Hello Members,

This issue of the Tide kicks off 2023 and our 50th year as a Club. This is a big milestone for us, and we plan to celebrate it in style. Our Sections and staff are putting events in place, so browse the website, check your emails and watch this space for the announcements.

Marina Development

The latest update from DevelopmentWA forecasts the completion of the breakwater, dredging, land reclamation and inner harbour seawall to be complete in mid-2023. The relocation of ORSSC and Marine Rescue Whitfords remains two years away, with tendering for our new facility expected in 2023. The civil construction work that surrounds the Club has exposed us to a lot of sand and dust, and the project has responded to our request to enact dust-suppression measures. It’s been a challenge to stay on top of the dust and we continue to communicate our issues with the construction to DevelopmentWA.

To recap:

• The ORSSC will continue to occupy the current building until completion of the new facility.

• The City of Joondalup will own the new facility, and the ORSSC will be the tenant.

• Marine Rescue Whitfords will occupy a facility adjacent to the ORSSC building.

• The Club has provided input, including provisions for the RSL, in the design of the new facility.

Management Committee

I am impressed and grateful for the effort and participation by the 2022/23 Committee. They have taken on the challenges as they arise, including:

• Managing capacity – Our facility is limited by size and staff as to how much quality hospitality we can provide. The demand for memberships has put pressure on our Club, and the Committee regularly monitors members’ bar and dining experience to see if there is a need to control membership capacity. So far we have held off implementing membership caps, but we’ll keep an eye on it.

• Club access – related to controlling capacity, Vice-Commodore Graham Hindley has led the Committee in implementing regular membership checks to ensure non-members are properly accompanied by members when visiting the Club. The response from members has been very positive, and checks will continue as needed.

• New Club Facility – Vice-Commodore Paul Phipps has taken on organising working groups providing input into the design the new Club facilities. Their work is ongoing, and preliminary layouts for the future facilities will be provided to members when completed by DevelopmentWA.

• Club Manager – the departure of the Club Manager in November required the Committee to address the short-term and long-term need to fill the position. A Sub-committee was formed to address that need, and the result of their work will be announced to the members when completed.

In addition to managing the Club business, your Committee members organise their Sections, sell-out the raffles, and do the draws. They are almost always present and are an integral part of providing members a link to the running of their Club.

Staff

We are fortunate to have a core of dedicated staff that provide the service and hospitality expected by members. It’s never going to be perfect, but it’s pretty good. As we move into the summer months, the pressure on staff to deliver will increase. In the past I have asked for, and they have received members’ patience and understanding.

I’m looking forward to our 50th year, and anticipate sharing a weekly sherbet or two. Stay safe everyone.

Best regards,

Ken Wood

Marina Committee Report Summary

Anyone that has visited the club in the past 2 months would have noticed the work within the marina on the land reclamation stage. The area directly to the south east of the club is the area allocated for the ORSSC and Marine Rescue Whitfords sites. The area to the north is the foundation area for the northern foreshore and commercial areas. Once the reclaimed land is roughly formed the revetment walls will be built around the perimeter, the work on the outer wall continues and is due to be completed mid to late 2023.

Recently there has been significant amount of sand and dust blown over the club, hardstand and boats. Ken Wood informed development WA of the impact to the club and members and within the last couple of weeks the works accelerated to finalise the removal of the hill to the south of the club and hydro mulching the area.

The ORSSC and MRW buildings are in a concept design stage. The ORSSC building has been draft to optimise hospitality efficiency by the consultant company Executive Compass and is currently being reviewed for compliance of Australian, State and Local Government regulatory requirements and structural engineering design. At this stage the Bar, Kitchen and Serving areas are approaching a finalised design. The Facilities Working Group are currently review the serving area designs with staff. The Working Group is also engaged with sections and staff to audit equipment and requirements of items planned to be relocated into the new building from Televisions, Playground equipment to the Dive compressor.

6

Current design focus area in red outline.

Carabiner recently presented a concept design for the office and administration area and landscaping designs for ORSSC to review and comment.

Detailed design of the building internal plan and external design is scheduled to start in early 2023.

