Welcome to our gorgeous May 2021 edition.

As things slowly start opening up and people get used to this new normality, I cling onto the hope we don’t forget we have our biggest challenge ahead of us. There are many people already directly facing the challenge of our Climate crisis. This is no longer something that may happen, this is now a fact that people are feeling the effects of to-day. I urge you all to look within yourselves and think about what we can all do as individuals to help. This is a problem that will affect us all and it will take us all to find a solution to it. There will be no easy quick fix.

The answer only lies in every one of us to do what we know is right for our future generations, after all, if it’s not for them then who do we strive for. Check out our monthly advice on how to adjust your lifestyle to a more sustainable one from the guys at Eco Passion. There is a downloadable version which can be used as a planner, tackle one small thing every month you will be amazed on how easier your life has become by adapting to a more sustainable lifestyle – it is, after all, the only way to secure our future.

I wish to thank everyone that has supported our Good Friday Cycle event. The aim of this was to create a focus on our increasing cycling community and promote safer cycling locally. Check out page 26 for all the amazing selfies and footage.

A medida que las cosas comienzan a abrirse lentamente y la gente se acostumbra a esta nueva normalidad, me aferro a la esperanza de que no olvidemos que nuestro mayor desafío todavía sigue por delante. Hay muchas personas que se enfrentan directamente al desafío de nuestra crisis climática. Esto ya no es algo que pueda suceder, es un hecho que la gente está sintiendo los efectos en el día de hoy. April has been a very exciting month for OTWO –We have officially signed a collaboration agreement with COAMBA (Colegio de Ambientologos de Andalucia.) They have acknowledged the efforts made by this magazine creating awareness on this issue and have agreed to work with us bringing regular contributions to our platform and sharing their experiences and solutions. We have great expectations from this agreement, much more to come in months to follow. This month we start with an article from David Fernandez Caldera and Rubén Rodríguez Ramírez regarding a study done on safer road infrastructure in Granada. It is very interesting and hopeful to see how many different cities are trying to combat a similar issue – the excessive use of private vehicles to tackle pollution and congestion issues. It’s a simple idea, instead of busing children to school, creating fun filled routes for them to walk to school in groups. Why not I say.

This month we share a very exciting new project being undertaken by Cloud Nine in Spain. The upcycling of shipping containers to create Eco builds just across the border in Marbella. “The German Schween family of architects and developers and real estate expert Sean Woolley from Cloud Nine Spain are passionate about how this innovative way of building can reduce our carbon footprint and reduce pressure on raw materials. They hope that The Astonishing Collection will enable buyers to save time, save money and protect the planet from the environmental harm caused by traditional building practices.” Check out these gorgeous builds on page 40. Ha tenido tanto éxito que hemos decidido organizar otro gran evento para el Día Mundial del Ciclismo: el jueves 2 de junio. Este será un evento mucho más multitudinario y completo, ya que las restricciones de Covid se han levantado y ahora podemos reunirnos en grupos. Estad atentos, seguiremos informando. Abril ha sido un mes muy emocionante para OTWO: hemos firmado oficialmente un acuerdo de colaboración con COAMBA (Colegio de Ambientologos de Andalucia). Han reconocido los esfuerzos realizados por esta revista para concienciar sobre el medioambiente y han acordado trabajar con nosotros aportando contribuciones periódicas a nuestra plataforma y, compartiendo sus experiencias y soluciones. Tenemos grandes expectativas con este acuerdo que iremos desarrollando próximamente. Este mes presentamos un trabajo de David Fernández Caldera y de Rubén Rodríguez Ramírez sobre la infraestructura vial escolar más segura en Granada. Es muy interesante y esperanzador ver cuántas ciudades diferentes están tratando de combatir un problema similar: el uso excesivo de vehículos privados y así abordar los problemas de contaminación y congestión. Es una idea sencilla, en lugar de llevar a los niños a la escuela en autobús, crear rutas llenas de diversión para que vayan a la escuela en grupos. Y me pregunto ¿Por qué no?

En este número también mostramos un nuevo y emocionante proyecto que está llevando a cabo Cloud Nine en España. El reciclaje de contenedores de envíos para crear construcciones ecológicas al otro lado de la frontera, en Marbella. «La familia alemana de arquitectos y desarrolladores Schween y el experto en inmobiliaria Sean Woolley de Cloud Nine España sienten pasión por cómo esta forma innovadora de construcción puede reducir nuestra huella de carbono y reducir la presión sobre las materias primas. Esperan que The Astonishing Collection permita a los compradores ahorrar tiempo, ahorrar dinero y proteger el planeta del daño ambiental causado por las prácticas de construcción tradicionales». Collection “The flower of the month”

Bear’s Breaches

Many of the plants that we use in gardening in Gibraltar come from other parts of the world, but there are also many native Mediterranean species that are used in horticulture, including some that grow on the Rock.  The Bear’s Breaches is an extremely common plant in Gibraltar, widespread and often abundant in natural habitats.  It also grows naturally in gardens and is often considered a weed.  However, the species is highly valued as a garden plant elsewhere in the world including the UK, for its large, glossy foliage and tall white flower spikes.  Indeed, the species has been used successfully in horticulture in Gibraltar as well, at Commonwealth Park.  It grows from a tuber, disappearing completely during the summer only to develop leaves again in the autumn before flowering during the spring.  The large and very distinctive flowers of the Bear’s Breaches can only be pollinated by large bees and big black Xylocopa carpenter bees are often seen visiting them in their habitats throughout the Rock.  As can sometimes happen when plants are introduced to gardens, the species has become invasive in some of the places where it has been used for horticulture, such as Australia and New Zealand.

Muchas de las plantas que utilizamos en jardinería en Gibraltar proceden de otras partes del mundo, pero también hay muchas especies mediterráneas autóctonas que se utilizan en horticultura, incluidas algunas que crecen en el Peñón. Pie de oso es una planta muy común en Gibraltar, extendida y a menudo abundante en los hábitats naturales. También crece de forma natural en los jardines y suele considerarse una mala hierba. Sin embargo, la especie es muy apreciada como planta de jardín en otras partes del mundo, incluido el Reino Unido, por su gran y brillante follaje y sus altas espigas de flores blancas. De hecho, la especie se ha utilizado con éxito en la horticultura también en Gibraltar, en el Commonwealth Park. MENTAL HEALTH WEEK GOES GREEN

Local mental health charity Clubhouse Gibraltar has announced their programme and theme for this year’s mental health week.

The theme chosen by the Mental Health Foundation is ‘Nature’ and will highlight the importance and impact that being in nature has on mental health and will look at the barriers that impede some from sharing in the natural world.

The charity has also changed its colours from yellow to green, in line with the international green ribbon symbol used to represent Mental Health Awareness.

They will hold a ‘Wear Green Day’ on Wednesday 12th May and are also providing ‘green’ packages that include information and collection tins to those that would like to take part.

The schedule for Clubhouse Gibraltar Mental Health Week 2021 is as follows:

• Sunday 9th May: Event organised by the 2018 Nursing Students, Gibraltar #LetsGetMovingForMentalHealth.

•Monday 10th May: 11am Facebook Live with Emily Adamberry-Olivero M.B.E. & launch of virtual fundraising events.

•Tuesday 11th May: Testimonials (Clubhouse members & friends).

• Wednesday 12th May: Information stall & Wear Green Day.

La Semana de la Salud Mental se vuelve verde.

La organización benéfica local de salud mental de la Casa Club de Gibraltar ha anunciado su programa y tema para la semana de la salud mental de este año.

El tema elegido por la Fundación para la Salud Mental es “La Naturaleza” y destacará la importancia y el impacto que tiene estar en la naturaleza en la salud mental y analizará las barreras que impiden a algunos compartir el mundo natural.

La organización benéfica también ha cambiado sus colores de amarillo a verde, en consonancia con el símbolo internacional del lazo verde utilizado para representar la concienciación sobre la salud mental.

El miércoles 12 de mayo celebrarán un “Día de vestirse de verde” y también están proporcionando paquetes “verdes” que incluyen información y botes de recogida a aquellos que quieran participar.

