These objects called books, were written by an author who knew how to narrate and who possessed talent, culture and generosity.

Existió un tiempo en el que un objeto llamado libro fascinaba a todo el que lo tuviera, pues ponía al alcance de las gente humilde la única posibilidad de conocer las maravillas del Polo Norte o de las selvas africanas, sentir las pasiones de los protagonistas o imaginarse las aventuras a orillas del Nilo. Este objeto llamado libro estaba escrito por un autor que sabía narrar, que poseía talento, cultura y generosidad.

Nowadays, anyone with a mobile phone and a Wi-Fi connection can travel anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds, even if that means via a home video on YouTube or by scrolling through Google Maps. But are these sorts of interactions really travelling? To quote the indispensable Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa, the best way to travel is to feel.

Did you know, dear reader, that there is a report stating that young people equate reading to studying, as if they were synonymous with one another, and that they are not aware of the pleasures and benefits they are losing out on through a life without literature. The consequences of this are so evident that they cause unease: the impossibility of presenting sound arguments, repeatedly using catchphrases in conversation, a weakness in defending their positions, or notably, an inability to develop any task or concept that requires minimum intellectual ability. Faculties such as eloquence or coherence are lost forever. I recommend watching Werner Herzog’s documentary “Lo and Behold. Reveries of the Connected World”.

I could not agree more with Roberto Casati and the condemnations he makes in his book “Praise of paper. Against digital colonialism.” He writes that they are robbing us of calm and profound reading, turning us into ‘informavores’, devouring information that is fragmented, minimal, urgent and immediate, and the most worrisome thing of all, the increasing loss of attention. In short, we are being digitally colonised, another twist in the conversion of people into consumers.

The medium is not the problem, it is the market, which wants us to believe that there is no life beyond the bit or the digital, forcing us to not only buy their devices, their technologies, and their slavery to constant updates, but they also want to permeate our lives, our customs, tastes and dreams. In short, to own our very minds.

But we still have OTWO, in our magazine we offer you amazing articles every month where you can discover new places and stories that you may have never known existed, we even give you the opportunity to visit these places and together, share a unique experience.

Hoy día cualquier persona con un teléfono móvil y conexión wifi puede viajar a cualquier parte del mundo en cuestión de segundos, aunque sea a bordo de un vídeo doméstico en YouTube o haciendo escrol por Google Map. ¿Pero al interactuar de esta manera estamos viajando? Ya decía el imprescindible poeta portugués Fernando Pessoa que la mejor manera de viajar era sentir.

Sabías —querido lector— que hay un informe que dice que los jóvenes equiparan leer a estudiar, como si fueran sinónimos, y que no son consciente de los placeres y beneficios que pierden con una vida sin literatura. Las consecuencias son tan evidentes que provocan desasosiego: imposibilidad de la exposición de argumentos, apoyo redundante de coletillas al hablar, debilidad en la defensa de sus posiciones, o una notable incapacidad para desarrollar cualquier tarea o concepto que requiera un mínimo de habilidades intelectuales. Facultades como la elocuencia o la coherencia están perdidas para siempre. Les aconsejo que vean el documental de Werner Herzog “Lo and Behold. Reveries of the Connected World”. No puedo estar más de acuerdo con Roberto Casati y lo que denuncia en su libro “Elogio del papel. Contra el colonialismo digital”.

Escribe que nos están robando la lectura tranquila y profunda, convirtiéndonos en informávoros, devoradores de información fragmentada, mínima, urgente e inmediata, y lo más preocupante de todo, la creciente pérdida de atención. En definitiva, estamos siendo colonizados digitalmente, otra vuelta de tuerca en la conversión de ciudadanos en consumidores. El problema no es el medio, es el mercado, que quiere hacernos creer que no hay vida más allá del bit, de lo digital, obligándonos no solo a comprar sus dispositivos, sus tecnologías, su esclavitud a unas constantes actualizaciones, sino que también quieren entrar en nuestras vidas, nuestras costumbres, gustos y deseos. En definitiva, ser dueños de nuestras mentes.

Pero nos queda OTWO, en nuestra revista te ofrecemos cada mes sorprendentes reportajes que te descubrirán territorios e historias que ni te imaginaba que existían, incluso te damos la posibilidad de llevarte hasta ellos y compartir juntos una experiencia única.

Brazilian Red-cloak

There has been a lot of talk about fires in Brazil this year and its impact on the climate and biodiversity.

This is for good reason. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and it lies on the equator. This makes it of enormous importance to global biodiversity and it is no surprise that Brazil is home to a huge array of spectacular plants, from cacti in drylands to orchids and bromeliads in its humid rainforests.

Some of these are well-known garden plants such as the Bougainvilleas, which grow extremely well in Gibraltar and add a lot of colour to the urban environment and gardens. Despite its clumsy scientific name, the Brazilian Red-cloak is an extremely attractive shrub when it is in flower during the autumn period, coming to life just as our Mediterranean climate transitions from dry to wet. It is native to Brazil and neighbouring countries. The species belongs to the Acanthus family (Acanthaceae), named after the Bear’s Breeches Acanthus, which include the species Acanthus mollis from Gibraltar. This species is itself a popular garden plant in places where it isn’t native, such as the UK, even if it is considered a weed by some in Gibraltar!

En los últimos meses, se ha escrito y hablado mucho sobre los incendios que ha sufrido Brasil a lo largo de este año, haciendo hincapié sobre el posible impacto que provocaría en la biodiversidad y en el clima. La razón: Brasil es el quinto país más grande del planeta y lo recorre el trazo de la línea terrestre del ecuador. Estas causas, lo imbuye de una importancia vital para la biodiversidad global, sin sorprender que el país albergue una gran variedad de plantas espectaculares desde especies de cactus en las tierras más secas hasta orquídeas y bromelias en sus bosques húmedos.

Varias de estas especies son plantas de jardín bien conocidas, un ejemplo son las archiconocidas buganvillas que en Gibraltar crecen con frondosidad, aportando gran colorido al entorno urbano y, por supuesto, a los numerosos jardines. A pesar de su complicado nombre científico, el manto rojo brasileño, (megaskepasma erythrochlamys ), es un arbusto extremadamente atractivo cuando florece en otoño, mostrando su grandiosidad precisamente en el momento que el clima gira de seco a húmedo en esta vertiente mediterránea. La especie, originaria de Brasil y países vecinos, pertenece a la familia de los Acantos (Acanthaceae), y es renombrada como Acanto Pie de Oso, en la que se incluye la Acanthus mollis de Gibraltar. Se considera una planta de jardín popular en las localizaciones de donde no es oriunda, como Reino Unido. Incluso, hay en Gibraltar, quien la considera una mala hierba.

UN CLIMATE ACTION SUMMIT 2019 During a record-breaking week of massive global protests, the countries of the United Nations, together with businesses and civil society leaders, gathered in New York City with the promise of real action towards tackling climate change at the Climate Action Summit.

Following the gathering on the 23rd September, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres wrote; “I called on the climate action summit to serve as a springboard to set us on the right path ahead of crucial 2020 deadlines established by the Paris agreement on climate change. And many leaders – from many countries and sectors – stepped up”.

However, many climate activists and scientists have concluded that the promises to make real strides towards net-zero carbon emissions and to ensure average global temperatures do not exceed 1.5 °C have fallen drastically short of what is required to meet the 12-year cut off point.

Three of the world’s biggest carbon emitters failed to demonstrate any real commitments or plan to

reduce emissions. With India and China making no promises to reduce coal production or to increase climate objectives respectively, and no comments made at all by the United States during the summit.

Other countries such as the United Kingdom and France, committed to reaching net carbon neutrality by 2050. However, there are growing concerns that governments have no real plans as to how to implement and achieve these goals. Climate advisors have warned that without new and robust carbon-cutting measures, they will likely not meet the 2050 deadline.

But some notable commitments and strides were made. Sixty-six countries announced plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and sixty-five further countries expressed their intention to update or enhance their climate plans by the end of 2020.

All of the least developing countries have also pledged to enhance their climate plans next year and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Eighty-seven companies made commitments to set climate targets, including IKEA, Nestle and Danone.

And Russia, the world’s fourth-largest carbon emitter, finally formally agreed to adopt the Paris Agreement.

While these are all steps in the right direction and progress has been made, more drastic action is required. After the summit, the UN Secretary-General warned that; “much more is still needed to reach carbon neutrality by 2050”.

According to the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C, published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018, “limiting global warming to 1.5 °C compared with 2 °C would reduce challenging impacts on ecosystems, human health and well-being”.

But with global emissions continuing to rise and the IPCC’s advised 12-year window for action rapidly narrowing, a real and swift response by governments and corporations to meet these crucial targets has to occur on an international level.

Cumbre de Acción Climática de la ONU 2019 A lo largo de una semana record en protestas masivas a nivel mundial, países miembros de la Organización de Naciones Unidas, junto con las empresas y líderes de la sociedad civil, han mantenido reuniones en la ciudad de New York en la Cumbre de Acción Climática, con la firme promesa de llevar a cabo una acción real para enfrentarse al cambio climático.

Tras la convención del 23 de septiembre, António Guterres, uno de los Secretarios Generales expresó: “llamé a la cumbre de acción climática como trampolín, para establecer el camino correcto antes de los plazos cruciales que establece el Acuerdo de París sobre el cambio climático . Han sido muchos los líderes — de muchos países y sectores — los que han dado un paso hacia adelante”.

Sin embargo, muchos activistas climáticos y científicos han concluido que las promesas de avanzar hacia las emisiones de carbono cero y el promedio de la temperatura mundial no supere el 1,5ºC han quedado por debajo de lo que se necesita para cumplir el objetivo en doce años.

Tres de los mayores emisores de carbono del mundo no han mostrado ningún compromiso ni plan real para reducir las emisiones. Con India y China sin hacer promesa alguna para reducir la producción de carbón, tampoco ninguno de ellos ha aumentado

los objetivos climatológicamente hablando y EEUU, no se ha dignado a hacer un comentario durante la cumbre mundial.

Otros países como Reino Unido y Francia, se han comprometido a neutralizar el carbono para 2050.

Aunque existe una preocupación en alza ante la falta de planes reales de cómo implementar y alcanzar este objetivo. Los asesores climáticos han advertido que sin nuevas y sólidas medidas de reducción de carbono, es probable que no cumplan con la fecha límite de 2050.

Pero en la cumbre, se han hecho compromisos y avances notables. Sesenta y seis países han anunciado planes que les permitirían lograr la neutralización del carbono para el 2050 y otros sesenta y cinco, han dejado reflejada sus intenciones para mejorara y actualizar sus planes climáticos para finales del 2020.

Los países menos desarrollados, se han comprometido a mejorar sus planes climáticos para el año próximo y alcanzar emisiones netas cero para 2050.

En el apartado de empresas, ochenta y siete se han comprometido a establecer objetivos climáticos en sus planteamientos, entre ellas IKEA, Danone y Nestlé.

Rusia, el cuarto mayor emisor de carbono del mundo, acordó finalmente adoptar el Acuerdo de París.

Es patente que todos los pasos acordados van en la dirección correcta pero, se requieren acciones más drásticas. Tras la cumbre, el Secretario General advirtió que: “se necesita aún mucho más para alcanzar en 2050 neutralizar las emisiones de carbono”.

El Informe especial sobre el calentamiento global de 1.5 ° C, publicado por el Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) en 2018, “limitar el calentamiento global a 1.5 ° C en comparación con 2 ° C, reduciría de forma drástica los impactos en los ecosistemas, la salud y el bienestar”.

OCEAN CLEANING DEVICE SUCCESSFULLY COLLECTS PLASTIC FOR THE FIRST TIME

For the first time since its initial design, a massive rubbish collecting device has successfully removed large amounts of plastic from an island of litter the size of France floating in the Pacific Ocean.

The 25-year-old Dutch engineer and creator of the floating contraption, Boyan Slat, announced the achievement in early October on Twitter, together with a picture of some of the collected debris, writing, “Our ocean cleanup system is now finally catching plastic, from one-ton ghost nets to tiny microplastics! Also, anyone missing a wheel?”

The enormous U-shaped contraption is made up of a 600m long floating boom with a skirt shaped net suspended below it. No power is needed to operate the device as the movements and currents of the sea are used to propel it through the rubbish.

Announced by Mr. Stat in 2012, the development of the Ocean Clean up device has encountered some technical challenges along the way. When tested last year, the device was first unable to catch any debris due to the speed at which it was moving through the plastic, and later in the year, it broke apart due to rough sea conditions.

But now, with the recent success of this device, the Ocean Clean Up Project can begin moving into its next phase. With plans to develop the technology further, increase the size of the structures, and deploy more of these devices so that they can gather the thousands of tonnes of plastic currently floating in the Pacific.

The massive island of floating rubbish occupying

the waters between California and Hawaii is known as the “Great Pacific garbage patch”. It is the largest of five major offshore waste accumulation areas resulting from converging ocean currents and is estimated to contain 80,000 tonnes of plastic waste.

In total, 99% of the rubbish found in the patch is plastic, with scientists noting that microplastics also appear to be accumulating rapidly within the area as well.

All of this marine debris can have a massive impact on ocean wildlife, with animals such as sea turtles and albatrosses mistaking plastic bags or resin pellets for food, and other marine mammals such as seals becoming entangled in discarded plastic fishing nets.

Microplastics and other litter can also decrease algae and plankton growth, which in turn can affect animals that rely on these organisms as a food source, resulting in the disruption of entire food chains.

The Ocean Clean Up Foundation hopes to have a fleet ready to launch in the next few years and believes that the final design will be able to collect half of the debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

LONDON’S SECOND ANNUAL CAR FREE DAY London’s largest ever Car Free Day took place on 22nd September with 20 kilometres of roads closed to traffic across parts of the city centre, with a wide variety of street-based events planned for both young and old to enjoy across the capital.

Another 18 boroughs across the Greater London area also banned cars on more than 200 streets to hold community events.

Collectively named ‘Reimagine’, the events ranged from yoga sessions, arts and crafts marquees, BMX and skate ramps, guided walks, treasure hunts and various types of live entertainment for all ages.

On the world-famous Tower Bridge, a mass yoga session was organised with hundreds arriving early to enjoy a sunrise yoga experience with the spectacular and quintessential backdrop of the Tower of London.

In the usually traffic-heavy area of the City of London, a hedge maze was installed on Cheapside and a festival space with acts performing on a solar-powered stage at Bank Junction. Children and adults were also able to enjoy the unique opportunity to race go-karts in the Square Mile.

The purpose of the all-day event was to raise awareness of climate change and toxic air quality in the city by encouraging locals and visitors to use fewer cars and to explore the capital in other ways.

The day also aims to bring communities together and to allow children to play and enjoy their local areas.

