Graham Hindley
G’Day Members,
I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break. On behalf of the Committee and all staff, I’d like to wish you a safe and Happy 2025! This year is set to be an exciting one for the club, with significant progress being made on the marina development. As parts of the project near completion, we’ll get a clearer picture of the incredible facility we’ll soon be enjoying.
I’d like to take a moment to thank our growing membership base for your continued patience and understanding during this period of change. We know the ongoing works have caused some inconvenience, and we’re not unsympathetic to the challenges they present. Please know that all decisions are made with the club’s best interests at heart, and we’re always open to hearing suggestions that could enhance everyone’s experience.
Over the Christmas holidays, we hosted several well-received events that were well attended by members and guests. These included the Christmas Buffet (despite a power outage causing a slight delay), a visit from Father Christmas at the Children’s Party, and the NYE Beach Party, which was a huge success. However, we did encounter
some issues with unsupervised children. Please remember that all children must be under the constant supervision of a parent or responsible adult, as per the Liquor Act. Non-compliance may result in being asked to leave the premises, as we must adhere to these regulations to maintain our liquor license. Your cooperation helps ensure everyone can enjoy their time at the club.
For updates on the marina development, we’ve installed a noticeboard on the wall as you head down the stairs into the patio area. This board will keep you informed about the latest developments and timelines, so please check it regularly as we move into the exciting stages of construction.
The relocation of boats to the new southern boat storage facility is now complete. While there have been some minor teething issues, the facility is a significant upgrade, and feedback has been very positive. I’d like to extend my gratitude to the Marina Sub-Committee for their hard work behind the scenes, particularly Ex-Commodore Ken Wood, who stepped down as Chairman at the end of last year but continues to contribute. Elliott Broadhurst is now assisting in leading the committee.
With summer in full swing, keep an eye on the noticeboards around the club for upcoming events and make the most of what’s on offer. Your support means a lot to us, and we look forward to seeing you at the club.
That’s all from me at the moment. As always, stay safe out on the water and at the club be courteous to other members and staff so we can all have a pleasurable experience.
Commodore
We would like to extend our sincere apologies for an error in the spelling of our Patron and his wife's name in the Oct-Dec issue of TIDE. We deeply regret this mistake and wish to formally apologise to Ian and Jill Younghusband for any upset caused.
To correct this, we would like to restate the original message with the proper spelling:
“A special mention to our Patron, Ian Younghusband, and his always supportive wife, Jill, for Ian’s many years of service to the club. Ian was one of our founding members and has played a huge role in getting us to where we are today. The honour of Patron has now been passed on to Phil Gallagher, who has also been a tremendous asset to the club, serving in various management positions and continuing to watch over us as a Trustee.”
Once again, we apologise for the oversight and thank Ian and Jill for their incredible contributions and support to the club.

Exciting progress is underway for the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club’s spectacular new home, set to open in late 2025. Throughout 2024, the vision came to life with major milestones reached – ground slabs poured, and ground floor precast walls lifted into place. With the expertise of builder Byte Construct, both the Club and Marine Rescue Whitfords are witnessing their future take shape, promising a vibrant new hub for the Ocean Reef community.
As the transformation gains momentum, it’s worth reflecting on the progress made so far. Construction kicked off in August 2024, when Byte Construct mobilised onsite. For context, the Club will occupy the northern corner of the site, as shown in the render below, with Marine Rescue Whitfords right next door.
In late 2024, members of the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and Marine Rescue Whitfords Committee were treated to a behindthe-scenes tour, witnessing their future homes coming to life.
Before Christmas, the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club building had already taken shape with the concrete panel walls lifted into position and the first floor slab poured. Internal masonry walls had commenced, and the concrete stairs were set in place – marking key milestones in the journey. Now, with the New Year underway, the momentum continues. Structural steel is to be installed on the first floor, followed by roofing and external stud walls bringing the vision ever closer to reality. Internal services are being installed throughout the ground floor.
The new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club (ORSSC) is set to become a vibrant, two-storey hub designed to cater to every need, blending functionality with coastal charm.
