his month OCIO magazine went to visit Per Stridth of Muebles Piramides Puerto. Over a coffee in the showroom, this is what we talked about.

Raymond: Well Per, what a difficult 12 - 18 months we have all experienced.

Per: Difficult indeed, for everyone of course,.

Never before have we experienced anything like that. Having to close the store and manage the business with zero income, with no idea of what the future was going to bring, was difficult to say the least.

Raymond: There have been some casualties of the circumstances with many businesses going out of business, but you are still here and indeed thriving.

Per: Well, as I said, difficult times but we made a conscious effort to stay positive and do whatever we had to do to prepare for a better future, whenever that was going to happen.

Raymond: You have a great team here, how did they cope with the circumstances?

Per: They were, and still are, absolutely brilliant. Even during the really difficult times, they were constantly on the phone to me asking if there was anything they could do to help. Together, we have pulled through but I must say, without them, we would not be in business today.

Raymond: Upon reopening after the first quarantine, how did it feel?

Per: Scary I think is how I would explain it. It was the uncertainty of it all and the worry of further lockdowns and continued restrictions that created the most concern.

But we remained positive, even to the point of ensuring we had as much furniture and products in stock as we possibly could.

A safer plan would have been to protect our bank balance and reduce stock, but we wanted to be ready for normality when

it returned. We knew there would be shortages and problems with raw materials and supplies, so stockpiling as much as we could get whilst we could get it, was the obvious answer as far as I was concerned.

Raymond: That sounds like a very brave, albeit risky business plan?

Per: Well yes and no. It just seemed like the obvious plan to me, We had to be ready.

The plan has paid dividends too, because as soon as we were able to trade again, we were able to service all the many orders that we had received during the months of closure and when people simply couldn’t travel.

Raymond: So now things have returned to a degree of normality, have you continued with the theme of stockpiling?

Per: Absolutely, in fact we have doubled our stock level to that of 4 years ago. We have even increased the quality on many items

and ranges to offer our clients even more choice.

Raymond: So safe to say then, that business is good?

Per: Well, in July of this year we had the best month on record in terms of sales.

The clients were there, we had the stock and we had our great team in place ready to make it all happen. It was a great month and a real indication that our plan was working.

Raymond: And the future, what do you see?

Per: I think if the last year or so has taught us anything, it is that you just never know what will happen in the future, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Together we have survived an incredible set of circumstances and come through it stronger than ever. We will continue to do what we do on a day to day basis to provide the very best products and service for our loyal clients. n

Raymond: Bueno Per, vaya 12 – 18 meses tan difíciles hemos vivido.

Per: Difíciles sin duda, para todo el mundo por supuesto. Nunca antes había vivido nada como eso. Tener que cerrar la tienda y gestionar el negocio sin ningún ingreso, sin saber qué traería el futuro, difícil es decir poco.

Raymond: Ha habido algunas bajas por las circunstancias, con muchos negocios obligados a cerrar, pero vosotros seguís

aquí y ciertamente progresando.

Per: Bueno, como decía, tiempos difíciles, pero hemos hecho un esfuerzo consciente para mantenernos positivos y hacer todo lo necesario para prepararnos para un futuro mejor, fuera cuando fuera que llegara.

Raymond: Tenéis un equipo magnífico aquí, ¿cómo lidiaron con las circunstancias?

Per: Fueron y siguen siendo absolutamente brillantes. Incluso durante los tiempos más duros, estaban siempre al teléfono conmigo, preguntando si había algo que pudieran hacer para ayudar. Juntos hemos salido adelante, pero debo decir que sin ellos no seguiríamos en el negocio hoy día.

Raymond: Acerca de la reapertura tras el primer confinamiento, ¿cómo la sentisteis?

Per: Daba miedo, creo que es cómo lo explicaría. Lo que nos creó más preocupaciones fue la incertidumbre de la situación y la preocupación por futuros confinamientos y restricciones continuadas. Pero nos mantuvimos positivos, incluso hasta el punto de asegurarnos por tener tantos muebles y productos en stock como fuera posible.

Un plan más seguro hubiera sido proteger nuestro balance de cuentas y reducir el stock, pero queríamos estar preparados para cuando volviera la normalidad. Sabíamos que habría escasez y problemas con los materiales y los suministros, así que abastecernos todo lo que pudimos mientras fuera posible era una reacción obvia desde mi punto de vista.

Raymond: Eso suena como un plan de negocios muy valiente, aunque arriesgado.

Per: Bueno, sí y no. Simplemente parecía

el plan más obvio para mí, teníamos que estar preparados. El plan también ha pagado dividendos, porque tan pronto como pudimos volver al negocio, pudimos ser capaces de dar servicio a todos los pedidos que habíamos recibido durante los meses de cierre, cuando la gente simplemente no podía moverse.