Proposed ORSSC site location
7

The ORSSC building concept is slowly becoming a reality and the work is just beginning for the hardstand development. The proposed ORSSC hardstand location has not changed much in the past months but the dimensions and adjacent land allocations has been changing with planning development discussions between state and local government. The Hardstand Working Group are now evaluating the current allocations and dimensions to optimise the layout and cost the site development.

The Community Engagement Working Group has been working on a Memorandum of Understanding to support the local Mullaloo Sea Scout group and the Working Group has recently engaged local government with a proposal to support

recreational community sports such as paddle boards and other paddle craft. The current development plans do not show the safe launching and retrieval area for paddle craft. The previous marina had approximately 200m of safe launching and retrieval beach for paddle craft and we are looking to ensure there is responsible safe planning to retain these facilities in the future development.

Meet the Committee

At ORSSC, we value our club members and strive to ensure they feel welcome and included as an integral part of the clubs' operations and celebrations.

Tide seeks to select and feature one member of our club in every issue, highlighting aspects of their personality and their contribution to the club so you can get to know them and maybe even say hello next time you see them.

The questions we ask share insight into each members personal tastes and lifestyle away from their club duties.

Sheila is now retired but previously worked as a Special Needs teacher assistant for 15 years. She has been a member of the club for five years and is an Ocean Reef local.

Sheila enjoys the social side of the club and attends most of the events, especially anything that involves dressing up.

Sheila helps out with the Diving and Power Boat sections monthly 100 club, and she also runs the Quiz night every first Wednesday of the month and tries to make it interesting and fun. Sheila has been known to give the answer away by accident a few times! The Quiz night is open to all Members so feel free to join her.

The Angling Report

Boat Fishing Season Summary

November is our only comp we fished during a demersal ban - for the time being!

Saturday’s forecast was not very nice at all, and the day had to be scrapped due to SSW. Forecast for Sunday was a tad better and no SSW to hold us all back - all 12 who signed on LOL. The weather started off a bit strange compared to what was predicted. Rain with some strong gusts before the sun finally poked its head out.

Most boaties will hit up the bread and butter species first of the bat, good plan with the unprecedented heavens giving us grief. It was at this time I realized I had not re-entered any local way points onto my GPS - BUGGER. Drive of shame back into port to get my deckies good wife Kath to meet us at the ramp- did I cop some curry over that.

Back in at the weigh, in all rugged up and huddled in tight, all 10 off us. We lost Matty and Gem during the day, Matt said he was sick and couldn’t make it down. Obvious Gem kicked his butt again and he took the easy option out. Once again we had plenty of sambos getting weighed in with the biggest going to Terry Bell at 8.4kg. Andy Cass managed to weigh in the sometimes very elusive blue Mack at 0.237grams and also came a tie with Terry in the heaviest whiting - 0.170grams.

UPCOMING EVENTS

It was a very quick weigh in due to low numbers and weather no playing nice. We had no juniors enter for the day or any women rock up to weigh in. Veterans was an all-out brawl once again. Graeme part-time fisherman Coles running in third with 3.403kg, 2 species and 26.8 points. The two Bell Brothers had it out again at the top. Garry coming in second with 0.842kg, 4 species, 1 heaviest and 47.7 points. But once again the juggernaut keeping rolling, Terry had 10.302kg, 7 species, 7 heaviest and 132.6 points take out first once again. Well done lads in trying conditions.

Boat Captain Buckets Reporting Glen Weymouth Annual Kids Comp Saturday 10th December. Next boat comp is Saturday 17th December and demersal closure is over.
14

The men’s was also a very close contest in itself. Top three bags having 6-7 species each. In third position Ryan Red Ferguson with 3.866kg, 6 species, 1 heaviest and 73.7points. Franga once again pipped Red with 1.684kg, 6 species, 2 heaviest and 75.4points. So close Red but so far. In first was Boat Captain Buckets with 4.655Kg, 7 species, 2 heaviest and 91.3 points. Normally I would pipe up about some good catches but it was a really hard day on the water. I think if there was a catch to mention it was the small fish that came out of a sambos mouth at the weigh in - see photos attached. Moving forward to our next comp in December when the demersal ban has lifted, 17th, fingers crossed we get some better weather and fish to go with.

