FEAT. REPORTS FOR Angling, Darts, Diving, Sailing, Social, Powerboat and Club Events.
ISSUE MAR/APR
This serves as the Commodore’s report for the 2023 Half Year General Meeting, and will be my contribution to the March/April Tide magazine.
The forecasts for the completion of the breakwater, dredging, land reclamation and inner harbour seawall remains mid-2023. The relocation date (October 2024) for ORSSC and Marine Rescue Whitfords is also unchanged, with tendering for our new facility expected in 2023. The civil construction work that surrounds the Club continues to expose us to sand and dust, and the project has put additional dust-suppression measures in place.
Vice-Commodore Paul Phipps has organised member working groups for both input into the design, and provide direct communication to members regarding the project. Their input has been very useful during the process of designing a new facility, and their work will be ongoing as we move from preliminary to detail design.
Over the last few months the Committee has been spending their Friday and Sunday afternoons down at the Club performing membership checks. Vice-Commodore Graham Hindley has led the Committee in ensuring non-members are properly accompanied by members when visiting the Club.
The response from members has been very positive, and there has even been a rise in membership applications. We continue to monitor the Club’s capacity to provide quality hospitality, and so far we have been able to accommodate the
increases in membership. If there becomes a need to restrict memberships we will inform the members accordingly.
After serving as our Interim Club Manager since November, Kym Shephard has accepted the position of Club Manager on a permanent basis. We are now seeking a replacement to cover her previous role as Marketing and Communications Coordinator, and we are also looking to add to our kitchen staff to ensure uninterrupted service to our members.
The quality of the experience our members enjoy when they come down to the Club is a priority for the Committee, and the response to our efforts to address unruly conduct associated with the service of alcohol has been positive. There is another area of concern that is becoming apparent, and that is children’s behaviour.
We regularly have large numbers of children playing at the Club on weekends and holidays, and we have witnessed many instances of children putting their safety and the safety of others at risk.
We do the best we can to look after all our members, hence our rules regarding use of the playground equipment, bare feet and access to the bar areas. But realistically, keeping an eye on your kids when they kick a ball over the fence, or stand on top of the monkey bars, or throw sand at their brother, or simply disappear, is the best way to prevent an unscheduled trip to the emergency room.
The Committee and Staff are looking at ways we can commemorate and celebrate the 50 years this Club has been here. Planning for events especially for members, and events that engage the wider community is underway, and we will provide the membership as much advance information as we can.
Best regards,
I am very thankful and humbled to be taking on the position of Club Manager, leading our Members and Staff into a new and exciting future.
In the last 12 months I have worked hard to build the Clubs brand, engage with our Members more and improve Club communication all round. On top of this, I spent significant time getting detailed insights/learnings in Club Systems, Softwares and Operations.
As a result, this has put me in good stead to hit the ground running with the Permanent Club Manager role which I have been doing since last November. I’m sure alot of you have seen me around; for those who I haven’t met yet please feel free to come and introduce yourself.
We have a very exciting year in 2023, celebrating the Clubs 50th Year Anniversary in July. As we approach, we’re hoping to bring together not just a history of the club, but a history of the people that make it what it is. We have been putting some preliminary ideas together, including engaging with the Life Members. More information will follow as we get closer to the month of July, however if Members have anything they would like to contribute in a different way we’d be happy to hear it. This includes any photos or memorabilia throughout your years at the club or fun and interesting facts that new members today would be unaware of.
A new “Buzzer System” will be introduced in the coming months. Thank you to Laurie Campbell (Dive Rear Commodore) for his work in creating the business case and bringing this to the Committee for approval. Some small works will need to be undertaken to create a hot pass in the galley wall to the hall. Members will be able to order at the till like usual, and take a buzzer back to their seats.
Once their meal is ready, there will be a collection point next to the till with a staff member to greet members and ensure they are receiving the correct meals.
We have also updated the Galley till with all meals available on the menu, as well as installed a kitchen printer – no more hand writing dockets and running them into the kitchen. All of these improvements will hopefully keep lines to a minimal length in peak periods and create a smoother process for our Members when ordering and collecting food.