El programa de la Semana de la Salud Mental de Gibraltar 2021 es el siguiente:

• Domingo 9 de mayo: Evento organizado por los estudiantes de enfermería 2018, Gibraltar #LetsGetMovingForMentalHealth.

U-MEE ANNOUNCE ‘CLEAN AND GREEN’ INITIATIVE

Local fibre broadband and TV service provider

U-mee has announced their new ‘Clean and Green’ initiative, setting a great example in schemes to make businesses environmentally friendly.

U-mee has updated its vehicle fleet to include electric vans, scooters and motorbikes. From now on, u-mee aim to carry out all customer installations, home service visits and deliveries using emission-free vehicles.

The company will track the impact of each journey made and set their performance against 100% emission-free targets. When unable to complete an

emission-free journey, they will use carbon credits through VSC approved carbon offsetting schemes that plant trees.

This new step already builds on the company’s existing environmentally friendly initiatives. These include using a GPON fibre network that delivers Gigabit fibre broadband with a lower environmental impact than alternative technologies, going ‘paperless’ and inhouse measures such as installing water filtrations systems to replace bottled water.

U-mee has also considered how customers interact with them. After the pandemic forced them to close the doors of their Eurotowers, they have decided to make the shop closure permanent and have introduced online ordering, combined with home deliveries to limit unnecessary customer journeys.

U-mee’s announcement concluded: “We believe that if every individual and corporate citizen plays its part going forward, Gibraltar can help address the global environmental challenge that faces us all and we encourage all u-mee customers to also do their bit.”

U-mee anuncia la iniciativa «Clean and Green (Limpio y verde)»

El proveedor local de servicios de banda ancha y televisión por fibra óptica U-mee ha anunciado su nueva iniciativa “Clean and Green”, que da un gran ejemplo de planes para que las empresas sean respetuosas con el medio ambiente.

U-mee ha actualizado su flota de vehículos para incluir furgonetas, scooters y motocicletas eléctricas. A partir de ahora, u-mee pretende llevar a cabo todas las instalaciones de los clientes, las visitas de servicio a domicilio y las entregas utilizando vehículos sin emisiones.

La empresa hará un seguimiento del impacto de cada viaje realizado y establecerá sus resultados en función de los objetivos de 100% libre de emisiones. Cuando no pueda realizar un viaje sin emisiones, utilizará créditos de carbono a través de sistemas de compensación de carbono aprobados por el VSC que plantan árboles.

Este nuevo paso se suma a las iniciativas ecológicas de la empresa. Entre ellas, el uso de una red de fibra GPON que ofrece banda ancha de fibra Gigabit con un impacto medioambiental menor que el de otras tecnologías alternativas, la eliminación del papel y medidas internas como la instalación de sistemas de filtración de agua para sustituir el agua embotellada.

U-mee también ha tenido en cuenta la forma en que los clientes interactúan con ellos. Después de que la pandemia les obligara a cerrar las puertas de sus EuroTorres, han decidido hacer permanente el cierre de la tienda y han introducido los pedidos en línea, combinados con las entregas a domicilio para limitar los desplazamientos innecesarios de los clientes.

El anuncio de U-mee concluye: “Creemos que, si cada ciudadano individual y corporativo pone de su

ESG, GHT & GONHS OPPOSE DEVELOPMENT PLANS AT SANDY BAY.

The Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS), Environmental Safety Group (ESG) and the Gibraltar Heritage Trust (GHT) have expressed their concerns over the negative impacts of the planned housing development due to be built on the slopes to the south of Both Worlds leading down to Sandy Bay.

With a lack of natural outdoor spaces in Gibraltar, the development would lead to the loss of a large outdoor area that has become increasingly popular for locals since the successful replenishing of the beach’s sand in 2014.

The three organisations issued a joint statement: Since it was replenished with sand, Sandy Bay has become a very popular beach both for locals and as part of Gibraltar’s more adventure-focused tourism offering.  Part of its appeal lies in its location and quite natural setting, framed by the slopes and Rock above, and the rocky shoreline to its north and south.  The land that is targeted for development currently consists of open, flower-filled habitat and includes WWII military structures.  It is enjoyed not just by beachgoers but also by the many people who walk by whilst exercising.

Our organisations are concerned that as depicted, the development would result in a very significant loss of public amenity, including for beach users.  The buildings would encroach on the beach itself and we consider this completely unacceptable.  The ramp down to the beach would be used for vehicular access to the development, making access trickier for users.  The loss of any natural habitat or heritage structures will without a doubt be detrimental to the enjoyment of the area by the public.

The three organisations will be following this proposal very closely.  Although the public consultation period for comments to the Development & Planning

Commission is now closed, we urge all concerned members of the public to make their views known to the Town Planner or our organisations.

ESG, GHT y GONHS se oponen a los planes de desarrollo en Sandy Bay.

La Sociedad de Ornitología e Historia Natural de Gibraltar (GONHS), el Grupo de Seguridad Medioambiental (ESG) y la Fundación del Patrimonio de Gibraltar (GHT) han expresado su preocupación por los impactos negativos de la urbanización prevista en las laderas al sur de Both Worlds que bajan a Sandy Bay.

Con la falta de espacios naturales al aire libre en Gibraltar, el desarrollo llevaría a la pérdida de una gran área al aire libre que se ha vuelto cada vez más popular para los lugareños desde la exitosa reposición de la arena de la playa en 2014.

Las tres organizaciones han emitido un comunicado conjunto:

Desde que se repobló con arena, Sandy Bay se ha convertido en una playa muy popular tanto para los lugareños como para la oferta de turismo de aventura de Gibraltar. Parte de su atractivo radica en su ubicación y en su entorno natural, enmarcado por las

laderas y el Peñón, y por la costa rocosa al norte y al sur. El terreno que se pretende urbanizar consiste actualmente en un hábitat abierto y lleno de flores, e incluye estructuras militares de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Lo disfrutan no sólo los bañistas, sino también las numerosas personas que pasan por allí mientras hacen ejercicio.

A nuestras organizaciones les preocupa que, tal y como se describe, la urbanización suponga una pérdida muy importante de la utilidad pública, incluso para los usuarios de la playa. Los edificios invadirían la propia playa y lo consideramos totalmente inaceptable. La rampa de bajada a la playa se utilizaría para el acceso de vehículos a la urbanización, lo que dificultaría el acceso de los usuarios. La pérdida de cualquier hábitat natural o de estructuras patrimoniales irá sin duda en detrimento del disfrute de la zona por parte del público.

Las tres organizaciones seguirán muy de cerca esta propuesta. Aunque el periodo de consulta pública para los comentarios a la Comisión de Desarrollo y Planificación ya está cerrado, instamos a todos los ciudadanos interesados a que den a conocer sus opiniones al Urbanista o a nuestras organizaciones. COLLABORATION AGREEMENT OTWO & COAMBA

The Directors and management team of the OTWO Magazine is proud to announce the signing of a collaboration agreement between the publication and the COAMBA (Colegio de Ambientologos de Andalucia) represented by its president Paola Jiménez.

COAMBA is the professional representative body of qualified environmentalists working in Andalusia and they have agreed to use the OTWO publication platform to showcase their many projects and initiatives to protect our environment and way of life.

Managing Director Vanessa Byrne said that it was indeed a proud moment for the young publication that has already established a reputation for content of the the highest standard.

The formal agreement was signed in Medina Sidonia a town with many historical links to Gibraltar.

La directora general Vanessa Byrne y el resto del equipo directivo de la revista OTWO se enorgullecen de anunciar la firma de un convenio de colaboración entre nuestra publicación y COAMBA (Colegio de Ambientologos de Andalucía) representado por su presidenta Paola Jiménez.

COAMBA es el organismo profesional de los ambientólogos colegiados en Andalucía y han acordado utilizar la plataforma de publicación OTWO para mostrar sus numerosos proyectos e iniciativas para proteger nuestro medio ambiente y forma de vida.

La directora general, Vanessa Byrne, dijo que de hecho fue un momento de orgullo para la joven publicación que ya se ha ganado una reputación por su contenido del más alto nivel.

According to Greenpeace, raising cows, pigs and chickens generates as much greenhouse gas emissions as all cars, trucks and automobiles combined and cattle ranchers destroy forests for grazing pastures.

