From the Commodore Graham Hindley
G’Day Members, Welcome to 2024, I trust that you all had a safe and enjoyable Holiday period and that we get to see you all out and enjoying the club before we move to our new premises. In November, our Marina Sub Committee conducted a highly successful New Club/Marina information night. Their dedication behind the scenes is commendable, and we extend our thanks for their tireless volunteer efforts. It was fantastic to see the Christmas Buffet and the Kids Christmas Party well attended and enjoyed by all who participated, I know staff and volunteers put a lot of time and effort in to make it a success. A special thanks to Santa who has now earned the rest of the year off along Ian and Jill Younghusband for the use of their car again. Some of you may have noticed a new addition to the play area with the small climbing frame moved and replaced with other equipment. A shout out to Stephen - Rear Commodore of Power Boats who donated, cleaned and made ready the boat for the play area with a little help from Peter Hawker (exTreasurer) Ryan Hawker and Rear Commodore of Diving Laurie Campell, this is sure to provide hours hours of entertainment over the coming years to our smallest members.

A reminder from the committee: let's refrain from playing ball games on the North side of the club to prevent further damage to the fence and ensure a safe environment for all members. As we move into the second half of our 50-year celebration there are still plenty of things happening at the club which will hopefully be well supported by members as you have always done. Some of the events we have coming up that you can look forward to are: Bali By the Sea – February 17 Members Cocktail Gala – March 23 – more info to follow. These are all Ticketed Events and once sold out there will be no exceptions. We also have the ½ yearly AGM coming up in February which is on Monday 26th @ 7.30 so please come down and get involved as it is a member’s club. The different sections will organise events in the coming months, and we encourage you to take full advantage and participate in the social aspects they each of them offer. The club is a hub for SEA SPORTS enthusiasts, providing opportunities for everyone from novices to experienced to learn and engage.
So, with Summer here and hopefully to stay please come down and enjoy our facilities, but please be friendly and courteous to all other patrons so we can experience a nice family friendly club.

over 100 children who witnessed Santa's arrival at the harbor aboard the Whitfords Sea Rescue Boat, then jumping into Ian Younghusband's red convertible escorting Santa to the Club grounds. Santa was kept very busy handing out Christmas presents and having family photos, while Acoustic Dragons performed 3 fantastic sets of music complete with pass the parcel and kids songs and games and Sunny Kids Face Painting were painting some beautiful creations.
Dear Members, Happy New Year! It has been great seeing the club bustling with lots of activity, welcoming many of you throughout the holiday period.
Half Yearly AGM Scheduled – Monday 26 February 2024 I'm pleased to announce our upcoming Half Yearly AGM scheduled for Monday, 26th February at 7.30pm. All Financial Members are cordially invited to attend, providing valuable insights into the Club's financial status and updates on Section/ Membership matters. The Bar will be open prior to the AGM.
TIDE Magazine I'd like to announce a significant alteration to our Members Publication, TIDE Magazine. Starting from this issue, it will transition from a bi-monthly release to a quarterly schedule.
Club Events The festive period was a complete vibe down here as usual! My favourite time of the year. The Kids Christmas Party was another success, hosting 6
New Year's Eve was fantastic, another sellout event. DJ Devoe made a memorable debut performance with their eclectic vibe and style, while the "Run for Cover" Band seamlessly stepped in, in place of our original band we had booked, ensuring a vibrant evening despite unforeseen circumstances. Special thanks goes to our wonderful Social Section volunteers for their efforts in managing the BBQ. As we gear up for Australia Day on Friday 26 January, DJ Karl will be kicking off the day from 12pm, and our favourite Face Painters from Sunny Kids Face Painting will be here from 2pm. There will be some snags on the BBQ from 12pm - 3pm, and the Galley will serve hot Roast Beef & Pork Rolls and Chips from 3pm. Our resident Australia Day Band Dr Bogus will then come and rock the afternoon away.
Please ensure you have your Membership card ready for entry, accompanying your Member tickets. Non-Members holding member tickets will be required to pay the difference at the door. Our highly anticipated Members Cocktail Gala on the 23rd of March will be the Members event of the year. With the dress code of White Cocktail, it will be a night of glitz and glamour. Tickets include a 3 hour drinks package of Beer, Wine & Softdrinks as well as substantial canapes. Entertainment will be by Little Belle. Limited tickets will be available and this exclusive event is reserved for Members only. It is sure to be a sellout so please get in early to secure your place. It's worth noting that our event capacities are constrained by Liquor Licensing regulations, which is why once we are sold out, we have to create waitlists for tickets. Member Tickets are always available first to give you all plenty of time to secure yours before its too late.
Kids Playground Regarding our Kids Playground, we've introduced a charming little addition in the form of an ORSSC Boat nestled in the sandpit. Thankyou to our Rear Commodore Stephen Lazenby, Peter Hawker and the Powerboat Section for sourcing the boat and giving it a little makeover! While it's a great little inclusion, instances of unsafe behaviour by children have been observed. As per Club policy, parents hold sole responsibility for their children's behaviour and must ensure parental supervision at all times within the Club premises. Please be reminded about this important notice. We pride ourselves here at Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club with our Family Friendly atmosphere and safe club grounds. We want to keep it that way, so
with the right playground etiquette and parental supervision, our kids can all play safely and have a fun time.
Friday & Saturday Lunches Galley lunches are going really well on Fridays and Saturdays – if you haven’t had a chance yet make sure you head down while the weather is still nice to enjoy a burger and a beer in the sun! Looking forward to seeing you all at the Club soon. Warm regards,
Kym Shephard Club Manager

