamber Awards to the Paisley 10k and the Summer Trail for Paisley First, I feel like I’m running 100mph during these months!

“I also have another company called Paisley Born and Thread which creates Paisley-based creative prints and clothing items. This is something I love as it’s a real creative outlet for me - no-one is telling me what to do, I have complete creative freedom which is really important for anyone like me who feels the need to create to express themselves.

“I had a rare quiet week and just came up with the slogan ‘Paisley Born and Thread’ on one of the original prints. My artist friend, Moe Rocksmoore, seen it and encouraged me to really go for it so I got stuck in and created loads of designs -

There’s a massive creative movement in Paisley at the moment and hopefully this can help propel the town centre and help the town to prosper again.

I

it really easy as Paisley is an endless treasure-trove of history and amazing people that can inspire in so many ways.

“The Mile End Mill and the other Abbeymill buildings have over 40 of the prints in their hallways and have another 70 just waiting to be put up.

“And the new Hazlitt apartments in Causeyside Street have at least two prints in each of the rooms, they can also be found in the newly opened Paisley Pie Co… they get everywhere - New Zealand, Canada, USA…

“There’s a proud tradition of punching above your weight when you are a Paisley Buddie, we are a resilient lot and we’ve always fought hard to get what we want.

“Natural lift face massage, also known as facial rejuvenation massage, helps relieve deep tension giving the facial muscles a lift – people look visually refreshed and energised with a more stress free look,” added Claire.

“Women's Balance is a new treatment for perimenopause and the menopause using specific essential oils like rose and geranium to ease symptoms, nourish and condition skin as well as harmonise the body and mind.

“Our Seasonal Treatments change every three months so autumn is a Glow Express Facial while Winter is a Hot Stone

“I offer a 10% discount when booking a course of 4 treatments as I feel clients get more benefit from regular treatments and I also offer a Pamper Package where you can choose two 30 minute treatments which is perfect as a gift.

“I use Neals Yard Facial products in treatments as they align with my ethos - being natural, organic and cruelty free, they are effective while being gentle on the skin.

“Each client gets their own bespoke blend of essential oils made

where people come to have an hour to themselves, somewhere to escape, relax, recharge and rebalance.

“More people than ever before are in need of holistic treatments because of the stress of everyday life, we live at such a fast pace and it’s hard to switch off, causing headaches, insomnia, and IBS to name just a few.

“My top tips for good health during the winter and festive period are to look after yourself by getting outside in the fresh air when you can and go for a walk, this helps get the circulation moving and being outside also helps absorb Vitamin D.

“Good nutrition is important, enjoy warm soups and stay hydrated with plenty of water and herbal teas.

“Self-care is so important at this time of year in particular, we are here to help you whether it’s easing pain, managing stress with massage, improving skin conditions with Facials or just being somewhere to come and enjoy some time for yourself.

“My main aim is focusing on stress reduction. When the body is relaxed it can then heal itself from within.”

Celebrating 20 years in Paisley, Orchard Clinic on the town’s Orchard Street is run by dynamic duo Paul and Claire Hart.

The Podiatry service offers advanced treatments including laser therapy, custom made orthotic insoles and Swift verruca treatment while the holistic side of the business has also grown.

“We chose Paisley as it's our home town and also because it's the main town in Renfrewshire with the best transport links to all surrounding areas including Glasgow,” said Claire.

“I love all things natural and my wellness journey began after visiting an Osteopath for neck pain many years ago, it made me realise there is an alternative to medication and painkillers.

“This inspired me to help others, so I initially trained in Aromatherapy massage back in 2003. When we opened Orchard Clinic, I created a relaxing space to do holistic

“We also offer Indian head massage which is a seated massage and great for headaches, neck and shoulder tension as well as for conditioning the hair.

little acorns…Tucked away on Brown’s Lane, a creative revolution continues to take shape and grow, Restoration and Creation’s Caroline Sweeney tells us more.

“We started two years ago with furniture restoration and creative workshops,” explained Caroline.

“The workshops are for anyone interested in the creative process to come and try their hands at making something that they can take away, bring along a bottle and enjoy meeting other like-minded people. We also upcycle furniture and upholster chairs, giving them a fresh lease of life.

