A medida que octubre nos honra con su presencia, nos encontramos en medio de una temporada de transformación, tanto en la naturaleza como en nuestra comunidad. En este número de la Revista OTWO, nos embarcamos en un viaje de descubrimiento, innovación y renovación, todo ello centrado en el tema de la sostenibilidad.

Nuestro viaje comienza en la página 10, donde somos testigos de la introducción de avances revolucionarios. La inauguración de la Detección Artificial Inteligente y las Líneas de Parada Avanzadas (LPA) en el Intercambiador de Regal House establece un nuevo estándar de seguridad y eficiencia vial. Mientras tanto, el rewilding de Gibraltar se convierte en un faro de esperanza, marcando el regreso de una especie que antaño prosperó en el Peñón. También felicitamos a los vecinos de La Línea de la Concepción por su inquebrantable compromiso en el Día Mundial de la Limpieza. INTRODUCTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENT DETECTION AND ADVANCED STOP LINES (ASL’S) AT REGAL HOUSE INTERCHANGE

The Government of Gibraltar is proud to announce a significant upgrade to the traffic management system at the Regal House Interchange. From midnight on Thursday, August 31st, 2023, the existing traffic lights on Queensway, at its junction with Europort Avenue and Reclamation Road, was replaced with a state-of-the-art intelligent traffic light system.

Over the past few weeks, meticulous efforts have been underway to install cutting-edge infrastructure in phases, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow.

The previous system, though advanced in its time, is being replaced with detectors employing artificial intelligence. These detectors will distinguish between motor vehicles and bicycles/PLET's, dynamically adjusting the traffic flow accordingly.

To enhance safety for cyclists and PLET users, low-level bicycle lights and Advanced Stop Lines will guide them through the junction, granting them a safe head start before vehicles proceed. During non-peak hours, the system will prioritize pedestrians and cyclists. Modern LED lamps and a backup power supply will reduce disruption during power outages. The system also features updated push buttons, catering to the visually impaired.

The then Minister for Transport, the Hon Paul

Balban, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "This new intelligent traffic light system is seen in many modern cities. It allows bicycles and PLET’s to filter past stationary vehicles on traffic lights safely, by way of a segregated lane, whilst giving the pedestrian safe access and priority when the pedestrian light goes green. This system will respond intelligently to vehicles and pedestrians, helping to improve traffic flow." Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution while adjusting to the changes at this junction, which promise safer and more efficient traffic management.

Introducción de detección artificial inteligente y líneas de parada avanzadas (ASL) en el intercambiador de Regal House

El Gobierno de Gibraltar se enorgullece de anunciar una importante mejora del sistema de gestión del tráfico en el Intercambiador de Regal House. A partir de la medianoche del jueves 31 de agosto de 2023, los semáforos existentes en Queensway, en su cruce con Europort Avenue y Reclamation Road, se sustituirán por un sistema de semáforos inteligentes de última generación.

Durante las últimas semanas, se han llevado a cabo meticulosos esfuerzos para instalar la infraestructura de vanguardia por fases, garantizando una interrupción mínima del flujo de tráfico. El sistema anterior, aunque avanzado en su época, está siendo sustituido por detectores que emplean inteligencia artificial. Estos detectores distinguirán entre vehículos de motor y bicicletas/PLET, ajustando dinámicamente el flujo de tráfico en consecuencia.

Para aumentar la seguridad de los ciclistas y los usuarios de PLET, las luces de bajo nivel para bicicletas y las Líneas de Alto Avanzadas les guiarán a través del cruce, dándoles una ventaja segura antes de que avancen los vehículos. En horas no punta, el sistema dará prioridad a peatones y ciclistas. Las modernas lámparas LED y una fuente de alimentación de reserva reducirán las interrupciones durante los cortes de electricidad. El sistema también cuenta con pulsadores actualizados, adaptados a los discapacitados visuales.

El entonces Ministro de Transportes, el Honorable Paul Balban, expresó su entusiasmo: «Este nuevo

sistema inteligente de semáforos se ve en muchas ciudades modernas. Permite a las bicicletas y a los PLET pasar por delante de los vehículos parados en los semáforos de forma segura, mediante un carril segregado, al tiempo que da al peatón acceso seguro y prioridad cuando el semáforo peatonal se pone en verde. Este sistema responderá de forma inteligente a vehículos y peatones, ayudando a mejorar la fluidez del tráfico».

Se insta a automovilistas y peatones a que actúen con precaución mientras se adaptan a los cambios en este cruce, que prometen una gestión del tráfico más segura y eficaz.

REWILDING GIBRALTAR: LANDMARK EVENT SIGNIFIES THE RE-INTRODUCTION OF A SPECIES THAT ONCE THRIVED ON THE ROCK

In a monumental step towards ecological restoration, Gibraltar proudly welcomes back a long-lost inhabitant to its shores. Six adult Hermann's tortoises, three males and three females, were released into Parson's Lodge, a part of the Gibraltar National Park, on Monday, September 18th, 2023.

The Hermann's tortoise, native to the Mediterranean, was once a natural species on the Rock, as evidenced by archaeological finds in Gorham's and Vanguard Caves, along with the recently named Neanderthals' Grotto. Unfortunately, the species became extinct in Gibraltar due to habitat loss.

This rewilding project marks a significant step towards restoring the species to its native habitat in Gibraltar. The release of these tortoises, along with wild rabbits and Iberian water frogs, is a pivotal moment in the history of wildlife conservation on the Rock.

Caretaker Minister for Heritage, Prof John Cortes, expressed his excitement, stating, "This is a really exciting occasion and part of the journey towards restoring as much of Gibraltar’s original wildlife as is possible. It’s a great initiative and so fitting in Parson’s Lodge, soon to be opened as a Museum of Natural History."

Hermann's tortoise, currently listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN Red List, now has a chance to thrive once again in its native Gibraltar habitat, thanks to this ambitious rewilding effort.

Recuperado Gibraltar: Un acontecimiento histórico supone la reintroducción de una especie que antaño prosperó en el Peñón

En un paso monumental hacia la restauración ecológica, Gibraltar acoge con orgullo el regreso a sus costas de un habitante perdido hace mucho tiempo. Seis tortugas de Hermann adultas, tres machos y tres hembras, fueron liberadas en Parson's Lodge, parte del Parque Nacional de Gibraltar, el lunes 18 de septiembre de 2023.

La tortuga de Hermann, originaria del Mediterráneo, fue en su día una especie natural del Peñón, como demuestran los hallazgos arqueológicos en las cuevas de Gorham y Vanguard, junto con la recientemente bautizada como Gruta de los Neandertales. Por desgracia, la especie se extinguió en Gibraltar debido a la pérdida de hábitat.

Este proyecto de recuperación de la naturaleza supone un paso importante hacia la restauración de la especie en su hábitat nativo de Gibraltar. La liberación de estas tortugas, junto con la de conejos salvajes y ranas de agua ibéricas, es un momento crucial en la historia de la conservación de la fauna salvaje en el Peñón.

El Ministro de Patrimonio, el profesor John Cortés, expresó su entusiasmo: "Es una ocasión realmente emocionante y forma parte del camino hacia la restauración de la mayor parte posible de la fauna original de Gibraltar. Es una gran iniciativa y tan apro-

piada en Parson's Lodge, que pronto se inaugurará como Museo de Historia Natural".

La tortuga de Hermann, actualmente catalogada como "Casi Amenazada" por la Lista Roja de la UICN, tiene ahora la oportunidad de prosperar de nuevo en su hábitat nativo de Gibraltar, gracias a este ambicioso esfuerzo de rewilding.

WORLD CLEAN UP DAY IN LA LÍNEA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN

Our collaborator Alfredo Valencia informs us about the cleaning day at the Poniente Beach in La Línea de la Concepción on the occasion of the World Clean Up Day and organized by the Gran Sur Shopping Center.

Once again, this year, this shopping center of Linense is in solidarity with its environment and chose September 12, 2023 for this activity. A day in which volunteers from more than 190 countries around the world join forces to clean the planet. The initiative was carried out with the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Campo de Gibraltar, ADEM; KCG Paddle Surf Campo de Gibraltar; KCG Kite Campo de Gibraltar, who will also carry out a parallel activity in different beaches of Algeciras. The cleaning day promoted by Gran Sur also has the collaboration of the insurance agency Pietro y Uceda SL, the Association Mi Barrio Bonito de La Línea, the Association "La Ruta de los Búnkeres", the Association Pro-Personas con Necesidades Socio-Educativas Especiales de Cádiz (Pro-People with Special Socio-Educational Needs of Cádiz) “Asansull” and the Delegation of Operational Services and Maintenance of the City of La Línea de la Concepción.

More than 700 kilos of garbage, mainly plastic and aluminum, and some 6,000 cigarette butts were collected by the more than 100 volunteers who participated in the activity.

World Clean Up Day en La Línea de la Concepción

Nuestro proteico colaborador Alfredo Valencia nos informa sobre la jornada de limpieza en la Playa de Poniente de La Línea de la Concepción con motivo del World Clean Up Day y organizada por el Centro Comercial Gran Sur.

un años más este centro comercial linense se solidariza con su entorno y eligió el 12 de septiembre de 2023 para dicha actividad. Una jornada en la que voluntarios y voluntarias de más de 190 países de todo el mundo aúnan fuerzas para limpiar el planeta. La iniciativa se llevó a cabo con la Asociación de Esclerosis Múltiple del Campo de Gibraltar, ADEM; KCG Paddle Surf Campo de Gibraltar; KCG Kite Campo de Gibraltar, quienes realizarán también una actividad paralela en distintas playas de Algeciras. La jornada de limpieza promovida por Gran Sur cuenta también con la colaboración de la agencia de seguros Pietro y Uceda SL; la Asociación Mi Barrio Bonito de La Línea; la Asociación «La Ruta de los Búnkeres»; la Asociación Pro-Personas con Necesidades Socio-Educativas Especiales de Cádiz (Asansull) y la Delegación de Servicios Operativos y Mantenimiento del Ayuntamiento de La Línea de la Concepción. Más de 700 kilos de basura, principalmente plástico y aluminio, y unas 6.000 colillas consiguieron recoger los más de cien voluntarios que participaron en la actividad.