Meet the

6ft, medium build, brown eyes, black hair with that 'salt n pepper' look - grey hair LOL. I grew up in a little wheat belt town called Koorda, 200km Northeast of Perth. I have grown up with sports and sporting clubs, it’s just what is ingrained in you growing up out that way. My folks moved back to Perth where I have spent most of my life all be a 2 year stint in Darwin working/fishing. Been a member of the angling section for 6 years. Over that time I became a sponsor of the Angling section which I still do. I have introduced the annual kids fishing competition and fish throwing event into our club. Each year this event gets bigger which is an achievement I can hang my own hat on. I really do enjoy seeing kids of all ages get amongst the fishing which is important for them in this day and age.
At ORSSC, we value our club members and strive to ensure they feel welcome and included as an integral part of the clubs' operations and celebrations. Tide Magazine seeks to select and feature one member of our club in every issue, highlighting aspects of their personality and their contribution to the club so you can get to know them and maybe even say hello next time you see them. The questions we ask share insight into each members personal tastes and lifestyle away from their club duties.

Love making crab, leek and cheese pies and just smashing 5 or 6 at the end! Oh and I don't mind a good fresh prawn. Favourite beverage: I have 3 Mornings I always have a peppermint tea, kinda strange but it gets me going. Weekends ritual with the kids is bubble tea, fresh lemon, fresh passion fruit, half ice, half sugar and sago - YUM. Every other time of the week/day it's just a good draft beer without all the fancy logos and beards. Favourite saying: That was not me. Favourite sport: Fishing, love it, being out on the boat hunting critters away from land dwellers is my place, besides family it’s what I am here to do. Played Aussie rules all my life and that will always have a spot in my heart. How do you like to start your day: Yoga, then some spiritual healing followed by - haha just joking. I honestly like waking up and seeing how much energy my two young ones have when they wake up, it impresses me how much they have first thing! Best piece of advice you’ve been given: From my Father Always listen to what I tell you to do. From my Mother - Don't listen to what your father says! Favourite holiday destination: Family holiday is Indonesia and then down South West. Both places are so easy and relaxing. Fishing Holiday - Nothing beats our west coast destination Monte Bellos Islands - it offers everything except tap beer. What’s your guilty pleasure: Absolutely chocolate, lock it up as I will find it and more than likely finish it all. What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend: Fishing, running around with my two kids and getting the most out of it. What do you enjoy the most about the ORSSC: Its evolution towards making it feel more like a second home and knowing we have good people pointing the ship in the right direction. What do you enjoy most about your role on the committee: Seeing the kids fishing and how much happiness a favourite pastime still can bring to people. Comradery and mate ship within sections to help one another out. I also do enjoy the 9 weigh in presentations and the banter we all have during.