London is currently the fourth most polluted city by nitrogen dioxide levels in the world, with pollu-

tion in the city contributing to around 9,000 premature deaths per year.

Other cities around the world have previously also organised car-free days, with Jakarta the capital of Indonesia and Vancouver, Canada holding similar events over the last few years.

With the Mayor’s goal to have 80% of all journeys in London taken via sustainable modes of transport by 2041, car-free day’s will hopefully encourage Londoners to ‘reimagine’ the capital without cars and change their daily travel behaviours by walking more, cycling or by using public transport. And in the long term, improve air quality and overall health conditions in the capital, as well as reducing the cities carbon emissions.

II Día sin Automóviles en Londres El pasado 22 de septiembre se celebró en Londres el más numeroso Día sin Coches, cerrándose veinte kilómetros (20 km.) de carreteras hacia el centro de la ciudad a la vez que se organizaron numeroso eventos para que jóvenes y mayores disfrutaran de la ciudad.

Otros 18 distritos del área metropolitana de Londres también cerraron doscientas calles prohibiendo el paso de vehículos, para celebrar eventos comunitarios.

El grupo conocido como “Reimagine”, propuso actividades que fueron sesiones de yoga, carpas para manualidades, rampas para BMX y skate, rutas guiadas, búsqueda del tesoro y entretenimientos en directo y para todas las edades.

En el famoso Puente de la Torre, se ha organizado una sesión colectiva de yoga con espectaculares vistas del amanecer y la Torre de Londres de fondo.

En la City, se instaló un laberinto de setos en Cheapside y un escenario con energía solar para celebrar un festival en el Distrito Financiero. Adultos y niños también pudieron competir en karts, una oportunidad única en plena Square Mile.

El objetivo de un día como este, es crear conciencia sobre el cambio climático y presentar alternativas a los ciudadanos. Otra de los propósitos es unir a las distintas comunidades, permitiendo el uso y disfrute de las distintas áreas de la capital.

En la actualidad, Londres es la cuarta ciudad más contaminada del mundo, lo que contribuye a generar

alrededor de nueve mil (9.000) muertes prematuras al año.

Otras ciudades del mundo también organizan días anuales con este mismo carácter y eventos similares en poblaciones como Yakarta - capital de Indonesiay Vancouver, en Canadá.

El objetivo del alcalde londinense es conseguir que el 80% de todos los transportes diarios en la ciudad de Londres se realicen con transportes sostenibles en el año 2041 y, con suerte, estos Días sin Coche animarán a los londinenses a a “reimaginar” una ciudad sin vehículos cambiando sus rutinas de movilidad por acudir caminando. en bicicleta o en transporte público. Con estas fórmulas, a largo plazo, se mejorará la calidad del aire y las condiciones de salud en la capital, además de reducir las emisiones de dióxido de carbono.

The world’s first vessel powered by hydrogen and other renewable energies is on its final leg of its European Tour, having already travelled 29,000 kilometres and stopped at 25 countries over the last two years.

With a further 4-year journey ahead, the Toyota sponsored Energy Observer catamaran began its world tour in 2017, setting sail from France. It aims to visit a total of 50 countries and 101 ports over its 6-year expedition.

This exciting and specially adapted race boat is essentially a floating laboratory, crewed by 12 sailors, engineers and creatives. The team’s mission is to test and optimise the technology onboard, to inspire the use and creation of sustainable energy solutions and to prove that an ecological transition is underway.

Completely energy self-sufficient, it uses a range of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and wave-generated power.

When power from these renewable sources runs low, hydrogen stored onboard is used to fuel the vessel. The hydrogen is produced ‘on the go’ and is created onboard through the demineralisation of seawater. The treated water is then passed through an electrolyser to separate the hydrogen and oxygen elements.

The hope is that the use of combined renewables and hydrogen can be up-scaled and used to power international commercial shipping. And although there are several challenges associated with hydrogen power such as storage issues and the cost of production, it is an inexhaustible source of energy, that when produced with renewables, is completely clean.

The shipping industry is currently one of the world’s biggest polluters, producing approximately one billion tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. If no action is taken, emissions from shipping are expected to rise 50 to 250% by 2050.

Air quality in the Bay of Gibraltar also suffers considerably due to high levels of shipping in the area and is considered to be one of the biggest polluters in the Campo.

The Energy Observer mission is proof that with commitment, investment and drive, new technologies can advance and hopefully bring about a rapid shift from fossil fuels to carbon-free energy.

El primer barco del mundo impulsado por hidrógeno El primer buque del mundo propulsado por hidrógeno y otras energías, está en la fase final de su gira europea, después de recorrer veintinueve mil kilómetros (29.000 km) y haber recalado en veinticinco durante los últimos dos años.

La embarcación es autosuficiente por completo, utilizando energías renovables las energías solar, eólica y undimotriz.

Cuando la energía de estas fuentes renovables se agota, el hidrógeno almacenado a bordo se utiliza para alimentar la embarcación. El hidrógeno se produce ‘sobre la marcha’ y se desmineraliza a bordo, a través de la electrólisis que separa hidrógeno y oxígeno.

La esperanza es la ampliación de combinar el uso de energías renovables e hidrógeno para poder realizar envíos comerciales internacionales. Cierto que existen algunos desafíos con el almacenamiento del hidrógeno y el coste de la producción, pero es una fuente de energía limpia que puede producirse con la energías renovables.

En la actualidad, el transporte marítimo es uno de los mayores contaminantes en nuestros mares, produciendo aproximadamente mil millones de toneladas de emisiones de CO2 anualmente. Si no se toman medidas, las previsiones son un aumento entre un 50% y un 250% para el año 2050.

Nuestra bahía, sufre considerablemente esta contaminación de buques, dado el área de envíos comerciales en El Estrecho y la Bahía.

La misión de Energy Observer, es una prueba fehaciente de que con compromiso, inversión e impulso, las nuevas tecnologías pueden avanzar y, con suerte, provocar un cambio rápido en el uso de los combustibles fósiles hacia las energías libres de CO2.

Bamboo Toothbrushes. An easy way to replace plastic in your life All our family have enjoyed this one and it’s such an easy switch to make. After trying a few different bamboo toothbrushes on the market, we settled on these from Hydrophil: a water neutral, vegan and fair company with 10% of their profit going to Viva Con Agua, a non-profit organisation helping people get access to clean drinking water and sanitation worldwide.

LOS STRAVAGANT3S Environmental commitment and vibrant music of the south Compromiso ambiental y música vibrante del sur Alfredo Valencia (Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción)

The Strvagant3s are an instrumental music trio formed in June 2010 and unified completely, in terms of the full formation of its members, in 2013.

Having come from different musical groups of the Campo de Gibraltar such as: Cai-manes, Paan (Pedro González, drums: rock, funk and blues). K’ostativa, Back Door (Chico Andrades, guitar: grunge, funk and rock), or Dead Stoned, Vitiko Latin Jazz Quartet (Luis Lirio, bassist: rock, soul, jazz) and influenced by multiple styles, they understand music in a peculiar and different way, away from the typical clichés, but upheld by a high level of perpetual compositional inquisitiveness and an integrity that is absolute, robust and uncompromising, in which they also choose to “subversively” add, in a very personal way, themes from different styles, groups and authors, stamping them with their own particular “hallmark” and musical personality.

Then in 2016 they decided to release their first album, which they titled “LABIOS CHUMBEROS”.

An album comprised of twelve tracks dedicated to the region in which they live, and in which each of the titles tries to capture a faithful reflection of the current social situation of the area. Stravagantr3s collaborates with Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción, in support and as a spokesperson for different campaigns, activities and demonstrations organised by the environmental organisation. With all kinds of contributions through their music such as: SOS Sierra Carbonera, providing videos in support of afforestation and encouraging citizens to take part throughout the month of November 2016.

And for each and every one of the campaigns they have contributed photos and videos with different messages of support and outreach; namely: Stop Nuclear Submarine campaigns and other large scale efforts, as well as raising funds for a trip to Brussels to address environmental issues in the region of the Campo de Gibraltar.

Twelve songs with touches of protest, romance and melancholy, with some tinges of environmentalism (Valdevaqueros: track number 10 of the album) and in which a multitude of styles are fused together gliding over an eclectic terrain, and as such obtaining excellent reviews and critiques on a national level, on both specialist music websites and magazines.

And in 2019, they launched their second work: IN THE CITY. A musical offering in the purest ‘stravagante’ style that moves between funk, funk-rock, funk-jazz, blues-rock, etc.

A work in which they have decided to explore different musical variations, permeating with ideas and a clear intent, which is already embodied in their CD track listing, to put something as prevalent as life and diversity in cities back on the table, and in general in to the current society in which we live.

(In track number 5, Wa ha, it highlights the oases that parks can generate in cities).

Eleven songs that invite you to immerse yourself in music that is purely instrumental, in which its members demonstrate that they possess an extensive musical background. Themes that pay homage to those who have inspired them personally and musically, which once again clearly shows the consistence of their compositional inquisitiveness, their experience and their eagerness to offer something different in the current and broad panorama of music.

K’ostativa, Back Door (Chico Andrades, guitarra : grunge, funk y rock), o Dead Stoned, Vitiko Latin Jazz Quartet (Luis Lirio, bajista: rock, soul, jazz) e influenciados por múltiples estilos entienden la música de manera peculiar y diferente, alejada de los típicos clichés, pero sostenido por una alta inquietud compositiva y por un directo íntegro, sólido y contundente, en el que también se deciden a “subversionar” de manera muy personal temas de distintos estilos, grupos y autores, imprimiéndoles su particular “sello” y personalidad musical.

Doce canciones con toques reivindicativos, románticos y melancolicos, con más de un tinte ecologista (Valdevaqueros corte número 10 del disco) y en los que se fusionan multitud de estilos en los que se deslizan por terrenos eclécticos, obteniendo del mismo inmejorables reseñas y criticas a nivel nacional, tanto en webs como en revistas especializadas en música.

En este 2019, lanzan su segundo trabajo: IN THE CITY. Una propuesta musical al más puro estilo stravagantero que se mueve entre el funk, funk- rock,

funk- jazz, blues- rock, etc. Un trabajo en el que se deciden a explorar diferentes variantes musicales e impregnado de sugerencias con el claro intento, ya plasmado en la tracklist del CD, de poner sobre el tapete algo tan presente como la vida y la diversidad en la ciudad y en general, (en el corte número 5, Waha, señala los oasis que se generan el las ciudades; los parques) en la actual sociedad en la que vivimos.

Once canciones que invitan a sumergirse en la música puramente instrumental y en las que sus componentes demuestran que gozan de un profundo bagaje musical.Temas que albergan homenajes a los que les han inspirado personal y musicalmente, y que dejan de nuevo clara constancia de su inquietud compositiva, de su experiencia, y de las muchas ganas de ofrecer algo diferente en el actual y amplio panorama de la música.

What? Paper pollutes and causes the loss of forests? Of course it does, but is digital production more sustainable and environmentally friendly?

This question wouldn’t seem out of place if we knew that the one billion daily searches on Google have the same energy expenditure impact as that which is produced by more than forty thousand cars, or if we discovered that in the US there are seven thousand companies with servers occupying the space equivalent to six football fields, or that the internet uses 1.5% of the electricity consumption of that very same country, more than triple compared to ten years ago.

We should also remember that these computer centres emit more CO2 than countries such as Argentina or the Netherlands, and that it is estimated that by 2020 they will be more polluting than the aviation industry. Not to mention the high cost of the environmental impact of digital production, as well as the slave labour conditions in which those who extract certain minerals such as coltan work in.

And there is more obscure data that is just as illuminating: the companies that manage the media are

Esta pregunta estaría fuera de lugar si supiéramos que los mil millones de búsquedas diarias en Google tienen el mismo impacto de gasto energético que el producido por más de cuarenta mil coches, o si descubrimos que en los EEUU existen siete mil empresas con servidores ocupando el espacio equivalente a seis campo de fútbol, o que internet consume el 1,5% del consumo eléctrico de ese país, más del triple de hace diez años. No hay que olvidar que estos centros de computación emiten más CO2 que países como Argentina u Holanda y que se estima que para el 2020 serán más contaminantes que la industria de la aviación. Por no hablar del elevado coste en impacto medioambiental de la producción digital y las condiciones de esclavitud en la que trabajan los que extraen determinados minerales como el coltán. Sigo con algunos datos tan ocultos como esclarecedores: las empresas que gestionan los medios de comunicación son los responsables del dos por ciento de la contaminación

Another shocking fact, according to McAfee, the electricity needed to distribute spam mail is similar to that produced by three million cars. These points that I am referencing form only a tiny part of all the information that we are able to access, if you know where to look. But since I do not want to make for bitter reading, I will move away from this devastating data and offer you a less assertive vision, one that is often very misunderstood, about paper production.

For paper to be labeled ‘ecological’ it must be manufactured to a high standard of environmental requirements.

Its production is subject to strict criteria of sustainability and minimising the impact on natural habitats. The use of chlorine in gas form is avoided as it is highly polluting, with other bleaching agents used instead, such as chlorine dioxide (ECF paper: Elemental chlorine-free), or oxygen, ozone or other agents, (TCF paper: Totally chlorine-free). Other factors such as water and atmospheric emission levels are also taken into account, as well as waste management.

The cultivation of paper production plantations and the reforestation of green areas to produce the necessary raw materials are having a hugely positive impact on sustainability on many levels. Fine hardwoods such as oak, beech or holm oak, are never used, but fast-growing species such as eucalyptus are used for production. Additionally, the hundreds of thousands of hectares that make up these plantations absorb a large amount of CO2, approximately 7.5 million tonnes per year. Thanks to this activity, forests in Europe are growing.

Otro dato estremecedor, según McAfee, la electricidad necesaria para distribuir el correo no deseado (spam) es parecida a la que producen tres millones de coches. Y solo estoy haciendo referencia a una ínfima parte de todas las informaciones a las que podrás acceder si sabes buscar, y como no deseo amargarles la lectura, paso de estos demoledores datos y voy a ofreceros a una visión menos agresiva pero también llena de malentendidos sobre la producción del papel.

Para que un papel se denomine ecológico debe haberse fabricado con un alto nivel de exigencias de respeto al medio ambiente. Su producción se rige por criterios de sostenibilidad y minimizando el impacto sobre los hábitats naturales. Se evita utilizar el cloro en forma de gas ya que es altamente contaminante y se usan otros blanqueantes, como el dióxido de cloro (papeles ECF: libres de cloro elemental) o el oxígeno, el ozono u otros (papeles TCF: totalmente libres de cloro). También se tienen en cuenta otros factores como los niveles de emisiones al agua y a la atmósfera, así como el tratamiento de los residuos.