THE NIGHT OF THE BATS IN CASARES

On Friday 22nd and 29th, several activities were carried out on the occasion of Euro Bats, 2023, celebrating the Night of the Bats; in the town of Casares. Organized by the Department of Environment of the City Council of Casares with the collaboration of the Caxara Speleological Research Society, the Biological Station of Doñana and the Spanish Society for the Conservation and Study of Bats (SECEMU), various activities were staged, the first took place in El Secadero (Casares) and the next in Casares village.

The activities consisted of informative, didactic talks, in which the importance of bats in ecosystems, the different species existing in Spain (and especially in Casares), some curiosities and as a complement, the exhibition "Vecinos Nocturnos" (Night Neighbors) was explained; then in the late afternoon a pleasant walk was made, in the outskirts of the localities, with the participants (mainly children with their parents) to carry out a practical workshop with ultrasound detectors. The children were able to enjoy the devices and hear for the first time sounds that usually go unnoticed.

The activities began at 7.30 p.m. on the 22nd at the Plaza de Andalucía in El Secadero and on the 29th at the Plaza de España in Casares.

La Noche de los Murciélagos en Casares

El viernes día 22 y el día 29 se llevaron a cabo diversas actividades con motivo del Euro Bats, 2023, celebrando La Noche de los Murciélagos; en la localidad de Casares. Organizadas por la Concejalía de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de Casares con la colaboración de la Sociedad de Investigaciones Espeleológicas Caxara, la Estación Biológica de Doñana y la Sociedad Española para la Conservación y Estudio de los Murciélagos (SECEMU), diversas actividades se pusieron en escena, la primera tuvo lugar en El Secadero (Casares) y la siguiente en Casares pueblo.

Las actividades se componen de charlas informativas, didácticas, en las que se transmitió la importancia de los murciélagos en los ecosistemas, las distintas especies existentes en España (y especialmente en Casares) algunas curiosidades y como complemento se explicó la exposición «Vecinos Nocturnos»; luego a la caída de la tarde se realizó un agradable paseo, en las afueras de las localidades, con los participantes (principalmente niños junto a sus padres) para realizar un taller práctico con detectores de ultrasonidos. Los pequeños pudieron disfrutar de los aparatos y oír por primera vez sonidos que habitualmente pasan muy desapercibidos.

Las actividades comenzaron a las 19,30 horas el día 22 en la Plaza de Andalucía de El Secadero y el día 29 en la Plaza de España en Casares.

CARLOS SERRATO PRESENTS "TOWARDS A POP THEORY"

The wealth of ideas contained in the book, the brilliance with which they are presented, the heterodox accent that runs through the framework of the essay and the boldness that electrifies the analyses formulated throughout the book have two antagonistic effects on the reader. On the one hand, it is not easy to escape from the fascination aroused by some of those approaches that drag you to modify convictions you thought were immutable; on the other hand, it is difficult to admit all the proposals without disagreeing profoundly about some of them. And it is precisely in this perceptive duality where one of the book's greatest qualities lies, because in this way one notices that its critical apparatus is not limited to pontificating about pop, but provokes discrepancies that generate healthy debates. Every reader has access to the opportunity to discuss

with himself or to transfer the intellectual struggle to a wider forum. And he takes advantage of it. "Towards a Theory of Pop" is a protean, germinal, inciting book, and as decisive in its will to agitate as Hendrix's fiery guitar or the caustic dissidence of punk aesthetics. We talked about it as a result of the recent presentation of this essay in La Línea by Carlos Fernández Serrato, under the auspices of the Ateneo de la Bahía and shrewdly introduced by Juan José Trujillo. The sensitivity towards the most nonconformist paths of cultural action points once again to the regenerating spirit that beats in the Ateneo's genome, as attentive to the ranks of excellence as to the transforming manifestations capable of alleviating two current evils in the cultural field: the adulteration of the scales of values in favor of mediocrity and the almost pathological inclination towards the most hackneyed formulas. The public's support endorses the renovating course proposed by the Ateneo.

La riqueza de ideas contenida en el libro, la brillantez con que éstas son expuestas, el acento heterodoxo que recorre el armazón del ensayo y el atrevimiento que electriza los análisis formulados a lo largo del mismo provocan en el lector dos efectos antagónicos. Por una parte, no es fácil escapar de la fascinación que despiertan algunos planteamientos de esos que te arrastran a modificar convicciones que creías inmutables; por otra, cuesta admitir todas las propuestas sin discrepar profundamente acerca de algunas de ellas. Y es precisamente en esta dualidad perceptiva donde reside una de las máximas cualidades del libro, porque así uno advierte que su aparataje crítico no se limita a pontificar acerca del pop sino que provoca discrepancias generadoras de saludables debates. Todo lector accede a la oportunidad de discutir consigo mismo o trasladar

la pugna intelectiva a un foro más amplio. Y eso aprovecha. «Hacia una teoría del pop» es un libro proteico, germinal, incitante y tan decisivo en su voluntad de agitación como la guitarra ardiente de Hendrix o la cáustica disidencia de la estética punk. Hablamos de ello a raíz de la reciente presentación de este ensayo en La Línea por Carlos Fernández Serrato, bajo los auspicios del Ateneo de la Bahía y sagazmente introducido por Juan José Trujillo. La sensibilidad hacia los derroteros más inconformistas de la acción cultural señala una vez más el ánimo regenerador que late en el genoma del Ateneo, tan atento a los rangos de excelencia como a las manifestaciones transformadoras capaces de paliar dos males actuales en el ámbito cultural: la adulteración de las escalas de valores en favor de la mediocridad y la inclinación casi patológica hacia las fórmulas más trilladas. El apoyo del público avala el rumbo renovador propuesto por el Ateneo.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT ACTION GROUP (STAG) ADVOCATES FOR CYCLING CHARTER

A new group known as the Sustainable Transport Action Group (STAG) has been formed, comprising professional cyclists and environmentalists. STAG's primary objective is to introduce a cycling charter to all political parties in Gibraltar, mirroring similar initiatives in various European cities. The charter underscores the benefits of further developing cycling infrastructure in Gibraltar for the community's greater good.

The Gibraltar Cycling Association, along with its four affiliated clubs totaling 215 members, supports the charter. Notably, this represents only a fraction of non-club cyclists in Gibraltar. The Environmental Safety Group also endorses this initiative. The charter serves as a reminder to political parties of the importance of wholehearted support for sustainable transport development.

Since June 3, 2023, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of the newly established cycling lanes, particularly by younger individuals. STAG aims to depoliticize this crucial matter and encourages collective action for sustainable transportation in Gibraltar.

La carta subraya las ventajas de seguir desarrollando la infraestructura ciclista en Gibraltar por el bien de la comunidad. La Asociación Ciclista de Gibraltar, junto con sus cuatro clubes afiliados, que suman 215 miembros, apoya la carta. Since 2015 we are very proud to say that Metalrok Ltd has been providing Gibraltar with a Recycling Service at the premises delivered by the government of Gibraltar Ecopark which is a joint public and private partnership located at 8 Flint Road. There has been an increase in Recycling but even so our daily waste stream contains goods which are perfectly suited to be reused not been recycled ending up in the landfill polluting the environment.

Together we can turn this around by reusing, preventing pollution, reducing usage of raw materials, sustaining the environment for future generations thus preventing them from ending in landfill and sea.

There is a need for these items in places like Senegal in West Africa were there are areas of extreme Poverty. with your cooperation we would like to meet their necessities by helping to provide them with donated unwanted items. At present we are only accepting donations for clothing and bedlinen.

We are collecting items that are still good for purpose and in usable condition in a bid to give them a new lease of life. Kindly take note that we will not make ourselves responsible for the collection of broken down items. The circumstances these people unfortunately live in deserve a sense of dignity and pride. It is widely accepted that the Construction Industry is in the top three of polluters in the world. In Gibraltar this figure is likely to be greater given our success in attracting investment. Whether Gibraltar or Spain however, the biggest challenge is the control of Energy waste within existing building portfolios which is by far the biggest consumer of energy.

To say that building and engineering practices have been lack in the past in the control of demand and use of energy is an understatement. The biggest challenge in this industry sector is therefore harnessing and controlling inefficiency within existing buildings.

In the excellent previous article, our colleagues at Coamba rightly put emphasis on the Universities in the area and highlight the need for transparent and ethical practices in this obviously important and influential sector.

As night began to fall, she stood erect at the entrance to the cave and felt the coolness of the stone on the soles of her feet. Soft gusts of fresh air entering through the main mouth of the cave, and exiting through the large opening at the other end of the coat, caressed her bare back. She trembled, for a moment she felt an irrepressible desire to run away from there, but she looked at the women around her and knew that nothing bad could happen, they loved her.

The road to the Mother's Shelter, where she was now, had passed in silence, only interrupted from time to time by the whispering of the prayers intoned by the old women of the group harmonizing their slow pace. As if it were a mantra, this litany submerged her in a kind of meditative absorption that made her lose track of time. Images of her leading the column of children on the various forays they made, full of laughter and games, came and went in her head like waves in the sea, but they had little or nothing to do with this new experience.

Despojada de toda vestimenta y de los ornamentos que solía portar en sus cabellos, ya que estos serían cortados, permanecía inmóvil y aun bajo los efectos letárgicos del camino. Sentía en su piel como algunas mujeres deslizando el borde de pequeños cuencos, recogían la sangre que descendía por el interior de sus muslos.

Ajena, por momentos, a lo que las mujeres realizaban, su mirada recorría minuciosamente las paredes de la cueva apenas iluminada por antorchas, buscaba con curiosidad infantil aquellas figuras pintadas de las cuales había oído hablar a sus abuelas. Como surgiendo de la piedra iban apareciendo una a una, el triángulo creador de vida y que le aportaría protección en los futuros partos, junto a este la cierva pintada donante de la leche con la que mezclarían su sangre como forma de garantizar el alimento y una larga vida para ella y para los recién nacidos. A su derecha, en la parte inferior de la pared de la cueva, dos soles pintados, casi idénticos, le recordaban la dualidad de todas las cosas existentes en el mundo, el sol nacía, pero también moría todos los días. With the Moon Goddess as a witness, she would emerge from the waters, transformed into a woman. From that moment on, a new life as an adult would begin. Gone were the games with her friends, the baths in the river, climbing trees, wanting to be the first to see Vega emerge at dusk in the dark sky. Now there would be new obligations, new duties... but she already had her own plans.