Raymond: Así que ahora que las cosas han vuelto en cierto grado a la normalidad, ¿habéis continuado con este tipo de abastecimiento?

Per: Absolutamente, de hecho hemos doblado nuestro nivel de stock en relación a hace 4 años. Incluso hemos aumentado la calidad de muchos artículos y selecciones para ofrecer a nuestros clientes aún más opciones.

Raymond: Ya a salvo por así decirlo, ¿el negocio va bien?

Per: Bueno, en julio de este año tuvimos el mejor mes registrado en términos de ventas. Los clientes estuvieron ahí, teníamos el stock y a nuestro gran equipo listo para hacer que todo funcionara. Fue un gran mes y un verdadero indicador de que nuestro plan estaba funcionando.

Raymond: Y el futuro, ¿cómo lo ves?

Per: Creo que si durante el último año o más hemos aprendido algo, es que uno nunca sabe exactamente qué puede suceder en el futuro, pero eso no es necesariamente algo malo. Hemos sobrevivido juntos a una serie de circunstancias inimaginables y hemos salido de ellas más fuertes que nunca. Continuaremos haciendo lo que hacemos, día a día, para proporcionar los mejores productos y el mejor servicio a nuestros leales clientes. n OCIO magazine

ith the cooler months ahead of us, it’s time to think about making our homes just that little bit cosier and warmer. We all love the summer and the outdoor life it gives us, but when autumn brings the end of those balmy summer nights, beach days and barbecues, we must once again focus on making the interior of our home inviting and comfortable. Over the next few months I will focus on various areas of the home and give you some helpful tips and advice from my many years experience as an interior designer. To begin on our journey, I want to start with the lounge/living room or as some 14 OCIO magazine

might call it, the family room.

Since the living/family room is the gathering space where you probably spend much of your time, you’ll want to create an especially cosy and welcoming feeling here. Fabrics that beg to be touched in rich, warm colours are instant soothers: fleece, velvet, chenille, velour, satin. There are a great variety of inexpensive throws and blankets available in these cosy fabrics. Drape them artfully over the backs of easy chairs or the arms of the sofa. Obviously, you don’t want a satin-covered couch around children (not to mention what a hard time guests would have staying put on it!), but a small, satin-

covered throw or pillow might be just the thing to wrap your arms around or rest your head upon when you’re curled up in a chair or on the sofa.

If space permits, designate a corner of the room as a reading area. A comfortable chair, a floor lamp, a small table holding a stack of books (with room for a snack or a cup of tea) are all you need to create a mini-oasis in this busy room. Other touches to include are a footstool, a cozy throw or afghan, and a magazine rack.

A game nook is another easy and fun way to invite people to sit and relax. You could designate another corner of the room for u

on los meses más fríos que se avecinan, es hora de pensar en hacer nuestras casas un poco más acogedoras y cálidas. A todos nos gusta el verano y la vida al aire libre que nos brinda, pero cuando el otoño trae consigo el fin de esas cálidas noches de verano, los días de playa y las barbacoas, debemos volver a centrarnos en hacer que el interior de nuestra casa sea acogedor y confortable. A lo largo de los próximos meses me centraré en varias áreas del hogar y os daré algunos consejos útiles de mi larga experiencia como diseñadora de interiores. Para

empezar nuestro viaje, quiero comenzar con el salón o, como algunos lo llaman, la sala de estar.

Dado que el salón/sala de estar es el espacio de reunión en el que probablemente pases gran parte de tu tiempo, querrás crear aquí una sensación especialmente acogedora. Las telas de colores vivos y cálidos, que piden ser tocadas, son un alivio inmediato: vellón, terciopelo, chenilla, raso, satén.

Hay una gran variedad de mantas y colchas baratas disponibles en estos tejidos tan acogedores. Colócalas de forma ingeniosa sobre los respaldos

de las butacas o los brazos del sofá.

Evidentemente, no querrás tener un sofá cubierto de raso cerca de los niños (por no hablar de lo mal que lo pasarían los invitados), pero un pequeño cojín cubierto de raso puede ser lo que necesitas para envolver tus brazos o descansar tu cabeza cuando estés acurrucado en una silla o en el sofá.

Si el espacio lo permite, designa un rincón de la habitación como zona de lectura. Una silla cómoda, una lámpara de pie y una mesita con una pila de libros (con espacio para un bocadillo o una taza de té) son todo lo que necesitas para crear un mini-oasis en esta ajetreada habitación. También puedes incluir un reposapiés, una manta acogedora y un revistero.

