FEAT. REPORTS FOR Angling, Sailing, Power Boating, Diving, Marina Committee and Darts ISSUE JUL-SEP 2024
Graham Hindley
Hi Members,
Winter has hit hard with rain, wind, and a severe drop in temperature, but there's still a warm reception at the club. We have many events coming up for you to enjoy. For example, Sunday Roasts have been reintroduced for the Winter Season. Additionally, we have numerous weekend evening functions, such as Band Evenings, Bogan Bingo, the Commodore's Ball, and the popular Monthly Quiz. These are just a few of the offerings this winter.
The past few months have seen some fantastic events at the club. Easter Sunday was a great success with a fantastic turnout, and our Annual Easter Egg Hunt delighted our littlest members. A big thank you to Maree, Lou, and Tracey for running the event and helping the younger kids find eggs. It was a wonderful day for all.
Our Aussie Rock Night had members on their feet, singing great Aussie classics when Filthy Habits took the stage in April. We have more great band nights planned and can't wait to promote them!
ANZAC Day was extra special this year as it will be the final one at our iconic location and memorial. Hundreds attended the moving memorial service conducted by the Joondalup City Sub RSL branch. After the service, the club helped the RSL celebrate ANZAC Day with high spirits, live music from Afterglow, Two-Up, sausage sizzles, and fun for all.
In the coming months, we have a great schedule of events for our members, starting with the Commodore's Ball, Bogan Bingo, a fundraiser, the Opening of the Season, and much more! Keep an eye on our socials and website for more information.
Our Club Manager, Kym, has left for maternity leave, and we all wish her well. During her absence, please direct any issues to the office or to myself and the committee and I will attend to them as soon as possible. My contact information, along with that of other committee members, is at the front of the Tide. Feel free to reach out or chat with us at the club.
New membership applications are on hold until renewal time. We will monitor renewals closely before accepting new members to avoid long queues at the bar and running out of food on Sundays.
You have all received an email regarding our new constitution. We appreciate you taking the time to read and comment on the updates, which are necessary due to new government legislation. This will be discussed and voted on at the AGM on August 19th, where any changes to the current committee will also take place. We encourage you to attend the AGM as it is your club.
Earlier this month, the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club received an award from the Hon. Albert Jacob and the City of Joondalup for our contribution to the community. It's fantastic to hear that our club is making a difference within the community.
We are well into the construction phase, with changes happening weekly. We have good communication with Georgiou, keeping us updated on developments. If anything will directly affect the club, we will advise you in plenty of time to minimise disruption. Our Marina Subcommittee is working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the best outcome for the club and its members. As previously mentioned, we will soon lose much of the grass on the south side due to temporary fencing for initial excavation. The final position will be determined once the RSL memorial is moved into storage.
Lastly, all children must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times while at the club. This is required by law as we are a licensed premises. Please be friendly, courteous, and respectful to all members and patrons so we can all enjoy the club's facilities in the future.
Do your best to stay dry and warm during winter and we will be back by, on, or in the water before the not too distant future.

WOW, it has been two months since our last boat comp! The endless summer continues with flawless weather for this comp. 32 fisheries soaking up the conditions for a great day on the water.
We had some excellent catches on the day and it was our Mini Juniors who had a great day out. Taylor Gaucci picked up 2 species, 2.96kg of bag weight, 37.9 points and third overall in the Mini Juniors. In second was Harvey Thomson with 3 species, one being a cracking little Dhufish, 3.481kg of weight and 49 points. In first for the Mini Juniors was Jade Gaucci with 4 species, very good sized Baldchin Grouper included, 2.38kg and 62.8 points. Well done Jade and to all the Mini Juniors involved. We had only two vets out this day. Geoff Leighton running in second with good bag of fish. Geoff had 4 species, 4.89kg and 67.8 points. In first for the vets was Terry Bell with 7 species, 13.273kg and 138.5 points, great bag buddy.
