Hello Members,

The construction of the Marina is all around us now, with breakwater construction programmed to finish this year and commencement of the land reclamation phase. DevelopmentWA’s predicted relocation for the Club remains 4Q 2023, and the Management Committee and staff will continue to work to secure a successful transition when it happens.

Our Opening Day on October 9th was a great success, with nothing but compliments from our guest and attendees. Many thanks for the huge effort by our staff and volunteers in organising and executing. We had a large turnout of members on the day, with the bouncy castle, popcorn and sausage sizzle a big hit with the kids, young and old.

The large number of small children who accompany their parents to the Club have become a fixture at the Club scene, and as the summer months are upon us, we can anticipate that number to increase. We welcome the little ones to enjoy what the club has to offer, like the playground and grassy areas, but there are rules and guidelines to ensure their safety, and the enjoyment of others:

• Children are not allowed in the bar or the dining room unless accompanied by an adult.

• The bar and dining room are for dining, drinking and socializing; playtime activities need to be outside.

• For their safety, children need to remain within the boundary fences. Aside from the snake habitats, the rocky cliffs are a danger to young climbers, and below are not patrolled.

We are aware of the challenge of keeping shoes on children, but it is for their protection.

• For those that want to have a kick, please use the grassy area on the south side of the club. Footy and soccer balls flying into outdoor diners is not good.

A record number of members have renewed their subscriptions, and combination of the Marina Development and a welcoming Club environment has brought a big demand for new memberships. This puts even more pressure on our limited facilities, and our capability to expand is constrained. The challenge has been to manage the growing demand for service without compromising the quality of the member experience. A growing issue is providing service to both members and their non-member guests, particularly during peak times. Our members have a right to enjoy the Club, and to share their Club with a restricted number of guests. We have initiated new Point of Sale (POS) system and a schedule of member checks to ensure that club patrons are financial members, or at the very least a member-registered guest. We ask that members comply with registering their guests, that you show patience and understanding as staff they manage the crowded venue and long lines.

Your Club is a place to share with friends and family, whether it’s engaging in your favourite ocean sport, or just watching the sun set into the Indian Ocean. Please be assured that the Committee and staff are committed to maintaining a safe and enjoyable Club for all, and we thank you for your encouragement and support.

Best regards,

Ken Wood

From the General Manager

Hello members,

The club is filling up fast again with the beautiful weather and the influx of new members. We are all enjoying the new faces at the club. Fridays and Sundays are reaching a point of maximum capacity for the Galley to keep up with the demand. Please be patient whilst we aim to serve everyone.

Galley Announcement

To keep our members better served, we will now be making bookings essential on Friday nights. You can book between 6:00 and 7:45. Please book on the website under the “EAT” tab and click reservations. First in best dressed. Members ONLY can book on the website.

Opening of the Season

What a magnificent day. The weather was perfect, almost too perfect with very little wind for the sailors to get the yachts going for the sail past. Even better than the weather was the people we got to enjoy the company of. The new committee members all dressed up in whites, the Mayor Albert Jacob once again did a great talk and showed his commitment and support for the club. He did nearly open the season himself and was quickly shut down by Ken Wood that was timely and hilarious for everyone to see.

Bali By The Sea 3.0

Back by popular demand this one will be huge. We are always looking to make events better. Another sell-out event so we can’t wait to see you all down here in your best dressed Bali gear.

Kids Christmas Party

Thanks to Kevin in advance for being Santa once again. He has been preparing his beard for months and is really looking the part. Thanks also to Ian Younghusband for providing his famous little red MG.

New Years Eve

Party time – the galley will not be open but we will have some food options available for everyone.

Digital Cards

Thanks for everyone being so patient. Most members are enjoying the upgrade, a few of you had some technical issues. With any major IT upgrade there will be teething challenges. We are nearly complete, and the upgrade will make life easier for everyone, the members and the staff.

Special thanks to all the staff also for being resilient and patient. Most of them want to strangle me but hopefully will be thanking me very soon as working life will be more automated and efficient.

Playground

Delivery delays are holding up the install date. It will be installed around mid-November.

Clubs WA Awards

I’m sure most you know but it does mean a lot to the club to be awarded these special awards.