On the ground floor, visitors can look forward to enjoying a lively restaurant and bar, a handy kiosk with outdoor service, and spacious showers and change rooms. There’ll even be a dedicated office for club staff and a wet store for all the essential gear. Outside, beautifully landscaped gardens, alfresco areas, and play spaces will spread across 1,400sqm, creating a welcoming environment for relaxation and fun.
Taking shape along Perth’s northern shores, Ocean Reef Marina will seamlessly blend world-class amenities with the natural beauty of Western Australia’s coastline. This distinctive waterfront precinct will become a thriving hub for recreation and leisure in Perth’s northern corridor.
Picture yourself strolling along the waterfront promenade, lined with cafes and restaurants overlooking sunlit terraces. Dine by the water’s edge after doing some laps in Perth’s first coastal pool – a stunning 50-metre, eight lane facility that may host everything from casual laps to competitive water polo sports matches.
This transformative development brings together more than 1,000 residential dwellings, from waterfront apartments to family homes, accompanied by 12,000 square metres of vibrant retail, hospitality and commercial spaces. More than five hectares of community spaces, will invite exploration, relaxation and connection with nature.
This year marks exciting milestones at Ocean Reef Marina, with the launch of the first residential lots for sale, alongside the opening of the new ORSSC and Marine Rescue Whitfords buildings. Construction will begin on the first stage of boat pens, while work wraps up on the family beach and central parkland, set to open in late 2026.

Well, the weather turned it on for our annual kids’ competition, slight easterlies in the morning and absolute zero swell meant for very calm seas. This attracted a very good turnout with 33 kids across the three age divisions signing up for the mornings fishing. And boy, did the fish also turn up for the occasion. Eleven out of the 12 species were ticked off the list for this – great effort.
During the weigh-in, plenty of good size herring, whiting and trevally were in majority of the bags. Also dominating during the weigh-in was wrasse and trumpeter that had proved easy enough for the kids to target as some of the select species. Amongst some of the bigger species to be caught was a very decent sized flathead from Mini Junior Harvey Thompson at 652 grams – absolute belter mate. A species that did surprise me to see so many coming in over the scales was one of my personal favourite fish to catch/eat, the King George Whiting. Young Junior Rory Stubberfeild landing the biggest KG at 715grams! If I was to pick a fish of the day, then this one by Rory was it. Great catch, buddy.
Whilst the crew up front concluded the weigh in results. Troy Clugston, our now official Fish Throw Captain, had all the contestants participate in the 2024 Fish Throw event. The kids all love this little in-house throw event, as it lets them blow off energy.
On to our overall results for the comp. The Super Mini Junior runner up was Alisa Okeefe, with 4 species and 62 points. In first was Catalyn Silk with 6 species and 71 points. Mini Juniors was and is normally our biggest contested age category. In second with 6 species, 85 points was Lucy Weymouth. Taking out first in the Mini Juniors was Harvey Thompson with 7 species and 90 points. On
to the Juniors, and in second was Cruze Marsden, 4 species and 58 points. In first with 7 species and a whopping 105 points was Jade Gaucci.
Well done to all those above who picked up a prize for their overall efforts on the day. We also had 9 species winners and 6 “Fish Throw” winners who also took home a prize. Those who did not get up on the podium did not go home empty handed. Thanks to Robbie at Getaway Tackle Balcatta! Robbie was able to hook all contestants up with a little Shimano show bag that had plenty of goodies inside. Robbie you legend, thank you very much once again. Getaway Balcatta are very generous to support this annual event. Would also like to thank Kiwi on the BBQ, keeping all the kids fed and not giving anyone food poisoning. Mumma Marree on the camera, thank you again. Dan Bell, Drew helping with the book work, Robbie helping bring the fish over the scales, Fish Throw Captain Troy Clugston. My wife Sarah for getting all the trophies, kids drinks and ice poles sorted – thank you all so much to help make this happen for our club.
Thanks to all the mums and dads for getting the kids involved. It helps the grass roots grow stronger and make our family club an even better place to be involved with.
See you all next year for the 2025 Kids fishing Comp and Fish Throw Event.

The Sailing Section has had a rocky start to the 2024-25 season, which unfortunately has been a direct result of the construction.
