From the Commodore

G’Day Members,

We’re well and truly in the thick of winter, with the cold and wet weather settling in but there’s something exciting on the horizon! If you look down the hill, you’ll see our new facility coming to life, changing by the day.

The Committee was fortunate to take a walk through the club site in early June. With doors and windows now installed it’s really starting to feel like the amazing venue we’ve all been waiting for. We’re still being told completion will be around October 2025, so fingers crossed it stays on track and we’re up and running in time for summer.

Please keep an eye on the clubhouse screens and noticeboards we’ll be posting updates and key information as things progress. A big thank you to the Committee and staff who are working tirelessly behind the scenes. There are new challenges every week, and they continue to tackle them head on to ensure we deliver the best club possible.

Also in June we had the sad news of the passing of one of our founding member / Rear Commodore / Commodore / Patron and Architect of our Current Club Ian Younghusband and a active member of the Sailing Section, ORSSC was honoured that the

Family gave us privilege of holding the service and wake of such and important person of our history. Unfortunately Ian will not be able to see us transition to the new facility, our best wishes go to Jill and the rest of the family and hope they will keep their association with the club for many years to come as will always be welcome.

A quick reminder about showing your membership card with every transaction, regardless of how often you visit or who you are. This is important for two reasons:

1. To protect you. During busy times, staff are doing their best to keep queues short. Having your card ready helps avoid errors like someone else’s member number being typed in by mistake.

2. To protect your club. You’ve paid for the privilege of membership, and it’s our duty to ensure the club is being used by members, not non-members. We’ve seen a big drop in unauthorised access thanks to these processes.

When we move to the new facility, security will be tighter. You’ll need your card to access the front door and for all transactions, so we’re getting

everyone into the habit now. Guest sign-ins will also be recorded and monitored, in line with our obligations. Please note:

• Standard membership: 4 guests at a time, up to 3 times in a 6-month period

• Single membership: 2 guests at a time, up to 3 times in a 6-month period

For our Hardstand Members, please ensure that you are following the rules and the correct procedures of accessing the Hardstand to keep all boats and members safe. If you are unsure of any of the house rules, please check your emails as they have been sent to you in the past or contact our Club Manager and she will be able to provide you with any information that you need.

As always it would not be my report without mentioning that we are a licensed premises and there are certain criteria that comes with that. One important one: children must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Please be mindful, especially on wet days when everyone is indoors. Downstairs is a galley and restaurant, not a playground and with hot food being carried, we don’t want to see anyone hurt.

A couple of important dates for your calendar:

• Commodore’s Ball – 19th July Theme: Hollywood Glitz and Glamour

• AGM – 18th August

Nominations for committee positions must be submitted to the Secretary by 17th July.

That’s all from me for now. As always, if you need information or updates, feel free to chat to any of the Committee we’re always around and happy to talk about our fantastic club and its members.

Stay safe whether you are on, by or under the water as that is what brings us all together the love of the ocean.

The Angling Report

April Boat Comp

We have been on a roll with the weather gods this season and this one was going to work in our favour again. A very promising long range forecast for the Saturday and we were not let down. The wind was a gentle easterly all day, slightly swung in the afternoon and the swell stayed right out of the picture. This would give all a great opportunity to get into some fish. It’s good to see that when the weather does play the game how many anglers are keen to wet a line within the club. 32 signed on and 13 boats headed out to enjoy what Autumn had to offer. Plenty of junior anglers in this one and all got into some very nice fish. Young Zane Dean landing a cracking Baldie that took out the biggest for the day. The Davitt girls finding the fish including a very respectable King George whiting for Lucy. Good thing she kept dad away from her fish this time so he did not let them go again! Jade Gaucci caught a Breaksea cod that also took out the biggest for the comp, nice work Jade, one of my favorites to eat. Mason Kross finding himself a nice little Dhufish for the morning and letting dad know how it’s done. Both the Marsden boys showing grandad proud again with a decent snapper each amongst there bag of species. We seen a few more sharks weighed in this comp. Tony O’Sullivan and Chuckie landing a couple of nice eating Gummy Sharks, the type we want to catch. Terry Bell picked up the biggest shark for the comp – “sand bar whaler” looking critter that went just over 8kg. Surprising to see not one Samson fish weighed for this comp, maybe the water temp has something to do with it? I am sure we will see more come on the bite with the cooler weather approaching.

Onto the weigh in and it was actually pretty hectic. Not just because we had a decent amount of fish to weigh. But a kids party had just ended, all the little ones where all sugared up, firing on 8 cylinders, full face paint-war paint, some where actually banging on the perspex

housing to get more fish on the scales – it was like a battle zone out there man. I wish sugar still done that to me! The mini juniors section had a great turn out but we could only fit three of them on the podium.