Between 2015 and 2018, on the occasion of the completion of my doctoral thesis, we visited on several occasions the shelters called Cueva del Obispo I and II. The reason was to carry out a series of studies, including astronomical observations during the solstices and equinoxes, since among its paintings there are solar figures, the main reason for my research.

The site is located in the Sequilla mountain range in the municipality of Los Barrios. These two shelters were first published by Abbé H. Breuil and M. C. Burkitt in 1929.

Both cavities, separated by a large crevice that leads to an idyllic natural spring of water, have two mouths, each one open to the N and S respectively.

Regarding its dimensions, we can say that the monumentality of the rock and the shelters that were formed in it stand out. It is impressive to see this great stone mass that reminds us of a gigantic Paleolithic skull. If today we, humans of the 21st century, are dumbfounded by this formation, for them it would be inevitable not to interpret it as a sign from the spirits that governed their cosmovision, that this place should be sacralized. Possibly, this was one of the reasons or characteristics why some shelters were chosen to be painted and others were not.

Obispo I has four clearly defined paintings, two suns, a triangle and an almost imperceptible doe, the rest are just remains of what were once figures. On the sloping floor of the cave are found, engraved by man, a series of channels and bowls that probably fulfilled their function in rituals performed with

Mientras el líquido descendía por las ranuras, las mujeres alzaban cada vez más sus voces, recitando al unísono oraciones, implorando a la Diosa Madre protección para esta niña, pronto adulta.

Cuando por fin hasta la última gota del líquido sacralizado fue absorbida por la tierra, alimento de nuevas semillas, las mujeres la acompañaron hasta la fuente de agua para que se sumergiese en ella. Con la Diosa Luna como testigo, surgiría de entre las aguas, convertida en mujer. Comenzaba a partir de ese momento una nueva vida como adulta, atrás quedaban los juegos con sus amigos, los baños en el río, trepar a los árboles, querer ser la primera en ver a Vega surgir al atardecer en el oscuro cielo. Ahora habría nuevas obligaciones, nuevos deberes… pero ella ya tenía sus propios planes.

Entre los años 2015 y 2018, con motivo de la realización de mi tesis doctoral, visitamos en varias ocasiones los abrigos denominados Cueva del Obispo I y II. La razón era realizarle una serie de estudios, entre ellos observaciones astronómicas durante los solsticios y equinoccios, ya que entre sus pinturas se encuentran figuras solares, motivo principal de mi investigación.

El yacimiento se encuentra en la sierra Sequilla en el término municipal de Los Barrios. Estos dos abrigos fueron publicados por primera vez por el abate H. Breuil y M. C. Burkitt, en 1929.

Ambas cavidades, separadas por una gran grieta que conduce hasta una idílica surgencia natural de agua, cuentan con dos bocas, cada una abierta hacia el N y S respectivamente.

En lo referente a sus dimensiones podemos decir que destaca la monumentalidad del peñón y los abrigos que en él se formaron. Impresiona ver esa gran masa pétrea que nos recuerda una gigantesca calavera paleolítica. Si hoy en día a nosotros, humanos del siglo XXI, nos deja boquiabiertos esa formación, para ellos sería inevitable no interpretar como una señal de los espíritus que regían su cosmovisión, que ese lugar debía ser sacralizado. Posiblemente,

liquids. Both the triangle and the doe lead us to think of the feminine, of fertility. At the end of the crevice that separates the two shelters is the aforementioned natural water source. Understood as the ancestral origin of life, water was used in various cultures in initiation rituals, as a guarantee of rebirth through ceremonial baths, as a purifying liquid and as the separating element between the world of the living and the dead.

It is possible that this place was a sanctuary where rites of passage to adulthood were performed. Ethnoarchaeological studies tell us about complex rituals where water, blood, animal sacrifices or hair cutting would be part of them.

It is possible that the menstrual taboos that existed in the West until a few decades ago, which considered menstrual fluid as "polluting and dangerous", conditioned anthropologists when interpreting the social practices of the cultures observed and, as proposed by Alma Gottlieb and Thomas Buckley in their book Blood Magic: The Anthropology of Menstruation, menstruation huts were actually sites of female sorority, where menstrual fluid had magical significance for them, and bonds were strengthened between the women who participated in these ceremonies.

During the Winter Solstice of 2015 we conducted astronomical observation, because of the position of the sun and the orientation of the cave mouth we knew that it was unlikely that any noteworthy phenomenon would occur. At 8 h and 28 min a ray of sunlight, when it seemed impossible, penetrated the shelter projecting on the left wall a triangular figure (from the appearance of the reflection until its total disappearance only 13 minutes would pass). The triangle reflected by the sun on the left wall had the same measurements and characteristics as the triangle painted on the right wall of the shelter. We found an authentic scenography created for the realization of some kind of ritual. The triangles, one painted and the other formed by the ephemeral sunlight, mediated by the engravings on the floor, are traces of some ceremonial where acts of libation were performed as a form of offering to Mother Earth.

What would be marking that moment of the year in this shelter plagued by the remains of a sacred world, it is difficult to know. But we are reluctant to think that all this is just a mere coincidence.

Obispo I tiene cuatro pinturas claramente definidas, dos soles, un triángulo y una cierva ya casi imperceptible, lo demás son tan solo restos de lo que una vez fueron figuras. En el suelo inclinado de la cueva se encuentran, grabados por el hombre, una serie de canalillos y cazoletas que probablemente cumpliesen su función en rituales realizados con líquidos. Tanto el triángulo como la cierva nos llevan a pensar en lo femenino, en la fertilidad. Al final de la grieta que separa ambos abrigos se encuentra la fuente de agua natural anteriormente mencionada. Entendida como origen ancestral de la vida, el agua fue utilizada en diversas culturas en rituales de iniciación, como garantía de renacimiento a través de los baños ceremoniales, como líquido purificador y como el elemento separador del mundo de los vivos y el de los muertos.

Es posible que este lugar fuese un santuario donde se realizasen ritos de tránsito a la edad adulta. Los estudios de Etnoarqueología nos hablan de rituales complejos donde tanto el agua, la sangre, los sacrificios de animales o el corte de los cabellos formarían parte de ellos.

Es posible que los tabúes menstruales que hasta hace pocas décadas existían en occidente, los cuales consideraban al fluido menstrual como «contaminante y peligroso», condicionaran a los antropólogos a la hora de interpretar las prácticas sociales de las culturas observadas y, como proponen Alma Gottlieb y Thomas Buckley en su libro Blood Magic: The Anthropology of Menstruation, las cabañas de menstruación en realidad eran sitios de sororidad femenina, donde el fluido menstrual tenía para ellos/ ellas un significado mágico, y se reforzaban los vínculos entre las mujeres que participaban en estas ceremonias.

Durante el Solsticio de invierno del año 2015 realizamos la observación astronómica, por la posición del sol y la orientación de la boca de la cueva sabíamos que era improbable que sucediese algún fenómeno digno de mención. A las 8 h y 28 min un rayo de sol, cuando ya parecía imposible, penetró en el abrigo proyectando en la pared izquierda una figura triangular (desde la aparición del reflejo hasta

su desaparición total solo pasarían 13 minutos). El triángulo reflejado por el sol en la pared izquierda, tenía las mismas medidas y características que el triángulo pintado en la pared derecha del abrigo. Nos encontramos con una auténtica escenografía creada para la realización de algún tipo de ritual. Los triángulos, uno pintado y otro formado por la luz solar, efímera, mediados por los grabados en el suelo, son huellas de algún ceremonial en donde se realizarían actos de libación como forma de ofrenda a la Madre Tierra.

Qué es lo que estaría marcando ese momento del año en este abrigo plagado de restos de un mundo sagrado, es difícil saberlo. Pero nos resistimos a pensar que todo esto se trate tan solo de una mera casualidad.

The next leg of our road trip through Italy would take us to the historic port city of Genoa. The idea was to make Genoa, the capital of Liguria our base and from there visit Sestri Ponente. An industrial suburb of Genoa, Sestri Ponente which lies at a mere twelve kilometres from Genoa city centre is the home of my paternal Italian ancestors.

From Sestri Levante our previous destination, the distance to Genoa is approximately fifty kilometres. The coastal road traverses Lavagna, Soagli, and Rapallo. We made a brief stopover at Rapallo simply because the town’s name has a connection to Gibraltar in the person of the late Edward Rapallo the third Gibraltarian Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar. It was a beautiful morning, and Rapallo was full of people. We parked the car and made our way to the waterfront area, known as the Lungomare Vittorio Veneto All the café terraces, bars, and restaurants on the promenade were brimming with enthusiastic patrons enjoying the glorious scenery and weather. After walking for about half an hour, we finally found an empty table in a little corner café and sat down to have a relaxing coffee, after which we resumed our journey to Genoa.

La siguiente etapa de nuestro viaje por carretera a través de Italia nos llevaría a la histórica ciudad portuaria de Génova. La idea era hacer de Génova, la capital de Liguria, nuestra base y desde allí visitar Sestri Ponente. Sestri Ponente, un suburbio industrial de Génova situado a sólo doce kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, es el hogar de mis antepasados paternos italianos.

Desde Sestri Levante, nuestro destino anterior, la distancia a Génova es de unos cincuenta kilómetros. La carretera costera atraviesa Lavagna, Soagli y Rapallo. Hicimos una breve parada en Rapallo simplemente porque el nombre de la ciudad tiene una conexión con Gibraltar en la persona del difunto Edward Rapallo, tercer obispo católico romano gibraltareño de Gibraltar.

Hacía una mañana preciosa y Rapallo estaba lleno de gente. Aparcamos el coche y nos dirigimos a la zona del paseo marítimo, conocida como Lungomare Vittorio Veneto. With plenty of time on our hands we left Rapallo through the centre of town and from there hooked directly onto the picturesque SS1 Aurelia Road. The original Aurelia Road, a scenic coastal route, was built by the Romans in the third century BCE and named after the consul Aurelius Cotta, who was responsible for its construction. Running roughly along the same path as the old Roman road, the SS1 offers breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea and the rugged coastline. This stretch of road winds through small coastal villages, olive groves, and vineyards, providing a delightful experience for drivers and passengers alike.