El cultivo de plantaciones para el papel y la reforestación de zonas verdes con el fin de obtener la materia prima están teniendo un enorme impacto positivo en materia de sostenibilidad a muchos niveles. Nunca se utilizan maderas nobles como el roble, las hayas o las encinas, estos cultivos están formados por especies de rápido crecimiento como el eucalipto. Además los cientos de miles de hectáreas de estas plantaciones absorben una gran cantidad de CO2, cerca de 7,5 millones de toneladas al año. Gracias a esta actividad los bosques en Europa están creciendo.

Coalición Climática: cumplir con todos los puntos de la petición, abordando con urgencia la responsabilidad de Gibraltar en las emisiones de carbono para cumplir con su declaración de emergencia actuando sobre la contaminación, los residuos, las energías, transporte y desarrollo.

Sin plásticos: ni biodegradables ni compostables porque no hay evidencia científica, hasta la fecha, que respalde la sostenibilidad de estos productos.

Fin a los plásticos de un solo uso: son innecesarios. Hay que implicarse en la transición completa hacia productos cien por cien sostenibles.

Morocco’s belief in the strength of pluralism has energized me and shown me that difference can serve as a strength for any country, whether it is religious or secular, large or small, developed or developing.

I was told that there are spiritual answers to the question, “Why Morocco?”—every person has a story to explain why they are in this country. The hospitality, emphasis on community, and religious practice are only a few of the reasons Moroccans and visitors have provided. While personal narratives and my own experience have intertwined to affirm this point, so do the tenants of community and participatory development that I have witnessed as an intern at the High Atlas Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to local initiatives that community beneficiaries determine and manage.

My first week in Morocco, after traveling toward the Amazigh village of Akrich, we stopped at a tree nursery. The seemingly small plot of pomegranate and fig saplings is the backdrop to a linkage of cultural cooperation. While Jewish pilgrims visit the mausoleum of Rabbi Raphael Hacohen year after year, a Muslim man, Abderrahim Beddah, serves as the caretaker of the land. This relationship helps the High Atlas Foundation engage a women’s cooperative in the neighboring village. Initiatives are interconnected.

Now these multicultural nurseries are receiving government support. The National Initiative for Human Development has provided land-assessments to monitor the viability of an organic fruit tree nursery near the mausoleum of Rabbi David-Ou-Moshe in the Ourzazate province. They will begin implementing a project that will generate more than one-million trees over five years.

Sustainable development was created through, and continues to depend on, interfaith partnerships.

If Beddah did not share the story of Jews crying on the journey to visit their saint and express his deep appreciation for their faith, then this partnership would be unlikely. However, the investment Moroccans make when they support their neighbors is a testament to development that depends on pluralism.

This concept resurfaced in a new friendship. The Ministry in Charge of Moroccans Living Abroad and

La creencia en el pluralismo reinante en Marruecos, me ha fortalecido, demostrándome que la diferencia puede servir como empuje para cualquier país, se rija por motivos religiosos o seculares, sea grande o pequeño, se encuentre desarrollado en vías de ello.

A la pregunta de... “¿Por qué Marruecos?”, me dicen que existe una respuesta espiritual. Cada persona tiene su historia para argumentar el por qué de su estancia en este país. La hospitalidad, la comunidad y la práctica religiosa son solo algunas de las razones enumeradas. Si las historias personales y mi propia experiencia se han conjugado para confirmar estas puntualizaciones, también suman los vecinos y la participación de la que he sido testigo como invitada en la Fundación High Atlas, una organización sin ánimo de lucro dedicada a iniciativas locales.

Mi primera semana en Marruecos, después de viajar hacia la aldea amazigh (bereber) de Akrich, nos detuvimos en un vivero. Una pequeña parcela de granados e higueras pero, que en realidad, es un vínculo de cooperación cultural donde mientras los peregrinos judíos visitan el mausoleo del rabino Raphael Hacohen año tras año, un hombre musulmán -Abderrahim Beddah- se ocupa del cuidado de la tierra y a compás, la Fundación High Atlas involucra a una cooperativa de mujeres de la aldea vecina. Iniciativas interconectadas.

En la actualidad, estos viveros multiculturales reciben apoyo gubernamental marroquí. La Iniciativa Nacional para el Desarrollo Humano, ha evaluado las tierras para conocer la viabilidad de una producción de fruta orgánica, cerca del mausoleo del rabino David-Ou-Moshe en la provincia de Ourzazate. Aquí, comenzará un proyecto que generará más de un millón de árboles en cinco años.

El desarrollo sostenible, se creó a través de asociaciones interreligiosas y de ellas sigue dependiendo. Migration Affairs - in cooperation with the Association of Friends of the Jewish Museum - fund to bring Jewish people with Moroccan heritage back to discover their roots, meet government and religious leaders, and encourage local investment.

The High Atlas Foundation interns were invited to attend a shabbat dinner during the program for these Moroccan-Jews, and it was at that dinner that my observations were confirmed. I met a woman who has grown up in France, but her parents were from Agadir, Morocco. This was the first time she traversed the site of her great-great-grandparents’ graves and engaged with her heritage. We got to talking about religious coexistence and respect. She put it quite simply—“in Morocco, Jews and Muslims are first Moroccan. They live well together because their identity is placed in the fact that they are neighbors.”

She told me she believed that allegiance should be first to one’s country and then to religion, at least in how it is outwardly expressed. We both agreed that country needs to be respected…humanity needs to be respected.

Conocí a una mujer que creció en Francia, pero sus padres eran de Agadir -Marruecos-. Era la primera ocasión en la que visitaba las tumbas de sus tatarabuelos y se comprometió con su legado.

Hablamos de convivencia religiosa y respeto. Lo explicaba así: “en Marruecos, los judíos y los musulmanes son los primeros marroquíes. Conviven, porque su respeto se basa en el hecho de que son vecinos”. Me dijo que creía que la lealtad debería primero, al país propio y luego, a la religión, como mínimo en la respuesta que externalizamos.

Acordamos que el país necesita ser respetado. La humanidad, necesita ser respetada.

foundational documents. Development requires all parties, faiths, and populations of Morocco. I have seen this visiting a women’s cooperative where dialogue and decision making are priorities. I have seen this in visiting the grave of a venerated Jewish saint, guarded by a Muslim. I have seen this in the logistical processes that allow for the purchasing of carbon credits and maintenance of olive, walnut, and carob farms.

In 2008, King Mohammed VI announced a vision for Morocco in which “culture serves as a driving force for development as well as a bridge for dialogue.”

Moroccans are stepping up to the plate, imagining and wrestling to manifest this vision. The country’s potential should serve as an example. But we must not forget that there are villages still plagued by diarrhea, girls not in school, and trees left uplanted.

These examples remind us that although potential is not lacking, resources are forever necessary. Volunteers should never back down in fear of not doing enough. Passion for understanding others, learning a new language, or living immersed in a beautiful expression of religion should be motivation to bring you to Morocco. Finding or supporting organizations like the High Atlas Foundation is integral to this vision.

My spiritual explanation to “Why Morocco?” has come to rest in my hope for this pluralistic and collaborative future of development. Creating cooperatives, living together, and working toward a common goal or vision is very “Moroccan.” But it is also very “human.” I wonder how life would look if other countries began to call for pluralistic-driven development in their constitutions, laws, policies, and institutions?

En 2008, el rey Mohammed VI anunció un proyecto para Marruecos donde, “la cultura será el impulso para el desarrollo y el puente para el diálogo”. Los marroquíes están intensificando las bases, luchando para que esta opción sea primordial. El potencial del país debería servir de ejemplo, sin olvidar que aún hay aldeas plagadas de diarreas, niñas que no asisten a la escuela y árboles plantados. Ejemplos que ponen de manifiesto que, aunque no falta potencial, los recursos son necesarios. El temor a que los actos no sean suficientes, no deben hacer retroceder a los voluntarios. Entender otras culturas, aprender un idioma, sumergirse en una expresión religiosa, debería ser más que una motivación para llevarte a Marruecos. Apoyar organizaciones como la Fundación High Atlas es parte integrante de esta inmersión.

Mi explicación espiritual a “¿Por qué Marruecos?”, me llena de esperanza para un futuro lleno de colaboración y desarrollo plural. Crear cooperativas, vivir juntos y trabajar hacia una meta común es muy “marroquí” y muy “humano”. Me pregunto, ¿cómo sería la vida si otros países exigieran en sus constituciones, leyes, políticas e instituciones un desarrollo basado en la pluralidad ?

Let’s Clean Up the World

In late September, after a full few weeks of global environmental summits and protests, the annual Clean Up the World campaign returned to Gibraltar for a successful 15th consecutive year.

The environment is currently at the forefront of news headlines around the globe. We regularly hear about how much rubbish we produce, where it ends up and the awful implications it has on ecosystems.

When faced with so much information and statistics, it is so easy to become somewhat apathetic or daunted by it all. But the reality is that billions of people around the world use vast amounts of disposable items every year. It all has to end up somewhere, and the world is rapidly running out of space to put it all, with a lot of it ending up on our streets, beaches and green areas.

So each year, thousands of volunteers from around the world come together for Clean Up the World, a day where communities take action to combat waste and plastic pollution in their local areas.

The campaign was established in 1993 and offers support and guidance to groups, businesses and schools, together with local governments to actively engage in local clean up and environmental activities.

Since they started, Clean Up the World has engaged an estimated 35 million volunteers across 133 countries, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.

Their vision is to inspire a billion people across all continents to tread lightly, clean up and conserve the planet.

Organised locally by the Environmental Safety Group, Gibraltar has been actively involved with Clean Up the World for the last 15 years. This year was no exception, with a fantastic turnout of over 400 volunteers who helped clean up various locations across Gibraltar.

OTWO magazine also took part, with three of us making our way up to Lathbury Barracks on the morning of the 27th September with litter pickers and waste disposal bags at the ready.

When we first arrived, the amount of litter in the area wasn’t immediately apparent. But not long after we had scrambled further up onto the dirt slopes and started combing through the thick plant growth, we quickly realised that it was everywhere.

Cans, bottles, crisp packets, dried up wet wipes, polystyrene, plastic bags embedded into the dirt, the more we looked, the more we found.

But even though the endless amount of litter buried beneath the soil and caught deep within dense foliage seemed insurmountable, we still managed to fill several generously sized bags with small to medium pieces of rubbish, mostly made up of plastic.

Throughout the day, 400 volunteers of all different ages, spread across 26 teams cleaned up green areas, cliff sites and seafronts and underwater spaces such as around Rosia Bay. Specialist teams also helped to tackle sites that are only accessible by boat or by abseiling or diving.

By the end of the day, around 12 truck trips were required to remove the piles of rubbish, not including larger items that remained to be collected.

The Environmental Safety Group and Clean Up the World, hope that cleanups such as these raise awareness of how much waste we produce and its environmental impact, and also inspire local communities to get involved.

And awareness is growing. The impact of global waste, particularly plastic, is increasingly becoming part of the collective consciousness. However, so much more has to change to ensure that the rate at which we consume, and then dispose of single-use products, does not keep rising.

As mentioned above, the figures are truly overwhelming. Based on estimates, the world’s cities generate 1.3 billion tonnes of waste annually.

With the current urbanisation and population growth rate, that number is estimated to rise to 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025.

The world is still plastic dependent and its extremely hard to avoid. But with more information about the impact that it has on marine life, ecosystems and even the part it plays in climate change, is pushing more and more businesses and individuals to reduce the amount of waste they produce and use.

Initiatives like Clean Up the World are unfortunately very much needed at the moment. That being said, it was great to see so many people willing to sacrifice some of their spare time to give back to the community and help make the world we live in that bit better.

¡Limpiemos el mundo!

A finales de septiembre, tras la resaca de protestas y cumbres medioambientales a nivel mundial, la campaña anual Clean Up the World regresó a Gibraltar por decimoquinto año consecutivo.

En la actualidad, el medio ambiente ocupa los titulares de los medios alrededor del mundo Con regularidad nos reiteran la cantidad de desperdicios que producimos, dónde acaban y las horribles efectos que causan en el ecosistema.

Regularmente escuchamos sobre la cantidad de basura que producimos, dónde termina y las terribles implicaciones que tienen para los ecosistemas.

Cuando nos enfrentamos a tanta información y estadísticas, es muy fácil volverse algo apático o por el contrario, intimidado por todo. Aunque, la realidad, es que miles de millones de personas en toda la geografía mundial, usan cantidades ingentes de artículos desechables anualmente. Todos los desechos terminan ocupando un espacio y el mundo, tienen el espacio limitado, por lo que parte de los desperdicios van quedando en nuestras calles, playas y zonas verdes.

Anualmente, miles de voluntarios se unen para la campaña Clean Up the World, marcando un día donde las distintas entidades y organizaciones, toman medidas conjuntamente para combatir en sus áreas cercanas de actuación, la presencia de desperdicios y la presencia de plásticos con la contaminación que conllevan.

Esta campaña se inició en 1993, ofreciendo apoyo y orientación a grupos, empresas y escuelas, colaborando con las administraciones y gabinetes de gobierno local, para que se involucren de forma activa en acciones de limpieza y de mejora medio ambiental.

Desde sus comienzos, Clean Up the World ha involucrado a unos treinta y cinco millones de voluntarios en ciento treinta y tres países, convirtiéndose en una de las campañas generalistas y para el cuidado medioambiental con mayor volumen a nivel mundial.

Su objetivo es inspirar a mil millones de personas a cuidar, limpiar y conservar el planeta, en cada rincón de cualquiera de los continentes .

Gibraltar ha participado activamente en Clean Up the World durante los últimos 15 años, organizándose a nivel local por el Grupo de Seguridad Ambiental. Este año, la participación fantástica con más de cuatrocientos voluntarios que ayudaron a limpiar distintos espacios en toda la ciudad.

La revista OTWO también quiso formar parte de esta campaña y tres personas de nuestro equipo estuvimos en los Cuarteles de Lathbury el pasado 27 de septiembre retirando basuras y eliminando desechos.

A primera hora, no parecía que la cantidad de basura acumulada en dicha área fuese destacable.

AUnque, una vez subimos la ladera, comenzamos a peinar las zonas arbóreas y comprobamos que los

restos de todo tipo abundaban en cualquier parte.

Latas, botellas, paquetes de snacks, toallitas húmedas secas, corchos, bolsas de plástico enterradas, cuanto más observábamos, mayor número de porquerías localizabamos.

La cantidad de restos acumulados bajo la espesura de los hierbajos parecía interminable, y de difícil acceso, por encontrarse casi enterrada, logramos llenar varias varias bolsas de gran tamaño con desperdicios de todos los tamaños, muchos de ellos de materiales plásticos.

