In2005,agroupofcitizensledby then-CouncilmemberMichaelHarris embarkedonadayofprovidinghelpto PleasantHillresidents.Sincethattime, theeventhasgrownyearafteryear,and evenduringthepandemic,neighborhoodsbandedtogetherforamassive fooddrivetohelpthoseinneed.
TheCivicActionCommissionisinvitingthecommunitytoshareina celebrationofthisgreatannualevent, nowinits20thyear,aswellasturningout foranotheryearoflendingahand.

TheCityofPleasantHillPlanning Divisioniscurrentlyworkingona comprehensiveupdatetotheZoning Ordinancetoimplementthegoals, policiesandprogramsoftherecently adopted2040GeneralPlanand 2023-2031HousingElement,aswell astoupdatecurrentordinance provisionsforclarity,orasrequired byStateLaw.
Themodificationsarebothcontent-relatedandfocusedonproviding increasedclarityandreadabilityofthe ordinance(includinglanguagechoice andstreamliningtextwhereappropriate)andreorganizingsectionsfor improvedusability.

TheCityofPleasantHillwashonored withanAwardofExcellencefromthe CaliforniaAssociationofLocalEconomicDevelopmentfortheCity’s

Local Government Academy Program reboots post-COVID
TheCityofPleasantHillinMayandJuneheldtheirfirstLocalGovernmentAcademy (LGA)post-COVID,allowingresidentstogetanoverviewofCitygovernmentandhowit functions.Eighteenresidentsattendedthefive-weekprogram.
TheLGAwasrevitalizedpost-pandemic,asoneoftheobjectivesto“provideandpromotecommunityevents,”laidoutbytheCityCouncilinitsMarch2024GoalSetting Meeting.

PHPD theft suppression operations help combat retail theft
ThePleasantHillPoliceDepartment’s (PHPD)TheftSuppressionTeam(TST)isacollaborativeeffortofpoliceofficers,detectives, andlosspreventionstafffromlocalretailbusinessestoaddressthechronicissueoftheft. “Weknoweveryoneoutthereisfrustrated thesedayswhenitcomestoretailtheft,”said DetectiveSergeantChrisAnderson.“These theftsuppressionoperationsarejustpartof howwe’retryingtoaddressthatissue.”
TheTSTprogrambenefitstheCityby strengtheningrelationshipsbetweenthepolice andretailestablishmentswhoarestrugglingto keepupwiththeincreaseinshopliftingand othercrimes.InmanycasesduringTSToperations,offenderswhoarearrestedfor theftoffensesarefoundtohaveoutstandingwarrantsand/orarechargedwithadditionalcrimes,suchasfirearmsordrugpossession. PHPDhasheldsixtheftsuppressionoperations throughoutthepastyearandtheagencyiscommittedtodoingsoasoftenastimeandstaffing allow.
ThemostrecentTSTeventattheCrossroads ShoppingCenterinJuly2024netted11arrestsand resultedintherecoveryofapproximately$2,000in stolenmerchandise.SinceAugust2023,theTheft SuppressionTeam’soperationshaveledtoabout 50arrestsandtheretrievalofmorethan$25,000 worthofstolenitems.
K9 Bodie: A Life of Service to Pleasant Hill PD and the City of Pleasant Hill
ThePleasantHillPoliceDepartmentsufferedalossonJuly6,2024,whenlongtime K9Bodiepassedawayfollowingamedicalemergency.
PleasantHillPoliceK9BodiewasbornintheNetherlandsonJanuary30,2017.A DutchShepherdandBelgianMalinoismix,K9Bodiewashand-selectedasapuppy andbroughttotheUnitedStateswherehewastrainedtoworkwithlawenforcementandwaseventuallybroughttothePleasantHillPoliceDepartment.
In2020,K9BodiejoinedthePleasantHillPoliceDepartment,andwaspartnered withthen-OfficerAndrewKuhn,whoservedashishandler.AsanewK9team,K9 BodieandCorporalKuhnwereenrolledinasix-weekpoliceK9academytogether, undergoing240hoursoftraininganddevelopment.“Bodiewastrainedintracking/trailing/wind-scents,buildingsearchesandoutdoorareasearches,”explains CorporalKuhn.“CommonworkforBodiewasclearingtheinsideofabuildingthat hadbeenburglarized,searchingforsuspectswhofledandconductingarticle searches.Bodiewasalsotrainedinapprehension.”
K9BodieservedtheCityofPleasantHillforover fouryears,respondingtocallsforserviceandpatrollingthecommunity.Duringthattime,helivedwith CorporalKuhnandhisfamily,givinghimaloving homelifewhenhewasnotonpatrol.Helivedwith theKuhnsuptohispassing.
ThePleasantHillPoliceDepartmentmournshis passingwithappreciationforhislifeandhisservice, andthanksthecommunityofPleasantHillfortheir supportoftheK9programoverthesemanyyears.

Ourrevisedvisionstatesthatwearecommittedtosupportingschoolsandservingthe PleasantHillcommunitytobuildalastinglegacy ofeducationalinnovationandciviccollaborationthatensureseverystudent’ssuccessfor generationstocome.Wedothatbyservingas ambassadorsbetweentheCityCouncilandthe schoolcommunity.Ourfocusistoengageand connectthecommunityineducation-related activitiesthatvalueequity,inclusion,and safety,andtocelebrategoodthingsthatare happeningintheschoolcommunity.
Recently,we’vecollaboratedwithschools oninclusivityandanti-biascommunityconversations,helpedorganizeandevangelizethe UnityWalk,andhelpedtodistributetheBlack FamiliesCoalitionletter.WehavealsovolunteeredtohelpstaffboothsateventsintheCity, suchastheArt,Wine&Musicfestival,and NationalNightOut.Wecollaboratedwiththe TrafficSafetyCommission,Cityengineers,and communitymembersonthenewcrosswalk intersectionimprovements,andthe2024City BicycleandPedestrianMasterPlan.
Wehelpeddriveschoolsupplydonations throughourwebsiteandconnectedschools withCityvolunteersforCommunityServiceDay. Andmostrecently,wehelpedtheCitydisplayall ofourCollegeParkHighSchoolgraduatenames ontheCityLEDbillboard.