We arrived at Hotel Bristol Palace, our base in Genoa just before midday. An Art Nouveau building, centrally located in the heart of the city, Hotel Bristol Palace is one of Genoa’s most popular accommodation facilities. Restored in 2014 to its former Belle Epoque glory, the hotel includes a number of interesting features, including the outstanding Liberty spiral staircase which is said to have inspired Alfred Hitchcock —English film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor— to shoot scenes for his famous film Vertigo, released in 1958.

There are a number of interesting theories regarding the origin of the city’s name. Some say that it was coined from the Latin word Genu, meaning knee. Another popular theory states that the city was named after Janus, the ancient Roman god of beginnings, transitions, doorways, and gates. Just like Genoa’s two faces, one that looks at the sea and another turned to the mountains, Janus is often represented as having two faces, one looking forward and the other backward. In his Naturalis Historia (Natural History) published around 77CE, Pliny the Elder, Roman author, naturalist, natural philosopher, and naval commander of the early Roman Empire, states that the name derives from the Latin name, Oppidum Genua (town of Genoa). Others propose that the name comes from the Etruscan word Kainua which means New City. Opinions differ as to the origins of the city’s name, however to this day no one has been able to provide definitive proof regarding the city’s designation.

The sixth-largest city in Italy, Genoa is famous for its historic port, today one of the most important on the Mediterranean and busiest in Italy. Originally a small fishing village, during the Roman era the area

grew as an established port around the first century BCE. Sometime later the first lighthouse tower was erected. The Romans called the lighthouse Lanterna di Genova. It was identified as a basic structure, rising to an elevation of about seventy-six meters above sea level. Over the centuries the tower has seen extensive renovations and expansions. The existing tower, maintaining the height of the original Roman lighthouse, originates from the 16th century. Considered one of the oldest in the world, the Lanterna di Genova has today become a classic symbol of the city.

Strategically located in the Mediterranean Sea, Genoa’s modern seaport is a vital hub for both commercial and passenger traffic. It covers an area of three thousand acres and employs over four thousand people. Nowadays the port is considered a gateway to Central and Southern Europe, providing access to major trade routes connecting Europe, Africa, and Asia.

It was approaching lunchtime, so we decided to make our way on foot to the port area for lunch. The friendly hotel staff warned us to avoid certain areas of the port at night as they considered the place dangerous for tourists. Walking around looking for a place to eat we were beckoned by a waiter—waving a menu— offering quality food at a decent price. Without thinking too much about it we accepted. To our surprise the menu was limited and rather dull, uncharacteristic of what we had previously experienced during our road trip. With little choice we ordered grilled prawns, fried fish, chips, and salad. After waiting for about fifteen minutes our meal finally arrived. Unfortunately, the quality food we were promised did not materialise, nothing was fresh, it was all frozen food. Without doubt this ended up being the least appetizing meal we had on this entire road trip. To add insult to injury the final bill was expensive, and we left the restaurant feeling disappointed. The only thing I enjoyed was the bottled Moretti beer which was served cold and was very refreshing.

Genoa is unique amongst Italian cities offering a combination of interesting sites. After lunch we visited the Christopher Columbus House, birthplace of the famous Italian explorer who is credited with discovering America in 1492. Located at Piazza Dante, the original house was built in the 14th century, and destroyed by fire in 1684. Today the property is

Hoy en día, el puerto se considera una puerta de entrada a Europa central y meridional, y da acceso a las principales rutas comerciales que conectan Europa, África y Asia.

Se acercaba la hora de comer, así que decidimos dirigirnos a pie a la zona portuaria para almorzar. El amable personal del hotel nos advirtió que evitáramos ciertas zonas del puerto por la noche, ya que consideraban el lugar peligroso para los turistas. Caminando en busca de un sitio para comer, un camarero nos hizo señas -agitando un menú- ofreciéndonos comida de calidad a un precio decente. Sin pensarlo demasiado aceptamos. Para nuestra sorpresa, el menú era limitado y bastante aburrido, poco característico de lo que habíamos probado durante nuestro viaje por carretera. Sin muchas opciones, pedimos gambas a la plancha, pescado frito, patatas fritas y ensalada. Después de esperar unos quince minutos, por fin llegó nuestra comida. Por desgracia, la comida de calidad que nos habían prometido no se materializó, nada era fresco, todo era comida congelada. Sin duda, fue la comida menos apetitosa de todo el viaje. Para colmo de males la cuenta final era cara, y salimos del restaurante sin-

an 18th century reconstruction of the house in which Columbus is believed to have lived. Converted into a museum in 1936, the building has seen extensive renovation since the 20th century, today attracting around 100,000 people each year. Dedicated to the life and exploration of Christopher Columbus, the museum highlights a variety of exhibits and artifacts that refer to the life and voyages of one of the most famous and intrepid navigators and explorers in maritime history. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and recommend it to all those with an interest in maritime and seafaring history.

The next site on our itinerary was the Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno (Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno) located within Piazzale Giovanni Battista Resasco outside the city centre, to the northeast. Considered one of the most beautiful and fascinating in Europe, Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno is a true open-air museum. The most important feature of the cemetery is the Cappella del Suffragi or Pantheon, which preserves the memory of the great Genoese. The idea of visiting the cemetery was two-fold. In the first place to admire its majestic collection of sculptural monuments, and secondly to try and locate tombs inscribed with my surname. Unfortunately, we were not successful in our quest to locate any of my Italian ancestors resting places, albeit our search was short because of the cemetery’s early closing.

The notion of adding Genoa to our Italian road trip was not solely based on tourism; there was also a personal genealogical angle because many Gibraltarians, myself included can trace our ancestors back to the city of Genoa and its surrounding towns and villages. Leopold, my paternal grandfather had conducted extensive research into our family history and had established that Franco Antonio Pittaluga born in Sestri Ponente in 1801, had travelled to Gibraltar aged thirteen in 1814. Most probably accompanied by family and friends, Franco Antonio came to Gibraltar looking for work. For reasons I ignore he did not return to Sestri Ponente where his parents and family lived. Seven years later in 1821, he married Juana, a local girl and thereby established my paternal family line in Gibraltar.

My intention was to visit Sestri Ponente in order to try and add to my grandfather’s family research. The main objectives with respect to this investigation

En la actualidad, la propiedad es una reconstrucción del siglo XVIII de la casa en la que se cree que vivió Colón. Convertido en museo en 1936, el edificio ha sido objeto de importantes reformas desde el siglo XX, y en la actualidad atrae a unas 100.000 personas cada año. Dedicado a la vida y la exploración de Cristóbal Colón, el museo destaca una variedad de exposiciones y artefactos que hacen referencia a la vida y los viajes de uno de los navegantes y exploradores más famosos e intrépidos de la historia marítima. Disfruté mucho de la visita y la recomiendo a todos los interesados en la historia marítima.

El siguiente lugar de nuestro itinerario fue el Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno (Cementerio monumental de Staglieno), situado en la Piazzale Giovanni Battista Resasco, fuera del centro de la ciudad, al noreste. Considerado uno de los más bellos y fascinantes de Europa, el Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno es un verdadero museo al aire libre. El elemento más importante del cementerio es la Cappella del Suffragi o Panteón, que conserva la memoria de los grandes genoveses. La idea de visitar el cementerio era doble. En primer lugar, admirar su majestuosa colección de monumentos escultóricos y, en segundo lugar, intentar localizar tumbas inscritas con mi apellido. Desgraciadamente, no tuvimos éxito en nuestra búsqueda de ninguno de los lugares de descanso de mis antepasados italianos, aunque nuestra búsqueda fue corta debido al cierre anticipado del cementerio.

La idea de añadir Génova a nuestro viaje por Italia no era sólo turística, sino también genealógica, ya que muchos gibraltareños, entre los que me incluyo, tenemos antepasados en la ciudad de Génova y sus alrededores. Leopold, mi abuelo paterno, había investigado a fondo nuestra historia familiar y había

Prior to driving to Sestri Ponente itself, I decided to visit the Genoa Historical Archives to see whether I could get some help and guidance before visiting the town. I figured this would be advantageous and would save time and effort. My grandfather had done well in his research, ascertaining that Sestri Ponente was the town from where our only known Italian ancestor had come from, but I had little else to go on.

The Historical Archive of the Municipality of Genoa is located in the east wing of the Palazzo Ducale on Piazza Giacomo Matteotti. This institution is remarkable, not only for the wealth of materials it houses but also for its meticulous attention to preservation. The holdings include original manuscripts, holographs, drawings, and cartography. In addition, and key as far as my research was concerned, they also held archives pertinent to Genoa’s annexed municipalities, together with censuses, records regarding military conscriptions, and civil registration material. In advance of my visit, I had booked a place to search the censuses and civil registration documentation. From experience, I knew that the task of finding any information relating to my ancestors was not going to be easy, but it was worth a try. After searching the old registers for some time and finding nothing, I decided I was not going to waste any more time and sought the direct advice of the Archives staff. Their advice was simple, go to Sestri Ponente and arrange to view the legacy birth, death, and marriage register held in the churches of the town.

