MEDSTEPS5CHALLENGE

This is to officially announce that the 10th anniversary of the MedSteps5Challenge will take place on 20th April 2024.

The initiative will see participants attempt to climb the Med Steps up to five times in a day in a bid to raise money for Cancer Relief Gibraltar.

Fundraising efforts began back in 2015 when Mark Cooper, joined by his friends Graham Dyer and Simon Morgan, cycled from London to Gibraltar. As an extra fundraiser, Mark came up with the idea of walking or running up and down the Mediterranean Steps 5 times in a day. This first MedSteps5 Challenge raised £6,000 with over £100,000 collected for the charity in the eight years since it began.

The MedSteps5Challenge is not only the Prison Service’s annual charity event, but a firm fixture on the Rock’s community event calendar.

Next year, to celebrate the 10th anniversary, and to make the event bigger and better, the organisers have attracted lead sponsorship from Sovereign and local estate agents Chestertons, with both having made the commitment to support the event for the next 3 years. Livescore and Image Graphics also supporting. Mark commented: “Generous sponsorship now means the MedSteps5Challenge can attract an even greater following, with all participants now receiving a quality event T-shirt with their £15 entry fee. Any participant who raises more than £150 through JustGiving, will get free entry including a T Shirt. On completion of three or five laps, participants will also

receive a medal. Mark added that 100% of funds raised go to Cancer Relief Gibraltar.

Both Sovereign and Chestertons are committed to promoting the event to attract a record attendance and a record sum for Cancer Relief.

Besides the challenge itself, Mark with his co-organiser John Pacheco are also planning a walk from Castellar to Gibraltar on 23rd March. Further details will follow on this event but we are hoping to provide coaches to Castellar for this.

Mark Cooper said: “There are two reasons for this walk from Castellar, the first is, the 5 laps of the MedSteps is just over 17km in distance, so walking from Castellar would be a great final training session prior to the event (Castellar - Gibraltar is 20km).

Secondly, anyone who is unable to attend this year’s event or feels that climbing may be too much for them, can take this alternative opportunity to raise funds for the Cancer Relief Centre.”

The organisers recommend opening a Just Giving Page for Cancer Relief Gibraltar (www.justgiving. com/g-s-c-r )for participants on either event (MedSteps5 or Castellar) with the total raised, being added to the final tally after the actual MedSteps event.

The MedSteps5 team will have two open days to promote the event on 8th March and 10th April at the Piazza, 0900 – 1500.

Se anuncia oficialmente que el 10º aniversario del MedSteps5Challenge tendrá lugar el 20 de abril de 2024. En esta iniciativa, los participantes intentarán subir los Med Steps hasta cinco veces en un día en

un intento de recaudar fondos para Cancer Relief Gibraltar.

Los esfuerzos para recaudar fondos comenzaron en 2015, cuando Mark Cooper, acompañado por sus amigos Graham Dyer y Simon Morgan, fue en bicicleta de Londres a Gibraltar. Para recaudar fondos adicionales, a Mark se le ocurrió la idea de subir y bajar andando los Mediterranean Steps 5 veces en un día. Este primer Desafío MedSteps5 recaudó 6.000 libras, y en los ocho años transcurridos desde su inicio se han recaudado más de 100.000 libras para la organización benéfica.

El Desafío MedSteps5 no es sólo el acto benéfico anual del Servicio Penitenciario, sino también un fijo en el calendario de actos comunitarios de la Roca.

Además del reto en sí, Mark y su coorganizador John Pacheco también están planeando una marcha desde Castellar a Gibraltar el 23 de marzo. Se darán más detalles sobre este evento, pero esperamos poder proporcionar autocares a Castellar para el mismo.

Mark Cooper dijo: «Hay dos razones para esta caminata desde Castellar, la primera es que las 5 vueltas del MedSteps son algo más de 17km de distancia, por lo que caminar desde Castellar sería una gran sesión de entrenamiento final antes del evento (Castellar - Gibraltar son 20km). REWILDING

In a remarkable display of conservation efforts, the Department of the Environment and the Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS) have joined forces to re-establish the native wildlife of the Rock, Gibraltar. Their ongoing 'Re-wilding' initiative, which has already witnessed the successful restoration of Barbary partridge and European Rabbit populations, has now entered an exhilarating phase. This year, Vincent Robba and the dedicated Rehabilitation Team, including Gilbert Gonzalez and Stanley Olivero, achieved a significant milestone by

breeding and releasing two young Bonelli's Eagles from a discreet location on the Upper Rock. The Bonelli's Eagle, a medium-sized raptor, had once been a resident of the Rock until the mid-20th century, potentially driven away by disturbances during World War II.

The process began with a captive pair of Bonelli's Eagles rearing two fledglings at the Bird of Prey Centre earlier this spring. These young eagles were then carefully transported to a release site, a purpose-built facility crafted by the Upper Rock Team under the guidance of Reuben Senior. The release of the eagles was closely monitored by the dedicated team and Wildlife Warden Chris Durante.

The vision for this initiative is to repeat this process annually, nurturing these majestic eagles until maturity. The ultimate hope is that, once fully grown, they will return to the Rock and reestablish their nests in the wild, much like they did for centuries in the past.

The commitment to 'Re-wilding' Gibraltar's natural habitat remains unwavering, with plans in place to continue these efforts and restore the biodiversity of the region to its former glory. This inspiring collaboration between environmental stewards and passionate individuals offers a glimmer of hope for the resurgence of native species, marking a significant step towards a more vibrant and balanced ecosystem on the Rock.

Re-Salvajear

En un notable despliegue de esfuerzos de conservación, el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y la Sociedad Ornitológica y de Historia Natural de Gibraltar (GONHS) han unido sus fuerzas para restablecer la fauna autóctona del Peñón de Gibraltar. Su iniciativa en curso «Re-wilding», que ya ha sido testigo del éxito de la restauración de las poblaciones de perdiz de Berbería y conejo europeo, ha entrado ahora en una fase estimulante.

Este año, Vincent Robba y el dedicado Equipo de Rehabilitación, que incluye a Gilbert González y Stanley Olivero, lograron un hito importante al criar y liberar dos jóvenes águilas perdiceras en un lugar discreto del Peñón Superior. El águila perdicera, una rapaz de tamaño mediano, había sido residente del Peñón hasta mediados del siglo XX, potencialmente

ahuyentada por los disturbios durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

El proceso empezó con una pareja cautiva de águilas perdiceras que criaron dos volantones en el Centro de Aves Rapaces a principios de primavera. A continuación, estas jóvenes águilas fueron transportadas cuidadosamente a un lugar de liberación, una instalación construida a tal efecto por el equipo de Upper Rock bajo la dirección de Reuben Senior. La liberación de las águilas fue supervisada de cerca por el entregado equipo y por el guardabosques Chris Durante.

SEABIN PROJECT

One of our most loyal readers and subscriber, Anabel Sheep, sends us information about an Australian project called Seabin Project. An innovative solution to marine pollution. The project's floating litter baskets catch everything from bags and bottles to paper, oils and fuels.

The baskets are placed in the water on a small dock and, with the help of a pump, suck in the water and trap the trash. The water is filtered and returns clean to the ocean. Each of the baskets can collect up to 90,000 plastic bags per year.

The creators of the project, Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, have a double objective. On the one hand, they want to clean the seas of the garbage that pollutes and harms marine life. On the other hand, they want to raise awareness about marine pollution so that, in the future, both animals and people can enjoy a cleaner and healthier ocean.

In short, the Seabin Project's floating trash cans are an effective solution to marine pollution. They are a way to clean up the seas and, at the same time, make people aware of the importance of protecting the environment.

Una de nuestras lectoras y suscriptora más fieles, Anabel Sheep, nos envía información sobre un proyecto australiano llamado Seabin Proyect. Una solución innovadora para la contaminación marina. Los cestos de basura flotantes del proyecto atrapan todo tipo de residuos, desde bolsas y botellas hasta papel, aceites y combustibles.

Los cestos se colocan en el agua sobre un pequeño muelle y, con ayuda de una bomba, succionan el agua y atrapan la basura. El agua se filtra y vuelve limpia al océano. Cada uno de los cestos puede juntar hasta 90 mil bolsas de plástico por año.

Los creadores del proyecto, Andrew Turton y Pete Ceglinski, tienen un doble objetivo. Por un lado, quieren limpiar los mares de la basura que contamina y perjudica a la vida marina. Por otro lado, quieren concientizar a la gente sobre la contaminación marina para que, en el futuro, tanto los animales como las personas puedan disfrutar de un océano más limpio y sano.

En resumen, los cestos de basura flotantes del Seabin Proyect son una solución eficaz para la contaminación marina. Son una forma de limpiar los mares y, al mismo tiempo, concientizar a la gente sobre la importancia de proteger el medio ambiente.

CAXARA AWARD

In 2014, with the collaboration between the City Council of Casares and SIE Caxara, the project "Knowing the Sierra de Utrera" was born, a research project of the Karst of Utrera and Speleology. One of the main projects of collaboration between the City Council of Casares and SIE Caxara is the archaeological research carried out in the Hediondas Subterranean System, in which the City Council sponsors the archaeological activity in the cavity.

The main bases of the Project "Knowing the Sierra de Utrera" are focused on the speleological dissemination in the schools of Casares and the towns near the Utrera Karst. Talks are given in schools and then a visit to a cave in the area so that students receive in situ knowledge about the subway environment, its characteristics, the cave habitat, heritage, and so on. In addition, there are a multitude of activities, workshops, outings, lectures...

Premio Caxara

En 2014, con la colaboración entre el Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Casares y la SIE Caxara, nace el proyecto «Conocer la Sierra de Utrera», un proyecto de investigación del Karst de Utrera y de Espeleología.

Uno de los principales proyectos de colaboración entre el Ayuntamiento de Casares y la SIE Caxara es la investigación arqueológica que se lleva a cabo en el Sistema Subterráneo de las Hediondas, en la que el Ayuntamiento efectúa el patrocinio de la actividad arqueológica en la cavidad.