In third with 4 species, 2 heaviest, 1.864kg and 55.7 point was Ashton Marsden. In second, by only 2 points was Lucy Davitt. Lucy had 4 species, 4 heaviest, 1.185kg and 66.4 points. In first by the skin her nose was Jade Gauci. Jade’s bag had 4 species, 3 heaviest, 5 .082kg and 68.2 points! So many good bags weigh in by the mini juniors.

The Junior section we had Mason Kross up in second with 1 specie, 1 heaviest, 1.611kg and 19.2 points. In first with 4 species, 4 heaviest, 2.606kg and 69.2 points was Cruz Marsden. Well done boys.

The Vets seen an all out holocaust. Colesy managed to get a bait in the water whilst looking after the grandkids and picked up 2 species for his troubles, 1 heaviest, 345grams and 26.7points. Terry Bell had a belter of a comp with some decent weight to go with. 8 species, 7 heaviest, 20.679kg and 163.4 points! Dropping Bombs lol. Terry also had the biggest Dhufish for the day at 9.38kg which is above par out of Ocean Reef Marina these days.

The ladies had our 3 regulars getting the gloves on again to duke it out on top. Sally Gaucci in third with 4 species, 3 heaviest, 3.426kg and 64.9 points. In second was Belinda “I still don’t touch fish” Mallon. Bel had 6 species, 3 heaviest, 2.587kg and 83.2 points. Way out there first, no self deployed burley again was Sam “Tunahurst”. Sam had the most species caught for the entire comp with 9! Awesome. She also had 5 heaviest, 4.252kg and cracking the ton with 128.5 points. See, less spewy, more catchy!

Onto the boy men and only 13 points separated the top 3. In third with 8 species, 2 heaviest, 5.432kg and 102.9 points was Elliot “Whiskers Tunahurst”. Second and I

write this very loudly was my deckie Red, right back where he belongs, made him tie his own knots after consecutively kicking my butt for the last 3 months. Red also had 8 species, 2 heaviest, 8.710kg and 109.4 points. Finally in first and over the Xmas hangover was Buckets. Also with 8 species, 3 heaviest, 8.559kg and 115.1 points!

Having the comp on the Saturday allowed us to have the sausage sizzle on again. Thanks to the Gaucci's family for organizing, cooking. Pretty sure Bel “I still don’t touch fish” Mallon was helping cook so thank you also. The lads helping at the weigh in, Ricko, Terry, possibly a bit of Mitch in there and Kiwi – Legends. Mumma Maree on the photos getting it done as normal.

Special mention to Lucy Davitt for helping me keep all the little sugared up, war face painted kids at bay during the weigh in! Thank you Lucy. It’s great to see our young ones not only getting involved with fishing but making little differences around the club.

Next Comp Is the 2 day comp this coming weekend. Will keep you all posted. Buckets out.

May 2 day Comp

Weather forecast for the May 2 day boat comp was very decent for both days. Easterly was hunting both mornings up to 12knots which gave all anglers a chance to get on top of the inshore species. Then around lunchtime it backed rite off with enough time to feed the “horses some hay” and pin it out wide to get into the demersals. This mint weather again attracted a decent crew with 28 signing on across 11 boats.

Once again we had plenty of mini juniors getting out on the water and getting some really good catches. Ellie and Millie Tunhursts getting onboard the new Brumby Cat and finding it easy enough to get into some nice herring and whiting. Jade Gauci had a decent bag with a nice Pink Snapper. Also goes with out say, lil sis Taylor had a good bag with very respectable baldy weighed in. Little mention to Toby Weymouth catching and landing his first shark, was no replication of JAWS, but at a whopping 3 point something kilo he did not care less, man he was stoked! We had more gummy sharks weighed in for this comp and D&B Mallon having no issues finding these tasty critters. Dan Mallon also managed to get himself a decent harlequin, only one weighed in for the comp. Out of the 21 species on our list we once again had a good crack at ticking all boxes except 3. One of the more prized species on our list and one I think every angler can respect when they see a decent sized one is the King George Whiting. Troy Clugston weighed in absolute kidney slapper at 1.020kg! beast mode KG, great catch buddy. The weigh in was a big one with some very hefty bags of fish coming through. Majority of anglers who took advantage of the decent weather as excepted had 8 plus species for the comp. The weigh in went longer than usual, but expected – should have brought a head torch and my glasses, hey. The Mini Juniors was a big show and the results did not disappoint. In third with 3 species, 1 heaviest, 2.758kg and 41.5 points was Jade Gauci. First and second seen a

brother sister rivalry/ competitiveness that could only be obviously obtained from one parent, being mother Sarah Weymouth - I am a dead man walking ! Lucy Weymouth in second with 7 species, 3 heaviest, 4.942kg and 97.9 points. Brother Toby taking the chocolates in this fierce battle with 7 species, 5 heaviest, 9.265kg and 118.5 points. Well done to all the mini juniors and great work to the mums and dads getting the kids out on the water again. We had no juniors fish this comp.