Highlights

This comp had very unusual weather with an ordinary forecast apart from a few pockets of decent weather. Saturday morning was supposed to be good until around 11am but the sea breeze kicked off simultaneously with the 5am start. It wasn’t long until a heap of weed set in up and down the coast. The wind didn’t last long but the damage was done! The area I was fishing was unfishable for about 90 minutes with mountains of weed causing chaos.

Word around the club on Sunday was the fishing was pretty tough! Some great catches were still had though, one in particular was Joe Wettinger’s 829g Tarwhine. Daniel Mallon also bagged a Fatty Flattie weighing in at 1.78kg only 6 grams lighter than previous months winner Locky! Daniel also had the heaviest Tailor with the average size this month much lighter. After several weeks of no mystery fish being caught it was Tyla who’s luck come in with the species being a Black Bream. Tyla ended up with roughly $300 cash from that one fish! Just shows even if you only have a fish or 2 in your bag its always worth weighing in just in case.

John Lebeter had an exceptional bag winning the men’s with 11 species including the heaviest King George Whiting, Sand Whiting, Pike, Herring and Trumpeter. Kiwi come second place with 6 species 2 heaviest and a score of 79 points. Carolyn won the ladies with 2 species, almost a third with her Pike shrinking a cm or 2 to be under the clubs minimum size of 300mm. Belinda and Maree almost had identical score cards with both ladies having 2 species 1 heaviest and 29 points, however Belinda took the silver medal as she had more weight points. Maree took home the bronze! In the vets Locky had a very impressive bag of 7 species 5 of which were the heaviest. Ricko had a respectable second place with 6 species 3 heaviest and 85 points. Lucy won the mini juniors with 2 species both heaviest beating her younger brother Toby who got second place with a Herring. Unfortunately, no juniors managed to weigh a bag in this comp. If you know any juniors at the club make sure you tell to get involved!! A simple herring or wrasse would of earned them 25 smackaroo’s this comp!

Belinda Mallon and Graeme Cole both managed to catch and release good size Snapper. If only they caught them last comp, they could of kept them. I’ll be crossing my fingers and toes we get some half decent weather for this comp! I’ll hopefully be able to weigh in a more respectable bag seeing as I don’t have any other commitments… yet…

UPCOMING EVENTS

Next beach comp is on the weekend of the 21st/22nd of January. Lines in at 5am Saturday and bags need to be at the weigh in station at the club no later than 4pm Sunday.

Beach Fishing Season Summary

December Beach Fishing Comp

Snapper hot on the bite AGAIN during the demersal ban! First beach species officially weighed in by the brag mat and code word alternative. The vets lead the way with exceptional bags!

Highlights

With Christmas only around the corner and all the mayhem that goes with the hectic month of December it might explain the lower-than-expected bags weighed in (15). The weather forecast was much better than November, with most of Saturday and Sunday morning moderate winds and low swell. Saturday arvo/evening winds were a little breezy which would have been comfortable if it wasn’t for the mountain of weed that came with it. It’s hard to beat the warm mornings though when you can crawl out of your swag without having to put on 4 layers of clothes to stay warm!

It was another weekend of stories about all these Pink Snapper that were caught and released. I don’t think I’ve heard of 2 consecutive comps where so many different people have caught Snapper,

it’s just a shame on the timing! Hopefully these good reports of Snapper will continue when we are actually allowed to weigh them in aha! I also had to release some tasty demersal fish (Wirrah Cod) . I also just realised I’m the first person to officially weigh a species in by the brag mat/code word alternative. I caught a Wobbegong Shark which was around 5-7kg and took the picture with the code word “Socceroos” carved into the sand to meet the eligibility criteria. This is a great option for people who may not want to take home some of these species but still get the points for them. The catch and release species are Shark, Wobbygong, Shovelnose, Samson Fish, Mulloway, Amberjack Yellowfin & Black Bream,

