And just like a flick of a switch September is over… Insane how quickly it has flown by then you realize it’s not been speed of time but the insane number of things that have been done this month crammed into the same time and space……let’s talk Eco Festival.

The OTWO office is still buzzing by the incredible turnout and great atmosphere. It has truly been an extraordinary month of organization but so worth it to see how great it all turned out. Being our first major event there are always a few things one would like to tweak and improve on but, like everything good in life, it will definitely mature and grow. I am so enormously proud of our team for bringing this together and for working well above the call of duty to ensure the success that it has been.

Around 500 people turned up and checked out all the eco stalls we had available showcasing so many different options available to make our lives that bit more sustainable.

The biggest gratitude go to our main sponsors, their trust in us and support has been extraordinary. EVG, AMA Services, Metalrok/Eco Park, and Isola’s - we are so grateful!

A special mention must go to Steven Victory from the GSLA and Alain Gatt from the Department of Environment who have been supporting us right from the start. Thanks must also go to their respective departments for giving us the permission to hold the event in their location and providing us with lifeguards to have the swimming pool facilities. It was indeed a pool day that many families enjoyed. Gareth Latin from the GFA was so kind for donating all the astroturf used that helped us beautify the Europa Pool and turn into a lovely venue. Thank you all so very much.

This has most undoubtedly been one of the most

rewarding events OTWO has had the pleasure of organizing and it will certainly not be the last. We are happy to announce next year we will be hosting our Second Eco Festival in June; this will be a main event that will be in conjunction with Green Week Gibraltar. Watch this space for more information in the coming months.

In this month’s edition of OTWO we give a big warm welcome back to our Fair Traveler. After a little pause to focus on life’s most important task, motherhood, Aniara has blessed us with another incredible article based on her travels. A huge congratulations once again to this lovely family. You must enjoy her most interesting article with eye-catching imagery on page 72.

This month we introduce to you the Villero Suite. A new regular article from Javier Villero where he will share with us delicious, mouthwatering recipes and treats. Javier is a world-renowned chef, trained in Barcelona many years ago and currently working at Waterfront restaurant in Gibraltar. Javier, it is a total honour to have your column with us at OTWO, welcome to the team.

I must also make special mention of an interesting interview with Anthony Pitaluga. He shared his journey with us in past editions and shared his experience and memories with our Creative Director, a must read on page 46.

Anyways guys I’m off to rest up after the most hectic week but be sure to watch this space as next month we will bring you an Eco Festival special – the best bits of this event and what to look forward to for next year’s big shebang! Y como un golpe de suerte, septiembre ha terminado... Es una locura lo rápido que ha pasado, y entonces te das cuenta de que no ha sido la velocidad del tiempo, sino la cantidad insana de cosas que se han hecho este mes en el mismo tiempo y espacio: hablemos del Eco Festival.

La oficina de OTWO todavía está en ebullición por la increíble participación y el gran ambiente. Realmente ha sido un mes extraordinario de organización, pero ha merecido la pena al ver lo bien que ha salido todo. Al tratarse de nuestro primer gran evento, siempre hay algunas cosas que nos gustaría ajustar y mejorar, pero, como todo lo bueno en la vida, definitivamente madurará y crecerá. Estoy enormemente orgullosa de nuestro equipo por haber organizado esto y por haber trabajado muy por encima del deber para garantizar el éxito que ha tenido.

Alrededor de 500 personas acudieron a ver los puestos ecológicos que teníamos disponibles y que mostraban tantas opciones disponibles para hacer nuestras vidas un poco más sostenibles.

El mayor agradecimiento es para nuestros principales patrocinadores, su confianza y apoyo ha sido extraordinario. EVG, AMA Services, Metalrok/Eco Park e Isola’s, ¡estamos muy agradecidos!

Hay que hacer una mención especial a Steven Victory, del GSLA, y a Alain Gatt, del Departamento de Medio Ambiente, que nos han apoyado desde el principio. También hay que dar las gracias a sus respectivos departamentos por darnos el permiso para celebrar el evento en su ubicación y por proporcionarnos socorristas para disponer de las instalaciones de la piscina. Fue realmente un día de piscina del que disfrutaron muchas familias. Gareth Latin, de la GFA, fue muy amable por donar todo el césped utilizado que nos ayudó a embellecer la Piscina Europa y convertirla en un lugar precioso. Muchas gracias a todos.

Este ha sido, sin duda, uno de los eventos más gratificantes que OTWO ha tenido el placer de organizar y, sin duda, no será el último. Nos complace anunciar que el año que viene organizaremos nuestro Segundo Festival Ecológico en junio; será un evento principal que coincidirá con la Semana Verde de Gibraltar. Estate atento a este espacio para obtener más información en los próximos meses.

En la edición de este mes de OTWO damos una gran y cálida bienvenida a nuestra Viajante. Tras una pequeña pausa para centrarse en la tarea más importante de la vida, la maternidad, Ainara nos ha bendecido con otro increíble artículo basado en sus viajes. Una vez más, una enorme felicitación a esta encantadora familia. Tienes que disfrutar de su interesantísimo artículo con llamativas imágenes en la página 72.

Este mes te presentamos la Suite Villero. Una nueva sección de Javier Villero, en el que compartirá con nosotros deliciosas y apetitosas recetas. Javier es un chef de renombre mundial, formado en Barcelona hace muchos años y que actualmente trabaja en el restaurante Waterfront de Gibraltar. Javier, es un honor total tener tu columna con nosotros en OTWO, bienvenido al equipo.

También debo hacer una mención especial a una interesante entrevista con Anthony Pitaluga. Compartió su viaje con nosotros en ediciones pasadas y habló de su experiencia y recuerdos con nuestro Director Creativo, una lectura obligada en la página 46.

En cualquier caso, me voy a descansar después de una semana de lo más agitada, pero estad atentos a este espacio, ya que el mes que viene les traeremos un especial sobre el Eco Festival: lo mejor de este evento y lo que se puede esperar del próximo año. Va a ser inmenso.

HUNDREDS OF CITIZENS GATHERED IN MARIA CRISTINA PARK UNDER THE SLOGAN STOP ARBORICIDE

When asked about the controversial Maria Cristina Park in Algeciras, we met with Antonio Muoz Secilla of Verdemar Ecologists in Action. Here is what he said:

“The Algeciras residents have focused on demanding openness in this significant modification to the Maria Cristina Park. There is no broad support for this idea.

The protestors have erected hundreds of posters and flowers on their own and in groups of 19 persons. This area is listed as a Garden of Cultural

Interest of the Province of Cadiz in the Andalusian Historical Heritage Catalog.

We do not understand how Algeciras civil society has not been taken into account and the park is going to be substantially modified.

We are concerned with the comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization that is proposed, the traditional aspect of this enclave could be lost. That is why this union of neighbors is organizing to work in defense of the park.

Maria Cristina Park is one of the most popular places in the city. It has an area of 2.6 hectares and is registered in the Andalusian Historical Heritage Catalog, as a Garden of Cultural Interest of the Province. This park was built in 1834, on the land ceded by

Joaquín Bálsamo, a rich landowner to the city at the request of General Canterac in order to beautify the land adjacent to the barracks of the Fort of Santiago. The original design follows French garden patterns with straight, crisscrossing streets. At first the park was located outside the city, on the road to the cemetery, near there was the fair and later the bullring of La Perseverancia.

We do not want to continue the urban pressure as in the mid-twentieth century, when it was decided to expand the Avenida de las Fuerzas Armadas, skewing more than a third of the park. Not only was the avenue widened, but also several buildings were built, originally intended to be occupied by army and trade union commanders.

Hemos hablado con Antonio Muñoz Secilla de Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción sobre el candente tema del Parque María Cristina en Algeciras, y esto es lo que nos cuenta:

«Los ciudadanos de Algeciras se han concentrado pidiendo transparencia en este cambio sustancial del Parque María Cristina. Este proyecto adolece de un consenso popular.

De manera personal y en grupos de 19 personas, los manifestantes han colocado cientos de carteles y flores como protesta. Este espacio se encuentra inscrito en el Catálogo del Patrimonio Histórico An-

daluz, como Jardín de Interés Cultural de la Provincia de Cádiz.

No entendemos cómo no se ha tenido en cuenta a la sociedad civil algecireña y se vaya a modificar el parque de manera sustancial.

Estamos preocupados con la rehabilitación integral y modernización que se plantea, se podría perder el aspecto tradicional de este enclave. Es por lo esta unión de vecinos se está organizando para trabajar en defensa del Parque .

El parque María Cristina es uno de los lugares más populares de la ciudad. Tiene una extensión de 2,6 Has y se encuentra inscrito en el Catálogo del Patrimonio Histórico Andaluz, como Jardín de Interés Cultural de la Provincia.

Este parque fue construido en 1834, en los terrenos que cediera Joaquín Bálsamo, un rico terrateniente a la ciudad a petición del General Canterac con el fin de adecentar y embellecer los terrenos colindantes al cuartel del Fuerte de Santiago. El diseño original sigue los patrones de jardín francés con calles rectas entrecruzadas. En un principio el parque se encontraba fuera de la ciudad, en el camino del cementerio, cerca de allí estaba la feria y más tarde la plaza de toros de La Perseverancia. No queremos que siga la presión urbanística como la de los mediados del siglo XX, cuando se decide ampliar la Avenida de las Fuerzas Armadas, sesgando más de un tercio del parque. No sólo se amplía la avenida, sino que se construyen varios edificios destinados en un principio a ser ocupados por mandos de ejército y sindicatos».

CLEANING DAY FORTHE WORLD CLEANUP DAY ON THE BEACHES OF CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR

The Gran Sur shopping center in La Línea de la Concepción shows its solidarity with its environment by supporting the beach cleanup that took place last September 17th in La Línea de la Concepción.