The staff work extremely hard and I want to thank them for helping to make these awards possible.

Marina Development

It feels like we are being taken over by transformers getting closer and closer to us with excavators, bulldozers and trucks. It certainly is an impressive site to see the speed at which they are changing the landscape. Please be careful on the road and walking around as the animals (snakes) get stirred up. This will become the “new norm” for the next 2-3 years whilst we wait for our new clubhouse to be built.

Regards,

Fenn McDonnell General Manager

Meet the Committee

At ORSSC, we value our club members and strive to ensure they feel welcome and included as an integral part of the clubs' operations and celebrations.

Tide seeks to select and feature one member of our club in every issue, highlighting aspects of their personality and their contribution to the club so you can get to know them and maybe even say hello next time you see them.

The questions we ask share insight into each members personal tastes and lifestyle away from their club duties.

Graham joined the club in 2012 and became an active member of the Dive Section immediately. He then became Rear Commodore of Dive in 2015 for 2 seasons then moved up to Vice Commodore in 2017 and has served under 4 Commodores in his time on Committee.

Graham also offers his services as a PADI MSDT where to date he has certified 33 members into the PADI system to enjoy the Underwater World, and is looking forward to assisting the club transitioning to their new facility.

Boat Fishing Season Summary

3rd September Boat Fishing Comp

Saturdays forecast was looking promising with hardly any swell, light easterlies in the morning, turning south west at lunchtime. The weatherman almost got it spot on, it was a great day to be on the water with 28 fishers signing on for the last competition for our regular season. Early morning tactics included hitting the inshore reefs on the light gear for a tommy ruff and the elusive storm gardie. While some took early advantage of the east wind to target the demersals straight off the bat. My boat had a little anchor trouble on the day, it decided the conditions where that good it would stay on the bottom for the weekend!

The weigh in was one of our biggest for the season with almost everyone weighing in a species of some sort. Plenty of sambos getting put across the scales and even better seeing the catch/ release photo’s being utilized - good work. Regular beach fisho Kiwi got among the boat action with a nice harlequin for his troubles - obviously had sympathy for his awesome bucket hat and committed suicide on the hook. Belinda Mallon had a good day for ladies bagging the biggest pink snapper for the competition - good work showing up the boys. Chris Dixon had a good bag of fish including 1.15kg flat head and a good trevally at 1.23kg.

We took a little longer organising the winners/ species prizes than normal due to the number of

entries. By the time the sums had been done and all boxes ticked, I looked up to an empty stadium. Everyone had left, all but 8 people! They had gone home to watch Collingwood bump the Fremantle Dockers out of finals run. Fremantle Dockers supporters should know better to get there hopes up. Much better option to stay at the club to drown your miseries.

Enter the results, we had no juniors enter for the day. Veterans was a vicious contest between two brothers, Terry/Gary and old mother hubbardGraham Coles. Colesy had a typical tradesman start at 10.30am and was all done by 11.30am. Graham came in third with a haul of 5.66kg, 4 species, 3 heaviest and 69.3 points. In second Gary had the most weight at 17.36KG, 7 species, 3 heaviest, 112 points and a good sized local dhu fish. Terry as we know holds no remorse for his mere mortals and pipped brother Gary 15.014kg, 7 species, 5 heaviest and 130 points. Terry had a donkey sambo at 19.9kg that would have stretched the arms, well done on the win. Was good to see the ladies in action at the weigh in. Mother Maree coming in third with 0.163kg, 1 specie, 1 heaviest and 16.3 points and I don’t think she provided any burley on this particular trip. Samatha Broadhurst in second spot 10.697kg, 2 species and 41.4 points. Sam hooked into a sambo also that helped contribute to a good bag weight. The ladies winner for the last comp of our season was Belinda Mallon with a great bag 14.562kg,4 species, 4 heaviest and 93.1 points. Congratulations Belinda and hopefully you can bring this into the new season. The mens comp proved to be a close one between the top 5 bags with numerous lads weighing in 6 plus species. Red Ferguson finally put his words into action coming in third position and smashing his skipper Buckets with 11.914kg, 8 species,1 heaviest and 109.8points. In second position and part time fisherman Andy Cass 19.880kg, 6 species, 2 heaviest and 111.8 points. Andy also got onto a nice dhu fish and biggest weighed in for the comp 11.76kg, good fish out of ocean reef. In first position Rob Chucky Walters, always has

The next boat comp is on 5th November, 1-day competition located in Perth. This 1 comp is during the demersal ban also, so keep an eye on your bag limits etc. The start time is now 5am with the weigh-in still at 4pm. I will keep all updated leading into it. I hope all can and did get a dhu bash in prior to the demersal ban.

