Following Oak Grove traditions, Oak Grove held their annual Welcome Back Rally on Friday, August 19, 2022! The football stadium was decked out in colorful posters cheering on all four classes. We have our class boards to thank for our spirited and filled bleachers! Class boards and ASB arrived at school 2 hours before school in preparation of rally games, music and decorations. As music filled the football field, students sat in their respective areas amongst their class, eager for the rally activities to begin. Kicking off the rally fun, our beloved MC, Mr. Rosato, performed our traditional class roll call where each class made their presence known with loud cheers and screams The itinerary consisted 4 memorable performances: Cheer, Poly, Kpop and Folklorico! Each performance hyped up the audience even more and left us anticipating for more! As for rally games, the class put on an intense competition of Tug-o-War. Unlike the classic game, a kiddie pool filled with water was placed
in between the competing teams, increasing the desperation and desire to win! The classes also competed in a "Finish the Lyric" game where the loudest and most accurate class earns spirit points to go towards Oak Grove's biggest event of the year, Fantastics! As expected, by the end of the rally, Seniors won the highest amount of points of 437, followed by the juniors with 306 and sophomores and freshmen with 224 and 139
Summer coming to a close only means one thing at Oak Grove High School, Football season is around the corner! This last Saturday, Oak Grove held its first white-out preseason game of the school year, against Hollister High School. Hollister gave the opening kick-off for the JV game and with that kick-off came an eruption of school spirit from both sides of the field. Spectators cheered and howled for their teams while chowing down on tacos and other available snacks. There were several notable moments during the game, but the moment that got the biggest crowd cheer was #7’s big gain in the second quarter of the game, running about 45 yards and making it across the 50-yard line. Ultimately though, Oak Grove’s JV had a close loss to Hollister’s JV, with the final score sitting at 0-14 Soon after, Oak Grove’s varsity game began, with Oak Grove giving the opening kick-off Though the sun was setting, school spirit was only rising! There were several hefty yard gains by Oak Grove, with notable ones being #6 and #12 managing to gain 16 and 17 yards respectively. Without a doubt though, the play of the night was #50’s fumble recovery for the Eagles Oak Grove’s team gave its best efforts til the very end but lost to Hollister, 0-28 Despite the losses, school spirit and a sense of brotherhood emanating from the football team stayed
throughout, and with entertaining performances from the band and cheer squad alongside the delicious snacks and food available, this Football season at Oak Grove is shaping up to be a great one.
Led by their captain, MaiLan Vuong, and co-captain, Jay Nguyen. Last year, Oak Grove was 2nd best in their division. It will be very exciting to see how well they will do this season. Because their division has grown so big, the B league has been split into 2 separate divisions based on location. Coach Mari is also looking into having a scrimmage with Valley Christian, who are in a different league. OG will also be having a scrimmage with Santa Teresa on September 6th and are very excited for their match; they’re the most anticipated school this year. Additionally, the seniors are looking forward to having their senior night on October 26th! This year, they have 9 graduating seniors. Lastly, please look forward to their future fundraisers which will be held at school featuring milk tea and other various foods/drinks. Our games are every Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm, come and support us at the tennis courts in the student parking lot!
It’s our final year in high school and what better way to start it off than with a sunrise dedicated to our SENIORS!! We had an amazing turnout with attendance and many people brought their friends along. Our hardworking Senior Board made two cutout frames for people to take pictures with. There were free doughnuts, lemonade, and water for anyone to take and eat We walked around asking people if they wanted pictures and everyone was very
much willing to take pictures with their friends and cutouts. By the end of sunrise there were so many pictures taken from our board and everyone else who came. Sadly, the weather was not on our side so we were not able to see the sunrise clearly… Another event we tied into sunrise was that we wrote letters to their future selves, these letters will be given at Senior Sunset so stay tuned for that!
The beginning of the school year is stressful for everyone, but especially our teachers and administrators! With new lessons, new students, and a new year, it’s easy for teachers to begin to feel overwhelmed. Mrs. Tran, Oak Grove's AP Psychology teacher, felt that we should reward our staff for all their hard work by giving them the time to relax and enjoy themselves amongst their peers. When this idea was proposed to Mr. Chung, ASB immediately knew that we would support our Oak Grove staff. Every Tuesday our Leadership team will set up the hill with canopies and speakers to prepare for our weekly Over The Hill On The Hill event! The event's debut was a huge success for teachers with support from Mrs. Black, Dr. Johnson, Mr. Kwong and more of Oak Grove’s favorite teachers and staff! Teachers like Mrs. Black and Mrs. Tran say that they are excited to see this event repeated in upcoming weeks and hope to see even more teachers attend as the event gains more popularity!
On Friday August 19th, Senior Class Board hosted its first Chill on the Hill of the year! Class of 2023's takeover featured a variety of new and fun activities. For the perfect photo 'op', the seniors created a cute Sanrio themed backdrop strung across the stage. Many seniors got together to take photos together including our very own senior board! The seniors also played Class of 2023's favorite tunes, releasing a song recommendation form in advance and compiling a playlist of their class' preferred tracks. The highlight of the Seniors' takeover however was definitely their fun and exciting game of musical chairs! With the chance of winning a Target gift card at stake, eight seniors battled it out by the hill with Royce coming out as the winner! The seniors enjoyed the game so much that they played another round for fun, this time attracting a few underclassmen and crowning Douglas as the winner of the second round.
In the midst of Oak Grove's diverse chill on the hill themes, Ms. Peth along with our Link Crew leaders hosted an enthusiastic Chill on the Hill dedicated to the special Class of 2026! This event followed their scavenger hunt as an opportunity to submit their completed scavenger hunt list and receive their prize! The reward was a variety of ice cream popsicles, perfect for the scorching hot Friday weather. On the 26th of August during lunch, the hill was crowded with students eager to claim their ice cream cones. On the same Friday, a military organization also came onto school campus to recruit potential students who were interested in their program! Coincidentally, they were also offering Otter Pops to the students! Oak Grove students had a refreshing and relaxing end to their week with double the ice cream!

Animal: Vaquita
Status: Critically Endangered
Meet the Vaquitas
Small dolphin-like mammals, the vaquita is currently considered to be one of the most endangered animals on Earth. These porpoises are considered the smallest of their kind and are often compared to pandas because of their striking features!
The main culprit behind the vaquita’s endangered state has been illegal poaching done by cartels. As these small creatures live in similar areas to the totoaba fish -- who have been illegally caught and traded for thousands of dollars in China -- they often get caught in the large nets meant for the totoaba As a result, their numbers have dwindled rapidly!
With an appallingly low population estimated at roughly ten, this species is likely to go extinct very soon if serious action is not taken. We here at EAC highly recommend showing support for conservation efforts in the Gulf of California, whether that be through donations or through following their work and making
the effort to participate in things such as petitions. One specific group we found to be highly knowledgeable and active in saving the vaquitas was !Viva Vaquita!, a coalition of multiple other conservation organizations To learn more about their work and how to help, visit vivavaquita.org