Las bases principales del Proyecto se «Conocer la Sierra de Utrera» se centran en la divulgación espeleológica en los colegios de Casares y de las localidades cercanas al Karst de la Utrera. Se llevan a cabo charlas en los centros educativos y posteriormente, una visita a una cavidad de la zona para que los alumnos reciban in situ los conocimientos sobre el medio subterráneo, sus características, el hábitat cavernícola, patrimonio , etcétera. Aunque se suman multitud de trabajos, actividades, talleres, salidas, conferencias...

Por ese inmenso trabajo entre Ayuntamiento de Casares y la SIE Caxara, el jurado de estos reconoce otorgar el Premio ESPELEO 2024 de Conservación al proyecto «Conocer la Sierra de la Utrera».

THE NIGHT OF THE BATS

On October 11, "The night of the bats" was held on the occasion of Euro Bats 2023 in the town of La Línea de la Concepción. With great success of participation, about 150 people gathered.

Organized by the Society of Speleological Research Caxara, with the collaboration of the delegation of Environment of the city of La Línea de la Concepción, the Biological Station of Doñana and the Spanish Society for the Conservation and Study of Bats (SECEMU), various activities were held in the Reina Sofía Park.

These consisted of informative talks on the exciting world of bats and the exhibition "Our Nocturnal Neighbors", the meeting point was the Pasarela del Drago. In the evening, a walk-through various area of the Reina Sofia Park was held with the lively participants to carry out a workshop on locating bats with ultrasound detectors.

The activities, which began at 7.30 p.m., were open to all audiences, especially children and their parents. The Bat Night lasted well into the night. It was closed thanking the participants for their attendance, as well as giving a small souvenir to the youngest and not so young.

The Bat Night has been celebrated in more than thirty countries since 1997 in collaboration with specialized entities to inform citizens about their way of life. It is part of Eurobats 2023, an agreement on the conservation of European bat populations to protect 55 species on the continent. The Unión Internationale de Spéleologie, Karst-3C, SECEMU (Spanish Society for the Conservation and Study of Bats), the Estación Biológica de Doñana-Csic, SIE Caxara de Casares and the delegation of Medio Ambiente collaborated in the La Línea activity.

La noche de los murciélagos.

El pasado día 11 de octubre se llevó a cabo «La noche de los murciélagos» con motivo del Euro Bats 2023 en la localidad de La Línea de la Concepción. Con gran éxito de participación, unas 150 personas se dieron cita.

Organizada por la Sociedad de Investigaciones Espeleológicas Caxara, con la colaboración de la delegación de Medio Ambiente del ayuntamiento de

la Línea de la Concepción, la Estación Biológica de Doñana y la Sociedad Española para la Conservación y Estudio de los Murciélagos (SECEMU) se celebraron diversas actividades en el Parque Reina Sofía. Estás se componían de charlas informativas sobre el apasionante mundo de los murciélagos y se mostró la exposición «Nuestros Vecinos Nocturnos» el punto de encuentro fue la Pasarela del Drago. A la caída de la tarde, se realizó un paseo por diversas zonas del Parque Reina Sofía con los animados participantes para realizar un taller de localización de murciélagos con detectores de ultrasonidos.

Las actividades, empezaron a las 19.30 horas, abiertas para todos los públicos, especialmente niños y sus padres. La Noche de los Murciélagos se prolongó hasta bien entrada la noche. Ésta se cerró agradeciendo a los participantes su asistencia, así como entregando un pequeño recuerdo a los más pequeños y no tan pequeños.

La Noche de los murciélagos se celebra en más de treinta países desde 1997 en colaboración con entidades especializadas para informar a la ciudadanía sobre su forma de vida. Forma parte de Eurobats 2023, acuerdo sobre la conservación de poblaciones de murciélagos europeos para proteger a 55 especies del continente. En la actividad de La Línea colaboraron la Unión Internationale de Spéleologie, Karst-3C, SECEMU, ( Sociedad Española para la Conservación y Estudio de los Murciélagos), la Estación Biológica de Doñana-Csic, SIE Caxara de Casares y la delegación de Medio.

Since 2015 we are very proud to say that Metalrok Ltd has been providing Gibraltar with a Recycling Service at the premises delivered by the government of Gibraltar Ecopark which is a joint public and private partnership located at 8 Flint Road. There has been an increase in Recycling but even so our daily waste stream contains goods which are perfectly suited to be reused not been recycled ending up in the landfill polluting the environment.

Together we can turn this around by reusing, preventing pollution, reducing usage of raw materials, sustaining the environment for future generations thus preventing them from ending in landfill and sea.

There is a need for these items in places like Senegal in West Africa were there are areas of extreme Poverty. with your cooperation we would like to meet their necessities by helping to provide them with donated unwanted items. At present we are only accepting donations for clothing and bedlinen.

We are collecting items that are still good for purpose and in usable condition in a bid to give them a new lease of life. Kindly take note that we will not make ourselves responsible for the collection of broken down items. The circumstances these people unfortunately live in deserve a sense of dignity and pride. Please only get in touch for items that will enhance and enrich their livelihoods.

The Lost Rainforests of Britain.

In 2020, writer and activist Guy Shrubsole moved from London to Devon. While exploring the region's landscape, he discovered a habitat type he had not seen before: temperate rainforest. Fascinated, he spent the next few months researching the history, ecology and distribution of these rainforests in Britain.

In his book "Britain's Lost Rainforests," Shrub-

sole takes the reader on a journey through these little-known ecosystems. The book describes the Atlantic oak and hazel forests of the Western Highlands and the Lake District, as well as the rainforests of Wales, Devon and Cornwall. Shrubsole warns that, without immediate political and public support, we risk losing these forests forever. His book is a call to action to restore these unique ecosystems to the places they once were.

En 2020, el escritor y activista Guy Shrubsole se mudó de Londres a Devon. Mientras exploraba el paisaje de la región, descubrió un tipo de hábitat que no había visto antes: la selva tropical templada. The book "The Right Fashion" invites us to reflect on the consequences of our clothing choices. The title of the book has a double meaning: on the one hand, it refers to having the right amount of clothes in the closet, so that unnecessary consumerism is not generated. On the other hand, it refers to choo-

sing clothes that have been produced ethically and sustainably, so that no one loses out.

The book argues that clothes are inanimate, but that we can imbue them with a sense of conscience and honesty by committing to knowing better who makes our clothes. If we continue to buy clothes without thinking about the consequences, we will continue to contribute to an unfair and environmentally damaging system.

The book proposes other alternatives to buying new clothing, such as second-hand clothing, repair and exchange. These alternatives can help us reduce our environmental impact and support ethical businesses and producers.

In early '98 we came across an article about rural tourism in a magazine and decided to take a weekend trip to Alájar, in Huelva. What started out as a two-day getaway turned into a trip of a lifetime. And only an hour away from Seville. This is our trip back in time. Discovering Alájar and the Sierra de Aracena.

A principios del 98 nos encontramos con un artículo sobre turismo rural en una revista y decidimos hacer un viaje de fin de semana a Alájar, en Huelva. Lo que comenzó como escapada de dos días se convirtió en un viaje para toda la vida. Y a solo una hora de Sevilla. Este es nuestro viaje en el tiempo.

Discovering Alájar and the Sierra de Aracena.

In April 1998, a weekend trip from Seville changed our lives forever. We discovered the charming village of Alájar and the pristine Sierra de Aracena. Let me tell you something: it is one of the best kept secrets in Spain. We fell in love with the place and rented a house in the village that October to explore the area even more.

The moment we arrived in Alájar, we felt transported back in time. We will never forget that feeling of arriving in the Sierra on a Friday night, leaving everything in the house to sit at restaurante El Padrino with a bottle of red wine and devour the delicious food that was set before us. It was the perfect escape from the bustling city of Seville, which was still on top of its game after the 1992 Expo. Alájar was everything we needed: relaxed, authentic and full of natural beauty. We spent the whole month exploring the area, walking, visiting and talking to the locals.

It didn't take us long to return! We decided to book in the same month of October, but the following year, to repeat the experience, in a different house. We were surprised that the locals remembered us from the previous year and made us feel just as welcome. The weather was not as clement this time, so we walked less and used the car more to tour the nearest towns. One day we saw a ruined house for sale in Hinojales and a seed was sown, what if.... We realized that we had to find a way to move to Alájar permanently. We were ready for a change, and Alájar was the perfect place to start over.

A decade of waiting.

In 1999 we learned through rumours that the couple who ran the Posada de Alájar also had plans to change their lives. That filled us with enthusiasm. Their plans to leave fit perfectly with our plans to stay. Sometimes life leaves us with wonderful coincidences, mysterious synchronicities that escape our understanding.

What could be easier than taking over an existing business? It was an administrative concession that the city council renewed every 4 years. There was our chance. We could give the place a new life, without the financial commitment of starting from scratch.

Unfortunately, it was only rumors and the couple were staying until the end of their contract, with the

En abril de 1998, un viaje de fin de semana desde Sevilla, cambió nuestras vidas para siempre. Descubrimos el encantador pueblo de Alájar y la prístina Sierra de Aracena. Les contaré algo: es uno de los secretos mejor guardados de España. Nos enamoramos del lugar y alquilamos una casa en el pueblo ese octubre para explorar la zona aún más.

En el momento en que llegamos a Alájar, nos sentimos transportados en el tiempo. Nunca olvidaremos esa sensación de llegar a la Sierra un viernes por la noche, dejar todo en la casa para sentarnos en el Restaurante El Padrino con una botella de vino tinto y devorar la deliciosa comida que nos pusieron delante. Fue el escape perfecto de la bulliciosa ciudad de Sevilla, que aún estaba en la cima después de la Expo de 1992. Alájar era todo lo que necesitábamos: relajado, auténtico y lleno de belleza natural. Pasamos todo el mes explorando la zona, caminando, visitando y hablando con los lugareños.