They recommend becoming “meat conscious”, reducing the level of meat in our diets, by just a few meals per week, and sharing the changes with friends and family members to encourage them to do the same.

They explain “Shifting to more plant-based foods is essential to combatting climate change, soil, air and water pollution, ocean dead zones, and a myriad of other problems caused by industrial livestock production. If we decide to eat fewer meals with meat or dairy each week, we can have a huge impact on our collective health and the health of the planet.”

Challenge yourself to keep bringing down your meat consumption, as you progress through your journey, why not try Veganuary or vegan weekends and see how you can change your habits to become more eco-friendly.

Según Greenpeace, la cría de vacas, cerdos y pollos genera tantas emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero como la generada por todos los coches, camiones y automóviles híbridos, además de que los ganaderos destruyen los bosques para elpastoreo.

Recomiendan «omar consciencia con el consumo de carne», reducir la cantidad de carne en nuestras dietas a solo unas cuantas comidas a la semana y compartir los cambios con amigos y miembros de tu familia para animarlos a hacer lo mismo.

Explican que «El cambio a un estilo de alimentación basada en alimentos de origen vegetal es fundamental para combatir el cambio climático, la contaminación ambiental, del suelo y del agua, las zonas muertas de los océanos y otros miles de problemas causados por la producción ganadera industrial».

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is an independent statutory body entrusted with the preservation of Gibraltar’s heritage. It aims to work in partnership with all like-minded bodies, both locally and internationally. The Trust is responsible to the people of Gibraltar for the preservation and enhancements of all aspects of Gibraltar’s heritage, which includes promotion culturally, educationally and in terms of tourism both for our local population and internationally. It works closely with the Government of Gibraltar and the private sector in fulfilling its aims. Operating on a not for profit basis all funding for Trust projects are raised through our annual membership drive, our commercial activities or through specific project targeted fundraising. All funds generated are applied to achieving the aims and objectives of the Trust.

Un Viernes Santo de ciclismo

Good Friday saw over 100 local cyclists of all ages get together and take to Gibraltar’s roads to help raise awareness on the need for safer cycling conditions on the Rock.

The event, organised by OTWO and E-Bike Gibraltar, was not just a great day out but a collective effort by entire families and cycling enthusiasts to demonstrate just how many cyclists there are now in Gibraltar. The turnout showed the importance of improved road safety measures to keep cyclists safe and encourage even more people to start using bicycles.  In line with Covid gathering restrictions, the day saw groups of no more than 12 join the cycle route provided by the organisers. All with high spirits and a decrease in traffic due to the bank holiday, it was lovely to see so many families take to the road and enjoy this event. All participants were asked to take a selfie at their favourite spot in Gibraltar. All selfies were entered into a competition with two fantastic prizes on offer: a top of the range cycling helmet (donated by EBike Gibraltar, AWCP and POC) and a full day’s E-bike rental for a group of 12 with free entry to the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park. El Viernes Santo se reunieron más de 100 ciclistas locales de todas las edades y salieron a las carreteras de Gibraltar para ayudar a concienciar sobre la necesidad de unas condiciones más seguras para el ciclismo en el Peñón.

El evento, organizado por la OTWO y E-Bike Gibraltar, no sólo fue un gran día, sino un esfuerzo colectivo de familias enteras y entusiastas del ciclismo para demostrar cuántos ciclistas hay ahora en Gibraltar. La participación demostró la importancia de mejorar las medidas de seguridad vial para mantener la seguridad de los ciclistas y animar a más personas a empezar a utilizar la bicicleta. De acuerdo con las restricciones de reunión de Covid, el día vio grupos de no más de 12 personas que se unieron a la ruta ciclista proporcionada por los organizadores. Con mucho ánimo y una disminución del tráfico debido al día festivo, fue encantador ver a tantas familias salir a la carretera y disfrutar de este evento. Se pidió a todos los participantes que se hicieran un selfie en su lugar favorito de Gibraltar. However, several low-cost measures could be implemented easily and quickly, resulting in a significant improvement in road safety for cyclists and awareness amongst vehicle drivers. Some of the suggestions for road safety improvements are:

• Advanced Stop Boxes. These are areas marked out on a road that provide cyclists with a safe spot to stop in front of vehicles at busy traffic crossings or traffic lights, allowing cyclists time to get going again when traffic lights change or pull off at busy intersections.

• Signage and Street Stencils.  Promoting awareness of cyclists on our roads and for drivers to be more cautious.

• Educational Advertising and awareness campaigns to improve cycling on the Rock, create a safer cycling environment, raise driver awareness and education and promote the importance of greener modes of transport.

There are more cyclists than ever before in Gibraltar, and with promises to create a greener, cleaner Gibraltar, more should be done to help keep cyclists safe and encourage cycling uptake. Measures that show a commitment to protect all road users will reassure budding cyclists that getting around by bicycle is safe, healthy and fun.

OTWO would like to thank all of the participants for joining the event and thank all the local organisations and the Gibraltar Government for their support. It was a great day, with an incredible turn out which showed just how many people want cycling conditions to improve in Gibraltar.

Los organizadores reconocieron que, en un clima económico posterior a la crisis, buscar una inversión a gran escala en infraestructura ciclista sería poco realista a corto plazo. Sin embargo, varias medidas de bajo coste podrían aplicarse fácil y rápidamente, lo que supondría una mejora significativa de la seguridad vial para los ciclistas y la concienciación de los conductores de vehículos. Algunas de las sugerencias para mejorar la seguridad vial son

• Cajas de paradas avanzadas. Se trata de zonas delimitadas en la carretera que ofrecen a los ciclistas un lugar seguro para detenerse delante de los vehículos en los cruces o semáforos con mucho tráfico, lo que permite a los ciclistas tener tiempo para reanudar la marcha cuando cambian los semáforos o se detienen en las intersecciones con mucho tráfico.

• Señalización y plantillas de calles. Promover la concienciación sobre los ciclistas en nuestras carreteras y que los conductores sean más precavidos.

• Publicidad educativa y campañas de concienciación para mejorar el uso de la bicicleta en el Peñón, crear un entorno ciclista más seguro, concienciar y educar a los conductores y promover la importancia de los medios de transporte más ecológicos. En Gibraltar hay más ciclistas que nunca, y con las promesas de crear un Gibraltar más verde y limpio, se debería hacer más para ayudar a mantener la seguridad de los ciclistas y fomentar el uso de la bicicleta. Las medidas que muestren el compromiso de proteger a todos los usuarios de la vía pública tranquilizarán a los ciclistas en ciernes de que desplazarse en bicicleta es seguro, saludable y divertido.

La OTWO quiere dar las gracias a todos los participantes por unirse al evento y agradecer a todas las organizaciones locales y al Gobierno de Gibraltar su apoyo. Fue un gran día, con una increíble participación que demostró cuánta gente quiere que las condiciones del ciclismo mejoren en Gibraltar.

Astrophysicists tell us that just 11.2 billion years ago, two super-giant neutron stars collided, and from this “kilonova”, as they call such a tremendous cosmic spectacle, gold and platinum originated and spread throughout the universe.

Artisans already knew this chemical element four thousand years before Christ and apart from its uses in gold smiting, medicine or speculative value, this precious metal also enjoys a particular and eccentric relevance in gastronomic customs.

Already in ancient Egypt, the pharaohs tasted dishes on which gold particles were sprinkled. This tradition continued in Hebrew culture, which narrates how on one occasion a blacksmith, following Moses’ instructions, made a bread called “manna” by crushing gold in a mortar until it turned into powder. Also in the Talmud it is narrated the arrival of Alexander the Great to Jerusalem and when he visited a village he was received with an offering of bread covered with gold flakes. In addition, there are even reports that many Taoist monks dedicated their lives to making edible gold in order to embrace eternity.

