The word ‘mum’ means something different to everyone. For some, it refers to the woman who birthed and raised us. For others, it might be a title we are fortunate enough to hold. For me, it refers to the person who raised me into the woman I am today and the one I will be tomorrow (and the next day)

Mums take many different shapes and forms. Some of us associate the term with our birth mum, some with foster mums and some with mother figures. Others might hold the title of mum (or grandmother!), whether that be to a human child or a fur baby. No matter what it means to you, I’m sure we can all agree this role is one that plays a massive part in our lives.

I am one of the lucky few people who can say that my mum is my best friend, as she has been by my side from day one. From fighting a (losing) battle with identical twins who refused to sleep as babies to then fighting (again) a losing battle trying to get that same sleepless baby out of bed in the morning to go to school, my mum is someone I have the utmost respect and admiration for.

Don’t get me wrong; there have been times in my teenage years when I thought I was too ‘cool’ to be seen with my mum (if you look at any photo of me, I’m sure you’ll be as confused as I am as to why I thought I was cool). Other times, our stubbornness pitted us in a silent battle of who would cave and say sorry first (ironically, I inherited the stubbornness from her).

So, when it comes to Mother’s Day, I’m often left with the overwhelmingly impossible task of what to get the most important woman in my life to show her how much I care. How can I possibly find something that shows her how much I appreciate everything she’s ever done for me? How can I find something that will thank her for wiping away my tears? For all the belly laughs? For everything I could never put into words - no matter how hard I try - how much she means to me?

Fortunately, I’ve been able to work with the Trierra team to curate our very first Mother’s Day Gift Guide. This extra special edition of the guide features businesses handpicked by us, whose products are made with love.

They are all businesses whose values closely align with ours and are opportunities for us to spoil the ones who matter in the most eco-friendly way because, at the end of the day, it’s Mother Earth we need to celebrate alongside our loved ones.

This Mother’s Day, make your gift to your mum a gift to Mother Earth and shop sustainably.

From all of us at Trierra, Happy Mother’s Day and happy shopping!

What to Buy a First-Time Mum This Mother’s Day

Becoming a mum for the first time is an experience like no other. While it’s different for everyone, it’s typically a mixture of joy and love, but it may also be riddled with overwhelm and anxiety.

In 2022, I became a first-time mum myself. It’s been a wild ride, and I’ve had so many instances where I’ve thought, “If only I knew that beforehand.”

The biggest learning was the discovery of matrescence – the physical, emotional, hormonal, and social transition to becoming a mother. For some women, myself included, this shift can be intense and, at times, isolating and overwhelming.

While I can’t speak for all new mothers if I think back in particular to those first few months of parenthood, here are some of the things I would have liked to have received.

Cleaning service: Keeping a house clean during a newborn bubble can be a real

struggle. At times, I dreamed of having a cleaner come in to ease the pressure.

A quick Google search can bring up an eco-friendly cleaner like Dustpan & Brush near you.

Good quality linen: Sleep is one of the most important things you need to keep you going when you have a baby. That means creating a relaxing space is essential. I have a thing for good quality linen.

Check out Plantchester, the world’s first plastic-free bedding company – made from plants! They’re featured in this gift guide and are offering 15% off when you use the code oracoeco at checkout.

Sentimental gifts: I grow more and more besotted with my baby every single day. I would and (would still love, hint, hint) a sentimental gift that allows me to carry a symbol of my child with me everywhere I go.

There are a range of businesses that offer this, but you can’t go wrong with jewellery! There are some great companies out there that can create fingerprint or nameplate necklaces.

Haircare: The one thing that can always make me feel better about myself is maintaining my wild mane! A visit to the salon typically takes me up to six hours, so it’s not always practical. However, quality haircare like LoCou can make a world of difference. If you use the code oracoeco, you can save 10%.

5 Things to Do with Mum on Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day, it’s time to treat your mum or mother figure in your life! If you’re looking to plan a day she won’t forget, here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Breakfast in bed

Get mum’s day off to a great start by letting her wake up to the sweet, fragrant smell of pancakes and a cuppa in bed. Take the stress off mum and let her enjoy a nice, cooked brekky from the comfort of her covers!

2. Picnic

Keeping with the food trend, why not plan a picnic? Start with a nice walk to your local park or indulge in a scenic stroll until you find the ideal spot to set up. Make sure you pack mum’s favourite treats and a picnic rug! Then sit back, relax, and enjoy the fresh air.