Over to the Ladies and it is so good to see them showing the boys how to get it done. In 3rd position and first time comp we have Joane Leighton with 1 specie, 0.121kg and 10.2 pointsbeats sitting on the couch. In second position with 4 species, 6.97kg and 72 points was Sally Gaucci. In 1st position with 6 species, 2.91kg, 89.8 points was Belinda Mallon.
UPCOMING EVENTS

Second we had Rob Walters with 7 species, 9.62kg and 101.2 points. And I cannot remember who come first - arrr my deckie RED. Red had a solid bag of 7 species, 21.276kg and 130.6 points - well done mate!

Our endless summer keeps producing some epic fishing conditions and for this comp it was going to light easterlies once again for the majority of the day with absolute zero swell.
Normally when we have good weather we get a good interest to fish with it. We had 32 sign on and 13 boats out on the Saturday for this comp to soak up the beautiful conditions.
A few boats managed to get out wider to take advantage of the calmer weather and it paid dividends. Sean Neil nabbing himself a very respectable Pink Snapper along with the very elusive and very tasty as RED Snapper. Young Harvey Spark found a couple of good fish including the biggest Baldchin Grouper of the day at 2.32kg! Rob Walters landing a very nice Trevally at 1.234kg and Wayne Elliot's Dhufish of 6.19kg was also a very reasonable sized fish for our local waters.
Back at the club for the weigh we had full house for the weigh with plenty of onlookers keen to see what had been caught for the day. Starting of with our Mini Juniors and it was a solo stand out effort by Harvey Spark taking the chocolates with 2 heaviest including his cracker baldy, 4.013kg of bag weight and 40 points. Great effort. The Juniors had a some new names on the podium. In 3rd position with 1 species, 2.64kg and 21.3 points was Harry Austin. In second position with 2 species, 0.951kg and 33.9 points was Mitchell Selth. In first with 2 species, 4.054kg and 40.1
Two Day Boat Comp 4 & 5 May 2024
points was Stewy Graves. So good to see our Juniors getting in on the action.
The Veterans was between two good mates and coming in second was Wayne Elliot. Wayno had 1 specie, it was the biggest dhu for the day, 6.19kg and 28.4 points. Coming in first was Geoff Leighton with 4 species, 5.518kg and 69 points - Great work Geffro.
The Ladies are up next and we keep getting more and more interest in this category which makes it very exciting. In third for the ladies with 5 species, 4.352kg and 70.7 points was Christine Walters. In second position with 6 species, 2.909kg and 77.8 points was Robin O’Sullivan. In first position with a cracking bag, 8 species, 11.631kg and 127.3 points was Belinda Mallon - she cannot be stopped!
The Mens was another close one between the top 4 scorers. Rob Walters coming in 3rd with 7 species, 5.4kg and 98.8 points. In second with 6 species, 14.775kg and 101.6 points was Daniel “Noodles” Mallon. In first was Buckets with 9 species, 7.66kg and 123.3 points. Good work lads and some decent fish that can actually be eaten in amongst it.
Our next boat comp would have been our two day boat comp at the start of May. Fingers crossed the summer keeps rolling on.

So the Endless Summer weather finally came to an end for our two day boat comp - Booooo.
The Saturdays forecast was 15-20 knots South West with some a little bit of swell just to keep you on your toes. Sunday was going to be the more favorable day out of the two. We had 9 boats with 21 anglers signing on for the two day event.
Many tactics employed on the Saturday to try and get some runs on the board early in the game. I went out wide to the FADS to try for some pelagic action and it was definitely on the “sporty” side of things out that way. It was nice to get back on land that is for Sure. Sunday was the complete polar opposite, next to no wind at all and a dropping swell.
Sunday being as calm as it was made it a good day to get the young ones out on the water.