Boat Fishing Report - November Glen Weymouth
Boat Captain Buckets Reporting Once again the weather gods have shown us they are in Don Punches corner trying not to let us get out on the boats to get a fish! Strong 20 knot NE east winds pumping all day and the decision between boat anglers to push it out to the “carry over” day was implemented. So Sunday it was with the weather being a heap more friendly with morning easterly's backing off through the day and some warmer weather to go with.
UPCOMING E VENT S Annual Kids Comp Saturday 9th December. Next boat comp is Saturday 16th December and demersal closure is over.
We had 22 sign on, 10 boats and 15 of those anglers weigh in for the day. November being our only “non-demersal” comp sees everyone take different tactics to get multiple species in the bag. Most obvious of species to target is the bread and butter around the local islands and reefs. Then hopefully get among the larger non demersals on the list to get the bag weight up. The King George were on with some nice ones coming in. It was Sam Tunahurst snake of 727g that took out the biggest for the day. Tailor were a hard one to get on this day but no issues for my second favourite veteran Colesy, picking up a nice one trolling out front of the new marina. Maree had an interesting day and may have had the boat and beach comp mixed up. A happy snap of Maree doing the rounds of her fishing out of Dan Mallons vessel with a 10ft beach rod LOL. Maree had a good day on the water regardless with a good bag of species in a boat comp and picking up the biggest tuna for the day of 3.8kg - good effort with a beach rod. Only a couple of Sambos came in on the day with visitor Jason “dad” Debonos model of 6.1kg being the biggest on this day. Sean “Tyson Fury” Neil picked up a very decent trevally for the day going 1.25kg. Onto the weigh in and we had our new weigh in officer Ricko onto his first boat comp. I am so used to Ricko being a bit boisterous in the afternoons and was concerned being at such a close range how my ear drums would cope. Let me say my ear drums are all in tact and you did a great job mate, thanks for stepping up and taking over the position. The weigh in showed that it was a trickier
14
days fishing and would relate to the big drop on the barometer overnight. We had only one mini junior enter and it was the little big legend Crew Bell getting the job done. Crew had 5 species, 4.278kg, 88.6 points and also the biggest whiting for the day 177g. Well done buddy. The vets seen Colesy and Terry duke it out. Terry could only fish the comp and not attend the weigh in due to a covid result - eating bat soup in Wuhan will get you every time mate. Colesy hauled 3 species, 925g with 37.8 points. Terry taking the chocolates (bat soup) with 6 species, 1.757kg and 99.5 points. Only jokes with the covid and glad it didn’t give you to much grief. The ladies section was on like donkey kong and all within 15 points. Belinda “I'll catch the fish but I am not touching them” Mallon coming in third with 4 species, 1 heaviest, 3.875kg and 53.8 points. Second place Maree “10ft beach rod in boat” Ellis with 4 species, 2 heaviest, 4.557kg and 61.1 points. Taking out first in the ladies was Sam Tunahurst. Sam had 4 species, 4 heaviest, 2.347kg and 68.7 points. Awesome work ladies and once again your bags would give most of the boys a good run.The men’s seen The Tuna King, Elliot Tunahurst up on the podium again this time in third. Elliot had 4 species, 3 heaviest, 5.157kg and 68.3 points. Second was visitor Jason “dad” Debono with 5 species, 2 heaviest, 10.583kg and 83.2 points- results show he had a good skipper lol. In first position just edging out Jason was Buckets with 7 species, heaviest, 9.540kg and 89.1kg.

Thanks again to Ricko for getting onboard as weigh in officer. The team that helped at weigh in Dan Bell, Drew and Mumma Maree. It makes it easy when we have such a solid group always willing to help with out hesitation. Moving forward to our next comp. It will be in December when the demersal ban has lifted, Saturday 16th. Lets hope the fella upstairs that is running the weather program can be on our side for this one, fingers crossed. Boat Captain Buckets signing out. “It not too late to be good for Santa”