Un total de veintiséis equipos, formados por cuatrocientos voluntarios de todas las edades, se organizaron a lo largo de todo el día para limpiar zonas verdes, acantilados, litoral y espacios submarinos en los alrededores de Bahía Rosia. gracias a la participación de equipos de especialistas, se pudieron alcanzar localizaciones donde es imprescindible hacer uso de una embarcación, submarinismo o deslizarse en rappel.

Finalizada la jornada, se necesitaron una docena de viajes de camión para poder retirar la elevada cantidad, sin contar con los enseres de gran tamaño que quedan por retirar.

El Grupo de Seguridad Ambiental y Clean Up the World esperan que este tipo de limpiezas generen conciencia sobre la cantidad de desechos que producimos y el impacto ambiental que causan, a la vez que contribuyan a que las

distintas comunidades locales se involucren en ellas.

Y la sensibilización está aumentando. El impacto de los desperdicios plásticos a nivel general se está convirtiendo en conciencia colectiva. Pero, tienen que cambiar muchos hábitos aún para que el volumen del consumo de plásticos desechables, de un solo uso, no siga en aumento.

Las cifras, son abrumadoras. Según los cálculos estimados, la población mundial genera mil trescientos millones (1.300.000.000) de toneladas de residuos cada año. De seguir en esta proporción el crecimiento de núcleos urbanos y el aumento de población mundial, para el 2025 las cantidades crecerían hasta los dos mil millones (2.200.000.000) de toneladas. En la actualidad, elplástico es dificil de evitar, es mucha la dependencia de este material.

Pero, si crece la información sobre el impacto que produce en la vida marina, los ecosistemas e incluso, el papel que juega en el cambio climático, se podrá convencer a más empresas y personas de la necesidad de disminuir su consumo.

De momento, lamentablemente, debemos continuar con iniciativas como Clean Up the World. Comenado todo esto, solo nos queda añadir, que fue genial ver a tanta gente dispuesta a sacrificar su tiempo libre para contribuir a mejorar los espacios comunes y aportar su granito de arena para mejorar el mundo en el que vivimos.

Throughout the week of the 20th - 27th September, millions of people across the globe took part in what organisers called “the biggest climate mobilisation in history”, with an estimated 7.6 million people in 185 countries marching in the youth-led Global Climate Strike.

For the first time since the student-led strikes began, adults were called upon to take part. Scientists, trade unions, businesses, celebrities and millions of students and parents from around the world, came together to call for more action to be taken by governments to halt the climate crisis.

The biggest demonstrations took place on the 20th September with over 4 million people marching in cities such as New York, London, Sydney, Nairobi and Bangkok. With Gibraltar and Spain also taking part.

The international Global Climate Strikes began in 2015 when an independent group of students organised the first School Strike for Climate. Held on the first day of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, the protests focused on three points: 100% clean energy; keeping fossil fuels in the ground and helping climate refugees. This first strike saw 50,000 students from 100 countries take part.

Then, on 20th August 2018, a young girl by the name of Greta Thunberg decided to sit outside the Riksgad of Sweden and not to attend school until the 2018 Swedish General Elections. Holding a sign that read “School Strike for Climate”, she announced her demands for the Swedish government to reduce carbon emissions as per the Paris Agreement.

The day before the general elections, she declared that she would continue to strike every Friday until the Swedish Government met these demands, which spread globally as the “Fridays for Future” campaign.

Following the elections, she began to attend demonstrations across Europe and has since been invited to speak at Davos, the European Economic and Social Committee and the United States Congress.

Greta has now become one of the seminal faces and voices of climate change activism. Her fierce commitment and direct speeches have launched her into the global spotlight. As such, earlier this year she was featured on the cover of Time magazine which named her a “next-generation leader”.

Her influence is so widespread that parts of the

media have coined her impact on the climate change movement ‘the Greta effect’.

With the United Nations describing climate change as the “defining issue of our time”, the strikes were held to coincide with the UN Climate Action Summit on 23rd September. Greta made headlines when she made the transatlantic trip to attend the summit in a carbon-neutral racing yacht.

The 20th September kicked off with massive gatherings on the Pacific islands. Islands such as Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji all called for more action to prevent rising sea levels. The small atoll states of Tuvalu and Kiribati also took part; with students grasping placards bearing the phrase “We are not sinking, we are fighting”. These small islands are some of the most vulnerable places in the world to the effects of climate change.

From New York, Greta hailed the scenes in Australia as “setting the standard”. Hundreds of towns and cities held rallies with an estimated 350,000 people across the country taking part. In Sydney and Melbourne, tens of thousands took to the streets, likely the vastest public demonstrations in the country since the protests held against the 2003 Iraq War. In Asia; hundreds marched across Japan and at the Environment ministry building in Bangkok, Thai protesters dropped to the ground feigning death and demanding government action on climate issues.

Marches in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, among other big cities in India saw 13,000 people protest across the country.

In Afghanistan, 100 young people marched in the capital Kabul. Afghan security forces were deployed to protect the group, which was led by young women from a local climate action organisation called Oxygen.

Strikes also mobilised across multiple countries in Africa, with 50,000 youth gathered in Luanda the capital of Angola, one of the biggest such protests ever seen on the African continent. Hundreds also rallied in Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal and a total of 5000 people were estimated to have taken part across South Africa.

Europe held some of the biggest protests of the week, with a staggering 1.4 million people joining demonstrations in cities around Germany, with various companies such as Flixbus and GLS bank supporting their workers to take part in the strikes.

Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Glasgow and

Brighton were just some of the cities in the United Kingdom to march. A total of 500,000 people from schools, businesses and environmental organisations across the UK came together at over 200 events across the country.

A hundred thousand people joined the rally in London with UK businesses such as Lush Cosmetics and outdoor clothing company Patagonia closing their shops and offices in solidarity for the strikes.

In Gibraltar, the OTWO magazine team joined 250 parents, students, young children and members of environmental groups on a march through Main Street, which ended at No. 6 Convent Place. There, a signed petition was delivered to the Environment Minister, Dr John Cortes, demanding the implementation of an independent climate body with a cross-party agenda.

The march and petition were organised by the local group; Coalition for Climate Action in support of Parents for Future Worldwide. The group is a collective of local environmental organisations including The Nautilus Project, the Environmental Safety Group and Sustainable Gibraltar. Describing

the purpose of an independent climate body, Janet Howitt of ESG explained that “we feel that politics often get in the way of any one party rolling out a long term [climate] plan... we want to depoliticise the environment and be able to plan 5, 10, 15 years ahead because climate change and the emergency surrounding all of these issues demand it”.

Spain saw massive marches on both the 20th and 27 September, with 500,000 taking part in various cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Zaragoza and Valladolid. Spain’s largest electrical utility company; Endesa, announced plans to stop operating all coal thermal power plants on the Peninsula, including those of Litoral, in Almería, and As Pontes, La Coruña.

In Andalucia, there were also protests held in Malaga, Cadiz, Estepona, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera.

Organisers in the United States announced that over a thousand rallies took place across all 50 states. New York saw the highest numbers, with 250,000 joining the protests. Public school authorities in New York, Boston and Chicago allowed students to skip school for the strikes and many businesses closed their doors to join the protests.

Greta took part in the New York demonstrations and addressed the crowds to rapturous roars and cheers. “This is an emergency. Our house is on fire,” she declared. “We will do everything in our power to stop this crisis from getting worse.”

Just a few days after the first protests, the United Nations Climate Action Summit was held in New York City, with 60 of the largest member states announcing they were working on or exploring plans to reduce greenhouse gas to virtually zero. However, many critics fear that these commitments are not drastic enough to ensure global temperatures do not rise above an irreversible tipping point.

In a powerful and passionate speech, Greta addressed the United Nations, calling out their lack of commitment and definitive action, declaring bluntly, “you are failing us. But young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you, and if you choose to fail us, I say, we will never forgive you.”

The last year has seen awareness and frustrations with global governments growing, due to several sever global climate events making headlines across the globe.

Decades of climate change concerns have now culminated in a youth-led movement which is leading the charge for rapid and drastic climate action to be taken, proving that millions of people around the world are prepared for, and want, real change.

A lo largo de la semana del 20 al 27 de septiembre, millones de personas en todo el mundo participaron en la denominada “mayor movilización climática de la historia”, en la que se estima que alrededor de siete millones seiscientas mil personas, en ciento ochenta y cinco países, han participado en la Huelga Climática Mundial, liderada por los jóvenes.

Ha sido la primera ocasión, desde que los estudiantes iniciaron sus protestas, en la que han solicitado la participación de los adultos. La respuesta ha sido millones de padres y alumnos de todo el mundo, acompañados de científicos, sindicatos, empresas y celebridades... todos de la mano han pedido a los gobiernos que adopten medidas para frenar la crisis climática.

Más de cuatro millones de personas salieron a la calle el 20 de septiembre en Nueva York, Londres, Sidney, Nairobi y Bangkok siendo las manifestaciones más numerosas. A ellas se unieron ciudades españolas y Gibraltar.

Los paros por el clima a nivel mundial, arrancaron en 2015, cuando un grupo de estudiantes independientes organizaron la primera huelga escolar por el clima. Celebrada el primer día de las conferencias del Cambio Climático en la ONU, las protestas se centraron en tres puntos: energía 100% limpia, mantener en el subsuelo los combustibles fósiles y un marco de protección a los refugiados climáticos.

En esta primera huelga participaron cincuenta mil estudiantes de un centenar de países.

Con posterioridad, el 20 de agosto de 2018, una joven llamada Greta Thunberg decidió sentarse en los accesos del Riksdag de Suecia, sin asistir al colegio hasta la celebración de las elecciones suecas de ese mismo año. La estudiante portaba un cartel que decía “Huelga escolar por el clima”, a la vez que anunciaba sus demandas para que el gobierno sueco redujese las emisiones de carbono, a tenor del Acuerdo de París.

El día antes de las elecciones generales en su país, la joven declaró que cada viernes, hasta que el Gobierno sueco cumpliera con estas demandas, se pondría en huelga. Este movimiento se extendió mundialmente bajo la campaña “Viernes por el futuro”. Seguidamente, una vez celebradas las elecciones, Greta Thunberg, comenzó a asistir a manifestaciones por toda Europa, mientras era invitada a hablar en foros internacionales como Davos, el Comité Económico y Social Europeo y el Congreso de los Estados Unidos.

La joven Greta, se ha convertido en semilla, cara y voz del activismo por el cambio climático.

Su intenso compromiso y sus discursos directos, la han puesto en la línea de salida de la atención medioambiental mundial. Tanto es así, que a principios de año, apareció en la portada de la revista Time nombrandola, “líder de la próxima generación”.

Su influencia está tan extendida, que numerosos medios de comunicación han denominado el impacto de las declaraciones y acciones en la lucha por actuar contra el cambio climático de esta joven sueca, como “el efecto Greta”.

Con las Naciones Unidas describiendo el cambio climático como el “problema definitorio de nuestro tiempo”, las huelgas se llevaron a cabo para coincidir con la Cumbre de Acción Climática de la ONU el 23 de septiembre. Entre todo este trajín, Greta fue noticia cuando, para asistir a la cumbre americana, realizó su viaje en velero para evitar la emisión de dióxido de carbono.

El 20 de septiembre comenzó con reuniones masivas en las islas del Pacífico. Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papúa Nueva Guinea y Fiji pidieron más medidas para evitar la subida del nivel del mar. Otros pequeños estados como los atolones de Tuvalu y Kiribati, también participaron y los estudiantes portaban

pancartas que defendían: “No nos estamos hundiendo, estamos luchando”. Estas pequeñas islas son algunos de los lugares más vulnerables a los efectos del cambio climático, a nivel mundial.

Desde Nueva York, Greta elogió las escenas en Australia, “estableciendo estándares”. Centenares de poblaciones celebraron mítines, estimándose en trescientas cincuenta mil personas la participación activa a lo largo de todo el país. En Sydney y Melbourne, decenas de miles salieron a las calles, siendo con toda probabilidad las respuestas públicas más numerosas, desde que en 2003 los ciudadanos se echaron a las calles, para protestar por la Guerra de Irak.

Mientras, en el continente asiático, cientos de personas marcharon por Japón, y en el edificio del ministerio de Medio Ambiente en Bangkok, los manifestantes tailandeses cayeron al suelo fingiendo la muerte, y exigiendo la acción del gobierno sobre cuestiones climáticas.

Las marchas en Delhi, Mumbai y Kolkata, entre otras grandes ciudades de la India, mostraron a trece mil personas protestando a lo largo y ancho del país.

En Afganistán, un centenar de jóvenes salió a la calle en Kabul, mientras las fuerzas de seguridad se desplegaron para proteger al grupo que estaba dirigido por mujeres jóvenes pertenecientes a una organización local de acción climática, denominada Oxygen.

También África se movilizó con cincuenta mil jóvenes reunidos en Luanda, capital de Angola, una de las protestas de mayor envergadura vista en el continente africano. Mientras, en Kenia, Nigeria y Senegal se reunieron cientos de personas, estimándose la participación total en Sudáfrica en cinco mil manifestantes.

El viejo continente no defraudó, con una de las mayores protestas de la semana, un millón cuatrocientas mil personas salieron a las calles de Europa desde Alemania a Reino Unido. Compañías como Flixbus y el banco GLS, apoyaron a sus trabajadores para que asistieron a la huelga en varias ciudades alemanas.

Belfast, Edimburgo, Birmingham, Glasgow y Brighton fueron algunas de las ciudades británicas que se pusieron en marcha. Quinientas mil perso-

nas entre escolares, personal docente, empresas y organizaciones medioambientales en diversos rincones del Reino Unido, formaron parte de los más de dos centenares de eventos que recorrieron todo el país.

Cien mil personas en Londres de la mano de empresas como Lush Cosmetics y la empresa de ropa para actividades al aire libre, Patagonia, cerraron sus tiendas y oficinas para solidarizarse con la huelga.

El equipo de OTWO se unió en Gibraltar a los doscientos cincuenta padres, estudiantes, niños y miembros de grupos que luchan por el medio ambiente, durante la marcha que recorrió Main Street y que concluyó en el número 6 de la calle Convento.

En las dependencias gubernamentales, se entregó una petición firmada al Dr. John Cortés, Ministro de Medio Ambiente, en la que se exige la creación que exigía la implementación de un organismo climático independiente con una agenda multipartidista.

Marcha y manifiesto estuvieron organizadas por el grupo local Coalition for Climate Action, apoyando a Parents for Future Worldwide. Esta coalición está conformada por organizaciones ambientales locales, entre las que se encuentran el Proyecto Nautilus, el Grupo de Seguridad Ambiental y Gibraltar Sostenible. Al describir el propósito de un organismo climático independiente, Janet Howitt, de ESG, explicó, “sentimos que la política a menudo se interpone en el camino de cualquier partido que implemente un plan [climático] a largo plazo... queremos despolitizar el medio ambiente y poder planear con cinco, diez, quince años de anticipación, ya que el cambio climático y la emergencia que rodea a todos estos temas, lo exigen “.