Boat Comp 15 June 2024
Once again we had a very good turn out of Mini Juniors for the weigh in. There was also plenty of spectators interested in the days catch. Starting with our Mini Juniors and coming in 3rd with 3 species, 0.510kg and 49 points was Jade Gaucci. In Second with 4 species, 12.237kg and 70.5 points was Toby Weymouth. Tobes landed his first Sambo at 11.94kg and it was the biggest for the whole weigh in - well done mate. In first position with 5 species, 6.569kg and 81.1 points was Lucy Weymouth. Well done grommets.
In our Junior division it was a solo effort by Stewart Graves getting the job done with a good Pink Snapper and tasty little Baldi. Stew had 2 species, 3.833kg and 39.7 points. Good work bud.
Majority of our Veterans where away for this one and it was only Terry up for the category.
Terry made the most of the two day event and had a bomb bag of fish. 11 species, 7.930kg and 191.9 points - cracker score.
Onto the ladies and once again we have another new face up on the podium. In third with 4 species, 1.212kg and 60.4 point was Samatha Tunahurst. In second with 6 species, 4.100kg and 86.2 points was Sally Gaucci. In First position with a belter bag of fish was May Walters.
May had 8 species, 11,772kg and 133.5 points - awesome bag. Mays bag included a very good sized gummy shark that was the biggest for the weigh in at 7.460kg. Well done May.
The mens was a shoot out with some familiar faces getting in on the action. In third with 7 species, 11.073kg and 104.1 points was Rob Walters.
In second with 8 species, 4.443kg and 106.9 points was our fishing captain Franga. Running in first with 7 species, 22.163kg and 144.3 point was Buckets. I have to mention the metro Spanish Mackerel, 9.030kg, I managed to land with the help of the kids on the Sunday - they did great job.
Thanks to all that helped at the weigh including Belinda for getting photos in the absence of Maree.
Boat Captain Buckets signing out.

Summary
Mystery fish gets caught!! A big variety of species landed including Snapper, Sambo, Salmon, Dart, Wobbygong Shark, Mulloway, Blackfish, King George, Breaksea Cod and a thumping Yellowfin Whiting. Clive dominates the Vets and Tyla has a field day down on the south coast.
Highlights
It’s been quite extraordinary the last few months and in particular the last few weeks since the opening of the demersal season with the unreal weather patterns we are getting. Its not uncommon for all the shite weather to fall on the weekends then turn beautiful right as everyone’s going back to work!! Unfortunately for myself, I was unable to embrace this weather having some pretty important events on (Brothers engagement party). As much as I wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else, I was slightly envious of my fellow anglers who would be camped on the beach sipping a few cold ones, whilst staring at the stars waiting for that big one to swim past!
We had 16 anglers weigh in for the April comp, with only Crew bell representing the Mini’s/Juniors combined. Regardless he weighed in a very good bag of 4 fish including a 3.73kg Salmon! Although not generally regarded as the best eating table fish they are highly sort after for sport fishing as they fight hard an often jump out the water trying to shake the hooks! In the ladies Catherine Edwards locked away third place with a 304g Pike. Maree had an impressive bag of 4 species caught locally.
Next Beach comp will be on the 18 & 19 May. We also have our second away comp for the year which will be held in Binningup Caravan park on the June long weekend. You can still fish wherever you like as there are no boundaries, but the weigh in will be held at the caravan park at 4pm. If you intend to fish this comp I would look at trying to get accommodation at the park ASAP to avoid missing out.
All 4 of Maree’s fish were the heaviest with her Flathead of 362g the most impressive! Bron’s impressive bag of 6 species including a nice Pink Snapper of 2.88kg was enough to take out first place. Bron also got a good Skippy of 577g and Tailor of 542g.
After a few comps at the top Ricko could only manage third place this month. After double figure species numbers for as many comps as I can remember he could only scratch together 6 for April. Terry had a pretty decent bag of 10 fish with a 780g Wirrah Cod and 442g Flattie! Clive fished well securing the top spot in the Vets. Clive had Terry digging up old records to find out he was only 20g off the heaviest Yellowfin Whiting with Clive’s going a whopping 465g. I measured this chunka and it was 37cm, this was by far the most impressive fish caught this weekend and there were some good fish caught! Clive also weighed in a Wobbygong Shark at 8.66kg, I really hope he has some sharp knives at home!
