While we may not think of Easter in the same way as Christmas, spending is on the rise. Last year, research undertaken by Roy Morgan and the Australian Retailers Association found 73% of Australians said they planned on buying easter food like hot cross buns, chocolates and easter eggs, spending an average of $100 on these items with nearly $1.5 billion to be spent in total.
Additionally, over 4 million Australians planned a trip away over Easter in 2022. We can only expect those figures to grow this year with less travel restrictions in place.
It’s easy to condemn the consumerism around our holiday periods. But the reality is, we get just as much, if not more joy in giving gifts to our loved ones as we do receiving them.
While many of us may do the typical chocolate exchange, if we take a minute to consider our actions, we may be surprised. It’s not just ‘giving’ Easter eggs. It’s creating and embracing memories and traditions. It’s spending time with our loved ones, and it may be something as simple as taking time out of our busy schedules to take a minute and invest in self-care.
With this in mind, we’ve created our first annual Ethical Easter Gift Guide. It’s a curation of incredible vegan and ethically created quality chocolate treats and a few other select Easter goodies to share and enjoy with loved ones.
Don’t feel guilty if you want to indulge in some treats this Easter but remember that you can make plenty of ethical choices as a consumer.
Hop to it, and have a happy Easter!

Chocolate on Purpose: Creating Solutions with Real Impact
BY ELLIE TRAVICA
Sometimes, the food we eat has a much deeper meaning than we realise. While it’s fun to eat chocolate for breakfast without being judged this Easter, plenty of businesses are putting in the hard yards to ensure that we start to understand the stories behind the food.
Chocolate on Purpose was founded by Fiona - a proud Wiradyuri woman of the Bila Bula (Belubula River) –with a vision to share culture through storytelling with chocolate, educating on the traditional use of the botanicals by our First Nations People, to deepen respect for their wisdom and culture.
It wasn’t until after attending a chocolate-making course and discovering that one of the ingredients was an essential oil that the idea for Chocolate On Purpose was born. After exploring more ingredients, Fiona decided to use ‘bush food’ as it’s something her ancestors have used for over sixty thousand years.
Chocolate on Purpose is more than just chocolate. It is a vehicle to create something bigger. What started out as a way to share the healing power of botanicals gradually increased to discussing significant Indigenous issues with the wider community. Chocolate on Purpose became a small ‘cog’ in the reconciliation wheel, which has slowly begun to turn and promote awareness and appreciation for the ancient Indigenous wisdom and culture.
After studying aromatic medicine, Fiona had a greater understanding of the healing power of plants. Plenty of people see naturopaths or traditional Chinese medicine professionals, but once money gets tight, they stop investing it in these areas. Fiona saw this as a challenge and wanted to find a more mainstream way to share the healing powers plants possessed.
In their products, Chocolate on Purpose only uses sustainable chocolate grown by a supplier that builds diversity for the cacao farmers, including fair prices, no reliance on forced labour, avoiding palm oil, and supporting the women and children in the village. Fiona also sources Australian native botanicals from Indigenous growers wherever possible. Although this comes at additional cost to Fiona, she knows that it’s part of the impact she wants to build.
If you want to learn more about Fiona and grab some tasty treats, check out Chocolate on Purpose’s offering.

Food Sovereignty and Tasty Treats with Living Koko
BY ELLIE TRAVICA
You may have tried their delicious chocolate or cacao skin care, but Living Koko has a broader purpose. This woman-and-veteran-founded social enterprise is championing the way for positive social change by pushing the notion of food sovereignty.
With deep cultural ties to the Pacific Islands, co-founder Phoebe Preuss wanted to create a business that honoured the land’s Indigenous people and ensured the farmers were earning well-above-average wage.
While mainstream organisations dominate the market, Phoebe is working to slow down this consumption and make a change at the top, stating,
Food sovereignty is another crucial aspect of Living Koko’s mission. According to La Via Campesina, food sovereignty refers to “the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.” Phoebe also expresses how Indigenous people’s in-depth knowledge of the climate system should be respected and acknowledged.
Aside from all of this, Living Koko is constantly looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact. Everything that they don’t use is repurposed for other uses. This includes skin care products, drinking cacao and tea –they even used leftover parts of the cacao bean in an alcohol-free beer collaboration!
Rather than providing ‘aid’ to the Pacific Islands, Living Koko seeks to support and empower the growers and suppliers by creating markets that otherwise may not be available for their produce. They want to ensure the cacao growers at the beginning of the supply chain are being considered.
Living Koko does much more than provide some of the best cacao in the world. As a business, they want to empower local and international communities through fair, ethical trade while supporting ecologically sound and sustainable farming methods.
This Easter, treat yourself (or your family!) with a gift from Living Koko and support ethical farming.

