Community Service Day a smashing success On sunny early fall Saturday over 250 Pleasant Hill residents gave up their morning to take part in the City’s annual Community Service Day.
Volunteers started off their day at Pleasant Hill Park with a complimentary breakfast provided by the Lions Club, a complimentary shirt provided by the City, and then headed out to one of 15 different locations around the City to take part in projects that ranged from refurbishing used bike to cleaning up trash on Dinosaur Hill to cleaning the banks of Ellinwood Creek.
Community Service Day, in its 19th year, is an event put on by the Civic Action Commission that provides an opportunity for residents to give back and spend their morning with other volunteers helping out. Many local schools use the event to get minor maintenance work and projects done on their campuses and Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District always has plantings or cleanups in area parks. Some of the highlights from this year’s event included: n 800 lbs of food donated in the annual food drive n Refurbished and rehomed 49 bicycles n Clearing of debris and trash from Ellinwood Creek (filling half a 20-yard dumpster n Re-roofing the play barn at The Creative Play Center For those who missed out on this year’s event, you can still help out by participating in the online donation drive benefiting the Food Bank of Contra Costa / Solano Counties. Just scan the QR code to the right to go to the donation site. Check out this month’s Civic Action Commission column on page 5 which talks about volunteerism and other ways you can help out.s