The Vets section had two contenders. Second favorite Vet Graham Coles taking the lunch shift, driving out, dropping a line, catching 1 sambo, releasing 1 sambo and then driving back in. Colsey therefore came second with 1 specie, 1 heaviest, 10kg and 36 points. In first with a very good pinkie that was the biggest for the comp was Geoff Leighton. Geoff had 3 species, 3 heaviest , 5.191kg and 58.4 points, Good work Gefro.

The ladies are up next and this top 3 rivalry is history in the making! Every comp they are catching more and more fish and really showing majority how it is done.

In 3rd with 8 species, 1 heaviest, 3.214kg and 92.4 points was Sam Tunahurst. Now I am not a man who gets scared easily but when I announced these next two scores incorrectly at the weigh in, I quickly was looking for some spare underwear! I feel so much safer behind a keyboard. In second and only just in second was Sally Gauci. Sal had 9 species, 6 heaviest, 11.932kg and 149.9 points! In first also with 9 species, 7 heaviest, 9.474kg and 150.9 points was Belinda Mallon. Some absolute belter bags of fish.

Leading into boy men and this was a showdown as well. Dan Mallon found himself up on the podium in third with his solid bag of fish. Dan had 9 species, 6 heaviest, 11.409kg and 148.8 points. First and second seen a different skipper/deckie dual it out for the win.. In second and with a bag of species that would normally win most

comps,12 species, Tony O’Sullivan. Tony had 12 species, 2 heaviest, 11.738kg and 155.5 points. Skipper Rob Walters showing the deckie how it is done. Chuckie also had 12 species, 6 heaviest, 8.875kg and 173.8 points! Man that is a massive score and well deserved mate.

Thanks to Kiwi, Dan Bell, Rico and Lucy Davit for weigh in duties, all ran smoothly as expected, well it did in my eyes. Mumma Marree for all our happy snaps.

One quick shout again to the folk who helped on the Saturday with The Metro Menace Mayhem fishing comp. D Bell, Little Joe, Lucy Davitt, Lucy Weymouth and Crew Bell. We had plenty on the bench also ready to tag in if needed. The Menace crew where so thankful and aware how it

helped there competition succeed and are expecting bigger things next year thanks to our efforts. This is defiantly something our club and the people with in it can hang your hats on knowing how we can operate at a professional level as we proved. Next boat comp is 14th of June. Buckets out.

Beach Fishing Report –April 20245

Well, well, well, another comp, another weekend of crap conditions… who would have thought? But, with that we had another competition where our members proved that they are without a doubt some of the best fisherman and women on the coast. We had 18 members in total weigh in and 6 of those had 9 species or over which is very impressive in those conditions.

It’s fair to say I was a bit disheartened looking at the forecast for the weekend given we had had about 3 weeks of absolute glamour weather. Although it didn’t look exceptionally bad I knew that the spike in swell would mean one thing…WEED and green water, and boy was I right!

Crew and I woke to much more wind than expected and the first cast resulted in tonnes of weed, so much so in fact, Crew ended up snapping off as he was unable to budge it though the surf - not the way you want to start the comp! After a quick move, things did get better and for us it seemed the weed and green water didn’t hinder the fishing too much. On a positive note, due to the reoccurrence of the dreaded weed over the last few comps it’s clear to see that most members now have a variety of good spots to fish in all different conditions. The weather did improve Saturday night and Sunday morning although there was a lot of swell making some spots unfishable. But, that’s beach fishing and unlike boat fishing at least the size of your car doesn’t determine how far and wide you can travel in the conditions, making it fair across the board in any weather.

Unfortunately, this comp we were back down to one Mini Junior weighing in again although young Taj Davis did head away for the weekend, but was unable to land a weighable fish. He did however make it down to the club to catch up with his mate Crew and recap the weekend away with the old boys. I’m really stoked to see the little friendship formed between these two over their mutual love for fishing.