3. Winery

If your mum knows her Pinot from her Pino Grigio, why not take her to the local winery? Grab some lunch and taste all

they have to offer and then walk it off between the vineyards while you take some family pics!

P.S. Make sure mum isn’t the designated driver today!

4. Spa day

Sometimes, mum needs a moment to herself to relax. If she’s due for some pampering, head down to your nearest hot springs or spa salon. Get a massage, manicure, or pedicure and relax with mum.

5. Surprise day trip

Catch mum off-guard with a spontaneous family day trip somewhere nearby. Plan the day accordingly so you’re not entirely winging Mother’s Day. This might mean making a reservation at a lovely cafe or restaurant and looking at how to get there well in advance.

Give mum everything she deserves this Mother’s Day and celebrate together as a family!

How a Mother’s Love is Helping Build a Legacy

If you told Kay 10 years ago that she would be a domestic violence survivor, mother, holistic health practitioner, multi-award-winning entrepreneur, and mental health advocate, she might not have believed you. But today, Kay is using her past trauma to share her story and leave a legacy.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne, Kay struggled. During the two-and-a-half-year period, she only saw her daughter – who lives overseas because of a complicated custody law - twice, and she knew she had to do something to bring her out of the rut she felt herself falling into.

Using her background in holistic health and a drive to help other women, Kay created Inka Skincare Apothecary – an organic beauty brand where 100% of profits are pledged to helping women and children escape domestic violence.

Not only that, but Inka gives domestic violence escapees a job opportunity where Kay teaches them skills that empower them and help to build them back up. In its two years, Inka has directly helped 7,000 women and children in need through partnerships with charities like St Kilda Mums and Pinchapoo.

Despite her past trauma, Kay is using Inka to offer a safe space for women that are victims of domestic violence. She knows first-hand what it’s like to feel like your dignity has been stripped away and how hard it can be to leave a violent home – especially when children are involved.

Kay knows that there are a lot of women suffering in silence and wants these women to know that they have the strength to get through this;

tunnel.

It’s through Inka that Kay hopes to leave a positive mark on the world by helping #ChangeTheEnding for women and children escaping violence and working to #EndHygeinePoverty in Australia.

More Than a Mother

Mother’s Day is a special day of the year. It’s where we celebrate one of the most important roles in our lives - the motherly figure. For some of us, this might be a nod to our birth mums, but for a lot of people, it recognises many other types of mother figures.

Around this time every year, we are bombarded with promotional content surrounding Mother’s Day. We understand the importance of celebrating all that mums do, but we also recognise that this day can be challenging for many individuals for various reasons.

Many of us are fortunate enough to have non-biological mother figures in our lives to appreciate. Whether it’s your step-mum, the school nurse who always made you feel better, that one teacher who changed your life, your foster mum who took you in, the office mum who brings in treats every week, or the friend group’s designated mum who makes sure everyone’s okay on a night out – most of us have got someone who’s like a mother to us.

The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary defines a mother as “a female parent of a child or animal; a person who is acting as a mother to a child.

It’s about those with motherly qualities rather than stereotypical concepts of who a mother is.

So, to those who have lost their mothers, mothers who have lost their children, individuals who never had a mother, or have chosen not to become mothers. To those who yearn to become mothers, those with strained relationships, and those with fulfilling relationships. To all mothers, stepmothers, new

mothers, grandmothers, pet mothers, adoptive mothers, single mothers, and everyone in between, happy Mother’s Day!

Black is the New Blonde: The New Shampoo That’s Kind to the Earth

Finding the perfect shampoo is tricky for anyone. Thin hair, thick hair, dry hair, oily hair - the list is endless. Throw in colours and tones, and finding something that caters to your locks might feel downright impossible. Well, for all of the blondies out there - look no further! A revolutionary new shampoo has hit the market and might just be the answer to all your wishes.

After three years and 58 formulation attempts, International Master Colourist, Melissa, has created the first-ever black shampoo to add to her LoCou hair product range. The unique scientific formula is specially formulated to tone the brassiness out of your hair whilst filling, toning and cleaning for a fresher, brighter blonde.

With so many products on the market, many are curious about why black is better than purple. The answer?

