A Happy New Year to you all.

The start of the year again, how quickly time is going by…but how beautiful to see all that’s around us. Family, friends, and all of life’s blessings growing, feeling and sharing what’s around us. Life is indeed beautiful.

As 2022 ends and into 2023, I feel a sense of relief with the progress we have achieved in just one short year. Perhaps I am being a bit too optimistic but I do feel the world in general is much more environmentally aware, in fact more than ever before. A great example is the incredible achievements and innovative ideas shared at the Earth Shot Awards in November with such an increase in sustainable options available and so many people working hard to help our natural world. Gives a sense of hope for our children.

At OTWO we ended the year in such a great way. Back in February 2022 we were asked to apply for The Energy Globe Awards. These awards are one of today’s most prestigious environmental awards. It is awarded annually to projects saving our environment by personal action, sustainable projects, or campaigns for raising awareness in sustainability.

We submitted and application showcasing our collaboration with COAMBA and joint venture with Motricity. We gave our vision and dedication towards helping Gibraltar focus on sustainable transport. Providing a support system for cyclists and helping to improve the infrastructure locally to include cycle lanes. With this application we are so honored to announce that we have been awarded National Champions status for Gibraltar.

For 2023 we have many plans. Most of you will

have seen the two buses circling Gibraltar promoting sustainable transport – we plan to have this as an annual promotion. We feel that this is important to educate our drivers to help support an increase in cyclist to alleviate the amount of traffic congestion we have locally. We had an incredible support in 2022 with a total amount of 50 companies joining us in this promotion. A brilliant example of self-help, local companies coming together for the betterment of our working and living environment. A beacon for the way forward. Sure, we need the support of Government to lead and encourage this but not all action is theirs to have. The cooperate sector in Gibraltar is showing that it is also worried and will take its own initiatives.

We also are already planning our annual Eco Festival. After last year’s success we are already well on our way to making it bigger and better. Conversations with local and international bands, stall holders and marquees to make this one of Gibraltar’s main annual events.

This year also, we are also organizing an extra event to give a special focus to World Environment Day 2023 as part of our Green week initiative. This will be a held in a central location for all to access and enjoy. More to follow shortly but if you want to get involved, do not hesitate to contact the team.

Lots of exciting work to look forward to for 2023 –truly excited to see the opportunities that are unfolding. Grateful to you all as always for your constant support.

Feliz Año Nuevo a todos.

Otra vez empieza el año, qué rápido pasa el tiempo... pero qué bonito es ver todo lo que nos rodea. La familia, los amigos y todas las bendiciones de la vida creciendo, sintiendo y compartiendo lo que nos rodea. La vida es realmente hermosa.

A medida que 2022 llega a su fin y nos adentramos en 2023, siento alivio por los progresos que hemos logrado en tan sólo un año. Quizá esté siendo demasiado optimista, pero siento que el mundo en general es mucho más consciente del medio ambiente, de hecho más que nunca. Un gran ejemplo son los increíbles logros e ideas innovadoras que se compartieron en los Premios Earth Shot en noviembre, con tal aumento de opciones sostenibles disponibles y tanta gente trabajando duro para ayudar a nuestro mundo natural. Da una sensación de esperanza para nuestros hijos.

En la OTWO terminamos el año de una forma estupenda. En febrero de 2022 nos pidieron que presentáramos nuestra candidatura a los premios The Energy Globe Awards. Estos premios son uno de los galardones medioambientales más prestigiosos de la actualidad. Se conceden anualmente a proyectos que salvan nuestro medio ambiente mediante acciones personales, proyectos sostenibles o campañas de sensibilización en materia de sostenibilidad.

Presentamos una candidatura mostrando nuestra colaboración con COAMBA y la empresa conjunta con Motricity. Aportamos nuestra visión y dedicación para ayudar a Gibraltar a centrarse en el transporte sostenible. Proporcionando un sistema de apoyo a los ciclistas y ayudando a mejorar la infraestructura local para incluir carriles bici. Con esta solicitud nos sentimos muy honrados de anunciar que nos han concedido el estatus de Campeones Nacionales de Gibraltar.

Para 2023 tenemos muchos planes. La mayoría

de vosotros habréis visto los dos autobuses que circulan por Gibraltar promoviendo el transporte sostenible: tenemos previsto que sea una promoción anual. Creemos que es importante educar a nuestros conductores para que ayuden a aumentar el número de ciclistas y así aliviar la congestión de tráfico que tenemos en la zona. Tuvimos un apoyo increíble en 2022 con un total de 50 empresas que se unieron a nosotros en esta promoción. Un ejemplo brillante de autoayuda, de empresas locales que se unen para mejorar nuestro entorno laboral y vital. Un faro para el camino a seguir. Claro que necesitamos el apoyo del Gobierno para liderar y fomentar esto, pero no toda la acción les corresponde a ellos. El sector cooperativo de Gibraltar está demostrando que también se preocupa y tomará sus propias iniciativas.

Nosotros también estamos planeando ya nuestro Festival Ecológico anual. Tras el éxito del año pasado, ya estamos en camino de hacerlo más grande y mejor. Estamos en conversaciones con bandas locales e internacionales, puestos y carpas para convertirlo en uno de los principales acontecimientos anuales de Gibraltar.

Este año, además, estamos organizando un evento adicional para dar un enfoque especial al Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente 2023 como parte de nuestra iniciativa de la Semana Verde. Se celebrará en un lugar céntrico al que todos puedan acceder y disfrutar. Más información en breve, pero si quieres participar, no dudes en ponerte en contacto con el equipo.

Tenemos mucho trabajo por delante para 2023, y estamos muy ilusionados con las oportunidades que se nos presentan. Agradecida a todos vosotros, como siempre, por vuestro apoyo constante.

OTWO MAGAZINE WINS ENERGY GLOBE AWARD!

OTWO are delighted and honoured to have been selected for a National Energy Globe Award.

Founded in 1999 and organised by the independent Energy Globe Foundation in Austria, the Energy Globe Award is the most important award for sustainability worldwide. “ It is awarded annually to projects saving our environment by personal action, sustainable projects or campaigns for raising awareness in sustainability”.

Each year the world's best environmental projects are honoured with the international Energy Globe World Award, with thousands of projects considered from over 180 countries in the categories of life; Earth, Fire, Water and Air, as well

as the future-orientated category of Youth and a yearly special category.

The National awards then select a winner from each of the over 180 participating countries.

This year’s winners under the international categories for outstanding sustainability projects include reforestation and water harvesting projects, recycling projects and mini-grid energy projects in countries such as India, Rwanda and Ethiopia. This list of international winners and finalists can be found here.

OTWO Magazine was selected as a national winner for Gibraltar and is honoured to have been considered and selected.

La revista OTWO gana el Energy Globe Award

OTWO está encantada y honrada de haber sido seleccionada para un Premio Nacional Energy Globe.

Fundado en 1999 y organizado por la fundación independiente Energy Globe de Austria, el Energy Globe Award es el premio más importante a la sostenibilidad en todo el mundo. «Se concede anualmente a proyectos que salvan nuestro medio ambiente mediante la acción personal, proyectos sostenibles o campañas de sensibilización en materia de sostenibilidad».

CLUBHOUSE GIBRALTAR CELEBRATES

‘THE CLUBHOUSE INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATIONTM’ AND THE LAUNCH OF THE ‘FRIENDS OF CLUBHOUSE GIBRALTAR’ SCHEME.

Congratulations to Clubhouse Gibraltar for being awarded the Clubhouse International Accreditation™. In a press release, Clubhouse Gibraltar said “Over 320 Clubhouses worldwide operate on proven Standards that have been developed by Clubhouse International over the last two decades. Clubhouse International Accreditation™ is a symbol of quality and commitment to excellence. Accredited Clubhouses are universally recognised for operating in compliance with the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs”.

In early 2022, a Clubhouse International Faculty Team visited Clubhouse Gibraltar to spend time participating in each work unit, overseeing the work carried out by Clubhouse and assessing compliance with the International Standards.

“The Clubhouse International Faculty Team made some recommendations which will strengthen and improve our services. The Clubhouse community is working very hard, together, as a team to implement them.

“Clubhouse Gibraltar has grown from strength to

strength throughout the years. It was in 2013 that Clubhouse Gibraltar commenced the main component of our program, “The Work Ordered Day”, on a five-day week basis. It took a lot of hard work and training to get it off the ground. In January 2020, Clubhouse moved from Wellington Front to its new home on Main Street. The new premises and location, as well as the quality of the design and build, helps send a clear message that you no longer need to hide if you live with mental ill health, moving

away from the stigma and shame that has been attached to mental illness for so long.

“It is thanks to having fit-for-purpose premises, the hard work of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and especially its members, and the support of the community that Clubhouse Gibraltar now meets the International Standards. This week’s event was about celebrating this great achievement.

“Clubhouse Gibraltar would like to extend its gratitude to everybody who in one way or another has contributed to making Clubhouse Gibraltar what it is today”.

Clubhouse Gibraltar also announced its new scheme “Friends of Clubhouse Gibraltar”. For a small annual fee of £20, subscribers can officially become a Friend of Clubhouse where they will receive the Clubhouse annual report and an invitation to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) where subscribers can share their thoughts on Clubhouse operations and governance.

The Clubhouse Gibraltar 2020-2022 report is also now available. Due to the pandemic, the usual annual report has been compiled into two years. It includes some of the club's highlights and demonstrates the hard work the organisation has done, particularly throughout the very challenging lockdowns.

Felicidades a Clubhouse Gibraltar por haber sido galardonado con la Clubhouse International Accreditation™.

Costó mucho trabajo y formación ponerlo en marcha. En enero de 2020, Clubhouse se trasladó de Wellington Front a su nueva sede en Main Street. SUSTAINABILITY RESOURCES COLLECTION AT THE JOHN MACKINTOSH HALL LIBRARY

Gibraltar Cultural Services and the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations have partnered on a new initiative to establish a collection of resources that can be used to support people's engagement, learning and education on issues of sustainability.

The Sustainability Resources Collection (SRC) is now housed at the John Mackintosh Hall Library. A range of books is available for anyone to take out on loan and for use as a reference resource.

In a press release, Gibraltar Cultural Services said “Some of the resources are suitable for businesses seeking to engage employers in sustainability activities whilst others support the informal learning opportunities often inspired or supported by NGOs and/or community groups.

“There will also be a series of resources for educators and teachers so that they can bring sustainability alive in the curriculum and school grounds. This initiative supports those who are seeking to involve others in the transition towards a more sustainable future and forms part of HMGOG commitment to a greener Gibraltar. The range and number of resources will continue to be extended and updated as new resources become available”.

Colección de recursos para la sostenibilidad en la Biblioteca John Mackintosh Hall

Los Servicios Culturales de Gibraltar y la Oficina del Comisionado para el Desarrollo Sostenible y las Generaciones Futuras se han asociado en una nueva iniciativa para establecer una colección de recursos que puedan utilizarse para apoyar el compromiso, el aprendizaje y la educación de las personas en cuestiones de sostenibilidad.

La Colección de Recursos para la Sostenibilidad (SRC) se encuentra ahora en la Biblioteca John Mackintosh Hall. Hay una serie de libros a disposición de todo el mundo para su préstamo y uso como recurso de referencia.