Boat Fishing Season Summary

25th & 26th September Boat Fishing Comp

Our Annual 2-day boat comp in Jurien Bay was held over the AFL grand final long weekend. This comp is always a good one to get stuck into as it’s our first one for the new season and normally has a better chance of getting a good fish over the two days. We had 7 boats head up for the comp which was a good response as the forecasted weather was not looking great. The majority of boats landed in J-bay on the Friday with a couple of keener fishos heading up a day prior to getting a fish in.

The Saturday ended up being a Strong Wind Warning and we could not fish- it was very ordinary conditions and a decent swell to top it off. Still, a good day to crack a can, light a fire and watch the Cats demolish the Swannies. Sunday proved to be a better day and all boats got out among it. Swell was up a bit and the fish were definitely on the chew. So where are the sharks, pretty much every boat got sharked. Chuckie Walters even had his Amberjack mauled - Buggers!

Weigh in back at Terrys ranch is always easy, snaggers on the bbq, sun shining and cold bevies. Gemma Bayens was the only female to fish and had a decent bag of 10.43kg, 4 species, 4 heaviest and 84.9 points taking out the ladies. A good way to start the season off Gem. Worth noting she also had caught her brand new boat first sized dhu fish and has fair bragging rights over partner Matty Naylor - icing on the cake.

The only Veteran to enter was Terry Bell. He had a cracker bag of 35kg, 7 species, 7 heaviest and 182.1 points! His bag had a very good sized 8 bar cod, decent sambo, and what ended up being the biggest dhu fish for the comp at 15.2kg, absolute honky.

The mens were hotly contested with 1 point separating 2nd and 3rd. Troy Clugston 26.37kg, 5 species, 3 heaviest and 120.7 points. Pipped Francis McKeown 20.78kg, 6 species, 3 heaviest and 119.6 points. Both lads had decent dhu fish each. Frangas one going 10 and a bit kg whilst T-Roys went 13.3kg. Good work lads.

In first place was Buckets with 33kg, 8 species, 3 heaviest and 165.2 points. Had a donkey boat mulloway of 14.4kg and also landed a yellow tail king fish of 6kg while chasing a tailor using Troy Clugstons rod.

Thanks to everyone who turned up and helped out. Thanks again Terry for using your house and fire pit. A quick mention of Francis and Red Furgason. The few sherbets around the camp fire, now have a little wager on who will beat each other this year! I will keep you all posted.

Beach Fishing Season Summary

September Beach Fishing Comp

This was the last beach comp of the year and luckily we had a gap of nice weather between a horrible wet and windy winter that doesn't seem to want to go away. We had 16 anglers weigh in including 3 mini juniors, 2 vets, 3 ladies and 8 men. In the mini juniors Crew bell again showed us his skills not only winning but bagging 4 species. Amongst the 4 were a herring, wrasse, a 486g Sweep as well as a 465g Skippy! Great work! Ashton Marsden came second with 2 species including a chunky Tailor of 456g. In third place was Coby McDarby with a Tailor of 392g. Very good bags from the next-gen fishers!

In the Vets, Clive Powell narrowly beat Graeme Cole both having 4 species. Clive ended up winning 63-56 points with 3 heaviest compared to the 2. In the ladies, all 3 had some reasonable bags. Maree Yovich scored 29 points with a Tailor & a Wrasse whilst Lisa Lebeter had a herring, Tarwhine and a Wrasse with a total of 51 points. Carolyn Benniman had the best bag with 5 species, 2 heaviest and a total score of 67 points. Carolyn's species included a Flathead, Herring, Pike, Tailor & Tarwhine.