LoCou’s black shampoo fills and tones while having a base foundation to it. The formula uses primary colours, rather than purple, that can build up in lightened hair and make it appear darker. From the very first wash, you’ll notice a less yellow colour and brighter results. The hemp seed extract also helps to restore and strengthen hair while giving it a glossy finish.

Melissa is passionate about the environment, which is evident in her products. Her haircare range combines nature, science and hair while remaining ethical, cruelty-free and sustainable. Combined with sustainable packaging and refill options, the entire LoCou range is free from nasties, including silicone, sulphates, parabens, and a whole host of other ingredients we can’t pronounce!

With her Mount Eliza salon and zero-waste hair care, Melissa strives to make an impact and encourages others to experience #TheLoCouDifference. If you’re ready to find your new favourite shampoo or want to spoil mum with a trip to the salon this Mother’s Day, look no further than LoCou – the brand that loves your hair and is kind to Mother Earth.

Fig, salted caramel and dark chocolate dessert pizza

I love dessert pizzas, and they are a great way to celebrate seasonal produce. This one balances the sweetness of delicious juicy figs with salted caramel and bitter dark chocolate, with a touch of orange zest for freshness and rosemary to ground it all. It is the perfect dessert to complete a pizza night!

Makes 4 pizzas

Ingredients

• Dough

• 7 g dried yeast

• 325 ml lukewarm water

• 1 tsp sugar

• 500 g ‘00’ bread flour

• 1 tbsp salt

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• Sweet béchamel

• 2 tbsp vegan butter

• 2 tbsp plain flour

• 1 cup plant-based milk

• 1 tbsp maple syrup (or sugar)

• pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)

• Salted caramel

• 4 tbsp vegan butter

• 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1 cup coconut cream

• 1/2 tsp salt

Toppings

• 15 or so ripe figs, stems removed and sliced horizontally in half

• 1 1/2 cups vegan dark

• chocolate chips

• freshly grated zest of an orange

• 1/2 tsp finely chopped rosemary

• 2 tbsp hemp seeds, pine nuts or other seeds, toasted (optional)

Method

1. In a jug, combine the yeast, water and sugar. Leave for 10 minutes to ensure the yeast is active – if it becomes frothy, it’s good to go; if not, best to start again with fresh yeast.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt and make a well in the centre. Stir through the yeast mixture and turn out onto a floured surface. Knead lightly into a ball and return to the bowl. Rub the top with olive oil to prevent it drying out and leave in a warm place for about 2 hours until it roughly doubles in size.

3. When ready to make your pizzas, knock back the now large ball of dough and knead again for 1–2 minutes. Shape it into a log and divide into four equal sections. Roll each into a ball and cover while you

make the sauces, and preheat the oven to its hottest setting, about 220–240˚C.

4. For the sweet béchamel, in a small saucepan, melt the butter and stir in the flour to form a paste. Slowly add the milk, whisking continuously, then add the maple syrup and nutmeg, if using. Whisk until thick then set aside.

5. For the salted caramel, melt the butter and sugar in a small saucepan on a medium heat until they form a thick sauce. Now reduce the heat and whisk in the coconut cream and salt until it thickens slightly, then set aside to thicken more as it cools.

6. Roll out a dough ball into a thin base and place on a pizza or baking tray. Spread a thin layer of the sweet béchamel across the base, followed by some sliced figs, chocolate chips and a drizzle of salted caramel over the top. Repeat for other pizzas then place in the hot oven for about 10 minutes.

7. Before serving, sprinkle with orange zest, rosemary and toasted seeds, if using.

Cooking with Love (and Plants!) This Mother’s Day

Our co-founder, Jessica, recently had the opportunity to speak with singer-songwriter and Cordon Bleu–qualified chef Katie White in the lead up to the release of her book, The Seasonal Vegan.

Featuring 100+ hearty and mouthwatering plant-based recipes that are seasonal, low-waste and easy, The Seasonal Vegan is for anyone who wants to eat from the heart and live a more sustainable life – regardless of whether they are vegan.

Here are some of the takeaways from our chat with Katie.

Jessica: Whatisadayinthelifeof Katieliketypically?