En un comunicado de prensa, los Servicios Culturales de Gibraltar señalaron que "algunos de los recursos son adecuados para las empresas que buscan involucrar a los empleadores en actividades de sostenibilidad, mientras que otros apoyan las oportunidades de aprendizaje informal a menudo inspiradas o apoyadas por ONG y/o grupos comunitarios".

"También habrá una serie de recursos para educadores y profesores, de modo que puedan dar vida a la sostenibilidad en el plan de estudios y en los recintos escolares. Esta iniciativa apoya a quienes pretenden implicar a otros en la transición hacia un futuro más sostenible y forma parte del compromiso de la HMGOG con un Gibraltar más ecológico. La gama y el número de recursos seguirán ampliándose y actualizándose a medida que se disponga de nuevos recursos".

GREEN HYDROGEN PIPELINE PLANNED BETWEEN FRANCE AND THE IBERIAN PENINSULA

In early December, Spain announced a new underwater pipeline that will carry green hydrogen between Barcelona and Marseille. The project is a joint venture by Spain, France and Portugal and was announced at the EU-Med 9 summit. Preliminary estimates calculate the pipeline will cost around €2.5 billion.

The pipeline was originally designed to carry natural gas from Spain to the rest of the EU to reduce dependence on Russian gas supplies and increase renewable energy capacity in Europe.

The change to green hydrogen now means that the project meets EU funding criteria, with all three nations hoping that 50% of the infrastructure costs will be funded by the EU.

Due to the project's large scale, it could take years to complete. But once finished could supply 10% of the EU’s hydrogen consumption by 2030.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas produced by renewable energy sources rather than fossil fuels. Hydrogen gas itself produces no emissions but requires substantial energy to create. If produced with renewables it is a carbon emission-free energy source.

Proyecto de gasoducto verde de hidrógeno entre Francia y la Península Ibérica

A principios de diciembre, España anunció un nuevo gasoducto submarino que transportará hidrógeno verde entre Barcelona y Marsella. El proyecto es una empresa conjunta de España, Francia y Portugal y se anunció en la cumbre UE-Med 9. Las estimaciones preliminares calculan que el gasoducto costará unos 2.500 millones de euros.

El gasoducto se diseñó originalmente para transportar gas natural desde España al resto de la UE con el fin de reducir la dependencia del suministro de gas ruso y aumentar la capacidad de energía renovable en Europa.

El cambio al hidrógeno verde significa ahora que el proyecto cumple los criterios de financiación de la UE, y las tres naciones esperan que la UE financie el 50% de los costes de la infraestructura. Debido a su gran envergadura, el proyecto podría tardar años en completarse. Pero una vez terminado podría abastecer el 10% del consumo de hidrógeno de la UE en 2030.

El hidrógeno verde es hidrógeno gaseoso producido por fuentes de energía renovables en lugar de combustibles fósiles. El hidrógeno gaseoso no produce emisiones, pero su producción requiere mucha energía. Si se produce con energías renovables es una fuente de energía libre de emisiones de carbono.

LONDON ULTRA LOW EMISSIONS ZONE TO BE EXPANDED IN 2023

By the end of August next year, the London Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) will be expanded to cover the entire London area.

From the 29th of August 2023, drivers with the most polluting vehicles will have to pay £12.50 a day to enter the Greater London Authority Boundary with their car.

The scheme was introduced in 2019 to help lower harmful air pollution in the capital. Drivers with highly polluting vehicles are charged to enter the city's north and south orbital roads. Drivers who live within the ULEZ are not exempt from the charge.

Climate and Environment groups have praised the ULEZ expansion, as well as public health groups such as Mums for Lungs, who called the plan “a win for health”.

On twitter, London Mayor Sadie Khan said “Cleaner air is coming to Outer London. Today I’m announcing that we’re expanding the #ULEZ London-wide in a move that will bring cleaner air to five million more Londoners”.

“Our city is being smothered by toxic air—and it’s hurting and killing Londoners, leading to asthma, dementia, and even cancer. Air pollution particles 15

have even been found in the livers and brains of unborn babies. We cannot stand idly by and allow this to continue”.

“Around 4,000 Londoners die prematurely each year because of long-term exposure to air pollution, with the greatest number of deaths in outer London boroughs. That’s why this expansion is so important—we need to clean the air for everyone”.

However, the decision was met with wide criticism and overwhelmingly opposed by residents and commuters. During the public consultation period, 60% of those who responded were opposed to the expansion. 70% of outer London residents and 80% of outer London workers also opposed the plans.

But with air pollution causing millions of excess deaths globally every year, and the need to drastically reduce emissions from transportation, it is expected that the drastic move will encourage more people to opt for public transport or switch to other cleaner transport methods before the ULEZ is expanded.

A finales de agosto del año que viene, la Zona de Ultra Bajas Emisiones (ULEZ) de Londres se ampliará para cubrir toda el área de Londres.

Sin embargo, la decisión recibió numerosas críticas y una abrumadora oposición de residentes y viajeros. Durante el periodo de consulta pública, el 60% de quienes respondieron se opusieron a la ampliación. El 70% de los residentes y el 80% de los trabajadores de las afueras de Londres también se opusieron a los planes.

There has been an increase in Recycling but even so our daily waste stream contains goods which are perfectly suited to be reused not been recycled ending up in the landfill polluting the environment.

Together we can turn this around by reusing, preventing pollution, reducing usage of raw materials, sustaining the environment for future generations thus preventing them from ending in landfill and sea.

Although it is not a newspaper that is solely focused on the environment, it still draws attention to the malformed anatomy of a capitalism that, in its quest for self-destruction, has no qualms about wiping off the entire planet and its biodiversity. Environmental issues are just one more example of this "monumental work," as Judith Butler has described it, which spans every aspect of what we mistakenly refer to as civilization. She blends many genres—autofiction, poetry, essay, or philosophy—in a book that demonstrates the

precipice over which the tenets, practices, and pillars of our way of life collapse. But it also emits a dim but indescribable light for a brand-new existence. There is no doubt that this is the only way to safeguard a planet.

Christmas can be a difficult time to avoid plastic, there are so many temptations and habits that we are accustomed to, but, if you’ve been conscious about your waste and your use of plastic for a while, you will have hopefully been starting to think of ways to keep waste to a minimum at Christmas time too. In case you need some last-minute inspiration, have a look at these ideas:

1. Gifts

Giving time and thought to your purchases this year can make all the difference when trying to aim for a zero waste or plastic-free Christmas. There are so many great ways you can avoid unnecessary plastic or waste when buying gifts and you can reduce your carbon footprint along the way too. For adults who like toiletries, opt for solid soaps, shampoos and even lotion bars and try to go to markets where you can buy locally-made products, you can complement these with accessories like natural loofah or wooden soap dishes. Alternatively, give an experience gift such as a spa treatment or tickets to the theatre, or even better, make a donation to charity or sponsor something/someone.

2. Wrapping

Remember the massive bin bag of wrapping paper your household can accumulate just on Christmas day? It is thought that in the UK alone the amount of wrapping paper used (and then thrown away) is enough to wrap around the equator 9 times!

Dedicar tiempo y reflexión a las compras de este año puede marcar la diferencia en cuanto al objetivo de celebrar unas navidades libres de plástico. Existen numerosas maneras de evitar el plástico innecesario, y con ello los residuos, a la hora de comprar regalos. Y de paso también reduciremos nuestra huella de carbono.

Para quienes gustan de adquirir productos de higiene personal y belleza existe la opción de los jabones, champús e incluso lociones de tipo sólido. Intenten comprar en mercados donde se puedan adquirir productos producidos localmente que pueden ser complementados con artículos como la lufa natural o jaboneras de madera. Otras alternativas pueden ser los regalos-experiencia como tratamientos de spa, entradas para el teatro o, aún mejor, las donaciones.

If, like me, you have a son who loves Lego, it can be really difficult to avoid plastic when children are young. Coupled with electronic devices and games and even many board games and craft kits coming with plastic pieces or wrapped in plastic. It seems like an impossible feat to achieve a plastic-free Christmas for little ones. However, you could aim to get a lot of gifts like these second-hand. Many items like Lego and board games can be bought on local ‘for sale’ online groups or via Ebay/Amazon’s second-hand sections and the quality is often very good. If everyone adopted this ideal, the demand -> production -> waste would all reduce. You could also consider getting wooden toys, books (second hand even better) or fabric toys well as those which use solar power or are made from recycled materials.

5. Food

This is another area where it can seem tricky to avoid plastic and waste in general. Let’s stop and have a think about the quantities we’re buying as well as the packaging our food is coming in and try

Al igual que sucede con los dispositivos electrónicos y video-juegos, muchos juegos de mesa e incluso de manualidades tienen piezas o envoltorios de plástico. Para pues una misión imposible disponer unas navidades libres de plástico para los más pequeños. Sin embargo, se puede intentar adquirir muchos de estos productos de segunda mano. Muchos productos como los Lego y juegos de mesa están en el mercado local online las secciones de segunda mano de Ebay y Amazon y suelen tener buena calidad. Si todos adoptáramos este sistema ideal, en la cadena demanda-> producción ->residuos se reduciría en todos sus elementos. También podemos plantearnos la adquisición de juguetes de madera, libros (y mejor si son de segunda mano) o juguetes de trapo así como todos aquellos que funcionen con energía solar o estén fabricados a partir de materiales reciclados.

5. Comida

Try to also get locally-grown produce and support your local organic farms where possible. If you’re buying sauces and condiments - get glass jars that can easily be reused or recycled and if you have the time to make things from scratch, you’re much more likely to reduce the packaging waste. Most of all, enjoy the time with family and friends, and be kind to the planet!

A lifetime devoted to speleology, at least since 1974, when Jorge Luis Romo joined the Marbell Speleological Section's Climbing Group. His career has been unstoppable since that time, including him in countless activities, major research, and prospecting. He even served as Cadiz's Andalusian Federation of Speleology representative and had images published in the prestigious journal Natura. He was also coordinating -among many others- the Project of Explorations and Subterranean Prospecting of the Karst of Utrera. In 1997 he became a member of the Spanish Society of Speleology and Karst Sciences (SEDECK) and since 2005 he is the coordinator and webmaster of the Digital Newspaper Cota Cero (www.cota0.com). He is a regular speaker and lecturer at important conferences and congresses on caving, and has also been awarded in important photographic competitions.

How did you become interested in Speleology?

Those veterans for different reasons emigrated to other localities, and in the end, I ended up alone alone here in La Línea; in one of my mountain outings, I coincided with some members of the Group of Speleology Niphargus, that later had to change name by coincidence with a group of Burgos and that happened to be called Group of Speleology Linense Ixodes; During that outing these companions opened the doors of their club to me and I happened to integrate, with 14 years, in the Group Ixodes. The determination in which I will pass to the Speleology was of a great companion and friend, Carlos Jesús Mateo Estébanez, guilty of "unleashing this passion" this passion for the exploration, the investigation and the communication of the Speleology.

What are the objectives of speleology?