En España fueron masivas las marchas de los días 20 y 27 de septiembre, con medio millón de participantes en ciudades como Madrid, Barcelona,​​ Granada, Zaragoza y Valladolid. Endesa, una de las empresas de suministro eléctrico de mayor calado en el territorio nacional, anunció que dejará de operar en las centrales térmicas de carbón peninsulares, incluyendo las del litoral almeriense, As Pontes y La Coruña. Los andaluces salieron a la calle en Málaga, Cádiz, Estepona, Sevilla y Jerez de la Frontera.

dounidenses, han confirmado que en EEUU fueron más de mil manifestaciones en los cincuenta estados miembros. Siendo la de la ciudad de New York una de las más numerosas con 250.000 personas.

Las autoridades de las escuelas públicas de Nueva York, Boston y Chicago fueron permisivos con las faltas lectivas para participar en las distintas manifestaciones y muchas empresas cerraron sus puertas para unirse a las protestas.

La joven activista Greta Thunberg, participó en las manifestaciones de Nueva York, dirigiendo a la multitud con gritos y vítores entusiastas. “Esto es una emergencia. Nuestra casa está en llamas”, declaró. “Haremos todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para evitar que esta crisis empeore”.

Días después de las primeras protestas, la ciudad de New York acogió la Cumbre de Acción Climática de las Naciones Unidas, en la que sesenta grandes estados anunciaron estar trabajando o explorando planes para reducir el efecto invernadero a casi cero. Aunque, muchos críticos temen que estos compromisos no sean lo suficientemente drásticos para garantizar que la temperatura global no supere un punto de inflexión irreversible.

La adalid de este cambio medioambiental exigido a nivel mundial, Greta, se dirigió a las Naciones Unidas con un discurso poderoso y apasionado, señalando la falta de compromiso y acción definitiva de los estados miembros, declarando sin rodeos, “nos están fallando. Los jóvenes están empezando a comprender vuestra traición. Las miradas de las nuevas generaciones están sobre ustedes y si deciden fallarnos, nunca lo perdonaremos”.

Este año ha sido testigo de la conciencia existente y de las frustraciones reinantes en los gobiernos de todo el mundo, debido a graves desastres climáticos que han sido noticia en todo el mundo.

Décadas de preocupación por el cambio climático, han culminado en estas últimas fechas en un movimiento liderado por jóvenes que ponen por bandera la necesidad de tomar medidas rápidas de forma drástica, dejando patente que son millones de personas en todo el mundo solicitando que quieren un cambio de estrategia real.

Tal y como Greta expresó a la multitud que gritaba en Nueva York: “haremos que nos escuchen. El cambio está en camino. Les guste o no.”

La asociación de Desarrollo y Estudios Marinos del Estrecho, habla con mayúsculas del Mar como Crecimiento Azul de Andalucía en general y el Campo de Gibraltar en particular “Pensar en Azul nos haría potenciar nuestro litoral más allá de la estacionalidad del turismo veraniego y habría que ponerse” Sentados frente al mar, quedamos con la presidenta de ADEME, Gema Rodríguez García, licenciada en ciencias del mar y plenamente convencida de la realidad que sería para la economía, el desarrollo y la expansión de un rincón como el Campo de Gibraltar, si las ganas, el esfuerzo y la organización de los trabajos entre profesionales y administración se centraran en un marco tan netamente rico como el Mar, el Parque Natural Del Estrecho, la Bahía y todo el salitre que nos rodea.

“Formación, profesionalidad e inversión” son las claves para que el desarrollo del Mar sea más que una realidad, un futuro real en Andalucía y el Campo de Gibraltar”, afirma la presidenta de ADEME antes de arrancar nuestra entrevista. ¿Por qué surge ADEME? La idea de asociarnos un grupo de locos convencidos de las posibilidades que nos ofrece el Azul que nos rodea, surge tras la celebración de las I Jornadas del Mar en La Línea. Conseguimos que una asociación de ámbito regional tuviese su sede en La Línea de la Concepción y el foco de atención por buenas noticias y por unas jornadas de calidad, nos diera la referencia de arranque más fructífera.

Hablar de “crecimiento azul” nos hizo recapacitar sobre el vacío en nuestra comarca de todo lo relacionado con el mar más allá de los deportes náuticos, En el Centro Andaluz de Estudios Marinos no estaba claro si se debía a la falta de conexión con Cádiz, falta de especialización o falta de interés. Las Jornadas del Mar demostraron que interés existía para dar cobertura no solo a proyectos locales, sino que podíamos abarcar a proyectos de la comarca, la provincia y la región andaluza. El Mar como referente para paliar las deficiencias de estudios, valoraciones, interpretaciones, posibilidades y proyectos.

Por esas lagunas nace ADEME y se organizan las II Jornadas del Mar en el Palacio de Congresos de La Línea con doble éxito que las del año anterior.

Se amplían los horizontes y a la Mancomunidad de Municipios se une la Diputación Provincial de Cádiz que de una primera tacada, nos incluye en el Plan de “Playas de Cádiz, Tesoro Natural” y concede a través de ADEME 124 contenedores de basura selectiva que a día de hoy se siguen usando en La Línea. ¿Se sienten arropados por la administración?

Desde el primer momento, la Mancomunidad mostró su interés a través de la delegada Marina García que puso en contacto a la asociación con el Instituto de Estudios Campogibraltareños y hay una relación continuada con Eduardo Briones apostando por llevar la oferta educativa al resto de colegios campogibraltareños.

También la Diputación de Cádiz y Maribel Peinado, como y Diputada del Área de Desarrollo Soste-

nible de la Diputación de Cádiz, se financia el Taller de Cosmética Natural de algas. El aprovechamiento cosmético de las algas de arribazón del Parque Natural Del Estrecho. Lociones capilares a base de algas recolectadas en La Caleta, (rugulopterix okamurae Pacífico). Un producto experimental que tiene como objetivo vislumbrar soluciones sostenibles para el problema de las grandes acumulaciones existentes en la zona este de la costa de Algeciras-Tarifa. Un proyecto de Facinas Entidad Local Autónoma con el apoyo del Ayuntamiento de Tarifa.

Posteriormente, no duda la administración en financiar los talleres de cosmética de algas de la oferta educativa del ayuntamiento linense, para alumnos de tercero de primaria de ocho centros de la localidad. En esta formación se conciencia a los más pequeños de las posibilidades de sus playas más allá del buceo, el turismo o la pesca. ¿Se os ve mentalizados del desarrollo y de la transversalidad de vuestra asociación?.

Una ventana de conciencia desde el mar a Andalucía, la comarca y La Línea. En estos meses, se ha visto entre las redes sociales y los medios de comunicación nacionales un poco más de conciencia azul debido al problema del alga invasora. Pero hay que ser realistas y reconocer que el problema no es la cantidad, es el por qué llegan a esta zona. Se conoce que la causa han sido las aguas de lastre de la flota asiática, similar a la llegada del mejillón cebra (por ejemplo).

Hay algas que conviven con las demás pero esta, ha desplazado a todo el fondo marino. Situaciones como esta, crean conciencia pero al final, seguimos siendo los cuatro de siempre. ¿Sería necesario la creación de una pirámide de prioridades al estilo de la existente para alimentarnos? ¿Una visual nos haría involucrarnos más en la realidad de nuestro Mar? En esa pirámide de prioridades, la educación sería la base y tiraríamos de abajo hacia arriba. Los pequeños son el futuro, son insistentes y saben convencer.

Suelo poner de ejemplo el caso de las “tallas mínimas”. Si un niño dice a su madre que no come pescados ni almejas tan pequeños, la mamá buscará cambiarlos. Si esto se multiplica por toda una clase, y así sucesivamente… fijo que las bancas de pescado irían tomando conciencia de la necesidad de

mantener la especie y devolver al mar la pesca que no alcance la talla.

Los padres también pueden aportar. Llevábamos años sin coquinas en las playas, en las orillas. Este año ha sido bestial su recuperación. Pero, si permitimos y enseñamos a los niños a sacar de “estrangis” las piezas pequeñas, no les quepa la menor duda que esa falta de conciencia del adulto se transmite al niño. Mal hecho. Por eso es importante que el niño aprenda en el colegio y sea quien llame la atención al mayor del mal ejemplo. enseña a tu hijo, a tu alumno la importancia de la repoblación. Aquí entran los principios de ADEME.

¿Por cosas así hemos perdido la idiosincrasia de poblaciones netamente pesqueras?

Por el abuso. Si esquilmas, acabas con la regeneración y con la concienciación de generaciones venideras. Implantar la conciencia marina, cuesta. ¿Pero en el norte no ocurre?

Porque en el sur el relevo generacional en la pesca no existe. Debido a la falta de formación, a la falta de oportunidades que hay, a la falta de profesionalidad.

Porque en el sur la pesca se relaciona un sector minoritario y discriminado, no como un sector primario y productivo. El técnico, el licenciado del mar, el oceanógrafo... Necesitamos una formación reglada que acondicione a los profesionales desde la Universidad a la Formación Profesional porque hay mucho que aportar y mucho que generar.

El Instituto de Formación Agraria y Pesquera en la provincia de Cádiz tiene cuatro institutos y ninguno nos pilla cerca a los campogibraltareños, así no se crean oportunidades.

Tenemos ganado, agricultura y pesca pero no la oportunidad de desarrollar ni tener relevo generacional

en estos sectores que son de calidad extraordinaria. ¿Cuantas Jornadas del Mar ya en su haber?

La primera bajo el epígrafe general “Un horizonte abierto al desarrollo local”. La segunda bajo el título “Crecimiento Azul: una oportunidad de futuro” y las terceras “Pesca: su pasado, presente y futuro”. ¿Habrá una cuarta?

Nos lo habíamos planteado en otro contexto, poniendo sobre la mesa una matriz DAFO sobre la profesión marítimo - pesquera. Tenemos Universidad Marítima en Cádiz, pero la parte pesquera y agrícola , donde tenemos muchísimas oportunidades en nuestra zona, está de capa caída. Incluso se sacaron los polígonos de acuicultura en nuestra comarca -que tenemos unos pocos- del programa provincial.

Hay mucho por hacer. Hay mucho por exigir.

En la zona de las marismas Cádiz se han aprovechado mucho los recursos naturales, como ejemplo el pescado de estero o las salinas.

A nivel administración deberíamos tener personal preparado y con ganas de hacer cosas más allá de una foto. Sabiendo trazar un plan, unos objetivos y unos plazos para realizarlo. ¿El litoral andaluz tiene mejor perspectiva?

Por la conciencia del mar que existe, si. Un ejemplo, Almería. Cuenta con asociaciones como “Del barco a la mesa” que te sirve el pescado en casa, organiza la compra on line... Esto tiene un nombre: ganas, sinergia, trabajo.

Una asociación como la nuestra, que ha nacido por amor al arte, necesita ser escuchada, acogida y apoyada, al meno en sus fundamentos y propuestas que se han demostrado que ponen en valor una realidad de prosperidad: el crecimiento Azul. ¿Que pide la presidenta de ADEME en este curso que empieza?

Que el crecimiento Azul se plantee como algo más allá de ver los cetáceos en el estrecho. Más allá del bañito veraniego, del deporte náutico o del turismo de temporada.

Le pido que la cultura del Crecimiento Azul esté presente todo el año tanto a nivel de nuestras aulas como a nivel administración y organización educación-profesional.

Si triunfa la conciencia Azul, triunfamos todos.

Pensemos en cualquier tonalidad de los Azules del Estrecho y nos irá mejor.

We had the pleasure of joining Stuart on another Ebike trip this week. Last time we didn’t finish the tour, but true to his word Stuart arranged this outing so that we could enjoy the whole experience.

This time we met at Cafe Fresco, together with my husband, Cameron, and his photographer friend, Juan. My husband had been hearing me ramble on about how cool these bikes were, and he couldn’t help but join in to see what all the fuss was about.

Stuart and his 4 amazing looking bikes were there waiting for us. Just by the look on Cameron and Juan’s faces, you could see they were immediately impressed. I couldn’t wait to try it out again! I was a bit apprehensive as I hadn’t ridden a bicycle on the road for quite some time, but I knew these men would have my back, so we started getting our gear on to get on with the trek.

Helmets on – Check. Stuart adjusted our seats to make sure we were all comfortable and matched our individual requirements. I decided to ride on the blue one this time, clearly because it matched what I was wearing of course! It was also the most compact looking of them all and I left the chunkier ones for the guys.

We started the trek, instantly amazed by the easiness of the ride. That assist is AWESOME! We got ourselves straight onto the road and headed out on an amazing easterly morning to Caleta… the breeze and the freedom were so great, and kind of reminded me of when I was a kid. Actually, I think it had been that long since I had ridden a bicycle on the road… but hey, as they say, you never forget how to ride a bike.

I made sure I was stuck in the middle of the group, I couldn’t imagine pulling my hand out to signal to the traffic, but it’s amazing what some practice can do, I honestly couldn’t believe how safe I felt. The ease of the pedaling really does make me wonder why people don’t get one and bike ride everywhere. Working as a delivery driver would be so much cooler and with the electric assist... it’s a breeze.

By the time we arrived at Caleta, both Juan and Cameron were already sold, Cameron was even saying that he would be selling his motorcycle and buying one of these. Like he said, why not? They are easier to ride, cheaper and a full charge gives you 50km, yes…

ning out, you simply take out the battery and take it home with you to charge. The amount your electricity bill would increase would be a meagre 17p! Compare that to £30 a month on petrol for a motorbike! Not to mention road tax, insurance and servicing.

Taking in the breath-taking views of Caleta with the morning rays, I realised how lucky we are and how beautiful this place is. We are caught up with work every day, kiddies and normal day-to-day chores. How lucky we are that in just 5 minutes you can enjoy a view so beautiful and breath taking.

Juan took a few photos of the bikes, as he does, and off we cycled to Sandy Bay… my favourite beach.

Having a little one, I unfortunately haven’t been able to enjoy this beach very much this summer, it’s kind of a nightmare to get down there with a pram. We headed down the very steep hill and my only thought was… how the hell are we going to get back up? You have the sensation you’re going to fall back even when walking up it.

We stopped there for a little while, watching the dolphins splash about in the water. Seems unreal even writing this but it was true and off we went. Yes! I cycled up probably the steepest mini hill in Gibraltar on a bicycle… all this without even breaking a sweat.

It’s crazy how this bike works, I really cannot get over it! So, so awesome.

Heading through the tunnel, which luckily wasn’t too bad with traffic for the time of day, we came through the other end to sunshine and clear ocean in front of us, an amazing downhill ride and a deep breath.