The Vets had the most impressive bags this month with Ricko & Locky battling it out for first place. Ricko struck double digits with 10 species with Locky also having a very respectable bag of 8. Colsey ended up with a nice mixed bag of 5 species to take out third place! We only had 2 Mini juniors weigh in but both Crew & sister Boe both catching Herring, with Boe’s the heavier of the two. In the Ladies, Maree was the solo fisherwoman who could catch any fish (I’m sure others fished but didn’t catch) and reaped the rewards. Maree’s single

Heaviest Species Winners & Sponsors

fish was all that was needed to win this month! We didn’t have any juniors weigh in this month, hopefully January we get a few competing. John was victorious again in the men’s with a good mixed bag of fish. Not doing too, bad for someone who wasn’t supposed to be fishing many comps this year! Let’s see if his early lead can be maintained throughout the year when he misses a few!! He’s put some great bags together in the first 3 comps so has laid down the challenge!

With the news just released by the state government means all our future beach comps will not be impacted with any demersal bans. A big win for the beach fishing anglers but definitely something we won’t be bragging about as its not a great overall outcome for the club as a whole. Hopefully these snapper that are getting caught will continue to be caught in the coming months.

The Sailing Report

Season Summary

Our Spring series is in full swing with only one race to go before we wrap up for a well-deserved break for the Christmas and New Year period, in contention for the trophy are Feelin Free and Whim Away with Panache also close to the current leaders.

The weather throughout the Spring series has proved tricky, testing both boats and crew with the weather giving us a variety of conditions.

The last Spring series race is on the 10th December and series honours will be hotly contested between these three boats.

We have completed the second day of racing in the North Coast series competing with Hillarys Yacht Club with 6 races over 3 days left to go.

The standings are tight and we have an even spread of boats from both clubs placing in the top three positions in the races.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Rotto Run: 7th and 8th January 2023

A big thank you to everyone involved to make this happen and an even bigger thank you to the volunteers on the start and support boats.

After Christmas we start our Summer season of racing and before we venture out for the 2023 competitive racing on the social side the sailing section is kicking off the New Year with a ‘Rotto Run’ on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of January 2023.

Historically a couple boats have previously joined up to make the trip and this will be one of our first organised trips as a sailing section to the island and I’m personally very excited for the trip.

Wishing everyone a happy Christmas and a happy New Year and I’ll see you out on the water in 2023.

With the seemingly endless winter months holding on much later than usual it has been a quieter time for members to get out on the water for the summer season. We are looking forward to a full calendar of events both with coastal cruising and river adventures over the next couple of months.

General Business

Over recent months our committee members have been undertaking membership checks at the club during the traditionally busy times. This has been a great opportunity for the committee to engage with our existing members. These checks have also offered the committee a chance to meet with guests who are being signed in and to highlight the benefits of being a member of our club.

Highlights

• Mandoon Winery River Cruise

Wine and Cheese at the cub night

The annual trip to the Mandurah canals to cruise the amazing light show put on by the residents.

A section trip to Jurien Bay for the March long weekend with boating around the close by Islands. Past Events (last month)

With the weather finally starting to look more like spring the Power Boat section headed off for the annual river run up to Mandoon Winery for lunch and refreshments.

Launching at Maylands for 9.30am it was a leisurely 2 hour trip through historic Guilford and the beautiful Swan Valley. It was great we had two new family’s join us for their first outing and by all accounts they thoroughly enjoyed the day. You couldn’t wipe the smile off Graham Hindley’s face when he got some practice grandchild minding in with one of the youngest members on the outing.

I encourage anyone within the club that is looking to join us for these relaxed family outings to please make contact and we will be sure to make you welcome on one of our trips.

The second Powerboat hosted event was held in early November and all sections were invited to attend a wine and cheese night at the club.

It was a serious event with work to be done, the willing participants were required to taste several wines that had made the short list to be available over the club bar in 2023. After the tastings members were required to rate the wines on

24

the supplied score cards so we can get an idea of members tastes.

Great wine tasting feedback was submitted by all those attending, I think many members probably tried wines that they traditionally might not have and enjoyed the experience. Thanks for all those who attended and help make the night a memorable one.

Georgina and the bar staff did a wonderful job of preparing a sumptuous grazing table and a chocolate fountain. A raffle was held to raise funds for the club and this was well supported with six prize packs being given away to the lucky participants.