Gran Sur wants to be part of one of the most important environmental movements of today: the World Cleanup Day. A day in which volunteers from more than 190 countries around the world join forces to clean up the planet.

The shopping centre wants to add its grain of sand to the cause. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with Alcaidesa Marina, the Diving Association of Campo de Gibraltar, KCG Kite Campo de Gibraltar paddle surf division Campo de Gibraltar, the Delegation of Environment and Fisheries and the Delegation of Beaches of the City Council of the municipality.

The total waste collected both on the beach and on the seabed was 7,000 cigarette butts and 125 ki-

lograms of garbage in La Línea de la Concepción and 260 in Algeciras.

In addition, this year we had the collaboration of the associations ASANSULL (Association Pro-People with Special Socio-Educational Needs and / or Dependents of Campo de Gibraltar) and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Campo de Gibraltar. One of the priorities was to involve all members of society in the initiatives of the mall, always with the principles of inclusiveness and solidarity for flag.

It was a real pleasure to have the presence and participation of all these entities and associations and volunteers to continue working together with them in the same direction: the protection of our planet.

A free commemorative T-shirt, bags, gloves and supplies for the cleaning tasks were provided to the more than 150 volunteers. As a novelty the initiative was extended to Algeciras where the components of the KCG Kite Group Campo de Gibraltar Algeciras, were responsible for cleaning coves and other inaccessible areas of its area of influence, more specifically in the Getares Beach, Punta San Garcia and Playa El Chinarral.

El centro comercial linense Gran Sur se solidariza con su entorno apoyando la limpieza de las playas que tuvo lugar el pasado 17 de septiembre en La Línea de la Concepción.

Gran Sur quiere formar parte de uno de los movimientos medioambientales más importantes de la actualidad: el World Cleanup Day. Una jornada en la que voluntarios y voluntarias de más de 190 países de todo el mundo aúnan fuerzas para limpiar el planeta.

El centro comercial quiere sumar su granito de arena a la causa. Esta iniciativa se lleva a cabo en colaboración con Alcaidesa Marina, la Asociación de Buceo del Campo de Gibraltar, KCG Kite Campo de Gibraltar división paddle surf Campo de Gibraltar, la Delegación de Medio Ambiente y Pesca y la Delegación de Playas del Ayuntamiento del municipio. Además, este año se contó con la colaboración de las asociaciones ASANSULL (Asociación Pro-Personas con Necesidades Socioeducativas Especiales y/o Dependientes del Campo de Gibraltar) y la Asociación de Esclerosis Múltiple del Campo de Gibraltar. Una de las prioridades era hacer partícipe a todos los miembros de la sociedad en las iniciativas del centro comercial, siempre con los principios de

inclusividad y solidaridad por bandera. Fue un auténtico placer contar con la presencia y participación de todas estas entidades y asociaciones y voluntarios para así seguir trabajando junto a ellas en una misma dirección: la de la protección de nuestro planeta. Una camiseta conmemorativa del evento de manera gratuita, bolsas, guantes y avituallamiento para realizar las tareas de limpieza se proporcionaron a los más de 150 voluntarios. Como novedad la iniciativa se extendió hasta Algeciras donde los componentes del Grupo KCG Kite Campo de Gibraltar de Algeciras, se encargaron de la limpieza de calas y otras zonas de difícil acceso de su área de influencia, más concretamente en la Playa de Getares, Punta San García y Playa El Chinarral.

GLOBAL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND AGAINST BAY POLLUTION

The Campo de Gibraltar social platforms organized a concentration on the Poniente beach in La Linea on September 23 under the banner, “World strike for the environment and against the pollution of the Bay.” The following points in a manifesto given by a member of Los Locos del Parque can be summed up: All seas and oceans, including the Strait of Gibraltar and the Bay, are severely polluted, primarily as a result of the discharge of gasoline, plastics, sewage, and CO2

This pollution comes not only from the different ships that cross the strait and those that stay in the bay, but also from the different ports located on both sides of the strait. The ports of Algeciras, Tarifa Tangier, Tangier Med, Ceuta and Gibraltar have mostly a great mercantile activity, traffic of oil, gas, bulk and various goods, large oil tankers and large container ships. These ports also have discharges into the sea, but the most important thing is the pollution they send into the air in the form of CO2, which in turn returns to the sea acidifying its waters.

The aforementioned cities also pollute the sea, in this case it is the discharges of poorly treated sewage.

The oil refinery and the industrial park also pollute the environment, despite the measures taken.

All this leads us to consider the problem as very

serious and to make an appeal to two important groups of people.

To ourselves, the citizens who have the joy of living around the Strait, to improve and change our civic attitude and behavior for the sake of a healthier and more sustainable Environment, and to put a stop to Climate Change.

And secondly, to the authorities of the affected areas so that in agreement with the different companies responsible for ships and industry, they take effective measures and modify laws if necessary, so that all marine traffic, ports, industries and cities pollute zero.

Huelga mundial por el clima y contra la contaminación de la bahía

El pasado 23 de Septiembre tuvo lugar una concentración en la playa de Poniente de La Línea, convocada por las diferentes plataformas sociales del Campo de Gibraltar con el lema: «Huelga mundial por el clima y contra la contaminación de la bahía». Un representante de Los locos del Parque leyó un manifiesto que se podría resumir en los siguientes puntos: el Estrecho de Gibraltar y la Bahía (en general todos los mares y océanos) están sufriendo una importante contaminación principalmente por vertidos de combustibles, plásticos, aguas residuales y CO2

Esta contaminación no solo viene de los diferentes barcos que cruzan el estrecho y de los  que se quedan en la bahía, sino que también provienen de los diferentes puertos situados a ambos lados del estrecho. Los puertos de Algeciras, Tarifa Tánger, Tánger Med, Ceuta y Gibraltar tienen en su mayoría una gran actividad mercantil, tráfico de petróleo, gas, graneles y mercancías varias, grandes petroleros y grandes portacontenedores. Estos puertos también tienen vertidos al mar, pero lo más importante es la contaminación que envían al aire en forma de co2, que a su vez vuelve al mar acidificando sus aguas.

Las ciudades antes mencionadas también contaminan el mar, en este caso son los vertidos propios de las aguas fecales mal depuradas.

La Refinería de petróleos y el Polígono Industrial también a pesar de las medidas contaminan el entorno.

Todo esto nos lleva a considerar el problema como muy grave y a hacer un llamamiento que va dirigido a dos grupos importantes de personas.

A nosotros mismos en primer lugar, a los ciudadanos que tenemos el gozo de vivir alrededor del Estrecho, para que mejoremos y cambiemos nuestra actitud y comportamiento cívicos en aras de un Medio Ambiente más saludable y sostenible, y para poner un freno al Cambio Climático.

En segundo lugar a las autoridades de las zonas afectadas para que de acuerdo con las diferentes empresas responsables de barcos e industria tomen medidas eficaces y modifiquen leyes si fuese necesario, para que todo el tráfico marino, puertos, industrias y ciudades contaminen cero.

Since 2015 we are very proud to say that Metalrok Ltd has been providing Gibraltar with a Recycling Service at the premises delivered by the government of Gibraltar Ecopark which is a joint public and private partnership located at 8 Flint Road. There has been an increase in Recycling but even so our daily waste stream contains goods which are perfectly suited to be reused not been recycled ending up in the landfill polluting the environment.

Together we can turn this around by reusing, preventing pollution, reducing usage of raw materials, sustaining the environment for future generations thus preventing them from ending in landfill and sea.

There is a need for these items in places like Senegal in West Africa were there are areas of extreme Poverty. with your cooperation we would like to meet their necessities by helping to provide them with donated unwanted items like:

All Clothing, Furniture inc Mirrors, Linen, household items, toys, office equipment, medical equipment electro domestics, bicycles, scooters, books. Car seats, doors windows, sinks, Showers, toilets.

We are collecting items that are still good for purpose and in usable condition in a bid to give them a new lease of life. Kindly take note that we will not make ourselves responsible for the collection of broken down items. The circumstances these people unfortunately live in deserve a sense of dignity and pride. Please only get in touch for items that will enhance and enrich their livelihoods.

The Uninhabitable Earth.

The book expands on a frightening article written by American journalist David Wallace Wells and published in New York Magazine in 2017. The article went viral due to its alarming warnings about the future that awaits our planet due to the climate crisis. The book delves further into the challenges our world will face in the coming decades. Warning: The Uninhabitable Earth is not for the faint-hearted; if you think you are worried now, this book will leave you filled with dread.

Looking at the spectrum of different temperature rise predictions and their possible outcomes; he paints a terrifying picture of the catastrophes future generations will be confronted with. According to Wallace-Well, extreme weather events, rising sea levels, extinctions, disease, famine, geopolitical conflicts and other catastrophes are all unavoidable, even if we intervene now. But we can limit how extreme these events are if we act now and limit warming.

Estamos hablando en definitiva del trazado de la figura helicoidal en la que actualmente se encuentra la conciencia ecológica. Este libro pretende iluminarnos en un autoconocimiento radical, oscureciendo las ideas preconcebidas y melancólicas que tenemos sobre el medioambiente hasta convertirlas en un juego sombrío. Morton ocupa la cátedra Rita Shea Guffey de lengua inglesa en la Rice University en Houston y ha escrito ensayos sobre filosofía, ecología, literatura, música, arte, arquitectura e incluso gastronomía.

The cultural conservation of nature.

The environmental authorities are detrimental to nature, that is how decisive is the moral of this minuscule

but great publication. In it he denounces the substitution of the regeneration processes of the countryside and the forest to recover the dialogue between culture and nature by a “policy of protection of the space that filled with officials and bio-critical nomenclature -biological and bureaucratic- the country of the peasants” according to the author’s words. He uncovers the state persecutions against the vernacular systems of peasant knowledge and proposes to overcome the conservationist theories written from the industrial vision. In little more than seventy pages he makes your head explode, blowing up everything you thought was a good administration for the environment and that suddenly appears to you as a bureaucratic and speculative monster to dismantle the rich and varied natural heritage.