LUCKY COMPETITOR PRIZE

Crew fished hard all weekend and managed 5 species which is a good bag for a Mini Junior in any weekend, but for him it was a tough one as lots of fish, rigs and tempers were lost. Throughout the weekend he had tonnes of double ups on species and just undersized fish in general, but again, that’s fishing!

We were also light on in the Ladies division with only two competitors weighing in. Helen Brownfield came in 2nd place with 3 species (all 3 of them being the heaviest of their species), but once again Bronny took out first position, proving to be too strong to beat weighing in a whopping 10 species with 8 heaviest and a total of 11.5kg. Her bag included a lovely Flathead of just under 1kg, the only Mulloway weighed in for the comp and a respectable Wobbygong. Once again Bron well done, you really are a force to be reckoned with - If only you could teach Kiwi a thing or two!

The Vets were once again hotly contested, while first place was obvious just from his bag, the runner up positions were all very tight. Locky just trumped Terry Bell for 3rd place and Vince Cox had a great weekend and took out 2nd place. His bag included a beautiful Pink Snapper of 5.1kg and he also won the lucky competitor prize which was a nice consolation. Once again, the main man Ricko showed that no matter what the conditions, he can find fish! I’m not even sure I can say he is in fine form at the moment because at this point it’s just standard fishing from him. An impressive 12 species, 4 heaviest, 6.3kg for a grand total of 169 points, although nothing particularly stand out was in his bag, in whole it was more than enough for him to take the win.

Now for the men’s - Wow we had some good bags this month! It’s not often we see 9 or 10 species bags outside of the top 3, but this time we did. Once again it shows how our scoring system is just about spot on proving you really need a mix of weight and species to hit the podium.

With 10 species I thought I’d be right up there, but with little weight I only just scraped into 3rd place. I did however add 4 species to my ‘species specialist’ list, one of these being a really nice flounder of 579g which I struggled to land in the early part of the season. I can already see that the Species Specialist Category will be hotly contested (as it is most years). The 30 species mark is surely on the cards for someone this year!

Jeff Porter found himself in the runner up position this month, although only 8 species a small shovel nose of 5.2kg helped him over the line along with 4 other heaviest of species. And last but certainly not least, Kiwi took out 1st position with 10 species and 9kg of weight, including some really nice fish. A Flathead of 639g, a nice size Wobbie (which apparently was the small one he got over

Fishing Competition Results

Heaviest Species Winners & Sponsors

the weekend) and a really nice Tailor of 1.408kg were the pick of the bunch.

Some other notable catches were Jeff Porters Sand Whiting of 242g, Chris Graves monster Herring of 385g and a really big Brownspotted Wrasse caught by Locky of 785g (which also took out the mystery fish prize which bagged Locky a few more bucks for his weekends effort). Also notable will be the lack of photos from this comp. While I really encourage people to get a few photos during the comp of their own catches, the lack of pictures this month really makes us appreciate the work Mother Maree does at the weigh-ins taking photos. Once again thank you for all you do Maree, it doesn’t go unnoticed! Big thanks also to all involved again this competition. Our next comp will be held on the 3rd and 4th of May followed by (4 weeks later) our down south ‘away’ competition held at Walpole on 31st May–1st June.

Hope to see you all at these coming events.

The Angling Report (continued)

Beach Fishing Report –May 2025

I’m not even sure what to say at this point… so far, we are at 100% record this season for bad weather in our comps. I’ve been told Rob Meneguz will be taking back over as beach captain from now on as the weather was much better when he was at the helm, and it would appear that this is absolutely true, given we have had full months of amazing weather only to have two days of horrible stuff over the comp weekends (and we’re only just coming into the time of year where we would normally expect it!).

Oh well, this is life and for the 11 competitors who weighed in at the May competition, at least it seemed the fish were biting for most as some great bags were seen, given the weather conditions!

Kiwi and Bron took a punt to head North and escape the weather, and by all reports this was a good move (for the Saturday morning at least), while most others fished their normal stomping grounds and put up with the wind, weed and swell. Crew and I opted to not bother fishing until the Saturday night as he had his first game of footy for the season in the morning and I don’t think we missed out on much at all, as we woke to strong winds and pouring rain. This was not an easy comp for Crew to fish but after a few dummy spits here and there he did stay moving and managed a nice bag of 4 species, 3 heaviest, 1.06kg for 63 points, which was enough to take out the Mini Juniors category. It was good to see, once again, his little mate Taj Davis was at it again landing himself a nice Trumpeter which was the heaviest for the day for the Mini Juniors. I very much look forward to the growing competition between these two as they get older. As always, I’d like to say, while I know it isn’t easy getting your kids out there, they bloody love it, so maybe from time to time give them a run at a comp too if you can. Remember, they are the future of our Angling section!