That feeling…free!

Next stop, the lighthouse. So many tourists, buses and taxis around, all waiting on the roads. While the tourists swarmed to the lighthouse to get a snapshot and take in the views, with our bikes we could ride by and get even closer... ha!

From there we headed to the Shrine of our Lady of Europe, as we rode there I noticed the big gates by the University were closed and thought we would have had to go back, but there was a little pathway through and being on bikes and testing my bike riding skills, we rode through without a problem.

We stopped there and Stuart told us a little about the Shrine and how it was once used as a lighthouse before the current one was built. He explained that sailors would come ashore and contribute to help

maintain it. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen that whipping post before… what amazing history we have.

We pass by every day, not even realising what we have around us.

From there we started to make our way up the rock, full assist On – Check!

We headed through Lathbury Barracks, trundling along. Yes, you could feel that you were cycling but there was no resistance whatsoever… walking is much more of an effort.

It was quite funny, we had some tourists staring at us, dripping with sweat and commenting as we passed…

“I can’t even walk let alone cycle up the rock”, we all found that quite amusing, little did she know, we were all quite chilled compared to her…. We got all the way up to the Queens Balcony and stopped to take in the views. And what a view it was!

The Queen certainly knew where to stop and look out when she came to visit in the 1950’s.

You can’t help but notice the silence of these bikes, especially when you’re riding along and your peace is rudely interrupted by the revving of a diesel tour bus loaded with passengers, gets you wondering why people are not opting for this type of tour more.

Unfortunately, as we were pressed for time, life always seems to be lately, we started making our way down the rock. With the wind flowing, I started looking around and wondered how different the views would be from a car or a bus. I would never be feeling this way, the freedom, the fresh air… I even noticed an eagle flying right above me.

As we headed into the upper town, I became apprehensive again, with the sudden realisation that I was on a bike. So many cars, so much traffic everywhere.

Everyone busy, everyone rushing… it is crazy to think how out of the way you feel just by going up the rock and enjoying a few hours up there, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and soaking in the beauty of our hometown.

I cannot recommend this trip enough, get your family and friends, call Stuart up and book a tour with him and visit Gibraltar, you will not be disappointed. I recommend them 100%.

I had a smile on my face all day after that, thanks again Stuart. By the way Cameron did sell his bike!

Nuestro recorrido personal de bicicletas eléctricas Tuvimos el placer de unirnos a Stuart en otro viaje de Ebike esta semana. La última vez que no terminamos la gira y fiel a su palabra, Stuart organizó esta excursión para que pudiéramos disfrutar de toda la experiencia.

Esta vez, en el Café Fresco, estaba mi esposo Cameron y su amigo y fotógrafo Juan. Mi esposo me había estado escuchando divagar sobre lo geniales que eran estas bicicletas y no pudo evitar unirse para ver de qué se trataba todo este alboroto.

Stuart y sus 4 bicicletas de aspecto increíble estaban allí esperándonos. Con solo mirar las caras de Cameron y Juan, se podía ver que quedaron impresionados de inmediato. No podía esperar para probarlo de nuevo, aunque un poco aprensivo, ya que no había viajado en bicicleta por bastante tiempo.

Sabía que estos hombres me respaldarían, así que comenzamos a ponernos nuestro equipo para continuar con la caminata.

Cascos puestos - Comprobar. Stuart ajustó nuestros asientos para asegurarse de que todo sea cómodo y cumpliera con nuestros requisitos individuales. Esta vez decidí montar en el azul, ¡claramente porque combinaba con lo que llevaba puesto, por supuesto! También era el más compacto de todos y dejé los más gruesos para los chicos.

BLE! Nos metimos directamente en el camino y nos dirigimos en esta increíble mañana de Pascua a Caleta ... la brisa, la libertad era tan grande, me recordó a cuando era un niño otra vez. En realidad, creo que había pasado tanto tiempo desde que monté una bicicleta en la carretera ... pero bueno, como dicen, nunca olvidas cómo andar en bicicleta.

Me aseguré de estar atrapado en el medio del grupo, no podía imaginar sacar mi mano para señalar al tráfico, increíble lo que hace la práctica, pero sinceramente no podía creer lo seguro que me sentía. La facilidad de pedalear, realmente me hace preguntarme por qué las personas no tienen uno y van en bicicleta a todas partes. Trabajar para la entrega sería mucho más genial y con la asistencia eléctrica ... es muy fácil.

Llegamos a Caleta, tanto Juan como Cameron se vendieron automáticamente a esto, Cameron incluso dijo que ya venderá su motocicleta y comprará uno de estos. Es como si él dijera ¿por qué no? Más fácil de conducir y más barato. Quiero decir que con una carga completa tienes 50 km, sí ... ¡50 km! ¿Cuántas rocas puedes hacer con eso? Y cuando empiezas a quedarte sin batería, simplemente saca la batería y llévala a casa para cargarla. ¡El monto de su factura de electricidad aumentaría en 17p! ¡Compare eso con £ 30 al mes en gasolina para la bicicleta! Sin mencionar el impuesto de circulación, el seguro y el servicio.

Impresionantes vistas de Caleta con los rayos de la mañana, es muy fácil olvidar lo afortunados que somos y lo hermoso que es este lugar. Estamos atrapados con el trabajo todos los días, los niños y las

tareas cotidianas normales. Qué suerte tenemos de que en solo 5 minutos puedas tener una vista tan hermosa e impresionante.

Juan tomó algunas fotos de la bicicleta, como lo hace, y salimos en bicicleta a Sandy Bay ... mi playa favorita. Al tener uno pequeño, desafortunadamente no he podido disfrutar tanto de esta playa este verano, una especie de pesadilla con un cochecito para llegar allí.

Bajamos esa colina muy empinada y mi pensamiento fue ... ¡cómo demonios vamos a volver a subir! Tiene la sensación de que va a retroceder incluso al caminar.

Nos detenemos allí por un momento, observando a los delfines chapotear en el agua, parece irreal incluso escribir esto, pero era cierto y nos vamos. ¡Si! Subí en bicicleta, probablemente, a la mini colina más empinada de Gibraltar en bicicleta ... todo esto sin siquiera sudar. Es una locura cómo funciona esta bicicleta. Realmente no puedo superarla, así que es increíble.

Dirigiéndose a través del túnel, afortunadamente no era tan malo con el tráfico a esa hora del día y cuando atravesamos ... sol, un océano claro frente a ti, una colina increíble y una respiración profunda.

Esa sensación ... ¡libre!

Próxima parada, el faro. Muchos turistas alrededor, autobuses, taxis y todos esperando en las carreteras mientras los turistas pululan hacia el faro para tomar una instantánea y disfrutar de las vistas, aunque con nuestras bicicletas ... ja, podemos pasar y acercarnos aún más.

Desde allí nos dirigimos al Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Europa, mientras cabalgábamos allí noté que las grandes puertas de la Universidad estaban cerradas y pensé que habríamos tenido que regresar, pero había un pequeño camino y estar en bicicleta y durante las pruebas. mis habilidades para andar en bicicleta, atravesamos sin problemas.

Nos detuvimos allí y Stuart nos contó un poco sobre el Santuario y cómo se usaba como faro antes de que se construyera el otro. Explicó que los marineros llegarían a tierra y contribuirían a ayudar a mantenerlo. No podía creer que no hubiera visto esa publicación azotada antes ... que historia tan increíble tenemos. Pasamos todos los días y ni siquiera nos damos cuenta de lo que tenemos a nuestro alrededor.

A partir de ahí, comenzamos a subir por la roca, asistencia completa ¡On - Check!

Nos dirigimos a través del cuartel de Lathbury y seguimos caminando. Sí, podrías sentir que estabas en bicicleta, pero sin resistencia alguna ... caminar es más un esfuerzo que lo que hicimos nosotros.

Fue bastante divertido, teníamos a algunos turistas mirándolos, chorreando sudor y comentando cuando pasábamos ... “No puedo caminar ni mucho menos subir la roca en bicicleta” ... a todos nos pareció bastante divertido ya que todos estábamos bastante frío comparado, poco sabía ella ...

Llegamos hasta el Balcón de Queens, nos detuvimos para disfrutar de las vistas y qué vista es. La reina ciertamente sabía dónde detenerse y mirar cuando vino a visitarla en la década de 1950.

No puedes evitar notar el silencio de estas bicicletas, especialmente cuando conduces y tu paz se ve interrumpida bruscamente por la aceleración de un autobús turístico diesel cargado de pasajeros, te hace preguntarte por qué las personas no están optando por este tipo de recorrido ...

Desafortunadamente, como estábamos presionados por el tiempo, la vida siempre parece ser últimamente, comenzamos a descender por la roca.

Con el viento fluyendo, comencé a mirar alrededor y me pregunté qué tan diferentes son las vistas en comparación con un automóvil o un autobús. Nunca me sentiría de la misma manera, la libertad, el aire fresco ... incluso noté un águila volando justo encima de mí ...

Cuando nos dirigimos a la parte alta de la ciudad, me pongo aprensivo de nuevo, al darme cuenta de repente de que estoy en una bicicleta.

Tantos autos, tanto tráfico en todas partes. Todos ocupados, todos apresurados ... es una locura pensar en lo que se siente al subir la roca y disfrutar de unas horas allí, lejos del ajetreo y el bullicio de la vida cotidiana y sumergirse en la belleza de nuestra ciudad natal. .

No puedo recomendar este viaje lo suficiente, busque a su familia y amigos, llame a Stuart y reserve un recorrido con él y visite Gibraltar, no se sentirá decepcionado. Los recomiendo al 100%.

After successful participation levels following an open call for participants in 2018, which then resulted in the creation of Cadiz PhotoNature, the province of Cádiz will yet again host a new edition of the International Nature Photography Fair “Cádiz PhotoNature” on the 8th, 9th and 10th of November.

Organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Junta de Andalucía, and in conjunction with Canon Spain and the City of Benalup-Casas Viejas (the municipality where the event is being held), the event will take place within the facilities of Wakana, an experiential Nature Centre next to the Celemín reservoir, the perfect place to hold this type of event.

The province will again this year become a benchmark for nature photography in Spain and will do so under unrivalled credentials on a national level.

Boasting 43 natural areas included within the Natura Network 2000, which constitutes 34% of this provinces’ surface area, guarantees this area as a premium nature destination, not only at state level, but also at a European level.

Its role in connecting two continents, as well as

the variety of natural processes and phenomena that occur within its geographical range, such as unique bird and cetacean migrations, makes this province an incomparable setting for naturalists and photographers to capture all it has to offer through their camera lens. All of this reinforces this natural enclave’s status as a first-rate nature destination, both on a national and international level, and as an unparalleled landscape for taking photographs.

The success of this year’s call has been such that almost the entire sector will meet in the province of Cádiz, more specifically in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, to listen to the best current photographers or to catch up on up to date news about the important techniques that are developing in the tireless and dynamic world of photography. The Fair Programme draws upon numerous and attractive activities that cover different areas of the discipline, carefully selected to satisfy amateurs and professionals alike, for major brands users and for both young and old.

The Technical Days will feature masterclasses covering different subjects, such as landscape pho-

tography, nature in action, macro photography and night photography. Under the expertise of the prestigious photographer Mario Rubio, several of the world’s best professionals within their respective fields will take to the stage at Cadiz PhotoNature.

Javier Alonso, an award-winning photographer, trainer, editor of LNH magazine and photographic travel guide, will give a conference on Landscape Photography: Technique, Aesthetics and Emotion.

Isabel Díaz, a nature photographer specialising in landscapes and its abstractions, who is also a researcher in marine ecology, will focus her ‘My World by the Sea’ masterclass on showcasing coastal natural scenes from an aesthetic and artistic perspective.

Antonio Liébana, a photographer renowned for his publications in national and international journals, will discuss his dissertation on Nature Photography in Action. Nightcolors, the dynamic duo formed by Iván-Fusky and Paco Farero, will focus on night photography and light painting techniques. Finally, Javier Aznar, a macro photography expert, will present a photographic journey into the microworld.

But that’s not all. The masterclasses will be com-

plemented with a programme of lectures from ambassadors and representatives of the world’s main photographic brands, as well as other presentations offered by the Andalusian Federation of Photography. Among them, Markus Varesvuo from Finland, who specialises in bird photography, stands out. He is also a Canon explorer and member of the Wild Wonders of Europe team.

One hundred companies and specialist establishments will present the latest technical innovations from some of the most prestigious lens brands, the most interesting travel products created for nature photography, specific publications and all kinds of other equipment required for practicing photography: hides, backpacks, tripods, lighting fixtures, filters, etc. Additionally, there will be product, service and software demonstrations from the brands in attendance.

A dedicated space, designed and equipped to hold workshops and located in the vicinity of the lens zone, will be made available to exhibitors, allowing for larger audience capacities than the individual tents. To date, workshops have been arranged on

macro photography by Luca García; on colour management in our digital projects, conducted by Domingo José Puerto and offered by FotoK; and about the use of landscape filters, by Lucroit specialists.

Usually, exhibiting companies, both photographic stores and brands, offer special discounts for attendees, and also allow visitors to test products, which is often a service that is unavailable in shops. On this occasion, there will also be great discounts for Cádiz PhotoNature participants, and of course, the opportunity to practice on new equipment at the stands and even during some of our official activities.

Just like the first edition of the Fair, several wildlife photography workshops have been organised, with both native wild species and controlled fauna.

With prior registration due to the limited availability of spaces, participants can take pictures of Iberian wolves, golden eagles and griffon vultures. In ad-

dition, several natural sets will be installed where you can photograph and interact with other species of smaller fauna, such as owls, badgers or wildcats.

There will be a designated spot for little ones to photograph this fauna, which will be provided by Wild Mari.

Another one of the Fair’s attractions will be guided outings to enjoy the attractions and natural values ​​of the province of Cádiz. These free excursions have been planned so as to allow attendees the opportunity to enjoy photographic practice in these local settings, and are specifically designed so that participants can become familiar with representative elements of the province’s fauna, flora and landscapes. With a monetary award that equals the most prestigious competitions in the world, it is already attracting some of the best national and international photographers. The finalist’s photographs will be shown in the exhibition which, throughout the duration of the event, will be on site and will also host the public awards ceremony. With the first edition of the contest able to attract some of the highest national and international participation numbers in the country, 2019 has become a year of reinforcement, and especially, further internationalisation.