In the last couple of months, we also have hired 2 x additional Chefs, and most recently hired a Senior Front of House Employee to meet and greet members and their guests, ensure meals are to a high standard, troubleshoot any issues and be present to ensure Members are receiving the service that is expected.
Lately we have witnessed multiple instances with Children mis-using the Playground in a dangerous manner. As a part of holding a Membership at Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club, Parents are solely responsible for their children and children’s behaviour. Please be aware that ALL Children must be under parental supervision at all times whilst in the club grounds. I would like to reiterate our playground rules:
• NO GLASS is to be taken into the Playground area (Limestone wall / Sandpit)
• No Climbing onto the Shade Sails from the Monkey Bars
• No Climbing onto the top of Monkey Bars and standing up
• No Climbing/swinging off the Black Poles of the Toddler Playground
• No Standing/Jumping on the red tunnel of the Toddlers Playground
• The Toddler Playground is for Toddlers ONLYNot for older kids to swing off/climb on
• No throwing sand/rocks/jugs of water
• NO Climbing on/around/in Billys Bar (The Pallet Bar next to the Angling Weigh in Boards)
• Children must wear shoes at all times. We understand this may not be the case in the playground, but if they come into the Clubhouse, they must have footwear on.
We pride ourselves here at Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club with our Family Friendly atmosphere and safe club grounds. We want to keep it that way, so with the right etiquette and parental supervision, we can all play safely, and have a fun time.
My door is always open for Members who would like to provide any feedback or suggestions, and we take all feedback (good and bad) on board to ensure we are providing the best service and value for membership that we can.
We have a great team of Staff and a fantastic hands-on Committee which enables us to continue to build strong foundations to ensure a successful long-term future in our current facility, as well as the New Club.
See you all down at the Club soon.
Kind Regards,
Ian

The 3rd annual Kids Fishing Competition and Fish Throw event was a absolute blast. So happy to be writing up on this one as it is the first time since the event has started we can report on how much fun is had for all the young ones in the TIDE magazine.
We had an improvement on interest this year with 34 kids signing on for the half day fishing competition. The weather forecast was fairly decent, light South Wester to stir up the big ones which would later be weighed in by the lucky anglers.
Different tactics employed by all junior anglers included chasing squid across the weed beds directly out from Mindarie. Floating white bait on small gangs around Burns Rocks for sea pike to crushing up Dorritto chips to entice the bigger herring out for nibble on a prawn bait. Most fishos had finished
around 11am and had made there way down to the club for the weigh in and highly anticipated fish throw competition.
Weigh-in started at 12 on the dot with 18 great bags to be weighed in. Walking in all kids where greeted with the juice boxes, icey poles, fresh bread rolls and hot snaggers on the bbq. Rob from Getaway Tackle in Balcatta had the prize table loaded with everything from squid jigs through to skim boards. Well done Robbie. Also on the table we had our runner up and overall winner trophies sponsored by Joondalup Electrical and Air-JEC. JEC also donated the icepoles, drinks and snags, good work Buckets. Plenty of decent bags being weighed in. Species across the scales included herring, snook, whiting, wrasse and some hard pulling flat head.
Whilst the the numbers are being crunched for weigh in. This gives us a little break from fishing and the reel fun starts – enter the 2022 Fish Throw Competition. For those who are not familiar with this exclusive, invite only, once a year, world wide event only held at ORSSC. 3 categories – Super Mini Junior who throw SYD the Squid, Mini Junior who throw Clementine the Coral Trout, and Juniors who throw Pedro the Pinky. Very simple rules, 2 throws each and the furthest in each division takes all. Very interesting techniques used this year from the “Thor Hammer” style to the Frisbee flop. But the best was the “Up there Cazaly”. Just throw that stuffed toy fish straight up into the South Wester and let the wind do all the work. Before throwing commences the kids have to endure body stretching exercises with Boat Captain Buckets to limber up and be at the peak of your performances. Boy did it pay off for the winners. Our overall winners for each division in the 2022 Fish throw comp where as follows. 1st place in Super Mini Juniors launching Syd the Squid was young fella Declan. 1st place in Mini Juniors unleashing Clementine the Coral Trout across the grass paddock was Chase Alnibson. And 1st in Junior division, dispatching Pedro the Pinkie into the stratosphere was Mia Dixon – great effort young lady, serving it it up to the boys.