As I mentioned earlier; Kiwi and Bron headed North to prospect some new ground, and it certainly didn’t

LUCKY COMPETITOR PRIZE

UPCOMING EVENTS

Walpole: 31st May–1st June

disappoint for Bronny. Once again, she had a standout bag of 6 species, 6 heaviest, 10.9kg for 140 points which included a nice Tailor, Wobbie, Wirrah and again, the only Mulloway for the comp – I believe that’s now 3 months in a row of weighing a Mully! While she was the only lady that fished this month, I’m sure a bag like that would have got her over the line either way.

The Vets was hard fought again this month. Clive Powell had a great bag of 9 species, 5 heaviest, 7.38kg for 150 points. His bag included a good size Wobbie which secured him in 2nd place. Ricko managed to hold the top spot (only marginally) as his bag of 9 species, 8 heaviest, 5.05kg for 159 points was just enough to get him over the line. He had the only Snapper for the day, along with multiple fish others couldn’t find.

Now, onto the Men’s.. Well, do we have a battle on our hands or what!? Kiwi unfortunately didn’t do as well as Bronny with 4 species, 4 heaviest, 8.66kg for 99 points, he only managed 3rd place. A couple of points ahead and in 2nd place was myself (Daniel Bell) with more species than Kiwi, but much less weight banking 105 points. Taking out 1st place, and the man of the match this month, was Joe Wettinger with 10 species, 4 heaviest, 7.42kg for 154 points. This really was a standout bag on a tough weekend mate - Well done!

So, back to what I mentioned earlier about the battle:

• After 7 comps Kiwi and I were only a couple of points apart on the Overall Men’s Champion leader board while Joe was about 50 points behind in 3rd place.

• After this month’s competition, Kiwi and I once again, are still only a few points apart BUT Joe has gained 50 points on us!

So, you guessed it… After 8 comps the top 3 positions in the Men’s category will only be a few points apart from one another. This is pretty amazing, given we all fish slightly different styles and tactics.

I very much look forward to the last 4 comps of the season and the continued battle for the top spot. Who will it be? Or will someone from further down the ladder have a few belters and be in the mix too… Only time will tell!

Our next competition is our annual South ‘away’ competition in Walpole on the 30th May–1st June with the weigh in held at Rest Point Caravan Park. The Angling section will provide nibbles and a sausage sizzle during and after the weigh in, so I hope to see you all there!

Beach Fishing Report –June 2025

The long-awaited Walpole away event for the season took place on Saturday, May 31st, and Sunday, June 1st. In true fashion for this season, the weather once again made things challenging for the 35 or so anglers who made the trip to compete. That said, the conditions down South were actually much better than in Perth, so I’m going to call that a win!

The combination of rain, swell, and almost no tidal movement all weekend made conditions tough. Not only were the rock ledges into deeper water unsafe to fish, but even the usually reliable sheltered beaches were slow. As a result, only 25 of the competitors ended up weighing in. That said, for our first comp held in Walpole, we still saw some solid bags. And from what I’ve heard, even the Fremantle club (who fish the area every year) didn’t have anything particularly exciting at their weigh-in either!

We had a combined 5 mini juniors and juniors fish which was great to see. Unfortunately, the Gauci girls (Jade and Taylor) didn’t manage to land a weighable fish. Young Taj Davis had a great weekend and after a few 2nd place finish’s this season, he managed to take out 1st place in this event with his bag of 2 species, 1 heaviest, 0.490kg for 27 points.

Interestingly, we saw a similar result in the Veterans category with Clive Powell. After a string of close second-place finishes in recent events, Clive came through with an impressive performance this time around landing 9 species, 5 heaviest, a total of 10.76kg, and 164 points, comfortably securing the win. His bag featured a great mix of inlet and ocean species, including the heaviest Wobbegong of the weekend and a solid 3.22kg Salmon. Clive, your consistency is truly impressive, and it was fantastic to see your ongoing effort finally rewarded. Something

tells me Ricko will be stepping things up in the next comp now that he’s been dethroned!

It was fantastic to see a strong turnout from our lady anglers at the weigh-in. Even one of our top boat anglers, Sally Gauci, gave beach fishing a go and impressed everyone by landing a podium finish in her very first comp! Her bag of 3 species earned her 3rd place, just behind Helen Brownfield in 2nd with 4 species. But the standout in the Ladies division was none other than the ‘Queen of the Beach’ herself, Bronwyn Gaston. She delivered an outstanding bag of 6 species, 5 heaviest, with a total weight of 2.38kg for 100 points. A highlight from her haul was a massive 1.066kg Wrasse – a true beast of a fish. Well done, Bronwyn!