Omeo wreck dive

Coogee

This was the location of the ORSSC Dive Sections first arranged dive for 2022/23. Thank you for organising, Erick Erhard.

With two support crew, Di and Karrie, 11 neoprene clad divers took to the cool water in this inaugural dive. The wreck was discovered amidst a field of kelp and sea grass, some of the underwater maritime artefacts were found in the sandy trail, even though the visibility wasn’t spectacular. A few schools of fish and a very tasty Flat Head were spotted.

One of Graham Hindley’s, many dive students took the opportunity to complete another module of his Advanced Open Water Scuba Diving TicketNavigation. There was much banter back on shore about all of our navigational skills not just the student!!!! The dive was shallow, max depth 6mts, but proved to be a good opportunity to test the dive gear for the coming season, ahead of contemplating a deeper dive from a boat. Bring on the good diving weather, the cray fish await us, the spear guns are primed, fishing licences are up to date. If yours is not, be prepared to be hassled by fisheries.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Dive cylinders collected from Scuba Care Wangara Beach towel Hoodie costing and expression of interest.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Legacy Camp 8 – 12 Dec

Divers Boat dive weather dependant Preparation For Cray Competition March

For ‘Some’ it was a great opportunity to revisit the essential personal pre-dive checks to gear, zips not done up and valve connections to BC’s secured correctly (Helen). Wetsuits which had apparently shrunk over the winter! Or bodies and grown!! A sight for sore eyes as the mob wrestled, poked, prodded body parts into the confined spaces of the wetsuits, they have a limited space to fit humans into regardless!!!!

Laurie Campbell

To get to the wreck, a dune bridge needs to clambered up and traversed, this proved to be a challenge whist fully kitted up. 11 black bodies frolicking in the shallow water at the base of the steps, fitting fins and shark shields in the soft sand, was sight to be held by some foreign tourists nearby. Lots of good jovial banter to be heard from the 11…

Meanwhile, ashore, the support & Safety crew (also divers) - Karrie, did a head count of the divers on water entry and return, cook Di, ensured the sausages were sizzling on the mobile BBQ (thank you Erik). Top Teamwork. Top Fun morning. So, dust off your dive gear, do your safety checks, get a refresher course, come join the Underwater World Adventures, after all there is more earthly area under water than above on this planet! That’s a fact!!!!

Xmas Party

The 2022 Christmas cheer of 50 OCSSC Members commenced on Saturday November 26th with the Dive Section Christmas Party, with Power Boat, Sailing and Social Section guests tagging along, cos they have the shirts!!!

The fun filled festive evening was hosted by Dave and Keryn Baronet at their beautiful home, thank you graciously.

Amidst an abundance and array of delicious food, an assortment of colourful and bubbly beverages, the Merriment was high. The Rear Dive Commodore - Laurie presented on behalf of the Dive Section acknowledgements of thanks for the Hosts and for the Dive Section meeting scribe of 10yrs - Kate Newall.

And then the shenanigans of Kris Kringle begun, any item is up for stealing 3 times, with the trophy hidden picture frame, yearning to find a new unsuspecting host until 2023!!!

The garden hose went around the table three times, the crystal glasses disappeared to the garden end of the table-never to be seen again, the chocolates were fought over and eventually hidden, screw drivers were bagged, garden gnomes squandered and finally the bell was stolen and went home to some unfortunate household.

Great tomfoolery fun, with up to 50 numbers to be drawn!!! Mary Cutten yielding the hidden frame!!!

The stress and banter of the night may have driven the Host, Dave to commence drinking seen with a beverage in hand and he defiantly decided he wanted to re grow his hair and dye it to a platinum colour!!!! The evening flowed with lovely reflections of the long-term comradery within the bi-sectional gathering and new friendships developing and gaining momentum.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe joyous festive season for 2022.

2023 will be a momentous Club 50th Year of collaborations and change- get ready!!!!!

Kicking off Spring was Oktoberfest - more of a winter’s day in Munich than a spring day in Perth! Needless to say, our stellar members and guests braved the cold wintery day and had a blast.