Las autoridades medioambientales son perjudiciales para la naturaleza, así de determinante es la moraleja de esta minúscula pero grandiosa publicación. It tells us about the confrontation of Robert Bilott, a Cincinnati lawyer, against the multinational Dupont, one of the largest corporations in the chemical sector and with more than 64,000 employees worldwide. Illegal dumping, harmful and deadly effects among the locals where the industrial facilities are located, mafia-like financial and political power groups and inability and neglect of their duties by the Environmental Protection Agency, draw a bleak picture where citizens are defenseless and

The 26th annual Drap-Art International Festival of Sustainable

Art will run for over a month across various art spaces and galleries in the beautiful Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.

Locations such as Borsí, Villa del Arte Galleries and Plaza del Rey will host various urban artists, designers, activists and other multifaceted creators of all kinds.

Much of the art is made from recycled materials or artists use their medium to highlight and spread awareness of environmental issues or to criticize activities that harm nature and the environment.

Drap-Arts’ mission is to educate audiences, raise awareness and promote sustainability through art. “Given the increasingly urgent need to provoke a change towards a more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable world, Drap-Art once again upholds art as a tool for social transformation.”

Human Being

Risky but brave exhibition proposal that proposes “Being Human” immersing us in depths full of fears, questions, but also hopes. Showing us fifty works of art, it makes us question the latest advances in medicine or the relationships between us, the others and the world. It is divided into four thematic units: Genetics, Mind and Body, Infection and Environmental Breakdown. It is worth mentioning a bronze sculpture that smells like mother’s milk, listening to an epidemic jukebox, watching how a fast food store floods in slow motion or seeing -not without a certain sadness- the figure of an astronaut loaded with his belongings to take them to an unknown place. This is a permanent and free proposal.

Ser Humano

Arriesgada pero valiente propuesta expositiva la que nos propone «Ser Humano» sumergiéndonos en unas profundidades llenas de miedos, interrogantes pero también de esperanzas. Mostrándonos cincuentas obras de arte consigue que nos cuestionemos los últimos avances en medicina o las relaciones entre nosotros, los otros y el mundo. Se articula en cuatro unidades temáticas: Genética, Mente y Cuerpo, Infección y Desglose ambiental. Cabe destacar una escultura de bronce que huele a leche materna, escuchar una máquina de discos epidémica, comprobar como se inunda a cámara lenta una tienda de comida rápida o ver —no sin una cierta tristeza— la figura de un astronauta cargado con sus pertenencias para llevarlas a un lugar desconocido. Se trata de una propuesta permanente y gratis.

Colisión en el Estrecho

On the 29th of August 2022, Bulk Carrier OS 35 clipped the LNG tanker Adam LNG as it was manoeuvring to leave the Bay, causing significant damage to the starboard side of the former. The Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA) directed the ship to the east side of the Rock to avoid sinking, beaching it on the seabed 700m from Catalan Bay. The Adam LNG suffered just superficial damage.

OS 35 was carrying a cargo of steel rebars and was also loaded with 183 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, 250 tonnes of diesel and 27 tonnes of lube oil and was leaving Gibraltar to head to Vlissengen in the Netherlands.

The GPA began close coordination with the Port of Algeciras, and tugs were deployed. Initial inspections of the damage found a gash amidship below the waterline measuring 10m x 4m. A team of Dutch specialists arrived in Gibraltar within 24 hours to complete a full assessment and port operations were halted.

Thankfully none of the 24 crew was injured in the collision, initially opting to stay on board the bulk carrier with the captain.

Evidence from the initial investigation into the cause of the collision indicated the Port’s Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) had warned the moving ship to change course.

At first, refloating the vessel was thought possible, and plans began to remove the fuel to assist in the operation. But two days after the collision, a major incident was declared as the hull broke. The

El OS 35 transportaba un cargamento de barras de acero y también estaba cargado con 183 toneladas de fueloil pesado, 250 toneladas de gasóleo y 27 toneladas de aceite lubricante, y salía de Gibraltar para dirigirse a Vlissengen, en Holanda.

El GPA inició una estrecha coordinación con el Puerto de Algeciras, y se desplegaron remolcadores. Las primeras inspecciones de los daños descubrieron un corte en el centro del barco, por debajo de la línea de flotación, de 10 m x 4 m. Un equipo de especialistas holandeses llegó a Gibraltar en 24 horas para completar una evaluación completa y se interrumpieron las operaciones portuarias.

Afortunadamente, ninguno de los 24 tripulantes resultó herido en la colisión, ya que inicialmente optaron por permanecer a bordo del granelero con el capitán.

Las pruebas de la investigación inicial sobre la causa de la colisión indicaban que los Servicios de Tráfico de Buques (VTS) del puerto habían avisado al buque en movimiento para que cambiara de rumbo.

Over the subsequent days, multiple oil leaks from the vessel were reported, including hydraulic fluid from the vessel’s forward crane, lube oil from the ship’s valves when the hull of the bulk carrier broke and heavy fuel from two tank vents. Much of the leaked fuel was contained within quickly deployed booms, but inevitably, some of the slicks made their way into the Bay and onto El Poniente Beach in La Linea.

Sea and absorbent booms were deployed, repositioned and changed on multiple occasions to contain the spill as much as possible, both around the vessel and to protect our coastline around Catalan Bay and other beaches. Skimmers were also continuously used to collect as much released oil as possible.

The fuel onboard, including diesel, lube oil, low sulphur fuel oil and fuel contained within two of the ship’s tanks have been emptied since the incident occurred. But due to the difficult task of removing all residual pollutants and the broken hull, seepage was inevitable.

Drones and infrared were used throughout to monitor the incident. Salvamento Maritimo and the Port of Algeciras have also worked closely with the GPA by monitoring the surrounding area using helicopters and assisting with salvage and containment operations. OSRL (Oil Spill Response Ltd) were also called upon to help monitor and survey the coastline.

By the 1st of September, sheening began to

Following reports of oil spotted at Little Bay and Rosia Bay, home to various endangered and protected species, further booms were deployed to protect the shoreline and the salt water intake for the desalination plant.

The Department for the Environment coordinated with ESG, GONHS and the Nautilus Project to quickly engage in clean-up operations. The public was asked to report any wildlife in distress and volunteers were also asked to come forward to assist with the cleanup and rehabilitation of oiled seabirds.

The Nautilus Project (TNP), together with volunteers, began monitoring the coastline from day one, deploying two boats to survey the whole coastal region and inside the Bay and identified several Yellow-Legged Seagulls in distress.

They also called for the public to donate old towels and toothbrushes to assist in all necessary clean-up operations, receiving an overwhelming response.

On the 2nd of September, TNP conducted a snorkel survey on the inside of the southern revetment at Sandy Bay and sadly encountered some recently deceased invertebrates along the rocks due to distress from the oil slick, particularly a small number of limpets. The Ribbed Mediterranean Limpet (Patella ferruginea) is the most endangered endemic marine invertebrate on Western Mediterranean coasts and is listed as protected under the Gibraltar Nature Protection Act 1991-11.

ESG warned that the full scale of the damage would not be known for some time but praised the Governments transparency and sharing of detailed information throughout. However, ESG called for more to be done to safeguard Gibraltar’s coastline and water intake and for the resources available in Gibraltar to deal with such incidents to be proportionate to the increasing level of traffic in the Strait.

They also called for more stringent regulations for double-hulled ships and better shipping standards.

On the 14th of September, the Master of OS 35 was charged with several offences, including endangering ships, structures and individuals, failing to take appropriate action to avoid collision and endangering protected species.

Salvage and fuel containment operations are still ongoing. As of writing, an operation to lower the aft end of OS 35 to ensure the vessel is securely positioned on the seabed was completed successfully. This was to ensure future recovery operations go well and to withstand possible adverse weather conditions. Shoreline assessments by the Department of Environment and local NGOs are also ongoing.

Esto se hizo para garantizar que las futuras operaciones de recuperación vayan bien y para soportar posibles condiciones meteorológicas adversas. También están en curso las evaluaciones de la costa realizadas por el Departamento de Medio Ambiente y las ONG locales.

Life might surprise you, as Rubén Blades sings in his song. The news that new species of crabs, spiders, and coleoptera have been described in the province of Cádiz is already making the rounds. And in actuality, Cadiz provides for all of that and more because of its convoluted terrain, varied geology, and variety of landscapes. You’ll just have to wait to see it if not.

In May, in the middle of a training activity of the College of Environmentalists of Andalusia and working with the team of Atlántida Medio Ambiente, life wanted to give me a surprise.

I was on the beach of Sobrevela in La Línea de la Concepción. I was accompanied by members of the local beach cleaning team and my colleague Nazareth Cortés Frasquier. After seeing some curiosities of

Y es que, como nos dice la canción de Rubén Blades, la vida te da sorpresas. Ya suena por ahí la noticia de la descripción de nuevas especies de cangrejos, arañas y coleópteros en la provincia de Cádiz. Y es que Cádiz, debido a lo intrincado de su geografía, su geología tan compleja y su diversidad de paisajes, da para eso y para más. Y si no solo hay que esperar para verlo.

En el mes de mayo, en pleno desarrollo de una actividad formativa del Colegio de Ambientólogos de Andalucía y trabajando con el equipo de Atlántida Medio Ambiente, la vida quiso darme una sorpresa. Me encontraba en la playa de Sobrevela en la Línea de la Concepción. Me acompañaban los miembros del equipo de limpieza de playas de la localidad

the intertidal zone, we went into the dune sands to learn about some of its plant species. We stopped to contemplate the beauty of the small Linaria pedunculata, to be surprised by the dispersal strategies of the fruits of Pseudorlaya pumila or to identify some of the invasive exotic species that threaten the ecological balance of these sands.