The word itself describes them: speleology (from the Greek spelaion meaning cave and logia, treatise) is the practice of exploring and/or studying natural caves, their flora and fauna. From its Greek roots, speleology is considered a science that, based on geology, studies the development, evolution and geological formation of karst and caves. It investigates, studies, typographies and catalogs the subterranean phenomena of karst massifs; it also supports other

Toda una vida dedicada a la espeleología, nada menos que desde un lejano 1974 cuando Jorge Luis Romo accede como miembro al Grupo de Escalada de la Sección Espeleológica Marbellí. A partir de ese momento su trayectoria ha sido imparable, participando activamente en numerosas actividades, con importantes investigaciones y prospecciones. Incluso fue el representante de la Federación Andaluza de Espeleología por Cádiz e incluso publicaron fotografías en la importante revista Natura. Es el coordinador del —entre otros muchos— Proyecto de Exploraciones y Prospecciones Subterráneas del Karst de la Utrera. En 1997 ingresa como socio en la Sociedad Española de Espeleología y Ciencias del Karst (SEDECK) y desde 2005 es el coordinador y webmaster del Periódico Digital Cota Cero (www.cota0.com). Asiduo ponente y conferenciante en importantes jornadas y congresos sobre espeleología, también ha sido premiado en importantes concursos fotográficos.

¿Cómo surge tu interés por la Espeleología? A principios de 1975 comencé a realizar actividades de escalada junto a unos compañeros de colegio, en el Club Alpino Dolomítas de Marbella.      Aquellos veteranos por diferentes motivos emigraron a otras localidades, y al final me quede solo aquí en La Línea; en una de las salidas de montaña coincidí con algunos miembros del Grupo de Espeleología Niphargus, que posteriormente tuvo que cambiar de nombre por coincidencia con un grupo de Burgos y que paso a llamarse Grupo de Espeleología Linense Ixodes; durante aquella salida estos compañeros me abrieron las puertas de su club y pase a integrarme, con 14 años, en el Grupo Ixodes. El empeño en que pasará a la Espeleología fue de un gran compañero y amigo, Carlos Jesús Mateo Estébanez, culpable de “inyectarme en vena” esta pasión por la exploración, la investigación y la comunicación de la Espeleología.

¿Cuáles son los objetivos de la Espeleología? La propia palabra los describe, la espeleología (del griego spelaion que significa cueva y logía, tratado) es la práctica de explorar y/o estudiar las cavidades naturales, su flora y su fauna. A partir de sus raíces griegas, se considera a la espeleología como una ciencia que, apoyada en la geología, estudia el desarrollo, evolución y formación geológica del karst y de las cavidades. En ella se investigan, estudian,

scientific specialties such as geomorphology, hydrology, biology and archaeology. It is clear that one of the main objectives of speleology is to make known the natural, geological and patrimonial heritage of the subway world.

Do you think there is much interest in speleology in Andalusia?

Indeed, imagine that speleological activity in Andalusia dates back to the first explorations carried out by English travelers during the 17th to 19th centuries, of which there are written records of the first explorations in the Cueva del Gato; in Granada there are written records of visits to the Cueva de las Ventanas in 1811; and already in 1884 Eduardo J. Navarro, President of the Malaga Science Society, published the work carried out in the Cueva del Tesoro in Torremolinos. It was at the end of the 50's and beginning of the 60's of the 20th century, when different speleology groups began to be organized in the Andalusian region, mainly in Granada and Malaga.

At present there are speleology groups in all the Andalusian provinces, grouped in the Andalusian Federation and in the Andalusian Association of Underground Explorations, with around 1200 active speleologists.

Specifically, the different subway exploration teams have been developing research throughout all the limestone massifs of Andalusia, and especially in areas of high geological and natural value such as the Sierra de las Nieves, the Natural Park of the Sierra de Grazalema, the Karst of Yesos de Sorbas or the Sierras Subbéticas.

All these investigations and explorations have undergone great changes over the last decades, since they have been carried out in collaboration with the different Andalusian Universities, so that the speleological activity has become a necessary tool for the knowledge of the subway world of Andalusia. Tell us about the discovery of the Gran Duque Cave in the Utrera Karst.

It was at the end of 1975, we were making a visit to the Canuto de la Utrera, without the objective of looking for any cave in the area.

Esta claro que uno de los principales objetivos de la Espeleología es poder dar a conocer el patrimonio natural, geológico e histórico del mundo subterráneo. ¿Cree que en Andalucía hay mucho interés por la Espeleología?

Efectivamente, imaginad que la actividad espeleológica en Andalucía se remonta a las primeras exploraciones realizadas por los viajeros ingleses durante los siglos XVII al XIX, de las que constan escritos de las primeras exploraciones en la Cueva del Gato; en Granada se tiene constancia escrita sobre visitas a la Cueva de las Ventanas en 1811; y ya en 1884 Eduardo J. Navarro Presidente de la Sociedad Malagueña de Ciencias publica los trabajos realizados en la Cueva del Tesoro de Torremolinos. Seria a final de los años 50 y principios de los 60 del siglo XX, cuando comienzan a organizarse diferentes grupos de espeleología en la región andaluza, principalmente en Granada y Málaga.

En la actualidad  existen grupos de espeleología en todas las provincias andaluzas, agrupados en la Federación Andaluza y en la Asociación Andaluza de Exploraciones Subterráneas, rondando los 1200 espeleólogos activos federados.

Concretamente los diferentes equipos de exploración subterránea vienen desarrollando investigaciones a los largo de todos los macizos calcáreos de Andalucía, y especialmente en zonas de alto valor geológico y natural como pueden ser la Sierra de las Nieves, el Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema, el Karst de Yesos de Sorbas ó las Sierras Subbéticas.

Todas estas investigaciones y exploraciones han sufrido grandes cambios a lo largo de las últimas décadas, ya que se vienen realizando en colaboración con las diferentes Universidades Andaluzas, por lo que la actividad espeleológica se ha convertido en una herramienta necesaria para el conocimiento del mundo subterráneo de Andalucía.

Cuéntanos cómo fue el descubrimiento de la Cueva del Gran Duque, en  el Karst de la Utrera.

Fue a finales del año 1975, estábamos realizando una visita al Canuto de la Utrera, sin objetivo de buscar ninguna cueva en la zona.

in the opposite direction to ours. It was there that we found the upper mouth of the Cueva del Gran Duque; months later we would locate the lower mouth of the cave. It seemed as if he wanted to take us there.

The Eagle Owl is also called the Great Duke, for its fantastic size and for being the largest nocturnal bird of prey in the Iberian Peninsula, it was this fantastic bird that gave its name to the cave. Why is the Gran Duque Cave special?

First, because on the day of its discovery an archaeological site was found intact, later dated to the Final Neolithic period, 4000 BC. The archaeological material recovered on the surface and the subsequent study highlighted the importance of this cave as one of the most important settlements in the south of the province of Malaga, and of the human communities that inhabited the Sierra de la Utrera more than 6,000 years ago.

And secondly for its diversity of cave fauna, as it has several species of troglobitic fauna pending cataloging and study; we are currently coordinating, with the Department of Chiroptera of the Biological Station of Doñana of the CSIC, the protection, control and study of the important colony of bats in the Cueva del Gran Duque. Was La Linea de la Concepcion known to be spearheading speleology in the area?

La Línea is one of the pioneering localities in speleological activities at national and Andalusian level. At the beginning of the 70's, in the 20th century, activities were already being carried out in the caves of the Utrera Karst.

At that time, under the leadership of the late Carlos J. Mateo, explorations were already being carried out in the caves of the Utrera Karst (Casares); at the end of the 70's they were already collaborating with the GIEX Group of Jerez in the explorations and investigations in the Subterranean Complex of Cerro de las Motillas (Cortes de la Frontera) and in the chasms of La Manga de Villaluenga del Rosario.

It was 1982 when the Sierra de la Utrera Research and Exploration Project was launched, in which a large multidisciplinary team, composed of speleologists, biologists, archaeologists and geologists, is currently participating.

A media tarde apareció sobre el grupo un impresionante Búho Real (Bubo bubo), su vuelo rasante nos llevo a perseguirlo por el roquedo, hasta que desapareció tras una gran roca desde la que emprendió vuelo en dirección contraria a la nuestra. Allí fue donde nos encontramos con la boca superior de la Cueva del Gran Duque; meses más tarde localizaríamos la boca inferior de la cueva. Parecía como si hubiese querido llevarnos hasta allí.

Al Búho Real también se le llama Gran Duque, por su fantástico porte y por ser el ave rapaz nocturna más grande de la Península Ibérica, fue esta fantástica ave la que dio nombre a la cueva. ¿Porque es especial la Cueva del Gran Duque? Primero porque el día del descubrimiento se localizo intacto un yacimiento arqueológico, datado posteriormente en el Neolítico Final, 4000 a.C. El material arqueológico recuperado en superficie y el estudio posterior puso en valor la importancia de esta cavidad como uno de los asentamientos más importantes en el sur de la provincia de Málaga, y de las comunidades humanas que habitaron en la Sierra de la Utrera hace más de 6.000 años.

Y segundo por su diversidad faunística cavernícola, ya que cuenta con diversas especies de fauna troglobia pendientes de catalogación y estudio; actualmente estamos coordinando, con el Departamento de Quirópteros de la Estación Biológica de Doñana del CSIC, la protección, control y estudio de la importante colonia de murciélagos existentes en la Cueva del Gran Duque.

¿Fue La Línea de la Concepción pionera en la espeleología en la zona?

La Línea es una de las localidades pioneras en las actividades espeleológicas a nivel nacional y andaluz. A principios de la década de los 70, del siglo XX, ya se estaban realizando actividades en las cavidades del Karst de la Utrera.

En aquella época, bajo la batuta del desaparecido Carlos J. Mateo, ya se estaban realizando exploraciones en las cavidades del Karst de la Utrera (Casares); a finales de los 70 ya se estaba colaborando con el Grupo GIEX de Jerez en las exploraciones e investigaciones en el Complejo Subterráneo del Cerro de las Motillas (Cortes de la Frontera) y en las simas de la Manga de Villaluenga del Rosario.

So, the history of the Andalusian speleology is fully linked to speleologists in La Linea de la Concepcion. How do you remember the time spent in the Andalusian Caving Rescue Group? Tell us about a case.

Well, the truth is that it was a unique experience, of which I have great memories. It was around 1984, when after joining the Andalusian Federation of Speleology, I was given the opportunity to join the newly created Group of Espeleosocorro Andaluz, there I was until a few years ago in which I gave way to the young members of the rescue teams.

For several years we carried out several rescue drills in caves in various Andalusian towns, almost real drills, in which we had no knowledge of the situation until you received a call from the Guardia Civil to join the rescue teams in a cave that they indicated to us.

There are events that I will never forget, as in a drill we conducted in the Sumidero del Ramblazo, in the Subterranean Complex of Cerro de las Motillas; I was part of one of the teams distributed by the chasm, and I had to perform a counterweight in a vertical 25 meters, to remove the stretcher with the injured from that well; the problem was that the person injured was my colleague Diego Maza of Ges Ubrique .... I am of average Spanish size (1.75 and at that time something canijo) I found myself with a wounded person of 1.90 mts and more than 90 kgs of weight; that counterweight was a torture ...hahahaha.

Or when the Guardia Civil called me at home at three o'clock in the morning to tell me that... "a speleologist has given a pineapple in Piñar" (Cueva de las Ventanas in Piñar, Granada), then we met him at the end of the rescue.

These anecdotes are still palpable in the memory, although I want to eliminate from my mind those real rescues in which I had to participate, like the one of a friend and companion of the Ixodes Group in the Sima de Cacao.

How was your representation of the Andalusian Federation of Speleology for the province of Cadiz?

It was around 1983 when José María Gutiérrez Romero started the Andalusian Federation of Speleology, separating (like other regions) from the

Proyecto de Investigación y Exploración de la Sierra de la Utrera, en el que actualmente participa un amplio equipo multidisciplinar, compuesto por espeleólogos, biólogos, arqueólogos y geólogos.

