Brigada Naval Numa ocupação inusitada de um armazém do Clube Naval de Lisboa, Miguel Palma apropria-se de elementos aí encontrados para criar uma instalação que conjuga alguns dos princípios orientadores da sua prática artística, aqui em diálogo com elementos arquitectónicos e decorativos historicamente determinados. A peça central da instalação é um barco à vela suspenso. A embarcação, de construção americana e datada de 1943, tem como pano de fundo uma impressiva pintura mural apologética dos descobrimentos portugueses que terá sido realizada por altura da famosa Exposição do Mundo Português, realizada em 1940 na zona de Belém em Lisboa. Máquina de propaganda colonialista, a ideologia da exposição ressoa neste mural, agora curto-circuitado pela intervenção de Miguel Palma. Na verdade, o artista vai transformar aquilo que é uma embarcação de recreio numa peça híbrida por via de uma vela feita a partir de tecido de uma tenda militar. O carácter lúdico do barco fica em suspenso pela agressividade deste material militar, onde o artista desenha “marcações de vitória”, que são ícones de abatimento de material inimigo (normalmente pintados em aviões e barcos de combate). Obra nostálgica, Brigada Naval fala-nos da perda da inocência, da necessidade de olhar o passado com sentido crítico e, em última análise, da capacidade da arte erigir territórios que questionam o presente. Entre a realidade e a ficção, entre a apropriação e a construção desviante, Miguel Palma conduz-nos numa viagem onde as formas se dilatam em ideias complexas. Miguel von Hafe Pérez

Brigada Naval In an unexpected occupation of a warehouse belonging to the Clube Naval de Lisboa, Miguel Palma takes over elements found there to create an installation that combines some of the guiding principles of his artistic practice, presented here as part of a dialogue with historically determined architectural and decorative elements. The centrepiece of the installation is a sailing boat suspended from a small crane. The boat, built in the USA and dated 1943, is set against an impressive mural painting depicting the Portuguese discoveries, which was probably made at the time of the famous Portuguese World Exhibition, held in 1940 in the Belém area in Lisbon. The exhibition’s ideology, a machine of colonialist propaganda, resonates in this mural, now short-circuited by Miguel Palma’s intervention. In fact, the artist is transforming a recreational boat into a hybrid piece using a sail made from the fabric of a military tent. The recreational character of the boat is put on hold by the aggressiveness of this military material, where the artist draws “victory markings”, which are icons of shooting down enemy material (usually painted on military planes and battleships). A nostalgic work, Brigada Naval refers to the loss of innocence, the need to look critically at the past and, ultimately, to the ability of art to build up territories that question the present. Between reality and fiction, between appropriation and deviant construction, Miguel Palma takes us on a journey where forms dilate into complex ideas. Miguel von Hafe Pérez

Miguel Palma Miguel Palma (Lisboa 1964) é um artista que se apropria das narrativas de uma modernidade em permanente questionamento para melhor refletir sobre o presente. O fascínio de Miguel Palma por ícones da modernidade clássica é evidente: o mundo da aviação, o automóvel, a arquitetura, a natureza (mais ou menos domesticada) e a tecnologia em geral. A curiosidade e o modo como articula diferentes horizontes do saber sublinham a capacidade de nos reinventarmos, dissimulando a inexorável lei maior, que é a da vitória do tempo sobre a finitude humana. Enquanto dispositivos potenciadores de um olhar crítico sobre o nosso passado recente e o nosso presente, os enunciados de Miguel Palma confrontam-nos com as tensões vividas no frágil equilíbrio da nossa existência. Tal como liminarmente nos diz o artista «Se o mundo fosse confortável, eu não fazia arte.» Com uma atividade continuada por mais de três décadas, as suas obras transitam entre os mais diversos meios, como a escultura, o vídeo, a instalação, o desenho e a performance. Miguel Palma Miguel Palma (Lisbon,1964) is an artist who appropriates the narratives of a modernity in permanent questioning to better reflect on the present. The fascination of Miguel Palma for the icons of classical modernity is evident: the world of aviation, the automobile, architecture, nature (more or less domesticated) and technology in general. The curiosity and the way he articulates different horizons of knowledge, underline the capacity to reinvent ourselves, disguising an inexorable greater law, which is the victory of time over the human finitude. As devices that enhance a critical look at our recent past and our present, Miguel Palma’s statements confront us with the tensions experienced in the fragile balance of our existence. As the Artist directly tells us « If the world was comfortable, I wouldn’t make art.» With a career spanning more than three decades, his works cover different media, such as sculpture, video, installation, drawing and performance. He is represented in numerous public and private, national and international collections such as: Centre Pompidou (Paris, France); Berardo Collection (Lisbon, Portugal); Culturgest (Lisbon, Portugal); MAAT (Lisbon, Portugal); FRAC Orléans (Orléans, France); FRAC-Artothèque Nouvelle Aquitaine (Limoges, France); FRAC-Limousin (Limoges, France); Serralves Foundation (Porto, Portugal); Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, Portugal); MNAC (Lisbon, Portugal); ARCO Foundation (Madrid, Spain); ASU Art Museum – Arizona State University Art Museum (Tempe, Arizona).