UPCOMING E VENT S Next Boat Comp 27th January, 2024
Boat Fishing Report - December Glen Weymouth
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year. December comp is start of our demersal seasons competitions. We just needed some decent weather to be able to get on the salty brine. The forecast for the weekend was not looking the great. Saturday morning was looking very decent. Our best chance was to make use of our new strong wind warning rule to fish half day with a 1pm weigh in. This suited all anglers and especially the part timers. 9 boats and 20 people signed on for the day. Strategies had to change for this comp, having only half a day to target our elusive list of species. Some went wide straight of the bat. Whilst others picked on the bread and butter inshore to try accumulate a bag for the weigh in. We know what Dan “Noodles” Mallon plan was. And that was to sabotage his deckies great effort of a Gummy shark boat side letting it slip out through a massive hole in the net. My boat fished on the pick for most of the morning burlying up the majority of the species. Picking up a decent harlequin in only 16 meters was my highlight. Mitch Bell our favourite accountant always plucks something out of his keister and this comp was no different. Mitch managed to catch a 15kg Sambo whilst targeting King George, Blue Mackerel when searching for tailor and a very lost Queen Snapper in 40m of water! So we all lobbed back at the club for the 1pm weigh in, the breeze was just starting to swing as per forecast and we where all back on shore not getting belted by the Freo Doctor. The results at the weigh proved it was a tricky days fishing. Not one snapper was weighed in, surely that must be a first for a boat comp? 18
The vets where out in force for this one. Must be trying make up for all the bad things they had done in the year to impress Santa. My second favourite vet and part time fisho Graeme Cole coming in 3rd with 2 species, 1 heaviest, 1.78kg and 29.6 points. Second was our new threat to the old boys Vince “Almond Latte” Cox. Vince had a good bag of 3 species, 2 heaviest, 0.55kg and 43.1 points. Just making his way into first position was Terry Bell with 6 species, 5 heaviest, 17.9kg and 125 points. The ladies are all over it again. Mumma Maree up on the podium again. 1 specie, 1 heaviest, 0.130kg and 16.3 points. Sam Tunahurst running in second with 2 species, 1 heaviest. 0.25kg and 26.5 points. Sprinting through the finish line in first spot with a very good bag for the day was Belinda “I don’t touch fish”.
Belinda Mallon had 5 species, 4 heaviest, 4.39kg and 82.8 points. Nice bag of species for a short day fishing. The mens was very close with species and weight. Rob “Chuckie” Walters in 3rd with 6 species, 2 heaviest, 11.79kg and 95.6 points, Boat Captain Buckets in 2nd with 7 species, 3 heaviest, 6.47kg and 100.9 points. In first place Mitchy Bell with 7 species, 4 heaviest, 21.7kg and 137.5 points. I did enjoy the half day comp especially at that time of year when things are getting hectic with Xmas. Maybe having half a day comp for that December one is a good thing for the future? Our next boat comp is on Saturday 27th January. This is actually our February comp that we cannot fish in February due to demersal ban. Boat Captian Buckets signing out. Merry Xmas & Happy New year.