Perhaps that word invades me when I look at the sky of Puerto de Santa María. I have arrived here, without passing through Cádiz —only I know the reasons— to get to know an innovative proposal for the only edible rock. Invited by the Ubeda brothers I visit the Salina de la Tapa and Marivelez, they belong to the third generation of a family of salineros, with over a hundred years of experience and whose knowledge was passed from father to son since 1905 in the historic Salina de Cabo de Gata in Almeria. Moreover, if it is impressive to know the stellar origin of gold, it is no less impressive to know the origin of salt and the delicate conjunction between seawater, wind and sun, interacting through the circuits of the lagoons to achieve the evaporation and concentration necessary for it to crystallize.

That is why when Manuel and Juan José introduced me to their Goldsal product I was knocked out in one fell swoop. They have created an exclusive product by combining in the same container the flower of salt taken from the thin layer that forms on the threshing floors of the maritime saltpans, harvested manually with delicate care in the early hours of the morning and mixed with flakes of edible 24-carat

También en el Talmud se narra la llegada de Alejandro Magno a Jerusalén y al visitar una aldea fue recibido con una ofrenda de panes cubiertos con copos de oro. E incluso existen noticias de que muchos monjes taoístas dedicaban sus vidas para conseguir fabricar el oro comestible y así conseguir abrazar la eternidad.

Quizá sea esa la palabra que me invade cuando miro al cielo del Puerto de Santa María. He llegado hasta aquí, sin pasar por Cádiz —sólo yo se las razones— para conocer una innovadora propuesta para la única roca comestible. Invitado por los hermanos Úbeda visito la Salina de la Tapa y Marivélez, ellos pertenecen a la tercera generación de una familia de salineros, con más de cien años de experiencia y cuyo conocimiento fue pasando de padres a hijos desde 1905 en la histórica Salina de Cabo de Gata en Almería.

Y si impresiona conocer el origen estelar del oro, no lo es menos el de la sal y la delicada conjunción entre el agua marina, el viento y el sol, interactuando por los circuitos de las lagunas hasta conseguir la evaporación y la concentración necesarias para que cristalice.

From a transformative vision, it is the process by which the accessibility of the school community is naturalized through a network of itineraries with pedestrian preference, non-exclusive, or with minimum pedestrian safety, with origin-destination to schools where everyone, students, families, can access in an active, healthy, safe, universal and more autonomous way. This network of routes or paths could also improve mobility conditions for the rest of the municipality.

Although it emerges from the attention to the figure of the most vulnerable citizenship; childhood, and as a response to its most emblematic forced displacement; the school, it seeks to transcend and extend as a response to improve the conditions of habitability, stay, displacement, construction, coexistence and urban enjoyment for all citizens at all times. Therefore, starting from intragenerational complicity, childhood, aims to reach all citizens through intergenerational equity.

Granada Network of Municipalities towards Sustainability of the Provincial Council of Granada, where it was found that, in recent years, the main traffic problems in small and medium-sized municipalities in the province of Granada are concentrated in the traffic jams that occur daily at the entrances and exits of schools due to the irrational use of private vehicles.

It should not be forgotten that children are more vulnerable to air pollution as they breathe greater volumes of air per kilogram of weight than the adult population.

Health improvement: Active travel results in better physical condition. We avoid a sedentary lifestyle and combat obesity, an epidemic that is becoming more and more frequent among children. With this daily exercise, we also increase muscle tone and contri-

Paulatinamente se fueron implantando proyectos de accesibilidad infantil saludable, segura y socialmente equitativas, en los municipios en diversos municipios de la provincia de Granada que quisieron avanzar en los objetivos de sostenibilidad y por ende en la mejora de las condiciones ambientales, sociales y de salud de sus habitantes. En el año 2015 los Caminos Escolares Seguros promovidos por la Diputación de Granada fueron reconocidos por la Comisión Europea a través de la Iniciativa CIVITAS CAPITAL.

Igualmente, fue galardona con el Premio a las Buenas Prácticas en Educación Ambiental por la Federación Andaluza de Municipios y Provincias en 2013.

Aspectos que favorecen el desplazamiento activo andando al colegio

Mejora de la calidad medioambiental: al descender el número de vehículos que circundan las vías se reducen los atascos, desciende el nivel de CO2 emitido, el ruido y la contaminación se reduce, mejorando la calidad del aire. No hay que olvidar que la infancia es más vulnerable a la contaminación atmosférica al respirar mayores volúmenes de aire por kilo de peso que la población adulta.

Mejora para la salud: Realizar un desplazamiento activo redunda en unas mejores condiciones físicas.

Evitamos el sedentarismo y combatimos la obesidad, una epidemia cada vez más frecuente entre la población infantil. Con este ejercicio diario aumentamos, además, el tono muscular y contribuimos a potenciar nuestra aptitud física y cardiorrespiratoria. Aparcamos el estrés relacionado con atascos y embotellamientos para practicar ejercicio físico diario.

Improves self-esteem and provides autonomy: Adopting this daily routine strengthens children’s self-esteem, as well as the responsible assumption of risks adapted to their capacity and competence, favoring autonomy.

Increases road safety. By reducing the presence of motor vehicles and their associated risks, we recover public space for pedestrians and increase safety. Lower costs: Both individually and collectively, it is more economical to abandon the private motor vehicle for obligatory trips, since fuel and maintenance costs are saved.

Project development

The implementation of an Action Plan generated with the participation of an intermunicipal Working Group, as a “motor group”, called the Working Group for the Improvement of Children’s Mobility of the Provincial Council of Granada, is key to achieving success.

The proposed methodology for the operation of this driving group is based on action-research-participation (PAR), aimed at building a joint planning process for the implementation of the network of safe school roads. The Parents’ Associations, the neighborhood, the responsible politicians and technicians, the Local Police officers, the interested groups or individual neighbors and the school children are part of this driving group.

The methodological sequence begins with a self-diagnosis of the problem that is materialized in a collective mapping through accessibility audits in the

Aumenta la seguridad vial. Al reducir la presencia del vehículo a motor y su riesgo asociado recuperamos el espacio público para los peatones y aumenta la seguridad.

Disminuyen los costes: Tanto a título individual como colectivo abandonar el vehículo privado a motor en los desplazamientos obligados resulta más económico, ya que se ahorra en combustible y mantenimiento.

Desarrollo del Proyecto

La aplicación de un Plan de Acción generado con la participación de un Grupo de Trabajo intermunicipal, a modo de «grupo motor», denominado Grupo de Trabajo para la Mejora de la Movilidad Infantil de la Diputación de Granada, es clave para conseguir llegar a buen puerto.

La metodología propuesta de funcionamiento para este grupo motor se realiza siguiendo la investigación-acción-participación (IAP), orientada a construir una planificación conjunta del proceso de implantación de la red de caminos escolares seguros. Las Asociaciones de Padres y Madres, el vecindario, los políticos y técnicos responsables, los agentes de Policía Local, lo colectivos o vecinos a título individual interesados y los escolares forman parte de este grupo motor.

La secuencia metodológica se inicia con un autodiagnóstico del problema que se materializa en un mapeo colectivo mediante auditorías de accesibilidad en el entorno escolar y red viaria confluyente. A partir de aquí se evidencian las principales barreras del acceso peatonal seguro que priorizadas pasas a

school environment and confluent road network. From here, the main barriers to safe pedestrian access are identified and prioritized to form part of an emergency measures report. Subsequently, a “future scenarios” workshop is held where the individual aspirations of the driving group are verbalized and agreed upon in a joint vision that serves to establish the main guidelines for the drafting of its Action Plan.

The Action Plan will be unique for each municipality, although we have observed that it contemplates two areas; the Urbanistic and the Socio-educational. The Urbanistic includes the lines of action in infrastructure, traffic management, improvement of signage and urban beautification, the latter is often shared with the socio-educational, considering the public participation in it, which is enriched through communication, training and education.

Schoolchildren play a key role in this project and are vectors in both directions of the communication and education measures with the development of School Metrominutes, the Emotional Notebook and the Walker’s Explorer or participation in the follow-up of the Action Plan through the participation bodies such as the environmental committee or the children’s councils.

Posteriormente, se desarrolla un taller de “escenarios de futuro” donde se verbalizan las aspiraciones individuales del grupo motor y se consensuan en una visión conjunta que sirva para establecer las principales directrices para la redacción de su Plan de Acción.