In previous years the sailing section has always had boats out for the club’s opening day sail past, where we kick off the season with the Rear Commodores Cup. Sadly, this year the sailing section was unable to participate.
We did, however, manage to complete our Winter Series of sailing and although with reduced numbers, it was good to be out on the water, albeit for a short time before sailing was again severely impacted by the construction works forcing the cancellation of the Spring Series of racing.
The closure of 4 ramps at the marina has made it difficult for sail boats to launch and impossible for the deeper keel boats due to the loss of ramp 8 (the deep water ramp).
Not only have we, along with every other boat owner, had to deal with only having 4 ramps available, maintenance on the remaining 4 ramps has been neglected, resulting in pot holes, excessive silt and sea weed build up.
More recently, with the closure of the road leading from the clubs original hard stands, sailing for all members became practically impossible as the power lines across the ramp access road blocked our access to launch.
Fortunately, now we have the new club hard stand, sailing can begin to recover and in mid-January, we managed to get 4 boats out for the Alkimos Long Race, participation was a shadow of former years, however with new hard stand and the new ramps being made available sometime in March, fingers crossed, we are hoping members can again fully enjoy being out on the water.
On dry land, we had our Christmas party in midDecember, which saw great company and a good time. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us.
Looking forward, the Sailing Section has provisionally planned the summer series of racing for March, we hope to rebuild and recover the growth in participation we saw in the last couple of years and look forward to completion of the new ramps and club building.
See you on the water,
Andy Hodkinson Rear Commodore, Sailing

Hello members,
Summer is well and truly upon us and the Power Boat section has had many events since the last Tide. A big thank you to all the active members of the section who keep this alive and keep smiles on their faces.
September saw the section head off for a camp at Ron and Dora’s farm near Guilderton. Some members brought caravans and others brought swags. The lucky couple, Laurie and Helen, grabbed the built-in bedroom in the world’s largest shed for a peaceful sleep. On arrival we dumped our gear and set up accommodation before heading off to the Guilderton Sports Club for a lovely lunch. After
that we headed back and engaged hubs to head out to the dam for the annual mini America’s Cup race. Then it was time for the bonfire and an evening under the stars (and satellites) until bedtime. A big thank you to Ron, Dora and the 200 goats who stared us down for a fantastic weekend away.
October saw the section head off for the Mandoon Winery cruise. We were blessed with perfect clear skies and the temperature in the mid-twenties. Four boats headed off from Maylands at a leisurely 5 knots to meet up with others who reserved some tables for us. Fortunately Steve Haywood brought his tinny and the remainder of us dropped our passengers on the jetty and then tied up to his boat. After a lunch of pizzas it was time to head back. This might was challenging as the ferry was right across the jetty, but with a bit of ingenuity we had Steve ferry the passengers from a small ledge left on the jetty to the other boats sitting in the middle of the river.
November saw the Power Boat section join in with the Dive section for a weekend at Pt Peron. This is a weekend not to miss as the accommodation is quirky and the atmosphere fantastic. There is another weekend planned at the Alfred Hines Seaside Camp on 14 – 16 March, so bring your boats, squidding gear and bathers for a cheap and fun weekend away.
December saw the section hold its annual Christmas party which was held at Ron and Dora’s house at the back of Wanneroo. We had a great turnout and some members brought caravans to stay the night and share breakfast the next day. The Kris Kringle gift giving (with stealing) was a hoot with Daz unfortunately getting his half naked Tradies calendar stolen by Andrea who has hung it in her van.
We still have many events booked for the year and here’s a summary:
• 1–3 March – long weekend stay at Cockburn Power Boat Association
• 14–16 March – Point Peron weekend with Divers
• 18–21 April – Jurien Bay Easter weekend
If anyone is interested in attending any of these events, just send an email to powerboat@orssc.asn.au and I’d be pleased to let you know the details and include you.
Happy boating

Summary
The last few months of the year came very quickly as we rushed headlong into Christmas. The weather got warmer the crays came in droves just in time to fill the freezers for Christmas. The dive section had a busy schedule with dives, weekends away and the always exciting and entertaining Dive Christmas Party.
