As Spring gives way to Summer and more visitors begin to arrive, the beach bars and restaurants move into full swing, the smell of sardines being cooked over log fires fills the warm air and once again, our small part of the world enjoys another exciting summer season. So dust off those flip flops, dig out the swim suits and stock up on sun cream. Hot days and balmy nights are just around the corner people, bringing with it everything that summer life has to offer.

The laid back relaxed look of linen is an acceptable style in today’s modern world. Some of us love it, others hate it. But there is a lot more to this fabric than you may realise.

Linen is a natural fabric made from the flax plant and is one of the oldest and best loved textiles in the world. It is eco-friendly and sustainable. The fibre that linen is made from is called flax. Not only is it a beautiful blue flower, but it also requires less pesticides and fertilisers than other plants. It goes through a careful process to be woven together into what we know as linen.

Once harvested, every part of the plant is utilised for various purposes, right down to the seed. The fibres are recyclable and eventually biodegradable.

They found that the residents here lived longer, had fewer chronic diseases, and needed much less medical intervention than those who ate a more typical “Western” diet. So, what do you need to eat to gain the benefits of the Mediterranean diet? Ideally your food choices should be based around these healthy and delicious Mediterranean foods.

*Lower carbohydrate vegetables such as courgette, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, aubergine etc – try to eat a rainbow of colours to get the best range of antioxidant benefits.

* Lower sugar fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and plums. Plus fresh figs and occasional dates – they contain fabulous soluble fibre that helps balance blood sugar.

* Whole grains full of fibre to keep you full longer, such as quinoa, millet, buckwheat, oats, barley and rye.

* Eggs – these each contain 6g of protein, and are a valuable source of choline that is often lacking – try looking for eggs with added omega 3, for an even healthier choice.

Padel has been rising through the sports industry at lightning speed. There are now a staggering 8 million active padel players around the world! Padel is easy to play, quick to learn, and sociable; so no wonder it is the fastest growing racket sport in the world.

The sport began when Mexican billionaire Enrique Corcuera went to build a tennis court at his home in 1969. He’d run out of space and couldn’t fit a full size tennis court into his development plan, so instead decided to build a smaller version, merging his love for squash and tennis into one court – and just like that, padel was born. In 1975, whilst in Marbella, Argentine millionaire Julio Menditenguia discovered padel and decided to take the sport to his home country of Argentina. Fast forward to today, and Argentina is now home to 2 million active padel players and an impressive 10,000 padel courts. It seems that the word spreads fast, but the love for padel spreads faster!

Most people could have a good game going within the first half an hour of play, as strength and speed aren’t the deciding factors. The court size is only 1/3rd the size of a tennis court and this makes conversation easy and gives the

The sport shows no sign of slowing down either with more and more clubs investing in padel. New build apartment complexes now have almost an obligation to include a padel court or two in the construction, if they want to see their apartments sell well. And even wealthy owners of larger properties are investing in a private padel court to add not only enjoyment to their lifestyle but value to their property.

Let’s talk about ticks

Las garrapatas son bastante pequeñas y a veces apenas visibles para el ojo humano. Se parecen a las arañas en que son arácnidos y tienen ocho patas. Varían en tamaño y, como adultas, van de los 2mm a los 10mm de largo. El cuerpo de la garrapata suele tener forma de lágrima, pero puede abultarse considerablemente al alimentarse. Por norma, las garrapatas necesitan un huésped del que vivir, así que las zonas donde hay abundante fauna salvaje como ciervos, roedores, ardillas y

ganado son perfectas para las garrapatas y evidentemente un hábitat donde encontrarlas.

Pero no sólo se encuentran en zonas rurales. Las garrapatas también pueden encontrarse en zonas urbanas ya que pueden aferrarse a la ropa o incrustarse en pieles animales y ser transportadas a nuevas localizaciones.

¿Qué hacer si encuentro una garrapata en mi perro?

Cuando volváis de vuestro paseo, pasa las manos y la punta de los dedos por la piel de tu perro para notar cualquier pequeño bulto o protuberancia y dale un buen cepillado. También tendrás que mirar dentro y detrás de las orejas, entre los dedos de las patas, bajo la barbilla y zona del cuello, y estar atento a señales como rascado frecuente o mordisqueo de una zona concreta.