“Just a little over year ago, we then opened the space as a Creative Hub, allowing others to join, making and selling their own creative products.

“This has grown to include lots of unique handmade and upcycled products that cannot be found elsewhere with a wide range of home furnishing, furniture, clothing, accessories, jewellery, art, cards and gifts.

“Last year we opened Browns Lane Market, giving other small businesses the opportunity to sell their products on a Saturday.

“The market is held every Saturday from 10am – 4pm –people can find a wide selection of small businesses selling their hand made products that are not available elsewhere.

“They can enjoy a drink in the courtyard and on those rare occasions, they can relax in the sunshine and listen to some live music.

“The aim is for the area to become a creative outlet, giving the people of Paisley and surrounding areas the opportunity to shop for unique products, support small businesses and have a great time in Paisley.”

“We have also recently launched the Paisley GINstitute, where we make and sell our own gin, as well as run workshops,” added Caroline.

This Christmas, PACE Theatre Company is delighted to announce its annual pantomime will be a new version of Aladdin; a re-imagining of the classic tale with a distinctly Scottish flavour.

A seasonal treat for adults and children alike, Aladdin will run from Wednesday 27 November 24 – Sunday 5 January 25 in the newly refurbished Paisley Arts Centre on the town’s New Street.

PACE Theatre Company has produced Paisley's acclaimed pantomime at Paisley Arts Centre since 1988 and are thrilled to be back performing in the venue.

Heading up a stellar ensemble cast are Chris Alexander and Alan Orr. Chris Alexander has been donning high heels as a dame since his first appearance with PACE in 2017, and Alan Orr has turned in comic performances both in Paisley and Dunfermline which have made him a favourite with panto audiences for many years.

Also appearing in this year’s professional cast are Kai Ross in the title role as Aladdin, Yana Harris as Princess Rosie and Lauren Ellis-Stelle as baddie, Wilma the Wonky! The cast will be completed by four teams of

young actors, handpicked from PACE’s core youth theatre groups, enhancing the production with their boundless energy.

Jenni Mason, Artistic Director said, “It’s a pleasure to announce that this year’s panto will be a Scottish version of Aladdin, which will feature PACE’s trademark blend of original music, audience participation, comedy, and traditional family fun.

“Our aim is to offer an entertaining and affordable way for families and friends to celebrate the festivities

For many years, No 9 Gauze Street was the home to an independent shoe shop but recent renovations revealed that long before then, it was once a flower shop. So imagine our delight when the story came full circle, and Wildflower Florist opened at the same location all these years later. Owner Donna McInnes tells us more.

“We opened our doors on 27th April this year, it was important to me to open my florist shop locally in the community where I live.” explained Donna.

I already have my regulars who pop in for a chat or a coffee, there is never a dull moment.

“Paisley has lots to offer with a vibrant creative arts scene as well as fabulous restaurants and independent gift shops, despite the challenges we all face as businesses owners in declining high streets.

“I have always been creative, community and customer facing in my career, service is at the heart of everything I do and now I get to combine my love of flowers and event styling with meeting interesting people from all walks of life.

“I specialise in Wedding & Event styling from small intimate gatherings to large scale events, creating fabulous flower arches, table centrepieces and show stopping displays, whatever the occasion.”

“The advantage of using an independent florist is not only a better quality of flowers but the service - its personal, hand written notes, creating the bouquets and being the person who also delivers them to the recipient,” added Donna.

“My vision is to have a community based shop where I can host creative workshops including flower arranging, seasonal wreath making, botanical and floral clay art and candle making, for both adults and children too.

“Working with flowers and plants has a positive effect on our mental health and wellbeing and it’s great to explore different mediums, it’s fun and interactive.

“It really is lovely knowing you have brightened someone’s day, but we are here for the good and the not so good, flowers are gifted for all occasions or events whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, to cheer someone up but also as a sympathy tribute, or indeed a funeral tribute, flowers really do say it all.

“I have huge plans for the future! However, my main aim for my first year is to embed Wildflower within my local community as the “go to” flower shop for every occasion.

“I would really love to be known as the florist who offers seasonal, unusual flowers not commonly seen elsewhere, to be considered as the florist you need for your Wedding Day Blooms. Basically, when you need any kind of flowers, Wildflower Florists is who you call.

