APR-JUN 2025 FEAT. REPORTS FOR Angling, Sailing, Power Boating, Diving, Darts and Poker

From the Commodore

G’Day Members,

As Summer transitions into Autumn, we have been fortunate to be blessed with some exceptional weather during the last few weeks and what better way to spend it than at the Club enjoying a beverage and the beautiful views (once you see past the Construction Site).

Our Sunday Sessions with DJ Selina have now wrapped up, and we want to thank her for bringing a fantastic vibe to our sunny Sundays. Moving forward, we’ll be returning to a mix of solo and duo performers, including some familiar faces and a few new ones to keep things fresh.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new members who have joined over the past few months! Our membership continues to grow as we prepare for the next phase of ORSSC. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to read through the Club’s Constitution, House Rules, and By-laws. These will give you a great insight into how the Club operates and help you make the most of your membership. And don’t be shy—whether it’s a fellow member, a committee representative, or our

staff, there’s always someone happy to answer questions or point you in the right direction. Remember, being a member gives you access to all our sections, where there’s a wealth of knowledge and experience waiting to be shared—just get involved!

The new building is coming along well, as you can see from the back of the Club. Regular updates are posted on the notice board in the patio area, so be sure to check in. Over the next few weeks, the roof and windows will be installed, making the structure weatherproof before winter sets in. Keep an eye on our newsletters, social media and notice board as we’ll continue to share updates—things are changing rapidly!

Meanwhile, our Hardstand is taking shape, with more boats being accommodated as work progresses. The final water and power towers will be coming online soon, along with new security cameras, ensuring this remains a valuable asset for the Club for many years to come.

June will mark some important milestones, as we celebrate two of our dedicated staff members— Chef Paula, who has been with us for an incredible 18 years, and Lynda in the office, who is reaching 13 years of service. A huge thank you to both of these wonderful ladies for their ongoing commitment to keeping ORSSC running smoothly!

As I sign off for this edition just my customary reminder to be courteous to other club members, staff at the club and of course our management committee who are all volunteers that give up a lot of their valuable time.

Please be reminded to show respect for our building, its contents, and the people who work and spend time here. We have seen a concerning rise in incidents involving children damaging club property and displaying disrespectful behaviour toward staff, members, and the premises.

This is unacceptable. Any families whose children are found damaging or disrespecting club property will be asked to leave the grounds immediately.

Our building may be old, but it continues to serve us until we transition to our new facilities. It is not a playground and children are to be supervised at all time by their parent and or legal guardian as per the Liquor Act. We expect all members and their guests to treat it with the care it deserves.

I always have time to chat to members especially about diving so stop me for a yarn, but in the meantime be safe out there, whether you are on, in, or by the water.

The Angling Report

January Boat Comp

Just a quick word before I get this one started. I deliberately did not put the reports in for the prior TIDE magazine. As discussed with Mel, we wanted to focus on the big end of year annual kids comp and I think it was a good decision with the feedback we received. And I would not have had anything to put into this TIDE as we have had the last two months off due to our demersal closure/ calender schedule.

Now onto the first boat comp for the year. Always at the peril of the weather gods and the forecast was looking fantastic. No swell, easterlys all morning and then swinging south west in the afternoon. The decent forecast seen a good show with 11 boats getting involved, 23 signing on and 20 anglers weighing. It was great to see on the actual day the weather man had gotten his forecast spot on!

The fishing was on fire. Out of the 21 target species on our boat list, between all anglers we managed to tick off 18! Very impressive effort and it would be interesting to know if we have ever been this close to “sweeping” the species board before? The elusive species not weighed in for the day included Mulloway, Shark and Tuna – Elliot Tunahurst letting the team down on the last one.

We had some very nice harlequin caught and “Dunnybudgie” Drew Elliman landing the biggest for the day at 797grams – RIP buddy. Solid Breaksea cod from Chris “doesn’t catch breadnbutter fish” Graves at 1.939kg. Wouldn’t believe but beach fisho Kiwi nabbed the biggest tailor for the comp at 383grams – man did we hear about it aye! We have been seeing better sized

dhu’s coming in over the scales lately – possibly the demersal closures is helping? My second favourite vet Graham Coles dhufish of 9.5kg was a very solid one from our local waters, good fish mate.

We had no grommets fish this comp unfortunately, very possible the parents may have needed some respite during the school holidays.

We had two vets up on the podium. Vince Cox, loves an almond latte. Vincey had 4 species, 3 heaviest, 1.293kg and 60.6 points to come in second. Colesy Up in first with 4 species, 4 heaviest, 11.6kg and 87.2 points. Well done fellas.

The ladies where out in force for this one, but there is only only enough room on the podium for 3. In third with 4 species, 2 heaviest, 938 grams and 53.9 points was Samantha Tunhurst.

Second on the podium with 7 species, 3 heaviest, 7.721kg and 103.4 points was Sally Gauci. Just pipping Sal by 3 points was Belinda Mallon! Bel had 6 species, 5 heaviest, 8.471kg and 106.7 points. Great job ladies and once again belting the boys with some of them bags weighed in.