Precisamente este año 2022, se cumplen 50 años de la creación del Grupo Ixodes, desde sus entrañas han surgido espeleólogos que actualmente coordinan o dirigen investigaciones y exploraciones en todo el territorio de la Comunidad Andaluza.

Por lo que la historia de la espeleología andaluza está plenamente ligada a los espeleólogos linenses.

¿Cómo recuerda el tiempo desarrollado en el Grupo de Espeleosocorro Andaluz? Cuenta algún caso.

Bueno, la verdad es que fue una experiencia inigualable, de la que guardo grandes recuerdos. Fue alrededor de 1984, cuando tras incorporarme a la Federación Andaluza de Espeleología, se me dio la posibilidad de integrarme en el recién creado Grupo de Espeleosocorro Andaluz, allí estuve hasta hace pocos años en el que deje paso a los jóvenes miembros de los equipos de rescate.

Durante varios años realizamos varios simulacros de rescate en cavidades de varias localidades andaluzas, simulacros casi reales, en los que no teníamos conocimiento de la situación hasta que recibías una llamada de la Guardia Civil para que nos uniéramos a los equipos de rescate en una cavidad que ellos nos indicaban.

Existen anécdotas que no olvidare jamás, como en un simulacro que realizamos en el Sumidero del Ramblazo, en el Complejo Subterráneo del Cerro de las Motillas; yo formaba parte de uno de los equipos distribuidos por la sima, y me toco realizar un contrapeso en una vertical de 25 metros, para sacar la camilla con el herido simulado de aquel pozo; el problema fue que el herido simulado era mi compañero Diego Maza del Ges Ubrique…. Yo que soy de talla media española (1,75 y en aquella época algo canijo) me encontré con un herido de 1,90 mts y mas de 90 kgs de peso; aquel contrapeso fue toda una tortura… jajajaja

O cuando aquel Guardia Civil que me llamo a casa a las tres de la mañana para decirme que… “un espeleólogo se ha dado una piña en Piñar “, (Cueva de las Ventanas en Piñar, Granada), luego coincidimos con él al final del rescate.

Spanish Federation of Mountaineering to which we belonged as the Southern Committee of Speleology.

As a member of the Group Ixodes of La Línea, together with another companion of the province of Cádiz, we integrated as representatives and members of the Andalusian Federation of Speleology, position that I have been maintaining until last year 2010, in which I believed opportune to give step to the new speleologists who had to take the relief to us.

It was a fantastic time in which speleology in Andalusia took shape, with the creation of various committees that allowed us to make the leap to the incipient collaboration with universities and organizations in subway research in Andalusia. At that time, what is now known as the Andalucía Explora Project was initiated, in which the speleological activities of the various Andalusian groups in the different karst areas of the region are structured. What is the greatest discovery you have made throughout your career?

I have never made discoveries alone, I have participated in the successes as a member of a research and exploration team, the discoveries are the result of teamwork, they are the result of a management plan in which each one of us has our mission. We must keep in mind that speleology is not an individual activity, speleology is a collective activity in which a team works together and in which each one has a very important role in the final result. The discovery of the Gran Duque Cave, the location of the great final galleries of the Sima Hedionda 3, the connection of the Sima Hedionda 2 and Sima Hedionda 4 (in the Sierra de la Utrera in Casares), the location of the Sima S-6 of the Neolithic Complex of La Veredilla (in Benaocaz), the valorization of the Neolithic Site of the Subterranean System of Las Hediondas (Casares), and many other research results are the result of the team of speleologists involved in subway research and exploration. You are currently vice-president of the Andalusian Association of Underground Exploration (AAES), what are its main objectives?

The AAES was born some years ago, at the beginning of 2006, as a project of integration of the Andalusian speleology groups in the different research and exploration projects, as well as its promotion and dissemination in the Community of Andalusia.

¿Cómo fue su representación por la provincia de Cádiz de la Federación Andaluza de Espeleología?

Fue alrededor de 1983 cuando de la mano de José María Gutiérrez Romero, se ponía en marcha la Federación Andaluza de Espeleología, desligándose (como otras regiones) de la Federación Española de Montañismo a la que pertenecíamos como Comité Sur de Espeleología.

Como miembro del Grupo Ixodes de La Línea, junto a otro compañero de la provincia de Cádiz, nos integramos como representantes y miembros de la Federación Andaluza de Espeleología, cargo que he venido manteniendo hasta el pasado año 2010, en la que creí oportuno dar paso a los nuevos espeleólogos que debían tomarnos el relevo.

Fue una época fantástica en la que se fue dando forma a la Espeleología en Andalucía, con la creación de diversos comités que permitieron dar el salto a la colaboración incipiente con universidades y organismos en las investigaciones subterráneas de Andalucía. En aquella época se dio inicio a lo que hoy se conoce como Proyecto Andalucía Explora, en la que se estructuran las actividades espeleológicas de los diversos grupos andaluces en las distintas zonas kársticas de la región.

¿Cuál es el mayor descubrimiento que ha realizado a lo largo de su carrera?

Yo nunca he hecho descubrimientos solo, he participado en los éxitos como integrante de un equipo de investigación y exploración, los descubrimientos son fruto de un trabajo en equipo, son resultado de un plan de gestión en la que cada uno tenemos nuestra misión. Hay que tener en cuenta que la Espeleología no es una actividad individual, la Espeleología es una actividad colectiva en la que un equipo realiza trabajos de forma conjunta y en la que cada uno tiene su importantísimo papel en el resultado final.

The purpose of the Association is the collaboration and support in the investigations and explorations that are being carried out in the great Andalusian caves, in which it is necessary to have a large team of speleologists to carry them out, in cases such as the Cabito-Republican Subterranean System, Sima GESM-Sima de la Luz, Sima Chupadora, Los tajos Coloraos, etc…

Likewise, the Association is currently undertaking different explorations and investigations in agreement with several Sevillian City Councils, such as Carmona, Alcalá de Guadaira, Alcaudete or in Torreperogil in Jaen; for the study of the Roman water mines of these localities, which have already reached more than ten kilometers of typed galleries, and where recently an impressive Roman cistern has been located. You are a member of the Spanish Society of Speleology and Karst Sciences (Sedeck), what does the society consist of?

Sedeck is a national entity that includes researchers of Karst in the Peninsula. Its aims are mainly to promote and disseminate the sciences of Speleology and Karst, to encourage scientific studies related to the conservation of caves and their natural contents, to facilitate scientific communication between people interested in the study of karst and to maintain a channel of effective dialogue with the administrations and entities dedicated to the management of this environment.

It is clear that it is an entity that I thought it was necessary to be part of, I joined it at the end of 1999. How was the creation and development of S.I.E. Caxara?

The creation of the Speleological Research Society Caxara was a need shared by a group of speleologists in the area, since our main point of research and exploration was the Sierra de la Utrera located in Casares (Malaga), although we have been expanding our field of activities to the Sierra Crestellina for many years. Without leaving aside, of course, the activities along the karstic massifs of Andalusia, both in the Natural Park of Grazalema and in the National Park of Sierra de las Nieves, and of course the explorations carried out in Cantabria and the Pyrenees. In addition, one of the main lines of work of Ges Casares is the coordination of the Project of Investigation and Exploration of the Sierra de la Utrera,

valor del Yacimiento Neolítico del Sistema Subterráneo de las Hediondas (Casares), y otros muchos resultados de investigación son fruto del equipo de espeleólogos involucrados en la investigación y exploración subterránea. Actualmente eres Vicepresidente de la Asociación Andaluza de Exploraciones Subterráneas (AAES), ¿Cuáles son sus principales objetivos?

La AAES nació hace ya algunos años, a principios de 2006, como un proyecto de integración de los grupos de espeleología andaluces en los diferentes proyectos de investigación y exploración así como su promoción y divulgación  en la Comunidad de Andalucía. El fin de la Asociación es la colaboración y apoyo en las investigaciones y exploraciones que se están realizando en las grandes cavidades andaluzas, en las que es preciso contar con un elevado equipo de espeleólogos para llevarlas a cabo, en casos como el Sistema Subterráneo de Cabito-Republicano, Sima GESM-Sima de la Luz, Sima Chupadora, Los tajos Coloraos, etc.

Así mismo actualmente la Asociación acomete diferentes exploraciones e investigaciones en convenio con diversos Ayuntamientos Sevillanos, como Carmona, Alcalá de Guadaira, Alcaudete o Torreperogil en Jaen; para el estudio de las minas de agua romanas de estas localidades, que ya han alcanzado más de diez kilómetros de galerías topografiadas, y donde últimamente se ha localizado un impresionante aljibe romano.

Eres socio de la Sociedad Española de Espeleología y Ciencias del Karst (Sedeck). ¿En qué consiste la sociedad?

La Sedeck es una entidad nacional que engloba a los investigadores del Karst de la Península. Sus fines son principalmente promover y difundir las ciencias de la Espeleología y del Karst, fomentar los estudios científicos relacionados con la conservación de las cavidades y sus contenidos naturales, facilitar la comunicación científica entre las personas interesadas en el estudio del karst y mantener un cauce de diálogo eficaz con las administraciones y entidades dedicadas a la gestión de este entorno. Esta claro que es una entidad de la que creí necesario formar parte, me incorporé a ella a finales de 1999. ¿Cómo fue la creación y desarrollo del S.I.E. Caxara?

What award would you highlight from the many received in your career?

The truth is that it is a shared pride with all colleagues who have accompanied me over the years in speleological activities, photography awards have always been accompanied by great happiness and joy as well as the International Speleo Award 2007 for one of my publications, but I keep a special memory of the recognition made by the Photographic Association of Campo de Gibraltar AFOCAM and the City Council of La Linea, for the speleological career and the defense of historical and natural heritage of the subway world and other karst areas. What are your current projects?

We continue with the systematic exploration of the cavities of the Utrera Karst within the Project of Investigation and Exploration of the Sierra de la Utrera, and for some years we have been immersed in a beginning of explorations and investigations in Sierra Crestellina, in Casares; in the same way we continue collaborating with the speleological works in the Sierra de las Nieves and the Natural Park of Grazalema.

But one of the main purposes of these activities is the dissemination of the results of these works, since what is not published is not known; in the same way it is very important, for me and for our teammates, to bring the knowledge of the speleological activity and the conservation of the Karst and its subway environment to the youngest, for that reason and thanks to the Casares Town Hall, we annually carry out various conferences and visits to caves with the schools in the area, both for students of 4th and 5th grade of primary school and students of ESO and Bachillerato; We also collaborate with the Casares Town Hall in the activities of the Cultural Week and in the different dissemination conferences that are usually organized.

We are currently holding a dissemination conference called "Sierra de la Utrera, 200 million years of history", with which we intend to bring the general public closer to the importance of this place in

La creación de la Sociedad de Investigaciones Espeleológicas Caxara era una necesidad compartida por un grupo de espeleólogos de la zona, ya que nuestro principal punto de investigación y exploración era la Sierra de la Utrera situada en Casares (Málaga), aunque ya hace muchos años que estábamos ampliando nuestro campo de actividades a la Sierra Crestellina. Sin dejar de lado, por supuesto, las actividades a lo largo de los macizos kársticos de Andalucía, tanto en el Parque Natural de Grazalema como en el Parque Nacional de la Sierra de las Nieves, y por supuesto las exploraciones realizadas en Cantabria y Pirineos.