Un rincón de juegos es otra forma fácil y divertida de invitar a la gente a sentarse y relajarse. Puedes destinar otro rincón de la habitación a este fin o convertirlo en la pieza central de la misma. Coloca un par de sillas alrededor de una pequeña mesa con un juego de ajedrez, de damas o de mesa preparado para jugar. También puedes tener cerca un contenedor o una pequeña caja de juguetes con más juegos, barajas de cartas y pequeños blocs de notas y lápices (para llevar la cuenta de las partidas de gin rummy).

Arrange a couple of chairs around a small table with a chess, backgammon, or board game all set up to play. You could keep a storage bin or small toy box nearby, stocked with more games, decks of cards, and small notepads and pencils (for keeping score in those hot games of gin rummy!).

The living room will naturally feature a television but all too often this item will dominate the room and the activities that take place in it. To combat this, make sure this room has an easy to use and good quality sound system for your favourite music. The sounds eminating from the speakers will help you forget all about the TV and may just encourage you all to sit together and chat over coffee.

If you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace in your living room, use it. Nothing beats the magical feeling of being cocooned in front of the fire with the warmth from the logs seeping in through your skin. And if you are going to use logs in your fireplace then now is the time to buy them, whilst they 16 OCIO magazine

are dry from the heat of the summer.

Lighting is a key factor to making your living room a cosy and inviting place to spend time with family and friends. Lamps are ideal when strategically placed in the corners of the room but the real magic happens when you introduce candles. Just a few can have a big impact on a room’s overall atmosphere.

Candles can be a cost effective home décor item that can really pull together a room and make your guests feel at home with a welcoming aroma. No matter where you decide to place the candles, they’ll create a warmer, more welcoming environment not only for guests but for yourself too! n

Unas pocas pueden tener un gran impacto en el ambiente general de la habitación. Las velas pueden ser un elemento de decoración del hogar muy rentable que realmente puede dar vida a una habitación y hacer que tus invitados se sientan como en casa con un aroma acogedor. ost young women begin to see a gynaecologist in their teens and by the time they are in their 20’s or 30’s, they know the routine, know their bodies, and schedule regular visits. There are times, however, when abnormalities present themselves, and you wonder if you should see your doctor in between your normal visits. The answer is usually yes, and in case you’re in doubt, here are some reasons to call your gynaecologist.

Changes To Your Menstrual Flow: If your menstrual cycle has stopped, become irregular, the flow lasts too long, or if you have any changes in the flow, see your gynaecologist. Be specific about what has changed.

Blood In Your Urine: If your urine looks pink or brown or if you have pain when urinating, make an appointment. It could be something harmless or short lived, but it is always better to have it checked out.

Bad Smelling Discharge: This symptom is usually a sign of an infection. Do not think you can handle this at home, because most likely it will only get worse.

Make an appointment and get a clinical diagnosis and proper treatment.

Any New Lesion: Sometimes women experience ingrown pubic hair and it’s nothing serious, but it’s always best to be evaluated. A new sore or lesion could be a wart, herpes, or the beginning of a sexually transmitted disease. It is not something to ignore.

Painful Urination: You need to see your gynaecologist if it hurts or burns when you urinate, or have difficulty urinating, frequent urges, lower abdominal pain or no urination. These can all be signs of a urinary tract infection. Without proper treatment, it can quickly turn into a kidney infection with chills, nausea, vomiting and 20 OCIO magazine

Painful Sex: Occasionally, women can have pain during sexual intercourse. It may be due to vaginal dryness, a tear in the vagina, or an infection. Low oestrogen can cause lack of lubrication, and this can occur during breastfeeding, while on low dose birth control pills or during perimenopause. Unfortunately, painful sex might signify the development of uterine fibroids or endometriosis. See your gynaecologist to rule out these issues.

Long Lasting Pelvic Pain, Cramps, and Bloating; If it lasts longer than 2 weeks, you can rule out something you ate or from getting your period. Colitis, irritable bowel, large fibroids, and rarely cancer could be the culprit. Find out as soon as possible by scheduling an appointment.

Other reasons to see your gynaecologist before your next routine visit include the following:

Bleeding after menopause Consistent spotting after sex You lost a tampon Sharp pains in your pelvic area An annual ‘well woman’ check up with your gynaecologist should see you through all phases of womanhood and will give you peace of mind. n

Sexo doloroso: Ocasionalmente las mujeres podemos sentir dolor durante las relaciones sexuales. Puede deberse a sequedad vaginal, desgarros en la vagina, o una infección. Los estrógenos bajos pueden causar una falta de lubricación y esto puede ocurrir al dar el pecho, al estar tomando pastillas anticonceptivas o durante la perimenopausia. Desafortunadamente, el sexo doloroso también puede indicar

el desarrollo de fibromas uterinos o endometriosis. Visita a tu ginecólogo para descartar estos problemas.