Si encuentras alguna garrapata tendrás que quitarla rápidamente, ya sea usando pinzas o un accesorio especial que puedes comprar en las tiendas de mascotas o el veterinario. Tendrás que retorcer la garrapata girándola en sentido horario, asegurándote de no dejar la cabeza incrustada. Asegúrate de no apretar en exceso el cuerpo de la garrapata, ya

No obstante, durante todo el año es mejor prevenir que curar. Para nosotros los humanos es aconsejable vestir manga larga y pantalón largo al caminar por zonas arboladas, asegurándose de remeter la camisa por el pantalón.

Para tu perro, es aconsejable que lleve un collar anti-parásitos, que impregnará la piel de tu perro con una sustancia que mata a las garrapatas tan pronto como se agarren e intenten alimentarse.

Ticks are pretty small and sometimes barely visible to the human eye. They are similar to spiders in that they are arachnids and have eight legs. They vary in size and as adults range from between 2mm and 10mm in length. The body of the tick is usually a teardrop shape but can balloon up considerably after feeding. Depending on the species of tick, they will also differ in colour with the majority being a brown or reddishbrown colour.

Ticks are endemic to rural areas of Spain and other parts of the world, especially to wooded areas with tall grass and bushes where they lie in wait for any passing traffic such as us humans and our canine friends.

Ticks will generally perch themselves on the end of tall grasses and shrubs and once a new host comes along, they will cling on and embed themselves in the skin of the host. As they are parasitic by nature, they will do this to survive and feed off the new host’s blood.

As a rule, ticks will need a host to live off, so areas in which there is an abundance of wildlife such as deer, rodents, squirrels, and livestock are perfect for ticks and an obvious habitat in which to find them.

But it’s not only rural areas where they can be found. Ticks may also be found in urban areas as they can cling to clothes or get embedded in animal fur and be transported to a new location.

What do I do if I find a tick on my dog?

When you return from your walk, run your hand and fingertips over your dog to feel for any small lumps and bumps and give them a good brush. You will also need to check in and behind the ears, between their toes, under the chin and neck area and look out for signs such as frequent scratching and biting of a particular area.

If you do find any ticks you will need to remove them quickly by either using tweezers or a specialist tool that you can purchase from a pet store or your vet. You will want to twist the tick off in a clockwise direction making sure not to leave the head embedded. Make sure you do not try to squeeze the tick’s body as this may just cause the body to break off leaving the head still attached. Once removed you will want to clean and disinfect the area, your hands, and any tools used, and seek advice from your vet to ascertain whether your dog has been infected or not.

The big question of course is how to protect yourself from these creatures. Well, to begin it is important to know that ticks tend to be more active during Spring and Autumn when the temperature is cooler and when there are generally more rainy days. With that in mind, throughout the whole year, prevention is always better than cure. For us humans, it is advisable that if you are walking in wooded areas you wear long sleeves making sure to tuck your shirt in.

For your dog, it is advisable to wear a protective tick collar which will impregnate your dog’s skin with a substance that will kill any ticks as soon as they latch on and attempt to feed.

If you are in the market for a sporty SUV, then the Cupra Formentor is a vehicle you most certainly should consider. This sleek, sporty SUV has easily enough talent and kerb appeal to sit alongside the more established, premium rivals.

The Formentor is where the Cupra brand and its tribal tattoo logo come into their own. It’s sleek, stylish, sporty and very well-equipped, not to mention practical enough for a family. The excellent driving experience is complemented by a wide range of engines, while the plug-in hybrid models make a compelling case for business users.

It’s not perfect though, not yet anyway, but then with a critical eye, most vehicles aren’t perfect. In my humble opinion, the entry-level models feel a little at odds with the brand’s sporty ethos and some of the interior trim perhaps isn’t up to par, but the

Cupra Formentor coupe-SUV manages to be a desirable and premium product, and it’s worth a place on your shortlist if you’re also looking at cars like the Mercedes GLA, BMW X2 or Peugeot 408. The Cupra Formentor is the first model that’s exclusive to the Spanish spin-off brand, rather than being a hotted-up version of an existing SEAT. It’s Cupra’s first stepping stone to having its own identity, but the Formentor is still heavily influenced by other SEAT models – and the bigger Volkswagen Group empire. That’s not a bad thing for the most part, as we like the latest SEAT Leon and Volkswagen Golf. Our criticisms of the Leon are that it’s not particularly exciting to look at and doesn’t have a massive boot, but the Formentor addresses both of those with cool copper styling touches and a bigger SUV-ish body. The Formentor slots between the Cupra Leon and the Cupra

Ateca, and we’d argue its sleek looks suit the X-shaped Cupra badge better than the square Ateca. As mentioned above, key rivals come from upmarket manufacturers such as the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q2 and BMW X2, as well as some of other coupeSUVs launched recently like the Peugeot 408 and Renault Arakana. All trade heavily on their individual kerb appeal, so the Formentor will have its work cut out luring customers away from these established marques.