As we head into the new year there are some great activities being planned for the first half of the year. The Dive section will be heading to Busselton in February to participate in the Shelter Scuba Scavenger Hunt dive at Busselton Jetty. In March we have the Cray Day competition where we compete with Hillary’s Yacht Club and MAAC dive sections for bragging rights for the best catch of crayfish. Later in March we head to Point Peron for a weekend away. Planning for the annual international dive is in its final stages as the Dive Section heads to the Philippines to dive with the thrasher sharks.
It has been great welcoming all the new members to the section and seeing them join in the activities. If you want to join the section or be involved in any of the activities please get in contact with me.

The season started in October with a shore dive at the Ammo Jetty at Woodman Point, Coogee. This was an opportunity to get the dive gear out of storage, for some, and clear the cobwebs out on a nice easy dive. Unfortunately many of us found out that our wetsuits had shrunk over the winter period and stretching them back out took some effort. It was a beautiful day with great conditions for a diving. Starting nice and early was a great plan as by the time the dive finished a lot of divers had arrived and started stirring up the seadbed. Plenty of sea life around with some great photos taken including seahorses, schools of fish and a lone blue swimmer crab. After the dive everyone enjoyed a well-earned BBQ breakfast.
Moving to November, the Dive section had a weekend away at Point Peron. Once everyone was settled into their rooms it was time to sit back enjoy an afternoon drink and admire the view. Friday night everyone made their way down the foreshore for dinner at Latitude 32. It was a great night with fantastic food, flowing drinks and great company. Over a few ales the decision of where to dive was made. The weather was looking excellent and there was a number of good options to choose from. Saturday morning the divers headed to Cape Peron for a shore dive. Conditions were perfect, the sea was calm with good visibility and plenty of sea life around. Everyone headed out and to the right along the reef taking in the sea life and the beauty of the reef. After the dive the coffee van in the carpark was kept busy as everyone enjoyed
a coffee and breakfast. A quick inspection by fisheries to ensure that we did not have an illegal catch and we were off back to camp. The afternoon was spent on the beach with the adults and kids alike enjoying themselves. There was some poor attempts at paddle boarding, sandcastle building and swimming. As the wind picked up in the afternoon the dive cylinders made an excellent weights to hold the gazebo down. The late afternoon everyone joined in for a game of cricket. The ball was flying down the pitch, bats were swinging harder than a rusty gate, and desperate catches were attempted to the laughter of everyone. A BBQ dinner in the camp rounded off a very enjoyable day. Sunday everyone pitched in leaving the camp in spotless condition before hitting the road home. A massive thank you to Jan for organising the weekend.
The Dive Section Christmas party is always a highlight in the Dive calendar with the infamous Kris Kringle. Everyone descended on the Hawker residence ready for a great evening of fun dressed in their finest Christmas outfit. Before long the banquet of food was laid out and everyone enjoyed a great variety of food that everyone had brought. It was time now to do the Kris Kringle and everyone gathered round in anticipation. Who was going to get the perennial, infamous picture frame? Who will be its custodian for a year and have it proudly displayed front and centre in their home? As each individual was called up there was a decision to make: open a present or steal someone else? Prime presents were hidden in the hope no one would remember it existed, other tried to give their presents away with the hope of another go. Finally all the presents were accounted for but the picture frame had not made an appearance. What happened? A smile broke out from the prior custodian as they suggested that gifts should be opened a little more thoroughly. Faces dropped and yep buried in one of the presents was the picture frame proudly presented by the new custodian much to the laughter of all. A brilliant night was enjoyed by all. A special thank you to Peter and Ros Hawker for their great hospitality and helping create a memorable night.
In December a number of members with boats joined forces for a group dive and a raft up. It was a hot day but there was a bit of a swell that claimed one of the crew. Everyone headed out and before long we were at the first dive site. The hunt was on for a feed of fish and crayfish to be cooked up for lunch. Once at the bottom the visibility was ok but a little stirred up from the surge. The hunting prowess of the group was dented with only a few crayfish in the catch bag. Mark came up with an unexpected haul of cray loops and spearguns that were on the seabed. Off we went back closer to shore for the second dive, maybe we would be more successful here. Again the visibility and surge made it hard to fill the catch bags and we returned back to the boats with a limited catch. Despite the result it is always good getting into the water. Back to the Ocean Reef harbour where the non-divers were picked up before everyone tied up for lunch and a swim. The cray loops and spearguns were returned to the very grateful owner. Luckily we were not relying on the catch to feed everyone but we all enjoyed the crayfish we did catch. Thanks Dave for organising and co-ordinating the day.