Onto Boys and it was an all shoot out up the top with only 10 points separating the top 3.

Rob “Chucky” Walters in third with 8 species, 2 heaviest, 10.627kg and 113.3 points. Now the next fella is in very unfamiliar territory- normally only manages to scrap together 3-4 species at most. Troy Clugston, yes I am not joking! Troy came in second with a very solid bag of 9 species, 2 heaviest, 8.572kg and 119.1points. The fishing lessons the prior comp from Tezza Bell has paid

dividends. Terry I am sure Troy’s wife would pay a fortune on how you manged to get him to listen to you. Onto our winner for the boys and with another decent bag was my freaking deckie again Ryan “Red” Ferguson. Red had 8 specie, 2 heaviest, 15.523kg and 123 points. Some very good bags boys.

Thanks once again for organizing the sausage sizzle, all that helped with the weigh and all our sponsors for the all the species prizes.

Next Boat comp is the Australia Day weekend.

Catch you all then.

Buckets out.

Febuary Boat Comp

Australia Day long weekend and what a better way to spend it fishing in our backyard. The weather man predicted light westerly winds and he was spot on. The swell did increase during the day but it was a great weather out on the water. Water temps were above average touching 25 degrees. T-Roy and crew got the trolling gear out on the inshore reefs and had a belta session on the elusive metro mackerel. The lads on board boated 6 plus Spanish mackerel! A few decent dhus weighed in again and Corey Leightons 10.26kg specimen took the chocolates for the biggest of the day. Cory wrangled this metro silver slab in on his jet ski! Awesome effort.Sean Nichols landed the first Yellow Tail King in for the year, be good if these guys started popping their heads up more frequently.

Onto our results and we had the one lone soldier Ashton Marsden in the mini juniors. Ashton had a very solid bag, belted pop actually. 5 species, 5 heaviest, 0.981kg and 82 points. Ashton also has a record pending box fish!

The vets had a great show but there is only enough room for 3 up on the podium. Vince Cox in 3rd with 1 specie, 1 heaviest, 0.134kg and 16.3points. Colesy in second with 2 species, 1 heaviest, 0.308kg and 26.6points. Terry Bell fishing on the T-Roy’s boat- AKA Mackeral.com coming in first. Terry had 6 species including first metro Mackie, 5 heaviest, 5.501kg and 101 points.

The ladies seen two of the finest go toe to toe. In second was Samatha Spewy Tunahurst. Sam had 4 species, 1 heaviest, 0.794kg and 47.6 points- well done sticking it out whilst feeling so crook! In first was Sal Gaucci with 6 species, 6 heaviest, 1.389kh and 98.8 points.

Into the men’s/boys and in 3rd position, struggling with Xmas hangover still was Buckets. BCB had 8 species, 3.383kg and 86.8 points. In second spot was a fella who has been hiding in the closet, beautiful chompers on him- Andy Whitehouse.Andy had a solid bag with 6 species, 3 heaviest, 5.494 kg and 89 points. In First again with a very good bag of fish was Ryan Red Ferguson. Red had 10 species, 4 heaviest, 7.322kg and 138.6points. I like it when Red wins as he smiles and buys me beer.

Thanks to all again who help with the weigh do your thing and bbq chef Silvio. We now have two months on the bench during the demersal closure and will be back in April when the pink snapper will be firing.

Take care everyone.

Buckets out.

Beach Fishing Report –November 2024

Here we go again! Round 2 for our 2024/25 season!

The November competition is arguable the one I look forward to the most. It’s the month where the local fishing (especially in the Swan River) really starts to fire up and fishing with a 6 year old is easy… well almost! There is always the “Dad I need to poo RIGHT NOW” while we are a million miles from anywhere you’re able to go to the toilet, another snapped rod tip and a thousand tangled lines, but at least the actual fishing part proved to be on point. Sadly in this competition we didn’t get the highest number of competitors with only 14 people weighing in. This being said we did see some very good bags in terms of species count.

With the weather forecast looking quite unfavourable for Saturday night a number of the competitors decided to stay local or just switch up there usual fishing plans which resulted in some quite different bags this month. Again, we saw lots of KG Whiting weighed in which I absolutely love to see! Believe it or not 9 of the 14 competitors had one in their bag, whereas years ago we would only be lucky enough to see 1 or 2 caught in an entire beach season and now there is high multiples every comp. The KG Whiting this month were caught from far and wide too; from the river, Freo, Lancelin and even as far north as Grey. Terry Bell managed to snag the heaviest at a weight of 0.336kg and I was lucky enough to catch 3 size KG Whiting for the weekend but trumping me, Ricko caught an impressive 4! I don’t know what has changed with these fish but I’m not unhappy about it as they are an always a welcome addition to the bag.

Crew Bell and myself mainly fished the river and Freo area to avoid the wind and while not having a lot of weight we did catch a really good number of

species, which was enough for us to take out both the Mini Juniors and Men’s categories respectively. While nothing outstanding in our bags I did manage the whiting trifecta weighing in normal Whiting, Yellowfin and KG Whiting. Crew was close to this too, but couldn’t get his hands on what he likes to call a Kingie (KG Whiting).