In that coming and going, my sight stopped on a small plant that I did not recognize: small, very branched from the base, with reddish leaves and wavy edge, somewhat hairy and with beautiful bluish flowers. In the field I tried a first identification, but in my absolute ignorance I decided to take a sample with the intention of identifying it at home with more resources at my disposal.

The work was not easy and, in fact, once I concluded which species it was, my uncertainty was not only not reduced, but increased. According to the bibliography, it was Jasione corymbosa Poir. ex Schult.

y mi compañera Nazareth Cortés Frasquier. Tras ver algunas curiosidades de la zona intermareal, nos introdujimos en las arenas dunares para conocer algunas de sus especies vegetales. Nos detuvimos a contemplar la belleza de la pequeña Linaria pedunculata, a sorprendernos con las estrategias de dispersión de los frutos de Pseudorlaya pumila o a identificar algunas de las especies exóticas invasoras que amenazan el equilibrio ecológico de estos arenales.

En ese ir y venir, mi vista se paró en una pequeña planta que no reconocí: pequeña, muy ramificada desde la base, con hojas de tonalidad rojiza y de borde ondulado, algo peludas y con unas bonitas flores de color azulado. Sobre el terreno intenté una primera identificación, pero ante mi más absoluta ignorancia decidí tomar una muestra con la intención de identificarla en casa con más recursos a mi disposición.

the only Iberian population was located on the coast of Malaga.

Fortunately, I got my hands on an article by the botanists who discovered the Malaga population and there I saw the light, since among the authors was Antonio Rivas Rangel, an old friend and a great professional in the botanical world.

Together with Antonio Rivas, conservation technician of El Castillejo Botanical Garden, and Francisco Borja Rodríguez Martín, conservation technician of El Aljibe Botanical Garden, I returned again to Sobrevela to assess the species and the existing population in the field. We collected some more samples and from that moment Antonio started an in-depth identification process that has led to the conclusion that it is indeed Jasione corymbosa Poir. ex Schult. Therefore, we can now add this species to the Cadiz flora. The next steps will be directed to better recognize the characteristics of this population and work to ensure its conservation.

It is very pleasant that life gives you these surprises that, as surprises that they are, they always occur iunsuspected places and at unsuspected times.

El trabajo no fue fácil y, de hecho, una vez concluí qué especie era mi incertidumbre no solo no se redujo, sino que aumentó. Según me aparecía en la bibliografía, se trataba de Jasione corymbosa Poir. ex Schult., pero la única población ibérica se localizaba en la costa de Málaga.

Afortunadamente llegó a mis manos un artículo de los botánicos que descubrieron la población malagueña y ahí vi la luz, ya que entre los autores se encontraba Antonio Rivas Rangel, un viejo amigo y un gran profesional del mundo botánico. Junto con Antonio Rivas, técnico de conservación del Jardín Botánico El Castillejo, y con Francisco Borja Rodríguez Martín, técnico de conservación del Jardín Botánico El Aljibe, volví de nuevo a Sobrevela a valorar sobre el terreno la especie y la población existente. Recogimos algunas muestras más y desde ese momento Antonio inició un proceso de identificación en profundidad que ha llevado a concluir que efectivamente se trata de Jasione corymbosa Poir. ex Schult.

Por tanto, ya podemos añadir esta especie a la flora gaditana. Los siguientes pasos estarán encaminados a reconocer mejor las características de esta población y trabajar para asegurar su conservación. Resulta muy grato que la vida te dé estas sorpresas que, como sorpresas que son, ocurren siempre en lugares y momentos insospechados.

Multifunctional plants or PlanS, as their name suggests, are those that have more than one function. If I name Valerian, for example, its use to combat insomnia or certain cases of anxiety will surely come to mind.

But if I name Vinaigrette or Nettle, or Borage, surely you do not know what they are for, since they have always been considered as “weeds”. Although it is possible that this “weed” takes you back to your childhood memories: tasting the vinegar-flavored stalk or the hives produced by putting your hands in places you shouldn’t have.

Let me surprise you with PLANS:

- They are easy to grow, even if they are wild. They are the least demanding and give us the most.

- They are edible.

- If you have a garden with plants or vegetables, they will support your crops.

- They are medicinal plants.

- We can use them cosmetically.

- They help us as natural insecticides.

- They have had magical uses since ancient times.

Las plantas multifuncionales o PlanS, como su nombre indica, son aquellas que tienen más de una función. Si te nombro la Valeriana, por ejemplo, seguro que viene a tu cabeza su uso para combatir el insomnio o ciertos casos de ansiedad.

Pero si te nombro la Vinagreta o la Ortiga o la Borraja seguro que no sepas para qué sirven puesto que siempre han sido consideradas como «malas hierbas». Aunque es posible que esa «maleza» te lleve a recuerdos de tu niñez: probando el tallo con sabor a vinagre o la urticaria producida por poner las manos en lugares que no debías.

La ortiga conocida como mala hierba que relacionamos con fuertes picores debido al acido de sus hojas es una planta que se viene usando desde la antigüedad:

Would you like a nettle omelet?

Ingredients:

- 400g of nettles (only the leaves, the best time to collect them is when they are in flower after the summer. Use gloves).

- 5 eggs.

- 40g olive oil.

- 40g (optional) Parmesan cheese to grate.

- A pinch of salt.

- Black pepper (optional).

Preparation:

With the help of gloves wash the nettle leaves well and drain in a colander, boil some water in a saucepan, add salt and cook the nettle leaves for about 7 minutes. When they have softened and reached a more intense color, they will be ready. Drain in the colander and, with the back of a fork, push the cooked leaves to release all the liquid absorbed during cooking. Set aside.

Beat the eggs with the salt, pepper and cheese, and prepare a frying pan with the olive oil. When it reaches the right temperature, sauté the nettles and cook for one minute, add the eggs and cook for about 8 minutes over low heat and with the pan covered. Turn over with the help of the lid and perform the same operation, but this time only 4 minutes. Remove and serve on a plate, it is ready!

¿Te apetece una tortilla de ortigas?

Ingredientes:

- 400 g de ortigas (solo las hojas, el mejor momento es cuando se encuentran en flor después del verano, realizar la recolecta con guantes).

- 5 Huevos.

- 40 g de aceite de oliva.

- 40 g queso parmiesano para rallar (opcional).

- Una pizca de sal.

- Pimienta negra (opcional).

Preparación:

Con la ayuda de los guantes lavar bien las hojas de ortigas y escurrir en un colador, hierve un poco de agua en una cacerola, agrega sal y cocina las hojas de ortiga durante unos 7 minutos aproximadamente cuando se hayan suavizado y hayan alcanzado un color más intenso estarán listas, escurrir en el colador y, con el dorso de un tenedor, empujar las hojas cocidas para que suelte todo el líquido absorbido durante la cocción y reservar.

Bate los huevos con la sal, pimienta y queso, y prepara una sartén con el aceite de oliva, cuando alcance temperatura saltee las ortigas un minuto y agregue los huevos uniformando todo, dejar cocer unos 8 minutos a fuego lento y tapado, voltear con la ayuda de la tapadera y realizar la misma operación, pero esta vez solo 4 minutos.

Fernando Pessoa wrote that tremendous phrase that says “The best way to travel is to feel”. But we agree that the culmination of this concept would be to feel while traveling. So, I ask you, what have you felt on this trip?

What I saw, heard, and subsequently wrote, changed me.

At the start of this trip, I had a tendency to dismiss some of the myths and tales associated with the locations we planned to see as exaggerations or just plain tourist traps. But after we got to the real Merida, which I’m just using here as a placeholder for the other places we went, I started to have a more deliberate thinking.

The overexposed photographs of monuments, clear skies and majestic landscapes found on tourist websites always give me a sense of skepticism and uncertainty. However, as I immersed myself and came into physical contact with the elements and monuments in situ, I felt a primordial innocence and optimism that would stay with me for the rest of the trip. A childlike feeling in the face of the great adventure that remained to be realized.

Fernando Pessoa escribió aquella frase tan tremenda que dice «La mejor manera de viajar es sentir». Pero estaremos de acuerdo que el culmen de este concepto sería sentir viajando. Por lo tanto te pregunto ¿qué has sentido en este viaje?

Al comienzo de este viaje, me inclinaba a entender algunas leyendas e historias de los lugares que pretendíamos visitar como exageraciones y alguna que otra locura, ganchos turísticos. Pero al llegar a la Mérida real —lugar que uso aquí como mera referencia de los otros sitios que visitamos—, llegué a tener una idea más pensativa.

Las fotografías sobreexpuestas de monumentos, cielos despejados y paisajes majestuosos que se encuentran en las webs turísticas siempre me dan una sensación de escepticismo e incertidumbre.

Siempre me parece que estaré bien, o incluso mejor, donde no estoy. En términos puramente empíricos esta afirmación es totalmente ilógica, puesto que conocemos adónde nos encontramos, pero en muchas ocasiones desconocemos adónde vamos. Considering travel in terms of flight from danger, then, if movement without attraction can be possible if we exclude an attraction to a less dangerous place. Las necesidades y motivaciones de hacer turismo dependen del estado de ánimo de cada individuo, su posición dentro de la sociedad y el entorno social que le rodea. Muchos viajeros ávidos afirman que hacen turismo para alejarse o huir de su triste o feliz realidad. Los turistas se adentran en mundos nuevos, otros mundos, en el mundo del “otro”, para inconscientemente “descubrirse” a sí mismos a través de nuevas experiencias.

Por lo tanto, digo que de algún modo se podría entender que el hacer turismo se asemeja a la huida con estilo, que a su vez lleva connotaciones de deseo o comportamiento que trata de ignorar, evadir o evitar la realidad. Escapismo.