Jeff Porter put forward an impressive bag in the mens, getting him third place. His 8 species included a 588g Wrasse, 1.99g King George Whiting, a 457g Sea Trumpeter and a 395g Tarwhine. Second place was taken by Kiwi with 9 species and almost 13kg of weight. Kiwi got
himself a Pinky of 4.38kg and a 6kg Sambo, Yummy!!! #notjoking. The winner in the blokes was Tyla. Tyla travelled the miles to get the smiles, as they say. Tyla ended up with 12 species including a Western Rock Blackfish (1.217kg), Breaksea Cod (618g), Leatherjacket, Sweep (513g) and Black Bream (367g). Unfortunately, the one fish he couldn’t find were the Salmon but with 12 species its hard to complain… unless your Tyla aha jk!
I think it’s worth mentioning some other impressive bags that were weighed in but didn’t make it into the placings. Rob Yates had a great bag of 7 species with a big Herring (330g) 1g off the biggest, a Flathead (522g), King George Whiting (177g) and Tailor (513g). Rob ended up with a score of 91 points and over 2kg of weight. Great work! Mark Purchas had 5 species with a 2kg Wobbygong Shark and a Mullet of 141g. Mark finished with 72 points so was in the mix of guys who were just out of the top 3. Adam Broadhead finished 4 species, 108 points and some quality fish. Adam weighed in the only Mulloway of the comp at 3.65kg and the biggest Tailor of 1.197kg.
He is chomping at the heels and if he keeps progressing will no doubt find himself fighting for a spot in the top in the coming months. Clive not only fished a good comp but he also took out the Mystery fish which ended up being a Wrasse. Clive collected around $160, plus $30 for the extra species AND a free pint of Guinness from Locky after wiping the floor with him!
Rob Meneguz
Magical Weather again on display for our May Comp. The mystery Mulloway (the random mystery fish) was surprisingly not caught, even though a few silver ghosts have been showing up on my Facebook feed of late. Tyla’s closing in on Daniel Bell with a solid Sambo of almost 7.5kg.
Next beach comp is on the June long weekend (1st & 2nd)
We had 20 anglers’ weight in for the May comp, but there was at least 21 anglers fishing. I even managed to wet a line myself briefly on Saturday night, however, didn’t manage to put anything into a hessian bag. We only had the one solo mini junior fishing, so Crew Bell obviously took out the win! In the Vets we had Clive back up last months effort claiming victory again! Clive had a great bag mirroring last comps stats with 8 species 5 heaviest. Clive managed to add a Garfish to his species count for the year! It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Clive though, getting himself into a rather sticky situation with his 4WD on the verge of a drop off close to the water’s edge. Ricko came second, also with 8 species but only the 2kg of weight. In third place was Locky, with 6 species, 3 heaviest. Seems like the bigger fish were a little bit scarce compared to the last few comps.
In the Ladies Donna Morrison finished up with third place. Donna not only got to enjoy spending time away with her husband Alex and their new toy (Camper Trailer), but she managed to find herself up on the leader board. Donna got herself a Skippy and Herring. Carolyn and husband John fished locally, with Carolyn weighing in 2 species to find herself second in the ladies. Carolyn had a decent Skippy of 471g and good Tailor at 540g.
The unbeatable Bron again topped the ladies and husband Kiwi…… Bron snagged herself another decent Pink Snapper of almost 3kg, along with a Shovelnose Shark which she released after claiming the points from a photo on a brag mat. Bron fished well catching 7 species!