German Beer flowed so well that all kegs ran out late in the afternoon. This is a record never happened before, so well done to all you die-hard German Beer lovers. The Oompah Band played music throughout the day while DJ Karl Carosella ended the night on a high.

Season Summary

Bali by the Sea has now become the most popular Club Event on our thank you as it continues to grow in popularity. This time around was no exception, with Bali by the Sea 3.0, selling out way before the day.

Bintangs by the Bucket load and Cocktail Shakers at the ready, the sun was shining, staff dressed in traditional Balinese Costumes and the day was ready to commence.

The very special Balinese Dewata Community of Western Australia worked closely with us again, providing mouth-watering traditional Balinese food, dancers, security and entertainment.

DJ Karl and Selina M were playing all throughout the day and night, providing amazing music between all our other wonderful attractions. Once again thankyou to all staff and volunteers who helped make Bali by The Sea 3.0 a huge success.

We also raised $3,453 from the Raffles on the day that was sent to the Let's Help Bali Foundation This group which finds where the needy live and bring them basic care drops of vegetables, rice, and eggs that can sustain an entire village for a month. Thankyou to a very special member who also donated a large sum of their own money towards this cause.

We love bringing our two communities together and celebrating everything we all love about Bali, and look forward to the next one!

Social Report

Season Summary

Hey Everyone

The Social Section has been busy the last month or so putting on a big offsite event and booking in more events for 2023.

The Social Section has also been looking for members to help run events and fundraise through 100 Club and meat raffles and I am pleased to announce that we have an additional 4 new members who are very keen to start planning new events for you guys.

General Business

Over the last few weeks, you would have seen or met a few of our committee members on Friday and Sunday afternoons (including me!) during peak times undertaking membership checks at the Club door. We appreciate everyone's patience with us as we checked memberships and appreciate everyone being so supportive. We received a lot of good feedback from members in undertaking checks which was great to hear. In other news, the Club underwent a small outdoor renovation with the new playground for the kids.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We have a couple events coming up in the new year, starting with a ‘Day at the Races’ event in March, where members will be able to enjoy a great day at Ascot Racecourse. This has been a very popular event in the past, so when this gets advertised, we recommend jumping on it quick!

We're also working closely with the Angling Section to organise a day out Skeet Shooting which should be great fun and a unique experience. Numbers for this event would be very limited so keep an eye out on the Facebook page.

The Club also has a few events in the pipeline for 2023, including Australia Day which is a very popular event for families.

Lastly, if you’re interested in getting involved in the Social Section or have an event idea you would like us to look at please contact me at social@orssc.asn.au.

Highlights

The Social Section is aiming to run around 4 events per year. We just kicked off with the Swan Valley Brew Tour in November and next up is the Day at the Races at Ascot in March. We also have two larger events being held at the Club including the popular Quiz Night in May and Bogan Bingo in July.

Any important information?

By now you would have seen members from each Section running meat raffles on Sundays with meat trays from the local butcher CJ's in Beaumaris. The Social Section will be around some Sunday afternoons running 100 Club over the busy summer months so keep an eye out for us.

As always, the RSL will have their meat raffle on the last Sunday of each month, so be sure to get down and support them.

Past Events (last month)

The Social Section headed out on the Swan Valley Brew Tour on Saturday, 26 November. We had a brilliant day out in some beautiful weather. We started the day at 11am at the Swan Valley Brewery where we had a large bar tab where members and their guests could have glasses of local wines and sparkling, tap beers and beef tasting paddles which seemed to be very popular for 3 hours. We were also given large platters of nibbles including garlic bread, meatballs, honey soy chicken tenders and arancini balls.

We then moved onto Mash Brewery where we had some more finger food and were also greeting with some live music. A few of our members couldn't help but hit the dance floor. We had a couple hours there enjoying the sunshine and music before heading back to the Club for a few more cold ones!

It was an extremely successful day, everyone had a great time and we received a lot of positive feedback. Members were mostly stoked with the value for money for everything that was including on the day, but also that members were given priority which is something the Social Section will keep doing moving forward.

Plenty of photos were taken on the day including the ones in this issue of the TIDE magazine. You'll be able to see more on the TV above the Social Sections whiteboard in the main bar.