Simplemente se huye de problemas subyacentes que no se quiere abordar, dentro de mundos ilusionarnos que inducen a comportamientos que serían imposibles dentro del entorno de nuestra realidad cotidiana familiar.

¿Consideras que la experiencia de viajar cambia dependiendo de si vas sólo o acompañado?

Definitivamente, la experiencia de viajar cambia dependiendo de si vas sólo o acompañado. Todo viaje adquiere formas diferentes. A veces solo con total libertad y flexibilidad, y otras veces el viaje se convierte en una experiencia de unión única con familia o amigos. Ambos tipos de viajes tienen sus desafíos y ventajas particulares.

Tengo poca experiencia de viajes en solitario aparte de los viajes relacionados con el trabajo. Por lo tanto, no puedo más que aportar una opinión extrapolada a raíz de mis experiencias de viajes acompañados.

Se dice que viajar en solitario puede proporcionar experiencias maravillosas. Un tiempo que permite conectar con la naturaleza, con nuevas culturas y uno mismo. Además, el tiempo a solas puede brindar un descanso vital del estrés social de la vida cotidiana, especialmente si se está rodeado de personas la mayor parte del tiempo.

It is said that solo travel can provide wonderful experiences. A time to connect with nature, with new cultures and with oneself. Also, time alone can provide a vital break from the social stresses of everyday life, especially if you are surrounded by people most of the time.

For me the most important thing about experiencing new and pleasurable experiences provided by travel is simply being able to share them in the moment. Especially sharing these experiences with loved ones.

Everything that can be achieved by traveling alone can also be achieved by traveling accompanied, but without the added advantage of being able to share the moments intimately. However, one might be surprised at the power of a grumpy person to destroy the beneficial effects of a good hotel or scenery.

Clearly the preference of traveling alone or accompanied depends on the traveler, his or her personality and mood.

And what was the process of working on these memorable deliveries? Did you write them as you traveled? Did you take notes as you went along?

One of the requirements of my daily work is to conduct historical research and then write about it. My professional work process has an established, preconceived methodology. That is: thesis or research problem statement, data collection and analysis, and final writings.

Although this writing approach works well for me while working in my home studio, it was clear that I would have to adapt this methodology while traveling. So, I did, and in the following manner: Back at the hotel, once the day’s stage was completed, using pencil and paper, I would write some long notes compiled using short notes of the moment, photos and video clips, and some memory of what had transpired that day. To these prelimi-

Claramente la preferencia de viajar a solas o acompañadas depende del viajero, su personalidad y estado de ánimo.

¿Y cuál ha sido el proceso de trabajo en estas memorables entregas?¿Las escribiste mientras viajabas? ¿Tomabas apuntes según el momento?

Uno de los requisitos de mi trabajo diario es llevar a cabo investigaciones históricas y posteriormente escribir al respecto. Mi proceso de trabajo profesional lleva una metodología establecida, preconcebida. Es decir: declaración de la tesis o problema de investigación, recopilación y análisis de datos, y escritos finales.

A pesar de que este enfoque de escritura funciona bien para mí mientras trabajo en mi estudio en casa, era evidente que tendría que adaptar esta metodología mientras viajaba. Así lo hice, y de la siguiente manera: Ya en el hotel, una vez completada la etapa del día, usando lápiz y papel, escribía unas notas largas compiladas usando apuntes cortos del momento, fotos y videos clips, y algo de memoria de lo que había transcurrido aquel día. A estas notas largas preliminares le añadí unos dibujitos en forma de mapas —ruta del trayecto, y otras cosas abstractas variadas — doodles. También recogí estadísticas del uso de mascarillas anti-COVID en las distintas comunidades autonómicas. Estas estadísticas no se incluyeron en los reportajes que se publicaron. La fase recopilación y análisis de datos, y los posteriores escritos finales los realice en uno de mis lugares favoritos del universo observable: mi estudio en casa. Aquí pase unas veladas de invierno inolvidables escribiendo, recordando y recreando al viajero, el viaje y el otro sitio. Todo gracias a la increíble OTWO que me presentó la oportunidad. The data collection and analysis phase, and the subsequent final write-ups were done in one of my favorite places in the observable universe - my home studio. Here I spent some unforgettable winter evenings writing, remembering and recreating the traveler, the journey and the other place. Inspired by Ptolemy’s erroneous geocentric model, which placed the Earth at the center of the universe, I have placed Gibraltar at the center of Europe. Sí habrá continuidad de esta atractiva propuesta. Los trayectos Gibraltar a Burdeos se reunirán en un sólo volumen. Este incluirá más imágenes y más texto, que no se pudieron incorporar en la versión revista. El volumen Gibraltar a Burdeos, formará parte, y será la primera entrega, de una serie de cinco. Inspirándome en el modelo geocéntrico erróneo de Ptolomeo, que situaba la Tierra en el centro del universo, yo he situado a Gibraltar en el centro de Europa. Además, he convertido mi coche en una nave especial, tiempo-espacial penetradora. Posteriormente trabajaré con estas ilusiones como telón de fondo de los viajes. Simplemente son una secuencia de diarios de viaje ilustrados, sobre lugares que visitamos. Unos monólogos de nuestras experiencias en el camino. Todavía no se me ocurre ningún título para la serie.

Creo que la revista OTWO sobresale en muchos sentidos. Pero me gustaría resaltar uno de esos sentidos: el que OTWO es bilingüe, se publica en un mismo volumen, simultáneamente en inglés y español. Estos lenguajes, se entiende, son de los más universales y ricos de nuestro planeta, y al mismo tiempo son bastiones centrales de las culturas gibraltareñas y campo- gibraltareñas.

Being a bilingual magazine gives OTWO more possibilities to connect with a much wider and more diverse audience than other single-language publications can. The fact that both languages are printed side by side gives the reader an important linguistic educational component.

In another sense it is clear that OTWO knows its readers inside and out. This brings personality to the magazine. I think OTWO stands out in the way it blends experiences and content, all incorporated through a design that results in a very pleasing, effective and relevant aesthetic. High quality design that brings important editorial pedigree. A visual aesthetic that I don’t believe has no correspondence to the old absurd adage that declares that content trumps design every time. ....

It’s also very interesting the way OTWO manages to keep the editorial experience fresh, but at the same time familiar. There’s a lot more I could say about OTWO... Perhaps, and just thinking out loud, one could experiment with encouraging collaboration between writers and designers from different disciplines who don’t know each other, a bit Bauhaus-like.

En otro sentido está claro que OTWO conoce a sus lectores por dentro y por fuera. Lo cual le aporta personalidad a la revista. Creo que OTWO se destaca en la manera que mezcla las experiencias y el contenido, todo incorporando a través de un diseño que da resultado a una estética muy placentera, efectiva y relevante. Diseño de alta calidad que aporta importante linaje (pedigrí) editorial. Una estética visual que no creo que no tenga ninguna correspondencia con el viejo adagio absurdo que declara que el contenido triunfa sobre el diseño siempre. ...

También es muy interesante de la manera que OTWO logra mantener la experiencia editorial fresca, pero al mismo tiempo familiar. Hay mucho más que podría decir sobre OTWO… Quizás y solo pensando en voz alta, se podría experimentar  fomentando la colaboración entre escritores y diseñadores de diferentes disciplinas que no se conocen entre sí, un poco a lo Bauhaus.

The X edition of the Andalusian Congress of Environmental Sciences, COANCIAM, will be held by the College of Graduates in Environmental Sciences of Andalusia (COAMBA) in November of next year with the topic “Fifth Industrial Revolution: sustainability. New difficulties and chances for a paradigm shift “.

The meeting will specifically take place in Seville, at the NH Collection Hotel, on November 3 and 4, 2022, and it will compare experiences and discuss opinions on interesting issues, with the best subject-matter experts and the most comprehensive and up-to-date information.

Before continuing with the development of the activities and explaining more about the event, it is interesting to know a little more about COAMBA.

El próximo mes de noviembre, el Colegio de Licenciados y Graduados en Ciencias Ambientales de Andalucía, COAMBA, celebrará la X edición del Congreso Andaluz de Ciencias Ambientales, COANCIAM, bajo el lema «La sostenibilidad: quinta revolución industrial. Nuevos desafíos y oportunidades para un cambio de paradigma».

Concretamente, el encuentro se celebrará en Sevilla, en el Hotel NH Collection los días 3 y 4 de noviembre de 2022 y en él se contrastarán experiencias e intercambiarán opiniones sobre temas de interés, contando con las mejores personas expertas en la materia y la información más global y actualizada.

Antes de continuar con el desarrollo de las actividades y explicar más sobre el evento, es interesante conocer un algo más sobre COAMBA.

The lake is large, so large that Fair Traveler loses sight of the land while crossing and the moderate surf leads him to believe the journey is by sea when it is not. This magnificent natural water reservoir is located 3,800 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountain range. The world’s highest navigable lake is thought to be Titicaca. It receives water from five rivers, but only one drains it, therefore a lot of it evaporates away, leaving a lake that is slightly brackish. But Fair Traveler quickly realizes how fitting it is that all of Titicaca’s salt is housed in a little jar that is shaped like a young woman wearing vibrant clothing.Reina Silvana Lujano Coira flows with ease among the boats of visitors who want to know the floating islands where she lives with her community.

El lago es grande, tan grande que durante la travesía Viajante pierde de vista la orilla y el suave oleaje le da para pensar que el trayecto es por mar; pero no es mar. The young Uros have found a solution to adapt their community to the growing tourist demand and maintain, in a way, their customs. Sebastian, a part-time boatman who combines it with his studies at the university, tells that his people are considered one of the oldest tribes of the American continent. They believe they are descendants of an ancient race, the Pukina, and consider themselves owners of the lake and the water. The Quechua and Aymara languages have their roots in the extinct language of the Uros. They say that Uru was the derogatory way in which the Aymara called them for their habits of going out to fish and hunt at night and that it means men of the dawn. The real name of their caste is Kotsuña which means men of the lake.