The journey to Sestri Ponente by car takes around fifteen minutes. A small village today considered an industrial suburb of Genoa, Sestri Ponente was founded around the second century CE. With the expansion of the port of Genoa, the town saw economic growth thanks to the rise of industry. By the end of the first decade of the 20th century, Sestri Ponente had ironworks, saw-mills, and shipbuilding yards. Today the suburb has a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

We parked the car and made our way to Via Sestri, the town’s main street which is pedestrianised and full of shops, restaurants, and businesses. I wanted to immerse myself in the town of my ancestors, so we stopped for lunch at Panificio, a little bistro full

averiguado que Franco Antonio Pittaluga, nacido en Sestri Ponente en 1801, había viajado a Gibraltar con trece años en 1814. Probablemente acompañado de familiares y amigos, Franco Antonio llegó a Gibraltar en busca de trabajo. Por razones que ignoro no regresó a Sestri Ponente, donde vivían sus padres y su familia. Siete años más tarde, en 1821, se casó con Juana, una muchacha de la zona, estableciendo así mi línea familiar paterna en Gibraltar. Mi intención era visitar Sestri Ponente para intentar ampliar la investigación sobre la familia de mi abuelo. Los principales objetivos con respecto a esta investigación eran la actualización de mi árbol genealógico y el posible descubrimiento de antepasados italianos desconocidos. Antes de conducir hasta Sestri Ponente propiamente dicho, decidí visitar el Archivo Histórico de Génova para ver si podía obtener alguna ayuda y orientación antes de visitar la ciudad. Supuse que sería ventajoso y ahorraría tiempo y esfuerzo. Mi abuelo había hecho un buen trabajo de investigación, comprobando que Sestri Ponente era la ciudad de la que procedía nuestro único antepasado italiano conocido, pero yo no tenía mucho más en lo que basarme.

El Archivo Histórico del Ayuntamiento de Génova se encuentra en el ala este del Palacio Ducal, en la plaza Giacomo Matteotti. Esta institución es notable, no sólo por la riqueza de los materiales que alberga, sino también por su meticulosa atención a la conservación. Los fondos incluyen manuscritos originales, hologramas, dibujos y cartografía. Además, y esto es fundamental para mi investigación, también se conservan archivos relativos a los municipios anexionados a Génova, junto con censos, registros de reclutamiento militar y material de registro civil. Con antelación a mi visita, había reservado un lugar para consultar los censos y la documentación del registro civil. Por experiencia, sabía que la tarea de encontrar cualquier información relacionada con mis antepasados no iba a ser fácil, pero merecía la pena intentarlo. Después de buscar en los registros antiguos durante algún tiempo y no encontrar nada, decidí que no iba a perder más tiempo y pedí consejo directamente al personal de los Archivos. Su consejo fue sencillo: ir a Sestri Ponente y concertar una cita para ver los registros de nacimientos, defunciones y matrimonios conservados en las iglesias de la ciudad.

of locals. We had pizza and pandolce, a traditional Genoese sweet bread made with flour, sugar, eggs, butter, raisins, candied fruits, and sometimes pine nuts and almonds. After lunch we walked to the Basilica di Nostra Signora Assunta di Sestri Ponente, situated on Piazza Mameli, one of the town’s central squares. The basilica is a significant religious and historical landmark in the area and holds cultural importance for the local community. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is known for its distinctive architecture and artistic elements.

I was interested in viewing the old registry books held by the church. We waited without a prior appointment for a clergy member or church authority to show up. After about an hour, a young Asian looking priest appeared from a door next to the main altar. I approached him and respectfully asked whether it was possible to view the birth, death, and marriage books. He declined without hesitation but offered to pass on my details to a genealogist who had permission to look at the old church records. I wrote down all my details and put them in an envelope together with some money. At that point we decided to return to our hotel in Genoa. I was disappointed that I had not been able to examine the old church records. On the other hand, I was happy that I had been able to spend some quality time immersed in the little commune where my Italian ancestors lived long ago. Our time in Genoa had ended. In the morning we would initiate the last leg of our Italian road trip. This stretch would take us north to Milan, capital of Lombardy, second principal city by population in Italy after Rome.

Post Script

Two weeks after the end of our road trip, I received an email from Antonio Rombo an Italian genealogist. The priest at Sestri Ponente had very kindly passed on my details. Subsequently, Antonio, through the ecclesiastical registry records, managed to trace my parental family line back to Francesco Pittaluga, who is recorded as having married in Genoa in 1658. With Antonio’s invaluable help I have been able to update my parental family tree which now —I am proud to say— extends back ten generations, more than three hundred years, to the middle of the 17th century!

El viaje a Sestri Ponente en coche dura unos quince minutos. Sestri Ponente, un pequeño pueblo hoy considerado un suburbio industrial de Génova, se fundó en torno al siglo II de nuestra era. Con la expansión del puerto de Génova, la ciudad experimentó un crecimiento económico gracias al auge de la industria. A finales de la primera década del siglo XX, Sestri Ponente contaba con ferrerías, aserraderos y astilleros. En la actualidad, el barrio es una mezcla de zonas residenciales, comerciales e industriales.

Aparcamos el coche y nos dirigimos a Via Sestri, la calle principal de la ciudad, peatonal y llena de tiendas, restaurantes y comercios. Quería sumergirme en la ciudad de mis antepasados, así que paramos a comer en Panificio, un pequeño bistró lleno de lugareños. Comimos pizza y pandolce, un pan dulce tradicional genovés hecho con harina, azúcar, huevos, mantequilla, pasas, frutas confitadas y, a veces, piñones y almendras. Después de comer nos dirigimos a la Basílica de Nuestra Señora Assunta de Sestri Ponente, situada en la Piazza Mameli, una de las plazas centrales de la ciudad. La basílica es un importante hito religioso e histórico de la zona y tiene importancia cultural para la comunidad local. Está dedicada a la Virgen María y es conocida por su peculiar arquitectura y sus elementos artísticos. Me interesaba ver los antiguos libros de registro que conserva la iglesia. Esperamos sin cita previa a que apareciera algún clérigo o autoridad eclesiástica. Al cabo de una hora, un joven sacerdote de aspecto asiático apareció por una puerta junto al altar mayor. Me acerqué a él y le pregunté respetuosamente si era posible ver los libros de nacimientos, defunciones y matrimonios. Se negó sin vacilar, pero se ofreció a pasar mis datos a un genealogista que tenía permiso para consultar los registros antiguos de la iglesia. Escribí todos mis datos y los metí en un sobre junto con algo de dinero. En ese momento decidimos regresar a nuestro hotel en Génova. Me sentí decepcionado por no haber podido examinar los antiguos registros eclesiásticos. Por otro lado, me alegré de haber podido pasar algún tiempo de calidad inmerso en la pequeña comuna donde mis antepasados italianos vivieron hace mucho tiempo. Nuestro tiempo en Génova había terminado. Por la mañana iniciaríamos la última etapa de nuestro viaje por carretera italiana. Este tramo nos llevaría

al norte, a Milán, capital de Lombardía, segunda ciudad por población de Italia después de Roma.

Post Scriptum

Dos semanas después de terminar nuestro viaje por carretera, recibí un correo electrónico de Antonio Rombo, un genealogista italiano. El cura de Sestri Ponente había tenido la amabilidad de comunicarle mis datos. Posteriormente, Antonio, a través de los registros eclesiásticos, consiguió rastrear mi línea familiar paterna hasta Francesco Pittaluga, de quien consta que se casó en Génova en 1658. Con la inestimable ayuda de Antonio he podido actualizar mi árbol genealógico paterno, que ahora —me enorgullece decirlo— se remonta diez generaciones atrás, más de trescientos años, ¡hasta mediados del siglo XVII!

If there is an inherent characteristic of the Andalusian culture, it is the coexistence of the three religions of the book. Although with the logical ups and downs that could have occurred during almost eight centuries of coexistence, this is an absolutely undeniable fact despite the fact that some contemporary currents of ahistorical political revisionism insist on denying it. Christians and Jews were protected by the Islamic jurisprudence derived from the Pact of Omar. In Al-Andalus, mixed marriages were not exceptional, nor were changes of religious confession throughout life, but, above all, what was a constant were the joint celebrations of many of the most important feasts of the liturgical calendars of the three great Abrahamic religions. This was something that caused many headaches for bishops, alfaquies and rabbis. It is well known that comparative theology is the greatest enemy of religious fanaticism or fundamentalism. Let us think for a moment what it would mean to live naturally, on a daily basis, among three different religions. It is easy to imagine what would be the position of the Andalusian people before the dogmas of faith of each one of them. Perhaps this is the reason for the reputation we have in Andalusia of being of relaxed customs or of relativizing every axiom or precept, especially if it comes from the power, whether earthly or heavenly. Moreover, the main religious festivals, present and past, have a pagan origin, since they are born from the observation and understanding of the cycles of Nature. There is nothing more universal than the astronomical rhythms and the subsequent evolution of the seasons, which are the ones that mark a good part of human activities. No one can believe that Jesus Christ was born on the dates of the winter solstice, or that St. John was born exactly on the dates of the summer solstice. Their birthdays were moved there so that pagans or converts would not have to change their ancestral and deep-rooted customs. The cultural and religious syncretism has always facilitated the portability from one cult to another to promote increases in clientele without demanding great personal sacrifices, maintaining even the number and date of the most important commemorations of the year. One of these global holidays is the celebration of the triumph of light over darkness at the solstice. It is

Si hay una característica inherente a la cultura andalusí, es la coexistencia en su seno de las tres religiones del libro. Aunque con los lógicos altibajos que pudieran haber acontecido durante casi ocho siglos de convivencia, este un hecho absolutamente innegable a pesar de que algunas corrientes coetáneas de revisionismo político ahistórico insistan en negarlo. Cristianos y judíos estaban protegidos por la jurisprudencia islámica derivada del Pacto de Omar. En Al Ándalus no eran excepcionales los matrimonios mixtos, ni los cambios de confesión religiosa a lo largo de la vida pero, sobre todo, lo que fue una constante eran las celebraciones conjuntas de muchas de las fiestas más importantes de los calendarios litúrgicos de las tres grandes religiones abrahámicas.