As always the veterans category was hard fought and believe it or not we actually had more veterans than men weigh in this time! Terry Bell had the opposite luck to his last comp with this time “NOT everything just working” as apparently there was a number of missed opportunities. Nevertheless, he still had a respectable bag considering the weather conditions, but unfortunately only good enough for 3rd place.

Clive Powell had a really good bag fishing locally, including a really nice Swan River Flatty of 0.716kg which landed him in 2nd place. And finally, the Ricko we saw last year has returned with another outstanding bag of 9 species and 4 heaviest winning him 1st place.

Bronny! Well what can I say. She is without a doubt one of the best fisherman/women in our club. I have seen her fishing; she certainly puts in the hard work and is rewarded as time and time again she shows up the boys. Her bag this month was an impressive 10 species 9 heaviest, for a total of 8.238kg. The standouts for this bag were a nice Wobby of 110cm, a small but very welcome Breaksea Cod and Flathead of 0.778kg, which was enough for her to comfortably take out the ladies section.

All in all some great bags again from our members, but I’d once again like to encourage people to get their kids involved as no juniors and only one mini junior weighed in, which really isn’t great for a club of our size. I see that there are so many kids present at the club on weigh in day, so surely some of them are keen to get out and catch a fish on the comp weekends. From personal experience I completely understand that this is not easy, however the future of our angling section

on it!

Our next beach fishing competition is on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of December, so here’s hoping for less wind but more of the same good fishing. Please also keep in mind our first away competition is on the long weekend of the 1st and

2nd of March in Port Gregory. As always there is no boundaries as such, but the weigh-in will be at Port Gregory Caravan Park on the Sunday evening 4pm sharp. If you haven’t looked into accommodation as yet I’d suggest getting onto it ASAP.

Cheers again to everyone who helped out with the weigh-in and presentations on Sunday and I look forward to seeing you all in December.

Beach Fishing Report –December 2024

With the summer weather pattern in full force it’s fair to assume I wasn’t the only one hoping the old Freo doctor wouldn’t blow our heads off, but from all reports it did mess up a few hair dos on Saturday afternoon, however for us Bells the Easterly in the morning was so much worse! Fishing the river once again, as we only had a few hours of fishing time before family events was almost unbearable. In saying that we were forced to try a few new spots and we found some nice flathead in the end.

Crew Bell wasn’t having a great morning, and after watching his Poppy, Uncle and Dad catch a number of smaller Flathead the whinging had definitely started. Armed with the new ‘Vexed Shrimpensleve’ lure Crew finally hooked onto a beauty which was not only enough to take out the heaviest for the day but also his photo was shared on Facebook by Vexed and a couple of tackle shops which he was very stoked about! Crew also managed to snag a few more species and took out the Mini Junior category once again with 4 species, 3 heaviest and bag weight of 1.109kg for a total of 63 points.

This month I’m happy to say Crew wasn’t the only kid out fishing! That being said we only had 3 mini juniors and juniors in total. In the recent ‘ORSSC Juniors Day’ kids fishing comp we had 33 kids fish with some ripper bags weighed in. So the question is… where are the other 30 kids?? Come on guys, let’s get em out there!

Ashden and Cruze Marsden headed out with their Pop Graeme Cole and caught a few really nice Herring each and Cruze managed to win the Junior Category for the comp. Colesy also had a beautiful Tailor in his bag of 1.241kg, a great fish for mid summer.

The Veterans section was hotly contested with the top 3 bags all being well over 100 points. Terry Bell placed 3rd with a respectable bag from the river and surrounds.

Next beach fishing comp January 18th & 19th

Clive Powell just piped Terry, although less species he had far more weight and Ricko once again wiped the floor.

This man can fish! 12 species 8 heaviest 7.314kg for a total of 197 points. Just wow! With the stand out in my option the whiting trifecta. Not only did he have the 3 types we are allowed to weigh in but they were all stand out fish and the heaviest in their respective category’s. Adding to this, one of them the Yellowfin Whiting, was also the mystery fish for the month scoring Ricko a bonus of what I believe was just under $200. Ricko, as he did last year has well and truly set the pace for the Vets and will be very hard to beat if he keeps up this form.

The Snapper whispers have returned with Kiwi and Bron both weighing in lovely fish. Bron’s was just heavier coming in at dead on 5kg. You guys sure have these fish down pact!

Bron had a standout bag alongside this fish; 7 Species, 7 heaviest, 8.043kg for a total of 144 points easily taking out the Ladies Section. Another one who even at this early stage of the season will be very hard to beat.

While Kiwi did also have a very respectable bag on top of his snapper, it wasn’t enough on the day to take out Joe Wettinger. Joe, yet again fished a mix of ocean and river and after working hard all weekend had 9 species, 5 heaviest, 3.196kg for a healthy total of 134 points.