¡No tardamos mucho en volver! Decidimos reservar en el mismo mes de octubre, pero del año siguiente, para repetir la experiencia, en una casa diferente. Nos sorprendió que la gente del pueblo nos recordaba del año anterior y nos hizo sentir igual de bienvenidos. El clima no fue tan clemente esta vez, así que caminamos menos y usamos más el coche para recorrer los pueblos más cercanos. Un día vimos una casa en ruinas en venta, en Hinojales. Aquella anécdota empezó a mover los engranajes del pensamiento, sobre todo los de nuestros corazones: qué pasaría si... Nos dimos cuenta que teníamos que encontrar la manera de mudarnos a Alájar de manera permanente. Estábamos listos para un cambio, y Alájar era el lugar perfecto para comenzar de nuevo.

Una década de espera. En 1999 nos enteramos por rumores que la pareja que dirigía la Posada de Alájar tenía también planes de cambio en sus vidas. Aquello nos llenó de entusiasmo. Sus planes de irse encajaban a la perfección con nuestros planes de quedarnos. A veces la vida nos deja casualidades maravillosas, sincronías misteriosas que se escapan de nuestra comprensión.

¿Qué podría ser más fácil que hacerse cargo de un negocio en marcha? Era una concesión adminis-

possibility of renewal. Our castle in the air vanished at the same speed at which we built it. Life also throws cold water on you. What was made clear from this swing of emotions is that we were sure that it was time for a change of scenery and leave Seville. We had to be patient.

In 2002 we went to live in Hull, UK. It was there that Angel got a job as a teacher. I soon found work in sales for a fresh oriental food producer and we decided we needed to buy a house and put down roots. We brought our furniture from Spain and set about decorating the house to our taste, including a shiny new kitchen. Time went by, slowly but surely.

In September 2003, a friend in Alájar informed us that the couple running the Posada would not renew the concession and that the application for the administrative concession was open. We drew up our business plan and decided to submit our application in person. Angel went on his October holiday and all we could do was cross our fingers that no one had submitted a better bid.

We had made the best offer and, coupled with my qualifications and previous hospitality experience, we were offered the concession. We couldn't believe it was all coming together as we dreamed it would! We gave in our notice, put the house on the market and started planning the move. It looks like that old investment in patience was finally paying off.

In January 2004 we finally took possession of La Posada de Alájar, a 10-room hotel in the centre of the village. At first it was hard, we wanted to make our mark, to make it unique and more sustainable, but it was not ours to make all the changes we would have liked, nor was there outside space. Somehow, we knew that La Posada was not going to be the end of our story but just the beginning. So, we started looking for houses to buy in the midst of the economic boom and found the one on Colon 12, which overlooked a large lot. It was ideal, on the edge of town with few neighbours, but only a couple of minutes’ walk to the town square. We were convinced and the deal was sealed - we were congratulated in town before the ink was dry!

The house was a wreck. Turning it into the luxury, eco-friendly B&B we dreamed of was going to be a huge renovation project. It was going to take more patience. We got the backing of the banks thanks to

Lamentablemente, solo eran rumores y la pareja se quedaba hasta el final de su contrato, con la posibilidad de renovarlo. Nuestro castillo en el aire se esfumó a la misma velocidad a la que lo construimos. La vida también te echa jarros de agua fría. Lo que sacamos en claro de este vaivén de emociones es que estábamos seguros que era hora de cambiar de aires y dejar Sevilla. Había que tener paciencia. En el 2002 nos fuimos a vivir a Hull, en el Reino Unido. Allí fue donde Ángel consiguió trabajo de profesor. Pronto encontré trabajo como comercial para un productor de alimentos frescos orientales y decidimos que necesitábamos comprar una casa y echar raíces. Mudamos nuestros muebles desde España y nos pusimos a decorar la casa a nuestro gusto, incluyendo una cocina nueva y reluciente. El tiempo fue pasando, sin prisa, pero sin pausa.

En septiembre de 2003, un amigo en Alájar nos informó que la pareja que dirigía la Posada no renovaría la concesión y que se abría el plazo de solicitudes para la concesión administrativa. Elaboramos nuestro plan de negocio y decidimos presentar nuestra solicitud en persona. Ángel fue en sus vacaciones de octubre y lo único que pudimos hacer fue cruzar los dedos para que nadie hubiera presentado una oferta mejor.

Habíamos hecho la mejor oferta y, junto con mi titulación y experiencia previa en hostelería, se nos ofreció la concesión. ¡No podíamos creer que todo estuviera saliendo como lo soñábamos! Renunciamos a nuestros trabajos, pusimos la casa en venta y comenzamos a planificar la mudanza. Parece que esa vieja inversión en paciencia finalmente estaba dando sus frutos.

En enero de 2004 tomamos por fin posesión de La Posada de Alájar, un hotel de 10 habitaciones en el centro del pueblo. Al principio fue duro, queríamos dejar nuestra marca, hacerlo único y más sostenible, pero no era nuestro para hacer todos los cambios que nos hubieran gustado, tampoco había espacio exterior. De alguna manera supimos que La Posada no iba a ser el final de nuestra historia sino el principio. Así que comenzamos a buscar casas para com-

If you have ever been involved in a renovation project you will know what we mean, just remember we are in Andalucia. So here we are in 2008 with the bureaucracy wearing out our patience.

The good, the bad and the ugly.

We finally managed to open our doors in July 2011. Those were jubilant moments. More than a decade later we can take stock of what has happened to us. The good and the bad, what has filled us with happiness and what has filled us with sorrow.

We have experienced such wonderful moments. Like celebrating our daughter's birthday every year in our privileged space. We have also attracted guests from all over the world. We have been visited from as far away as Australia, Canada and the United States. And of course, the loyalty of many of you who have returned to stay with us on several occasions. Some of you have even been here in each of the years we have been open.

Ángel's classes. Once a teacher always a teacher! Our Iberico Ham School, Olive Oil Tasting, Cheese Tasting, guided hikes and Spanish classes. Angel loves the fact that everyone gets to take away a little more of the Sierra de Aracena.

Lucy's cooking. Starting with my mother-in-law's recipes and developing traditional recipes into my own distinctive meals. Providing gastronomic memories for our guests is immensely satisfying.

Our green credentials. We are the first accommodation provider in Andalucia to have been awarded the European Ecolabel, a standard of environmental excellence awarded to products and services that meet high environmental standards throughout their life cycle: from the extraction of raw materials, to production, distribution and disposal.

But as I say, we have not only had light during this time. We have also gone through some dark times that have tested us, not only as owners, but also as people.

Era ideal, en el borde del pueblo con pocos vecinos, pero a solo un par de minutos a pie de la plaza del pueblo. Estábamos convencidos y se cerró el trato. ¡Nos felicitaron en el pueblo antes de que la tinta estuviera seca! La casa era una ruina. Convertirla en el B&B de lujo y ecológico que soñábamos iba a ser un enorme proyecto de renovación. Nos iba a hacer falta más paciencia. Conseguimos el respaldo de los bancos gracias a nuestro historial durante los primeros años en La Posada de Alájar y comenzamos a solicitar permisos de construcción, subvenciones y todo lo demás que se necesita. Si alguna vez has estado involucrado en un proyecto de renovación sabrás a lo que nos referimos, solo recuerda que estamos en Andalucía. Así llegamos a 2008 con la burocracia agotando nuestra paciencia.

De lo bueno, lo malo y lo peor

Finalmente logramos abrir nuestras puertas en julio de 2011. Fueron momentos jubilosos. Más de una década después podemos hacer un balance de lo que nos ha pasado. Se relacionan sin solución de continuidad lo bueno y lo malo, lo que nos ha llenado de felicidad y lo que nos ha llenado de pesar.

Hemos vivido momentos maravillosos y estupendos. Como celebrar el cumpleaños de nuestra hija todos los años en nuestro espacio privilegiado. También atraer a huéspedes de todo el mundo. Nos han visitado desde lugares tan lejanos como Australia, Canadá y los Estados Unidos. Y por supuesto, la fidelidad de muchos de vosotros que habéis regresado a hospedaros con nosotros en varias ocasiones. Algunos incluso han estado aquí en cada uno de los años que hemos estado abiertos.

Las clases de Ángel. ¡Una vez maestro, siempre maestro! Nuestra Escuela de Jamón Ibérico, Cata de Aceite de Oliva, Cata de Quesos, caminatas guiadas y clases de español. A Ángel le encanta el hecho de que todos se lleven un poco más de la Sierra de Aracena.

La cocina de Lucy. Comenzando con las recetas de mi suegra y desarrollando recetas tradicionales en mis propias comidas distintivas. Proporcionar recuerdos gastronómicos para nuestros huéspedes es inmensamente satisfactorio.

We had to wait two years to get the building permit before we could start construction. We lived through the rainiest winter on record which stopped construction for 2 months. We had to wait 6 months for the electrical connections to be approved, which prevented us from opening at Easter 2011.

In 2008, right after we bought the property, our business plan fell apart. The financial crisis hit us hard. Hoping to expand a growing business we found our business shrinking. Time can be an ally or an enemy in a business and unfortunately the economic recession did not seem to improve, in fact, it seemed that it would take years for things in southern Spain to get better again. However, little by little things started to improve and we began to see all our hard work, persistence and motivation pay off.

It's a small world.

What do the eruption of a volcano in Iceland in 2011 and the terrible Covid pandemic of 2020 have in common? That everything is related and connected in a world as big as ours. The Icelandic volcano released so much ash that it ended up affecting European airspace. That meant the cancellation of thousands of flights all over Europe. The chaos was imposed with force, even reaching our little corner of southern Spain. There were room cancellations and we had to help our guests who could not return to their homes.

It made us reflect on how an event so far away can have such a huge effect on the travel industry. What we would never have prepared for was what would come next. The Covid pandemic that started in Wuhan at the end of 2019 and would paralyze the entire world months later. For us, professionally, it was cancellations and more cancellations, not knowing when the travel restrictions would end. But we were not oblivious to the terrible suffering caused by the deaths, nor to the suffering of those who were left with after-effects.

Going from strength to strength.

In July 2020, Spain gave the green light to trav¬el and we opened our doors again. What a relief to see Posada San Marcos up and running! Reacting to the "new normal" was a challenge for us - how could we adapt to not only survive, but make the best of these

Nuestras credenciales verdes. Pero como digo no solo hemos tenido luces en este tiempo. También hemos pasado por oscuras sombras que nos han puesto a prueba, no solo como propietarios, también como personas.