In the men’s, Vince Cox came third with the heaviest Tailor. Vince also caught a stonking Sand Whiting of 214g. In second place was Joe Wettinger, also claiming 6 species, including another catch and release Shovelnose. Joe also managed to catch the heaviest Garfish (164g) and Flathead (481g) of the comp. Joe tallied 115 points keeping him right in the mix at the top end of the leader board. Tyla continues his charge towards the top position, posting a great score of a 136 points. Tyla had a Sambo in his esky which weighed 7.34kg. Tyla also had a decent Skippy of 598g and the only Yellowtail Scad of the day collecting his own sponsored prize. Daniel Bell had other commitments this weekend but with Tyla and Kiwi breathing down his neck decided he would

sneak out for a few hours on Saturday morning. In those few hours Daniel managed to get himself 5 species including a Tailor of 1.32kg, the biggest of the day. Time will tell how important those few hours will make in the final scores of the overall results.

Wild weather forecast seeing some BIG snapper get caught. Clive gets a stonker Black Bream and decent Tarwhine! Limited anglers fishing opting to stay in the warmth of their homes for this comp.
Our run of luck of good weather over the past 12-18 months couldn’t last forever, even though I kept thinking this same thought repeatedly from previous comps. Well finally the forecast was set to wreak havoc over our June comp, which was bang smack in the middle of two low pressure systems. The first hit on the Tuesday beforehand with the second forecasting to hit Saturday evening/Sunday morning(comp weekend). Social media was going mental with plenty of snapper getting caught around the local marinas, so I was looking forward to seeing a few get weighed in on Sunday, I was not disappointed
Unfortunately, we only had 8 anglers weigh in which is understandable keeping in mind the forecast. No Mini Juniors, Juniors of Women weighed a bag in this comp. We only had the 1 Veteran weigh in which was Clive. Clive wouldn’t of been disappointed with his 5 species which included a good Tarwhine of 570g and a stonker Black Bream of 739g. Joe and Clive fished locally around several spots both getting a decent mixed bag, They were just missing the Snapper which would of really capped it off. Joe had a decent bag which only narrowly missed out on the third place with 82 points. Joe had the heaviest Herring of the
We have a 6 week break until the next beach fishing comp which is the 20th/21st of July
Clive Powell
day at 350g and a very nice Sand Whiting of 188g. Infact, between the 7 men’s competitors there wasn’t a huge gap between 1st and 6th (106-73). Adam Broadhead finished 5th in the men’s but had the most species of anyone (7). Adam ended up with 78 points, 1.86kg of weight but unfortunately didn’t get any heaviest even though he got some decent fish. Adams bag consisted of a Tailor (773g), Herring (340g), Tarwhine (340g), Skippy (331g), King George (145g), Flathead (251g) and a Wrasse (166g).
In the Men’s third place was claimed by Mitchell Bell. Mitch had a mixed bag of 6 species with a nice chunky winter Tailor of 1.22kg. Mitch also weighed in a new club record of a Sea Mullet at 621g. Tyla came second narrowly missing out on first place by only 4 points. Tyla had a wicked Pink Snapper of 6.16kg the only Sweep of the day at 296g and the only Yellowtail Scad of 137g. Kiwi took the honours this month narrowly beating Tyla with a score of 106 points. Kiwi got a monster Snapper of 7.44kg which was 86cm long. Kiwi also got himself a Leatherjacket (647g), Tarwhine (330g), Wrasse (986) and a baby Herring of 86g. Kiwi and Tyla both got these Snapper on Saturday morning claiming at the time, the conditions were absolutely glamour! Just shows you don’t always need to fish the peak of the storm to catch them. They generally hang around for a day or 2 after or just approaching a storm. The weigh in on Sunday was held undercover outside of the Masons bar to avoid anyone getting struck by lightning or just absolutely soaked! I would like to personally thank everyone who helped out at the weigh in as I was unable to attend being up north at Wagoe for a few days.

Hello Sailors,
The sailing section has completed this year’s sailing calendar a little early this due to closure of four ramps at the Ocean Reef Marina.
The end of the Summer season of racing had to be condensed to allow us to finalise the Summer season and complete this year’s series of racing before the ramp closure.