With the 2022 Fish Throw done and dusted, it was time to move onto the biggest species awards for weigh in. Herring – Toby Weymouth 0.242g, Snook –Nate Melbourne 0.855g, Trevally – Boe bell 0.630g, Flathead Leanna Lambert – 0.400g, Trumpeter –0.261g, Whiting – Lucy Weymouth 0.200g, Wrasse – Finn Pilmoor 0.506g, Squid – Nate Melbourne 0.456g and ButterFish – Mia Dixon 0.268g. Each biggest of species winner got to take a prize pack bundle from the over-generous prize table.
Now onto the overall champs for each each division with some very impressive bags weighed in that would make most of us adults ashamed. Super Mini Junior runner up Harvey Thomson with 4 species, 3 heaviest and 62 points. 1st place Mini Junior with 5 species, 4 heaviest and 80 points was Crue Bell. Nice one young fellas. The Mini Junior division was all out girl dominance. Runner up in Mini Junior was Lucy Weymouth with 3 species, 1 heaviest and 41 points. 1st place Mini Junior with 6 species, 5 heaviest and a whopping 92 points was Boe Bell – great work girls. Now onto the Junior division and this was one for the ages. Runner up Junior with 5 species, 5 heaviest and 77 points was Nate Melbourne. In 1st place also with 5 species, 5 heaviest and 87 points was Leanna Lambert – well done Leanna. Obviously gets her magic touch from grandparents Lyn and Kev Malone – let’s be honest, more than likely just gets it from Lyn.
Well done to all the kids the participated in the day and its so good to see everyone having a great time regardless of what was caught. Parents – great work getting the kids out amongst it and supporting our awesome club.
Biggest of thanks to Robbie at Getaway Tackle Balcatta, once again your support has given the kids so much happiness. You’re a legend and we are lucky to have you on our side. Drew for organizing fliers and weigh in duties. Mumma Maree for cooking all snaggers. Kiwi supplying bread rolls. Abrolhos Tackle for some merchandise, all kids did receive an Abrolhos Tackle sticker. My wife, Sarah Weymouth, for helping getting the food, drinks, icepoles. Thank you all.
That is the 2022 Kids Fishing Competition and Fish Throw done and dusted. We look forward to seeing you all again for 2023. In the mean time keep the hooks sharpened, Lines tight and practice your throwing stretches just like Boat Captain Buckets does.
Boat Captain Buckets signing off.
Our January boat comp was canceled due to inclement weather over both days. We fished the February boat comp at the end January to line up with new calender.Saturday we could not go out boat fishing due to the SWW issued by the BOM website. It does get frustrating knowing that its only a sea breeze coming after lunch and we could still fish half a day. Any how the BOM forecast had not issued a SSW for the Sunday so we where given the green light to get on the water. The weather actually turned out to be very reasonable compared to what was forecast and judging by everyone catches the fish where on the bite for the majority of the day.We even came across a school of dhufish that took a liking to a whole herring on a deep meat, very cool to see this locally.
Wagoe Beach Comp 4th-5th March
Next Boat Comp 1st April
We had 7 boats sign on and 15 bags weighed in. Some absolute ripper fish weighed in. T-Roy Clugston weighed in a very nice Harlequin 1.410kg which was 1 of 3 caught on the day. Plenty of decent Breaksea cod coming across the scales with Terrys being the biggest at 2.120kg. Plenty of sea pike and blue mackeral coming out peoples bags. The fish of the day for me was a behemoth king george whiting weighed in by Sam Broadhurst of 1.124kg! put a saddle on it. It seems strange with all the shark action in the water how little shark we actual catch during our competitions. Would be good seeing a few more of the toothy critters at the weigh in.