Recent DNA studies reveal that the Uros are not genetically related to Amazonian tribes, as previously thought, and that they are unique and different from other American peoples. They are thus excluded from the groups that entered the continent from Asia through Alaska when there was an ice bridge linking the two land masses and who colonized a supposedly unpopulated America. Their features and darker skin make some anthropologists consider the possibility that they are directly descended from Polynesian ancestors who arrived by sea.

El lago tiene dos accidentes, el primero es geográfico y se llama Estrecho de Tiquina, separa el saco de agua grande, conocido como Chucuito, de otro, mucho menor en extensión y en profundidad, que es el lago Huiñaymarca. Su área primitiva, la del lago al completo, era mucho más extensa y en la actualidad se considera un lago residual, aún así sigue pareciendo inmenso. El segundo accidente es político, fue negociado en algún despacho y divide al lago con una línea inventada. Un poco más de la mitad para Perú y un poco menos de la mitad para Bolivia.

Vivaz, la niña salta a la barca que Viajante comparte con cinco hermanas misioneras, el cocinero de un vida-a-bordo de buceo, una joven pareja de recién enamorados en mitad de sus viajes en solitario, un alma libre con cátedra en la Universidad de Leiden y una familia de cinco, de esas que ya son raras de ver en Europa. Reina Silvana se presenta como perteneciente a la tribu de los Uros, da la bienvenida a su comunidad y arranca a cantar con la chispa y el desparpajo de una Lola Flores lacustre.

Los jóvenes Uros han encontrado una solución para adaptar su Comunidad a la creciente demanda turística y mantener, en cierto modo, sus costumbres. Sebastián, es barquero a tiempo parcial y lo compagina con sus estudios en la universidad, cuenta que su pueblo es considerado una de las tribus más antiguas del continente americano. Se creen descendientes de una raza milenaria, los Pukina, y se consideran dueños del lago y del agua. Los idiomas quechua y aymara urden sus raíces en el idioma extinto de los Uros. Cuentan que Uru era la forma despectiva en que los llamaban los Aymaras por sus costumbres de salir a pescar y cazar por la noche y que significa hombres de la aurora. El verdadero nombre de su casta es Kotsuña que quiere decir hombres del lago.

Recientes estudios de ADN revelan que los Uros no tienen relación genética con tribus amazónicas, como se pensaba, y que son únicos y diferentes al resto de pueblos americanos. De este modo quedan excluidos de entre los grupos que entraron al continente desde Asia por Alaska cuando existió un puente de hielo que unía ambas masas terrestres y que colonizaron una América supuestamente despoblada. Income from tourism is managed by the community and reinvested in the maintenance of the islands, medical care for the inhabitants and other fundamental needs. Además de ser un delicioso alimento de base, también la usan como antiinflamatorio envolviendo la zona del dolor con juncos.

– Así la totora absorbe el dolor – explica el joven, quien asegura haberlo usado en numerosas ocasiones. –Y si hace calor rodamos el tallo entre las manos hasta que se parte y acercamos los trozos a la frente que se siente fresca.

Las barcas les conferían movilidad para huir del opresor y sobre ellas desenvolvían pacíficamente su existencia; pescaban, dormían y encendían pequeños fuegos para cocinar y calentarse. Las balsas fueron evolucionando hasta convertirse en las actuales islas flotantes, construidas de totora tejida sobre sus propias raíces, con capacidad de soportar varias familias y una durabilidad de algunas décadas. A la base consolidada de la isla le van añadiendo capas de totora para compensar el hundimiento gradual.

—Así lo cubrimos, así. Bastante totora le ponemos —explica un hombre de entrada edad a los turistas que desembarcan. —Entonces cuando es un metro ya nosotros podemos invitar a otros residentes de otras islas para inaugurar la isla. Entonces acá los varones podemos jugar nuestro futbito, las damas podemos jugar nuestro volei; basketbol no vamos a poder jugar porque el balón no rebota…—bromea con los visitantes —con la finalidad de compactar, tiene que aplanarse, la totora estaba a un metro y al compactar llega a bajar a unos cincuenta o sesenta centímetros. Los ingresos procedentes del turismo son gestionados por la comunidad y reinvertidos en el mantenimiento de las islas, atención médica de sus habitantes y otras necesidades fundamentales. Hoy

Reina Silvana passes her little hat to collect the well-deserved reward for the service rendered on board. This is how she entertains herself in the afternoons after school, more out of imitation of her elders than out of necessity or obligation. Her community lives off the tourists and she wants to participate to the best of her ability. With a satisfied laugh, she hops away and orders the pilot of the ship that is about to set sail to wait for her, we are here. Sebastian approaches from starboard and the little girl, feeling like a pirate of the Andean Lake, jumps on board another raft. The passengers with their Asian smiles enthusiastically welcome the unexpected crew member. Entering the waters of the old lake, her high-pitched voice is heard saying: —Now in Japanese!

Reina Silvana pasa su sombrerito para recoger la merecida recompensa por el servicio prestado a bordo. Así se entretiene por las tardes al volver del colegio, más por imitación a los mayores que por necesidad u obligación. Su comunidad vive de los turistas y ella quiere participar en la medida de sus posibilidades. Una risa satisfecha se aleja a saltitos y ordena al piloto de la nave que está a punto de zarpar que la espere, que ya llegamos. Sebastián se acerca por estribor y la pequeña, sintiéndose pirata del lago andino, salta al abordaje de otra balsa. Los pasajeros de sonrisa asiática acogen con entusiasmo a la inesperada tripulante. Adentrándose en las aguas del viejo lago se oye su voz aguda que dice: —¡Ahora en japonés!

Across all our departments in AMA, we aim to ensure our designs and actions contribute towards an energy efficient building. This year we opened a Sustainable Department which follows the HM Government’s implementation of the Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) regulation. We prepare ‘Environmental Statements’ and ‘Sustainability and Energy Savings Reports’ for our clients and architects, to discuss all possible solutions on how to design an energy efficient building.

Our work follows an ‘energy hierarchy’ strategy. First, we investigate the orientation of the building to see how we can take advantage of the sun.

We then make sure the building envelope is optimised. This is where insulating walls and selecting high specification glazing is very important, to ensure heat transfer between the exterior and interior of the building is minimised. In conjunction with this, we add external shading to windows exposed to solar radiation.

Our next step is to deliver energy to the building in an energy efficient way. We are constantly researching into efficient cooling, heating and ventilation systems and methods for supplying electricity without losses.

Implementing renewable energy technologies is third in our energy hierarchy. This is because we believe in reducing a building’s energy consumption first, before covering the energy demand with renewables.

Our final approach is to introduce a management system, also known as Building Management System (BMS) or home automation system, which controls and/or monitors how the building is performing and enables the building owner or manager to identify areas that are consuming too much energy. Water conservation is also considered in this section, although it is considered a priority from the get-go.

En todos nuestros departamentos de AMA, nuestro objetivo es garantizar que nuestros diseños y acciones contribuyan a un edificio energéticamente eficiente. Este año hemos abierto un Departamento de Sostenibilidad que sigue la aplicación de la normativa de Edificios de Consumo de Energía Casi Nulo (nZEB) del Gobierno de Su Majestad. Preparamos «Declaraciones Ambientales» e «Informes de Sostenibilidad y Ahorro de Energía» para nuestros clientes y arquitectos, para discutir todas las soluciones posibles sobre cómo diseñar un edificio energéticamente eficiente.

Nuestro trabajo sigue una estrategia de «jerarquía energética». En primer lugar, investigamos la orientación del edificio para ver cómo podemos aprovechar el sol.

A continuación, nos aseguramos de optimizar la envolvente del edificio. Para ello es muy importante aislar las paredes y seleccionar un acristalamiento de alta especificación, para garantizar que se minimiza la transferencia de calor entre el exterior y el interior del edificio. Junto con esto, añadimos sombreado exterior a las ventanas expuestas a la radiación solar.

Nuestro siguiente paso es suministrar energía al edificio de forma eficiente. Investigamos constantemente en sistemas eficientes de refrigeración, calefacción y ventilación, y en métodos para suministrar electricidad sin pérdidas.

La aplicación de tecnologías de energía renovable es la tercera en nuestra jerarquía energética. Esto se debe a que creemos que hay que reducir primero el consumo de energía de un edificio, antes de cubrir la demanda energética con energías renovables.

Nuestro planteamiento final es introducir un sistema de gestión, también conocido como Sistema de Gestión de Edificios (BMS) o sistema de domótica, que controle y/o supervise el funcionamiento del edificio y permita al propietario o gestor del mismo identificar las áreas que consumen demasiada energía. La conservación del agua también se contempla en este apartado, aunque se considera prioritaria desde el principio.

Carteia was a naval military base navale praesidium— of the first order since Carthaginian times because of its advantageous location in the Strait of Hercules, but it was also predominately a fishing city. This is demonstrated by some of the coins produced by this mint, which feature dolphins, boats, rudders, tridents, and more. One particularly attractive coin sticks out among the rest; it shows a fisherman with a rod sitting on a rock while holding a basket at his side. For this reason, the natives of Carteia were very sensitive to everything that had to do with their most important economic activities and with fishing in particular, since it served both for their own consumption and for the exportation of its derivatives (salted fish, garum...) to all the confines of the Empire.