All in all another great comp and I’m so pleased to say not only is our Beach Fishing Section probably the strongest in terms of numbers across all the other clubs in the metro region, but our beach anglers seem to be getting better and better as every season passes. In fact 6 competitors this month had over 100 points which is not an easy feat!

The next competition will be held on the on the 18th and 19th of January. Standard stuff no boundary’s, 5am start Saturday morning with a weigh in at the club at 4pm Sunday afternoon. Not only would I love to see some bags like this month, but I would love to see a few more Juniors from the Kids comp have a go, fingers crossed!

Also keep in the back of your mind the Port Gregory away comp on the March long weekend which I’m sure as always will be an awesome event for all. Cheers to everyone who helps me with the running of these events.

Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. See you all at the next one!

Beach Fishing Report –January 2025

Looking forward to the weekend of the January Beach fishing competition it was clear to see the weather was not going to be very kind to us once again. Not so much the typical summer pattern that we have been dealing with but this time a lot more swell, and if we know one thing about summer and swell it means WEED… and boy were we all correct!

While some members decided to stay close to home, some headed North to their usual spots and others ventured further in search of new ground. However unfortunately, almost all of the 18 competitors that weighed in reported that they were met with the same issue…. You guessed it, weed! It was everywhere.

This being said I’m proud to say that with the progression and determination of our competitors, there were still some great bags weighed in. Although we have always done well in the old State events I believe we would be a force to be reckoned with nowadays. Consistently we are seeing amazing bags from our members and we are even often getting comments like “there is no way those fish were caught off the beach” when the bags are being weighed. It’s great to see and I really hope we continue this kind of fishing in the club.

I myself had a plan to take this comp easy, fish one or two spots for the whole weekend and chill out with a beer or two with my brother Mitch, although while we did only fish two spots it wasn’t relaxing at all. We drove nearly 1000km looking for clean fishable water and ended up coming back to where we started, basically fishing the same spot all weekend. Fortunately enough the fish gods did reward us for our efforts and both Crew and I took the win in our respective categories. I was lucky enough to catch 7 species which included a nice eating size Shark,

Snapper of 3.5kg and a Wobbygong which collectively totalled just over 15kg in weight and helped me over the line.

Crew bought himself a new beach fishing reel over the Christmas break and managed to christen it with his first land based Pink Snapper, a lovely fish of just over 5kg. Lucky little bugger, I think I was about 20 before I caught my first land based Pinky! As the weed and swell made it very tough for him to fish he only managed a couple more species for the comp but that fish well and truly made both his bag and weekend!

Terry Bell pushed hard once again and this time was rewarded with 1st place in the veterans category. His bag of 8 species included an absolute slob of a flathead only 20g short of the current club record weighing in at 1.823kg.

Bronny once again showed most of the boys up and easily took out the ladies division. Her bag also included a nice snapper of 4.76kg along with 6 species gaining her 112 points, to take the win. A couple of other stand outs for the weekend were a few nice Tailor just under the 1.5kg mark caught by Kiwi and a not often seen Blue Mackerel caught by Clive.

The highlight in my eyes were the number of Pink Snapper weighed in, with 5 different anglers weighing them in this comp.

I also took the time to have a look at the newly introduced Open Beach Fishing Champion results and believe it or not it’s not until 3rd place that we see

someone from the men’s category. As it stands at the moment first is a Vet, second a lady and not far behind them we see a mini junior. I look forward to seeing who takes it out for the year.

Just a reminder ones again of our up coming away comps:

• Port Gregory: 1st - 2nd March (Port Gregory Caravan Park)

• Walpole: 31st May - 1st June (Rest Point Caravan Park)

If you haven’t already booked your accommodation for these Competitions, I suggest you look into it ASAP, so not to miss out!

Both of these events I’m sure will be great, regardless of fishing conditions, as social events for our members to enjoy and catchup with one another.

Beach Fishing Report –February 2025

I’m going to call it early, but this comp may well be the biggest and best comp for the season. A whopping 24 anglers weighed in after a weekend of great weather and a red hot fish bite which was great to see and there were some cracker bags!

While there wasn’t necessarily any mind blowing fish in the bags, the number of species weighed in was very consistent across the categories.

I myself took my whole family away which wasn’t exactly easy but I was stoked to see all my girls out and about fishing. Boe took out first place in the mini juniors and knocked her little brother Crew off his podium with an outstanding bag of 7 species. She only 1 heaviest but a total bag weight of 12.47kg totalling 126 points, including her very first ‘shark’; a shovel nose of 12.6kg which of course is capped at 10kg, which apparently, her back is still recovering from! Very proud of you chick, Shovels are no easy feat! Crew however was not far behind on 105 points with Ashton Marsden only 1 point behind him on 104 points. I’m so pleased to see some competition in the mini juniors, top 3 all over 100 points doesn’t happen often and I hope there is much more of it to come throughout the season.