Finally, on to the men’s results. As mentioned earlier, with the more open edges being unfishable, the competition became more of a battle of the species rather than the big fish. Joe Wettinger put together a similar mixed bag to his fishing buddy Clive, landing 8 species. Unfortunately, he didn’t manage to secure any heaviest fish to boost his points, but it was still enough to earn him a solid 3rd place finish.

Rob Walters, a skilled boat angler who’s been making a strong impression in the beach comps, claimed 2nd place with 7 species, 2 heaviest, a total weight of 8.19kg, and 115 points. A highlight of Rob’s bag was a nicely sized Gummy Shark, which, interestingly, came from the inlet. While these are often caught from boats in that area, this is the first one I’ve heard of being landed from the shore - a great achievement, well done!

And finally, first place went to me (Daniel Bell) with 11 species, 9 heaviest, a total weight of 14.88kg for 224 points. I’ll admit, having the most experience in that area definitely helped, and on a tough weekend like this one, it made a real difference. That said, I have no doubt next year will be a different story as our anglers are great at exploring new ground and putting the pieces together.

A few standouts from my bag included both a Wrasse and Blackfish weighing over 1kg, the only Tailor caught during the event (which believe it or not, was caught on a live herring that was actually intended for a Salmon!), a solid 3.85kg Salmon, and a Wobbegong that was just 1cm shy of Clive’s overall heaviest.

Another highlight of the weekend was the impressive number of quality Salmon caught by our members. Even more remarkable, though, was the wide variety of species brought in, showing how everyone got creative and thought outside the box to build their best bags despite the tough conditions. I hope everyone enjoyed getting a taste of the area and will be back next year for another shot. Here’s hoping for a bit less swell next time, so we can see some demersal fish making it to the scales!

I’d like to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone who helped make this event a success. A big thank you to the Gauci family for bringing down the scales, setting up the weigh-in area, assisting with the bookwork, and capturing some great photos throughout the event. A special shoutout to Helen Brownfield for doing a fantastic job on the sausage

sizzle – it was much appreciated! And of course, the usual legends Kiwi and Ricko for your ongoing support and assistance at the weigh-in. To anyone I may have missed, thank you as well. These events wouldn’t be possible without the help and support of you all!

Something I’ve mentioned before, but really want to highlight again, is the feedback from my good friend Mark, who I fished with over the weekend. Having been involved in multiple fishing clubs throughout his life, he was genuinely blown away by how well-run the event was and, more importantly, by how friendly, welcoming, and supportive our club members were. So a big well done to everyone, our club and section truly are something special, and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it.

Next comp is July 19th–20th and I’ll be praying it’s not a full-blown storm, as it often is that time of year. Hope to see you all there.

Cheers!

Daniel Bell

The Sailing Report

June 2025

The Sailing Section activities have resumed with the start of the Winter Series of 6 races commencing last Saturday, 6 June. Due to Skippers availability and the very light winds, 5 boats registered for the race, three of which had presented as solo entrants.

The race management committee met, prior to the race and a decision was made not to proceed due to safety concerns regarding only 2 boats having crew available to support an incident out on the water, if a rescue or call for help was to occur.

The skippers agreed and an informal race, with 3 boats, all with sufficient crew on board took place instead. The results of this race will not be recorded as per the ORSSC rules of racing, the minimum number of boats required to constitute a race was not met.

The previous weekend, the Sailing Section held our annual presentation evening, having had major disruptions to the 2024-25 season, which unfortunately was a direct result of the construction and closure of the ramps, presentation of trophies this year was a bit light as we were unable to award many of our annual awards including, the 3 race series trophies and the Championship Trophy due to the complications endured during 2024-25.

The evening, however, when very well with almost 50 attending, slightly down on last year but still a great event which and was, overall a success.

At the Sailing section meeting, Wednesday 11 June, the committee agreed to confirm that the Sailing section AGM as Thursday 10 July @7pm.

The sailing committee also agreed to a proposal from the floor to shift all future meetings to the 2nd Thursday of the month, instead of the 2nd Wednesday of the month to better accommodate attendance moving forward.

Out on the water at least three racing marks have been lost recently due to weather events, our Bosun has prepared replacements and plans are in place to drop the new marks into the water in time for the next race.