Eso era algo que provocaba muchos dolores de cabeza a obispos, alfaquíes y rabinos. Se sabe que la teología comparada es la mayor enemiga de los fanatismos o fundamentalismos religiosos. Pensemos por un momento qué significaría vivir cotidianamente, con naturalidad, entre tres religiones diferentes. Es fácil imaginar cuál sería la postura del pueblo andalusí antes los dogmas de fe de cada una de ellas. Quizá viene de ahí esa fama que tenemos en Andalucía de ser de costumbres relajadas o de relativizar todo axioma o precepto, especialmente si viene desde el poder, ya sea este terrenal o celestial. Aún más, las principales fiestas religiosas, presentes y pasadas, tienen un origen pagano, ya que nacen de la observación y comprensión de los ciclos de la Naturaleza. No hay nada más universal que los ritmos astronómicos y el subsiguiente devenir de las estaciones, que son las que marcan buena parte de las actividades humanas. Nadie puede creer que Jesucristo naciera en las fechas del solsticio de invierno, o que San Juan lo hiciera exactamente en las de verano. Hasta allí se trasladaron sus natalicios para que los paganos o conversos no tuviesen que cambiar sus ancestrales y arraigadas costumbres. El sincretismo cultural y religioso siempre ha facilitado la portabilidad de un culto a otro para promover los aumentos de clientela sin exigir grandes sacrificios personales, manteniendo hasta el número y la fecha de las conmemoraciones más magnas del año. Una de estas fiestas globales es la celebración del triunfo de la luz sobre la oscuridad en el solsticio. Obviamente es, ante todo, una fiesta solar que

obviously, first and foremost, a solar festival marking the exaltation of life, the arrival of good weather and the beginning of a period of renewal. It is the time to ask for blessings, good omens, abundant harvests... but it is also a time of magic, purification and personal growth. All this list of wishes for good fortune deserved great official public pomp and circumstance to amplify them. In Al Ándalus all gods celebrated this ephemeris. In fact, a well-known poem, the Romance del Cautiverio de Guarinos (Romance of the Captivity of Guarinos), originally from the songs of minstrels of the XIV or XV century, collected it in this way: Days come and go the feast of St. John: in which Moors and Christians make great solemnity: the Moors spread sedge the Christians myrtle and the Jews aneas for the most honorable feast.

For the Andalusian Muslims, the solar celebration par excellence was called Ansara and was one of the most important of the year. On June 24, horse races, skill contests, costume parties, great feasts and games of reeds were organized as a simulation of medieval tournaments that have survived until very recently. Nor could they miss the usual poetry contests and duels in verse, similar to the "mano a mano" of flamenco fandangos or chacarrá campogibraltareño own, most likely derived from the famous Moorish zambras. Although the summer solstice festivities are usually associated with those colorful bonfires that must be jumped over up to seven times to obtain the protection of the sun king during the rest of the year, the rituals associated with water were also very common in our latitudes. Not for nothing did they choose St. John, "the Baptist" by immersion, to embody the spirit of the celebration among the Christian community. Ritual baths and washings, watering of streets decorated with plants, leaving clothes uncovered for the night dew to bless them, walks and pilgrimages to fountains to drink from the magical waters... are some of the practices related to the liquid element that

marca la exaltación de la vida, la llegada del buen tiempo y el inicio de un periodo de renovación. Es el momento de pedir bendiciones, buenos augurios, abundantes cosechas… pero también es tiempo de magia, de purificación, de crecimiento personal. Todo este elenco de deseos de buenaventuranzas merecía grandes fastos públicos oficiales para amplificarlos. En Al Ándalus todo dios celebraba esta efemérides. De hecho así lo recogía un conocido poema, el Romance del Cautiverio de Guarinos, originario de cantos de juglares del siglo XIV o XV:

Van y vienen días la fiesta era de San Juan: en que moros y cristianos hacen gran solemnidad: los moros esparcen juncia los cristianos arrayán y los judíos aneas por la fiesta más honrar.

Para los musulmanes andalusíes, la celebración solar por antonomasia se llamaba Ansara y era una de las más importantes del año. El 24 de junio se organizaban carreras de caballos, concursos de destreza, fiestas de disfraces, grandes comilonas y juegos de cañas a modo de simulación de torneos medievales que han pervivido hasta fechas bien próximas. Tampoco podían faltar los habituales certámenes poéticos y duelos en verso, parecidos a los «mano a mano» de fandangos flamencos o del propio chacarrá campogibraltareño, muy probablemente derivado de las famosas zambras moriscas. Aunque las fiestas del solsticio de verano se suelen asociar con esas vistosas hogueras que es necesario saltar hasta siete veces para conseguir la protección del astro rey durante el resto del año, los rituales asociados con el agua también eran muy habituales en nuestras latitudes. No en vano eligieron a San Juan, «el bautista» por inmersión, para encarnar el espíritu del festejo entre la comunidad cristiana. Baños y lavados rituales, riego de calles engalanadas con plantas, dejar la ropa al raso para que el rocío nocturno la bendiga, caminatas y romerías con destino en fuentes para beber de las mágicas aguas,… son algunas de las prácticas relacionadas con el líquido elemento que tenían lugar

took place throughout Al Ándalus, many of which survive to the present day.

After the Christian conquest, part of the Andalusian population of Muslim and Jewish religion settled mainly in northern Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. As could not be otherwise, they brought with them their beliefs, traditions and popular customs, the essence of that Andalusian culture that remains so alive in the south of the Mediterranean. In a way, the exiles returned to build an Andalusian society on the other side of the Strait, although without the southern Christian population, which was allowed to remain in their lands after the Castilian invasion.

Thus, the Ansara continued to be practiced uninterruptedly south of the Strait, both by the population descended from Al-Andalus, as well as by the Amazigh people until very recently. On the beaches of Mdiq, Rincón and other towns in the vicinity of Tetuán, festivities were held on June 24, with fires, food, music, ritual baths in the sea and boat rides. In the mountains, the protagonism was more the bonfires in the shortest night of the year. And, as the medieval canons dictated, many people wore their best traditional clothes but always in light tones. The Ansara marked the turning point of the year when the dark winter clothes were put away and replaced by predominantly white ones, more suitable for the summer season.

As far as we know, the solstice was celebrated assiduously until shortly before the end of the last century and, from then on, little by little, it disappeared from more and more places until it almost disappeared. Fortunately, since a few years ago, the local authorities of the southern shore of the Strait are trying to bring it back and give it back the shine it once had. They have already organized several coastal "Water Festivals", which is what the Spanish settlers called them during the Protectorate. Let's hope that soon it will again be part of the calendar of unmissable festivals throughout northern Morocco, as it was for so many hundreds of years.

Tras la conquista cristiana, parte de la población andalusí de religión musulmana y judía se estableció principalmente en el norte de Marruecos, Túnez y Argelia. Como no podía ser de otra manera, llevaron consigo sus creencias, tradiciones y costumbres populares, la esencia de esa cultura andaluza que permanece tan viva al sur del Mediterráneo. En cierto modo, los exiliados volvieron a construir una sociedad andalusí al otro lado del Estrecho, aunque sin la población cristiana sureña, a la que sí se le permitió permanecer en sus tierras después de la invasión castellana.

Así, la Ansara se siguió practicando ininterrumpidamente al sur del Estrecho, tanto por la población descendiente de Al Ándalus, como por el pueblo amazigh hasta fechas bien cercanas. En las playas de Mdiq, Rincón y otras poblaciones de las inmediaciones de Tetuán se celebraban durante el 24 de junio, fiestas con fuegos, comida, música, baños rituales en el mar y paseos en barca. En la montaña, el protagonismo lo tenían más las hogueras en la noche más corta del año. Y, como marcaban los cánones medievales, mucha gente vestía sus mejores galas tradicionales pero siempre en tonos claros. La Ansara marcaba el punto de inflexión del año en el que se guardaba la ropa oscura de invierno y se sustituía por otras predominantemente blancas, más aptas para la época estival.

Que tengamos noticias, el solsticio se festejó asiduamente hasta poco antes de finales del siglo pasado y, a partir de ahí, poco a poco, fue desapareciendo de más y más lugares hasta casi desaparecer. Afortunadamente, desde hace unos pocos años, las autoridades locales de la orilla sur del Estrecho la están tratando de volver a recuperar y devolverle el brillo que una vez tuvieron. Ya han organizado varias «Fiestas del Agua» litorales, que es como las llamaban los colonos españoles durante el Protectorado. Esperemos que pronto vuelva a formar parte del calendario de fiestas ineludibles de todo norte de Marruecos, como así fue durante tantos cientos de años.

The almojábanas

Muslims and Mozarabs not only celebrated together Ansara and San Juan. They also ate at the same time the delicacies that were prepared especially for that day. Among all of them, one cake stands out that has managed to transcend time and space to become practically universal, as has happened with so many elements of the Andalusian heritage. This is the almojábanas, whose name -al-muyabbana- literally means cheese, since cheese is its most important ingredient. They were actually eaten all year round and were one of the most popular sweets in all of Al-Andalus. They were sold in the streets and in the souks, usually with a little honey on top. With them they used to entertain guests as a token of hospitality, but where you could never miss a rich almojábana on any table was during the celebration of the Ansara.

In short, the almojábana is a kind of bun made with flour, oil, eggs, cheese and sugar. In Antequera, the land of the mollete, it was known as mollete real, which indicates the importance that the population gave to this cake. Even today they are still made in some areas of Aragón and the Levante, but without the cheese in the recipe, so that only the name of the original is preserved. Fortunately, it has recently been recovered, in addition to Antequera, in Jerez de

la Frontera -thanks to the initiative of a local chain of well-known pastry shops and the Archaeological Museum- where, according to some medieval authors, the best of all Al Andalus were eaten. But where they have continued to be eaten uninterruptedly for more than 500 years, in addition to northern Morocco, is in Latin America. Apparently, they were taken across the Atlantic by Moorish emigrants fleeing the pressure of the Inquisition. Or perhaps by women forcibly transferred to the New Continent by order of Ferdinand the Catholic, the socalled "white slaves", concubines at the service of the conquerors, new Christians with whom the expatriates could marry, something that could not happen with the native Indians, considered as infidels. Be that as it may, in Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and other American countries, millions of almojábanas are currently consumed every year, festivals are organized dedicated to this pastry and there is even talk of the existence of an "almojábana culture".

Transcending the purely gastronomic, it is incredible to observe how such an unknown and insignificant piece of Andalusian heritage survives so vigorously thousands of kilometers away from its original center of influence. Pure allegory of what happened to one of the most brilliant cultures in the history of mankind.