Tuvimos que esperar dos años para obtener el permiso de construcción antes de poder comenzar la obra. Vivimos el invierno más lluvioso registrado que nos detuvo la construcción por 2 meses. Tuvimos que esperar 6 meses para que se aprobaran las conexiones eléctricas, lo que nos impidió abrir en Semana Santa de 2011.

En 2008, justo después de comprar la propiedad, nuestro plan de negocio se desmoronó. La crisis financiera también nos pegó de lleno. Esperando expandir un negocio en crecimiento nos encontramos con nuestro negocio reduciéndose. El tiempo puede ser un aliado o un enemigo en un negocio y desafortunadamente la recesión económica parecía no mejorar, de hecho, parecía que tardaría años para que las cosas en el sur de España volvieran a mejorar. Sin embargo, poco a poco las cosas comenzaron a mejorar y empezamos a ver que todo nuestro trabajo duro, persistencia y motivación daban sus frutos.

El mundo es un pañuelo.

¿Qué tienen en común la erupción de un volcán en Islandia en 2011 y la terrible pandemia de Covid de 2020? Que todo está relacionado y conectado en un mundo tan grande como el nuestro. El volcán de Islandia desprendió tanta ceniza que terminó afectando el espacio aéreo europeo. Eso supuso la cancelación de miles de vuelos por toda Europa. El caos se impuso con fuerza llegando incluso a ésta

As the summer faded, the bug resurfaced in new waves and bookings began to dwindle more than we liked. By October, we had a dose of reality: a challenging winter was coming and we needed a plan. That's when we had a moment of inspiration: we sent an email to all our English-speaking guests, offering them a fantastic gourmet Christmas hamper with local produce. The response was nothing short of extraordinary, providing us with a lifeline during those uncertain times.

If during a good part of our life we realized how important patience is, in this last stage we have realized how important creativity, innovation, not being too afraid to change, to look for alternatives. When the restrictions tightened once again, we were required, once again, to make innovations. We had to be creative! We sent another e-mail, offering something new. Angel offered Spanish classes via videoconference, while Lucy showed off her culinary skills in virtual demonstrations. The response was overwhelming: over 30 people signed up for the Spanish classes, Lucy held 10 cooking sessions.... We also launched a "buy now, visit anytime" offer that some generous customers decided to take up. These small initiatives brightened up some pretty dark months, believe me.

The tough times of the past few years have made us realize that connecting with our guests is very important. That's why we embarked on another adventure, the launch of our newsletter "Secrets of La Sierra". Initially we sent it out every month, in 2021; now as a quarterly event. You can't imagine how much we enjoy getting responses from people! Once we asked "How do you like your coffee?" and received the delightful response of "In Alájar!". So much encapsulated in those 2 words. It's little things like these that make us keep trying to give the best service to our customers, the Sierra de Aracena does the rest. In January 2024 we will celebrate 20 years in Alájar. By the way, I am Lucy.

Aquello nos hizo reflexionar sobre cómo un evento tan lejano puede tener un efecto tan enorme en la industria de viajes. Para lo que nunca nos habríamos preparado fue para lo que vendría después. La pandemia de Covid que comenzó en Wuhan a finales del 2019 y que meses después paralizaría el mundo al completo. Para nosotros, en el plano profesional, fueron cancelaciones y más cancelaciones, sin saber cuándo terminarían las restricciones de viajes. Pero no fuimos ajenos ni al terrible sufrimiento que produjeron las muertes, ni al padecimiento de los que se quedaron con secuelas.

Persistencia puede con todo.

En julio de 2020, España dio luz verde para viajar y abrimos nuestras puertas de nuevo. ¡Qué alivio ver Posada San Marcos en funcionamiento! Reaccionar a la «nueva normalidad» fue todo un desafío para nosotros. ¿Cómo podríamos adaptarnos no solo para sobrevivir, sino para sacar lo mejor de estos tiempos difíciles? Nuestra solución surgió con la transformación de la Posada San Marcos en casa rural para grupos en lugar de nuestro tradicional B&B. Con este movimiento brindamos a los huéspedes la oportunidad de estar juntos como familia o grupo de amigos después del largo confinamiento aquí en España. A medida que el verano se desvanecía, el virus resurgía en nuevas oleadas y las reservas comenzaban a disminuir más de lo que nos gustaba. Para octubre, tuvimos una dosis de realidad: se avecinaba un invierno desafiante y necesitábamos un plan. Fue entonces cuando tuvimos un momento de inspiración: enviamos un correo electrónico a todos nuestros huéspedes de habla inglesa, ofreciéndoles una fantástica cesta de Navidad gourmet con productos locales. La respuesta fue nada menos que extraordinaria, brindándonos un salvavidas durante esos tiempos inciertos.

Si durante una buena parte de nuestra vida nos dimos cuenta de lo importante que es la paciencia, en esta última etapa nos hemos dado cuenta de lo importante que es la creatividad, la innovación, el no tener un excesivo temor a cambiar, a buscar al-

ternativas. Cuando las restricciones se apretaron una vez más se nos exigía, de nuevo, hacer innovaciones. ¡Había que ser creativos! Enviamos otro correo electrónico, ofreciendo algo nuevo. Ángel ofrecía clases de español por videoconferencia, mientras Lucy enseñaba sus habilidades culinarias en demostraciones virtuales. La respuesta fue abrumadora: más de 30 personas se inscribieron en las clases de español, Lucy realizó 10 sesiones de cocina.. Lanzamos además una oferta de "compra ahora, visita cuando quieras" que algunos generosos clientes decidieron aceptar. Estas pequeñas iniciativas iluminaron algunos meses bastante oscuros, créanme.

Los momentos tan duros de estos últimos años

nos han llevado a entender que conectar con nuestros huéspedes es importantísimo. Por eso nos embarcamos en otra aventura, el lanzamiento de nuestro boletín «Secretos de La Sierra». Milan, second largest city in Italy and fourth biggest in the European Union, was to be the final destination of our Italian road trip. The journey which had taken us just under three weeks to complete had been enjoyable and exhilarating, albeit at times rather exhausting. Our Italian adventure took us from romantic Verona to Venice, one of the most famous and visited cities in the world. From Venice we travelled south to Rome, Italy’s capital city. Following Rome, our next destination was Florence, the capital of Tuscany, home of renaissance art and architecture, where we spent a delightful three nights. Our road trip continued west, with stops at Vincci, a charming little village in Tuscany, birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, and Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower. From Pisa, we continued in a north-westerly direction to the Cinque Terre National Park, a string of five, centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. Cinque Terre was followed by a restful stay at Sestri Levante, which lies approximately forty kilometres south-east of Genoa. Our penultimate destination was Genoa itself, the capital city of the Liguria region. Using Genoa as base, we visited the little village of Sestri Ponente, my ancestral home. Today Sestri Ponente has become an industrial suburb of Genoa. To end the road trip, we visited Milan, capital of Lombardy, second most prominent Italian city.

Enticed by the lavish buffet breakfast at Hotel Bristol Palace, our hotel in Genoa, we decided to indulge before heading out to Milan, which is located about one hundred and fifty kilometres to the northeast of Genoa. We entered the classy breakfast hall to be greeted by a team of elegantly dressed service staff offering a wide variety of both continental and local delicacies. The extensive assortment on offer included freshly baked breads, croissants, and pastries. A selection of Italian cured meats like prosciutto, salami, and mortadella, together with a variety of local and international cheeses. Fresh fruits, cereals, and yogurts. A range of egg dishes, and a warm option including sausages, bacon, roasted tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, and the famous Genoese farinata, known as Calentita in Gibraltar. A traditional Ligurian dish from Genoa, the farinata is a classic example of simple peasant food, made by combining chickpea flour, water, and olive oil. Consumed widely in Gibral-

Milán, segunda ciudad más grande de Italia y cuarta de la Unión Europea, iba a ser el destino final de nuestro viaje por carretera a Italia. El viaje, que nos había llevado algo menos de tres semanas, había sido agradable y estimulante, aunque a veces bastante agotador. Nuestra aventura italiana nos llevó de la romántica Verona a Venecia, una de las ciudades más famosas y visitadas del mundo. De Venecia viajamos al sur, a Roma, la capital de Italia. Después de Roma, nuestro siguiente destino fue Florencia, la capital de la Toscana, cuna del arte y la arquitectura renacentistas, donde pasamos tres deliciosas noches. Nuestro viaje por carretera continuó hacia el oeste, con paradas en Vincci, un encantador pueblecito de la Toscana, lugar de nacimiento de Leonardo da Vinci, y Pisa, cuna de la famosa torre inclinada. Desde Pisa, seguimos en dirección noroeste hasta el Parque Nacional de Cinque Terre, una cadena de cinco pueblos costeros centenarios en la escarpada costa de la Riviera italiana. A Cinque Terre le siguió una estancia de descanso en Sestri Levante, a unos cuarenta kilómetros al sureste de Génova. Nuestro penúltimo destino fue la propia Génova, capital de la región de Liguria. Tomando Génova como base, visitamos el pueblecito de Sestri Ponente, mi hogar ancestral. Hoy, Sestri Ponente se ha convertido en un suburbio industrial de Génova. Para terminar el viaje por carretera, visitamos Milán, capital de Lombardía, segunda ciudad italiana en importancia. Atraídos por el suntuoso desayuno bufé del Hotel Bristol Palace, nuestro hotel en Génova, decidimos darnos un capricho antes de salir hacia Milán, situada a unos ciento cincuenta kilómetros al noreste de Génova. Entramos en la elegante sala de desayunos para ser recibidos por un equipo de personal de servicio elegantemente vestido que ofrecía una amplia variedad de delicias continentales y locales. El amplio surtido que se ofrecía incluía panes recién horneados, cruasanes y bollería. Una selección de embutidos italianos como prosciutto, salami y mortadela, junto con una variedad de quesos locales e internacionales. Fruta fresca, cereales y yogures. Una variedad de platos a base de huevo y una opción caliente que incluye salchichas, bacon, tomates asados, champiñones salteados y la famosa farinata genovesa, conocida como Calentita en Gibraltar. tar since time immemorial, the Gibraltarian version which is remarkably similar to the Italian original, has a unique taste and texture, with a crispy exterior and a slightly creamy interior. This dish doesn't really do it for me. Notwithstanding its popularity, I consider the farinata tasteless in its all-encompassing blandness. Whilst acknowledging the important historical connection this dish has with Gibraltar, this time round I gave the farinata a miss, and turned my culinary attention to the plethora of mouthwatering dishes on offer. My wife, on the other hand, did partake and thoroughly enjoyed the farinata.