Katie: Basically, my life changes with the seasons. My favourite parts of the day are visiting my chickens in the orchard and picking fruit. I love bringing those fruits into the kitchen, making jam with the excess, planning a feast for some friends, setting it up, and

celebrating the abundant produce at that time. The last six months have been great because it’s summer, so produce is around. I mean, that’s what really fuels my joy and joy and fuels life. So, it’s really basic stuff. But for me, that’s what I get the most out of.

Jessica: Whatdifferencedoyouthink growingyourowningredientsmakes whencookingadish?

Katie: I am so passionate about growing food. Growing and harvesting food is one of my favourite things to do in life. It just comes naturally to me because I’ve grown up around it, and it’s just become my passion anyway - even separately from that - and it keeps me connected to nature. By growing the food and then cooking it and sharing it, you’re proud. You can take pride in being part of that dish’s whole story from the beginning.

That aside, it’s still sustainable and great to go to a farmers’ market – for example - and get seasonal produce. So, it’s just a bonus to grow it yourself. But also flavour-wise, food fresh out of the garden will taste a lot better and have better textures as well. So, you will be able to make the best version of that dish if the produce has been freshly picked or at least as close to it as possible.

Beyond that, it just makes sense. For me, it’s just almost instinctive. It’s so natural, like even in tribal days or caveman days; there was no other

Ethical Mother’s Day Gift Guide / 2023

option. So, it’s in our DNA to have fresh produce that we either harvested, grew or in some way were connected to.

But equally, that’s idealistic, and I’m completely aware that a lot of the world can’t grow their own produce, and that’s also okay. There is a place for good quality grocers in cities and people that connect the farmer to the consumer. But if we can have that joy of growing things in our life, whether that even just be a pot of basil or if you are lucky to have a little backyard in a city, you could actually grow a lot of food in a very small space, if we’re talking plant foods. And I think the benefits to people’s mental health, aside from that, even if that’s all they’re getting from it, it’s great to have a little connection with their food.

Jessica: 10yearsago,cookingavegan recipeoftenrequiredextensivetrips tovarioushealthfoodstorestofind little-knowningredients.HowdoesThe SeasonalVegancombatthis?

Katie: I am quite proud that I have actively made my work and the food within accessible for everybody.

That’s something I really hope makes my work stand out because I totally agree, and that’s the awesome thing. It’s not necessary to have a fantastic, fairly gourmet plant-based diet. My book has, I hope, communicated that.

In the beginning, there is a section with a few special ingredients, but they’re all

available at major supermarkets. So, there’s nothing in the book that is only available at a health shop, and all the recipes are based around produce. At their very core, it’s about the produce –about the cauliflower or the silverbeet and the things we’re doing to lift that produce up and make it shine as simply as possible most of the time.

Jessica: InthespiritofMother’sDay, whatrecipeinTheSeasonalVegan doyourecommendlittlekidscook withmum?

Katie: A lot of the recipes in the book are relevant because I have tried to keep them as easy as possible but

with a bit of a special twist. I know that a lot of my friends with kids have really loved my baked bean recipe because kids love baked beans, and it’s basically three ingredients. There’s a homemade baked bean recipe in there, which tastes exactly like the canned ones, but with only three ingredients instead of maybe seven or something, which is in the standard baked beans. Older kids can easily make it themselves as well because it’s so simple. I also recommend the chocolate mousse because it’s everything in a blender or smoothie maker - they just need to blitz it up and eat it! It will make a kid feel like they’re eating yummy foods - like they’re having what their friends might have or are still getting treats - but actually, they’re getting tofu. Like it’s still a treat food – a smooth, indulgent, chocolatelike dessert, but it’s a massive dose of protein, calcium, and all the other things that come with tofu. So that’s a nice one to note as well.

Jessica: Lastly,what’syourfavourite recipefromTheSeasonalVegan?

Katie: I would say that my favourites, if I can have two, are the chocolate Jaffa tart, and my favourite savoury meal is my fig pasta, which is a pretty quirky one, but it’s definitely my favourite.

It was such a pleasure speaking with Katie, as she has a wealth of knowledge to share. Her new book, The Seasonal Vegan, is a truly accessible way to introduce more delicious plant-based meals into your diet regardless of where you are on your food journey.

Available from April 26, you can pre-order The Seasonal Vegan for a beautiful gift for mum this Mother’s Day.

Alternatively, you can give mum an early Mother’s Day present with a ticket to one of Katie’s cooking classes in Melbourne or Sydney. Click here for more info.