While the Cupra Ateca only comes with one brawny petrol engine, the Formentor engine range is a lot broader. There’s no diesels, but the ranger-topping 306bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine is joined by two plug-in hybrids, two more 2.0-litre petrols and even an entry-level 1.5-litre petrol. That means the starting price is much lower than the Cupra Ateca. You might see it as a good-value way

So, let’s talk a little about the course itself. The course plays to a par 71. The course was designed by the prestigious Spanish professional golfer José María Cañizares. The course is characterised by its wide, undulating greens, lush wide fairways and unsurpassable views both to the Mediterranean sea below and the spectacular mountains above and behind. Each hole is very individual and the well placed sandy bunkers and water hazards will catch you out if you are not concentrating on each and every shot.

Hablemos un poco del campo en sí. El campo tiene un par 71. Fue diseñado por el prestigioso golfista profesional español José María Cañizares. El campo se caracteriza por sus amplios y ondulados greens, sus exuberantes y anchas calles y sus inmejorables vistas tanto al mar Mediterráneo por debajo como a las espectaculares montañas por encima y por detrás. Cada hoyo es muy individual y los bunkers de arena bien situados y los obstáculos de agua le sorprenderán si no se concentra en cada golpe.

El campo no es demasiado largo, con 5.326 metros desde los tees amarillos, y ha sido diseñado para ofrecerle una experiencia de golf desafiante pero no por ello menos placentera. Los greens se mantienen a un nivel muy alto, como el resto del campo, pero después de un desafiante golpe de salida y uno o dos hierros (si tienes suerte), es un placer llegar a un green bien cuidado. Encontramos que los greens responden bien a un buen golpe de aproximación y que es un placer puttear en ellos.

Ithas been a while since we played Antequera golf, the delightful, interesting and challenging course located at the base of El Torcal Natural Park. Located just a short drive from malaga and the motorway that runs through it, this 18 hole golf course and surrounding countryside offer all the natural beauty you could wish for in a golf course.

It is a tricky course to play for sure, but enjoyable at the same time, not least of all because of the stunning views from just about every hole you play. The course covers 35 hectacres and plays to a par 72 with a slope index of 145. The course was designed in 2003 by Ryder Cup player José Mª Cañizares who clearly knew how to combine the beauty of golf with the beauty of nature and for me, this is what a great golf experience is all about. We noted on our recent visit how well maintained the course was. The large tees and wide fairways had plenty of manicured grass and the bunkers, whilst plentiful, were sandy and ready to play. And that just leaves the greens to talk about which, once again, were so well maintained, they were a credit to the maintenance teams. Aside from a fabulous golf course, players have full access to all the golfing facilities and services including buggy hire, club hire if required, a floodlit 24 bay driving range, a par 3 for short game and chipping practice, a pitching green, 2 putting greens with a bunker, changing rooms, a club storage room and a well

stocked pro shop. And after your round the golf club bar and restaurant with its large terrace is a perfect place to relax and enjoy even more spectacular views. Should your game need a little help, call into the pro shop and ask about the many options for lessons and classes with a professional instructor. It is even possible to book a round of golf with one of the club professionals to give you a real hands on lesson as you play the course. All in all, our return trip to Antequera Golf was a thoroughly enjoyable one and one we can highly recommend for your next golf outing. n

Hacía tiempo que no jugábamos en Antequera golf, el encantador, interesante y desafiante campo ubicado en la falda del Parque Natural de El Torcal. Situado a poca distancia en coche de Málaga y de la autopista que la atraviesa, este campo de golf de 18 hoyos y el paisaje que lo rodea, ofrecen toda la belleza natural que se puede desear en un campo de golf. Es un campo difícil de jugar, sin duda, pero agradable al mismo tiempo, sobre todo por las impresionantes vistas desde casi todos los hoyos en los que se juega. El campo tiene una superficie de 35 hectáreas, un par 72 y un índice de inclinación de 145 puntos. En nuestra reciente visita observamos lo bien mantenido que estaba el campo. Y eso sin hablar de los greenes que, una vez más, estaban tan bien cuidados que eran un orgullo para los equipos de mantenimiento.