In the mens Vince secured third place with 70 points and 5 species including an impressive 684g Skippy. Second place went to Ricko with 76 points, 6 species and 2.24kg of weight. Ricko got a nice flatty of 541g one of many he caught over the weekend. John Lebeter won the mens again with 125 points. 7 species and 7.7kg of weight made up his bag. John got 2 fish that are worth a mention,

Highlights

With our 2022/23 season kicking off this month and some great weather, I had high expectations of a good amount of quality bags getting weighed in. I was NOT disappointed! Lots of large Tailor were weighed in, with Tyla getting the heaviest at a little over 3kg. Connor Elliman & Crew bell also caught cracker Tailor (Connor's 2.67kg & Crew's 1.2kg). Mark Purchas got a nice Pinky, with a little trick he learnt from Seamus at Getaway Outdoors Balcatta. He mentioned to me at the weigh in "I owe that bloke a beer!” Kiwi & Tyla also had Pinkies in their esky's slightly smaller than Marks. Sue Freeman had a stonker sand whiting at 222g which turned some heads!

With the new species added to the list, some butterfish, trumpeter and even a small guitarfish/ shovel nose Ray were weighed in.

The fish of the weekend though was undoubtedly Mick Locks 1.844kg Flathead, the thing was a dinosaur! This is gonna have to be put forward to the record books and see if it's a new club record for the beach. This wasn’t Locky’s only surprisehis esky revealed a 13.5kg Mulloway- his PB!

Heaviest Species Winners & Sponsors

Unfortunately, the fish was caught on Friday so was ineligible to be entered into the comp- an epic catch nether the less! Add in the lucky competitor prize and that makes a fantastic weekend for Locky!

In total we had 21 bags weighed in which was fantastic to see! Hopefully we see similar numbers at the next comp.

After a few weeks break in between the end of our Winter sailing season and the opening of the new season, it’s good to be back on the water.

Firstly, I just wanted to extend my thanks to Terry O’Grady, our previous Rear Commodore, for his effort and contributions over this last year. I’d also like to thank the Committee for standing again this year. Their experience and guidance has already helped me with the transition into my new role and I look forward to the year ahead.

The Winter season ended a few weeks ago, with a close and exciting competition for top spot throughout the season, with Quicksilver ultimately taking out first place. We faced some bad weather this season, with a handful of races having to be cancelled due to the winds. Our final race saw our sailors tackle 22 knot winds with gusts of up to 32 knots.

The new season kicked off with the Open Day and Rear Commodore’s Cup. 10 boats joined in for the sail past through the marina, competing to win Best Dressed Boat, with Feelin Free winning the prize with not only the best dressed boat, but best dressed crew too. The sail past proceeded the Rear Commodore’s Cup race. The day showed gentle winds and sunny weather – a nice change to the weather we saw during the Winter season, with Venomous claiming top spot and taking home the cup.

Starting this season, we have shifted our usual approach to our sailing year from 2 seasons to 3 seasons, with A Spring, Summer and Winter series consisting of 7 races each. The difference in pace for the seasons will bring an exciting change and promote some healthy competition between sailors, as well as a new trophy now up for grabs.

The North Coast series is due to start soon, with the first race of the series starting on the 14th November. After some discussions with Hillarys, we’ve agreed on some small changes to the previous years to make the series better than ever. I’m looking forward to the races ahead and to continue to strengthen our relationship with the Hillarys sailing section.

We are also expanding the social side of the sailing section, with more social events being planned up the upcoming year. A mid-week social sail will commence on a weekly basis and there are also plans for a Rotto trip in January and a trip to Fremantle later next year.

Looking forward to seeing you out on the water next week to start our Spring season.

Regards,

Andy Hodkinson

The Power Boat Report

Season Summary

I am pleased to submit my first report to the Tide Magazine as the newly appointed Rear Commodore for the Power Boat Section.

Firstly, I would like to give a big thank you to our outgoing Rear Commodore Steve Hayward who did a great job of heading up the section over the last two years. His comprehensive handover has enabled a seamless transition for our members.

The winter months have been a little quiet for the power boat section for on water activities as is to be expected. Despite this we have seen some very well attended club events including section dine ins in the Galley with our last event attracting almost 40 members.