No juniors participated in this comp.We only had the two veterans fish this comp with Colesy doing really well on the dermersals with a late morning start as usual. Colesy had 4 species, 3 heaviest, 3.931kg and 65.9 points. Terry Bell taking out the Vets with 8 species, 6 heaviest, 10.478kg and 149.0 points. Well done old fellas. The ladies comp is getting hot with only 8 points separating the 3 that weighed in. Gemma Bayens running in third with 7 species, 3 heaviest, 1.638kg and 91.3 points. Belinda Mallon just pipped Gemma by 0.6 of a point to launch into second spot. Bel had 6 species, 3 heaviest, 6.951kg and 91.9 points. The chocolates go to Sam Broadhurst with 6 species, 4 heaviest, 7.936kg and 99.9 points. Great effort ladies, you mob are showing most of the lads up, love it. The mens was another close one with some very good fish caught. Deckie Troy Clugston just coming in third with 10 species, 2 heaviest, 11.702kg and 135.4 points. Maybe if you hadn't let go of that big dhufish you lost it may have been a different story, but sucked in. In second place was Buckets, just defeating his deckhand by a measly point, imagine if Troy had off caught that big dhufish! Buckets had 8 species, 3 heaviest,
19.345kg and 136.7 points. Back up on the podium in first spot was no other the Francis Mckeon. 10 Species, 5 heaviest, 15.775kg and 161.6 points. Good bag Franga and some great fish caught mate.
Febuary and March are now demersal closures and our next boat comp
is on April 1st. I will keep all updated getting closer to the date. In the mean time we still have our beach comps running and with the annual 2 day beach comp in Wagoe on 4th-5th March, Should be a ripper weekend.
Thanks to all who helped around the weigh in and Mumma Maree getting photos once again.
Next beach fishing comp is on
Rob Meneguz
Superb weather with anglers flocking to the beach. Every division had multiple competitors vying for glory! The catch and release code word was used for the second consecutive comp, with Sue catching a Shovelnose shark.
Some glorious weather was upon us for January’s beach fishing comp, hence the 31 anglers weighing in on Sunday. Some great bags got weighed in, with every division’s results coming down to the wire,
Daniel Bell
It was great to see 10 kids weigh in too. We had a couple of good Pink Snapper weighed in from both Kiwi (2.86kg) and John Lebeter (3.76kg). Sue caught and released a Shovelnose that was over 1.2m after her partner in crime, Ricko, talked her into it. Ricko later realised that the maximum points allocated for sharks for catch and release is 5kg, but goes up to 10kg max if weighed in. Ultimately those extra 5kg of points would have given Sue the win! I guess it will be a week of grovelling for Ricko as I’m sure Sue won’t let him forget it!
In the ladies there was only 10 points dividing the top 3. Deb had a cracking weekend equalling her best ever tally of 6 species with 3 of those being the heaviest, including a Gold Spotted Sweetip, Dart and Wirrah Cod. John Lebeter had another good weekend away bagging 9 species (including the Pinky!) and the win for the Mens. Worth a mention, was Kaia’s 470g Tailor, not only her biggest one she’s caught yet, but also the biggest caught in the Mini Juniors! Fantastic effort Kaia. The Marsden
brothers took out the Mini Juniors and Juniors with both lads catching some great fish and scoring over 50 points, Well done. Locky and Ricko battled it out with only 9 points separating them in the Vets, with Locky reining supreme.
Just a reminder for ALL anglers. Please make sure that the fish you weigh in are presented in edible condition. This means, make sure they’re in a natural fibre bag in ICE. I did notice 1 or 2 bags that didn’t have any ice and the fish were warm. Even if you do not plan to eat the fish you weigh in, you still need to keep them in good condition. As per Beach Fishing Rule 13: “Any fish presented in a rotten, badly deteriorated or generally unfit for consumption state shall not be eligible for weigh in.”

Welcome to 2023, the Sailing Section is active with new events and the start of the Summer sailing season.
We kicked off the year with our first ever annual Rotto Run, five boats from Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club made the expedition across the water with good few additional people opting to take the ferry in order to join us on the beautiful island for what turned out to be a great a weekend away.