Beach Fishing Report – November Rob Meneguz
Summary Crew Bell has a weekend for the ages, posting an incredible 172 points including a monster Black Bream of 843g! We had three anglers get the magical 10 in the species count. The vets top three competitors all get over 100 points!
Highlights What a weekend on the scales! We had some extremely impressive bags get weighed in this comp. We had 17 anglers competing for glory with some individuals turning it on! I had to pick my chin off the floor when I emptied out young Crew Bell’s bag onto the table. The five-year-old champion had 10 species including an absolute slob of a Black Bream. I was enjoying the story Daniel Bell was telling me about how this Bream was caught. He mentioned they were fishing the morning for Flatties when Crew had enough and wanted to do some bait scrounging for later. He got his dads bait belt and went on the search for some small crabs. Crew managed to get half a dozen which was the secret ingredient for his success. Later that afternoon one of these unfortunate crabs fell victim to the Bream pulling hard, giving him a great battle on the light gear. Daniel was just so relieved the light leader held and/or the hooks didn’t come out! Once it was on solid ground it was high fives all around with on lookers extremely shocked and impressed by the little dudes efforts! Crew also managed to get the trifecta of Whiting! A Trumpeter Whiting, King George and Yellowfin! I’m not sure how many times that has been done 20
but surely that’s a first for mini junior! WOW, just WOW! Stewart Graves took out the Juniors beating one of his mates Keane who took out second place. Both youngsters had a Wrasse, but Stewart also had a Butterfish securing him the win. In the Ladies, Maree’s hard efforts got her the reward she deserved. Maree got a great Flathead of 351g. She also caught a Dart, but it was 1cm off being size! Donna weighed in a Wrasse which earnt her second place. In the Vets, we had some great results. A quick mention to Colsey, who had a good bag of 7 species and 98 points, not good enough for a placing but secured the lucky competitor prize. Terry Bell fished well and got third place with the
biggest Tailor of the day at over 1.28kg. Terry also got a Garfish of 265g and another good Skippy of 553g. At 103 points you could almost say third place was a bit stiff! It’s just great to see some real good competition in the angling section currently, three Vets getting over 100 points is just impressive! Locky got second place with 9 species, almost 3kg of weight and 126 points. Ricko backed up last comps efforts with another win. Ricko was another with the magical 10 in the species count. Ricko had a good mixed bag including the only Sweep of the day and a nice Sand Whiting of 127g. Ricko had 136 points almost replicating (1 point off) last comps score!
got the three different species of Whiting allowed to weigh in. Dans score of 147 points was enough to get the job done! On a final note, my young son Rexford enjoyed his first outing on the beach joining his parents for a local sunset fish. His eyes lit up when seeing his dad casting into the horizon. He even didn’t mind the breezy conditions that were been offered up by the gods. Won’t be too long before he weighs in his first bag at the club!
The mens division was also fiercely battled out with Mark Purchas coming third, making it back to back comps in the top three. Mark had five species including the biggest Wirra Cod of the day and the “second” biggest Herring. A respectable 69 points to add to the tally puts him right up there in top few spots in this years competition. Tyla Gillespie came second with eight species, including a Sweetlip of 880g. Tyla’s score of 123 points will be a handy inclusion to the overall tally at the end of the season. Daniel Bell managed to get back to the top of the table with an impressive 10 species too. of 172 points was no fluke, backing it up with a very similar scorecard of 168 points. From what I hear Crew fished his little heart out and had to be dragged to bed the early hours of Sunday morning. Daniel and Mitch battled it out for first place in the men’s, with Daniel pipping his younger brother by the narrowest of margins at only 2 points. They both had 10 species and 4 heaviest, with Daniel having the extra 500g of weight. Joe finished off the placings at 3rd with an impressive 94 points, narrowly beating Tyla by a mere point. Joe also collected the lucky competitor prize, so it was smiles all round!
Summary Crew Bell backs up November’s efforts will another score over 150 points! Dan and brother Mitch battled it out for first place with only 2 points separating them. Top 3 Vets scores all exceed 100 points. Mystery fish jackpot finally goes off seeing Tyla pocket just under $500 smackaroo’s.
Highlights It was a weekend for the Bell lads with only Terry not contributing, due to a holiday down south, which he wasn’t prepared to end early to make the weigh in. Crew showed everyone that the November score
Tyla had a whopping Wrasse of 846g, the second most impressive fish in his bag. The most

impressive fish caught all weekend was Tyla’s 398g Sweep. The reason the fish was crowned the fish of the week, was the dollar value behind it. At the weigh in, this fish was randomly selected as the mystery fish. Tyla collected a sum of $480 which has been accumulating over several months! On another note, Adam Broadhead posted one of his best bags to date. Adam had a score of 74 points including a Gold Spot Sweetlip of 504g. In the Ladies, for the second week in a row, we had a tie between Donna and Maree. Both ladies had 2 species each and 2 heaviest. It was Donna who had the extra weight this time though, gaining her the win. Donna had the heaviest Sand Whiting of the weekend at 339g, great work Donna! I hope this rivalry continues in the coming months. Maree struggled to find clean water, with the wind and weed causing her a few issues. Persistence allowed Maree to weigh in her two fish. The old boys are putting on a great show this year! This is the most contested the Vets has been off the beach in my tenor as the beach captain, that’s
for sure! Ricko, Locky, Terry, Clive and Colesy are all very experienced anglers and each week it seems to be someone different claiming victory. This month Colesy got into the top three after narrowly missing last month. Colesy took out third place with the only Mulloway caught at 2kg. Graeme also had the heaviest Tailor at 977g. Ricko had to settle for second place with a very impressive nine species and 129 points. Ricko collected $40 from his four heaviest sponsored fish. Locky matched Ricko’s nine species but collected 150 points. Locky weighed in a Wobbygong shark of a little over 5kg, along with a Chinnamon cod and a Pike of 288g in his mixed bag. Clive had a respectable score of 82 points and 2.45kg earning him 4th place. Tight lines

