fora e dentro de nós desatam nós A poeta Yvette Centeno redigiu oito Koans para as pinturas de Pedro Chorão da série “Ventanias”, agora em exposição na galeria Sá da Costa; oito aforismos de inspiração zen budista cujo objectivo consiste em propiciar aos praticantes desta disciplina espiritual alcançarem a “iluminação”. O propósito destes apontamentos poéticos subtis, não é aportar num qualquer porto definitivo, do mesmo modo que as oito pinturas de Chorão a que se referem circunscrevem no suporte que as delimita materialmente apenas o teor da sua existência individual, revelada no decurso do tempo que as viu nascer e medrar, deixando registado sobre a tela a vibração dessa experiência sensível; a pincelada irrequieta e tensa derramada em espasmos contidos, ecoando no espaço em tonalidades surdas, ora revelando, ora ocultando a multiplicidade de matizes sobrepostos… indagações, acasos, memórias. Nem mesmo os esboços de formas flamejantes que serpenteiam verticalmente sobre o magma latejante à superfície das pinturas revelam qualquer intenção de se cristalizarem em estruturas reconhecíveis ou referenciáveis. A sua potência é antes a de uma energia viva, plena “que desencadeia por uma série de movimentos contemplativos a determinação de todas as formas… a indistinção sem limites” (Maria Filomena Molder, “O pensamento da forma”). Tal como os koans budistas são instrumentos usados para romper com os paradoxos e aparências que os sentidos nos devolvem do real, privilegiando, pelo contrário, o trabalho meditativo continuado para a apreensão correcta da realidade imanente, também a pintura de Pedro Chorão sempre manifestou uma vocação unitiva, utilizando uma metodologia de trabalho apofática, manifesta no despojamento de meios e materiais utilizados e na simplificação extrema da composição. Por vezes ficamos até com a sensação de que o pintor, ao longo da sua longa e muito produtiva carreira artística, pintou sempre o mesmo quadro, ou dito por outras palavras, esteve sempre, em cada nova pintura, a regressar ao início, a colocar-se perante as mesmas interrogações, sem atribuir uma importância decisiva ao lastro de conhecimento entretanto acumulado por anos e anos de trabalho intenso… tal como o koan que nos catapulta para 1

a iluminação ao confundir nossas mentes com ideias impossíveis: "1 Uma abelha na flôr: Busca o mel ou a côr? 2 O ramo que se quebra Sob o vento mais forte 3 Um tronco despido Dá lenha a outra vida 4 No Outono chuvoso O brilho da aurora

5 No preto e branco O suave sopro da forma 6 Não se mata o Pato Selvagem Ele voa com a nossa alma 7 Um ramo: um braço que se inclina buscando o seu abraço 8 Mulher: um corpo despedaçado"

Mas se o despojamento e a simplicidade plástica, tanto na forma como na cor, são uma característica sempre presente nas pinturas de Pedro Chorão, o artista não deixa, por isso, de reclamar a “necessidade absoluta de referências concretas”, porque o mundo das formas puras é por ele concebido à imagem do mundo das formas sensíveis, despojando estas das suas variações acidentais. Esta necessidade de enraizamento na realidade concreta aproxima Pedro Chorão da perspectiva que Mondrian exprimiu em “Natural reality and abstract reality” (1919-1920), quando imaginou uma conversa entre um pintor naturalista (X), um leigo (Y) e um pintor realista abstracto (Z), numa noite enluarada ao ar livre, no campo extenso. Afirma Z – Quanta paz… Y – Então a natureza ainda te toca? Z – Se não me tocasse, eu não seria pintor. Y – Como já não desenhas a natureza há muito tempo, pensava que ela não significava nada para ti. Z – Pelo contrário. A natureza toca-me profundamente. Windstorms outside or inside us untying knots The poet Yvette Centeno composed eight Koans for the paintings by Pedro Chorão from the series "Ventanias", now on show at Galeria Sá da Costa; eight aphorisms of Zen inspiration whose aim is to enable practitioners of this spiritual discipline to reach "enlightenment". The purpose of these subtle poetic notes is not to provide any definitive truth, in the same way that the eight paintings by Chorão to which they refer only enclose in their material support the content of their own individual existence, as they are born and thrive in the course of time, engraving on the canvas the vibration of that unique sensitive experience; the restless and tense brushstroke spilt in contained spasms, echoing in the surrounding space in muted tones, sometimes revealing, sometimes concealing the multiplicity of overlapping shades... enquiries, accidents, memories. Not even the flaming outlines that wind vertically over the throbbing magma of the painting’s surface reveal any intention of crystallising into immediately identifiable structures. Their power is rather that of a living, full energy "that unleashes through a series of contemplative movements the determination of all forms... indistinctness without limits" (Maria Filomena Molder, "O pensamento da forma"). Just as the Buddhist koans are instruments used to break away from the paradoxes and appearances of reality transmitted by our senses, favouring instead a continued meditative work for the correct apprehension of immanent reality, Pedro Chorão's painting has also always manifested a unitive vocation, using an apophatic working method, evident in the stripping away of means and materials used and in the extreme simplification of the composition. Sometimes we even get the feeling that the painter, throughout his long and very productive artistic career, always painted the same picture, or in other words, he was always, in each new painting, going back to the beginning, facing the same questions, with the same astonishment, without giving a decisive importance to the ballast of knowledge meanwhile accumulated by years and years of intense work... just like the koan that catapults us to enlightenment by confusing our minds with impossible ideas, counterposing to them intuitive qualities averse to rational thought: 3