After a filling breakfast, we headed out of Genoa following the signage for the A7 Autostrada dei Giovi, heading north. Named after a mountain pass called Colle di Giovi, which the route crosses, the A7, a toll motorway, connects Milan to Genoa. The motorway traverses picturesque landscapes and mountainous terrain on its journey north towards Milan. The A7 serves several towns and cities including Tortona and Voghera, where we stopped for coffee. Situated half way between Genoa and Milan, Voghera is a town and commune situated in the Province of Pavia, within the Lombardy region of Italy. Voghera boasts a rich historical heritage that dates back to ancient times. Throughout its history, the town has witnessed the influence of various civilizations, from the Romans to the Lombards and beyond. This diverse history is reflected in the town's architecture, cultural traditions, and local cuisine.

Dark clouds had accompanied us on the motorway up to the point of reaching Voghera. Luckily, rain had not made its presence felt. We parked the car and headed to the area of Palazzo Gounela, a medieval castle, erected by the powerful Visconti (a noble Italian family based in Milan) in the late Middle Ages. Today Palazzo Gounela serves as the town hall and administrative centre. We sat on a terrace café near the castle and ordered espresso coffee. The sky darkened considerably as we waited for our caffeine fix. Without warning a brisk shower of plump raindrops precipitated rapidly from the dark clouds above. We grabbed our things and moved swiftly into the café. On entering the elegantly furnished establishment, I was immediately taken aback by the number of old black and white photographic prints that covered the walls. The waiter explained that the café site had

Este plato no me entusiasma. A pesar de su popularidad, considero que la farinata es de mal gusto en su omnipresente suavidad. Aunque reconozco la importante conexión histórica que este plato tiene con Gibraltar, en esta ocasión descarté la farinata y centré mi atención culinaria en la plétora de deliciosos platos que se ofrecían. Mi mujer, en cambio, sí participó y disfrutó mucho de la farinata.

Tras un copioso desayuno, salimos de Génova siguiendo la señalización de la A7 Autostrada dei Giovi, en dirección norte. Llamada así por un puerto de montaña llamado Colle di Giovi, que la ruta atraviesa, la A7, una autopista de peaje, conecta Milán con Génova. La autopista atraviesa paisajes pintorescos y terrenos montañosos en su viaje hacia el norte, en dirección a Milán. La A7 pasa por varios pueblos y ciudades, como Tortona y Voghera, donde nos detuvimos a tomar un café. Situada a medio camino entre Génova y Milán, Voghera es una ciudad y municipio de la provincia de Pavía, en la región italiana de Lombardía. Voghera posee un rico patrimonio histórico que se remonta a la antigüedad. A lo largo de su historia, la ciudad ha sido testigo de la influencia de diversas civilizaciones, desde los romanos hasta los lombardos y más allá. Aparcamos el coche y nos dirigimos a la zona del Palazzo Gounela, un castillo medieval, erigido por los poderosos Visconti (una noble familia italiana afincada en Milán) a finales de la Edad Media. En la actualidad, el Palazzo Gounela sirve de ayuntamiento y centro administrativo. Nos sentamos en una cafetería con terraza cercana al castillo y pedimos un café espresso. once been a photographic studio and shop, which had been forced to close ten years prior due to low demand and loss of business. The waiter reiterated that what was hanging on the walls was there as a tribute to the old photographic studio, which had served the town of Voghera well for over half a century.

We left the café and surprisingly the rain had stopped, the dark clouds had all but disappeared, with conditions brightening up considerably. As we approached our destination the weather improved further. The city of fashion greeted us with wall-towall sunshine and an all-encompassing Milanese blue sky. We took the A1 that leads on to the city centre and Hotel Rosa Grand Milano, our base in Milan. Located in the centre of the city, the hotel overlooks the historic Piazza Fontana, towards the rear of the spectacular Duomo Cathedral. Offering comfort as well as glamour and chic, Hotel Rosa Grand Milano captures the essence of the Italian capital of fashion.

The origin of the city’s name is uncertain. One theory states the nomenclature derives from the Latin Mediolanum, meaning in the middle of the plain. Mediolanum is a reference to Milan's geographical location within the Po River Valley. Another theory connects the name to the scrofa semilanuta, an ancient Roman statue depicting a sow with six piglets, which has become an established cultural emblem of the city.

Since the mid-20th century, Milan is known as Il Capitale della Moda (The Fashion Capital) due to its prominent role in the fashion industry. After the end of the Second World War, Italian fashion kick-started rapidly to acquire world status and recognition when some of Italy's most iconic fashion houses, such as Gucci, Prada, Versace, and Valentino, were founded in Milan or nearby regions. These brands played a significant role in propelling and elevating Milan to its status as a prestigious capital of world fashion.

Giorgio Armani, world famous Italian fashion designer once said:

"In Milan, fashion is not just clothing; it's an expression of art and culture."

Our Italian road trip was ending. Sadly, we were scheduled to fly back to Malaga in three days’ time, so we decided to cram in as much of this exciting

A medida que nos acercábamos a nuestro destino, el tiempo mejoraba aún más. La ciudad de la moda nos recibe con un sol de justicia y un cielo azul milanés que lo envuelve todo. Tomamos la A1 que lleva al centro de la ciudad y al Hotel Rosa Grand Milano, nuestra base en Milán. city as possible in the little time that remained. The city of Milan is home to many famous landmarks. The most visited include the Duomo, situated in the aptly named Piazza del Duomo. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, among the world's oldest shopping malls and important fashion hub. Teatro alla Scala (La Scala opera house) arguably one of the most important opera venues in the world. Last but not least the Leonardo da Vincci Last Supper Museum that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The existing cathedral (Duomo di Milano) current seat of the Archbishop of Milan is located in the cobbled Piazza del Duomo that forms part of Milan’s Centro Storico (historic city centre area). A reconstruction of an original structure (the new basilica or basilica nova) was completed in 355 CE. In 1075, fire destroyed the new basilica, which was now considerably old, and plans for the construction of the current Duomo di Milano started thereafter. Planning continued for three hundred and eleven years until 1386 when Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo began construction of the current temple that would replace the new basilica. The building was not completed until well into the 18th century, with the final details and changes added in the 19th century. The impressive facade, which is adorned with numerous statues, was completed in the 1800s by order of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was about to be crowned King of Italy at the Duomo

Symbol of Milan's rich history and culture, Duomo di Milano is one of the world’s finest examples of Gothic architecture. The multifaceted structure incorporates intricate spires, statues, and detailed stonework. It covers an area of around 109,641 square feet (10,186 square meters) and can hold up to 40,000 people. The central nave extends to a height of 164 feet (50 meters), making it one of the tallest cathedrals in the world. The Duomo’s interior is beautifully adorned with collections of stained-glass windows, intricate frescoes, and a vast number of statues of a superior quality that's hard to match. The cathedral houses numerous chapels, each with its own unique design and artwork.

Duomo di Milano is simply magnificent! That cathedral, with a hundred needles and buttresses, adorned with three thousand statues, is spectacular. What dazzles the most is its workmanship and raw

Nuestro viaje por Italia tocaba a su fin. Lamentablemente, teníamos que volar de vuelta a Málaga dentro de tres días, así que decidimos aprovechar el poco tiempo que nos quedaba para ver lo más posible de esta apasionante ciudad. Located right next to the Duomo is the distinguished Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, among the oldest, most emblematic, and historic shopping arcades in the world. Situated on the northern side of the cathedral, the complex is one of Milan’s major landmarks and important fashion hubs. Designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, work began in 1865, and completed twelve years later in 1877. Named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first King of Italy, the overriding intention behind the building was to highlight Milan’s modernity and progress during the 19th century. Entering the arcade, I was immediately struck by a sense of grandeur and decadence, aptly manifested by a plethora of luxury boutiques, high-end fashion stores, restaurants, cafes, and bars. The one minor inconvenience of the place is that your pocket must accommodate substantial depth. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is, at the risk of being repetitive, another one of those not to be missed sites for anyone visiting the city.

Milan, distinguished by its highly cultured social tone, is a city full of theatres, the most important of which is Teatro alla Scala (La Scala opera house). Designed by Giuseppe Piermarini, construction began in 1776. The building was completed only two years later, in 1778, a relatively brief period of time considering the scale and complexity of the project. Teatro alla Scala was inaugurated on the 3rd of August 1778, with the premiere of Antonio Salieri's opera Europa Riconosciuta. We devoted the second day of our stay in Milan to this temple of Italian art and culture. In the morning we took a guided tour of the theatre and the museum. The expertly conducted visit took us on a journey of the theatre’s history spanning two hundred and forty years.