The Veterans was a similar story with some amazing bags and the top 3 hotly contested again, all over 140 points. Locky found himself in 3rd place with his bag totalling 140 points. On any other weekend Terry Bell’s bag of 10 species, 6 heaviest, 11.63kg for a total of 183 points would be more than enough to take the win, but in this case, it landed him in second place. Ricko proved once again why he is on top of the ladder netting himself 13 species with 6 heaviest and 6.72kg of weight for a total of 192 points. Great fishing you old buggers! I’m glad I’m not in the Vets or I’d be getting pumped!

Moving to the ladies, we actually had 5 ladies weigh in this comp which was again great to see. Helen Brownfield had a standout weekend (and from what I hear a PB result for her) which secured her first place. 5 species, 5 heaviest, 1.48kg of bag weight for 86 points is a great bag in any division so well done on the PB Helen! I’m sure Bronny will be putting in some extra effort next comp to regain her crown.

The men’s division was almost the least exciting division for this comp. I, myself was the winner this month with a mere 5 species, 3 heaviest, 12.53kg for 118 points and Kiwi was nipping at my heals with only 1 point less. We both had some nice Tailor in our bags over the 1.5kg mark and both reported they became a nuisance when trying to keep baits out for other fish… Good problem to have right! Shovels we also a similarity in our bags with Kiwi’s ‘catch and release’ of 25.9kg on the length to weight scale and my ‘catch and release’ just slightly bigger helping me across the line at 32.8kg. Remember both these are capped at 10kg but the heaviest takes out the 6 bonus points for the heaviest of species.

Other standouts for this weekend were seeing some lovely sized sand whiting caught by several competitors. Terry Bell got really lucky as his ‘catch and release’ shark of only 5kg was not only the heaviest for the day but also took out the mystery fish prize, earning him around $100 cash for his efforts.

I’m proud to say that it is clear to see that our ‘catch and release’ category is now in full swing, in fact a total 6 people used it this comp! While it may not be exactly

Fishing Competition Results

exciting for the spectators at the weigh in, it does help the future of our fish stocks and we will keep working on this system to make it better for the future.

Our next comp is an away comp held on the 1st and 2nd of March with the weigh in at Port Gregory. Nibbles and a sausage sizzle have been organised by the section, so I hope to see you all the for a great social weekend.

Beach Fishing Report –March 2025

Another comp, another windy weed filled weekend!

This season has been a real tough one for our beach fisherman so far and unfortunately the March away competition held in Port Gregory was absolutely no exception. We were faced with consistent southerly winds over 15knts and at some points it was even as high as 25knots with weed as far as the eye could see. Thankfully this didn’t turn off some 40 club members who attended this event and from all reports most still had a great weekend!

The Port Gregory caravan park was once again super accommodating and the nibbles and sausage sizzle funded by the section was in my opinion a great success to make the weigh in more social for all involved. I’d like to briefly thank Terry Bell, Dawn Bell, Marie Ellis, Rhiannon Fox on the platters and my oldest Boe Bell for helping Marie with the

sausage sizzle and all others involved with putting it all together. If I’ve forgotten anyone else, I’m really sorry but thank you so much for your help! Now back to the fishing…

As usual the Port Gregory away competition is very well attended and in the end we had a total of 31 people weigh in. There were more who fished but unfortunately the weed and wind proved too much for them to find a weighable fish over the weekend. Personally, fishing with my Wife and 3 kids it was not easy to find place for them all to be able to fish with ease, even the Port Gregory Bay which usually

provides some nice easy fishing for the kids was extremely hard work. It seemed most who did well and found less wind and weed fished north at either Wagoe or Kalbarri and in the end as usual there were some stand out bags!

The mini junior’s category was set to be something special with 7 young anglers hoping to find a fish or two. Unfortunately, as mentioned before conditions just didn’t allow and at the end of the weekend only 3 managed to find fish. Crew Bell fished his little heart out all weekend snagging 4 species and narrowly took the win from Taj Davis who had 3 species. They then went on to spend the whole afternoon pretending to fish in the playground dingy that is in the caravan park. Having never met each other before this comp it was great to see as Taj’s Dad; Luke Davis and I fished against each other in Mini Juniors and Junior

competitions in the club growing up, so I hope to see some more rivalry between these two.

Boe Bell spent most of the weekend swimming and reading but caught herself a lovely big dart which landed her in 3rd place. We’ve now had 3 or more juniors in 2 comps in a row; let’s keep that going guys, I know the Juniors are out there wanting to give it a good crack, they just need a bit of help from their parents!

In the Ladies Brony stamped her dominance once again after coming in second last comp. This comp she had 6 species, 3 heaviest and 9.819kg in weight for a grand total of 118 points which included 3 overall heaviest. A Mulloway which was one of only two caught over the weekend which weighed in at only 2.746kg but that’s all it needed to be on this occasion. A nice size Tailor of 1.321kg and also the longest Wobbygong of 102cm.