But if plastic stripping and simplicity, both in form and colour, are a recurrent characteristic in Pedro Chorão's painting, the artist nevertheless claims for himself the "absolute need for concrete references", because the world of pure forms is conceived by him in the image of the world of sensitive forms, stripping these of their accidental variations. This need to be rooted in concrete reality brings Pedro Chorão closer to the perspective that Mondrian expressed in "Natural reality and abstract reality" (1919-1920), when he imagined a conversation between a naturalist painter (x), a layman (y) and a realist abstract painter (z), on a moonlit night outdoors, in a vast field. Exclaims Z - How peaceful... Y - So nature still touches you? Z - If it didn't touch me, I wouldn't be a painter. Y - Since you haven't drawn nature for a long time, I thought it meant nothing to you. Z - On the contrary. Nature touches me deeply. I just paint it differently.

Pedro Chorão Nasceu em Coimbra, em 1945. Entre 1963 e 1967 viveu em Liverpool, onde começou a interessar-se por pintura. Frequentou o curso de História da Arte na École du Louvre e a na École Pratique de Hautes Études, Sorbonne, Paris (1967-1968). Entre 1968 e 1972 fez o serviço militar obrigatório, passando dois anos em Cabo Verde. A sua paixão pela pintura intensificou-se após o regresso a Lisboa, procurando colher lições de pintores amigos do pai, nomeadamente Luís Dourdil e António Dacosta. Licenciou-se em Pintura na Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa em 1976. Foi bolseiro da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian em Paris (1976-1978) e em Lisboa (1987-1989). O seu percurso artístico desenvolver-se-ia com grande regularidade ao longo dos anos, com a participação em inúmeras exposições coletivas e uma longa lista de exposições individuais em galerias e espaços institucionais, em Portugal e no estrangeiro, onde se destacam as duas exposições complementares comissariados por José Luís Porfírio, em 2016, onde foi apresentada uma seleção de obras dos seus mais de quarenta anos de carreira: no Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria (EGEAC, Galerias Municipais, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa) e na Fundação Carmona e Costa, Espaço de Arte Contemporânea, Lisboa. Dessa iniciativa resultou a publicação de um extenso e meticuloso catálogo, Pedro Chorão: o que diz a pintura – obra 1971-2016, que permite uma visão abrangente do seu percurso artístico. Herdeira de uma multiplicidade de referências, a pintura de Pedro Chorão localiza-se na fronteira entre abstração e figuração. “À data da sua primeira exposição individual, com trinta anos, o artista tinha já um discurso plástico bem estruturado numa apologia de elementaridades expressivas, desenvolvida com grande coerência […]: a preferência por materiais pobres, pela austeridade dos gestos de registo e mesmo pela escolha dos elementos visuais capazes de dar visibilidade ao núcleo central da sua poética – a evocação abstrata do espaço através das geometrias dos planos da pintura, das profundidades das manchas de cor e das atmosferas da luz. Um olhar retrospetivo revela-nos uma estrutura longamente sedimentada”¹. O seu processo de trabalho “desenvolve-se em ciclos temáticos, não tanto por incidências iconográficas mas por exploração de temas plásticos que obviamente conduzem a diferentes estruturas de sentido. Pedro Chorão Born in Coimbra in 1945. Between 1963 and 1967 lived in Liverpool, where he became interested in painting. He studied History of Art at the École du Louvre and at the École Pratique de Hautes Études, Sorbonne, Paris (1967-1968). Between 1968 and 1972 he did his compulsory military service, spending two years in Cape Verde. His passion for painting intensified after his return to Lisbon, seeking lessons from painters who were friends of his father, namely Luís Dourdil and António Dacosta. He graduated in Painting at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa in 1976. He was awarded a grant by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Paris (1976-1978) and in Lisbon (1987-1989). His artistic career would develop with great regularity over the years, with participation in numerous group exhibitions and a long list of solo exhibitions in galleries and institutional spaces, in Portugal and abroad, where the two complementary exhibitions curated by José Luís Porfírio, in 2016, where a selection of works from his over forty-year career was presented, stand out: at Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria (EGEAC, Galerias Municipais, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa) and at Fundação Carmona e Costa, Espaço de Arte Contemporânea, Lisbon. This initiative resulted in the publication of an extensive and meticulous catalogue, Pedro Chorão: o que diz a pintura - obra 1971-2016, which provides a comprehensive overview of his artistic path. Heir to a multiplicity of references, Pedro Chorão's painting is located on the border between abstraction and figuration. "By the time of his first solo exhibition, at the age of thirty, the artist already had a plastic discourse well structured in an apology of expressive elementarities, developed with great coherence [...]: the preference for poor materials, the austerity of the gestures of registration and even the choice of visual elements capable of giving visibility to the central core of his poetics - the abstract evocation of space through the geometries of the paint planes, the depths of the colour stains and the atmospheres of light. A retrospective look reveals a long-settled structure" ¹. His working process "develops in thematic cycles, not so much through iconographic incidences but through the exploration of plastic themes that obviously lead to different structures of meaning.