El Plan de Acción será singular para cada municipio si bien hemos observado que contempla dos ámbitos; el Urbanístico y el Socioeducativo. El Urbanístico incluye las líneas de acción en infraestructuras, ordenación del tráfico, mejora de la señalización y embellecimiento urbano, ésta última es compartida en muchas ocasiones con la socioeducativa al considerarse la participación pública en ella y que se ve enriquecida mediante la comunicación, la formación y la educación.

Los escolares tienen una acción clave en este proyecto y son vectores en ambas direcciones de las medidas de comunicación y educación con la elaboración de Metrominutos Escolares, el Cuaderno Emocional y Explorador del Caminante o la participación en el seguimiento del Plan de Acción mediante los órganos de participación como el comité ambiental o los consejos de infancia.

In the March edition we were able to learn about the project that La Guardia de Jaén is carrying out to enhance the value of one of the jewels of its heritage: the Castle of La Guardia; but La Guardia de Jaén is not only its castle. This town is a historical and artistic ensemble to which we should pay attention.

Places to visit

The first traces of humanity in this territory date back to 4000 BC found in Cueva Cabrera. A place located in the Cerro de San Cristobal visitable through a well marked tourist route, perfect for enjoying a hiking trail which ends in a recreational area known as Allanadas del Santo. Where there are picnic areas and barbecues where you can enjoy a day in nature. Another vestige that remains in this municipality is the Visigoth Necropolis of Cerro del Salido. A large area of burial sites where different objects have been found and can be visited in the Provincial Museum of Jaén. Walking through this place, we can see dozens of tombs, some of them in a good state of preservation. In addition, La Guardia de Jaén has a rich heritage. As a monument, it is worth mentioning the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the best-preserved building of the old convent of Santo Domingo and both declared BIC in 1975. This church, decoratively, is pure classicist style of the sixteenth century, typical of Andrés de Vandelvira, the main Renaissance architect. With a Latin cross, plan with a single nave, respecting the patterns of the Dominican order, its chevet, on which the date of 1556 is engraved.

En la edición de marzo pudimos conocer el proyecto que La Guardia de Jaén está llevando a cabo para poner en valor una de las joyas de su patrimonio: el Castillo de La Guardia; pero, La Guardia de Jaén no solo es su castillo. Este pueblo es un conjunto histórico y artístico al que debemos prestar atención.

Lugares visitables

Los primeros vestigios de humanidad en este territorio datan del 4000 a.C. encontrados en Cueva Cabrera, un paraje situado en el Cerro de San Cristóbal visitable a través de una ruta turística bien señalizada perfecta para disfrutar de una ruta de senderismo la cual finaliza en un área recreativa conocida como Allanadas del Santo donde existen merenderos y barbacoas donde poder disfrutar de un día en la naturaleza.

Otro vestigio que aún quedan este municipio es la Necrópolis Visigoda del Cerro del Salido, una gran superficie de enterramientos funerarios donde se han encontrado distintos objetos visitables en el Museo Provincial de Jaén. Paseando por este paraje podemos ver decenas de tumbas algunas en un buen estado de conservación.

Además, La Guardia de Jaén cuenta con un rico conjunto patrimonial. Como monumento cabe destacar la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, edificio mejor conservado del antiguo convento de Santo Domingo y ambos declarados BIC en 1975. Esta iglesia, decorativamente, es de estilo clasicista puro del siglo XVI, propio de Andrés de Vandelvira,

The ribbed vault of the transept, decorated in the upper part by coffers where scenes of the Passion are framed and open to the exterior through a slender lantern, is supported in its angles by four typically Vandelvirian semi-pillars, highlighting the detail of the corner of three edges as an elegant transition to the ribs. The main chapel has two venerated trumpets in the angles, in which the coats of arms of the patrons Rodrigo Messia and his wife Mayor de Fonseca are inscribed again, which are flanked by tenant angels. Presiding over the altar, a beautiful fresco painting with the coat of arms of the Order of the Brothers Preachers flanked by two greyhounds carrying torches in their jaws, which correspond to the emblems of the holy founder. At the foot of the church there is a high choir that is covered with a vault of three rings, in whose center is framed a relief of the Virgin of the Rosary, symbol par excellence of the Order.

Architecturally it is evident that this vault is later than Vandelvira, something that the texts attest to, and the foot of the church has a smaller wall thickness.

Near the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion, we also find other points of interest for which our town stands out.

In the first place, the Public Washhouse of the Second Republic is an endearing and outstanding place of La Guardia. Recently restored, it can be visited and enjoy the atmosphere, in it, you can observe the typical utensils of the time that the own neighbors have donated for its exhibition and that formerly they used to carry out their daily tasks of hygiene.

In the upper part of this Lavadero, we find an exhibition room “Fuente Lavadero” whose name honors this place.

Secondly, another of the most visited places in our town is the Historic Site “Plaza Isabel II”. Here are several monuments related to the sixteenth century and the Renaissance.

This complex was founded in 1566 by the first marquis, Gonzalo Messia Carrillo de Fonseca. The main purpose of this place was to illustrate the greatness of the marquisate recently granted by Philip II to the son of Rodrigo Messia Carrillo and Ponce de Léon and Doña Mayor de Fonseca y Toledo.

Gonzalo inherited the taste for architecture and the project initiated by his father to restructure the villa where he would be buried with his wife, Doña

principal arquitecto renacentista. Con planta de cruz latina de una sola nave, respetando los patrones de la orden dominica, destaca su cabecera, en la que está grabada la fecha de 1556.

La bóveda nervada del crucero, decorada en la parte superior por casetones donde se enmarcan escenas de la pasión y abierta al exterior a través de una esbelta linterna, es soportada en sus ángulos por cuatro semipilares típicamente vandelvirianos, destacando en ellos el detalle del esquinazo de tres aristas como elegante tránsito a los nervios. La capilla mayor posee dos trompas aveneradas en los ángulos, en las que se inscriben nuevamente los escudos de los patronos Rodrigo Messía y su esposa Mayor de Fonseca, los cuales son flanqueados por ángeles tenantes. Presidiendo el altar, una bella pintura al fresco con el escudo de la Orden de los Hermanos Predicadores flanqueado por dos galgos que portan antorchas en sus fauces, los cuales responden a los emblemas del santo fundador. A los pies de la iglesia se presenta un alto coro que es cubierto con bóveda de tres anillos, en cuyo centro se enmarca un relieve de la Virgen del Rosario, símbolo por excelencia de la Orden.

Arquitectónicamente es evidente que esta bóveda es posterior a Vandelvira, algo de lo que dan constancia los textos, poseyendo además los pies del templo un grosor de muro menor.

Cerca de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción también encontramos otros puntos de interés por los que nuestro pueblo destaca.

En primer lugar, el Lavadero Público de la Segunda República es un lugar entrañable y destacado de La Guardia. Restaurado recientemente, se puede visitar y disfrutar del ambiente, en él, se pueden observar los utensilios típicos de la época que los propios vecinos y vecinas han donado para su exposición y que antiguamente utilizaban para realizar sus tareas cotidianas de higiene.

En la parte de arriba de este Lavadero encontramos una sala de exposiciones “Fuente Lavadero” cuyo nombre hace honor a este lugar.

En segundo lugar, otros de los lugares muy visitados de nuestro pueblo es el Conjunto Histórico Plaza Isabel II. Aquí se encuentran varios monumentos en relación al siglo XVI y al Renacimiento.

Este conjunto fue fundado en 1566 por el primer marqués, Gonzalo Messía Carrillo de Fonseca. Este

Currently, this complex is divided into what would be two squares separated by the main street (Calle Meson). In the upper square, there was a market until the mid-twentieth century, which is why many Guardeños still know it as the market square.

This upper square was remodeled around the 80’s to offer the appearance it had at the time of its construction, XVI century. Thus, a replica of the fountain of the Convent of Santo Domingo or Fountain of Maria Magdalena was rebuilt. This fountain was moved to this square when La Guardia became a marquisate (1566).

In the lower square is what would be the residence of the lord of the marquisate, later known as the Stone Manor House (1833). Next to this house is the Pilar de los Cinco Caños (Pillar of the Five Spouts) where once was the Fountain of the Plaza de Isabel II. Currently the Town Council of La Guardia de Jaén is negotiating the purchase of this manor house with the aim of making it part of the public patrimony.