Pliny the Elder, in the first century of our era, in volume III of the encyclopedia Natural History, quotes an incredible story that happened in the city, collected by another Roman naturalist of the second century B.C., Trebius Niger, based on the observations made by L. Lucullus, proconsul of Baetica. Curiously, he warns that “the other cases that this author na-

Por su situación estratégica en el Estrecho de Hércules, Carteia era una plaza militar naval —navale praesidium— de primer orden desde época cartaginesa, pero también era una ciudad eminentemente pesquera. Así lo atestiguan algunas monedas acuñadas en esta ceca, plagadas de delfines, de barcos, timones, tridentes… de entre las que destaca una en particular, muy simpática, que representa a un pescador con caña sentado sobre una piedra con lo que parece ser un sombrero de ala ancha sobre la cabeza y un cesto a su lado. Por eso, los naturales de Carteia eran muy sensibles a todo lo que tuviese que ver con sus actividades económicas más relevantes y con la pesca en particular, ya que le servía tanto para consumo propio, como para la exportación de sus derivados (salazones, garum…) a todos los confines del Imperio.

Plinio el Viejo, en el siglo I de nuestra era, en el tomo III de la enciclopedia Historia Natural, cita un increíble relato acontecido en la ciudad, recogido por otro naturalista romano del siglo II a.C., Trebius Níger, en base a las observaciones hechas por L. The fishermen’s quarter of Carteia had long been in turmoil. The salting factories did not stop suffering night attacks and the production of garum was suffering. Some mornings the pools would be turned upside down, with all the macerated fish spilled around; at other times the larger fish that had been dried out would just disappear as if by magic. The smell after each raid was always pestilential, unbearable. Everything had to be cleaned before the sun shone brightly. Sometimes it was necessary to completely empty the attacked basins, delicately make the mixture again, get more salt from the Palmones salt pans in the neighboring town of Portus Albus and restart the process of making the most famous sauce in all of Rome. A real disaster.

The inhabitants of the area were familiar with marine animals that dared to approach the coast, such as those “black-footed” tuna mentioned by Strabo, fond of eating acorns from a creeping oak (oak?) that lived on the coast. Or to the forays of some herds of greedy Mediterranean seals that had become overly fond of eating the sweet grapes of the vineyards planted near the coast. That was the first op-

Algunas mañanas las piletas aparecían revueltas, con todo el pescado macerado derramado por los alrededores; otras veces los peces de mayor tamaño puestos a secar desaparecían sin más como por arte de magia. El olor tras cada razia era siempre pestilente, insoportable. Había que limpiar todo antes de que el sol brillara con intensidad. A veces era necesario vaciar completamente las piletas atacadas, volver a hacer delicadamente la mezcla de nuevo, conseguir más sal de las salinas del Palmones en la vecina localidad de Portus Albus y reiniciar el proceso de elaboración de la salsa más famosa de toda Roma. Un verdadero desastre.

In any case, they reinforced the fences of the factories to secure their manufactures, but the acts of vandalism continued. To no avail, the nighttime assaults on the salting pools did not cease.

Heavily armed night watch patrols took over the security of the compounds, but whatever it was that was destroying the garum production, it was stealthy enough not to be easily detected. Finally, one dark night, it was the dogs who, alerted by their sense of smell, detected the intruder’s presence. When reinforcements arrived, the pack had a real sea monster cornered. The scene they found was absolutely Dantesque. A giant octopus, completely covered in a mixture of water, salt, spices, small fish and the fermenting viscera of larger fish, was defending itself from the attack of the dogs, who had little to do against the sea beast. It used the tip of its tentacles as whips with which it whipped those animals or humans who dared to come close enough -the stench it emitted was unbearable- and the thicker part as if they were maces to strike. Each of its eight limbs measured about 9 meters and could not be covered with two arms by the thickest part, so they had to measure almost a meter in diameter. Some of their larger suckers resembled basins, while the smaller ones resembled clay pots.

The octopus, knowing that in the water it was little less than invincible, tried to escape to the shore by going to a large tree nearby where it had learned to overcome the obstacle of the wall; but its exit was cut off by a large group of fishermen with tridents and harpoons who kept spearing it, again and again. In the end, with great effort and not without some injured and bruised people, they managed to kill the giant mollusk and stop its three enormous hearts.

Aware that their story was not going to be very credible before the authorities, they took the precaution of keeping the head, which weighed more than 230 kilos, until they showed it to the proconsul of Baetica, a great fan of these matters. But the inhabitants of Carteia, unlike the politician, did not seem very surprised by the event. Although they had not experienced similar situations, they had found squid and cuttlefish of a similar size to this beast stranded

Finalmente, una noche oscura, fueron los perros los que, alertados por su olfato, detectaron la presencia del intruso. Cuando llegaron los refuerzos, la jauría tenía acorralado a un auténtico monstruo marino. La escena que encontraron fue absolutamente dantesca. Un pulpo gigante, cubierto completamente de la mezcla de agua, sal, especias y peces pequeños y vísceras de peces de mayor tamaño en fermentación, se defendía del ataque de los perros que poco tenían que hacer frente a la bestia marina. Usaba la punta de sus tentáculos como látigos con los que azotaba a aquellos animales o humanos que osaban acercaban lo suficiente —el hedor que despedía era insoportable— y la parte más gruesa como si fueran mazas para golpear. Cada una de sus ocho extremidades medía alrededor de 9 metros y no se podían abarcar con dos brazos por la parte más gruesa, así que debían medir casi un metro de diámetro. Algunas de sus ventosas mayores parecían lebrillos, mientras que las más pequeñas se asemejaban a orzas de barro.

El pulpo, sabiendo que en el agua era poco menos que invencible, trataba de escapar a la orilla yendo a un gran árbol cercano por donde había aprendido a salvar el obstáculo de la tapia; pero tenía la salida cortada por un nutrido grupo de pescadores con tridentes y arpones que no paraban de alancearlo, una y otra vez. Al final, con mucho esfuerzo y no sin algunas personas heridas y magulladas, se consiguió matar al molusco gigante y detener sus tres enormes corazones.

What is the credibility of the story told by Pliny? Do giant octopuses exist or did they exist more than two thousand years ago? Can they get out of the water? If we stick to science, there is still one species of large octopus living today: the giant Pacific octopus, distributed throughout the seas of half the world. Its normal weight is 50 kilos, but it is not uncommon to find specimens that have reached 200 kilos, and there is even one that reached 300 kilos. The latter would fit into the measurements of our particular sea monster of the Strait.

On the other hand, it is known that octopuses can survive out of the water for a long time, it is also known that they can move along the rocks of

Si nos atenemos a la ciencia, todavía hoy vive una especie de pulpo de grandes dimensiones: el Pulpo gigante del Pacífico, distribuido por los mares de medio mundo. Su peso normal es de 50 kilos, pero

Por otro lado, se sabe que los pulpos pueden sobrevivir fuera del agua mucho rato, también se sabe que pueden moverse por las rocas de las orillas para alimentarse en charcas intermareales, aunque desde luego, el relato es absolutamente asombroso y extraño. Sin embargo, los científicos avisan de que la mayoría de las especies de pulpos permanecen sin describir y la exploración de los fondos y las zonas abisales, podría proporcionar alguna que otra sorpresa. En fin, quién sabe… pero en cualquier caso se trata de una historia extraordinaria digna de ser contada.

Canelón de aguacate relleno de buey de mar y gambas con aire de lima.

En esta primera entrega presentamos un primer plato frío, utilizando productos de primera calidad y elaborado con una técnica actual de cocina. Ideal para las fechas venideras.

Ingredientes (para cuatro personas)

- Aguacate: 3 unidades

- Buey de Mar: 200 gr limpio

- Gamba blanca fresca

- Cebollino: 0;25 de unidad

- Aceite de Oliva

- Mayonesa: 50 gr

- Limas: 200 gr

- Tomate ensalada: 50 gr

- Micro mezclum: 5 gr

- Escarola frisse: 5 gr

- Lecitina de soja: Según prospecto

-Sal y Pimienta blanca molida: c/s

Método de Elaboración Canelón

blanca de esta zona, siempre fresca, la coceremos en agua hirviendo con abundante sal, yo en algunos restaurantes que he trabajado y he tenido oportunidad he cocido todo el marisco en agua de mar. Una vez echemos las gambas apagaremos el fuego y cuando vayan subiendo a la superficie las vamos enfriando con agua y hielo. Una vez estén frías las pelaremos y cortaremos en Mirepoix, trocitos de 5 cm.

Hacemos la mayonesa si se va a consumir en breve: mezclaremos cebollino picado y agregamos el buey de mar y la gamba, mezclaremos bien y reservamos.

Relleno: Coceremos el buey de mar dependiendo del peso, 500 gr más o menos durante 12 minutos en agua hirviendo con abundante sal. Una vez cocido y frío, le extraemos toda la carne y coral si tuviera, y lo reservamos.

Para las gambas que por proximidad utilizo la

Al Aguacate simplemente lo cortaremos por la mitad, sacaremos el hueso y la piel con una cuchara. Seguidamente lo laminaremos con una mandolina para que todas sean del mismo grosor de dos milímetros, colocaremos papel film en la base, pondremos el aguacate laminado encima del papel y haciendo forma de rectángulo, en el centro y a todo lo largo colocaremos el relleno, ayudándonos del papel film iremos girándolo hasta formar el canelón.

Para el Aire de Lima: Extraemos el zumo de las limas, mezclaremos con un poco de agua y le añadimos la lecitina de soja, las cantidades nos lo marcará el recipiente de la lecitina de soja. Después hay que emulsionar o bien con un turmix o una bomba de pecera y nos irá apareciendo una especie de espuma blanca.

Para el Aceite de Cebollino: utilizaremos un aceite de oliva suave, introduciremos el cebollino cortado y le daremos turmix durante 3 minutos, seguidamente lo pasaremos por un colador fino.

Emplatado

Ponemos el canelón en el centro del plato, alrededor colocaremos el micromezclum, la escarola y algunos gajos de tomate, encima del canelón echaremos el aceite de cebollino, sal maldon y el aire de lima. Espolvoreamos un poco de cebollino y listo.

To say legislation shapes conservation would be a colossal understatement considering the ripple effects that the decisions of the few have on the lives of the many, both humans and others!

