What to know before removing trees Eachyearmanytreesarecutdown,orexcessively trimmedthroughouttheCityofPleasantHill.Whatmanydo notknowisthatsomeofthesetreesareprotectedbythe City’sTreePreservationOrdinance.Inmanycases,the removalofatreerequiresreviewandapprovalofa City-issuedTreeRemovalPermit.TheCityreviewsapproximately80TreeRemovalPermitapplicationsannually.
Ifyouplantoremove,relocateorexcessivelytrimatree, beawarethatapermitisrequired.EachapplicationisevaluatedbystaffapplyingthestandardswithintheTree PreservationOrdinance(PleasantHillMunicipalCodeSection18.140.110).Theordinanceisintendedtoencouragethe preservationoftreesthroughoutthecommunityand ensurethereplacementoftreeswhenprotectedtreesare removed.TreesareanimportantcomponentofPleasant Hill,theyimprovetheCity’snaturalandscenicbeauty,contributetotheCity’suniquecharacterandidentity,andeven tempertheeffectsofextremetemperatures.
Whenanapplicationisreceived,staffreviewsthematerialstoconfirmifthetreeisprotectedundertheTree Preservationordinance.Aprotectedtreeincludes,butisnot limitedto,thefollowing:

Eagle Scout shows initiative and compassion at PHIG EagleScoutcandidateParkerSmithcontactedthePleasantHill InstructionalGarden(PHIG)toimprovethecompostingsystem educationalareaforupcomingclasses,eventsandworkpartiesand tocreatemoreopportunitiesforvisitorstolearnfromthegarden.
Littledidanyoneknowhisprojectwouldmorphtoincludea rebuildingofthearborandrehangingofthedisplaycasesthatwere dismantledbyvandals.
Afterthecompostingarboranddisplaycasepanelswerediscovereddeliberatelydismantled,aweeklaterthearborwasrestored byParkerSmithenlistingthehelpofhisfamily,swimclub,and friends.HisteamrebuiltitusingGoogleEarthphotos.Smithalso rehungtheeducationalpanelcase,andthenproceededwithhis Eagleproject.
Thecompostingsystemeducationalareaisviewedbyvolunteersandvisitorsatthegardenregularly,andbycommunity members,schoolstaffandstudentsdaily.Visitorsareencouraged totakealookandseehowtopracticemoresustainablegardening andrecyclecarbonintothesoil.