In fact, last year saw participants from 22 different countries take part, this year that number has increased to 36, constituting more than a third of the total number of photographs submitted and highlighting the significance that this contest is acquiring on the international stage. Tras el éxito de participación de la convocatoria de 2018, en la que tuvo lugar el nacimiento de Cádiz PhotoNature, durante los días 8, 9 y 10 de noviembre, la provincia de Cádiz acogerá una nueva edición de la Feria Internacional de Fotografía de Naturaleza “Cádiz PhotoNature”. Organizada por la Consejería de Agricultura, Pesca y Desarrollo Sostenible de la Junta de Andalucía, cuenta, entre otras, con la colaboración preferente de Canon España y el Ayuntamiento de Benalup-Casas Viejas, municipio donde se celebra el evento, dentro de las instalaciones de Wakana, un centro de naturaleza experiencial, ideal para la celebración de este tipo de actividades, junto al embalse del Celemín.

Así pues, la provincia se convertirá de nuevo este año en la referencia de la fotografía de naturaleza en España y lo hará bajo credenciales inigualables en el contexto nacional. Contar con 43 espacios naturales incluidos en la Red Natura 2000, un 34% de su superficie, la avalan como destino de naturaleza, no solo a nivel estatal, sino también europeo. Su papel de conexión entre dos continentes, así como la variedad de procesos y fenómenos naturales que se manifiestan en su ámbito geográfico, tales como las singulares migraciones de aves y cetáceos, hacen a esta provincia un marco incomparable para el naturalista y el fotógrafo que quiera captarlos con su objetivo. Todo ello permite que este enclave se esté consolidando como un destino de naturaleza preferente en el contexto nacional e internacional y sea un escenario inigualable para la toma de fotografías.

El éxito de convocatoria actual ha sido tal, que la práctica totalidad del sector va a darse cita en la provincia de Cádiz, más concretamente en el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, para escuchar a los mejores fotógrafos del momento o para ponerse al día de las novedades técnicas más importantes que acontecen en este mundillo tan infatigable y dinámico. El Programa de la Feria se nutre de numerosas y atractivas actividades que abarcan los distintos ámbitos de esta disciplina, planificadas cuidadosamente para satisfacer a aficionados y profesionales, para usuarios de todas las marcas importantes, para jóvenes y menos jóvenes.

Las Jornadas Técnicas contarán con masterclasses de diferentes materias, como fotografía de pai-

saje, de naturaleza en acción, macrofotografía y foto nocturna. Bajo la batuta del prestigioso fotógrafo Mario Rubio irán desfilando por los escenarios de Cádiz PhotoNature, varios de los mejores profesionales mundiales dentro de sus respectivas especialidades.

Javier Alonso, un laureado fotógrafo, formador, editor de la revista LNH y guía de viajes fotográficos, impartirá una conferencia sobre Fotografía de Paisaje: Técnica, estética y Emoción. Isabel Díaz, una fotógrafa de naturaleza especializada en el paisaje y sus abstracciones, e investigadora en ecología marina, centrará su masterclass, Mi mundo a orillas del mar, en mostrar escenas naturales litorales desde una perspectiva estética y artística. Antonio Liébana, reconocido fotógrafo por sus publicaciones en revistas nacionales e internacionales, versará su disertación sobre Fotografía de naturaleza en acción.

Nightcolors, el dinámico duo formado por Iván-Fusky y Paco Farero se centrará en la fotografía nocturna y las técnicas de lightpainting. Por último, Javier Aznar, experto en macrofotografía, nos propondrá Un viaje fotográfico al micromundo.

Pero esto no es todo. Las masterclasses se complementarán con un programa de conferencias ofrecidos por los embajadores y embajadoras de las principales marcas fotográficas del mercado mundial y otras ponencias ofrecidas por la Federación Andaluza de Fotografía. De entre ellos, destaca el finlandés Markus Varesvuo, especializado en la fotografía de aves, explorador de Canon y miembro del equipo de Wild Wonders of Europe.

Un centenar de empresas y establecimientos especializados presentarán las últimas novedades técnicas expuestas por las más prestigiosas marcas de óptica, los más interesantes productos turísticos creados alrededor de la fotografía de naturaleza, publicaciones específicas y todo tipo de material necesario para la práctica de esta disciplina: hides, mochilas, trípodes, accesorios de iluminación, fitros, etc. Además, se realizarán demos de productos, servicios, software, etc., a cargo de las marcas allí presentes.

Un espacio específico, diseñado y dotado para impartir talleres, ubicado en las proximidades de la zona de óptica, se pondrá a disposición de los expositores y permitirá su uso para audiencias superiores a las capacidades de las carpas individuales.

Hasta la fecha, tenemos concertados talleres sobre macrofotografía de la mano de Luca García; sobre La gestión del color en nuestros proyectos digitales, impartido por Domingo José Puerto y ofrecido por FotoK; y sobre el Uso de Filtros en Paisajes, a cargo de especialistas de Lucroit.

Habitualmente, las empresas expositoras, tanto tiendas fotográficas como marcas, ofrecen descuentos especiales para los asistentes, además de permitir la experimentación con los productos, muchas veces difíciles de encontrar en establecimientos. En esta ocasión, también hay previstos grandes descuentos para los participantes de Cádiz PhotoNature y, cómo no, la posibilidad de practicar con nuevos equipos en los stands e incluso en algunas de nuestras actividades oficiales.

Como en la primera edición de la Feria, se han organizado varios talleres de fotografía de fauna, tanto con especies autóctonas salvajes, como con fauna controlada. Los participantes podrán tomar imágenes, previa inscripción debido al aforo limitado de que se dispone, de lobos ibéricos, águilas reales y buitres leonados. Además, se instalarán varios decorados naturales donde poder fotografiar e interactuar con otras especies de nuestra fauna de menor envergadura, como mochuelo, lechuza, tejón o gato montés. Los más pequeños tendrán un lugar privilegiado para la fotografía de esta fauna de la mano de Wild Mari.

Otro de los atractivos que tendrá la asistencia a esta feria, es la realización de salidas guiadas para

disfrutar de los atractivos y valores naturales de la provincia de Cádiz. Con este fin y para poder disfrutar de la práctica fotográfica en esos escenarios, se han planificado excursiones gratuitas específicamente destinadas para conocer elementos representativos de la fauna, la flora y los paisajes de la provincia, abiertas para todos los asistentes previa reserva e inscripción.

Sin lugar a dudas, una de las actividades que más acaparará la atención de los visitantes a la Feria será el nuevo Concurso Internacional de Fotografía de Naturaleza Cádiz Photonature. Con una dotación económica a la altura de los más prestigiosos certámenes del mundo, ya atrae a los mejores fotógrafos nacionales e internacionales. Las fotografías finalistas serán mostradas en la exposición que, durante los días que dure el evento, se instalará en su recinto y acogerá el acto público de la entrega de premios. Si en la primera edición del concurso, este logró situarse entre los que concitó mayor participación nacional e internacional de nuestro país, 2019 ha sido el año de la consolidación y, especialmente, de la internacionalización. Andalusia and Europe join forces for the

Environment

The Andalusian Environmental Training Plan (PAFA) promotes natural heritage management, fosters sustainability and promotes training.

From the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, the General Secretariat of Environment, Water and Climate Change will execute the Andalusian Environmental Training Plan over two phases (spring and autumn), where the commitment to new fields in “Green employment” is a primary objective.

The training activities are co-financed by the European Social Fund with 80% of the amount, and the Board funding the remaining 20%, with an aim of training those interested in the management of Andalusia’s natural heritage and the promotion of sustainability, striving for stable employment in environmental fields from a position of gender equality and social integration.

It is important that recipients of the Andalusian Environmental Training Plan are acknowledged, including all of the residents in Andalusia who are involved in the agricultural, forestry and environmental sectors, as well as other social activities related to the conservation and restoration of the natural environment and protected areas, and the promotion of sustainability.

The second of the conditions of admittance is that applicants not belong to the public administration of the Junta de Andalucía.

The administration is convinced that, “only with hard work from the entire general public, can good standards of living appropriated to a society of progress be achieved. The role along this path that training can play is essential. The contribution of this environmental training approach is the only way to ensure the sustainability of this process”.

For this autumn of 2019, the Andalusian Environmental Training Plan is structured in four course plans: 1.- Management of natural spaces and biodiversity conservation

Intended for people with basic computer skills who want to get to know the concept of a geographic information system, its fundamentals and operation.

In this first proposals curriculum the program covers broad sections from the ‘blue economy’ of coastal salt mines, to methods of training in biodiversity, through systems of hunting standards or the ecological exploitation of pinus pinea or the resources of cork and its uses.

2.-Urban sustainability and climate change Designed for professionals in environmental education and communications, or professionals in the environmental sector and technicians / managers of local entities to frame a path to sustainable mobility and ensure urban biodiversity as an environmental awareness tool. Reuse, recycling and circular economy or edible gardens go hand in hand in the contents of this training, with a contribution to sustainable tourism in the face of climate change.

3.- Environmental education professionals

Designed for anyone in the education field, regulated or not, environmental education sets the example. Methodologies, participation, resources, methods ... to learn and expand, from guided itineraries to raising awareness in biosphere reserves. A challenging task.

4.- Training and forestry center of Cazorla In 2018, the XXXII Edition of the Training Actions Programme of the Cazorla Forest Training and Experimentation Centre was held. The general objective of this meeting is to promote training for employment with locally thematic courses for “green” jobs that could potentially arise in the current climate.

Practical and interrelated solutions with the natural environment always in mind, based in the Natural Park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. The Ministry has in mind that the improvement of productivity, efficiency in work and performance in all management processes that affect the natural environment must be compatible with the sustainability of resources and be developed within an

adequate health and safety framework for all workers, aspects that are encouraged in the current course programme.

The conditions of access to each of the proposed training phases are very interesting, due to the free training activities for groups of twenty-five students if accommodation is not necessary, and in groups of twenty if accommodation is required.

Academic costs, teaching material, practical activities and, where appropriate, student accommodation and meals are included. The courses are taught during weekends so as not to hinder the student’s usual rhythm of work.

The sustainability, biodiversity and knowledge of Andalusian landscapes and the circular economy when intended as “green” are, according to these proposals, possibilities for economic, cultural and social growth that should not be neglected in the area of the Andalusian territory. As it appears to be with the Junta - Europe collaboration in this new edition of PAFA.

Andalucía y Europa se dan la mano por el Medio Ambiente

El Plan Andaluz de Formación Ambiental (PAFA) fomenta la gestión del patrimonio natural, promueve la sostenibilidad y promueve la formación.

Desde la Consejería de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pesca y Desarrollo Sostenible, la Secretaría General de Medio Ambiente, Agua y Cambio Climático se ejecuta a lo largo de dos fases (primavera y otoño) el Plan Andaluz de Formación Ambiental donde la apuesta por los nuevos yacimientos de “empleo verde” es un objetivo primordial.

Las acciones formativas son cofinanciadas por el Fondo Social Europeo con un 80% del montante y la Junta el 20% restante, con el objetivo de capacitar a los interesados en la gestión del patrimonio natural de Andalucía y la promoción de la sostenibilidad, persiguiendo el empleo estable en el ámbito ambiental desde una perspectiva de igualdad de género e integración social.

Importante reseñar las personas destinatarias del Plan Andaluz de Formación Ambiental, que enmarca a todas aquellas residentes en Andalucía y que desarrollan sus actividades en los sectores agrario, forestal y ambiental, así como otros actores sociales relacionados con la conservación y restauración del medio natural y los espacios protegidos, así como la promoción de la sostenibilidad.

pertenecer a la administración pública de la Junta de Andalucía.

Desde la administración están convencidos que, “solo con el firme trabajo de toda la ciudadanía se podrá alcanzar las cotas de bienestar adecuadas a una sociedad de progreso. El papel que en este camino debe jugar la formación resulta esencial. La aportación de la formación ambiental en este trayecto es la única vía para asegurar la sostenibilidad del proceso”.

Para este otoño de 2019, el Plan Andaluz de Formación Ambiental se estructura en cuatro líneas de acción: 1.- Gestión de espacios naturales y conservación de la biodiversidad Está destinado a personas Personas con conocimientos básicos de informática que quieran conocer el concepto de un sistema de información geográfica, sus fundamentos y funcionamiento.

En los contenidos de esta primera propuesta el programa abarca secciones amplias desde la economía azul de las salinas del litoral, hasta los métodos de formación en biodiversidad pasando por sistemas de calidad cinegética o explotaciones ecológicas del pinus pinea o los recursos del corcho y su aprovechamiento.

2.-Sostenibilidad urbana y cambio climático.

Pensado para profesionales de la educación y la comunicación ambiental, o profesionales del sector ambiental y técnicos/gestores de entidades locales para enmarcar un camino a una movilidad sostenible y procurar la biodiversidad urbana como herramienta de sensibilización ambiental. La reutilización , reciclaje y economía circular o los jardines comestibles van de la mano en el contenido de la formación con el aporte al turismo sostenible frente al cambio climático.

3.- Profesionales de la educación ambiental.

Pensado para cualquier persona del ámbito educacional, reglado o no, la educación medioambiental marca la pauta. Metodologías, participación, recursos, métodos… para conocer y ampliar desde los itinerarios guiados a la sensibilización en las reservas de la biosfera. Todo un reto.

4.- Centro de Capacitación y experimentación forestal de Cazorla En 2019 se celebra la XXXII Edición del Programa de Acciones Formativas del Centro de Capacitación y Experimentación Forestal de Cazorla. El objetivo general de esta convocatoria es impulsar la formación para el empleo con cursos de temáticas cercanos a los potenciales puestos de empleo “verdes” detectados actualmente. Planteamientos muy prácticos e interrelacionados con el medio natural que rodea al

Centro, en pleno Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas. La Consejería tiene presente que la mejora de la productividad, la eficiencia en el trabajo y los rendimientos en todos los procesos de gestión que afectan al medio natural han de ser compatibles con la sostenibilidad de los recursos y desarrollarse en un adecuado marco de seguridad y salud para todos los trabajadores, aspectos que se potencian en el actual programa de cursos Las condiciones de acceso a cada una de las fases de formación propuestas, son muy interesantes, debido a la gratuidad de las acciones formativas para grupos de veinticinco alumnos si no es necesario el alojamiento y en grupos de veinte, para el caso contrario. Se incluyen los costes académicos, el material didáctico, las actividades prácticas y en su caso, el alojamiento y la manutención del alumnado. Impartiéndose los cursos durante los fines de semana para no entorpecer el ritmo laboral habitual del alumno.

La sostenibilidad, biodiversidad, conocimiento de los paisajes andaluces y la economía circular pensada en “verde” son , a tenor de estas propuestas, unas posibilidades de crecimiento económico, cultural social que no deben despreciarse en el ámbito del territorio andaluz. We were pleased to see quite a lot of our issues contained within party manifestos and, as this edition goes to print, a new Government will be in office and we will have resumed our lobbying to ensure that our objectives are realised. Issues we target include climate change and local causes, pollution, environmental stds and enforcement, oil based industries, public health assessments, transport, development, EMF radiation, litter, conservation, energy and cross border. Fundamental planning and development issues in managing Gibraltar’s environment are of key interest to us and we work hard on the DPC to push for best environmental outcomes. Major projects dealing in Gibraltar’s waste, sewage treatment and power generation are also areas we follow.