Además una de las líneas principales de trabajo del Ges Casares es la coordinación del Proyecto de Investigación y Exploración de la Sierra de la Utrera, y por tanto la coordinación de la Actividad Arqueológica del Sistema Subterráneo de las Hediondas;  y de igual manera llevar a cabo las actividades divulgativas en colaboración con el Ilmo. Ayuntamiento de Casares.

¿Qué premio destacaría de los muchos recibidos en su trayectoria?

La verdad es que es un orgullo compartido con todos los compañeros que me han ido acompañando a lo largo de estos años en las actividades espeleológicas, los premios de fotografía siempre han ido acompañados de una gran felicidad y alegría así como el Premio Internacional Espeleo 2007 por una de mis publicaciones, pero guardo un especial recuerdo del reconocimiento realizado por la Asociación Fotográfica del Campo de Gibraltar AFOCAM y el Ayuntamiento de La Línea, por la trayectoria espeleológica y la defensa del patrimonio histórico y natural del mundo subterráneo y otras zonas kársticas. ¿Cuáles son vuestros proyectos actualmente?

Continuamos con la exploración sistemática de las cavidades del Karst de la Utrera dentro del Proyecto de Investigación y Exploración de la Sierra de la Utrera, y desde hace algunos años estamos inmersos en un inicio de exploraciones e investigaciones en Sierra Crestellina, en Casares;  de igual manera seguimos colaborando con los trabajos espeleológicos en la Sierra de las Nieves y Parque Natural de Grazalema.

Pero uno de los de los principales fines de estas actividades es la divulgación de los resultados de esos trabajos, ya que lo que no se publica no se co-

Finally, what advice would you give to citizens interested in becoming involved in the field of speleology?

It is clear that speleology is a risky activity, so it is impossible to develop it alone; it is always best to approach one of the clubs in the area and join their activities, and take some of the introductory and initiation speleological courses.

This does not mean that you cannot collaborate or participate in some of the activities organized, in particular by our association; there are hundreds of caves where you can enjoy the subway world with the minimum equipment, and with the only requirement of doing it accompanied. Besides, it is the best way to enjoy speleology, participating as part of a working team.

OTWO Magazine seems excellent to me, in addition to the quality of the magazine, top of the line, both the content and the photographic material are fantastic.

noce; de igual manera es muy importante, para mí y para nuestros compañeros de equipo, llevar el conocimiento de la actividad espeleológica y la conservación del Karst y su medio subterráneo a los más jóvenes, por eso y gracias al Ayuntamiento de Casares, anualmente llevamos a cabo diversas conferencias y visitas a cavidades con los colegios de la zona, tanto para alumnos de 4º y 5º de primaria como alumnos de la ESO y Bachillerato; además de la colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Casares en las actividades de la Semana Cultural y en las diferentes jornadas de divulgación que suelen ponerse en marcha.

Actualmente mantenemos una conferencia de divulgación denominada “Sierra de la Utrera, 200 millones de años de Historia”, con la que pretendemos acercar al público en general la importancia de éste paraje casareño y los valores naturales, geológicos y patrimoniales que alberga; y que ya ha estado en varias localidades de la comunidad andaluza.

Finalmente. ¿Qué consejo daría a los ciudadanos interesados en dedicarse al campo de la Espeleología?

Esta claro que la actividad espeleológica es una actividad de riesgo, por eso es imposible desarrollarla en solitario; lo mejor siempre es acercarse a uno de los clubes de la zona e incorporarse a sus actividades, y realizar algunos de los cursos de introducción e iniciación espeleológica.

Eso no quiere decir que no se pueda colaborar o participar en algunas de las actividades organizadas, en concreto por nuestra asociación; existen cientos de cavidades en las que puede uno disfrutar del mundo subterráneo con el mínimo equipo, y con el único requisito de hacerlo acompañado. Además es como mejor se disfruta de la Espeleología, participando como parte de un equipo de trabajo.

Verona

La experiencia italiana. Capítulo uno: Verona

Verona, a city in northern Italy, on the river Adige, at the foot of the Lessini Mountains, 63 miles west of Venice, was our first planned stop, of what I have now come to call ‘The Italian Experience’. The idea was to hire a car, and self-drive around certain known, as well as other not so well-known regions of Italy. We had initially formulated a set route, well researched and planned.

My wife and I arrived in Italy by air from Malaga. The passage through Malpensa Airport, serving Milan, and the largest international airport in northern Italy, was quick and straightforward. However, picking up our hire vehicle was altogether another matter. The service was slow and tedious, taking a considerable amount of time to complete. By the time our vehicle was brought round, and the signing of the contract was complete, I felt relieved that the long process was over, very enthusiastic about the prospect of our journey finally beginning. First stop Verona. A magnificent instance of a developing settlement that has enjoyed uninterrupted progress over a 2,000-year period. The last two millennia have seen advancements incorporating artistic elements of the highest quality from each succeeding period. We placed our luggage in the boot of the car —a Renault Captur Expression— and took the E62 and A8 from Malpensa, followed by the E64 through Monza to Bergamo. From here, we hooked onto the A4, before finally taking the E70 to Verona via Brescia, a city and commune in the region of Lombardy, Northern Italy, very near to the southern shores of Lake Garda. The distanced covered was 200 kilometres which took about two and a half hours to complete, including one stop for coffee.

As we sped down the motorway towards Verona, I felt a youthful spirit, akin to an intoxicating dream, that left indelible impressions of antiquity on me — impressions of works of art and monuments. A monument, production of a people, can serve to exemplify what is typical about them. It can manifest the essence of a culture in a convenient miniature. Monuments materialize the race, the culture, the way of living, the rationality, and expectations of the people within their territory.

Monuments, works of art, natural wonders, or weird customs, are more than simply yet another element to be catalogued. They exist and invite dis-

La idea era alquilar un coche y conducir por algunas regiones conocidas y otras no tan conocidas de Italia. Inicialmente habíamos formulado una ruta fija, bien investigada y planificada. Mi mujer y yo llegamos a Italia en avión desde Málaga. El paso por el aeropuerto de Malpensa, que sirve a Milán y es el mayor aeropuerto internacional del norte de Italia, fue rápido y sencillo. Sin embargo, recoger nuestro vehículo de alquiler fue harina de otro costal. El servicio fue lento y tedioso, y tardó bastante tiempo en completarse. Cuando nos trajeron el vehículo y se firmó el contrato, me sentí aliviado de que el largo proceso hubiera terminado, y muy entusiasmado ante la perspectiva de que por fin empezara nuestro viaje. Primera parada: Verona. Un magnífico ejemplo de asentamiento en desarrollo que ha disfrutado de un progreso ininterrumpido durante un periodo de 2.000 años. En los dos últimos milenios se han producido avances que han incorporado elementos artísticos de la más alta calidad de cada periodo sucesivo.

Colocamos nuestro equipaje en el maletero del coche —un Renault Captur Expression— y tomamos la E62 y la A8 desde Malpensa, seguidas de la E64 por Monza hasta Bérgamo. Desde aquí, enlazamos con la A4, antes de tomar finalmente la E70 hasta Verona pasando por Brescia, ciudad y municipio de la región de Lombardía, en el norte de Italia, muy cerca de la orilla sur del lago de Garda. La distancia recorrida fue de 200 kilómetros que tardamos en completar unas dos horas y media, incluida una parada para tomar un café.

Mientras bajábamos a toda velocidad por la autopista hacia Verona, sentí un espíritu juvenil, parecido a un sueño embriagador, que dejó en mí impresiones imborrables de antigüedad: impresiones de obras de arte y monumentos. Un monumento, producción de un pueblo, puede servir para ejemplificar lo que tiene de típico. Puede manifestar la esencia de una cultura en una conveniente miniatura. Los monumentos materializan la raza, la cultura, el modo de vida, la racionalidad y las expectativas del pueblo dentro de su territorio.

covery and experience, simply because they add historical context and political dimension. In his seminal paper written in 1994, entitled From the Pyramids to Pausanias and Piglet, John Richard, "Jas" Elsner, (born 19 December 1962), a British Art historian and classicist, Humfry Payne Senior Research Fellow in Classical Archaeology and Art at the University of Oxford, said:

“… [A monument] encapsulates identity by embodying the past as it exists in the present; they focus in terms of the past the present's sense of being what it is.”

If you are familiar with history and classical antiquity, you will understand the paradisiacal enchantment I referred to above. We always return with our thoughts to that dreamlike, idyllic Italia Antica, that preserves as magical treasure in our memory. Collections of beautiful sensations that overwhelm our psyche with examples of higher, purer, and more spiritually lived lives.

The origins of the name Verona are unknown. Thought, derived from Vera, perhaps an Etruscan person's name, or of Gallic origin. It could also have been taken from the name of a Roman family or from the Latin ver, meaning spring. According to myth, the legendary founder of the city, the Gallic chieftain Brenno, called the place Vae Roma, which translates to "Accursed Rome". Subsequently, over the centuries, Vae Roma became Verona.

This city does not disappoint in terms of touristic sites and monuments it has to offer. However, before exploring the city, we checked in to the NH Collection Palazzo Verona Hotel. The 5* NH Collection Palazzo Verona hotel is a warm welcoming refuge, close to the cultural highlights of historic Verona. Right in the city centre, the hotel is within walking distance of the most interesting shopping areas of the city.

This ancient commune boasts very well preserved, rich Roman remains. Best known is the great Arena or amphitheatre; built c. 100 AD. Typical of Roman amphitheatres, the famous gladiator fights were held here, as too were the venationes, a type of public spectacle that featured fierce exotic animal hunts. Los monumentos, las obras de arte, las maravillas naturales o las costumbres extrañas, son algo más que otro elemento a catalogar. Existen e invitan a ser descubiertos y experimentados, simplemente porque añaden un contexto histórico y una dimensión política. En su artículo seminal escrito en 1994, titulado De las pirámides a Pausanias y Piglet, John Richard, «Jas» Elsner, (nacido el 19 de diciembre de 1962), historiador del Arte y clasicista británico, Humfry Payne Senior Research Fellow en Arqueología Clásica y Arte en la Universidad de Oxford, dijo:

Siempre regresamos con el pensamiento a esa Italia Antica, onírica, idílica, que conserva como mágico tesoro en nuestra memoria. Colecciones de bellas sensaciones que abruman nuestra psique con ejemplos de vidas más elevadas, más puras y más espiritualmente vividas. Los orígenes del nombre Verona son desconocidos. Se cree que deriva de Vera, tal vez un nombre de persona etrusco, o de origen galo. También podría haber sido tomado del nombre de una familia romana o del latín ver, que significa manantial. Según el mito, el legendario fundador de la ciudad, el caudillo galo Brenno, llamó al lugar Vae Roma, que se traduce como «Roma maldita». Posteriormente, con el paso de los siglos, Vae Roma se convirtió en Verona.

Esta ciudad no defrauda en cuanto a lugares turísticos y monumentos que ofrece. Sin embargo, antes de explorar la ciudad, nos registramos en el hotel NH Collection Palazzo Verona. El hotel de 5* NH Collection Palazzo Verona es un refugio cálido y acogedor, cerca de los lugares de interés cultural de la Verona histórica. En pleno centro de la ciudad, el hotel se encuentra a poca distancia de las zonas comerciales más interesantes de la ciudad.

