Have a Holly Jolly Rally Written By OGHS ASB Hey, Eagles! First off, if you have not already seen the Virtual Holiday Rally Video, check it out now on the ASB YouTube Channel: OGHS ASB! For the past month, ASB and the class boards had been working extra hard to prepare for our Annual Holiday Rally and Spirit Week. There were a total of five spirit days and four games that students were able to participate in. Spirit week took place via Instagram and offered both traditional and new spirit days. We were ecstatic to see the large number of student participation and class representation in the spirit days. Each picture sent in counted as one point towards their respective class points. Keep up the fantastic work and we hope to see more and more students participate in future spirit days. To begin our holiday-themed rally games, we prepared a “Speed Gift Wrapping Challenge.” The rules for this game stated that one player from each class attempted to wrap as many random objects as they could and as fast as they could. Next up, we had a “Gingerbread House Decorating Competition” where two players from each class had 10 minutes each to make the most aesthetically pleasing gingerbread house; however, there was a twist halfway through the game!
Players were only permitted to use a singular hand to decorate, which made the competition more difficult for the players but more entertaining for the audience. Then, we had a game of “Holiday Jeopardy” where one player from each class answered various holiday and Oak Grove themed questions! As for our final game, we had an at-home scavenger hunt where two players from each class had three minutes to search for household items from a list provided by ASB. The class with the most items checked off the list was declared the winner! Overall, our Virtual Holiday Rally Video consisted of a festive introduction, a compilation of games, special performances, and more! If you would like to see the standings for class points or just want to get into the holiday spirit, watch it at OGHS ASB’s YouTube channel, and make sure to click the like and subscribe buttons while you’re at it! We hope you enjoy the Holiday Rally as much as we did, and we would like to show our appreciation to our participants, class boards, and ASB Communications, Alyson Lee, for working so hard to make this video possible. Stay safe and happy holidays, Eagles!
HOLIDAY RALLY GAMES
JEOPARDY
It was a good experience, and I enjoyed having fun with all of you guys! -Saris, 2024
GINGERBREAD HOUSE DECORATING During the rally game I worked with my friend Madison with building a gingerbread house :D it was super stressful but working with a friend made it lots more fun and my favorite part was the two of us panicking during the entirety of the event! -Frank Pfeilsticker, 2022
SPEED GIFT WRAPPING I wanted to say the gift wrapping game was super fun, and yes i won because class of 21 is superior! Also I'm glad ASB found a way for us to have fun all while staying safe and social distanced! -Kim Tran, 2021
SCAVENGER HUNT
Organized and a great idea especially for the constraints we have now. Rather than seeing it as another zoom call I was actually engaged in the activity and found it pretty enjoyable. Also, the partner aspect of the game was nice, the idea of talking to someone else again and working alongside them was relieving. I believe it was definitely a well thought out game and would participate in something similar again. -Isaac Romero, 2023

Distance Learning Continues into Semester Two Curious how semester two will look? The Eagle Eye has the inside scoop for you! Written By August Pfeilsticker Students and staff have taken part in distance learning since the end of April, making it nearly eight months of distance learning. As of now, it is unclear whether or not Oak Grove students and staff are returning back to in-person instruction. Despite Santa Clara County’s clear expectations of wearing a mask and maintaining social-distancing protocols, cases continue to spike which yields the resume to average activities and outings, school included. Oak Grove’s principal, Mrs. Brazil, explains the reopening of school through East Side Union District’s “Four-Phase Reopening Plan.” Phase 1 provides students and staff access to reliable internet and a productive work space. Phase 2 gives permission to extracurricular activities such as ASSETs and club programs, as well as athletic conditioning through the enforcement of strict COVID-19 protocols.
Phase 3 allows small groups of students to return to in person instruction, while others continue distance learning. The final plans of Phase 4 are still up in the air. In the case of Phase 4 being reached before June, it is assumed that distance learning would still be a primary choice for students. With the fluctuation of COVID-19, it is ambiguous when exactly students and staff are returning to in-class instruction. As of early November, Phase 2 was launched. However, it was cut short within the same week due to the county moving to purple tier. Remember to stay safe Eagles, and maintain COVID-19 protocols, especially this holiday season!