“Without doubt, the people are the best thing about having a business in Paisley - every day is interesting, the people, the conversations, the stories and the laughs.

“I already have my regulars who pop in for a chat or a coffee, there is never a dull moment.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support and custom, as well as other local businesses, the welcome I have experienced from them has been immense.”

DOOLEY’S CYCLES

Established in 1952 by

An

institution in Paisley for more than 70 years, we speak to the third-generation owner of Dooley’s Cycles about the continuing legacy of an independent family business.

Say the word bicycle in Paisley and the name Dooley’s instantly springs to mind, everyone born or brought up in Paisley had at least one bike from Dooley’s during their childhood.

“My grandfather first opened Dooley’s Cycles in Moss Street back in 1952,” explained current owner Ian Dooley.

“Then in 2017, we made the decision to move to new premises at 58 Causeyside Street.

“Cycling has changed a lot since the 50s but Dooley’s is still a name you can trust, offering quality at a competitive price.

“Whether you are after a first bike for children, or something for the cycling enthusiast in your life, we stock everything you need.

“With a range of mountain bikes, racing bikes, hybrid bikes, e-bikes and kids bikes to suit all budgets, you can also buy your cycling accessories, helmets and clothing here too.

“We also offer a full repair service and we’re a Shimano service centre too.”

“Some people think that an online purchase must be cheaper than an instore purchase,” added Ian. “But that’s simply not the case.

“Plus when you come into store to make a purchase, we can make sure you are buying what you really need, and at the right size too.

“All too often people end up spending more because they go online first, only to end up here when that purchase doesn’t work out for them.

“Many of our regular customers are more like friends, supporting independent businesses is also about making social connections.

“When you come to Dooley’s, you can trust in our personal service and be assured that we’ll go the extra mile to make sure you are more than satisfied

We’ve always been here in Paisley, our family is from here, Paisley is embedded in the fabric of the Dooley’s Cycles business.

and we offer an after sales care and service too.”

The team at Dooley’s still offer a Savings Club and a Christmas Club too.

“Our plans for the future are simply to keep doing what we do, what we’re best at,” said Ian.

”We’ve always been here in Paisley, our family is from here, Paisley is embedded in the fabric of the Dooley’s Cycles business.

“We are ambassadors for the company, our name is our word.”

First ten paving stones are unveiled for Paisley’s Buddie Walk of Fame Stars from the world of music, art, TV, film and sport are honoured in their hometown.

As Scotland’s largest town, Paisley has been contributing to the world stage for centuries and now Paisley Buddies from the world of stage, screen, music, art and sport who have made a significant impact on the local community are being honoured in the Buddie Walk of Fame - a stars in the pavement trail, Hollywood Boulevard-style, on the streets of Paisley.

Featuring the town’s sons and daughters as voted for by the people of the Paisley, the first ten ‘stars’ were unveiled in July and include John Byrne outside Paisley Library, High Street; Gerry Ra erty outside The Bungalow music venue on Shuttle Street; Tom Conti outside newly refurbished Paisley Arts Centre, on New Street; and Paolo Nutini outside Castlevecchi, his parent’s chip shop, on New Street.

Phyllis Logan’s stone is on Causeyside Street, outside Phelps Butchers; David Tennant’s stone is on Glasgow Road, close to his former school, Paisley Grammar; while Gerard Butler’s is commemorated outside The Exchange on Old Sneddon Street, soon to be Scotland’s first dedicated youth theatre.

Actor Fulton Mackay’s stone is on Gilmour Street, while local boxing legend, Norrie Sweeney has a stone on Storie Street, close to his old boxing gym. Paisley’s Mill Girls also have a stone situated on Bridge Street, overlooking the old mill with landmarks, Paisley Abbey and Paisley Town Hall in the background.

The project has been driven by Paisley First, the town centre’s Business Improvement District, which is fully

funded by the town centre’s local businesses, along with support from Renfrewshire Council’s Culture, Heritage and Events Fund (CHEF).

Elaine Templeton, Chair, Paisley First, said: “We were inundated with nominations for the Buddie Walk of Fame, but the people of Paisley made it clear that these were the favourites to be celebrated in this first phase.