Highlights
• The Bluewater Darts Association Tuesday night competition is halfway through the season. All ORSSC teams are very competitive and its going to be tight race to who secure final spots which will kick off mid-April. Come down for a beverage, socialising and some highquality darts on show.
• We have had two new teams explode into the competition, ORSSC Platinum to boast dominance of the number of our teams in A grade and ORSSC Copper in C grade. It’s awesome to see another C grade team getting new darts players involved.
• ORRSC White in B2 Grade now has 4 players in the elite 180 club. Congratulations to Terry Bell, Nick Wilkie, Brad Kull & Gary Bell. Not bad for team which started in C Grade two years ago. I aim to join this club by the end of this season.
• The Bluewater Darts competition is all about getting involved, socialising, having fund and sometimes it’s not always about getting the trophies.
• Recruitment Drive for Winter will be starting in Mar25 when we begin to register teams for the next season which will commence around May-25. You don’t need to commit every week as teams consist of around 10 and only 6 players make up a playing team for the night. Games are every Tuesday nights starting at 7.30pm sharp and finish around 9-9.30pm with supper after. Venues are only sports clubs (i.e. MAAC, Quinns, Sorrento, Wanneroo).
• It would be great to get even more ORSSC teams on board especially with the move to our new club. Currently we have been told we will have 5 boards in the Masons room, but more players mean more potential darts boards, more fun and some perhaps some major competitions held there. Please check out the notice board in the Masons bar for information.
• Friday evenings & Sunday afternoons are social fun days to align to the 100 club and meat raffles. Turn up and have some fun – all abilities welcome.

As some members are aware ORSSC hosts Texas Holdém Poker every Tuesday night down in the Dining hall at the club.
The game started as a social gathering over 20 years ago by a few members who thought it would be a bit of fun and a great social event each week and has now evolved into a social tournament enjoyed weekly by members.
The structure is tournament poker NOT Cash Poker the difference being all you pay is an entry fee to join in and you are not constantly purchasing chips and gambling away your hard-earned cash.
To enter a tournament, you pay $30, and you are issued with 30000 in playing chips you then take your seat at the table and play until you run out of chips. As players run out of chips they are eliminated from the tournament and cannot re-buy or purchase any more chips to continue in the tournament. As the number of players reduces the numbers of tables are reduced accordingly until there is only one person left and they are declared the winner.
The number of winning places paid will depend on the number of tournament entries eg.1 x Table (8 players per table max) only 1st place, 2 Tables 1st & 2nd ,3 tables 1st 2nd & 3rd etc.
We play our tournaments in seasons usually between 20 – 30 weeks and we then play a grand final game with the prize pool being accumulative throughout the season.
The $30 entry fee paid each week if broken down as follows $20 goes to the nightly prize pool and $10 is put aside for the Grand final prize pool
All entry fees for these poker tournaments received, are paid out to the participants either weekly or at the Grand Final.
All players in the Grand final must have played a predetermined number of weekly tournaments to Qualify for entry into the GF. (Conditions apply)
Tournaments currently run every Tuesday night from 7pm until 11.30pm.
Registration from 6pm until 6.45pm.
If running late, phone or text Joe 0403 601 160.
No late entries can be accepted.
Dont know how to play?
We are looking at introducing a free league table/ table to teach members the art of playing Texas Holdém and when you are confident you can join in the tournament if desired.
This will be subject to demand so to express your interest please contact Joe 0403 601 160 or Phil 0438 771 544.
Not a member?
To attend the club and participate in any club activity on a frequent basis you must be a member and poker is open to all financial members.
If you are not a member you can attend and play 2 tournaments and must be signed in by a member each time.
If you wish to continue playing you can join either as a full member or as an associate sports member to only participate in poker events (conditions apply)