See you on the water,

June 2025 Report

Hello members,

In May the Power Boat section held a fish and chip run to the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. We had two boats launch at Matilda Bay in perfect conditions. Ron and Dora in their boat, and Ros and Peter in theirs accompanied by Graham and Jan. With the wind behind us we were ahead of schedule so anchors were dropped at Rocky Bay to discover Jan’s secret chocolate stash for morning tea. After pulling anchor we passed through Fremantle Harbour to receive a call from Bee and Peter that they were at Cicerello’s Fish Market and were saving us a place. After securing the boats we had beautiful fish and chips by the water before returning to our boats to sit and chat. The sailing back into the sun was a very warm 27 degrees and, with a dolphin launching itself out of the wake of a passing boat, we had everything. Amazingly there were only a few boats around so the waves were down and spots available wherever we stopped. A big thanks to everyone that turned up.

In June we held a river club visit going to the Swan Yacht Club. Unfortunately I picked up COVID on the way back from a diving trip so decided I shouldn’t attend. It’s one of those unfortunate communicable diseases you might catch when you’re bi-sectional.

With me out it was decided to be a drive to the event rather than a boat to the event. As it was we had 10 attend the Swan Yacht Club. Again the section beat the weather odds with a cloudy but dry day and from what I heard a great day was had by all.

Upcoming events include a river cruise from Maylands to Woodbridge House in Guildford for lunch on Saturday 12 July, and a barbeque boat run from Maylands to Shelley Beach on the Canning River on Sunday 10 August. If anyone is interested in attending any of these events, just send an email to powerboat@orssc.asn.au and I’d be pleased to let you know the details and include you.

Happy boating!

Summary

From thrilling Bocce battles under the sun to unforgettable underwater diving off Rottnest, and diving with majestic Thresher Sharks in the Philippines, the past few months have been a whirlwind of excitement and camaraderie. The annual Bocce Competition saw Team Viking claim victory, while divers explored the depths of Rottnest and Malapascua Island, renowned for its stunning marine life and vibrant community. As the season winds down, the End of Season Dinner promises a nostalgic 80s celebration, complete with live music, wine tasting, and prizes. The future of travel and adventure is bright, filled with exhilarating experiences and unforgettable memories.

Bocce Competition:

A Day of Sun and Rivalry

On the 12th of April, under a beautiful sunny afternoon, the annual Bocce Competition took place, bringing together 16 enthusiastic players forming 8 competitive teams. This hotly contested event was not just about the game; it was about

bragging rights for a full year. As the competition tightened over the next few hours, teams were knocked out one by one, leading to an intense final match. Erick and Garry faced off against Karrie and Iain in a nail-biting contest. In the end, Team Viking emerged victorious, taking home the prestigious trophy. The day concluded with a delightful sausage sizzle and a few ales, celebrating the spirit of friendly rivalry and camaraderie.

May Dive: Exploring the Depths of Rottnest

The dive section had their sights set on a planned boat dive to Rottnest in May. Despite the weather

not being favourable on the weekends, a few boats finally set out at the beginning of June. Among the divers was a newly certified diver, Micà, who experienced her first boat dive and handled the conditions magnificently. The diving conditions were a little challenging, with average visibility and a strong surge, resulting in the hunt for crayfish to be a challenge for some. Nevertheless, a modest catch was made, and the divers enjoyed a great morning. The adventure was topped off with a quick trip to Mindarie for a coffee before heading back to Ocean Reef Marina.

Malapascua Island, Philippines: Diving with Thresher Sharks

As the weather cooled and water temperatures dropped in Perth, it was time for an overseas escape. In late June, the dive section headed to the Philippines, specifically Malapascua Island, known for its Thresher Sharks.

Malapascua Island, located in the Visayan Sea near Cebu, is a diver's paradise. The island is renowned for its incredible scuba diving sites, including coral gardens, walls, and shoals where thresher sharks, manta rays, and hammerheads can be seen. The island's most famous dive spot, Monad Shoal, is an underwater plateau where thresher sharks are regularly sighted. Besides diving, Malapascua offers stunning beaches, island hopping tours, and a rich cultural experience with its friendly locals and vibrant community.

The journey was long, involving flights to Singapore and Cebu, followed by a ferry ride to the island. Upon arrival, everyone settled into the Exotic Resort, ready for seven days of diving. As this goes to print a few of the dive crew have returned to Perth with thrilling stories of diving with Thresher Sharks, enjoying the island's entertainment, and mingling with fellow divers and locals. A full report on this adventure is eagerly awaited in the next Tide

End

of Season Dinner: A Nostalgic 80s Celebration

The planning for the End of Season Dinner on the 5th of July is well underway, promising an unforgettable evening with an 80s theme. Guests are encouraged to bring out their loud colours, jumpsuits, and mullets for a night of fun and nostalgia. The event will feature a live band, wine tasting, and a few odd games, with prizes up for grabs. It’s set to be a night filled with dancing, reminiscing, and celebrating the vibrant spirit of the 80s.