As for the fountain, it dates from the XVI century and was built in ashlar masonry and landscape design. The canvas is articulated in two bodies: The first has five protruding copper pipes, with venerated niches, and a central cartouche with an inscription. The second has an oval shield supported by dogs, with a pediment and a crown of lions with the cross of Santiago.

Popular festivals

La Guardia de Jaén also has a series of popular festivals, which make this place is much visited. At the end of January, the festivities are held in honor of our patron San Sebastian, which lasts three days and is notable for its various religious events.

The highlight of this celebration happens when the image of the patron, always accompanied by a branch of orange tree loaded with its fruit, is locked in his temple, while he is dismissed by the excited applause of the guardeños, the national anthem and numerous salvos, both hunting shotguns and firecrackers, in honor of the military status of the saint. The military salvos charge the characteristic air of these festivities with the intense smell of gunpowder, from its departure from the temple and throughout the en-

Gonzalo heredó el gusto por la arquitectura y el proyecto iniciado por su padre para reestructurar la villa en donde sería enterrado junto con su esposa, doña Mayor de Fonseca, hija del arzobispo de Santiago de Compostela, Alonso de Fonseca.

Actualmente, este conjunto se encuentra dividido en lo que sería dos plazas separadas por la calle principal (calle Mesón). En la plaza superior se encontraba un mercado de abastos hasta mediados del siglo XX, es por esto, que muchos guardeños siguen conociéndola como la plaza de abastos.

Esta plaza superior fue remodelada alrededor de los años 80 para ofrecer el aspecto que tenía en la época de su construcción, siglo XVI. Así, se volvió a construir por ejemplo una réplica de la fuente del Convento de Santo Domingo o Fuente de María Magdalena, dicha fuente se trasladó a esta plaza al convertirse La Guardia en marquesado (1566). En la plaza inferior se encuentra lo que sería la residencia del señor del marquesado, más tarde conocida como la Casa solariega de Piedra (1833). Junto a esta casa, se encuentra el Pilar de los Cinco Caños donde en su día fue la Fuente de la Plaza de Isabel II. Actualmente el Ayuntamiento de La Guardia de Jaén está negociando la compra de esta Casa Solariega con el objeto de que forme parte del patrimonio público.

En cuanto a la fuente, esta data del S. XVI fue construida en sillería y traza apaisada. El lienzo se articula en dos cuerpos: El primero, tiene cinco caños de cobre salientes, con hornacinas veneradas, y una cartela central con una inscripción. El segundo, presenta un escudo ovalado sostenido por perros, con frontón y remate de leones con la cruz de Santiago.

Fiestas populares

La Guardia de Jaén también cuenta con una serie de fiestas populares, las cuales hacen que este lugar sea muy visitado. A finales del mes de Enero, se celebran las fiestas en honor a nuestro patrón San Sebastián, cuya duración es de tres días y destaca por sus distintos actos religiosos.

This town is also known for the pilgrimage in honor of San Sebastian. It is held during the third weekend of May. This festivity disappeared because of the Civil War and was not recovered until the 1980s. It consists of a procession through “las Allanadas del Santo” during Saturday afternoon. The Saturday evening takes place in the enclosure with the beginning of a pilgrimage weekend, which will last until Sunday night. After the religious ceremonies on Sunday morning, the people of Guardeño spend a festive day in the countryside, which concludes in the evening with the procession of the image through the site and the return of the pilgrims to the town at dusk.

Other popular festivities that are part of this town are held in summer, specifically on August 10, in honor of the Divina Pastora. These festivities are a reason for emigrants to visit their hometown and reunite with family and friends.

The Guardeños begin this fair with their traditional gala “Villa de La Guardia”, which is already more than a decade old and involves young and old, of all ages with performances and shows for the enjoyment of neighbors and visitors.

This festival is also known for its traditional burning of pyromusical fireworks from the castle of La Guardia that announces the end of the festivities, on the last day of the fair, which is followed by the release of heifers of fire through the town center of the town.

La Guardia de Jaén - Puerta de Culturas is the slogan that this town uses and that honors this entire cultural, historical and artistic heritage worthy of being visited.

Las salvas militares cargan el aire característico de estas fiestas con el intenso olor a pólvora, desde su salida del templo y a lo largo de todo el recorrido hasta su regreso al mismo, las calles se engalanan de arcadas cubiertas de ramas de pino y luces a lo largo del recorrido procesional. Este pueblo también es conocido por la Romería en honor a San Sebastián. Se realiza durante el tercer fin de semana del mes de mayo. Esta festividad desapareció a causa de la Guerra Civil y no fue recuperada hasta los años 80. Consiste en una procesión por “las Allanadas del Santo” durante la tarde del sábado. La velada del sábado transcurre en el recinto con el comienzo de un fin de semana romero, que se prolongará hasta la noche del domingo. Tras los actos religiosos de la mañana del domingo, los guardeños pasan en un ambiente festivo una jornada campera que concluye al caer la tarde con la procesión de la imagen por el paraje y el regreso de los romeros a la localidad al anochecer.

Otras de las fiestas populares que forman parte de este pueblo se celebran en verano, en concreto, el día 10 de agosto, en honor a la Divina Pastora. Estas fiestas es motivo por el que los emigrantes visitan el pueblo natal y se reencuentran con sus familiares y amigos.

Los guardeños comienzan esta feria con su tradicional gala “Villa de La Guardia” que supera ya más de una década y en ella participan jóvenes y mayores, de todas las edades con actuaciones y espectáculos para el disfrute de los vecinos y de los visitantes.

Esta festividad es también conocida por su tradicional quema de fuegos artificiales piromusicales del castillo de La Guardia que anuncia el fin de fiestas, el último día de la feria, donde posteriormente se realiza la suelta de vaquillas de fuego por el casco urbano de la localidad.

La Guardia de Jaén - Puerta de Culturas es el eslogan que esta localidad utiliza y que hace honor a todo este patrimonio cultural, histórico y artístico digno de ser visitado.

3rd Annual Gibraltar Sustainable Awards 2021

In Collaboration with the Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses, The Nautilus Project are hosting the 3rd Gibraltar Sustainable Awards. These are open to all local organisations, businesses, charities and clubs.

Moroccan architecture is one of the most characteristic features of the country and one of the main reasons why tourists choose it as a destination. Its kasbahs, palaces, mosques, riads... are world famous and deservedly so. However, today we are not going to talk about the sybaritism or the sensuality of the Maghrebi monuments worthy of the tales of a thousand and one nights, but about something more prosaic and no less interesting, the popular dwellings of the inhabitants of the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar.

There is no standardized type of traditional rural housing typical of the Rif territories. On the contrary, almost every tribe, every aduar (mountain village) builds in a different way and very much in accordance with the available materials and the prevailing climate in the immediate environment of its inhabitants. There are occasions where the hut is a simple extension of the earth and remains practically fused with the landscape, unnoticed by the untrained eye. Stone, mud, logs and branches are enough to build a basic and perfectly functional Rifian dwelling. At other times, the main raw material that makes up its walls is adobe. Today, however, it is not strange to see how traditional constructions are mixed with brick houses, only assumable by those who have access to monetize crops of certain prized products for export to the other side of the Strait.

As for their typology, we can distinguish three different types of buildings: the huts, known in the region as “asibs”, the isolated Rifian dwelling as

Sin embargo, hoy no vamos a hablar del sibaritismo o la sensualidad de los monumentos magrebíes dignos de los cuentos de las mil y una noches, sino de algo más prosaico y no por ello menos interesante, las viviendas populares de los habitantes de la orilla sur del Estrecho de Gibraltar. No hay un tipo estandarizado de vivienda rural tradicional propio de los territorios del Rif. Por el contrario, casi cada tribu, cada aduar (aldea de montaña) construye de una manera distinta y muy en consonancia con los materiales disponibles y el clima reinante en el entorno más inmediato de sus moradores. Hay ocasiones donde la choza es una simple prolongación de la tierra y permanece prácticamente fundida con el paisaje, inadvertida para el ojo no entrenado. Piedra, barro, troncos y ramas se bastan para armar una vivienda rifeña básica y perfectamente funcional. En otras ocasiones, la principal materia prima que compone sus muros es el adobe. Hoy, sin embargo, no es extraño ver cómo se mezclan construcciones tradicionales con casas de ladrillo, solo asumibles por aquellos que tienen acceso a monetizar cosechas de determinados productos preciados para la exportación hacia el otro lado del Estrecho.