Este antiguo municipio cuenta con ricos restos romanos muy bien conservados. El más conocido es la gran Arena o anfiteatro, construido hacia el año 100 d.C.. Típico de los anfiteatros romanos, aquí se

strophic damage caused by the terrible earthquake that struck the city in the 12th century. The violent tremor left indelible traces on the original monument. Only four arches are left of the outer circle, which was the initial beautiful façade.

The amphitheatre's vocation for shows and public functions has never been exhausted over the centuries. At the time of the Communes, and under the Scaligeri, trials were held, with judicial disputes being resolved by hand-to-hand fights. Jousts and tournaments were held in the Middle Ages, and up to the 18th century. Still today the Arena is the famous setting for Verona's spectacular opera season.

Other Roman survivals include several triumphal arches and the Roman theatre. On the banks of the Adige, as it winds its way through the beautiful city, is the cathedral which is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. San Zeno Maggiore, farther to the west and near the ramparts, is the finest —according to some— Romanesque church in Italy. Built almost entirely between 1117 and 1225, with a detached brick campanile which dates from 1045-1075, and a notable façade with scriptures, marble lions, and one of the earliest great circular windows.

Among the secular buildings is the 14th century Scaligeri palace, as well as the Palazzo Canossa by Michael Sanmicheli, a Venetian architect and urban planner of the Mannerist-style, among the greatest of his era. The magnificent Palazzo Canossa influenced the work of Andrea Palladio, an Italian Renaissance architect active in the Venetian Republic. Palladio, widely considered to be one of the most influential individuals in the history of architecture, was himself Influenced by Roman and Greek construction, primarily Vitruvius a Roman architect, and engineer during the 1st century BCE.

Verona is a splendid, ancient corner of the Veneto region, nestling between the river Adige and Lake Garda, intimately linked to their waters. The Adige today flows between strong embankments, built after the 1882 flood. Its geographical location has made it strategically important since Roman times when it was a bastion against the Gauls. Later it was the capital of the Theodoric’s semi barbarian government in the 6th century AD, and then a stronghold of the Lombards. Bitter opposition to the Germanic rule in the Middle Ages encouraged the citizens to

En la Edad Media y hasta el siglo XVIII se celebraron justas y torneos. Aún hoy, la Arena es el famoso escenario de la espectacular temporada de ópera de Verona.

Otras supervivencias romanas son varios arcos de triunfo y el teatro romano. A orillas del Adigio, que serpentea por la bella ciudad, se encuentra la catedral, que es una mezcla de estilos románico y gótico. San Zeno Maggiore, más al oeste y cerca de las murallas, es la mejor —según algunos— iglesia románica de Italia. Construida casi en su totalidad entre 1117 y 1225, con un campanario independiente de ladrillo que data de 1045-1075, y una notable fachada con escrituras, leones de mármol y una de las primeras grandes ventanas circulares. By its old walls and tower survivors, the Verona of the great Della Scala family —that ruled Verona during the 13th and the 14th centuries— becomes accessible. Based in the old city, the della Scala family gave asylum to the exiled Dante Alighieri. Correspondingly, the Divine Comedy poet dedicated unforgettable verses to the illustrious family and the city.

The most famous and visited tourist site in Verona is "Casa di Giulietta" or Juliet's House, located on Via Cappello. Juliet is the female protagonist in William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet, first published in 1597. Set in Verona, the story tells of a tragic series of misunderstandings, caused by ongoing quarrels between the Montagues, and Capulets, two very influential families operating in the city at the time.

Why did Shakespeare choose Verona as backdrop location for his famous play? A possible answer may be elicited by considering the bard’s influences, references, and sources. These draw heavily from a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. One of the earliest references to the names Montague and Capulet comes from Dante's Divina Comedia (Divine Comedy). Here Dante refers to the Montecchi (Montagues) and the Cappelletti (Capulets) in canto six of Purgatorio. History records the name of the Montague family as instigators of powerful political party in Verona, but that of the Capulets as from a Cremonese family, both of whom play out their conflict in Lombardy, rather than exclusively within the confines of Verona itself. Dante’s influence, coupled with the situation of the Montague family living in Verona, and feuding with the Capulets, could help formulate a suggestion as to why Shakespeare decided the City of Verona would be the setting to his romantic tragedy.

Having attempted to answer the question of why Shakespeare chose Verona, another interesting question arises. How did a 13th-century house in Via Cappello become linked with Romeo and Juliet? The trace is in the name. The original owners of the house were the Dal Capello family, commonly known as the Cappelletti. Conscious imagination

Una de las primeras referencias a los nombres Montesco y Capuleto procede de la Divina Comedia de Dante. Aquí Dante se refiere a los Montecchi (Montescos) y a los Cappelletti (Capuletos) en el canto sexto del Purgatorio. La historia registra el nombre de los Montesco como instigadores de un poderoso partido político en Verona, pero el de los Capuleto como de una familia cremonense, y ambos desarrollan su conflicto en Lombardía, y no exclusivamente dentro de los confines de la propia Verona. then played its part, forging an association with the Cappelletti and the Capulets, Juliet's family name. Cappelletti and Capulets can be clearly seen to have correspondences regarding spelling and phonetics —they are made up of a similar configuration of letters and sound alike.

The house became Juliet’s family home, giving a great boost to Verona's tourist industry. The link to the Via Cappello property was further reinforced by a handy small balcony conveniently situated overlooking the courtyard. Disappointing as it sounds, the Juliet balcony wasn't added until well into the 20th-century. Just below the imposter balcony, stands a bronze statue of Juliet. Legend has it, that rubbing your hand over Juliet's right breast, brings love and fertility.

For I will raise her statue in pure gold.

That while Verona by that name is known.

There shall no figure at such rate be set

As that of true and faithful Juliet.

The romantic tale of Romeo and Juliet has become so intertwined with Verona, that many seeking love, make special pilgrimages to Juliet's house from all over the world.

From Juliet’s house we walked to the Castelvecchio (the Old Castle), a mere ten-minute walk. The castle museum holds an exciting art collection, highly acclaimed in Italy and Europe. Built by the Della Scala family—ruling dynasty of Verona— in the Middle Ages c. 1355. It was both a defensive fortification and a home, successively adjusted by future invaders such as the Venetians, the French, and the Austrians.

Following radical refurbishment work, since 1928, the castle has housed the museum of Veronese art and sculpture, up from the Middle Ages. During World War II, the structure was damaged as it witnessed the melodramatic Verona trial, were Giovanni Marinelli; Carlo Pareschi; Luciano Gottardi; Galeazzo Ciano, the former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mussolini's son-in-law; the honoured Marshal of Italy Emilio De Bono; and Tullio Cianetti, the traitors of the regime, stood trial and were condemned to death.

Verona is an exciting place, typical of Italian cities of old. Unfortunately, as usual, time was against us. We had allocated a single day and night in Verona. Reluctantly we had to choose from a long list of interesting historical sites the city offers. Further to Juliet’s house and Castelvecchio, we decided to explore the famous Porta dei Borsari. An ancient Roman gate built in the first century AD, during the imperial age, Porta or gate Dei Borsari constitutes the western façade, built in the first years of the principality of Claudius. On the Via Postumia, the gate was Verona’s main entrance in antiquity. Only the front of the ancient gate is visible today. Its grand decorative was added during the Imperial Roman era, bearing engravings dedicated to the emperor Galienus 260 to 268 CE. Galienus ruled during the 3rd century crisis that nearly caused the collapse of the Roman empire. For visitors with more time on their hands, Verona has several other interesting sites open to the public. These include the Duomo of the Verona Cathedral, and the Arco dei Gavi or Gavi Arch. A must is Verona’s main square, the Piazza Bra, often shortened to Bra, is one of the largest piazzas not only in Italy but in Europe. Palazzo Barbieri, on the eastern side of the Piazza, built in the 19th century by architect Giuseppe Barbieri, also deserves mention.

Moving aside from monuments and history for now, another Italian treasure that cannot escape mention is food. It is difficult for anyone visiting Italy not to partake of its traditional culinary magnificence. There is good food everywhere —Verona is no exception. After dark we wandered through the cobbled streets of the city centre, full of lively restaurant and cafe terraces. The old city is overlooked by well-preserved tenements sporting classical venetian windows and traditional green louvre shutter blinds. We sat in one of these café terraces at Piazza Bra for a pre-dinner glass of wine, after which we made our way to ristorante Lupo di Mare, where we had a reservation.

Typical Verona, Ristorante Lupo di Mare offers rich traditional food and the freshest fish. Situated within the suggestive setting of Piazza Sant'Anastasia, the establishment locale itself is located exactly where Dante had his residence in Verona. Lupo di Mare’s speciality is fresh grilled octopus from Venice. Without hesitation we ordered two servings of

Even though Verona is not large, it nevertheless offers a great deal to the avid and interested visitor. Considered a second-rate city— by 19th century travel writers and newspaper correspondents— compared to Rome, Milan, Venice, and other important Italian cities, Verona always proved otherwise.

A visit is highly recommended. Verona is a quaint, well-preserved, ancient city, with great history and food, hosted by a hospitable, warm, serving people. However, alluring as Verona had been, unfortunately with no more real time to spare, it was all sights on our next destination. The morning of the next day hailed great magnificence; we were going to Venice. To Venice for the first time —to one of Italy’s greatest, most famous, and splendorous cities.

Aunque Verona no es grande, ofrece mucho al visitante ávido e interesado. Considerada una ciudad de segunda categoría —por los escritores de viajes y corresponsales de prensa del siglo XIX— en comparación con Roma, Milán, Venecia y otras importantes ciudades italianas, Verona siempre ha demostrado lo contrario. Su visita es muy recomendable. Verona es una ciudad antigua, pintoresca y bien conservada, con una gran historia y gastronomía, acogida por una gente hospitalaria, cálida y servicial.

Sin embargo, por muy atractiva que fuera Verona, desgraciadamente no disponíamos de más tiempo real, así que todas las miradas estaban puestas en nuestro siguiente destino. The oldest maps of the Strait

Claudius Ptolemy is the one person from antiquity who has had the most impact on the present and future of a scientific field. I must admit that I'm in awe when I consider the accuracy of maps with an almost two-thousand-year history and, more importantly, the use of geometric projections to depict a spherical universe on a two-dimensional piece of paper. Even while calculations done in antique Greece proved the shape and size of the Earth with genuinely amazing accuracy, it appears that the most obtuse terraplanism is making a comeback.

Ptolemy was a Greek scientist born in Egypt, in the period after the conquest of the Nile delta and surroundings by the Roman Empire. He saw the light at the end of the first century A.D. and it is believed that he died in Alexandria in the year 170 of our era. It was precisely in Alexandria and its mythical library where he developed his work in the fields of Geography, Cartography, Mathematics, Astronomy, Optics and Chemistry. There he had the opportunity to consult earlier geographers, such as Marinus of Tyre, who is known to have contributed, along with other authors, to the Ptolemaic masterpiece, his Geogra-

Cuando veo la precisión de unos mapas con casi dos mil años de historia y, sobre todo, el uso de proyecciones geométricas para representar un mundo esférico en una pieza de papel de dos dimensiones, reconozco que no salgo de mi asombro. Máxime cuando parece que existe un cierto resurgir del terraplanismo más obtuso, a pesar de que cálculos realizados en la Grecia clásica establecieron la forma y el tamaño de la Tierra con una exactitud realmente pasmosa. The first in the first century B.C. at the hands of Caesar; the second at the end of the fourth century A.D. by the Christian hordes, encouraged by Theophilus, who considered that it stored pagan knowledge - the story of which was filmed by Amenábar in his movie Agora - and, finally, the last burning attributed to the Arab conquerors of the seventh century, for similar reasons.