In the men’s we saw Joe Wettinger dominate this away comp once again. I believe this may be his hat trick of Port Gregory wins and equally as impressive; his bag included his hat trick of Surf Parrotfish from this location. Not sure if he targets these fish in particular but either way, catching them 3 years in a row is something pretty special and his Parroty this year came in at 2.773kg. Also in Joe’s bag of 11 species, he had a monster Dart of just under 2kg and a nice size Wobbie that all helped him across the line. Kiwi came in in second place this month and this time it was the bag weight that helped him gain this position. He had a small Mulloway, a nice size Shovel Nose and a Wobbie amongst his 7 species. Both hitting their capped weights adding 15kg of weight to his bag straight up.

The Angling Report (continued)

The Veterans was once again the most exciting category of the competition. In third place this time was Terry Bell, his 8 species bag was only let down by the lack of weight. Clive Powell once again showed he deserves to be in the mix and his bag of 6 species were all quite big for their types. Amongst his catch he had 5 heaviest and in fact even scored himself a new club record with his Minstrel Sweetlip that weighed in at 1.836kg. Almost as impressive (in my opinion) was a beautiful Estuary Cod of 2.228kg, this is not often seen in our beach comps so was cool to see. And last but definitely not least, coming in first place was Ricko…jeeezzz this old bugger can fish!

With 15 species, 11 heaviest, 10.049kg in weight for a total of 256 points, I think it’s safe to say our minds were blown, what a bag! I think just the fact of 15 species on what was seemingly a tough weekend for most was the biggest stand out. But, if I have to break into his bag maybe it was his Snapper of 3.08kg which was apparently one of 4 that he caught over the weekend, a lovely Flathead of nearly 1kg, a ripper Black Bream of 488g or his Giant Herring – although not huge, this is a fish I still haven’t caught and would love to catch. I could go on but instead I will post a picture of his weigh in slip for those who are interested.

Watching Ricko fish on Sunday afternoon briefly while I was boogie boarding with the kids, it’s clear to see how he is consistently weighing in great bags. He fished a spot for well over an hour which I had previously fished for about 5 minutes and gave up because of the weed. Ricko is putting in a huge amount of effort in the comps and being rewarded as he so rightly should. Once again mate, great bag and I hope to see you keep fishing this way for many years to come!

A few other standouts for the weekend; Stewie Graves landed a lovely Baldchin Groper that went 1.785kg, Jeff Porter also lucked onto a Giant Herring and weighed in a Gold Spot Trevally of 1.321kg. Crew Bell caught his first Blue Nose Salmon and we had a total 6 competitors use the catch and release code (which is great to see), one of which was myself that landed the biggest Shovel Nose for the comp at 52.1kg which in the surf took some beating I’ll tell you that much - Brutes of animals.

I feel I could keep writing but I’ll leave it there for now, however I will add couple of things to note for future competitions. As I have talked about a fair bit in the past, I will be petitioning to have our 2 away comp dates swapped with each other in the future. Personally, think it would make for much better fishing in both locations both weather and fishing wise equally, but that’s something that will be talked about after our Walpole event once we see how that all pans out. I’m hoping it is as popular as the Port Gregory event. While on that note, keep in mind the Walpole comp will be held at Rest Point Caravan Park on the 31st May - 1st June. If you haven’t looked at accommodation yet, I’d suggest doing it ASAP.

Lastly if you’re down at the club, please check out the results/standings of the Beach Fishing season thus far. It’s neck and neck in a few Categories and is shaping up to have some healthy competition in the second half of the season. I hope the good fishing continues and we see a few Mulloway in the coming months!

The Sailing Report

April 2025

After the rocky start to the 2024-25 season, the Sailing section have now settled into the new hardstand and are impressed with the new boat ramp access.

With the loss of access to the water for the majority of this year's sailing season now behind us, we are back out on the water and have planned to complete our summer series of racing with a racing on consecutive Saturdays. We have compacted summer series to allow us to complete the summer season before we wrap up with our end of year presentation evening.

Having completed 2 of the 6 summer series, it’s fair to say we have had more than our fair share of technical issues, with launching and things breaking out on the water, this is probably due to a combination of the extended break caused by the ongoing construction and us sailors being a bit rusty!

Our return has been beyond my expectations, with around 7 boats out on the water, always room for more boats but we are very quickly seeing participation growing towards what we had last year, albeit not all boats are finishing for various reasons.

With more boats out on the water for the remaining 4 races of the summer series, ironing out the wrinkles and blowing out the cobwebs, I'm confident we will recover and enjoy the numbers we had last year both in participation and completion of races.

It’s good to be back out on the water, I’m in years to come the 2024-25 season will be memorable for many reasons.

Away from the Ocean Reef marina, we have undertaken our annual trip to Walpole for the Regatta in the trees, numbers were down this year with only 3 boats completing but still we managed to place well, congratulations to Sarah Phipps and Dylan Hess who brought home the honors for ORSSC this year.

Recently ORSSC also attended the Sun City spot race with a trip up to Two Rocks, we fielded two boats for this event, congratulations to the skippers, Terry O’Grady and Hollie Hodkinson, who made ORSSC proud.

Hollie was first across the finish line, winning the line honors for ORSSC, a fantastic day which was enjoyed by all.

