CELL-EBRATING SCIENCE: A RECAP OF SCIENCE CLUB’S 2020 ENDEAVORS Written By OGHS Advanced Science Research Club If you’ve had the chance to become involved in Oak Grove’s science scene, then you know that it’s a community full of bright and curious individuals who are passionate about discovery and creating a name for themselves in the increasingly competitive world of STEM. In recent years, Science Club and its accompanying science research cohort have been blazing new trails in educational opportunities for students. Our Scientists in our Society series--hosted by science teacher Ms. Claudio--provides students the ability to directly connect with professionals in the STEM industry, and many students have been able to seek internships from the connections made in the science research cohort. However, this year has been unlike anything that Science Club expected. For a club that depends so much on in-person interaction and activities, the pandemic has made it increasingly difficult for students to do hands-on science activities, or even work on science projects to enter in competitions.

After struggling to figure out how to continue to stay connected with the Oak Grove community from a socially distanced perspective, we came up with the idea of creating a digital science magazine. Thus, The Science Society was born. In simple terms, The Science Society takes on a non-traditional approach of delivering science news to its audience. A blend of journalism, art, and science, the digital magazine features student-written articles regarding personal experiences in STEM, opinions, and new developments in the STEM industry. This magazine is one of science club’s greatest achievements this year, and it has brought back a sense of purpose and energy into the club that was missing when the pandemic first hit. We are looking forward to expanding the platform of the magazine so that it is accessible to people beyond the Oak Grove Community. Ultimately, when we transition our leadership, we hope that The Science Society remains an integral part of the club and beyond.