What is certain is that many of its books have been able to reach the present day thanks to copyists and translators. In general, it was Islam that preserved and developed classical Greco-Latin knowledge, thus fostering a previous Renaissance in Al Andalus and the Middle East, when Europe was plunged into the most absolute darkness of reason. In fact, some of Ptolemy's works were only preserved in Arabic until they were transcribed by different schools of European translators and amanuensis.

Apart from Astronomy and Mathematics, what interests us about Ptolemy is the Geographia, a great work that describes the known world, the ecumene, of the time in which he lived. Just looking at the Ptolemaic world map, we can understand the important role that the Strait of Gibraltar played in the imaginary of Greeks and Romans and where the idea of Finis Terrae or Non (Terrae) Plus Ultra that prevailed until the time of the great "discoveries" was born. By the way, it is often said that what encouraged Christopher Columbus to go to the Indies were the calculations of Ptolemy's maps, where it seemed that Asia was much closer than the distance that actually separates it from the Iberian Peninsula.

The end of the eastern world was much less known by the Greeks and Romans than the western one, hence the inaccuracy of the map in that area, with practically straight coasts. On the contrary, they did transit the western end frequently. So, it is not surprising that the Strait of Hercules, the Fretum Herculeum, was the place where many of the legends of classical Greece or Rome took place, where mythological and fantastic beings and the most horrifying and powerful creatures of the known world lived.

Geographia consists of 8 books and an atlas with double-page maps (in the manuscript works that

En general fue el islam quien preservó y desarrolló el saber grecolatino clásico, propiciando así un previo Renacimiento en Al Andalus y el Medio Oriente, cuando Europa estaba sumida en la más absoluta oscuridad de la razón. De hecho, algunas de las obras de Ptolomeo sólo se conservaron en árabe hasta que fueron transcritas por diferentes escuelas de traductores y amanuenses europeos. Al margen de la Astronomía y la Matemática, lo que nos interesa de Ptolomeo es la Geographia, una gran obra que describe el mundo conocido, la ecúmene, de la época en la que vivió. Sólo viendo el mapamundi ptolemaico, se comprende el importante papel que el Estrecho de Gibraltar jugaba en el imaginario de griegos y romanos y de dónde nace la idea del Finis Terrae o del Non (Terrae) Plus Ultra que imperó hasta la época de los grandes “descubrimientos”. Por cierto, suele decirse que lo que animó a Cristóbal Colón a ir a las Indias fueron los cálculos de los mapas de Ptolomeo, donde parecía que Asia quedaba mucho más cerca de la distancia que realmente la separa de la Península Ibérica.

El fin del mundo oriental era mucho menos conocido por los griegos y los romanos que el occidental, de ahí la imprecisión del mapa en esa área, prácticamente con costas prácticamente rectas. Por el contrario, sí que transitaban frecuentemente el extremo occidental. Así que no sorprende que el Estrecho de Hércules, el Fretum Herculeum, fuese el lugar donde transcurriesen muchas de las leyendas de la Grecia o la Roma clásica, donde habitaban seres mitológicos, fantásticos y las criaturas más horripilantes y poderosas del orbe conocido.

Geographia se compone de 8 libros y un atlas con mapas a doble página (en las obras manuscritas que

have come down to us, in the original one papyrus rolls were used) in which thousands of geolocated points are located through the first known coordinate system, based on a grid of meridians and parallels, which provide the latitude and longitude of each place. Even today, the prescriptions for drawing maps used by Ptolemy are still canonically used. In addition to those already cited, there are the north orientation of maps, the use of a projection system - conic in his case - to bring a spherical world to a representation on a plane.

The first book is devoted to the theoretical foundations of map making. The following six are devoted to the description of the known world through eight thousand places of which there are references, obtained mostly thanks to the collaboration of explorers, travelers, military men, merchants, through their own observation and, of course, from the bibliography of other previous Greek geographers and cartographers, whose works would be treasured in the libraries (there were two of them) of Alexandria. The last volume, the first atlas of the world, contains 27 maps: a world map and 26 other regional charts: 10 of Europe, 4 of Africa and 12 of Asia.

The map of the Iberian Peninsula corresponds to number two -the Tabula Secunda in some Latin versions-, behind that of the British Isles, since the atlas is ordered from north to south and from west to east, from top to bottom and from left to right. It is undoubtedly the earliest known map of our region. The chart of North Africa, which corresponds to the northern shore of the Strait, is exactly the same; it is by far the first map drawn of the Tingitan peninsula and ends, precisely to the north at the African column of Hercules, an obligatory geographical reference in any map of the Strait of Gibraltar dating back to Antiquity.

Unlike the first volume, which remained more or less unchanged in successive copies for hundreds of years, the maps that accompany the different preserved versions of Ptolemy's Geographia (more than 50) are not all exactly the same. Although they have a logical common substratum, in each version the cartography was updated according to the geographical knowledge of the time. The illustrator's hand also gave each work its own personality, especially if the maps had or had not been "illuminated" and turned

El mapa de la Península Ibérica se corresponde con el número dos —la Tabula Secunda en algunas versiones latinas—, detrás del de las islas británicas, ya que el atlas se ordena de norte a sur y de oeste a este, de arriba a abajo y de izquierda a derecha. Sin duda, se trata del primer mapa conocido de nuestra región. Con la carta del norte de África, que se corresponde con la orilla norte del Estrecho, sucede exactamente lo mismo; es con diferencia, el primer mapa trazado de la península tingitana y acaba, precisamente al norte en la columna africana de Hércules, una referencia geográfica obligada en cualquier mapa del Estrecho que se preciase de la Antigüedad.

Al contrario que el primer tomo, que se mantuvo más o menos inalterado en las copias sucesivas durante centenares de años, los mapas que acompañan a las diferentes versiones conservadas de la Geographia de Ptolomeo (más de 50) no son todos exactamente iguales. Aunque tienen un lógico sustrato común, en cada versión se actualizaba la cartografía en función de los conocimientos geográ-

The different maps that we have been able to consult of the area of the Strait are all very similar and, as it could not be otherwise, they hide curiosities and some unsolved mystery. The first thing that catches our attention is that, just after crossing it and going out to the Outer Sea, to the Oceanus Hyperboreus, a large island appears. At first sight, Plato's words come to mind (written in the Critias and the Timaeus), which described Atlantis as an island located at the very mouth of the Strait. In the case of a Greek map, such a thing would be possible, but it is absolutely improbable; on the one hand, because the size that the philosopher attributed to Atlantis was larger than that of Africa (Libya) and Asia combined and, on the other hand and more definitive, because the island after the Strait is perfectly located by the annotation of its corresponding place name and refers unequivocally to Gadeira, the current Cadiz, where the temple of Juno is located, which also appears referenced in the cartography.

Apart from the fact that most of these maps also place Tartessos geographically, which opens the way to an incredible adventure, we will stop to analyze the representation of Gibraltar in these books copied between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Of its location there is no doubt, despite the imprecision of the coastline in that area, thanks to the Greek name that appears on the promontory: Mount Kalpe. But that is not the strange thing. The maps use a few symbols to indicate the cities marked and their importance, they are so obvious and intuitive that they do not need an explanatory legend. However, on Gibraltar, in several of the versions appears a unique image that is not repeated anywhere else in the known world: a figure of a god with something like a solar disk on his head and carrying a kind of staff. It could be thought that perhaps it was a representation of Hercules (Herakles), although his image was usually accompanied by a short, thick mace and not a long scepter. Perhaps that is why other authors have speculated with the possibility that it was another different god of the Greek pantheon.

Be that as it may, that the maps of classical antiquity highlight Gibraltar as the only place in the

A primera vista se nos pueden venir a la mente aquellas palabras de Platón (escritas en el Critias y el Timeo), que describían la Atlántida como una isla localizada en la misma boca del Estrecho. Tratándose de un mapa griego, tal cosa sería posible, pero es absolutamente improbable; por un lado, porque el tamaño que el filósofo le atribuía a la Atlántida era mayor que el de África (Libia) y Asia juntas y, por otro y más definitivo, porque la isla tras el Estrecho está perfectamente localizada mediante la anotación de su topónimo correspondiente y se refiere inequívocamente a Gadeira, a la actual Cádiz, donde se encuentra el templo de Juno, que también aparece referenciado en la cartografía. Al margen de que la mayoría de esos mapas también sitúan geográficamente a Tartessos, lo que abre paso a una increíble aventura, nos detendremos en analizar la representación de Gibraltar en esos libros copiados entre los siglos XIII y XIV. De su ubicación no cabe ninguna duda, a pesar de la imprecisión de la línea de costa en esa zona, gracias al nombre en griego que aparece sobre el promontorio: Monte Kalpe. Pero eso no es lo extraño. Los mapas usan unos pocos símbolos para indicar las ciudades señaladas y su importancia, son tan obvios e intuitivos que no necesitan de una leyenda explicativa. Sin embargo, sobre Gibraltar, en varias de las versiones aparece una imagen exclusiva que no se repite en ningún otro lugar del mundo conocido: una figura de un dios con algo parecido a un disco solar sobre la cabeza y portando una especie de báculo. Podría pensarse que quizá fuese una representación de Hércules (Herakles), aunque su imagen se solía acompañar de una maza corta y gruesa y no de un largo cetro.

Tree planting. The right way to save ourselves? Part 1

When it comes to combatting climate change, there are a number of different strategies that can be employed. One popular approach - tree planting - and while often lauded as an effective way to combat climate change, there is some debate as to their effectiveness. On the one hand, trees absorb carbon dioxide, which is a major greenhouse gas. They also help to cool the air by releasing water vapour into the atmosphere.

On the other hand, tree-planting programs can be expensive and difficult to implement on a large scale. In addition, critics cite the use of non-native tree species which can wreak havoc on local ecosystems.

Rather than look at a study of the month, I wanted to bring attention to a News Feature published by a fellow scientific author. It highlights the story of Tony Rinaudo who tried planting trees for years to no avail until it struck him that rather than introducing species, he should simply nurture the nature already around him.

In the ’80s, this was a novel approach in Niger and birthed the practice of farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR). A follow-up study in 2004 showed that these farmers grew trees across five million hectares – without planting one.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of tree planting programs in combatting climate change will depend on several factors, including cost, feasibility, and timing. Perhaps Rinaudo’s approach is something every program manager looks towards for inspiration.

Cuando se trata de combatir el cambio climático, hay diferentes estrategias que pueden emplearse. Una de ellas es la plantación de árboles, y aunque a menudo se alaba como una forma eficaz de combatir el cambio climático, hay cierto debate sobre su eficacia. Por un lado, los árboles absorben el dióxido de carbono, que es uno de los principales gases de efecto invernadero. También ayudan a enfriar el aire al liberar vapor de agua en la atmósfera.