En cuanto a su tipología, podemos distinguir

Most often, in certain areas, the huts become larger, more solid, complex and internally compartmentalized dwellings, designed according to the function of each of their rooms. It is still possible to observe in the mountains the traditional typology of this type of popular constructions, although in recent years most of the roofs made of vegetable matter have been replaced by galvanized steel, which requires much less maintenance and, above all, avoids many domestic accidents, since one of the age-old problems of this type of housing is the ease with which the roofs burn when they come into contact with the sparks caused by the fires lit for cooking or to provide heating for the house during the winter.

The typical Rifian dwelling is a rectangular construction of one or two floors, surrounding a partially covered inner courtyard. It constitutes a family unit in a broad sense, since it is not uncommon for it to house, under the same roof, up to three different generations of the same lineage. Made of adobe bricks or stone cemented with mud and lime mortar, it is usually covered on the outside with a protective layer of adobe and a second layer of thinner clay or painted with lime.

De estás últimas no vamos a hablar en este momento, a pesar que es en ellas donde se conservan los retazos más claros de la arquitectura andalusí, como el uso del ladrillo macizo de barro y la teja andaluza, que es como se la llama en todo el mundo árabe.

Obviamente, el más simple modelo de vivienda rural es la cabaña, construida con piedra —casi siempre en seco— y vigas de madera que soportaban un tejado de materia vegetal que varía según las zonas. En los aduares de los alrededores del Jbel Kelti y el Jbel Kelaa o en zonas de tribu Beni Said, las cabañas tienen el techo plano, pero la materia vegetal se mezcla con barro para lograr una mayor impermeabilización y resistencia a las inclemencias del tiempo. En ocasiones, en otras tribus hemos visto techos de lajas de piedra a modo de tejas planas colocados a dos aguas. Otras veces, los techos se cubren completamente con manojos de palmito, también tenemos constancia del uso de panas de corcho superpuestas para techar en el Parque Natural de Bouhachem. Lo más frecuente es que, en determinadas zonas, las chozas se tornen en viviendas de mayor tamaño, más solidas, complejas e internamente compartimentadas y diseñadas según la función a la que se destine cada una de sus estancias. Aún es posible observar en la montaña la tipología tradicional de este tipo de construcciones populares, aunque en los últimos años la mayoría de los tejados facturados con materia vegetal se ha ido sustituyendo por acero galvanizado, que requiere mucho menos mantenimiento y, sobre todo, evita muchos accidentes domésticos, ya que uno de los problemas seculares de este tipo de viviendas, es la facilidad con la que ardían los techos cuando se ponían en contacto con las chispas provocadas por los fuegos encendidos para cocinar o para proveer de calefacción a la casa durante el invierno.

La vivienda rifeña típica es una construcción rectangular de una o dos plantas, que rodea a un patio interior parcialmente cubierto. Constituye una unidad familiar en sentido amplio, pues no es raro que acoja,

It is this roof that has practically disappeared completely since the middle of the last century, replaced by zinc or galvanized steel roofs. The framework of beams of different sizes, stacked against each other and with a layer of adobe on top, may seem crude, chaotic and improvised. In the last earthquakes that occurred in this century in Al Hoceima (2004 and 2016), unfortunately, many of the modern buildings made of brick collapsed, while old Rifian houses or the Moorish constructions remained standing next to them without any problems. Impressive.

They usually orient their main facade -if possibletowards the south. The complete unit is composed of rooms for the family, for the cattle and even to keep part of the harvest. Associated with it there is usually a small adjoining orchard for self-subsistence, although sometimes it is placed, when the land does not allow it, in places somewhat more removed from it. A bread oven on the outside, together with the piles of firewood stored as fuel, both for cooking and heating, and a small sheepfold, complete the structure of the Rifian housing complex.

The kitchen and living room are usually on the first floor, sometimes there is also a chicken coop and a small stable for one or, at most, two cows that provide milk, butter and leben to the family. Upstairs, insulated from the dampness of the ground, are the bedrooms, which are accessed by outside stairs, and the storerooms, which are climbed by ladders made of logs.

The center of family life, weather permitting, is the courtyard. It acts as the distribution center of the whole house, but it is also used for eating or, simply, for socializing and hanging out. Periodically its adobe floor is renewed by adding new layers, which results over time in the disappearance of irregularities and the smoothing of angles and corners, to give an appearance of organicity, coziness, comfort ... that in-

Es esta cubierta la que prácticamente ha desaparecido por completo desde mediados del siglo pasado, sustituida por techos de zinc o de acero galvanizado. Entre el techo y el sobretecho se dispone una especie de cámara o cobertizo elevado para el almacenamiento de grano, aperos, o lo que se tercie.

El armazón de vigas de distintos tamaños, apiladas unas contra otras y con una capa de adobe por encima, puede parecer burdo, caótico e improvisado. Sin embargo, otorga a la cubierta una plasticidad increíble y es producto de la sabiduría ancestral de sus pueblos. En los últimos terremotos acontecidos en este siglo en Alhucemas (2004 y 2016), desgraciadamente, muchos de los edificios modernos hechos de ladrillo se desplomaron, mientras que antiguas casas rifeñas o las construcciones morabíticas se mantuvieron en pie junto a ellos sin ningún tipo de problemas. Impresionante. Habitualmente orientan su fachada principal — si es posible— hacia el sur. La unidad completa se compone de estancias para la familia, para el ganado e incluso para guardar parte de la cosecha. Asociada a ella suele haber un pequeño huerto contiguo para la autosubsistencia, aunque a veces se coloca, cuando el terreno no lo permite, en lugares algo más retirados de la misma. Un horno de pan en el exterior, junto a las pilas de leña almacenadas como combustible, tanto para cocinar como para calentarse y un pequeño aprisco, completan la estructura del conjunto habitacional rifeño.

La cocina y el salón suelen estar en la planta baja, a veces también hay un gallinero y un pequeño establo para una o, a lo sumo, dos vacas que proveen de leche, de mantequilla y de leben a la familia. Arriba, aislado de la humedad del suelo, se sitúan los dormitorios a los que se accede por escaleras exteriores y

Periódicamente se renueva su suelo de adobe mediante la adición de nuevas capas, lo que resulta con el paso del tiempo en la desaparición de las irregularidades y en la suavización de ángulos y esquinas, hasta dar una apariencia de organicidad, de acogimiento, de comodidad… que invita a disfrutar sin más del paso del tiempo, embelesados por las fragancias de menta, hierbaluisa y azahar. Muchas veces los patios están decorados con frisos, cenefas o dibujos muy de estilo naif. A falta de caros azulejos, de papeles pintados o mosaicos, siempre se las apañan con vivos colorantes añadidos a la cal, en el que el rey de los zócalos es el omnipresente añil, pero donde no faltan los tonos rosados e incluso los verdes. El sentido cultural de la estética está a flor de piel y se refleja también en las viviendas, por muy humildes que sean sus propietarios.

Las ventanas exteriores pueden estar protegidas con rejas, concretamente por un tipo de reja artística realizada sin puntos de soldadura, con patrones curvos repetitivos unidos con grapas, del mismo modo que se trabajaba en Al Andalus durante la Edad Media. Los herreros rifeños se enorgullecen de mantener viva esa tradición artesana cientos de años después. Etnoarqueología en estado puro, La mayoría de los aduares rifeños son una amalgama desordenada de este tipo de viviendas independientes, por lo que es muy raro que cuenten con una estructura o trama urbana definida. Sólo en determinados casos, cuando adquieren un tamaño considerable, existen ciertos edificios públicos administrativos, educativos o religiosos. Sin embargo, gracias al esfuerzo ímprobo del aparato del estado prácticamente todos cuentan con acceso a agua potable, las más de las veces una fuente colectiva, y a la luz eléctrica. De este modo, la práctica totalidad de la población, por muy alejada que esté de los centros urbanos, disfruta de algunas comodidades básicas elementales y de un lugar donde mantener un punto de luz, enchufar la tele o cargar los omnipresentes teléfonos móviles.