The museum opened in 1913, after the acquisition of the Jules Sambon collection. A prestigious archive of memorabilia with links to the celebrated opera house was put up for auction by Sambon , a well-known Italian antique dealer. The reserve auction price was four hundred and fifty thousand liras, a substantial amount at the time. The Italian state together with the initiative of fifty prominent members of the Milanese elite, raised the money which was surprisingly rejected by Sambon . The reason the offer was rejected was

Situado en el lado norte de la catedral, el complejo es uno de los principales hitos de Milán e importante centro de la moda. Diseñado por Giuseppe Mengoni, las obras comenzaron en 1865 y finalizaron doce años más tarde, en 1877. Bautizado con el nombre de Vittorio Emanuele II, primer rey de Italia, el edificio pretendía destacar la modernidad y el progreso de Milán durante el siglo XIX. The expert tour guide led us through a captivating range of ornate halls and rooms which exhibited elevated levels of classic grandeur and opulence. The Ridotto dei Palchi, the first visible hall, houses marble and bronze busts of the most important composers and conductors of the period, including Verdi, Toscanini, and Puccini. The Piermarni and Paisiello room holds an important collection of musical instruments. The Commedia dell’Arte room is a space dedicated to a popular form of mask theatre that established itself in Italy between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Belcanto Divas room, dedicated to the prima donnas who sang during the golden age of Milan and La Scala. The Verdi and La Scala in the 19th Century room is full of paintings by 19th Century artists, all connected to the opera house. The Pasta, Patti, Rossini, and Wagner room, holds a variety of portraits and sculptures including two exquisite portraits of Adelina Patti, a singer and actress who flourished during the second half of the 19th century, and a fabulous bronze bust of Rossini by Marocchettii. The Verdis memorabilia room contains objects and artefacts that were originally part of the Sambon collection. The Theatre in the early 20th century room tells the story of how the theatre dealt with the turbulent years of the fin de siècle leading to the Great War. The Verdi, Boito and the stars of the 20th Century room is dedicated to the late 19th and 20th centuries. Surprisingly, Luciano Pavarotti one of Italy’s most celebrated opera stars was not featured in the museum simply because of his commercial success in collaboration with a whole range of artists beyond the world of opera. With this our fabulous tour of the opera house and museum came to a delightful end.

Sambon, conocido anticuario italiano, sacó a subasta un prestigioso archivo de recuerdos relacionados con la célebre ópera. El precio de reserva de la subasta era de cuatrocientas cincuenta mil liras, una cantidad considerable en aquella época. La chamana

It had been a moon since the first rains had arrived and for the young woman, on this occasion, they seemed especially hard. It was as if all the colors had faded. The sky was a heavy gray, the sea roared dark and even the Great Lagoon seemed to lose its green tones to become turbulent browns. Gusts of cold air forced small animals to seek safe shelter, and very few birds ventured to take to the skies on those troubled days.

It was the first time since her grandmother had left her body that she had to carry out this search alone. The oracle had spoken and that day he must depart. As she murmured prayers of good omen, she painted her face so that the goddess would recognize her and grant her gifts. She put on a rabbit fur coat with a large hood, took her leather bag in which she carried an inherited canteen made of goat's bladder, some dried fruits, some utensils necessary for her purpose, and without ceasing to pray she set out on her journey before daylight.

Every now and then she stopped her protest and closed her eyes, she relived every movement and glance of her teacher to find the right place, she had to find the place from which she would honor, through the painted messages, the dead and the land that contained them... the same land to which now her beloved grandmother belonged.

From a very young age the old woman had taken her with her everywhere. The little girl gave off life wherever she went, her dexterity when running, her softness when touching the earth and her relationship with it, the ability with which she recognized the song of the birds or perceived the smells and, above all, the few but accurate words she pronounced during the forays they made. All this had made the grandmother see in her not just a child, but a being that was able to mimic any element that surrounded her, as if she merged with it, almost as if she became invisible.

The old sage saw at the moment of her granddaughter's birth the first sign. The little one did not cry, she only gave a long and deep cry as she came out of her mother's womb, as if announcing her arrival to all the sentient beings of the Great Lagoon. For a moment that never seemed to end, absolute silence reigned. She knew from that first shriek, that tiny being would be the next guardian of ancestral knowledge.

Mientras murmuraba oraciones de buen augurio, pintaba su rostro de manera que la diosa la reconociera y le concediera sus dones. Pertrechada con un abrigo de piel de conejo con una gran capucha, cogió su saca de cuero en la que portaba una cantimplora heredada hecha con vejiga de cabra, unos frutos secos, algunos utensilios necesarios para su propósito, y sin dejar de orar emprendió el camino antes que clareara el día.

Cada tanto detenía la marcha y cerraba los ojos, revivía cada movimiento y mirada de su maestra para dar con el lugar justo, debía hallar el sitio desde el cual se honraría, a través de los mensajes pintados, a los muertos y a la tierra que los contenía… la misma a la cual ahora su amada abuela pertenecía.

Desde muy corta edad la anciana la había llevado con ella a todas partes. La pequeña desprendía vida allí por donde iba, su destreza al correr, su suavidad al tocar la tierra y su relación con ella, la habilidad con la que reconocía el canto de las aves o percibía los olores y, sobre todo, las pocas, pero certeras palabras que pronunciaba durante las incursiones que realizaban. Todo esto había hecho que la abuela no viera en ella simplemente una niña, sino un ser que era capaz de mimetizarse con cualquier elemento que la rodeara, como si se fundiese con este, casi como si se volviese invisible.

La vieja sabia, vio en el momento del nacimiento de su nieta la primera señal. La pequeña no lloró, solo dio un grito largo y profundo al salir del vientre de su madre, como anunciando a todos los seres sintientes de la Gran Laguna su llegada. Por un momento que parecía no acabar nunca, reinó un silencio absoluto. Lo supo desde ese primer chillido,

Although she was no longer a child, the absence of her grandmother in the first moments of beginning the search, became distressing, but it was enough for her to breathe as she had learned to do, returning to her center, to that place where her grandmother and all the women before her now lived, to feel complete. There nothing was missing and nothing was superfluous.

She let herself be carried along by her feet, although now she did wear sandals for long walks, since she had acquired additional knowledge that exempted her from having to go barefoot. On this occasion, despite the inclement weather, she returned to her old habit of letting her skin feel the earth.

It was getting dark; she had been walking for hours alert for any sign. Without knowing how, he found himself in front of the mouth of a small circular-shaped cavity. She turned around with her back to the coat and found that she was at a height that made her lose her balance for moments. A vast landscape opened before her, an endless valley, great mountain ranges, the sea and, most importantly, she could see each of the sacred burial mounds where the bodies of her ancestors had been deposited. She felt in the wind the presence of a dear hand caressing her hair, her heart was beating strongly and at that very moment she knew that the search had come to an end.

Twelve years ago, we visited the Cueva del Sol for the first time, which, from the very first moment, awoke in us a particular interest for its paintings and the peculiar spatial location within the historical landscape. Due to different circumstances, everything remained in that great 'impression' that this small but enigmatic shelter had caused us.

A few months later, due to the beginning of my doctoral thesis, we returned again and this time we were definitively trapped. Thus began our wonderful experience with this shelter, since to our delight it would give us a fantastic gift: the discovery of a solar marker and the hypothesis of the more than possible relationship of this shelter with the funerary world.

Cueva del Sol is located in the Sierra de la Plata, in the municipality of Tarifa (Cadiz). It is a small shelter (4 m2) located in a very steep area of the mountain range. Its orientation and size make it practically invisible to the human eye from a distance.

Aunque ya no era una niña, la ausencia de su abuela en los primeros momentos de comenzar la búsqueda, se tornaron angustiantes, pero le bastó respirar como había aprendido a hacerlo, volviendo a su centro, a ese lugar donde habitaba ahora su abuela y todas las mujeres anteriores a ella, para sentirse completa. Allí nada faltaba y nada sobraba. Se dejaba llevar por sus pies, aunque ahora sí calzaba sandalias para las largas caminatas, ya que había adquirido otros conocimientos que la eximían de tener que ir descalza. En esta ocasión, a pesar de las inclemencias del tiempo, volvió a su antigua costumbre de que su piel sintiera la tierra.

Estaba oscureciendo, llevaba horas caminando alerta a cualquier señal. Sin saber cómo, se encontró delante de la boca de una pequeña cavidad de forma circular. Se volvió dando la espalda al abrigo y comprobó que se hallaba a una altura que la hizo perder por momentos el equilibrio. Ante ella se abría un vasto paisaje, un valle interminable, grandes sierras, el mar y lo más importante, se divisaban cada uno de los túmulos sagrados donde habían sido depositados los cuerpos de sus antepasados. Sintió en el viento la presencia de una mano querida acariciándole el cabello, su corazón latía con fuerza y en ese mismo instante supo que la búsqueda había llegado a su fin. Hace doce años visitamos por primera vez la Cueva del Sol, la cual, desde el primer momento, despertó en nosotros un interés particular por sus pinturas y la peculiar ubicación espacial dentro del paisaje histórico. Por diferentes circunstancias todo quedó en esa gran 'impresión' que nos había causado este pequeño pero enigmático abrigo.

Pocos meses después, a raíz del inicio de mi tesis doctoral, volvimos nuevamente y esta vez nos atrapó definitivamente. Comenzaba así nuestra maravillosa experiencia con este abrigo, ya que para nuestro deleite nos brindaría un fantástico regalo: el descubrimiento de un marcador solar y la hipótesis de la más que posible relación de este abrigo con el mundo funerario.

Cueva del Sol se localiza en la Sierra de la Plata, en el término municipal de Tarifa (Cádiz). Se trata de un abrigo de reducidas dimensiones (4 m2) que se encuentra en una zona muy escarpada de la sierra.

The shelter has impressive views, from its mouth dominates a depressed area of about 6 km wide and 5 km long that is comprised between the Sierra de la Plata and the Sierra del Retín. Likewise, a wide perspective of the coastal strip of the Atlantic Band of Cadiz can be seen.

The cavity has 13 painted and identified motifs and unidentified remains: a solar figure, a wheat plant, a human figure, a figure in the shape of a ladder, a cross, three figures of occulted idols and five of the so-called facial tattoos.

When entering the shelter, the first thing that we find in front of us is a large sun painted in the form of a radiated circle of 23 cm in diameter. The rays that depart from this circle are twelve. This figure is as-

El abrigo cuenta con unas impresionantes vistas, desde su boca se domina una zona deprimida de unos 6 km de ancho y 5 km de largo que está comprendida entre la Sierra de la Plata y la Sierra del Retín. Así mismo, se divisa una amplia perspectiva de la franja costera de la Banda Atlántica de Cádiz.

La cavidad cuenta con 13 motivos pintados e identificados y restos sin identificar: una figura solar, una planta de trigo, una figura humana, una figura con forma de escalera, una cruz, tres figuras de ídolos oculados y cinco de los denominados tatuajes faciales.