With the reduction of available ramps, the addition of another silt screen, next year’s racing season is going to be a challenge, especially as the loss of ramp 8 will restrict the larger deep keel boats to launching only at high tide.
Next year’s sailing season starts in a couple of weeks, so the challenges of launching and manouvering will be become more apparent.
On a lighter note, the Sailing section’s presentation evening is, at the time of writing, this week (15 June), where we celebrate the achievements of the 2023-24 sailing season.
The presentation and awards includes the winners of the long races (Alkimos and Centaur races), the Rear Commodore’s cup, the three racing season winners (Winter, Spring, Summer) as well as regatta awards, sailing section club person of the year and crew person of the year.
The awards culminate with the trophy for the champion boat 2023-24, the best of luck to all that have competed this year and the next issue of Tide will include a list of this years awards.
We also have the sailing section AGM in a couple of weeks time, where all committee positions are up for reelection, so if you have an interest please feel free to give me a call.
See you back on the water, for the 2024-25 season, where I trust the additional challenges inside the harbour can be overcome.
Kind regards
Andy Hodkinson

Welcome to this quarterly tide report from the Power Boat section.
Our major event for this quarter was the section trip north to Jurien Bay which is looking to be an ongoing event in the section calendar.
The first of the team, Rick and Trish Green headed to Jurien Bay on Thursday afternoon to prepare the accommodation for the remainder of the team arriving over the next 24 hours.
The section again rented a very large Airbnb home that has ample accommodation for 4 couples plus a caravan or two. This amazing home is owned by members of the ORSSC and can be found by searching Airbnb under “At The Bay” have a look and support our members, you will not be disappointed,
We were grateful to Laurie Campbell (Rear Commodore Diving) for bringing his boat to town and making it available for the team to get out onto the water. Laurie and Graham (ORSSC Club Commodore) were kind enough to take the plunge in search of some delicacies from the sea to add to the nightly dining feast. The expedition seems to have gone largely to plan for Laurie and Graham except for a missing catch bag, It would have been quite to the site seeing our Commodore swimming to the surface with both hands full of fish and crayfish juggling the lot and not undoing Laurie’s hard work with the spear.
The haul included a Dhufish, Blue Bone Gropper and crayfish. Amongst the best eating from the ocean these delicacies were prepared as panko coated Cray fish bites and fish fillets BBQ to perfection.
As always, the afternoons and evening were of a social nature and a spirited game of Finska on the lawn brought out the competitive nature of all involved. The late nights were followed by early morning swims led by Helen Grimes, nothing like the cool of the ocean to clear the head for the day’s activities.
Sunday Afternoon saw several ORSSC boaties / divers heading further north for a boating and fishing adventure in and around the Abrolhos Islands, also coinciding with Graham’s Big 60 th birthday week celebrations. We had the pleasure of welcoming Keryn Baronet and Tanya Beaumont on Sunday night as they travelled to Jurien to see their husbands off on the fishing trip, a fun night was certainly had.
Planning is underway for our annual section dinner and invitations will be issued shortly so please keep a look out. Other events on the horizon will be a presentation later in the season by the Department of Transport where they will update members on the new boating regulations and provide an inspection and repair workshop for your inflatable life jackets and flare disposal.
We have a special request from our long term members in Frank and Phyl Vincent, their grand daughter has recently started working at “Cruiseabout”, based at Whitfords Shopping Centre, so if you are in the market for a cruise, please give Lucy a call and let her know you are from ORSSC and you are sure to be looked after.
As always the section is on the look out for members to come along to any of our activities and I ask you to please reach out to powerboat@orssc.asn.au to be included on our mailing list for future events.
Kind regards,
Stephen Lazenby

Off-the-grid adventures are a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of routine life, offering a chance to immerse oneself in nature for a while. However, when the electrics are left behind, it can add a touch of unplanned excitement to the journey!