The Sailing Report Season Summary Andy Hodkinson
After a wrap-up of a great Spring Series of racing just before the Christmas period, we’ll shortly begin our Summer Series of racing. Our Spring Series saw a great turnout of boats, with some old faces and a few new ones joining us on the water to enjoy some good weather throughout. We had our Christmas party in mid-December, which saw great company and a good time. It was good to celebrate on dry land for once and our Sailing Captain, Scott, set up a great twist on the traditional Secret Santa game, resulting in a hotly contested bottle of Bailey’s and lots of laughs. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us. We’ve just passed the halfway mark in our North Coast Series with Hillarys Yacht Club and are looking forward to our next race with them in February. The competition is tight as always and the Hillarys fleet are definitely keeping our Ocean Reef fleet on their toes. As always, a huge thank you to the ORSSC and HYC start crew and volunteers who make this happen for us every year. Looking toward more inter-club events, we have been invited back to the HYC Dash for Cash race from Fremantle to Hillarys – an invitational event open to the metro sailing groups with the inclusion of an offshore fleet to sail around Rottnest. Last year, some of these offshore boats had recently returned from the Sydney to Hobart race and was quite the spectacle to sail alongside. I know some of our sailors are quite excited to compete in such a large-scale event again. 24
The Shelley Sailing Club has also invited our Dinghy Section to participate in their Convict Bay Regatta over the Australia Day weekend. We have a handful of our Windrush 14 catamarans competing and they are looking forward to the event in the lead up before they head down south for the Walpole Regatta in March. Wishing you all the best for 2024 and thank you to all who joined us in 2023 to make another great year of sailing. See you on the water,
Andy Hodkinson Rear Commodore, Sailing

The Power Boating Report
Season Summary Stephen Lazenby
The power boat section is a close-knit group with the Divers and a group of passionate boat enthusiasts who loved nothing more than spending their weekends out on the water, soaking up the sun and enjoying the thrill of the ocean. But recently, they had decided to take on a new project that would not only benefit their own members but also bring joy to the younger generation.
It all started when the section had purchased an old boat that had been sitting in a junkyard for years. It was a small power boat that had seen better days, but the section saw potential in it. They wanted to refurbish it and add it to the children's sandpit, creating a fun and unique play area for the little ones. The project was met with enthusiasm from the section members, and they wasted no time in getting to work. Some of the most experienced members, Peter and Ryan Hawker, Laurie Campbell, and Leith Oldham, took charge of the refurbishment. They spent several days cleaning, sanding, and repainting the boat to make it look 26
brand new. They even installed a new floor and carpet to ensure the safety of the children. It was heartwarming to see the section come together and work towards a common goal. They were all determined to create something special for the children of the club, and their hard work paid off. The finished product was a beautiful, brightly coloured boat that looked like it belonged on the water. The section was proud of their accomplishment, and they hoped that the children would get many hours of enjoyment from the new addition. They couldn't wait to see the smiles on their faces when they saw the boat for the first time. The section celebrated their monthly dinner at the club on the same night as the club's Christmas buffet dinner. It was a perfect opportunity to showcase their new creation and also raise funds for the section. They held a raffle, and some lucky guests even won Christmas presents. But the highlight of the night was when they drew a winner for the members' draw, and a very grateful member went home with a $4,000 Christmas bonus.
As the night came to an end, the section members couldn't help but feel proud of what they had accomplished. Not only had they created something special for the children, but they had also brought joy to one of their own members. It was a reminder of the strong sense of community within the club. But the power boat section is gathering for an Australia Day raft up in Applecross on Friday, January 26th, and all club members were invited to join in on the fun. They wanted to celebrate their love for boats and the beautiful Perth waters. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to join our members for the raft up and I will give you further details. Kind regards,
St ephen Lazenby Rear Commodore, Power Boating

