Click Frenzy, Black Friday and Cyber Monday it’s all sales, sales, sales, and it can be challenging for even the most conscious consumers to not get caught up in the moment.

Cancelling or boycotting holiday sales isn’t possible for some businesses. Many have been hit hard the past few years with multiple lockdowns and covid-related restrictions and some are still playing catch up. That aside, giving over the holiday season provides both the giver and receiver with joy.

As a team, we posed the question, how can we make a difference this year? We knew we still wanted to buy gifts for our loved ones, as well as to support small businesses, however, we wanted to ensure we were spending our money on businesses whose practices aligned with our own and so, the Eco Holiday Gift Guide was born.

Our first edition is filled with a range of offers from some incredible businesses and change-makers as well as content to help guide you in creating some sustainable holiday traditions.

We know how hard it is when you want to be all things to all people. We understand that while most businesses want to do the best that they can, it’s simply not possible in some instances to do everything. We’ve developed a helpful eco legend on the right to help you determine the practices of each business. Please review this carefully along with the business’s website to help you choose businesses whose values align with your own.

This is more than another gift guide. It’s about being more conscious over the holiday period, a time when humanity often consumes with abundance.

Amber Burns & Georgie Debenham started The Toothbrush Project after spending a few months of their gap year in rural Cambodia. While volunteering in a Cambodian school, they found limited access to dental hygiene had a flow on effect on the overall health and wellbeing of the children. Headaches and earaches were identified as one reason for reduced school attendance and so, The Toothbrush Project was born.

The Magic Behind the Holiday Season

At Christmas, not everyone is decking their halls in boughs of holly. In fact, there are plenty of holidays celebrated worldwide from November to January. Although our news feeds may be flooded with Santa and stockings, there are other holidays playing out across the globe.

Hanukkah

Hanukkah refers to an important holiday in the Jewish calendar. Also known as Chanukah or the Festival of Lights, this religious tradition is an eight-day festival that commemorating rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt. The celebrations include eating traditional food, lighting of the menorah and eight nights of games and gifts!

Kwanzaa

From December 26 to January 1, Kwanzaa celebrates African culture and community. The term Kwanzaa refers to “the first fruit of the harvest” in Swahili and is a time to focus on traditional African family values. It is based upon the celebration of seven principles or beliefs called the Nguzo Saba and celebrates traits such as collective work, creativity, and purpose. Communities join with feasts, music, dance, and a continued commitment to cultural values.

Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy’s Day)

Santa Lucia or Saint Lucy’s Day falls on December 13 every year. This feast day in the Christian calendar celebrates

Saint Lucy - a martyr who is seen as a figure of light in the darkest part of the year. The day is marked by atmospheric concerts and processions, featuring singers dressed in white and wearing headdresses featuring actual flickering candles. A girl is selected to represent Saint Lucy and leads the procession through town, singing traditional songs.

Omisoka

Omisoka is the Japanese New Year and is celebrated on December 31. In Japanese culture, Omisoka is considered one of the most important holidays, second only to January 1 (Shogatsu). This celebration commemorates the end of an old year and beginning of the new one, with people hosting Bonenkai parties intended to help forget the past year. Cards and gifts are sent to friends and family and families gather for one last time in the old year to have a bowl of toshikoshi-soba or toshikoshi-udon - a tradition based on eating the long noodles to cross over from one year to the next.

Yuletide

Yuletide or Yule is an ancient Pagan celebration that technically falls within the Winter Solstice. In ancient time, people marked Yule by lighting a huge log in a bonfire and spending the long night outdoors. The custom of log burning is still practised today, but most people also mark this occasion by building a Yule altar, making an evergreen Yule wreath, or giving back to Mother Nature. Candlelit dinners and Yule tree decorations are also common, as are exchanging of naturebased gifts.

Deliciously vegan! Our Favourite Vegan Holiday Substitutes

There has never been a better time to practice making simple vegan substitutes than the holidays! Whether you consider yourself a vegan foodie and want to impress your family with amazing vegan banquets or are trying to slowly introduce plantbased alternatives to your loved ones, here is a list of our favourite vegan holiday substitutes for your upcoming family gatherings.

1. Swap to plant-based butter and milk for your mashed potatoes.

2. You can make a rich, delicious gravy with dark miso and tahini! Woollies and Coles also have some ready-to-eat vegan gravy (‘Celebrate Vegan’ is our recommendation).

3. Vegan whipped cream might sound like a novelty but believe it or not, you can purchase it in your local supermarket! Otherwise, if you are a DIY kinda person, you can make your own with one single ingredient: full-fat coconut milk!

4. Dandies vegan marshmallows are our absolute favourite! Get the big chunky ones though, not the little ones.

5. There is a wide variety of vegan ice creams available in stores. However, if you are looking for a complementary vegan ice cream for your dessert, our go-to is the PANA organic Vanilla bean ice cream.

6. Substitute your beef/chicken stock with veggie stock for your soups, stews, risotto, etc.

7. For the stuffing lovers, make a vegan stuffing by swapping a couple of ingredients (vegan butter and stock) from your favourite recipe. Some store brands are also ‘accidentally vegan’ so just check your favourite and avoid ingredients like chicken broth.

8. We are big fans of Plantitude’s vegan meringues but hurry! These tend to sell out quite fast.

9. Another supermarket favourite is the Nakula’s plant-based custard. It comes in vanilla and brandy flavours, get in quick before it goes!

Shop Sustainably for Kids without Dwindling their Holiday Excitement

Shopping sustainably and ethically matters, no matter what age you are. As an adult you can usually grasp the serious challenges mass consumerism presents including environmental impacts. It can be a little more difficult to explain to children, especially during Christmas when mass marketing is everywhere. It’s like trying to avoid pasta sauce around the sides of your mouth when eating spaghetti, you just can’t!

Instead of throwing heavy topics around, which can involve big words and be super confusing, you can help your children gauge the value of their gifts in simple terms. This could include explaining to them that someone has worked very hard to make what we buy, they deserve to be paid fairly for their work and some things we buy cause pollution. This can encourage them to be more conscious when scribbling down their holiday wish lists.

You could even let them be a part of the decisionmaking by asking them, “this company does not treat our beautiful environment well, we should respect the amazing trees and fresh air around us, should we buy from them?”. This allows them to be conscious on their own! This is important because by the age of three your children can grasp basic money concepts, and by seven kids develop many life-long shopping habits

Teaching kids the value of their gifts and where they come from doesn’t have to mean the excitement of the holidays is dwindled. You can still get new items; you’re just being conscious not to mindlessly consume! After all, who wants to pick up a bunch of toys off the floor when you can pick up a few?

Christmas Traditions: But Make Them Eco!

As children, many of us grew up putting plastic tinsel on the Christmas tree, popping Christmas crackers for those small plastic toys that interested us for five minutes and unwrapping mountains of presents.

Around the world, waste at Christmas increases significantly - Australia is no exception with:

• $1 billion spent on new toys and an alarming 26.8 million toys thrown away.

• Aussies using 150,000kms of wrapping paper.

• Nearly 5 million tonnes of food going straight to landfill.

• An overall increase of 30% in waste output.

However, as the world shifts to deal with the climate crisis, there are things we can do this Christmas to ensure the snow at the North Pole doesn’t melt.

Use eco-friendly decorations

Avoid plastic decorations like tinsel and baubles. Opt for eco-friendly alternatives made of sustainable materials, or better yet - make your own out of recycled items.