Además de disfrutar de un espléndido campo de golf, los jugadores tienen acceso a todas las instalaciones y servicios, como el alquiler de buggies y palos, un campo de prácticas de 24 hoyos iluminado, un par 3 para practicar el juego corto y el chipping, un pitching green, 2 putting greens con búnker, vestuarios, un almacén de palos y una tienda de golf bien surtida. Y después de su ronda, el bar y restaurante del club de golf, con su amplia terraza, será el lugar perfecto para relajarse y disfrutar de unas vistas aún más espectaculares. So,a waiter ate off my plate this weekend! Now, there’s more to the story of course, but basically, I invited him to show me how to eat a sardine the way it should be eaten, and he did, right there and then. So let me give you some of the background information and tell you how all of this came about.

Close your eyes and picture this… You are in Malaga for the first time. You and your friends have just had a long morning soaking up the rays of the hot Spanish sun and swimming in the sea tom cool off, when lunchtime starts calling. Well, as all of the local readers will already

appreciate, on a Malaga beach you do not need to look too far for an enticing place to eat and drink. In fact, look no further than where the sand meets the paseo, because there is always a long line of Chiringuito’s waiting for you. You don’t even have to open your eyes. Just follow the wafting smell of the fresh fish cooking on the log fire. But let me warn you, it’s all fun and games until your waiter brings over your plate of fish, places it in front of you, and your meal is staring back at you…with eyes. Now, don’t be alarmed. Because once you get past the initial shock of your food having eyes and you are able to put it in

your mouth, it actually tastes fantastic. However, at the time I didn’t have the luxury of an experienced chiringuito diner with me to warn me about my lunch, nor to tell me how to tackle it. So when our smiling Spanish waiter, Carlos, brought over our plate of sardines al espeto, I panicked,

El sabor de Málaga

Uncamarero comió de mi plato este fin de semana! Vale, la historia es más larga, por supuesto; pero básicamente, yo le invité a enseñarme cómo se come una sardina, y él lo hizo, justamente en el momento. Así que déjame darte algunos datos más y contarte cómo llegamos a este punto.

Cierra los ojos e imagina esto… Estás en Málaga por primera vez. Tus amigos y tú acabáis de pasar una larga mañana bañándoos en las deliciosas y templadas aguas del Mediterráneo y absorbiendo los rayos del maravilloso y cálido sol de España, cuando el hambre empieza a llamar. Bien,

como todos los lectores locales ya sabrán, en las playas malagueñas no tienes que buscar muy lejos para encontrar un lugar apetecible en el que comer y beber. De hecho, no busques más allá del paseo marítimo, porque allí siempre hay una larga línea de Chiringuitos esperándote. Ni siquiera tienes que abrir los ojos. Simplemente sigue el aroma del pescado fresco cocinándose en la leña. Pero déjame advertirte, todo son risas y diversión hasta que el camarero trae tu plato de pescado, lo pone delante de ti, y tu comida te devuelve la mirada… con sus ojos.

Pero no te alarmes. Porque una vez que

hayas pasado el shock inicial de que tu comida tenga ojos y seas capaz de llevártela a la boca, descubrirás que realmente sabe fantástica. Sin embargo, en ese momento yo no tuve el placer de contar con un experto en chiringuitos conmigo para advertirme sobre mi almuerzo, o para decirme cómo abordarlo. Así que cuando nuestro amable camarero español, Carlos, trajo nuestro plato de sardinas al espeto entré en pánico, y mis amigos -principiantes como yo- también entraron en pánico. Y Carlos se rió. Los otros camareros hicieron corrillo alrededor de nuestra mesa riéndose, esperando a ver qué hacíamos, mientras nosotros mirábamos al plato como si un marciano acabara de aterrizar en nuestra mesa.

Sin otro plan mejor, invité a Carlos a enseñarnos cómo se come las sardinas la gente local. Así que Carlos mete las manos en mi plato y dice “mira”, y procede a mordisquear los dos lados del pescado, dejando tan sólo la cabeza y la raspa. Unos pocos segundos y estaba lista, comida y disfrutada.

and my equally inexperienced friends panicked. And Carlos just laughed. The other waiters huddled around our table to giggle at us, just waiting to see what we would do, as we stared at the plate as if a martian just landed on our table.

