In 2022, we launched our inaugural Eco Gift Guide. We’re proud to say we’ve expanded our focus this year to include Responsible businesses. While we remain passionate about the environment and sustainability, we also know there are many ways a business can do ‘better.’ Conscious consumption is about engaging in the economy with more awareness of how your choices impact the environment and society as a whole. We’re embracing this movement in every way. While many businesses found the post-pandemic period challenging, things have been even more dire this year for many. According to the ABS, In the four years between June 2019 and June 2023, 35 per cent of all Australian businesses closed their doors for good. Small businesses are at an even greater risk of collapse. While we don’t want to be doom and gloom, particularly during what is meant to be the festive season, we want to encourage everyone who reads this Guide to embrace Responsible businesses. Think about supporting small and locally made businesses wherever possible, not just during the holiday season but throughout the whole year. We’ve carefully curated our Responsible Gift Guide to feature 50 incredible businesses. There is a helpful legend on the following page to help you determine the practices of each business and how they might align with your own beliefs and values. Gardening Australia’s Hannah Moloney leads a home-grown food revolution with new book If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at growing your own food, this is your sign. Hannah Moloney’s new book, Good Life Growing, is the perfect present this Christmas. Followed by leafy greens and fresh sprouts on your kitchen bench these are quick to grow and a million times tastier than most greens from the local shops. Growing both herbs and greens is also super economical as they’re often pricey at the shops and never as good a quality as the ones you’ll grow yourself.” We asked Hannah whether it’s worth involving the kids in your edible garden. “When it comes to edible gardening, kids are naturals and can very quickly wrap their heads, hearts, and hands around how to grow food. They are especially fantastic at harvesting and eating food! It gives them so much joy and pride to be connected to where their food comes from. The more we can get them out there, the better.” Aside from Hannah’s new book, she suggested gifting the budding gardener “some seeds to get you started and a compost system to make sure you’re nourishing soil health” this Christmas.