The most pressing issue at present is the need for collective and focused action that must be taken to address climate change. The ESG has historically called for cross party consensus on environmental decisions and management and has reiterated this message via a new platform formed in Gibraltar to campaign on Climate Change: ‘Coalition for Climate Action’. This grouping includes the ESG (Environmental Safety Group), GONHS (Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society), TNP (The Nautilus Project), GHT (Gibraltar Heritage Trust), Sustainable Gibraltar and Pollution Watch. This group wants to see an Independent Body set up for climate action, independently funded, with a cross party supported, time lined and binding agenda to decarbonise Gibraltar’s community.

Manifestos inherently supported the need for cross party consensus – which is good – but less clear is how each one sees delivering on the independent body being called for by us NGOs. We have run pe-

A Via Ferrata is a vertical path that is equipped with help and safety elements. The most important element is the “lifeline”, a steel cable that is present at all times on the path, you must always be hooked on to it, at least as a method of support. The “steps” are sheaves that are embedded in the wall and serve to help the upward advance. Other elements

include the Tibetan Bridges (made up of 4 cables), the Monkey Bridges (made up of 3 cables) and Zip Lines (to cross valleys or negotiate higher points).

The Via Ferratas are rated according to how tough they are and their difficulty at each different level. Level 0 (initiation, without difficulty); Level 1 (easy, but with some complicated sections); Level 2 (difficult, with several stretches of difficulty); Level 3 (Very difficult, with several overhanging walls); Level 4 (Maximum difficulty, only advisable for people with a lot of experience); Level 5 (Extreme, only very experts).

Our company only works up to level 3, only in very exceptional cases have we conducted level 4. We have never done any with level 5 ferrata participants.

To complete a Via Ferrata it is essential to use individual and group technical equipment. The individual equipment consists of a harness, zipper (fall arrester with energy absorber), helmet and short resting sling - it is advisable to wear short gloves.

In addition, the instructors must carry the necessary equipment for possible rescue and assistance.

For an amazing November 2019 adventure, we suggest two extraordinarily beautiful routes, which in addition progress in difficulty. Via Ferrata de Benalauría (Level 1) and Via Ferrata de Benadalid (Level 2), both located in the Serranía de Ronda and with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Straits and Rock of Gibraltar.

VIA FERRATA DE BENALAURÍA. This Via Ferrata is rated as Level 1 (easy, with

some complicated sections) and is ideal as an introduction to this type of sport.

After following a beautiful path for about 30 minutes, we approach the Ferrata from the east side, enjoying beautiful landscapes. It starts with a simple section to gain some height, which includes several balconies to give a sense of security. We pass several horizontal sections to reach the “Canal del Buitre” Canyon. Then we complete two sections that are about 25 meters long, reaching the first Monkey Bridge that crosses the canyon. After this, there is a stretch of about 20 meters to finish the Via Ferrata with a second Monkey Bridge.

From the top you can see the entire Canyon and appreciate the height reached, incredible!

We have 15 minutes left on a path down the north side that returns us to the starting point.

VÍA FERRATA DE BENADALID The Via Ferrata de Benadalid is considered Level 2 (difficult, with several stretches of difficulty), aerial and very exciting. With almost 70 meters of very vertical tracks.We return to the previous path and deviate between the rocks to reach the beginning of the Via, this takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

The route seen from below is impressive. It begins with a continuous ascent of almost 40 meters until we reach the first overhang to test our strength. We continue the ascent overcoming several small climbs and at almost 55 meters, an important overhang. After that a short break to enjoy the great views of the Serranía de Ronda, more specifically of the Genal Valley. Just a few meters more of the path and we reach the end, having reached a height of 75 metres. We did it!

We then return to join the route back from the previous path.

Una Vía Ferrata es un sendero vertical que está equiado con elementos de ayuda y seguridad. El elemento más importante es la “línea de vida”, es un cable de acero que está es todo momento en el sendero, se debe siempre estar anclado al mismo al menos en un punto de apoyo. Los “peldaños”, son gavillas que están incrustadas en la pared y sirven para ayudar en el avance. Otros elementos son los Puentes Tibetanos (de 4 cables), los Puente Monos (de 3 cables), Las Tirolinas (para salvar valles o grandes desniveles).

Las Vías Ferratas están catalogadas según su dureza y dificultad en distintos niveles. Nivel 0 (iniciación, sin dificultad); Nivel 1 (fácil, pero con algún tramo complicado); Nivel 2 (difícil, con varios tramos de dificultad); Nivel 3 (Muy difícil, con varios extraplomos); Nivel 4 (Máxima dificultad, sólo aconsejable para personas con mucha experiencia); Nivel 5 (Extremo, sólo muy expertos). Nuestra empresa sólo trabaja hasta nivel 3, sólo en casos muy excepcionales hemos realizado nivel 4. Nunca hemos realizado con participantes ferratas de nivel 5.

Para realizar una Vía Ferrata es imprescindible

el uso de material técnico individual y colectivo. El equipo individual consta de arnés, zipper (o disipador anticáidas), cascos y vaga corta de descanso -es aconsejable el uso de guantes cortos-. Además los monitores deberán llevar el material necesario para posible rescate y asistencia.

Para esta gran aventura de Noviembre de 2019, proponemos dos vías de extraordinaria belleza y además de progresiva dificultad. Vía Ferrata de Benalauría (Nivel 1) y Vía Ferrata de Benadalid (Nivel 2), ambas situadas en plena Serranía de Ronda y con unas vistas espectaculares del Mar Mediterránea y del Estrecho y Peñón de Gibraltar.

VIA FERRATA DE BENALAURÍA. Esta Vía Ferrata catalogada como Nivel 1 (fácil,

con algún tramo complicado), es ideal para iniciarse en este tipo de deporte.

Tras un precioso sendero de aproximación de unos 30 minutos, nos acercamos a ella por la cara este, disfrutando de un bello paisaje. Comienza con un tramo sencillo para ganar altura con varios balcones que

nos darán sensación de seguridad. Pasamos varios tramos horizontales para llegar al Cañón “Canal del Buitre”. Realizamos dos largos de unos 25 metros y llegamos al primer Puente Mono que atraviesa el cañón. Tras él, un largo de unos 20 metros para terminar la vía con el segundo Puente Mono.

Desde arriba se aprecia todo el Cañón y la altura superada, impresionante!

Nos quedan 15 minutos por un sendero de descenso por la carta norte que nos devuelve al punto de partida.

VÍA FERRATA DE BENADALID La Vía Ferrata de Benadaliad se considera de Nivel 2 (difícil, con varios tramos de dificultad), muy emocionante y aérea. Casi 70 metros de vía, muy verticales.

Retomamos el sendero anterior para desviarnos entre piedras y llegar al comienzo de la vía, esto nos tomará unos 15 o 20 minutos.

La vía desde abajo es impresionante. Comienza con un ascenso continuo de casi 40 metros hasta llegar al primer extraplomo que pone a prueba nuestras fuerzas. Continuamos el ascenso superando varios pequeños desplomes y a casi 55 metros un extraplomo importante. Tras él un pequeño descanso para disfrutar de unas geniales vistas de Serranía de Ronda y más concretamente del valle del Genal.

Unos pocos metros más de vía y alcanzamos el final con más de 75 metros de desnivel. ¡Lo hemos conseguido!

Regresamos para enlazar por el camino de vuelta de la anterior vía.

weekend Fin de semana de Setas

A weekend away where you can enjoy Autumnal nature in a unique refuge in the Serranía de Ronda: the Finca Algaba de Ronda, where nature, history and culture merge within 50 hectares of Meditarranean mountain countryside filled with impressive Portuguese, holm and cork oaks. You will stroll along trails observing the livestock breeds that are in recovery in the area (golden Iberian pigs, grazalemeña merino sheep, etc.) and savour the delicious honey produced by local bee hives.

From the finca you can visit the City of Ronda, which is less than 5 km away, as well as the natural parks of Sierra de las Nieves (soon to become the first National Park in Malaga and third in Andalucia), Grazalema (the place in Spain with the highest ra-

infall) and the wonderful Valle del Genal teeming with chestnut trees.

Throughout the Saturday and as a part of wild mushroom season, we will be joined by the well-known mycologist Pablo J. Pérez Daniëls (taxonomic coordinator for the extensive paper and guide: Mycological Flora of Andalucía) who will give information on how to pick mushrooms, accompany us to collect them and then finally classify and explain more about them to the tour attendees. In addition he will also be giving several talks for any mushroom and fungi enthusiasts.

At the Algaba you will stay in charming rural houses and enjoy healthy and wholesome meals on a full board basis.

Pérez Daniëls (coordinador taxónomico de la gran publicación Flora Micológica de Andalucía) que nos dará información sobre como recolectar setas, nos acompañará a la salida para recolectarlas y posteriormente clasificará y explicará a los asistentes, además de impartir varias charlas paras los aficionados al mundo de las setas.

Activity : From the “El Aljibe” Visitor’s centre we offer you a unique opportunity to discover the characteristics of the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. We take you on a tour around an area that is of Special ​​ Protection for its biodiversity and landscape variety whilst discovering the different Natural Park ecosystems: Alcornocal and Quejigal forest are very well preserved, areas of herrizas with stony and shallow soils and subtropical or laurisilva type flora that can be found in headwaters and troughs of rivers and streams called “ the Canutos and Bosques de Niebla ”; the last jungle in southern Europe.

Descripción actividad: Desde el Centro de Visitantes “El Aljibe” ofrecemos una oportunidad única para dar a conocer las características y singularidades del Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, a través de un Tour turístico por un área de Especial Protección por su biodiversidad y variedad paisajística que nos permitirá conocer diferentes ecosistemas del Parque Natural: bosque de Alcornocal y Quejigal muy bien conservados, zonas de herrizas con suelos pedregosos y poco profundos y la flora de tipo subtropical o laurisilva que tienen su origen en cabeceras y vaguadas de los ríos y arroyos en lo que se denomina “los Canutos y Bosques de Niebla” y constituyen la última selva del Sur de Europa.

Programación actividad: Bienvenida y recepción (Centro de Visitantes) Introducción al Parque Natural (audiovisual y maqueta del Parque).

Tour por el Parque Natural (1,30 h. aproximadamente).

Visita Finca la Tala (recorrido por la finca; 1,30 h. aproximadamente).

Regreso al Centro de Visitantes.

TORRE DEL TAJO: BATTLEMENT TOWER OF THE COAST OF CÁDIZ Barbate

The Tower of Tajo, also known as Torre de la Tembladera, was built between 1585 and 1588, renovated in the 18th century and then subsequently restored in 1992 by the Junta de Andalucía. It is situated on the edge of a one-hundred-metre-high cliff, within the Natural Park of La Breña and Marismas del Barbate. It has been listed as a Property of Cultural Interest since 1985.

To look into its history, we must go back to the 15th and 18th centuries, during which the Mediterranean coast suffered numerous assaults from Berber pirates. There were two main reasons for these attacks: the conflict between the Turkish Empire and the European Christian powers; and the expulsion of

the Moorish and Jewish population from Spain. The pirate’s objectives were clear: to steal and to rape and kidnap women.

After a varying succession of attacks during the 16th century, King Felipe II ordered the construction of a defensive network along the coast that was made up of several watchtowers, their purpose was to defend the Andalusian Atlantic coast against pirate attacks.

The Tower of Tajo was built as a link to the towers of Trafalgar and Barbate, but signalling visibility between them was inadequate, so in the eighteenth century it was ordered that the Tower of Mecca be built. In this way, the rooftop of the tower could be used as a viewpoint.

This tower is considered to be the second tallest tower in the province standing at around fourteen metres high. It has a truncated cone shape and a single vaulted room which is seven metres high and six metres in diameter, with an oculus positioned here allowing communications with the roof. Due to its defensive nature, the entrance is placed at a height of 4 metres.

La Torre del Tajo, también conocida como Torre de la Tembladera se construyó entre 1585 y 1588, se reformó en el siglo XVIII y fue restaurada posteriormente en 1992 por la Junta de Andalucía. Está levantada al borde de un acantilado de cien metros de altura, dentro del Parque Natural de La Breña y Marismas del Barbate. Está catalogada como un Bien de Interés Cultural, desde el año 1985.

En cuanto a su historia, nos remontamos a los siglos XV y XVIII, durante los cuales las costas mediterráneas sufrieron numerosos asaltos de piratas berberiscos. Dichos asaltos se debían a dos motivos: el enfrentamiento del Imperio turco contra las potencias cristianas europeas; y la expulsión de la población morisca y judía de España. Los objetivos de los piratas eran claros: robar y violar y raptar a las mujeres.

Debido a la sucesión de diversos ataques, en el siglo XVI, el Rey Felipe II ordenó crear una red de defensa en el litoral que se componía de diversas torres vigías con el objetivo de defender las costas atlánticas andaluzas de los ataques de los piratas.

La Torre del Tajo se construyó para unir las torres de Trafalgar y Barbate, pero la visibilidad de las señales entre ellas no era la adecuada por lo que en el siglo XVIII se mandó a construir la Torre de Meca.

De esta manera, la azotea del castillete se habilitó como mirador.

Esta torre es considerada la segunda torre más alta de la provincia, con unos catorce metros de altura. Tiene forma de tronco de cono y posee una única sala abovedada de siete metros de altura y seis metros de diámetro donde se encuentra un óculo para facilitar la comunicación con el terrado. La puerta de entrada, debido a su carácter defensivo, está situada a 4 metros de altura.

Al terrado se accede mediante una escalera de caracol. Allí encontraremos la garita con forma de herradura y en la que antiguamente se refugiaba el torrero de las condiciones meteorológicas adversas.

Desde el mirador, podemos disfrutar de agradables vistas. Si miramos hacia el sur veremos Barbate, la Atunara y la ensenada de Barbate. También veremos la Sierra del Retín, Zahara de los Atunes, Sierra Plata y San Bartolomé y Punta Camarinal. En los días más soleados podremos contemplar Tarifa incluso la costa de África.

The roof is accessed by a spiral staircase. There, a horseshoe-shaped sentry box can be found in which the tower-guard would to take refuge from adverse weather conditions.

From the viewing platform, we can enjoy beautiful views. If we look south, we can see Barbate, the Atunara and the cove of Barbate. We can also see the Sierra del Retín, Zahara de los Atunes, Sierra Plata, San Bartolomé and Punta Camarinal. On very clear days we can also see Tarifa and even the coast of Africa.