The weather both ways was a little choppy, but winds were perfect for clean runs and reasonably smooth and fast sailing.
A fantastic time was had by all, with the general consensus being that next time we make it we make it a long weekend, rather than an overnight trip. The newest addition to the sailing sections calendar was well received and looks likely to become a sailing section tradition.
The mid-week social cruises are also shaping up to be a nice and relaxing addition to our 2023 calendar, we’ve had a small handful of boats enjoy the quiet weekday water away from the weekend chaos we’re used to. The feedback has been very positive so needless to say, I know where I’ll be as soon as I retire!
Our North Coast Series against our neighbours at Hillarys is almost drawing to a close, with 4 out of the 5 race days completed. There is a very even spread of pennants between the clubs, individual
placings within the three divisions have been hotly contested, with honours even, so the final tally is anyone’s guess.
We haven’t been without our share of interesting moments though, during the last North Coast series, one of our boats picked up a couple of great results and the starting buoy. One of the start marker buoys took a small hitchhike as it caught up under the boat’s keel. Also on the same weekend, one of our boats and a trailer breakage whilst attempting to launch, with half the trailer in the water, half still attached to the car, it took 10 people and 1 other boat to get the boat off the trailer, a monumental effort from the skipper and crew resulted in them being able to compete in the day’s racing.
A big thank you to the skippers and crew of Taurus and Venomous for their help that day.
Our final North Coast race and presentations for the series is on the 12th of March.
Recently 3 boats competed in Hillarys’ annual Dash for Cash, a race from Fremantle up to Hillarys competing against sailing boats from all over the metro area. The dash for cash also ran alongside the Pot of Gold race for the offshore bluewater boats, some of which had just returned home from the Sydney to Hobart race. It was incredible to watch them race around Rottnest Island and see how their crews operate so smoothly on such huge boats.
Our fleet of 3 yachts, all in division 2, managed to take home first, second and third, with Bull Bar taking the
top spot, followed by Whim a Way and Quicksilver. An incredible effort by all skippers and crew and what a win for our little local club, state sailing bragging rights aside, this is one for the history books, great result and well done!
The summer season is well underway with 4 races to go until the end of our sailing season. Currently, Whim a Way is coming out on top, but the standings are close, and the top spot is still well and truly up for grabs.
We have a jam-packed ending until our season closes in May, with our two long races to Centaur and Alkimos on the 18th Feb and 13th May respectively, the Ladies Skippers Race on the 1st April (I hear the competition between the ladies is already ramping up) and the Walpole Regatta in the Trees with our new “kids” fleet of Windrush catamarans during the Labour Day long weekend in March. We’ll wrap up with our annual presentation evening on the 20th May.
Looking forward to the months ahead out on the water and all the upcoming events scheduled – see you there.
Andy Hodkinson Rear Commodore, Sailing Taurus picking up 2 first places in Div 3 in the North Coast Series.A section trip to Jurien Bay for the March long weekend with boating around the close by Islands. A number of members are committed to attending with accommodation and caravan space booked in Jurien Bay.

Early December saw the Powerboat section head south to the Mandurah canals and estuary for the annual Christmas Lights cruise to see the amazing display put on by many residents of the canals. The group of ten members of the section enjoyed the prime estuary frontage of “C” Mandurah with the added bonus of having boat pens allowing the
members to leave their boats in overnight. The display was wonderful as always and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Our December dine-in coincided with the club annual Christmas buffet dinner, we had a great turnout for the section and the club in general. A wonderful spread of a traditional Christmas roast buffet was served and enjoyed immensely by all.
The January Powerboat section meeting was held on the 25th of January and we were fortunate to have Laurence Adams from the Waterways Safety Management (Department of Transport) attend our meeting to speak with members in relation to the upcoming changes in Marine Safety Legislation.
Laurence covered many topics including:
1. Changes to the safety equipment required on pleasure craft
2. Alternative Epirb devices and flares
3. Changes in marine radios form 27MHZ to VHF.
The presentation was attended by in excess of 50 members with many engaging questions and conversation as the evening progressed. At the conclusion of the meeting Laurence undertook inspection of members inflatable life jackets and replaced any defective components as a free of charge service provided by the Department of Transport.