UPCOMING E VENT S Karrie Valley – 27-29 October Jurien Bay – 23-26 November
Highlights RAC Karri Valley Escape
If you have not been to the RAC Karri Valley Resort - Chalets since it has been re vamped, its definitely worth considering! 20 of the Dive Section crew headed down for an end of winter country break. The weather was superb, until Sunday afternoon when the heavens opened, and the wind blew a gale. The walking trails to the waterfall/pool and to the Tree with a Hole are in great repair, accessible by all, even Jan in her thongs managed it!!!
Barbecue on Friday night was a great catchup for all including those who were availing of the Caravan Park. If you are an RAC member, there is a reasonable discount on offer. Kayaking on the lake was a joy - no turnovers, much to the disappointment of the ‘Peanut Gallery’ onlookers!!!! The group availed of the opportunity to see the locally owned original Tram and Tram Trip, also recently refurbished and reopened. It was well worth the
28
dollars. Historical information and behind the scenes shenanigan stories shared by the Tram Controller. Some local wineries were traversed, nothing too exciting was the report. Happy Hour Cocktails in the Resort Restaurant/Bar were very reasonable and tasty, as was the section dinner booking. The food and service were a delight. Thank you all who joined in the venture. Jurien Bay Weekend 23/11/23 - 27/11/23
What an amazing start to the weekend, fabulous Perth weather, 18 dive section people and 3 boats ended up at Jurien Bay Tourist Park. A few were lucky enough to arrive on the Thursday morning, settling into cabins and parking up the caravans and boats, swimming and enjoying the glorious sunset drinks on the beach… bring on summer!!! Friday more people arrived, Graham, Rick, Laurie and Helen went out in the boat diving for crays, but they were all undersize. From a Local report, we were most likely two weeks too early for the crays to come back in. The dive spot chosen was fantastic, lots of fish, sea urchins and many baby Dhufish. We spent the afternoon enjoying the sunshine at a protected beach by the marina on the SUP’s, a few drinks, then back to camp to sit at the BBQ area to share lots of different curries and rice from the group, what a feast. Early Saturday, saw three boats in the water, some (nicknamed the Tourists!) went to an island to swim, and chill, while others dived for crays 5 miles out and in 20 metres of water. Again, not a lot of crays out there, but the dive site was great. The second dive plan was to search for a wreck not far from the island, didn’t find the wreck but the scenery was amazing under water, the yearning to catch dinner was stronger than sightseeing a wreck! Again, fantastic under water visibility. A huge octopus was playful a massive manta ray put on a graceful display. The “Tourists” had fun beaching one of the boats while waiting for the divers to return and a bit of a workout to relaunch it from the sand! Back at the camp and after showering, rehydrating, some of the group went to see the RSL Army Band play at the Jurien Rec Centre. It was really good, featuring the bagpipes! Then out for dinner at the 30
Sandpiper Inn, partying later at the Beach Cafe where there was live music, we had to dance of course. Sunday following pack up, most had a safe drive back to Perth, the lucky ones stayed on for another day and left on the Monday. The weather was swelteringly hot in Perth and there were the fires which were a real worry, but at Jurien the weather was magnificent, no smoke.
A fabulous weekend was had with awesome people, thanks to everyone involved with the planning and those who took boats up. Gaynor Allis

UPCOMING E VENT S Sunday 17 March
Golf Day
Hey Everyone,
Upcoming Events
Social has been busy over the last 2 months. We had volunteers helping out at Melbourne Cup, including myself, Paul and Deborah selling sweeps and Erin and Norm on the door!
Social has a lot of plans for 2024! Our first Social Section event will be ‘Golf Day’ led by Norm on Saturday, 9 March 2024 out at Chequers Golf Course in Bullsbrook. We’re still in the process of organising the finer details, but as always, we can guarantee a great day out including comfortable luxury coaches to take us out there and back, including drinks on the buses, plenty of drinks on the greens and a feast at the end! We’re planning on a few other things on the day to keep it interesting so keep an eye out for the posters and tickets which will go out mid-January 2024. I’d like to add that you do not need to be an expert golfer for this event, this event is for fun and laughs!
Thank you to Sue for selling meat raffle tickets on 22 October – Congrats too all our lucky winners! Social will be selling meat raffle again on Christmas Eve too, so make sure you get down to win CJ’s Butchers Vouchers valued at $100 for first prize and $50 for second prize! Social will also be down on Friday, 29 December to sell 100Club from 5pm until sold out – and it sells out fast so if you want a square, get down early!
Following Golf Day, Social is looking to put on a Casino Night in our Clubs Hall in May and were looking at bringing back ‘Bogan Bingo’ in August as this was a sell out in 2023, lots of people missed out so were doing it again! Our annual ‘Day at the Races’ will be back in 2024 too - we’ve already locked in Saturday, 26 October 2024, so block out your calendars. If you have an event idea, get it touch, we have a couple dates free that we are looking to fill with something new!
32
Past Events (last month) The Social Section recently headed out to Ascot for Irish Day at the Races on Saturday, 22 October. Firstly, I’d like to thank Rob for putting the event together and everyone who came who made it such an awesome day. This event sold out in less that two weeks which I think is a new record for the Club and the Social Section, so we can’t wait for the next one in 2024! We started the day around 9:30am at the Club with myself, Brendan, Rob and Baz serving plenty of drinks for everyone, then we grabbed a few roadies each and jumped on the two luxury coaches that took us out to Ascot. We had hired the Pavilion, however we were upgraded to the Deck! This spot was amazing, we had a private roped off area, uninterrupted views of the finish line and we had access to two bars as well as the TAB and local bookies!
We had a couple big winners on the day, Dave picked up $1,000 and Brendan picked up $1,500! Well done to our lucky punters! We had prizes for best dressed Man and Woman. Lou picked up best dressed woman and Barry picked up best dressed man! Everyone looks great so it was hard to pick winners. The Club brought back Melbourne Cup this year on Tuesday, 7 November and they did such an amazing job, hopefully this will be an annual event! They had a great drinks package available with lots of choice and they had the Shakers playing live music outside in the sunshine, various paellas cooked on site and a huge grazing board full of cheeses, crackers, fruits, dips and more which then switched to a dessert grazing board in the afternoon full of cakes and mini donuts.