Al entrar en el abrigo lo primero que encontramos

they would perpetuate, through some kind of ritual, the cycles of nature and the resurrection itself in its broadest sense. By painting the sun, trapping it in its moment of rebirth, and also the ramiform (wheat plant) as an expression of the earth, of the regeneration of vegetation, they would ensure that this would never end. The idols would be in charge, with their protective effect, of keeping away that which could prevent the vital cycle from being fulfilled. But perhaps it is not only linked to the resurrection of the sun and the vital energy of the earth, but also to the resurrection of the dead. Just 300 m away from the shelter there is a megalithic necropolis, composed of numerous dolmens that we cannot fail to relate to the makers of these paintings and the shelter itself in particular.

We believe that the concept of the underworld, understood as the place where the souls of the deceased go, and present in many of the primitive cultures of the planet, is represented in these shelters, since their iconography (suns, facial tattoos, idols, etc.) related to the world of the dead among others, and the high frequency in the spatial linking of the

Five thousand years later, sitting at the mouth of the shelter, with my eyes lost in the wide horizon, I am thrilled that almost all the elements of the story of this young shaman have reached us. In my desire to feel her close, I think I perceive the hand in the wind that once caressed her hair, now caressing mine.

Healing is a branch away. Part 4.

Community farmers were the origin of the agricultural movement before it became the industrial behemoth it is today. Towns relied on locally grown produce to make it through the change in seasons, yet we seem to become more disconnected from our food every day. That is what makes this story so heartwarming.

The administration at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital heard that a group of community farmers were going to be displaced from their land. They approached these farmers and offered them a unique proposal, they could continue to farm, but on top of the hospital. This was a critical proposal in a country that imports more than 90% of its food.

Fast-forward and the rooftop farms have become another piece in this place of healing. The farm on top of the Specialist Outpatient Clinic Block now boasts over 100 species of fruit trees, and 100 species of vegetables and herbs. There are three routes for the organic produce that is grown. It is often distributed among the farmers who tend the gardens, it may be whisked away to the hospital kitchens and turned into delicious, nutritious meals for the patients, or it could be sold to raise funds to further maintain the farm.

Whatever the outcome, we should strive to reconnect with our land, soil and food in the way those of KTPH have.

Los agricultores comunitarios fueron el origen del movimiento agrícola antes de que se convirtiera en el monstruo industrial que es hoy. The Birds of Paradise (Strelitzia) are a group of five exotic-looking plants from Southern Africa, particularly South Africa.  Despite looking very tropical, all grow at least partly outside of the tropics and two are very popular garden plants in the Mediterranean.  A larger species with white flowers, the Giant White Bird of Paradise  Strelitzia nicolai, can grow into a very large, tree-like plant that somewhat resembles a banana plant and is often mistaken for this, although they are not closely related.  This is a common garden plant in Gibraltar.  However, the best-known species is the Bird of Paradise  Strelitzia reginae, a smaller shrub with distinctive and very beautiful orange flowers that is originally from coastal and eastern South Africa.  This plant's attractive flowers are pollinated by sunbirds, small nectar-feeding birds from Africa and Asia that can be said to be the Old World counterparts of hummingbirds.  When the sunbirds sit on the flowers of the Bird of Paradise to drink their nectar, the petals open to cover the birds’ feet in pollen.  The birds thus transfer pollen from one flower to another.  The flowers are sold by florists, often at a considerable price, and are very popular.

Ave del paraíso Strelitzia reginae

Las aves del paraíso (Strelitzia) son un grupo de cinco plantas de aspecto exótico originarias del sur de África, sobre todo de Sudáfrica. A pesar de su aspecto tropical, todas crecen al menos en parte fuera de los trópicos y dos de ellas son plantas de jardín muy populares en el Mediterráneo. Una especie más grande con flores blancas, la Strelitzia nicolai, puede crecer hasta convertirse en una planta muy grande, parecida a un árbol, que se asemeja a un plátano y con la que a menudo se confunde, aunque no están estrechamente relacionadas. Es una planta de jardín común en Gibraltar. Sin embargo, la especie más conocida es el ave del paraíso Strelitzia reginae, un arbusto más pequeño con flores anaranjadas distintivas y muy hermosas que es originario de la costa y el este de Sudáfrica. Las atractivas flores de esta planta son polinizadas por los pájaros del sol, pequeños pájaros de África y Asia que se alimentan de néctar y que se puede decir que son los homólogos del Viejo Mundo de los colibríes. Cuando los pájaros del sol se posan en las flores del ave del paraíso para beber su néctar, los pétalos se abren para cubrir de polen las patas de los pájaros. Las aves transfieren así el polen de una flor a otra. Las flores se venden en floristerías, a menudo a un precio considerable, y son muy populares.

ADVENTURE IN THE CAMINITO DEL REY VÍA FERRATA “EL CHORRO”

Our adventure takes place in one of the most beautiful places in Spain, “El Desfiladero de los Gaitanes”. An almost 200-metre-high gorge carved out of stone over millions of years by water erosion. We start in the village of “El Chorro”, which gives its name to this via ferrata.

A via ferrata is a vertical path equipped with grapples, lifelines, bridges... These via’s were created during the Second World War, by partisans trying to avoid the Nazis on the mountain roads.

The "El Chorro" via ferrata is considered Level 2. This indicates that you must have an acceptable level of physical fitness to be able to enjoy it.

All of the necessary technical equipment is included for the adventure: harness, helmet, fall arrester, short anchor line and pulley for the zip line.

La Vía Ferrata

The route begins with a small overhang or plunge, which will put us to the test. We then progress in a straightforward way and gain some height. We cross the first Tibetan bridge, with spectacular views of the El Chorro reservoir. After another vertical climb of about 15 metres, we will reach the almost 40 me-

tre length zip line: “spectacular”. After the zip line there is a small horizontal section that takes us to a viewpoint with the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes behind us. We still have another 50 vertical metres to traverse, crossing the last Tibetan bridge. From above, we will appreciate the height by picturing the below hikers as ants, almost 150 metres above them. A fast-paced, 3-hour adrenaline fuelled adventure.

Nuestra aventura se realiza en uno de los parajes más bellos de España, “El Desfiladero de los Gaitanes”. Una garganta de casi 200 metros de altura excavada en piedra durante millones de años por la erosión del agua. Comenzaremos en la aldea de “El Chorro”, que se da el nombre a esta vía ferrata.

Una vía ferrata es un camino vertical equipado en la parted con grapas, líneas de vída, puentes… Tiene su origen en la Segurda Guerra Mundial, cuando los partisanos trataban de esquivar a los nazis en los caminos de montaña.

La vía ferrata de “El Chorro”, está considerada de Nivel 2. Este nivel nos indica, que hay que tener una forma física aceptable para poder disfrutar de ella.

Para la aventura se dipondrá de todo el material técnico necesario: arnés, casco, disipador anticaída, vaga corta de anclaje y polea para la tirolina.

La Vía Ferrata.

La vía comienza con un pequeño extraplomo o desplome, que nos pondrá a prueba. Vamos progresando de forma sencilla y ganando altura. Atravesamos el primer puente tibetano, con unas vistas espectaculares del pantano de El Chorro. Tras otro largo vertical de unos 15 metros, llegaremos a la tirolina de casi 40 metros: “espectacular”. Tras la tirolina un

pequeño tramo horizontal que nos lleva a un mirador con el Desfiladero de los Gaitanes a nuestras espaldas. Nos queda todavía otros 50 metros verticales de vía, atravesando el último puente tibetano. Desde arriba, apreciaremos la altura visualizando los senderistas como hormigas, a casi 150 metros de altura sobre ellos. Una aventura trepidante de 3 horas de duración, para liberar adrenalina en cantidades industriales.

The reservoir and the village of Los Hurones was created in 1964, a hidden gem in the middle of nature, which supplies drinking water, electricity, and irrigation to the urban centers of the province of Cadiz. It might seem that we are in a Canadian place for the density of its forest or in a Galician village for its similarity in architecture, the houses that form this small village were used by employees and technicians who worked in the execution of this dam.

But we are in Cadiz, specifically the term of San Jose del Valle, near Algar and the towns of El Bosque and Ubrique.

We will make a route of about 10 kilometers with a low / medium difficulty, we will know the flora, fauna, and bathing place where it is impossible not to stop to take a picture because of its beauty, the Majaceite river can be seen in this area with a peculiar charm.

Arriving at the village we will also see the three institutions that are still preserved, hospital, school, and church dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar, we will cross the bridge, from which you can already see the impressive height of the dam, which collects almost 900 hectares with a capacity of 135 cubic hectometers that flows into the reservoir of Guadalcacín.

We will have lunch at Venta El Pantano, a place that persists over time thanks to the quality of its dishes and the attention of its employees, we can buy local products such as the famous village bread, molletes, sweets, olives and many more…

After lunch, we will go up to the dam to walk around it, see the grandeur of that territory and learn how it works.

From there and looking closely at the village it seems that the place resembles a traditional Christmas nativity scene because of the physiognomy of its houses and the environment.

You cannot miss the history behind this hidden paradise in the Natural Park Los Alcornocales.

El pantano y el poblado de Los Hurones se creó en el año 1964, una joya escondida en medio de la naturaleza, que abastece de agua potable, electricidad y riego a los núcleos urbanos de la provincia de Cádiz.

Podría parecer que nos encontramos en un paraje canadiense por la densidad de su bosque o en un pueblo gallego por su semejanza en la arquitectura, las casas que forman esta pequeña aldea fueron utilizadas por los empleados y técnicos que trabajaron en la ejecución de esta presa.

Pero estamos en Cádiz, concretamente el término de San José del Valle, próximo a Algar y a las poblaciones de El Bosque y Ubrique.

Realizaremos una ruta de unos 10 kilómetros con una dificultad baja/media, conoceremos la flora, fauna y lugar de baños donde es imposible no pararse a tomar una foto debido a su belleza, el rio Majaceite se deja ver en esta zona con un encanto peculiar.

Al llegar al poblado además veremos las tres instituciones que aún se conservan, hospital, colegio e iglesia dedicada a la Virgen del Pilar, cruzaremos el puente, desde el que ya se puede ver la impresionante altura de la presa, que recoge casi 900 hectáreas con una capacidad de 135 hectómetros cúbicos que desemboca en el embalse de Guadalcacín.