The section has been looking to attract new members to our events and we are pleased that several new families are joining us on a regular basis.

General Business

Over recent months our committee members have been undertaking membership checks at the club during the traditionally busy times. This has been a great opportunity for the committee to engage with our existing members. These checks have also offered the committee a chance to meet with guests who are being signed in and to highlight the benefits of being a member of our club.

ANY IMPORTANT INFORMATION?

Next Powerboat Dine in 18th of December, all current members and members interested in joining the section welcome.

Highlights

The highlight of activities in recent months was the club opening of the season day on October 9th, this event is one of the most anticipated events of the year with an opportunity to meet many invited guests from our sister clubs from around Perth. The weather was perfect and I the day was enjoyed by all.

Upcoming Events

The section has a full upcoming calendar of events that we are looking forward to and these include:

A half day river cruise in late October with members launching from Maylands boat ramp heading up the beautiful meandering Swan River to Mandoon Estate in Caversham for lunch. This is an annual event on the sections calendar and is a great introduction to boating for novice boating members due to the ease of launching and the calm waters of the upper Swan River.

24

The next planned event is in November for a coastal cruise with members launching from either Ocean Reef Marina or Hillary’s Boat Harbour. Due to the unpredictable Perth offshore weather this cruise will either have us staying close to home or heading further afield to Fremantle or maybe even out to Carnac Island for Lunch and a swim.

Our final event for the year will be the Xmas lights cruise around the Mandurah canals to see the extraordinary display put on by residents of the canals. The weekend event includes the section members taking time for some extra on water activities in and around the Peel region.

Regards,

Stephen Lazenby

Season Summary

Raft up

The Sunday prior to the public holiday for the Queens passing, Rick, Trish and myself decided that the weather for the public holiday was worth doing a raft up.

The notice was put out to the Dive and Powerboat sections, as it was leading into a long weekend and school holidays there were no takers.

Thursday morning, I launched the boat early at Ocean Reef Marina as it had not been in the water for a while.

With Graham Hindley on board went up to Mindarie for an early coffee to pick up Keryn and Rob Adams and return to Ocean Reef, not long after this Rick Green showed up and we tied up together. After all the hard work was done setting the boats up, Helen and Gaynor decided to paddle out and join us. We then settled in for a couple of drinks and BBQ lunch and a lot comments from passing boats that it smelled good.

Busselton weekend away

About mid-afternoon, the wind picked up and managed to pull the anchor, so it was decided to head home. Great company with awesome food.

Pithara Farm camp 26.08.22 – 28.08.22

I arranged a weekend away to a working grain farm in Pithara 2.5 hours north east of Perth with people who showed an interest.

A what’s app group was set up for those that had decided to take the trip, and a location shared through a pin drop. That was my contribution to organisation, or so I thought.

Dave Baronet

We all left at different times on Friday after work, the idea follow the pin what could possibly go wrong.

As I got close to the farm I noticed having been to the farm before, that I was being directed to an incorrect location.

Realizing this was a problem for the others I rang Daz to let him know, luckily Daz and Peter had caught each other up and Peter had just turned off on the wrong road.

Some frantic phone calls and radio communication and we had everyone back on track.

Technology, what could possibly go wrong.

After catching up with the owner of the farm we were guided to a spot called the high country which would be our camp. Spectacular views over the in flower canola fields.

While setting up various sleeping arrangements a good size fire was built with the help of the trusty Husqvarna battery chainsaw.

Set in for a very cold night and a few beers and campfire stories.

Saturday was damp with some small showers, but with the fire relit and breakfast on the go the spirits were high.

Someone mentioned that the only place in Australia starting with X is Xantippe, not sure this is true.

We decided to visit water tank at Xantippe, built nearly 100 years ago at the base of a granite rock catchment area to service the local farming towns.

More technology failures in navigation led to a curiously long route to the tank, and a nick name being earnt for the weekend “U turn Dave”.

Back at camp the fire was stoked up, the VIP’s went to the farm for showers.

Obviously some people had to stay tend the fire and drink beer, and wine.

A slightly warmer night around the fire Saturday night with an attempt at some camp fire games to keep us entertained. Enjoyed by all.