Looking forward to continuing the regrowth of the Sailing Section as we rebuild and recover participation following the mov to our new hardstand.

See you on the water,

April 2025 Report

Hello members,

It’s only been a short while since the last Tide magazine, but the section has held, and tried to hold, events since we became 2025.

On Australia Day we had the offer of a mooring near Applecross just out from the South of Perth Yacht Club where five boats met up and rafted together. Some, like Rick and Trish, tied up days before the event while some others arrived on the day. From what I hear, this was a fantastic viewing point of events over the city and, by staying the night on their boats, the traffic horror was avoided. It was windy so the attendees have apologised for the lack

of photos. Of course, that was the day my family departed Perth on an expedition to Antarctica so I missed out. My penance is in one of the photos. I’ve pencilled myself in to attend this event in 2026 as it was decided at a meeting that this become a regular event.

Unfortunately due to a low response rate, our overnight trip to Cockburn Power Boat Association was cancelled.

In March the Dive Section invited the power boaters to their camp at Point Peron. As many of the power boaters are also involved with the dive section, it’s hard to judge how many power boaters came.

Still there were about 50 bodies at the event with some new members who had a great time. We had a selection of boats, jet skis, paddle craft, a floating flamingo and a plethora of snorkelling gear. As the weekend matched up with the crab season we had some early morning snorkellers looking for their feed of blue manna. Unfortunately the predicted 10 knot winds became 15 knot winds by noon but that didn’t deter the attendees. The Rear Commodore Dive (the good looking Peter) arranged a World Cup Series cricket match that the kids took over and had a ball (pun intended). If nothing else, it was great to be able to sit back and enjoy the magical sunset put on for us.

Unfortunately our weekend accommodation at Jurien got cancelled by the house owner and real estate agent so we have had to put that event off until next year. A pity because the long-range weather forecast is for a warmer April and light winds, perfect for that area.

We still have many events booked for the year and here’s a summary:

• 18 May – Fish and chip run to Fremantle (river or ocean depending on weather)

• 29 June – up river run from Maylands to Woodbridge House for lunch

• 13 July – a river run with lunch at a yacht club If anyone is interested in attending any of these events, just send an email to powerboat@orssc.asn.au and I’d be pleased to let you know the details and include you.

Happy boating

A Weekend of Adventure: Busselton Jetty Dive Trail and Shelter Brewing Treasure Hunt

Imagine a weekend filled with laughter, underwater exploration, and a thrilling treasure hunt. That’s exactly what 30 enthusiastic members experienced during the Busselton Jetty Dive Weekend from 21–23 February. The Busselton Jetty, renowned for its stunning underwater statues and vibrant marine life, became the playground for our adventurous divers.

The weekend kicked off with a twilight dive on Friday, where eight brave souls plunged into the waters despite the windy and cold surface conditions. But beneath the waves, the conditions were perfect, offering a mesmerising view of the

underwater statues and abundant sea life. The excitement continued on Saturday morning with a second dive, this time with 16 divers enjoying the crystal-clear visibility and the company of curious marine creatures.

As if the underwater wonders weren’t enough, Shelter Brewing added an extra layer of fun by organising a treasure hunt. They cleverly hid their logo along the dive trail, challenging our divers to spot it amidst the underwater sculptures. The thrill of the hunt added a playful twist to the dives, making the experience even more memorable.

But the fun didn’t stop at the dives. Saturday night was a time for camaraderie and laughter as the dive section gathered at a local Thai restaurant. The meal was filled with great banter and hearty laughs, capping off a day of adventure with delicious food and fantastic company.

The Busselton Jetty Dive Weekend was a perfect blend of exploration, competition, and socialising. It showcased the beauty of the underwater world while fostering a sense of community among the members. The Shelter Brewing treasure hunt added a unique and exciting element, making the dives not just about the marine life but also about the thrill of discovery.

As we look back on this unforgettable weekend, we can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences and the bonds formed. Whether it was spotting the hidden Shelter logo or sharing a meal with fellow divers, every moment was filled with joy and excitement. Here’s to more adventures and more treasure hunts in the future!

Cray Day: A Competition of Crustaceans

Following the Busselton Jetty Dive Weekend, members geared up for Cray Day on 8–9 March. This event saw a friendly competition between Hillary’s Yacht Club, MAAC, and ORSSC to see who could catch the largest crayfish and the heaviest bag. Several of the dive section jumped on Western Blue’s first charter under new management in the hunt for crayfish. It was great to see members

from the fishing section joining in and contributing to the crayfish catch for ORSSC. Despite the poor conditions all weekend, the camaraderie and spirit of the competition were high.

The afternoon was hosted at MAAC club, where their kitchen cooked over 60kg of crayfish. Members won raffles and walked away with great prizes, including bottles of wine, hampers, and merchandise. Sean Murray, the Diving Rear Commodore at MACC, announced that they would sponsor a trophy for the club with the most number of crayfish starting in 2026.

