AUGUST 2023 AN ORCHARD LAKE COUNTRY CLUB PUBLICATION
Inside

THE BOARD CORNER

Dear Members,

The club is enjoying a terrific season with remarkable weather and well-attended events. The recent Town Hall meeting to discuss the results of the strategic planning survey generated a lot of positive discussion about the club's future. The strategic plan will serve as the framework for continuing our Club’s momentum in building a stronger, sustainable future. It will identify key initiatives we must accomplish to meet our Mission for a family focused membership and to continue to reflect our stated Vision and Values.

We are working with the McMahon Group in developing and refining the Strategic plan. We hope to have an initial draft completed in the next several weeks. This will include developing specific Action Plans to address the key initiatives to deliver a compelling membership experience, provide strategic governance and empowered management, as well as financial stewardship. The Board of Governors will communicate the highlights of our planning process to the membership and will report on our progress toward the goals. We expect the positive momentum to continue throughout the second half of the year.

As we approach our 100-year anniversary, we are proud to reflect on our strong tradition of family and values. For over 97 years OLCC has been a place where families create memories and form lifelong friendships. Our mission and vision statements ensure that we continue to focus on what is most important to our members. Our Strategic Planning Survey confirmed that our mission and vision statements are still relevant and important to our membership. OLCC is committed to upholding its set of core values: Family Focused - Fiscal Responsibility, Excellence – Integrity – Inclusivity –Shared Passion. This embodies our traditions of respect, integrity, sportsmanship, and excellence. We are proud that our members exemplify these core values at the Club and in the community. These values make it easier for us to connect with each other and build relationships. Our traditions provide a sense of continuity, and it helps to keep OLCC grounded in its history.

With thoughtful planning and a commitment to tradition and values, we are confident we will remain a premier family-focused club in the Midwest for many years to come. As we move forward, we welcome feedback from our members to ensure we stay true to our mission and vision.

We look forward to creating many more memories together!

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The Memories We Create at Orchard Lake

I can't believe it's August already - time truly does fly when we're having such a wonderful time. The summer has been overflowing with activities and there's still so much more in store for us.

Looking back, I can't help but recall the myriad of exciting events we've enjoyed. The Tin Lizzie Member Tournament, multiple thrilling regattas, and our diverse junior sports programs were merely the beginning. Our men and women's golf league, the memorable Smoke on the Water Fireworks Night, and the spirited Pink Shirt Invitational were just a few more highlights. The Players and Blue Coat Tournaments added their own charm to this incredible season.

Our tennis, pickleball, and paddle courts have been bustling with countless matches, complemented by the delightful Apple Island Swim and Mini Meet. Our Club has also been the backdrop for numerous member weddings, showers, family functions, and milestone celebrations. Not to forget our very first town hall of the season, during which we began drafting our strategic plan for the future.

As we transition into August, we have a vibrant line-up of activities. We're eagerly anticipating all the Club Championships, the Member Caddie Tournament, and the End of Summer Party. We're also hosting two family campouts – one in August and another in September. Add to this the quintessential Michigan summer days spent on the golf course, at the pool, on the beach, dining, or just enjoying a BBQ at the picnic grove - there's no shortage of ways to savor the rest of the season with our loved ones and our Club community.

Each memory created here at Orchard Lake Country Club is a testament to the relentless efforts of our dedicated staff, who consistently strive to deliver the best membership experience in the Midwest. I encourage you to extend your appreciation to our team members when you see them around - a simple "Thank You" goes a long way!

Looking forward to seeing you around the Club soon,

Golf Update

Heading into August and Competition Results

We hope you and your family are enjoying the late summer at Orchard Lake! As we look ahead to August, family programming takes center stage as we have some new events on the books for our members to enjoy prior to the return of the school year. All members are encouraged to join us for Club Championship Weekend, August 11-13, where we’ll gather men, women, juniors and our young adults for a stroke play event and recognize our top players in both gross and net divisions.

The Orchard Lake Member-Professional, aka the Carp Invitational, follows on August 17, and pairs foursomes of men with invited club professionals from the area for an enjoyable day of golf with proceeds benefitting the Evans Scholar Foundation and The First Tee of Greater Detroit. The Family Scramble – another new event – follows on August 20. All ages are welcome for a very casual, “outside the box” event sure to provide fun memories and a great time for all.

The Ralph Dailey is our net Senior Club Championship and takes place on August 22-23, with divisions sorted by player ages between freshmen (ages 50-59), sophomores (ages 60-69), juniors (ages 70-79), and seniors (ages 80 and up). The Husband & Wife Championship is always fun, Women’s Charity Event, and second Nine, Wine & Dine all line up through the remainder of the month.

Looking further ahead, keep an eye on your inboxes for September updates on After School Golf, The Ward Cup, the Labor Day edition of Red, White & Blue, and more. There’s plenty more on tap for the remainder of the season and we’re looking forward to sharing it all with you!

OLCC and First Tee – Greater Detroit

This season Orchard Lake Country Club is supporting First Tee – Greater Detroit, a youth development organization that uses golf to teach local youth critical life skills and traits such as honesty, integrity, perseverance, resiliency and self-confidence. On June 27th, the club was part of a very unique and special experience for First Tee participant Shaun Horne.

OLCC hosted Shaun and Morgan Hoffmann for a few holes of golf that were filmed as part of a special project that Morgan is working on, which will detail the lives of youth golfers.

Morgan is a professional golfer, Greyson co-founder, the former #1 amateur in the world and a three-time All-American at Oklahoma State University. Morgan was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy and is today a health and wellness advocate who has been able to transform his personal health through natural healing modalities. Two-time Emmy award winning filmmaker Stephen McGee is the filmmaker working with Morgan and his team.

For Shaun, who is an aspiring collegiate golfer, the chance to meet and play golf with Morgan was a rare opportunity. OLCC was thrilled to be part of this wonderful and life-changing experience and work with First Tee – Greater Detroit to make it happen. Thank you to Aaron and his team who got the course ready earlier than usual and also helped make sure the day went smoothly.

OLCC GOLF EVANS SCHOLAR HISTORY & PLAQUE

The Evans Scholars Foundation - administered by the Western Golf Association - has been a part of the Orchard Lake caddie program for over 60 years. In recognition of this history and in celebration both of those who have earned the scholarships and those who have so generously contributed, the club is purchasing a physical plaque to be displayed near the Golf Shop. We hope this plaque will instill a sense of pride in this life-changing program and our participation within it.

Additionally, we will be profiling some of the 56 Orchard Lake caddies – past and present – who have become Evans Scholars, with some meaningful updates on their lives and careers. Keep an eye out for more profiles in future Birchbarks, and if you may be interested in making a donation for the plaque or learning more about the Evans Scholars Foundation, please contact Brian Sleeman. Thank you all for your efforts and generosity!

Peak Season Tennis in August at Orchard Lake

August at Orchard Lake Country Club means peak tennis season. All of the training that has been put in on the courts is going to pay off during our Junior Interclub Finals coming up this August 6th-8th. We are aiming to knock out last year's first place finisher, Pine Lake, and take back our title. As for the adult tennis program, classes have been going great and we can't wait to continue seeing you all out on the courts. We encourage players of all levels to participate in our variety of group programs! Please see more details below.

We have been using orchardlakecountryclub.com as our sign-up website this year. You can see all of our available class times and dates on the calendar and sign up on there as well. The classes for the month of August are also listed below. Please keep in mind a few time changes due to our Junior Camp Schedule. These time changes will go into effect starting the week of August 14th. The first two weeks of August will be the same class times as we have been running in the months of June and July.