Arrangements are currently being made for the Department of Transport to provide a safe receival box to dispose of members expired flares and Epirbs.
Australia Day had a group of members head to Rocky Bay for a raft up, floating on the river,
sharing a great lunch and refreshments amongst friends was the order of the day and what better way is there to celebrate our national day.

Nusa Penida (Bali) dive trip
Friday night Busselton Jetty Dive saw 7 divers load trollies with Scuba Dive Gear and trundle, clunk and squeak (Tapps!) out to the jetty end, 1.8km to the water access platform. Jovial banter was the flavour of the trek in anticipation of the night dive ahead. Support crew Diane and Kristin keeping check, rendering assistance and support, thank you ladies, much appreciated by the touring group.
A very eventful operation whilst pondering the oncoming sunset and darkness of the dive, hoods were forgotten, weight belts left in cars, cable ties became best friends for last min repairs, 25yr old watch straps broken, cylinder straps misbehaving. As one could imagine a symphony of banter to be heard!!!
An advanced Open Water assessment was conducted by the Dive Master, Graeme HindleyRyan and Peter had a host of torches to ensure there would be light! In the spectacular twilight,
the divers dropped into the water with just enough light remaining prior to the onset of darkness below in the magical underwater world. Shoals of glittering fish, vivid coral colours, vibrant octopus’ (two being nightly naughty!!!!). Lots of nooks and crannies to explore amongst the existing pier pillars and the old which have now become part of the dive trail and colourful habitats. It was fantastic. As we trundled and squeaked our way back across the pier, under a flaring blood red moon, one must ponder on how lucky we are to live in such a great location….
A light late dinner and bevy, gear rinsed in readiness for the Saturday morning Jetty dive. 11 divers, a few of the Youth sailors joined the crew. Some whom hadn’t Scuba dived since their school days, as to be expected a bit of gear jigging and adjusting, with initial nerves – it was a great success. Thank you, deckies and support team Kristin and Rear Commadore – Diving, Laurie, Vice Commadore Graeme, a jolly good dive was had by all. Our environmental duty ‘clean-up of the ocean floor’ saw Ryan and Peter Hawker – “The Hunters” collect a troche and fishing lures, Peter (Tapps) –“The Fossicker” locating 3 specky lures also! With no sign of Bruce and his mates, the environment portrayed its awesome array of colourful corals in the sparkling clear water. Among the trundle, clacks and squeaks of the trollies back over the 1.8km hike, the diving banter was fantastic.
BBQ Saturday night at The Legacy Camp, a jovial and relaxing evening. The 5 Caravaners whom stayed at the RAC Caravan Park, traversed the road by foot or by electric scooters, to join the camp festivities. The ORSSC comradeship expanding the sectional integration to the new level of “Tetralogy Group” (Diving, Power Boat, Sailing and Social sections, compounding the clubs common interests to be spending time with likeminded people.
Definition of a Club is an organisation of people interested in particular activities or actions = Sea Sports Club – “Tetralogy Group” of the ORSSC!!!
Thank you all who participated and assisted to make it a great weekend. To the many other club members who would like to join in the fun, please feel free to reach out to the sections for more information.
Welcoming 2023 and all our members is a pleasure to be part of, it is going to be an exciting year as it is the Clubs 50th anniversary. Over the last couple of years and during Covid times we have hosted some fantastic events for members and their guests.
These events have been amazingly successful, and this year is a year to concentrate on the celebrations within our club and our fantastic members. Our focus is going to be with you all, so watch out for some exciting announcements.
Aside from the talents that play Friday nights and Sunday afternoons we want to give you a little more this year.
So Friday 13th January was our first Band Night. MG and the Shakers, a local band, got us up on our feet dancing into the evening. The feedback from our members was so positive they can’t wait to come back again on Friday 21st April!
Australia Day is always one of our biggest events of the year, and 2023 did not disappoint with another sold out day.
Dr Bogus, for the 4th year in a row, belted out their most popular tunes, and the weather was amazing.