Sunday a good breakfast and packing up.

We swung past the farm to thank our hosts and hope to be invited again.

Many thanks to Ben for letting us stay on his property and to Dave for his great organisationexcept navigation.

Busy Bee

Club grounds blitz prior to the ‘Open Day’ to Celebrate the beginning of the 2022 season.

A huge shout out of gratitude to all the volunteers who responded and assisted with the blitz on Saturday morning Oct 1st!!!

Divers, Power Boaters, Social and RSL attendees came to the assistance. Brush cutters and brooms, power washers and scrapers were whizzing about the place with great jovial banter and comradeship. The lawns were manicured with loving care, ugly fence weeds slashed to oblivion.

Thanks to the Cross-Sectional bunch, it was all taken care of with the team fed and on their way home by midday.

Open Day

With fantastic weather, guests and comrades gathered to welcome and open the season on this 49th year of the club.

The new management team were introduced and our very own Hon. Secretary Sheila Hearson, Hon. Treasurer Geoff Tavener, Rear Commodore Sailing - Andrew Hodkinson, Angling - Francis Mckeown, Powerboating - Stephen Lazenby, Diving - Laurie Campbell and Social - Joanne Harfield were formally appointed.

With 7 new management members taking on the arduous tasks of steering the club for the next 12 months leading up to the 50th year celebrations, continuing the journey down road of engagement with the developers towards the new club and all that encompasses. We are extremely lucky to have such a show of strengths in the team at this very exciting and challenging time for the SSC.

Club Events Report

Season Summary

Whilst we have had a few quiet months, we hope you have all been enjoying yourselves at the club.

Our Gin and Jazz night was very well attended, bringing in over 100 members.

The Spirit of little Things were kind enough to host our Gin tasting; along with this went a sumptuous grazing table, chocolate and cheese fountains and roaming canapes for everyone to enjoy. I think it’s safe to say everyone went home with a full tummy!

Opening of the season was a huge success, attended by dignitaries from other clubs along with representation from the City of Joondalup.

Past and present committee were also in attendance, welcoming officially our new committee members. The weather was perfect for a Sail Past and the Commodores Cup.

After all the official proceedings the members started to flow in for an afternoon of entertainment which included a sausage sizzle, live music, face painting and our new addition of the Lady Bee Ice-cream van.

Welcoming the warmer weather

We are kicking off with one of our most popular events Bali By the sea 3.0, this event is always our most popular and has sold out again. Once again we are working very closely with the Bali Dewata Community to bring you everything you like and more, with the day centered around bringing our 2 communities together and celebrating the Balinese culture and way of life. The day will start from 12pm and will feature an array of Balinese Cuisine and loads of cocktails and bintangs to satisfy the taste buds. For entertainment, we will have 2 amazing DJs - DJ Karl to kick the day off, and DJ Selina to get the party pumping once the sun sets. DJ Selina has played & entertained all over the globe from the Playboy Mansion in LA to Australia & around Europe at the hottest day beach clubs. Throughout her career Selina has supported some of the biggest acts in music today including: Snoop Dog, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Veronicas, Havana Brown, Luciana, NENA, Cash Cash, Ice House only to name a few. We will also have special performances, bouncy castles for the kids and traditional Balinese market stalls and a special sunset surprise.

Moving into December, our annual Christmas Buffet is scheduled for the 16th December where Chef Paula will be cooking all of your favourite traditional Christmas dishes. Santa will also be coming to visit the club on the 18th December for the Kids Christmas Party - more details will follow for these events in the coming month.

Highlights

The Social Section is aiming to run around 4 events per year. Our first event with huge benefits to members is the ‘Swan Valley Tour’ on Saturday, 26 November which we are very excited about, this should be a great day out in the sunshine enjoying local beers and wines at some beautiful venues in the Swan Valley and then heading back to the Club to enjoy a drink at sunset.

Past Events

One of the highlights over the last few months was the Clubs Opening Day which was held on Sunday, 9 October which included invited guests from Local Government, representatives from other Sailing and Yacht Clubs, as well as Life members. This was a great opportunity to meet some key people involved in the Club as well as enjoy the festivities of the day.