Recently, the Divers section embarked on a camping trip, seeking refuge from city life in a more natural setting. Opting for a tree change, they spent a weekend on my farm in Bambun. The adventure began with the Greens & the Hindley’s bravely leading the way, albeit initially lost, but ultimately triumphing by locating the campsite's entrance after a scenic detour. Their navigation skills earned them the Early Bird prize, setting a high bar for the rest of the group.
While Google Maps excels on the bitumen roads, it tends to lose its way on gravel, leading some astray. Those who diligently read the email directions easily found the camp by following the orange cones. However, for those who missed the memo, finding camp became a bit of a treasure hunt, a lesson in the importance of reading instructions or heeding simple hints like "follow the cones." Kate clinched the First Prize for Navigating, proving that a little attention to detail goes a long way.
The campsite began to take shape as caravans settled in and tents dotted the landscape, resembling a mini tent city. After setting up, the group headed to the Gingin Pub for lunch, turning the once-quiet eatery into a lively hub. The staff admirably accommodated the sudden influx, serving up delicious food that quickly disappeared from plates. A visit to this charming country pub is highly recommended.
With satisfied bellies, the group returned to camp, navigating the worn track with their 4WD skills. As evening approached, preparations for a campfire dinner began in earnest. The smell of pork and lamb roasts cooking on the Webbers filled the air, complemented by diced pumpkin, carrots, corn, and potatoes ready for baking.
As the tunes played and the campfire crackled, the scent of eucalypt wafted around. The old Metters stove came to life, boiling water and providing warmth. After dinner, with glasses in hand, everyone relaxed into their chairs. Rai, sporting her comfortable onesie, joined in the chatter as the night ended, the silence only broken by the campfire's crackling.
The following morning, the Aurora sky greeted Mother's Day, and the men quickly assembled a breakfast feast. Meanwhile, the ladies enjoyed cocktails prepared by Tayna Beaumont, who joined the group for the day.
An event like this requires many hands. So, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Bronte Rosher for all your help in organising the food and keeping me focused and calm, and for all the prefarm preparation, for cooking the roasts, and for all other extracurricular events that contributed to the fabulous weekend. This weekend marked a first but certainly not the last. Everyone pitched in, whether constructing a waterspout, fixing a cars under guard, setting up a swag, or washing up after meals. It was a pleasure to host such a fantastic group of people on my patch.

The Commodores Cray Competition was run over the 23rd and 24th March, with the weigh in on Sunday 1pm. The prizes of 1st, 2nd and 3rd were donated by the Commodore, Graham Hindley.
What an amazing Sunday, fantastic turn out from the MAAC, HYC and ORSSC divers. Some fantastic catches by the competitors. First Prize ($250) the biggest crayfish being 2.56kg from Brian of HYC, Second prize ($150) the biggest bag full 15.43kg from Jamie of MAAC and Third prize ($100) 13.12kg going to Andre from MAAC. A big thank you for Gary and Chuck for their contribution to the catch.
Once the competition was done it was time to start having some well earnt refreshments and cooking the catch, the fantastic team of Erick, Jan, Fran, Bee, Kate, Lina, Mick, Chuck and Peter doing a phenomenal effort to prepare crays for BBQing, boiling and deep fry with a spread of salads from the kitchen. A big thank to the staff in the kitchen for the deep fry.
A big thank you was received from the MAAC and HYC for a well-run afternoon with a fantastic team.
Cheers!

This article will provide the members an update on the plans to relocate the Club’s facilities within the new marina. Though there have been delays, the overall intention and plan remain unchanged. DevelopmentWA will construct the new facility as part of their overall Marina Development project. Once completed, the new facility will be handed over to the City of Joondalup, who will in turn lease the facility to the ORSSC. The Club’s future hardstand will be managed through a lease with the Department of Transport.
The estimated timeline for the Club’s relocation has been adjusted to align with the latest proposed start date for construction of the new facility.
• Start works on ORSSC building site – 3Q 2024.