Our Top Tips for an Eco-Friendly Easter!
BY ELOISE BUNNETT
The Easter weekend often looks very different for everyone. Whether you are providing school holiday entertainment, spending time with family and friends or simply taking the weekend to rest and recharge, we are here to provide tips for an eco-friendly Easter weekend, regardless of your plans!
Make sustainable swaps
If we regularly make small, sustainable swaps, we can make a significant impact. We’ve put together some of our favourite Easter swaps below:
Chocolate
Rather than buying an abundance of cheap chocolate that may go to waste, opt for some ethically-made, quality chocolate. You can find some incredible chocolate suggestions throughout this guide. Not only will it taste better, but good quality chocolate helps to support ethical businesses.
Easter baskets
Instead of disposable baskets and bags, why not try to make one that’ll last year after year? This in itself can be a fun, creative activity. There are heaps of YouTube videos to guide you on your way.
Otherwise, We Might Be Tiny has super cute reusable baskets made out of 100% food-grade silicone. They also have their own recycling program. You can learn more here
Decorative pieces
These days the shops are filled with cheap, plastic decor for Easter. One, in particular, is plastic grass basket filling. Why not swap this for other materials like old fabric scraps or pull out the paper shredder?
Get creative
Are you looking to get creative and upcycle at the same time? We have a win-win solution. Below are three simple DIYs you can do either yourself or with the kids.
• Decorate an old jar to give it a new life.
• Make toilet paper roll bunnies for decorations.
• Create a new toy or pillow from old fabric and old cushion stuffing.
Another way to keep the kids busy this Easter is to create a veggie patch or start a compost bin for your leftover food scraps. This is great for the environment but can act as a new ongoing hobby too.
Recycle where possible
Did you know that chocolate Easter egg foil is recyclable? All you have to do is collect all the wrappers and scrunch them into a golf ball-sized ball before popping them in your recycling bin. When binning other items, a quick Google search of your local council’s waste management can ensure you are recycling when possible and correctly too!
What are your favourite eco-friendly Easter tips? Share them with us via Instagram DM @oracoagency!

Plastic with a Purpose: Precious Plastic Melbourne
BY ELLIE TRAVICA
One of the significant challenges we face when it comes to recycling is knowing what can and can’t be recycled, what needs to go in a specific bin and what can be recycled at specialist recycling companies. Unfortunately, smaller hard plastics –like plastic bottle caps – often must be separated before being put in the bin.
These little things fall through the cracks at recycling centres and can cause all sorts of issues in the recycling process. Enter Precious Plastic Melbourne – a company finding creative ways to create a second life for plastics.
Inspired by the Precious Plastic movement circulating in the Netherlands, Founders Piers and Kayla started Precious Plastic Melbourne with a vision to create a circular, waste-free future for plastic waste.
A key part of their mission is to empower the community to recycle plastic themselves by facilitating the set-up of micro-recycling workspaces. The company’s Australian-made machines are helping them give plastics a second life. Aside from creating awesome products like plant pots,
games of Jenga and egg cups (just in time for Easter!), they sell everything they use so that you can create your own masterpieces from the comfort of your very own home or workplace.
While not everyone will be able to purchase their own set-up, their website is jam-packed full of tips on how to reduce micro-plastic and where to recycle your plastic bottle caps. This Easter, Precious Plastic Melbourne is generously offering 20% off on their Recycled Egg Cups. You can find their offer here

Hop to It! Getting Crafty This Easter with Eco Art and Craft
BY ELLIE TRAVICA
Easter egg hunts are – arguably – one of the best parts of Easter for kids and big kids alike! However, playing the role of the Easter Bunny can come with its own challenges. Days that are too hot can cause hidden chocolate to melt and leave less than ideal stains on your new carpet. Nosy animals can help themselves to harmful chocolate thinking that it was meant for them, turning Easter morning into a very expensive outing to the vet.
It’s time to reimagine the traditional Easter egg hunt!
Chocolate is a crucial part of Easter –we wouldn’t dare take that away from you! – however, there are some other fantastic ways to have an egg-citing Easter that gets everyone involved.
Eco Art and Craft Founder, Naomi Parsons, founded her business with the vision for 100% plant-based crayons and art mediums, so that kids can “colour the rainbow naturally”. We spoke with Naomi about activities that parents can engage their children in this Easter.
• Wooden egg crafting kits allow children to paint and colour eggs that can be used for years to come. These eggs aren’t only for Easter hunts though. They can be used in things like kitchen play, role play or farm play, making a special appearance each Easter.
•Avoid single use or mass-produced basket for Easter egg hunts. Instead, Naomi suggests upcycling one from a thrift store or downloading her DIY template here.
•Try your hand at an Easter egg dying activity using ingredients from your kitchen. You can find out more here

Create an Easter Egg Hunt for your Pup
BY ELLIE TRAVICA
We’re almost certain that your dog would enjoy an Easter treat hunt of their own just as much (if not more) than the kids! Not only is it a fun activity, it’s also great for your dog’s mental stimulation.
Here are some tips on how to create a dog-friendly Easter hunt.
1. Choose your treats
Instead of hiding chocolate eggs (poison to pups), opt for something your dog will enjoy. As your dog relies on their nose to find rewards, choose strongly scented treats you know they love.
2. Safety first
If your hunt is taking place in a park or public space, you’ll need to keep your pup on a leash. Monitor your dog – especially in a group setting – as some are prone to behaviours such as resource guarding or feel anxious around other dogs.
3. Tailor it to your pup
If your dog prefers their toy collection over their treats, consider how you can incorporate their favourite toys into the game. Also, consider the size of your doga dachshund won’t be able to get onto the couch without help!
We’d love to see pictures or videos from your pup’s Easter hunt! Be sure to send us a DM and let us know how it went.