Haremos el almuerzo en la Venta El Pantano, un lugar que persiste en el tiempo gracias a la calidad de sus platos y la atención de sus empleados, podremos comprar productos de la tierra como el famoso pan de pueblo, molletes, dulces, aceitunas y un largo etc…

Tras la sobremesa, subiremos a la presa para pasear por ella, divisar la grandeza de aquel territorio y conocer el funcionamiento de esta.

Desde ahí y fijándote bien en el poblado pareciese que el lugar se asemeja por la fisionomía de sus casas y el entorno a un belén tradicional de Navidad No puedes perderte la historia que hay detrás de este paraíso escondido en pleno Parque Natural Los Alcornocales.

The Centennial Park, with an extension of 11 hectares has valuable elements of historical and cultural heritage of the city of Algeciras.

It is located within the boundaries of the "Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean Andalusia-Morocco" this reserve extends through some of the most emblematic territories of the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga in Spain and the provinces of Tangier, Tetuan, Larache and Chefchaouen in northern Morocco.

Of great importance, a part of the coastline is dominated by the flysch, a geological phenomenon created millions of years ago from the whims of an earth that decided to twist and play with the laws of physics in its own way, produced by the tectonic movements of the intercontinental plates.

A park where we can admire flora, wild olive, cork oak, Moorish gorse, jerguen, gall oak and its fauna, such as crustaceans Orchestia mediterranea and Tylos sardous, lizards, snake necklace, common bat, brown rat, sandpipers, terns and herons among others, as its location makes it an important place to observe the passage of migratory birds, as well as cetaceans, and a splendid view of the coast of the neighboring continent.

On the left side we are accompanied by the Chinarral which has fine sands and calm waters sheltered by a small inlet. The bottom of its waters is largely rocky highlighting several reefs a few meters

from the coast known as Las Hermanas, very dangerous for navigation, and to the right of the Getares inlet is the Getares beach whose sands, of fine thickness, come mainly from the contributions of the many seasonal streams that flow into the area and in particular the river Pícaro that formed in the past a marsh and a dune arrow.

For our route it is necessary to wear appropriate clothing for the terrain and the weather. We will start this trail by visiting the Interpretation Center of the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean "Strait of Gibraltar" at the entrance of the park.

At the edge of the coast we will find four viewpoints where we will take some pictures of the spectacular views, a few meters away, in the rest area, we will observe the flysch and listen to the explanation of how they were formed.

If we are lucky we will be able to observe some dolphins dancing in the waters of the Bay of Algeciras and enjoy some of their jumps.

Moving forward, we will go back in time visiting historical sites of the park such as the 16th century watchtower, ruins of the fort of San Garcia, machine gun nests and bunker.

Before continuing we will climb the iron lookout tower from where we can have a 360º view of the city and its surroundings.

We will finish the trail at the entrance of the park, where we can enjoy a refreshment or coffee in its facilities.

«Estrecho de Gibraltar»

El parque del Centenario, con una extensión de 11 hectáreas cuenta con valiosos elementos del patrimonio histórico y cultural de la ciudad de Algeciras.

Se encuentra dentro de los límites de la «Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental del Mediterráneo Andalucía-Marruecos» esta reserva se extiende por algunos de los territorios más emblemáticos de las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga, en España y de las provincias de Tánger, Tetuán, Larache y Chefchaouen en el Norte de Marruecos.

De gran importancia, una parte de la costa la protagonizan los flysch, un fenómeno geológico creado hace millones de años a partir de los caprichos de una tierra que decidió retorcerse y jugar con las leyes de la física a su manera, producida por los movimientos tectónicos de las placas intercontinentales.

Un parque en el que podremos admirar flora, acebuche, alcornoque, aulaga morisca, jerguen, quejigo y su fauna, como crustáceos Orchestia mediterránea y Tylos sardous, lagartijas, culebra de collar, murciélago común, rata parda, correlimos, charranes y garzas entre otras, ya que su situación hace que sea un lugar importante para la observación del paso de las aves migratorias, así como de los cetáceos, y una espléndida visión de la costa del continente vecino. Al lado izquierdo nos acompaña el Chinarral que posee arenas finas y aguas tranquilas al abrigo de una pequeña ensenada. El fondo de sus aguas es en gran parte rocoso destacando varios arrecifes a unos metros de la costa conocidos como Las Hermanas, muy peligrosos para la navegación, y a la derecha

de la ensenada de Getares se encuentra la playa de Getares cuyas arenas, de fino grosor, proceden principalmente de las aportaciones de los numerosos arroyos estacionales que desembocan en la zona y en particular del río Pícaro que formó en el pasado una marisma y una flecha dunar.

Para nuestra ruta es necesario llevar ropa adecuada al terrero y a la climatología, iniciaremos este sendero visitando en la entrada del parque el Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental del Mediterráneo «Estrecho de Gibraltar».

Al borde de la costa nos encontraremos con cuatros miradores donde tomaremos algunas fotos de las espectaculares vistas, a escasos metros, en el área de descanso, observaremos los flysch y escucharemos la explicación de cómo se formaron. Con suerte podremos observar algún delfín danzando en las aguas de la Bahía de Algeciras y obsequiarnos con algunas de sus saltos.

Adelantando nuestros pasos, retrocederemos en el tiempo visitando lugares históricos del parque como son la torre almenara del siglo XVI, ruinas del fuerte de San García, nidos de ametralladores y bunker.

Antes de continuar subiremos a la Torre mirador de hierro desde donde podremos tener una visión de 360º de la ciudad y su entorno.

Finalizaremos el sendero en la entrada del parque, donde podremos disfrutar de un refresco o café en sus instalaciones.

Forest Bath in Pinar del Rey

In the Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the Pinar del Rey is located between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera, in Cadiz.

Its origin dates back to 1800, this place was chosen to plant pine trees (Pinus Pinea) brought from Vejer de la Frontera, and thus obtain wood for the construction of ships.

It currently consists of a recreational area with a picnic area and barbecues, the Alhaja stream, the Nature Classroom and a botanical garden. In addition, there are two trails: El Cerro del Águila and Tajo del Pajarraco.

A peculiar place, with a mild climate, and a migratory bird route. Its environmental conditions make it a paradise for flora. We can even see some plants that only occur in northern Spain and the Canary Islands. We will walk through a mixed forest, with cork oaks, gall oaks, poplars, alders and ash trees, with a wide variety of botanical species, some of them endangered. In addition, of course we will discover its rich and varied fauna.

En el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, se ubica el Pinar del Rey entre los términos municipales de San Roque y Castellar de la Frontera, en Cádiz.

Su origen se remonta a 1800, este lugar fue elegido para plantar ejemplares de pinos piñoneros (Pinus Pinea) traídos desde Vejer de la Frontera, y obtener así madera para la construcción de navíos.

Actualmente consta de un área recreativa con una zona de picnic y barbacoas, el arroyo de Alhaja, el Aula de Naturaleza y un jardín botánico. Además, existen dos senderos: El Cerro del Águila y el Tajo del Pajarraco.

Un lugar peculiar, de clima suave, y paso de ruta de aves migratorias. Sus condiciones ambientales lo convierten en un paraíso para la flora. Incluso podemos ver algunas plantas que únicamente se dan en el norte de España y en las Islas Canarias. Recorreremos un bosque mixto, con alcornoques, quejigos, álamos, alisos y fresnos, con una extensa variedad de especies botánicas, algunas de ellas amenazadas. Y por supuesto descubriremos su rica y variada fauna.

Además, el Pinar del Rey, formó parte de un asentamiento arenoso de fondos marinos, con lo cual podremos encontrar fácilmente conchas y piezas marinas.

Para comenzar la actividad dejaremos el coche al final del aparcamiento de la zona recreativa del Pinar del Rey (San Roque), es importante llevar agua, protección solar, (opcional esterilla para suelo y cámara de fotos).

The treatment, cure, and care provided to deal with some evil or disease was known to the Greeks as therapeia. Our word “treatment” is derived from this. It is normal for someone to wonder how they will administer the forest to them if we add it. Will it be in pills, syrups, or serum? It doesn’t harm, so don’t worry. Even with all the humor, individuals who read us need to understand that we lead the individual to a total immersion in Nature, in some type of natural habitat, preferably woods.

Using the forest as therapy means that we will use the benefits provided by Nature as a way to intervene in people’s health. Not only in their physical health, but also in their mental and social health; even, for those who so wish, in their spiritual health. Each of these people has a specific need, or a specific health problem, or a personal difficulty. Taking into account these personal needs, we will try to find the most concise way to repair it, doing it in a structured way.

The approach of the Forest Baths is always therapeutic. The professionals who are dedicated to the Forest Baths are trained to be able to collaborate with guarantees with health professionals, making available to the general public, to the Institutions, all the set of interventions that we have.

What are we talking about then? We are talking about promoting healthy lifestyles, those that improve our quality of life. We are talking about relieving the day-to-day stress in which we live. We are also talking about preventing or dealing with burnout, that which is caused by work and production. Finally, we talk about more specific interventions on the health of any person, always under supervision.

Los griegos llamaban therapeia al remedio, al tratamiento, a los cuidados para hacer frente a algún mal, a alguna enfermedad. De ahí viene nuestra palabra terapia. Si le añadimos lo del bosque es normal que alguien pueda pensar, ¿cómo me van a dar el bosque?, ¿en pastillas, jarabes, lo tendrán en suero? No se preocupen, no duele. Bromas aparte, lo que tienen que saber los que nos lean es que llevamos a la persona a realizar una inmersión completa, mente y cuerpo, en la Naturaleza, en algún tipo de entorno natural, especialmente los bosques.

Usar el bosque como terapia significa que utilizaremos los beneficios que procuran la Naturaleza, como una forma de intervenir en la salud de las personas. No solo en su salud física, también en la mental y en la social; incluso, para los que así lo deseen, en la salud espiritual. Cada una de esas personas tiene una necesidad específica, o un problema de salud concreto, o alguna dificultad personal. Teniendo en cuenta estas necesidades personales trataremos de buscar la forma más concisa de repararlo, haciéndolo de manera estructurada.