With no other plan, I invited Carlos to show us how the locals eat sardines. So, Carlos dips his hands into my plate and says “mira” and proceeds to nibble at both sides of the fish, leaving just the head and bare skeleton. Just a few seconds and it was done, eaten and enjoyed.

So, lesson over, my friends and I all picked up a sardine each and proceeded to copy

what Carlos did. Having finished off the first one we were on a roll. The second and third followed in quick succession and we just kept going until the plate was empty aside from the rind of my lemon, and some fish bones. Between my friends and I we managed to clear two plates of the delicious fish.

Now, in the interest of saving you the trouble of asking your friendly waiter to show you how to enjoy this local dish, here is my short ‘how to’ guide.

1. Pick it up (obviously), fingers only, absolutely no knives and forks.

2. Bend it downward so it makes a bridge formation.

3. The fishy meat-goodness should flake off of the bone just enough to get you started.

4. Eat all of the meat that comes off of the central part of the body. Skin included (that’s the best part!). Leave the tip of the tail and the head behind.

5. Repeat

Now be warned, if this is your first time too, I must tell you that it is not initially as easy as it sounds. But do perservere with it, it is so worth it.

So that was just my first ‘Spanish Sardina’ experience, and one I will remember for many years to come. At least for my second, I knew to expect the unexpected.

Entre mis amigos y yo conseguimos acabar con dos platos de este delicioso pescado. Ahora, con la intención de ahorrarte tener que pedirle a tu amable camarero que te enseñe cómo disfrutar de este plato local, aquí te traigo mi breve guía de cómo hacerlo.

1. Coge la sardina (obvio), con los dedos, nada de cuchillos ni tenedores.

2. Dóblala levemente hacía abajo para que

forme un arco.

3. La parte carnosa del pescado debería separarse de la raspa lo justo para que puedas empezar.

4. Cómete toda la carne de la parte central del pescado. La piel incluida (¡es la mejor parte!). Deja el final de la cola y la cabeza.

5. Repite. Pero quedas advertido, si esta también es tu primera vez, debo decirte que al principio no es tan sencillo como suena. Pero sigue perseverando, merece mucho la pena. Pues esta fue mi primera experiencia con la Sardina Española, y una que recordaré por muchos años. Al menos para la segunda, ya me esperaba lo inesperado. n

Buen Provecho!

Have you noticed that sometimes the waiter at a restaurant, bar or cafe in Spain will say to you “buen provecho” or “buen apetito” as they place your food in front of you? Should anyone else that you know pass by or near to you, they will also offer you the same kind words as you enjoy your food. But what does it actually mean?

Well, ‘buen apetito’ is easy to understand as it translates into English the same as the French ‘bon appétit’, meaning ‘good appetite. In English we don’t really have anything as catchy as this to offer diners, apart from perhaps ‘enjoy your meal’, but that clearly lacks something, so as a

general rule the French ‘bon appétite ‘ is often used in restaurants in England. Now ‘buen provecho’ is a little different. Literally translated, buen provecho means “good profit” or “good advantage.” However, given the context that this is said around the table when food arrives, it is taken less literally and should be interpreted the same as “good appetite”. It is interesting to note that ‘buen provecho’ is not something you will hear around a family dinner table at home, it is more for the professional dining environment. Having said that, customs vary in different parts of Spain and indeed in the Spanish speaking countries around the world, so

Here in Spain, many waiters, owners, and other staff of bars and restaurants may wish you ‘buen provecho’ instead of ‘buen apetito’ when they serve your meal as this is a more formal and well mannered way to offer you their best wishes to enjoy your meal. If you are at an eaterie that you frequent often and where you enjoy a very informal relationship with the staff, you may well find your ‘buen provecho’ will change to ‘buen apetito’, being the more relaxed and informal phrase. In the more tourist areas of Spain you may find you are offered ‘buen apetito’, even if they do not know you. This is because the staff will assume it is a more familiar phrase to you given the relationship English has with the French ‘bon appétite’.

To avoid any social mistakes, it is safer to avoid using ‘Que aproveche’ unless it is said to you first.

When you are greeted with any one of the above good wishes, your response is very simple. If they are eating too, then ‘igualmente’ (meaning, you too) will suffice. If they are not eating with you, then a polite ‘gracias’ with a smile is all you need to complete the exchange of pleasantries.