Las almojábanas

Musulmanes y mozárabes no sólo celebraban juntos Ansara y San Juan. También, comían a la par las delicatessen que se preparaban especialmente para ese día. De entre todas ellas, destaca un pastel que ha logrado trascender el tiempo y el espacio hasta convertirse en prácticamente universal, como ha sucedido con tantos elementos del patrimonio andalusí. Se trata de las almojábanas, cuyo nombre —al-muyabbana— significa literalmente quesada, ya que el queso es su ingrediente más destacado. Realmente se comían todo el año y era uno de los dulces más populares de todo Al Ándalus. Se vendían en la calles y en los zocos, normalmente con un poco de miel por encima. Con ellos se solía agasajar a los invitados como muestra de hospitalidad, pero donde jamás podía faltar nunca una rica almojábana en ninguna mesa era durante la celebración de la Ansara.

En resumidas cuentas, la almojábana es una especie de bollo que se confecciona con harina, aceite, huevos, queso y azúcar. En Antequera, la tierra del mollete, se le conoció como mollete real, lo que indica la importancia que la población le daba a este pastel. Todavía hoy se siguen haciendo en algunas zonas de Aragón y el Levante, pero ya sin el queso en su receta, por lo que de original sólo conservan el nombre. Por suerte, se ha recuperado recientemente, además de en Antequera, en Je-

rez de la Frontera —gracias a la iniciativa de una cadena local de conocidas pastelerías y al Museo Arqueológico— donde, según algunos autores medievales, se comían las mejores de toda Al Andalus. Pero donde se han seguido comiendo ininterrumpidamente durante más de 500 años, además de en el norte de Marruecos, es en América Latina. Al parecer, fueron llevadas allende el Atlántico por moriscos emigrados que huían de la presión de la Inquisición. O quizá por mujeres trasladadas a la fuerza al Nuevo Continente por orden de Fernando el católico, las llamadas «esclavas blancas», concubinas al servicio de los conquistadores, cristianas nuevas con las que sí que se podían casar los expatriados, algo que no podía ocurrir con las nativas de indias, consideradas como infieles. Sea como fuere, en Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico y otros países americanos, en la actualidad se consumen millones de almojábanas al año, se organizan festivales dedicados a este pastelito e incluso se habla de la existencia de una «cultura de la almojábana». Trascendiendo lo puramente gastronómico, resulta increíble observar cómo una pizca, en principio tan desconocida e insignificante, del patrimonio andalusí, perviva de manera tan vigorosa a miles de kilómetros de su originario centro irradiador. Pura alegoría de lo sucedido con una de las culturas más brillantes de la historia de la Humanidad.

Community is a sense of feeling connected to the environment around you. Whether urban or natural, it is a sense of place.

When hospitals and local institutions invest in biophilic design, this becomes an inviting space for loved ones and patients to reflect and be together.

In developing Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, the designers knew that they needed to look beyond the building to the land it occupied. Enter, Yishun Pond Park. This 2.3-hectare park sits in front of the hospital and as part of the design, they renovated the entire pond and surrounding ecosystem. With the goal of hosting 100 species, they created freshwater environments to enhance local biodiversity. Yishun Pond Park was meant to give back to the community, rather than becoming another development that too often takes away from local residents.

Cuando los hospitales y las instituciones locales invierten en diseño biofílico, éste se convierte en un espacio acogedor para que los seres queridos y los pacientes reflexionen y estén juntos.

Al desarrollar el Hospital Khoo Teck Puat, los diseñadores sabían que tenían que mirar más allá del edificio, al terreno que ocupaba. Así surgió el Parque del Estanque de Yishun. Este parque de 2,3 hectáreas se encuentra frente al hospital y, como parte del diseño, renovaron todo el estanque y el ecosistema circundante. Con el objetivo de albergar 100 especies, crearon entornos de agua dulce para mejorar la biodiversidad local. El Parque del Estanque de Yishun se concibió para devolver algo a la comunidad, en lugar de convertirse en otra urbanización que con demasiada frecuencia se lleva por delante a los residentes locales.

It’s thanks to staff, members, volunteers, and all sponsors that Clubhouse Gibraltar is still running today. All of those involved, work very hard to spread the important message of mental health. Here’s to many more years! One of the main components of Clubhouse is the Employment Programme. Employment is key to recovery and mental well-being and the Clubhouse Employment Programme supports Clubhouse members in exercising this right on their path to recovery with effective strategies for mitigating the challenges its members face as they seek employment. A personal message from the writer of this blog, who is a Clubhouse member themselves: I have had amazing opportunities thanks to Clubhouse Gibraltar. I was struggling with a daily routine due to suffering from depression and anxiety. Going to Clubhouse has helped me keep busy with different tasks. Eventually I got a temporary job from one of their sponsors which is going very well. I am also looking to further my education on which Clubhouse has been very supportive. I hope to go to university and work in the mental health field. Or if not, I would like to become a regular volunteer for mental health charities to help spread the message and share my story. ADVENTURE IN THE NATURAL PARK LOS ALCORNOCALES CANYONING IN THE "BUITRERAS"

Our adventure takes place in one of the most emblematic Natural Parks of Andalusia: Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Located in the municipality of Cortes de la Frontera. This canyon is known as the Cathedral of the Andalusian canyons.

The canyoning consists of the descent of a river, normally in its high section, where due to the erosion it models the river with very diverse forms where we will have to improvise handrails, jumps or rappels.

It is valued as a level 2 canyon, due to its duration, physical and technical hardness. This canyon is considered as the cathedral of the canyons of Andalusia due to its spectacular and verticality of its walls.

For the adventure, we will have all the necessary technical material: 5 mm wetsuits, harness, helmet, and collective technical material for the descent.

The Ravine

The Guadiario River as it passes through Cortes de la Frontera has excavated an impressive canyon known as "Las Buitreras". Its name is due to the high population of vultures that nest in its entrances. We start with a vertiginous downhill trail to the Puente de los Alemanes. The adventure is a constant climbing, rappelling, sliding, jumping...

It carries water even in summer and you have to swim for several stretches. During the tour, we will pass through areas so narrow and closed that we will go practically in the dark.

AVENTURA EN EL PARQUE NATURAL LOS ALCORNOCALES BARRANQUISMO EN LA «BUITRERAS»

Nuestra aventura se realiza en uno de los Parques Naturales más emblemáticos de Andalucía: Parque Natural de los Alcornocales. Situado en el municipio de Cortes de la Frontera. Este barranco es conocido como La Catedral delos barrancos de Andalucía.

El barranquismo consiste en el descenso de un río, normalmente en su tramo alto, donde debido a la erosión modela el río con formas muy diversas donde tendremos que improvisar pasamanos, saltos o ráppeles.

Está valorado como un barranco de nivel 2, debido a la duracíón, dureza física y técnica del mismo. Este cañón es considerado como la catedral de los ba-rrancos de Andalucía debido a su espec-tacularidad y verticalidad de sus paredes.

Para la aventura se dipondrá de todo el material técnico necesario: neoprenos 5 mm, arnés, casco, y material técnico colectivo para el descenso.

El Barranco

El Río Guadiario a su paso por Cortes de la Frontera ha excavado un cañón impresionante conocido como el de “Las Buitreras”. Su nombre se debe a la alta población de buitres que anidan en sus entrantes.

Comenzamos con un sendero vertiginoso de bajada hasta el Puente de los Alemanes. La aventura es un constante trepar, rapelar, toboganear, saltar… Lleva agua incluso en verano y hay que nadar durante varios tramos. Durante el recorrido pasaremos por zonas tan estrechas y cerradas que iremos prácticamente a oscuras.

Es necesario llevar comida en los botes estancos para reponer fuerzas. Con un sendero final de 40 minutos nos llevará a los vehículos cerca de la central eléctrica de El Colmenar.

The reservoir and the village of Los Hurones was created in 1964, a hidden gem in the middle of nature, which supplies drinking water, electricity, and irrigation to the urban centers of the province of Cadiz. It might seem that we are in a Canadian place for the density of its forest or in a Galician village for its similarity in architecture, the houses that form this small village were used by employees and technicians who worked in the execution of this dam.

But we are in Cadiz, specifically the term of San Jose del Valle, near Algar and the towns of El Bosque and Ubrique.

We will make a route of about 10 kilometers with a low / medium difficulty, we will know the flora, fauna, and bathing place where it is impossible not to stop to take a picture because of its beauty, the Majaceite river can be seen in this area with a peculiar charm.

Arriving at the village we will also see the three institutions that are still preserved, hospital, school, and church dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar, we will cross the bridge, from which you can already see the impressive height of the dam, which collects almost 900 hectares with a capacity of 135 cubic hectometers that flows into the reservoir of Guadalcacín.

We will have lunch at Venta El Pantano, a place that persists over time thanks to the quality of its dishes and the attention of its employees, we can buy local products such as the famous village bread, molletes, sweets, olives and many more…

After lunch, we will go up to the dam to walk around it, see the grandeur of that territory and learn how it works.

From there and looking closely at the village it seems that the place resembles a traditional Christmas nativity scene because of the physiognomy of its houses and the environment.

You cannot miss the history behind this hidden paradise in the Natural Park Los Alcornocales.

El pantano y el poblado de Los Hurones se creó en el año 1964, una joya escondida en medio de la naturaleza, que abastece de agua potable, electricidad y riego a los núcleos urbanos de la provincia de Cádiz.

Podría parecer que nos encontramos en un paraje canadiense por la densidad de su bosque o en un pueblo gallego por su semejanza en la arquitectura, las casas que forman esta pequeña aldea fueron utilizadas por los empleados y técnicos que trabajaron en la ejecución de esta presa.

Pero estamos en Cádiz, concretamente el término de San José del Valle, próximo a Algar y a las poblaciones de El Bosque y Ubrique.

Realizaremos una ruta de unos 10 kilómetros con una dificultad baja/media, conoceremos la flora, fauna y lugar de baños donde es imposible no pararse a tomar una foto debido a su belleza, el rio Majaceite se deja ver en esta zona con un encanto peculiar.

Al llegar al poblado además veremos las tres instituciones que aún se conservan, hospital, colegio e iglesia dedicada a la Virgen del Pilar, cruzaremos el puente, desde el que ya se puede ver la impresionante altura de la presa, que recoge casi 900 hectáreas con una capacidad de 135 hectómetros cúbicos que desemboca en el embalse de Guadalcacín.