Point Peron: A Weekend of Fun and Games

The fun continued with a fantastic weekend at Point Peron from 14 to 16 March. Over 50 adults and kids participated, enjoying a mix of diving and land activities. Although the diving conditions weren't ideal, members made the most of it with dives at the Rockingham Dive Trail, Garden Island, and Omeo Wreck. Congratulations to the member who completed their open water course!

The highlight of the weekend was the afternoon cricket “Test Match”, where the kids took over and didn’t give the adults much of a chance. Saturday night was filled with laughter, silly games, and a fantastic BBQ. It was a weekend of great company and unforgettable memories.

These weekends have been a testament to the adventurous spirit and camaraderie of our members. From underwater exploration to friendly competitions and fun-filled activities, each event has brought us closer together and created lasting memories. Here’s to many more exciting weekends ahead!

The Poker Report

ORSSC Club Poker

As some members are aware, ORSSC hosts Texas Holdem Poker every Tuesday night down in the Dining hall at the club.

The game started as a social gathering over 20 years ago by a few members who thought it would be a bit of fun and a great social event each week and has now evolved into a social tournament enjoyed weekly by members.

The structure is tournament poker, NOT Cash Poker –the difference being all you pay is an entry fee to join in and you are not constantly purchasing chips and gambling away your hard earned cash.

The number of winning places paid will depend on the number of tournament entries e.g., 1 Table (8 players) only 1st place, 2 Tables 1st and 2nd, 3 Tables 1st, 2nd and 3rd etc.

We play our tournaments in seasons usually between 20–30 weeks and we then play a grand final game with the prize pool being accumulative throughout the season.

All players in the Grand Final must have played a predetermined number of weekly tournaments to qualify for entry into the GF (conditions apply).

Tournaments currently run every Tuesday night from 7pm until 11.30pm.

Registration from 6pm until 6.45 pm.

If running late, phone or text Joe 0403 601 160. No late entries can be accepted

Dont know how to play?

We are looking at introducing a free league table/ tables to teach members the art of playing Texas Holdem and when you are confident you can join in the tournament if desired.

This will be subject to demand, so to express your interest please contact Joe 0403 601 160 or Phil 0438 771 544.

Not a member?

To attend the club and participate in any club activity on a frequent basis you must be a member and poker is open to all financial members.

If you are not a member you can attend and play 2 tournaments, and you must be signed in by a member each time.

If you wish to continue playing you can join either as a full member or as an associate sports member to only participate in poker events (conditions apply )

The new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club is coming to life

Progress at the new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club (ORSSC) building continues to gain momentum, with milestones reached across both the first and ground floors.

As the transformation gains momentum, it’s worth reflecting on the progress made so far. Construction kicked off in August 2024, when Byte Construct mobilised onsite. For context, the Club will occupy the northern corner of the site, as shown in the render on the right, with Marine Rescue Whitfords right next door.

As we move further into April, several key milestones are set to be achieved, bringing the project one step closer to completion.

Render of the new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and Marine Rescue Whitfords.
An aerial view of the new ORSSC building (front) and MRW (back).

First floor advancements

The first floor of the new club building is seeing rapid transformation, with the main roof cover and box gutters were completed in late March. Additionally, roof safety installations are underway, ensuring long-term durability and compliance.

Structural enhancements are also a key focus, with fireproofing of steel columns well underway. Simultaneously, mechanical services installation has commenced, laying the foundation for essential building systems. In the coming weeks, crews will kick off work on the plumbing and electrical systems.

Looking ahead, the external wall cladding is set to begin, giving the building a more defined and polished exterior. Internally, stud wall installations will also begin shortly, shaping the internal spaces and bringing us closer to the final vision.

The upstairs area will be a stunning location for events.

Ground floor developments

The ground floor is quickly taking shape. The walls and ceilings are almost fully covered with plasterboard (gyprock), in preparation for the final touches. Next, workers will start laying wall and floor tiles in the wet areas, making these spaces both practical and visually appealing. Look at the artist impressions above and below for what it will look like when complete.

Precision work continues with site measurements for aluminium windows and doors, ensuring a perfect fit before installation. In the kitchen area, the exhaust canopy installation is on the horizon, which is an essential component for ventilation and safety. Additionally, external elements are taking shape, with the site measurement of external louvres (angled slats/panels, that allow light to pass through while blocking rain and direct sunlight) planned in the coming days.

With each milestone achieved, the ORSSC project is steadily moving toward its completion. Stay tuned for further updates as we bring this exciting redevelopment to life.

Boat ramp update

Four brand new boat ramps opened mid-February providing modern facilities in a phased commissioning process.

The next four boat ramps are progressing smoothly and are on track to open mid-2025. Once they’re operational, the original four ramps will temporarily close to allow for jetty extensions. When complete, these upgraded ramps will be the longest in the Perth metropolitan area, launching alongside brand-new pontoons to elevate the entire waterfront experience. All eight ramps will open mid to late 2025.

Move to the new ORSSC building

The existing club holds a special place for many members, having been operating for more than 40 years. ORSSC, City of Joondalup, and DevelopmentWA are working together to move the club to its new home later this year.