For many of us, the colder months mean less time spent outdoors and less time moving about. Perhaps it is the risk of slipping on the icy sidewalks or trying to combat the blistering winds that keeps us indoors. However, keeping active is one of the most effective ways of protecting our health long-term. With childhood obesity rates rising around the globe, should we be doing more to encourage our children to be outdoors?

Our study of the month is focused on a cross-sectional design from a team out of Indiana University. They wanted to dive into the relationship between overweight children and whether the amount of greenspace surrounding their home impacted their risk of packing on the pounds. After looking at data on 7,334 children between the ages of 3 and 18, they had their answer. Did nature have its way?

Across the age groups, children in more densely populated areas like urban centres were at a reduced risk of becoming overweight if there was lots of vegetation around their home. The effect wasn’t nearly as strong in rural areas, perhaps due to superior access to green and blue spaces. Through the work of other researchers, we understand that more trees mean more visits to outdoor spaces for activity and play. Even when the weather is cool, we encourage you to take your little ones (or teens) outdoors.

Sin embargo, mantenerse activo es una de las formas más eficaces de proteger nuestra salud a largo plazo. Con el aumento de las tasas de obesidad infantil en todo el mundo, ¿deberíamos hacer más para animar a nuestros hijos a estar al aire libre?

Nuestro estudio del mes se centra en un diseño transversal de un equipo de la Universidad de Indiana. Querían investigar la relación entre los niños con sobrepeso y si la cantidad de espacio verde que rodeaba su casa influía en su riesgo de engordar. Tras examinar los datos de 7.334 niños de entre 3 y 18 años, obtuvieron su respuesta.

¿La naturaleza se salió con la suya?

En todos los grupos de edad, los niños de las zonas más densamente pobladas, como los centros urbanos, tenían menos riesgo de padecer sobrepeso si había mucha vegetación alrededor de su casa. El efecto no era tan fuerte en las zonas rurales, quizá debido al mayor acceso a los espacios verdes y azules. Gracias al trabajo de otros investigadores, sabemos que más árboles significan más visitas a los espacios exteriores para realizar actividades y jugar. Incluso cuando el tiempo es fresco, te animamos a que lleves a tus pequeños (o adolescentes) al aire libre.

Ensalada de bienvenida a la primavera de Nosha´s

A little citrus, a little crunch…

INGREDIENTS

Dressing ingredients

2 tablespoons orange juice.

1 tablespoon lemon juice.

3 tablespoons olive oil.

2 tablespoons sherry vinegar.

1 garlic clove, finely minced.

1/4  teaspoon salt.

1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Salad ingredients:

1/4 cup  toasted coconut flakes.

1/4 cup toasted almonds.

1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion.

6 cherry tomatoes halved .

2 mandarins peeled and sliced.

1 cup sliced and chopped pineapple.

3 large handfuls of baby spinach.   Fresh mint.

METHOD:

1. Make the dressing – mix, stir and set aside,

2. Toast the coconut and almond flakes.

3. Peel and slice oranges and pineapple.

4. Peel and thinly slice onion.

5. Wash and halve cherry tomatoes.

6. Place the baby spinach on a platter followed by the oranges and pineapple slices followed by rest of the ingredients .

7. Sprinkle with the toasted coconut and almonds.

8. Add the mint leaves and spoon over the dressing.

9. Serve immediately.

INGREDIENTES

Ingredientes del aderezo

2 cucharadas de zumo de naranja.

1 cucharada de zumo de limón.

3 cucharadas de aceite de oliva.

2 cucharadas de vinagre de jerez.

1 diente de ajo, finamente picado.

1/4 de cucharadita de sal.

1/4 de cucharadita de pimienta.

Salad ingredients:

1/4 de taza de copos de coco tostados.

1/4 de taza de almendras tostadas.

1/4 de taza de cebolla roja cortada en rodajas finas.

6 tomates cherry cortados por la mitad.

2 mandarinas peladas y cortadas en rodajas.

1 taza de piña cortada en rodajas y picada.

3 puñados grandes de espinacas tiernas. Menta fresca.

PREPARACIÓN:

1. Preparar el aderezo-mezclar, remover y reservar.

2. Tostar el coco y los copos de almendra.

3. Pelar y cortar en rodajas las naranjas y la piña.

4. Pelar y cortar en rodajas finas la cebolla.

5. Lavar y cortar por la mitad los tomates cherry.

6. Colocar las espinacas baby en una fuente, seguidas de las naranjas y las rodajas de piña y el resto de los ingredientes.

7. Espolvorear con el coco tostado y las almendras.

8. Añade las hojas de menta y vierte el aderezo con una cuchara.

9. Servir inmediatamente.

ADVENTURE IN THE SIERRA DE GRAZALEMA WATER TRAIL “TAVIZNA RIVER”.

Our adventure takes place in one of the best-known natural parks in Andalusia: Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

The river Tavina, which takes its name when passing through the hamlet of the same name is born a little further up in the “Nacimiento del Hondón”, with clean and clear water throughout the year. The Tavizna River joins a little further down the Río del Bosque to form the most important tributary of the Guadalete River, called Río Majaceite.

The water hiking consists of the descent along the parallel of a river, sometimes we will go through it, sometimes we will cross it and sometimes we will go along the outside. on we cross it again to return to the left of it. We climb a little and thanks to a safety handrail and our harnesses, we will overcome a small cut to reach a “canchal” or rocky ground that indicates the beginning of our water trail.

We will enjoy a wild and wild jungle landscape with the transparent water flowing at our feet. After about 30 to 45 minutes, we will arrive at the “presilla” where we will be able to jump with caution. We continue our way through this wonder of nature until we reach the Pontoon, but we will continue a few meters down where we can find an old “azud” and a small waterfall where we climb and we can leave the river.

AVENTURA EN LA SIERRA DE GRAZALEMA SENDERO ACUÁTICO «RÍO TAVIZNA»

Nuestra aventura se realiza en uno de los parques naturales más conocidos de Andalucía: Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema.

El río Tavina, que toma su nombre al pasar por la pedanía del mismo nombre nace un poco más arriba en el “Nacimiento del Hondón”, con agua limpia y transparente durante todo el año. El Río Tavizna se une un poco más abajo al Río del Bosque y formar el afluente más importante del río Guadalete, denominado Río Majaceite.

El senderismo acuático consiste en el descenso por la paralela de un río, a veces iremos dentro de él, a veces lo cruzamos y otras por el exterior. En esta parte del río, éste forma pequeñas pozas cristalinas, cascadas y toboganes naturales, de los cuales podremos disfrutar con la mayor seguridad y respeto a la naturaleza.

Para la aventura se dipondrá de todo el material técnico necesario: neoprenos 3 ó 5 mm según la temperatura, arnés, casco, y material técnico colectivo para la aventura.

El Sendero.

Tras dejar los vehículos en el conocido “Pontón”, nos equipamos para remontar el río, primero a la izquierda y luego lo cruzamos para llegar al sendero que conduce al Castillo de Aznalmara. Un poco más adelante volvemos a cruzarlo para volver a la izquierda del mismo. Trepamos un poquito y gracias a un pasamano de seguridad y nuestros arneses sortearemos un pequeño cortado para llegar a un “canchal” que nos indica el comienzo de nuestro sendero acuático.

Disfrutaremos de un paisaje selvático y salvaje con el correr del agua transparente a nuestros pies. Tras unos 30 a 45 minutos llegaremos a la “presilla” donde podremos dar algún saltito con precaución.

Continuamos nuestro camino por esta maravilla de la naturaleza hasta llegar al Pontón, pero contiuaremos unos metros más abajo donde podremos encontrar un antiguo “azud” y una pequeña cascada por la que treparemos y podremos salir el río.

Duración: Senderismo acuático: 3 a 4 horas.