Haremos el almuerzo en la Venta El Pantano, un lugar que persiste en el tiempo gracias a la calidad de sus platos y la atención de sus empleados, podremos comprar productos de la tierra como el famoso pan de pueblo, molletes, dulces, aceitunas y un largo etc…

Tras la sobremesa, subiremos a la presa para pasear por ella, divisar la grandeza de aquel territorio y conocer el funcionamiento de esta.

Desde ahí y fijándote bien en el poblado pareciese que el lugar se asemeja por la fisionomía de sus casas y el entorno a un belén tradicional de Navidad No puedes perderte la historia que hay detrás de este paraíso escondido en pleno Parque Natural Los Alcornocales.

The Centennial Park, with an extension of 11 hectares has valuable elements of historical and cultural heritage of the city of Algeciras.

It is located within the boundaries of the "Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean Andalusia-Morocco" this reserve extends through some of the most emblematic territories of the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga in Spain and the provinces of Tangier, Tetuan, Larache and Chefchaouen in northern Morocco.

Of great importance, a part of the coastline is dominated by the flysch, a geological phenomenon created millions of years ago from the whims of an earth that decided to twist and play with the laws of physics in its own way, produced by the tectonic movements of the intercontinental plates.

A park where we can admire flora, wild olive, cork oak, Moorish gorse, jerguen, gall oak and its fauna, such as crustaceans Orchestia mediterranea and Tylos sardous, lizards, snake necklace, common bat, brown rat, sandpipers, terns and herons among others, as its location makes it an important place to observe the passage of migratory birds, as well as cetaceans, and a splendid view of the coast of the neighboring continent.

On the left side we are accompanied by the Chinarral which has fine sands and calm waters sheltered by a small inlet. The bottom of its waters is largely rocky highlighting several reefs a few meters

from the coast known as Las Hermanas, very dangerous for navigation, and to the right of the Getares inlet is the Getares beach whose sands, of fine thickness, come mainly from the contributions of the many seasonal streams that flow into the area and in particular the river Pícaro that formed in the past a marsh and a dune arrow.

For our route it is necessary to wear appropriate clothing for the terrain and the weather. We will start this trail by visiting the Interpretation Center of the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean "Strait of Gibraltar" at the entrance of the park.

At the edge of the coast we will find four viewpoints where we will take some pictures of the spectacular views, a few meters away, in the rest area, we will observe the flysch and listen to the explanation of how they were formed.

If we are lucky we will be able to observe some dolphins dancing in the waters of the Bay of Algeciras and enjoy some of their jumps.

Moving forward, we will go back in time visiting historical sites of the park such as the 16th century watchtower, ruins of the fort of San Garcia, machine gun nests and bunker.

Before continuing we will climb the iron lookout tower from where we can have a 360º view of the city and its surroundings.

We will finish the trail at the entrance of the park, where we can enjoy a refreshment or coffee in its facilities.

El parque del Centenario, con una extensión de 11 hectáreas cuenta con valiosos elementos del patrimonio histórico y cultural de la ciudad de Algeciras.

Se encuentra dentro de los límites de la «Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental del Mediterráneo Andalucía-Marruecos» esta reserva se extiende por algunos de los territorios más emblemáticos de las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga, en España y de las provincias de Tánger, Tetuán, Larache y Chefchaouen en el Norte de Marruecos.

De gran importancia, una parte de la costa la protagonizan los flysch, un fenómeno geológico creado hace millones de años a partir de los caprichos de una tierra que decidió retorcerse y jugar con las leyes de la física a su manera, producida por los movimientos tectónicos de las placas intercontinentales.

Un parque en el que podremos admirar flora, acebuche, alcornoque, aulaga morisca, jerguen, quejigo y su fauna, como crustáceos Orchestia mediterránea y Tylos sardous, lagartijas, culebra de collar, murciélago común, rata parda, correlimos, charranes y garzas entre otras, ya que su situación hace que sea un lugar importante para la observación del paso de las aves migratorias, así como de los cetáceos, y una espléndida visión de la costa del continente vecino. Al lado izquierdo nos acompaña el Chinarral que posee arenas finas y aguas tranquilas al abrigo de una pequeña ensenada. El fondo de sus aguas es en gran parte rocoso destacando varios arrecifes a unos metros de la costa conocidos como Las Hermanas, muy peligrosos para la navegación, y a la derecha

de la ensenada de Getares se encuentra la playa de Getares cuyas arenas, de fino grosor, proceden principalmente de las aportaciones de los numerosos arroyos estacionales que desembocan en la zona y en particular del río Pícaro que formó en el pasado una marisma y una flecha dunar.

Para nuestra ruta es necesario llevar ropa adecuada al terrero y a la climatología, iniciaremos este sendero visitando en la entrada del parque el Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental del Mediterráneo «Estrecho de Gibraltar».

Al borde de la costa nos encontraremos con cuatros miradores donde tomaremos algunas fotos de las espectaculares vistas, a escasos metros, en el área de descanso, observaremos los flysch y escucharemos la explicación de cómo se formaron. Con suerte podremos observar algún delfín danzando en las aguas de la Bahía de Algeciras y obsequiarnos con algunas de sus saltos.

Adelantando nuestros pasos, retrocederemos en el tiempo visitando lugares históricos del parque como son la torre almenara del siglo XVI, ruinas del fuerte de San García, nidos de ametralladores y bunker.

Antes de continuar subiremos a la Torre mirador de hierro desde donde podremos tener una visión de 360º de la ciudad y su entorno.

Finalizaremos el sendero en la entrada del parque, donde podremos disfrutar de un refresco o café en sus instalaciones.

In the Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the Pinar del Rey is located between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera, in Cadiz.

Its origin dates back to 1800, this place was chosen to plant pine trees (Pinus Pinea) brought from Vejer de la Frontera, and thus obtain wood for the construction of ships.

It currently consists of a recreational area with a picnic area and barbecues, the Alhaja stream, the Nature Classroom and a botanical garden. In addition, there are two trails: El Cerro del Águila and Tajo del Pajarraco.

En el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, se ubica el Pinar del Rey entre los términos municipales de San Roque y Castellar de la Frontera, en Cádiz.

Su origen se remonta a 1800, este lugar fue elegido para plantar ejemplares de pinos piñoneros (Pinus Pinea) traídos desde Vejer de la Frontera, y obtener así madera para la construcción de navíos.

Actualmente consta de un área recreativa con una zona de picnic y barbacoas, el arroyo de Alhaja, el Aula de Naturaleza y un jardín botánico. Además, existen dos senderos: El Cerro del Águila y el Tajo del Pajarraco.

Un lugar peculiar, de clima suave, y paso de ruta de aves migratorias. Sus condiciones ambientales lo convierten en un paraíso para la flora. Incluso podemos ver algunas plantas que únicamente se dan en el norte de España y en las Islas Canarias. Recorreremos un bosque mixto, con alcornoques, quejigos, álamos, alisos y fresnos, con una extensa variedad de especies botánicas, algunas de ellas amenazadas. Y por supuesto descubriremos su rica y variada fauna.

Además, el Pinar del Rey, formó parte de un asentamiento arenoso de fondos marinos, con lo cual podremos encontrar fácilmente conchas y piezas marinas.

Para comenzar la actividad dejaremos el coche al final del aparcamiento de la zona recreativa del Pinar del Rey (San Roque), es importante llevar agua, protección solar, (opcional esterilla para suelo y cámara de fotos).

The treatment, cure, and care provided to deal with some evil or disease was known to the Greeks as therapeia. Our word “treatment” is derived from this. It is normal for someone to wonder how they will administer the forest to them if we add it. Will it be in pills, syrups, or serum? It doesn’t harm, so don’t worry. Even with all the humor, individuals who read us need to understand that we lead the individual to a total immersion in Nature, in some type of natural habitat, preferably woods.

Using the forest as therapy means that we will use the benefits provided by Nature as a way to intervene in people’s health. Not only in their physical health, but also in their mental and social health; even, for those who so wish, in their spiritual health.

Each of these people has a specific need, or a specific health problem, or a personal difficulty. Taking into account these personal needs, we will try to find the most concise way to repair it, doing it in a structured way.

The approach of the Forest Baths is always therapeutic. The professionals who are dedicated to the Forest Baths are trained to be able to collaborate with guarantees with health professionals, making available to the general public, to the Institutions, all the set of interventions that we have.

What are we talking about then? We are talking about promoting healthy lifestyles, those that improve our quality of life. We are talking about relieving the day-to-day stress in which we live. We are also talking about preventing or dealing with burnout, that which is caused by work and production. Finally, we talk about more specific interventions on the health of any person, always under supervision.

Los griegos llamaban therapeia al remedio, al tratamiento, a los cuidados para hacer frente a algún mal, a alguna enfermedad. De ahí viene nuestra palabra terapia. Si le añadimos lo del bosque es normal que alguien pueda pensar, ¿cómo me van a dar el bosque?, ¿en pastillas, jarabes, lo tendrán en suero? No se preocupen, no duele. Bromas aparte, lo que tienen que saber los que nos lean es que llevamos a la persona a realizar una inmersión completa, mente y cuerpo, en la Naturaleza, en algún tipo de entorno natural, especialmente los bosques.

Usar el bosque como terapia significa que utilizaremos los beneficios que procuran la Naturaleza, como una forma de intervenir en la salud de las personas. No solo en su salud física, también en la mental y en la social; incluso, para los que así lo deseen, en la salud espiritual. Cada una de esas personas tiene una necesidad específica, o un problema de salud concreto, o alguna dificultad personal. Teniendo en cuenta estas necesidades personales trataremos de buscar la forma más concisa de repararlo, haciéndolo de manera estructurada.

El enfoque de los Baños de Bosque es siempre terapéutico. Los profesionales que nos dedicamos a los Baños de Bosque estamos formados para poder colaborar con garantías con los profesionales de salud, poniendo a disposición del público en general, de las Instituciones, todo el conjunto de intervenciones que tenemos.

¿De qué estamos hablando entonces? Hablamos de promover estilos de vida saludables, de eso que mejoran nuestra calidad de vida. Hablamos de aliviar el estrés del día a día en el que vivimos. Hablamos también de prevenir o hacer frente al burnout, ése que nos provoca el trabajo y la producción. Hablamos, por último, de intervenciones más específicas sobre la salud de cualquier persona siempre bajo supervisión.