Social Report (continued)
Social helped out by selling sweeps and sitting on the door. Deborah and Paul were selling $2, $5 and $10 sweeps for the winning horse and myself and Sandy were selling Exacta and Quinellas. Congratulations to all the winners on the day, including the horses 3 – Without a Fight, 6 – Soulcombe and 14 - Sheraz. Erin and Norm sat on the door checking tickets and we wanted to thank everyone for their patience as they had to check tickets by sight, rather than use the scanner.
U P C O M I N G E V E N T S (C L U B ) The Club has plenty of upcoming events for 2024, including Australia Day on Friday, 26 January, Bali by the Sea on Saturday, 17 February and Members Cocktail Gala on Saturday, 23 March plus much much more. The Social Section has been working with the Club to make sure all these events are great with lots of entertainment throughout the day and plenty of volunteers around to help out.
34
Social also donated all the prizes for the Fashions on the Field, including bottles of wine, vouchers for Priceline and Retravision as well as a free kid’s meal to our smallest (and cutest) winner! Angie from Photogenix also came back with her Mirror Booth and a money gun taking tons of awesome photos for us for free, Angie is an absolute star and we have loved having her at our events in 2023 and hope to see a lot more of her in 2024! The Club also just threw the Annual Kids Christmas Party on Sunday, 17 December. It was a great day enjoyed by all. Santa arrived in style, like he always done via the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue boat and then by a Red MG driven by Ian and Jill Younghusband up to the Club, Santa also had some new helpers this year – Rudolph, or as we know him the Commodore! It was great to see so many kids enjoying the day and hope they all enjoyed their gifts from Santa, I know my little one did! A huge thank you to our Social Volunteers Linda, Norm, Paul, Silvio, Scruffy, Sheila and Erin for their help on the day. Norm, Linda and Paul helped the Club staff set up for the event by moving all the gifts into the hall for Santa, moving furniture, bringing out the BBQ and setting up gazebos. Paul, Silvio, Scruffy and Norm ran the sausage sizzles from 1pm to 3pm and sold out, so next time we’ll make sure we have a few more. Then Linda, Sheila and our amazing Marketing Manager’s Husband Ross and children helped run and monitor the carnival games all day. Then Erin and the entire Robertson family packed everything up and put it away in prep for the next event – New Years Eve!!

General Business Now we are in the warmer month, the Club is getting busier and busier, this means long lines at the bar. To help us, help you, please consider bringing your empty glasses to the bar with you when you purchase your next round of drinks. The less staff we have collecting glasses, the more we have serving you drinks behind the bar. For new Club Facilities information, please email the Social Section representatives Silvio Delfino delfino@iinet.net.au or myself at social@orssc.asn.au. Or if you see us at the Club, we’re always happy to chat!
Any important information? Lastly, if you’re interested in getting more involved at the Club, involved in the Social Section and joining the Social Committee or have an event idea you would like us to look into please contact me at social@orssc.asn.au.