The passage of legislation can have a significant impact on nature conservation efforts. For example, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) has been instrumental in helping to protect threatened and endangered species in the United States. The ESA has led to the protection of many iconic species, such as the bald eagle and the grizzly bear.

However, the ESA has also faced criticism over the years. Some argue that the law is too restrictive and that it hurts economic development. It protects lands from mining and drilling efforts which limits the extraction capabilities of the oil and gas industry. Others claim that the ESA hasn’t been effective in protecting threatened and endangered species.

Regardless of these criticisms, it is clear that the ESA has had a positive impact on nature conservation in the United States. The law has helped to preserve many threatened and endangered species, and it has also raised awareness about the importance of biodiversity. Therefore, you might consider contacting your own government officials as a constituent to remind them why acts like the ESA are so important to you. A lot of noise from members of the public is often just the reminder they need!

Sea Squill. Drimia maritima

The Mediterranean region is a global diversity hotspot for bulbous plants: species and groups with underground storage organs that sprout during some times of the year and disappear again underground during others.  There are two main flowering periods for bulbs in the Mediterranean.  The majority flower from late winter to the end of spring, but there is another flowering period during the end of the summer and beginning of autumn.  Such species often produce leaves that wither and die at the end of the spring, retreating underground again, and it is only when a flower or flower spike appears that the plant’s presence becomes apparent again.  Many bulbs are very beautiful and some can be used in horticulture.  Such is the case with the Sea Squill, a striking species that is native to the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar.  It is common in the wild on the Rock, but the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens also use the plant in landscaping, particularly in beds that receive little water, such as those with succulent plants.  Being a native species, many different pollinators visit the flowers, particularly bees, wasps and flies, but the plant also relies on wind pollination.

La región mediterránea es un punto caliente de diversidad global para las plantas bulbosas: especies y grupos con órganos de almacenamiento subterráneo que brotan durante algunas épocas del año y desaparecen de nuevo bajo tierra durante otras. En el Mediterráneo hay dos periodos principales de floración de los bulbos. La mayoría florece desde finales del invierno hasta el final de la primavera, pero hay otro periodo de floración durante el final del verano y el principio del otoño. World Mental Health Day

Every October 10th we celebrate World Mental Health Day. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation of Mental Health, whom have members and contacts in more than 150 countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis for mental health, fueling short- and long-term stresses and undermining the mental health of millions. In Gibraltar it’s no different. Last year’s local statistics show that 32% of people report of having some form of anxiety and more than 10% note feelings of depression. It is clearly evident that not just in Gibraltar, but in a lot of countries that there’s been a rise of people suffering from a mental health disorder, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has created this mental health crisis. At the same time, mental health services had been severely disrupted. In some countries that aren’t as well off, it is still on hold as they are still dealing with the virus.

Apart from the pandemic, another factor on why many people have poor mental health is due to their busy work schedules. Gibraltarians work on an average of 40 hours per week. We work 4 more hours

weekly than in the U.K. . It has been challenging for people to have a healthy balance of work and breaks. A lack of time for friends and family and health commitments can negatively impact an employee. A person who has extra baggage at work every day can find it difficult to feel happy and build relationships at their workplace

This year’s theme is “Making mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority”. As mental health continues to be a difficult subject to talk about due to the stigma and discrimination behind it. The goal is to strengthen mental health care so that people’s needs are met through a community-based network of accessible, affordable, and quality services and supports. Mental health must be valued, promoted, and protected.

To improve your mental health, you can: Take breaks, have a hobby, go out with friends and family, enjoy a cup of tea with your work colleagues, give back to the community, and much more. You will see a difference in your overall mood, no matter what you try to make your mental health better.

Día Mundial de la Salud Mental

Cada 10 de octubre se celebra el Día Mundial de la Salud Mental. Se celebró por primera vez en 1992 por iniciativa de la Federación Mundial de Salud Mental, que tiene miembros y contactos en más de 150 países. La pandemia del COVID-19 ha creado una crisis mundial para la salud mental, alimentando el estrés a corto y largo plazo y socavando la salud mental de millones de personas. En Gibraltar no es diferente. Las estadísticas locales del año pasado muestran que el 32% de las personas afirman tener algún tipo de ansiedad y más del 10% constatan sentimientos de depresión. Es claramente evidente que no sólo en Gibraltar, sino en muchos países, ha aumentado el número de personas que sufren un trastorno de salud mental, en gran parte debido a la pandemia del Covid-19 que ha creado esta crisis de salud mental. Al mismo tiempo, los servicios de salud mental se han visto gravemente perturbados. En algunos países que no están tan bien, siguen en suspenso, ya que todavía están lidiando con el virus. Aparte de la pandemia, otro factor por el que muchas personas tienen una mala salud mental se debe a sus apretados horarios de trabajo. Los gibraltareños trabajan una media de 40 horas semanales. Trabaja-

mos 4 horas semanales más que en el Reino Unido. Es un reto para la gente tener un equilibrio saludable entre el trabajo y los descansos. La falta de tiempo para los amigos y la familia y los compromisos de salud pueden afectar negativamente a un empleado. Una persona que tiene una carga extra en el trabajo cada día puede tener dificultades para sentirse feliz y establecer relaciones en su lugar de trabajo

El tema de este año es «Hacer de la salud mental y el bienestar de todos, una prioridad mundial». Ya que la salud mental sigue siendo un tema difícil de tratar debido al estigma y la discriminación que hay detrás. El objetivo es reforzar la atención a la salud mental para que se satisfagan las necesidades de las personas mediante una red comunitaria de servicios y apoyos accesibles, asequibles y de calidad. La salud mental debe ser valorada, promovida y protegida.

Para mejorar tu salud mental, puedes Tomar descansos, tener un pasatiempo, salir con los amigos y la familia, disfrutar de una taza de té con tus compañeros de trabajo, devolver a la comunidad, y mucho más. Forest Bath in Pinar del Rey

In the Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the Pinar del Rey is located between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera, in Cadiz.

Its origin dates back to 1800, this place was chosen to plant pine trees (Pinus Pinea) brought from Vejer de la Frontera, and thus obtain wood for the construction of ships.

It currently consists of a recreational area with a picnic area and barbecues, the Alhaja stream, the Nature Classroom and a botanical garden. In addition, there are two trails: El Cerro del Águila and Tajo del Pajarraco.

A peculiar place, with a mild climate, and a migratory bird route. Its environmental conditions make it a paradise for flora. We can even see some plants that only occur in northern Spain and the Canary Islands. We will walk through a mixed forest, with cork oaks, gall oaks, poplars, alders and ash trees, with a wide variety of botanical species, some of them endangered. In addition, of course we will discover its rich and varied fauna.

En el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, se ubica el Pinar del Rey entre los términos municipales de San Roque y Castellar de la Frontera, en Cádiz.

Su origen se remonta a 1800, este lugar fue elegido para plantar ejemplares de pinos piñoneros (Pinus Pinea) traídos desde Vejer de la Frontera, y obtener así madera para la construcción de navíos.

Actualmente consta de un área recreativa con una zona de picnic y barbacoas, el arroyo de Alhaja, el Aula de Naturaleza y un jardín botánico. Además, existen dos senderos: El Cerro del Águila y el Tajo del Pajarraco.

Un lugar peculiar, de clima suave, y paso de ruta de aves migratorias. Sus condiciones ambientales lo convierten en un paraíso para la flora. Incluso podemos ver algunas plantas que únicamente se dan en el norte de España y en las Islas Canarias. Recorreremos un bosque mixto, con alcornoques, quejigos, álamos, alisos y fresnos, con una extensa variedad de especies botánicas, algunas de ellas amenazadas. Y por supuesto descubriremos su rica y variada fauna.

Además, el Pinar del Rey, formó parte de un asentamiento arenoso de fondos marinos, con lo cual podremos encontrar fácilmente conchas y piezas marinas.

Descubre el efecto acumulativo que tiene la naturaleza, los matices en los que nunca te habías fijado, la calma que ofrece un lugar con tanta magia.

Para comenzar la actividad dejaremos el coche al final del aparcamiento de la zona recreativa del Pinar del Rey (San Roque), es importante llevar agua, protección solar, (opcional esterilla para suelo y cámara de fotos).

The treatment, cure, and care provided to deal with some evil or disease was known to the Greeks as therapeia. Our word “treatment” is derived from this. It is normal for someone to wonder how they will administer the forest to them if we add it. Will it be in pills, syrups, or serum? It doesn’t harm, so don’t worry. Even with all the humor, individuals who read us need to understand that we lead the individual to a total immersion in Nature, in some type of natural habitat, preferably woods.

Using the forest as therapy means that we will use the benefits provided by Nature as a way to intervene in people’s health. Not only in their physical health, but also in their mental and social health; even, for those who so wish, in their spiritual health.

Each of these people has a specific need, or a specific health problem, or a personal difficulty. Taking into account these personal needs, we will try to find the most concise way to repair it, doing it in a structured way.

The approach of the Forest Baths is always therapeutic. The professionals who are dedicated to the Forest Baths are trained to be able to collaborate with guarantees with health professionals, making available to the general public, to the Institutions, all the set of interventions that we have.

Bromas aparte, lo que tienen que saber los que nos lean es que llevamos a la persona a realizar una inmersión completa, mente y cuerpo, en la Naturaleza, en algún tipo de entorno natural, especialmente los bosques.

Usar el bosque como terapia significa que utilizaremos los beneficios que procuran la Naturaleza, como una forma de intervenir en la salud de las personas. No solo en su salud física, también en la mental y en la social; incluso, para los que así lo deseen, en la salud espiritual. Cada una de esas personas tiene una necesidad específica, o un problema de salud concreto, o alguna dificultad personal. Teniendo en cuenta estas necesidades personales trataremos de buscar la forma más concisa de repararlo, haciéndolo de manera estructurada.

El enfoque de los Baños de Bosque es siempre terapéutico.