Chinese Sacred Lily Narcissus tazetta

Most of us are familiar with the Paperwhite Narcissus Narcissus papyraceus, a small white daffodil that is so typically associated with Christmas in Gibraltar. This is just one of many species of small daffodil, most of which are yellow. It is the species that you are most likely to see on the Rock, but a close relative also grows in parts of Gibraltar and it too is mainly white. The Chinese Sacred Lily is extremely similar to the Paperwhite Narcissus, but it differs from its relative in having a yellow centre to its flower. It is rare in Gibraltar but grows in a wild state in areas of the Isthmus such as North Front Cemetery, as well as in and around the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. These are both sites with sandy substrate, which the species favours. However, it is absent from the neigbouring region and was possibly introduced to Gibraltar. Indeed, it is a common garden plant. Its common name of Chinese Sacred Lily is actually incorrect: the species is native to the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia. Indeed, the Narcissus or daffodils are mainly European and Mediterranean in distribution, with its centre of diversity being the Iberian Peninsula.

La mayoría de nosotros conocemos el narciso blanco Narcissus papyraceus, un pequeño narciso blanco tan típicamente asociado a la Navidad en Gibraltar. Ésta es sólo una de las muchas especies de narcisos pequeños, la mayoría de los cuales son amarillos. Es la especie que es más probable que veas en el Peñón, pero un pariente cercano también crece en partes de Gibraltar y también es principalmente blanco. El Lirio Sagrado Chino es muy parecido al Narciso Blanco, pero se diferencia de su pariente en que su flor tiene un centro amarillo. Es poco frecuente en Gibraltar, pero crece en estado silvestre en zonas del Istmo como el cementerio de North Front, así como en los Jardines Botánicos de Gibraltar y sus alrededores. Ambos son lugares con sustrato arenoso, que la especie favorece. Sin embargo, está ausente en la región vecina y posiblemente fue introducida en Gibraltar. De hecho, es una planta de jardín común. Su nombre común de lirio sagrado chino es en realidad incorrecto: la especie es originaria de la región mediterránea y del suroeste de Asia. De hecho, los Narcisos o narcisos son de distribución principalmente europea y mediterránea, siendo su centro de diversidad la Península Ibérica.

It is an outcome instrument, which it enables the identification of needs, measuring and summarising changes, assessment where we are now and where we are going, empowerment and choice. It supports recovery and social inclusion.

It’s based in a Star designed of ten areas:

- Managing Mental Health.

- Physical Health.

- Living Skills.

- Friends & Community.

- Use of time.

- Relationships.

- Addictive Behaviour.

- Home.

- Identity and Health Esteem.

- Trust & Hope.

Member along with the person/s who is supporting them complete the star will go through the different areas and determine together where they are on the Journey of Change according to their own circumstances.

The Journey of Change has five stages and then steps:

- Stuck (1-2).

- Accepting help (3-4).

- Believing and trying (5-6).

- Learning (7-8).

- Self-reliance (9-10)).

Then we’ll focus the areas the person wants to improve during the next months and set a plan to reach the persons goals.

After three months, another Recovery Star will be scheduled to review progress and keep working either in the same area if they are not where they want to be on the Journey of Change or move on to another area.

This is one of the services that Clubhouse Gibraltar offers to members and now, a New Year is getting closer, we use this tool to achieve our dreams and set up new goals for ourselves.

ADVENTURE IN THE SERRANÍA DE RONDA CANYONING IN "ARROYO MAJALES"

In the middle of the Serranía de Ronda is the village of Júzcar, very famous for the movie "The Smurfs". In this village we can find two very different canyons.

Canyoning is the descent of a river, usually in its upper section, where due to erosion models the river with very different shapes where we will have to improvise handrails, jumps or rappels.

This canyon is considered Level 1 for its duration, but it is a totally initiation activity because all its difficulties are optional and we can always use an alternative way to overcome it.

For the adventure we will have all the necessary technical material: 3 or 5 mm wetsuits depending on the temperature, harness, helmet, and collective technical material for the descent.

The Ravine

The Arroyo Majales is located at the exit of Júzcar in the direction of Faraján, less than a kilometer away there is a small viewpoint where we leave the car. From there we go up the ravine on the left bank until we reach the first jump.

It is a beautiful ravine, especially when it carries water. The ravine consists of five rappels between 8 and 15 meters and several jumps, slides and skills that make this ravine is very sporty.

The progression along the riverbed is very comfortable, since the ground is very little slippery due to the presence of calcium carbonate concretions. The descent maintains a gentle slope, interrupted by numerous shallow pools and clear water.

We finish the last rappel that ends practically on the road.

Duration Canyoning: 4 hours.

AVENTURA EN LA SERRANÍA DE RONDA BARRANQUISMO EN «ARROYO MAJALES»

En plena Serranía de Ronda se encuentra el pueblo de Júzcar, muy famoso por la película de “Los Pitufos”. En este pueblo podemos encontrarnos dos barrancos muy diferentes entre sí.

El barranquismo consiste en el descenso de un río, normalmente en su tramo alto, donde debido a la erosión modela el río con formas muy diversas donde tendremos que improvisar pasamanos, saltos o ráppeles.

Este barranco está considerado de Nivel 1 por su duración, pero es una actividad totalmente de iniciación ya que todas sus dificultades son opcionales y siempre podremos usar un camino alternativo para sortearla.

Para la aventura se dipondrá de todo el material técnico necesario: neoprenos 3 o 5 mm según la temperatura, arnés, casco, y material técnico colectivo para el descenso.

El Barranco.

El Arroyo Majales se encuentra a la salida de Júzcar en dirección a Faraján a menos de un kilómetro hay un pequeño mirador donde dejaremos el coche. Desde ahí remontamos el barranco por su margen izquierdo hasta llegar al primer salto.

Es un barranco precioso, sobre todo cuando lleva agua. El Barranco consta de cinco rappeles entre 8 y 15 metros y varios saltos, toboganes y destrepes que hacen que este barranco sea muy deportivo.

La progresión por el cauce es muy cómoda, ya que el suelo es muy poco resbaladizo por la presencia de concreciones de carbonato cálcico. El descenso mantiene una pendiente suave, que interrumpen numerosas pozas de poca profundidad y agua transparente.

Terminamos el último ráppel que acaba prácticamente en la carretera.

Duración:

Barranquismo: 4 horas.

Mínimo/Máximo de participantes: 6/12 participantes.

Forest Bath in Pinar del Rey

In the Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the Pinar del Rey is located between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera, in Cadiz.

Its origin dates back to 1800, this place was chosen to plant pine trees (Pinus Pinea) brought from Vejer de la Frontera, and thus obtain wood for the construction of ships.

It currently consists of a recreational area with a picnic area and barbecues, the Alhaja stream, the Nature Classroom and a botanical garden. In addition, there are two trails: El Cerro del Águila and Tajo del Pajarraco.

A peculiar place, with a mild climate, and a migratory bird route. Its environmental conditions make it a paradise for flora. We can even see some plants that only occur in northern Spain and the Canary Islands. We will walk through a mixed forest, with cork oaks, gall oaks, poplars, alders and ash trees, with a wide variety of botanical species, some of them endangered. In addition, of course we will discover its rich and varied fauna.

In addition, the Pinar del Rey, was part of a sandy seabed settlement, so we can easily find shells and marine pieces.

To begin the activity we will leave the car at the end of the parking lot of the recreational area of Pinar del Rey (San Roque), it is important to bring water, sunscreen, (optional mat for floor and camera).

Duration: 2 to 3 hours.

En el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, se ubica el Pinar del Rey entre los términos municipales de San Roque y Castellar de la Frontera, en Cádiz.

Su origen se remonta a 1800, este lugar fue elegido para plantar ejemplares de pinos piñoneros (Pinus Pinea) traídos desde Vejer de la Frontera, y obtener así madera para la construcción de navíos.

Actualmente consta de un área recreativa con una zona de picnic y barbacoas, el arroyo de Alhaja, el Aula de Naturaleza y un jardín botánico. Además, existen dos senderos: El Cerro del Águila y el Tajo del Pajarraco.

Un lugar peculiar, de clima suave, y paso de ruta de aves migratorias. Sus condiciones ambientales lo convierten en un paraíso para la flora. Incluso podemos ver algunas plantas que únicamente se dan en el norte de España y en las Islas Canarias. Recorreremos un bosque mixto, con alcornoques, quejigos, álamos, alisos y fresnos, con una extensa variedad de especies botánicas, algunas de ellas amenazadas. Y por supuesto descubriremos su rica y variada fauna.

Además, el Pinar del Rey, formó parte de un asentamiento arenoso de fondos marinos, con lo cual podremos encontrar fácilmente conchas y piezas marinas.

Para comenzar la actividad dejaremos el coche al final del aparcamiento de la zona recreativa del Pinar del Rey (San Roque), es importante llevar agua, protección solar, (opcional esterilla para suelo y cámara de fotos).

The treatment, cure, and care provided to deal with some evil or disease was known to the Greeks as therapeia. Our word “treatment” is derived from this. It is normal for someone to wonder how they will administer the forest to them if we add it. Will it be in pills, syrups, or serum? It doesn’t harm, so don’t worry. Even with all the humor, individuals who read us need to understand that we lead the individual to a total immersion in Nature, in some type of natural habitat, preferably woods.

Using the forest as therapy means that we will use the benefits provided by Nature as a way to intervene in people’s health. Not only in their physical health, but also in their mental and social health; even, for those who so wish, in their spiritual health.

Each of these people has a specific need, or a specific health problem, or a personal difficulty. Taking into account these personal needs, we will try to find the most concise way to repair it, doing it in a structured way.

The approach of the Forest Baths is always therapeutic. The professionals who are dedicated to the Forest Baths are trained to be able to collaborate with guarantees with health professionals, making available to the general public, to the Institutions, all the set of interventions that we have.

What are we talking about then? We are talking about promoting healthy lifestyles, those that improve our quality of life. We are talking about relieving the day-to-day stress in which we live. We are also talking about preventing or dealing with burnout, that which is caused by work and production. Finally, we talk about more specific interventions on the health of any person, always under supervision.

Los griegos llamaban therapeia al remedio, al tratamiento, a los cuidados para hacer frente a algún mal, a alguna enfermedad. De ahí viene nuestra palabra terapia. Si le añadimos lo del bosque es normal que alguien pueda pensar, ¿cómo me van a dar el bosque?, ¿en pastillas, jarabes, lo tendrán en suero? No se preocupen, no duele. Bromas aparte, lo que tienen que saber los que nos lean es que llevamos a la persona a realizar una inmersión completa, mente y cuerpo, en la Naturaleza, en algún tipo de entorno natural, especialmente los bosques.

Usar el bosque como terapia significa que utilizaremos los beneficios que procuran la Naturaleza, como una forma de intervenir en la salud de las personas. No solo en su salud física, también en la mental y en la social; incluso, para los que así lo deseen, en la salud espiritual. Cada una de esas personas tiene una necesidad específica, o un problema de salud concreto, o alguna dificultad personal. Teniendo en cuenta estas necesidades personales trataremos de buscar la forma más concisa de repararlo, haciéndolo de manera estructurada.

El enfoque de los Baños de Bosque es siempre terapéutico. Los profesionales que nos dedicamos a los Baños de Bosque estamos formados para poder colaborar con garantías con los profesionales de salud, poniendo a disposición del público en general, de las Instituciones, todo el conjunto de intervenciones que tenemos.

¿De qué estamos hablando entonces? Hablamos de promover estilos de vida saludables, de eso que mejoran nuestra calidad de vida. Hablamos de aliviar el estrés del día a día en el que vivimos. Hablamos también de prevenir o hacer frente al burnout, ése que nos provoca el trabajo y la producción. Hablamos, por último, de intervenciones más específicas sobre la salud de cualquier persona siempre bajo supervisión.