Our Aussie barbecue buffet seemed never ending, and if you were still hungry a sausage sizzle kept those tastes buds satisfied. Children always make our events a happy day as they have so much fun which means Mum and Dad can sit back and relax.
February Band night – this time Nite Life were here to add a little something to our Friday Dine in night. Nite Life again is a local band who love to gig at local clubs in the area, one of our very own members is part of this band.
Great night once again and great feedback, it is great to know you are loving these evenings. The family days are important to us as a club –they allow us to welcome all our new members and their families, and they show our long time members how much we continue to grow and evolve with our focus always remaining with being a family club.
I always like to end my report with thanks to all who enable evenings and events at the club to be a success.
Staff, volunteers, and committee members all working together is what makes it so great to be part of this amazing club.

Hey Everyone,
The Social Committee has been quite busy over the last couple months, and you may have noticed a few new faces around the Club helping out with events such as the annual Christmas Party back in December and Australia Day in January.
Saturday 11 March Day at the Races
Friday 17 March St Patrick’s Day
Saturday 18 March Bottomless Brunch
Saturday 27 May Quiz Night
That’s because we have a few new faces amongst the Social Committee who have generously donated their time so we can all have a great day celebrating whatever the festivity is! It’s been amazing having so many people keen to helping out and its very much appreciated.
Santa arriving! We helped with the Christmas Party by setting up for the day and running the sausage sizzle, big thanks for Brendan, Mark and Norm for that amazing effort, it was no easy task with the warmer weather we have been having!
We also helped out with Australia day, we had Linda, Maree and Erin on the door helping sort your tickets. We had Silvio, Scruffy and Peter on the Sausage Sizzle (pictured) and Linda, Greg and Elaine helping serve up the popcorn.
We’ve also had the opportunity to run a couple meat raffles between Christmas and Australia Day and had a few very lucky winners, congrats to you if you won a meat pack from CJ’s Butchers in Beaumaris! (pictured).
Some of the highlights over the last few months was the Club’s annual Christmas Party, it was such an amazing day for the kids with Santa coming (in style, we might add!) and giving out all the presents to the kids and all the activities the Club put on for them. We also had New Year’s Eve, which was a sellout and I could see why, we had such a great day down there and the band, Dirty Little Secret, was amazing and had almost everybody up on the dance floor. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing them again soon due to how popular they were.
In other news, the Club has undergone a small outdoor renovation, we had the new play equipment installed and a few new shade sails, which has been great over the warm summer months!
You also would have seen the email letting you know we have the half yearly General Meeting on Thursday, 16 February. This is a great opportunity to find out about what’s happening around the Club and within each of the sections, as well as an update on the marina development.
Lastly, if you’re interested in getting involved in the Social Section and joining the Social Committee or have an event idea you would like us to look into please contact me at social@orssc.asn.au
Joanne HarfieldThe Social Section has a few events coming up, the next major one is ‘Day at the Races’ on Saturday, 11 March which is being led by Social Committee member Rob Yates. This includes airconditioned bus transfer from the Club to Ascot Racecourse and back. Leaving the Club at 10:30am sharp for Ascot and being picked up around 6:00pm and brought back to the Club for a few sunset drinks. We have secured the Pavilion area which is also close to one of the main bars at Ascot and the TAB for those who like a punt! You can still purchase tickets from the Club website, however you better be quick, they’re being snapped up fast!
The next Social Section event will be a Quiz Night, hosted by Bamboozled on Saturday, 27 May at the Club in the Hall, more information will follow as we get closer to the event, but you can book it in your calendar now. The larger Quiz Nights at the Club have been sell outs over the last few years and we always have lots of prizes up for grabs, so this one won’t disappoint.
The Club also has a few events in the pipeline for the beginning of 2023, including St Patrick’s Day on Friday, 17 March and a Bottomless Brunch on Saturday, 18 March.
It’s also the 50th Year Anniversary for the Club this year and the Club Committee have been busy helping the Club come up with some ideas on how to celebrate in style, so keep an eye out for those events, likely to be closer to mid-year.