The Poker Report

ORSSC Club Poker

As some members are aware, ORSSC hosts Texas Holdem Poker every Tuesday night down in the Dining hall at the club.

The game started as a social gathering over 20 years ago by a few members who thought it would be a bit of fun and a great social event each week and has now evolved into a social tournament enjoyed weekly by members.

The structure is tournament poker, NOT Cash Poker –the difference being all you pay is an entry fee to join in and you are not constantly purchasing chips and gambling away your hard earned cash.

The number of winning places paid will depend on the number of tournament entries e.g., 1 Table (8 players) only 1st place, 2 Tables 1st and 2nd, 3 Tables 1st, 2nd and 3rd etc.

We play our tournaments in seasons usually between 20–30 weeks and we then play a grand final game with the prize pool being accumulative throughout the season.

All players in the Grand Final must have played a predetermined number of weekly tournaments to qualify for entry into the GF (conditions apply).

Tournaments currently run every Tuesday night from 7pm until 11.30pm.

Registration from 6pm until 6.45 pm.

If running late, phone or text Joe 0403 601 160. No late entries can be accepted

Not a member?

To attend the club and participate in any club activity on a frequent basis you must be a member and poker is open to all financial members.

If you are not a member you can attend and play 2 tournaments, and you must be signed in by a member each time.

If you wish to continue playing you can join either as a full member or as an associate sports member to only participate in poker events (conditions apply).

Congratulations to all our weekly winners.

Congratulations to Derek K for winning $100 bar voucher for the most kills in Season 1.

To end season 1 we played or season Grand Final on Saturday 28th June we had 32 players Qualify with the required 10 games but unfortunately only 27 were available to compete.

The game commenced at 1.30pm and all players were primed and ready for the long haul, the standard of poker played was to a professional level with our first player being eliminated after

nearly 4 hrs of play and picking up the NAPPA trophy , after which a steady flow of players were eliminated until we reached our final table at around 8pm with Ash being the unlucky 9th position winning him the wooden spoon trophy. The remaining 8 players battled it out for our Season 1 Colin Bird Memorial Champion trophy until 11pm with the placings as follows: 8th place, Derek K; 7th place, Paul H; 6th place, Lucinda J; 5th place, Andrew F; 4th place, Rob Weale; 3rd place, Joe W; 2nd place, Tony Mc; and our champion, Tony H.

Congratulations Tony and to all who made the final table.

A big thank you to all the players who competed on the day playing a very high standard of poker which was reflected by the longevity of the game.

I would also like to thank all the players who participated throughout the season, for their support and for their help to build the numbers each week.

Season 2 starts Tuesday 1st July – all are welcome.

New marine rescue and ORSSC buildings progressing towards 2025 completion

In mid-June, members of the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club (ORSSC) and Marine Rescue Whitfords (MRW) enjoyed an exclusive preview of progress on their new, purpose-built facilities. The ground floor of the MRW building will accommodate the future Marina Manager, while the first floor will be home to MRW volunteers.

Construction is tracking well, with key activities underway across both buildings, including tiling, cladding, window and door installation, and internal fit outs. The new MRW essential telecommunications mast is now in place, and as scaffolding is progressively removed in the coming weeks, the distinctive architectural form of the buildings is starting to take shape.

With builder Byte at the helm, construction is progressing towards delivering a modern, purpose-built hub for Ocean Reef’s sea-loving community, with the ORSSC and MRW buildings sitting side-by-side in the southern marina precinct overlooking the future beach, coastal pool and extensive public open space. Take a look below at the works happening on each building.

Continuing the Club’s legacy in a new home

The new club facility is set to offer a renewed, lively atmosphere with expanded dining choices and a welcoming bar environment. Members can look forward to making the most of their favourite on-water pastimes — from fishing and diving to sailing — with upgraded facilities designed to suit all interests and experience levels.

The new club facility has also been thoughtfully designed to support local groups such as the Joondalup City RSL, highlighting its role as a hub for community connection.

Positioned in the heart of the Marine Enterprise Precinct, it will provide easy access to the new boat ramps, future boat pens and trailer parking — all while taking in sweeping views of the coastline and nearby parklands.