• Present draft lease agreement to membersJan 2025.
• Operational readiness for relocation - Q3/Q4 2025.
• Present final lease agreement to membersAug 2025.
• Vacate current location - 4Q 2025.
The building concept presented as Option 3 to the members in 2023 has not changed. The City of Joondalup intends to issue a preliminary building permit to allow the start of site works in July, with a review and approval of the final design before issuing the full permit. ORSSC will have the opportunity to review the final design prior to the issue of the overall building permit.
The Club’s Marina Sub-Committee have been providing input on the needs of the Club to the to the project’s architect. The latest issues to be resolved were the layouts for the kitchen and bar service areas, and fit out of the 1st floor deck. These have now been resolved, and will be included in the final design. As construction proceeds, both the City and the Club will monitor the works to ensure issues over detail design and fit out do not compromise the quality and functionality of the facility.
On the basis of contractor pricing, the project budget increased to approximately $12 million. Through a Value Engineering effort, this was reduced to $9.5 million. The Club’s contribution of $1.75 million, as voted by the members, is unchanged. The remaining funding will be come from the State and the City, with the Club’s contribution provided through a loan from the City.
The City of Joondalup issued a two-year Notice of Termination for the existing lease last year, with the provision that the premises would not be vacated until the new facility was ready for occupation. Negotiations with the City for the new lease have begun, and the Club will be availing itself to legal advice to ensure a fair outcome for ORSSC.
The State announced a $49 million budget allocation to the DOT for marina development, including facilities for MRW, and the DevelopmentWA confirmed they will coordinate the meeting with the DOT to discuss the future hardstand and pens.
DevelopmentWA’s civil contractor, Georgiou, have been on site since February, and their works around the Club are apparent. Their current overall project timeline includes;
• Bulk earthworks for the next few months sitewide.
• Cutting and filling north of the Club area for future residential, retail and commercial development.
• Land reclamation works for the new boat ramps started 6 May and are ongoing.
• Services for the future car park are being installed now for drainage, power and irrigation ducts for landscaping.
• Services in the north of site are expected to commence over the next month or so.
• A temporary overflow carpark for Club members was opened 17 May and will be available until the area is required for Stage One scope of works.
Construction issues that directly affect the Club include:
Ramps – There are currently four ramps in operation, and while there is sufficient parking, we can anticipate delays to launching and retrieval with the reduction of eight ramps to only four.
Memorial removal – The RSL Memorial will be removed and stored until the erection in its new location. There will be a temporary construction site fence sectioning off the most of the southern side grassed area for safety purposes. The removal is expected to take two weeks, but the start date is still to be determined.
Adjacent excavations – After the removal of the Memorial, the construction fence line will be extended to the perimeter of our leased area. In addition to the loss of lawn area, we will lose the external limestone carpark. The CoJ responded to our concerns regarding the risks these excavations present to the Club by reviewing the Dilapidation Report and assigning a staff member to regularly inspect the building for damage during construction.
The Club meets with Georgiou fortnightly to discuss upcoming construction issues and our concerns. Georgiou has addressed some of our concerns, including traffic management and dust suppression, and provided updates for their activities:
The Marina Development Sub-Committee held their first risk management workshop last week. The purpose of the workshops is to identify the major risks to the Club associated with the marina development, and to develop measures to mitigate those risks. A number of potential risks were discussed, and outcomes from this and future workshops will be forwarded to the Management Committee with associated recommendations.
The Marina Sub-Committee has made the following recommendations to the Management Committee
• ORSSC to review the plans and specifications, and to meet regularly with the CoJ staff and Byte Construction.
• Committee to review the Future Fund, identify specific needs, allocate funding, and determine spending approval procedures.
• Committee to obtain legal advice on measures to mitigate risks to the Club associated with the existing and new lease with the CoJ and the DOT.

It is a important part of some people’s lives and week to get out and socialise and mix with others”. I tend to agree as it definitely breaks the monotony of my now working week cycle.