INTERARKEYCEF'S Holiday Holiday Drive Drive Written By OGHS ARK Every year, the ARK Club holds an event known as “Holiday Care PARKages.” This event allows ARKers from all over NorCal to unite and pass out care packages to the homeless. This year, Oak Grove’s community clubs have come together once again in order to continue spreading positivity this holiday season! For the past couple of years, ARKers have expanded the service event to meet up in downtown San Jose to participate in fun ARKtivites like Riff-Offs, and a Rock, Paper, and Scissors Tournament.
Through helping the community, people have connected and bonded with one another through his incredible event! Due to COVID19 restrictions, INTERARKEYCEF will not be hosting an in-person event, but instead, will hold multiple school drives to raise donations. While maintaining social distancing rules, anyone can drop by the school administration office to drop off any essential supplies, such as hygienic products, snacks, and/or clothing. All donations will be given to a local homeless shelter near Oak Grove High School. Thank you to everyone who contributed or are planning to contribute! Have a safe, but holly jolly holiday break!
The Beginning Of
Beats 'N Eats Written By Vivian Pham and Trang Ly
Despite distance learning, we can’t forget about Oak Grove’s wildly popular Beats ‘N Eats! To refresh everyone’s memory, our Fall Beats ‘N Eats occurred in early October 2020. With the traditional event transitioning to its virtual state, The Eagle Eye was curious about how Beats ‘N Eats began in the first place. We were able to get connected with Oak Grover’s alumni, Joseph Le, who was the creator of the Beats ‘N Eats title!
The original idea of Beats ‘N Eats was inspired by food truck events that took place around 2014-16 by organizations such as Moveable Feast and Off the Grid. As food trucks grew in popularity it was infused into the culture of this event and this concept has grown ever since. The idea of an outdoor rally that showcased student talent with the bonus of delicious food “seemed like the perfect event-- entertainment, food, and we could make money for our school!”
Former activities director, Mr. Greg Brazil had an amazing relationship with the ASB and leadership teams. He approved students to host the first-ever Beats ‘N Eats! The collaborative effort made by ASB, student leadership teams, and volunteers brought Beats ‘N Eats to life. The ASB team worked on entertainment to include both student and public artists, which led to Oak Grove showcasing a performance from Jeremy Passion! Upcoming Beats ‘N Eats traditions came with a trial and error process, but paid off for future attendees. At the time, hosting Beats ‘N Eats was a challenge because the organizers were high schoolers without any prior experience. $20 was made from the whole event, which was actually a food truck donation. Looking back, Oak Grove has come a long way to create and grow our traditions. Beats ‘N Eats has now shifted into a virtual event due to COVID-19, but its legacy will be kept on!
When I left Oak Grove though, it definitely far exceeded my expectations for it. I didn't expect it to become an event for the community. -Joseph Le
CELL-EBRATING SCIENCE: A RECAP OF SCIENCE CLUB’S 2020 ENDEAVORS Written By OGHS Advanced Science Research Club If you’ve had the chance to become involved in Oak Grove’s science scene, then you know that it’s a community full of bright and curious individuals who are passionate about discovery and creating a name for themselves in the increasingly competitive world of STEM. In recent years, Science Club and its accompanying science research cohort have been blazing new trails in educational opportunities for students. Our Scientists in our Society series--hosted by science teacher Ms. Claudio--provides students the ability to directly connect with professionals in the STEM industry, and many students have been able to seek internships from the connections made in the science research cohort. However, this year has been unlike anything that Science Club expected. For a club that depends so much on in-person interaction and activities, the pandemic has made it increasingly difficult for students to do hands-on science activities, or even work on science projects to enter in competitions.
After struggling to figure out how to continue to stay connected with the Oak Grove community from a socially distanced perspective, we came up with the idea of creating a digital science magazine. Thus, The Science Society was born. In simple terms, The Science Society takes on a non-traditional approach of delivering science news to its audience. A blend of journalism, art, and science, the digital magazine features student-written articles regarding personal experiences in STEM, opinions, and new developments in the STEM industry. This magazine is one of science club’s greatest achievements this year, and it has brought back a sense of purpose and energy into the club that was missing when the pandemic first hit. We are looking forward to expanding the platform of the magazine so that it is accessible to people beyond the Oak Grove Community. Ultimately, when we transition our leadership, we hope that The Science Society remains an integral part of the club and beyond.