Dolor pélvico prolongado, calambres e hinchazón: Si dura más de 2 semanas, puedes descartar que se deba a algo que hayas comido o al periodo. La colitis, el colon irritable, fibromas, y más raramente cáncer podrían ser los culpables. Averígualo lo antes posible concertando una cita.

There are many ways to dress so you can stay warm and still show off your fashion sense, and none of them require breaking the bank. Cupra Formentor T

his month we return once again to our friends at Sierra Rentals to test drive the fantastic Cupra Formentor. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Cupra Formentor, it is a handsome SUV that drives every bit as good as it looks. Cupra is Seat’s sporty and electrified offshoot marque, but it is not a Seat, as many people often think. Cupra is a stand alone brand, and the Formentor is a superb example of what the brand can offer to the motoring world. So that cleared up, what is it like?

Well the answer is fast, very fast, and so very comfortable. It’s well specified and roomy on the inside and features as 34 OCIO magazine

much modern safety tech as you could possibly wish for, and so it should, given that in the showrooms you will find the Cupra priced up around the 40k mark for the standard model.

We drove the Formentor up to Antequera for an overnight stay at the Magdelena Hotel, (editorial to follow in next month’s magazine), and we very were impressed with the way the four wheel drive Formentor handled both on the

motorway and on the country roads. The fun to drive dynamics and the roomy, well made cabin made the one hour journey an absolute pleasure. The look of the car turned more than a few heads too, which is not surprising given its striking appearance.

The Formentor has a multi adjustable drive programme, which is accessed by pressing a small bronze Cupra badge on the steering wheel. When pressed, you scroll through a variety of driving modes to choose from, ranging from Comfort to Cupra, with Normal, Sport and individual in between. All I can say is, unless you find yourself on a race track, don’t select u

La dinámica de conducción y el habitáculo espacioso y bien hecho, hicieron que el viaje de una

hora fuera un placer absoluto. El aspecto del coche también atrajo la atención de más de uno, lo que no es de extrañar dada su llamativa apariencia.

El Formentor cuenta con un programa de conducción multiajustable, al que se accede pulsando un pequeño distintivo bronce, de Cupra, en el volante. Cupra mode, it is nothing short of insane. It’s fun, but insane. If you select a comfort or normal drive mode however, the ride is just perfect for day to day driving. Needless to say we kept the car (mostly) in normal mode. Don’t let the word normal put you off in any way though, as even in normal mode this is still a car that wants to be driven and the endless list of safety features are equal to the task.

We thoroughly enjoyed our few days with the Cupra Formentor and, for just a small rental fee, you too could enjoy this wonderful vehicle for a few days. n this beautiful part of Spain we are fortunate enough to have access to many fantastic golf courses, many of which have been designed by some of the most famous people to ever be associated with golf. One such person is the late, great Seve Ballesteros.

Of the courses designed by Seve Ballesteros, one of our favourites is the Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club course.

This fantastic championship 18 hole course, located in the Sierra de Ronda hills, 5km north of San Pedro de Alcantara and 40 OCIO magazine

overlooking the Puerto Banus valley, offers a par 71 with 5306 metres. It is suitable for all golfers but a wide selection of clubs will be needed to complete the course with any kind of success. The tree lined fairways are always in perfect condition, no matter the season and present various strategically placed lakes, streams and bunkers to catch you out if you are not careful. So many golfers insist on using the driver at every possible opportunity, but this is a course that needs to be thought about on each and every tee, and

may require some restraint on your behalf to leave the driver in the bag and opt for a long iron on a few on the holes.

The greens are beautifully maintained and run fast and true. They are generous in size for the most part, but Seve was not going to let you off the hook that easily, and a few small greens await you.

We have played Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club several times and with each visit we are getting to know the course a little more. Our four ball of mid handicappers are beginning to understand the idea of

course management to bring in a good score and this is a course that perfectly demonstrates the need for course management.

Along with the golf course, the facilities at the Los Arqueros Golf and Country Club are also excellent with a large driving range, putting green and fully stocked pro shop. Furthermore, the restaurants, bars and terraces offer great food and good service with spectacular views of the golf course and countryside as far as the eye can see. There is also tennis, padel, a

gymnasium and even a purpose built Ten Pin Bowling suite complete with its own restaurant and bar facilities for golfers and non golfers to enjoy. n

n esta bonita zona de España tenemos la suerte de tener acceso a muchos campos de golf fantásticos, muchos de los cuales han sido diseñados por algunas de las figuras más famosas del golf. Una de estas figuras es el ya fallecido y legendario Seve Ballesteros.

De los campos diseñados por Seve Ballesteros, uno de nuestros favoritos es el campo de Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club.

Este fantástico campo de campeonato con 18 hoyos, situado en las montañas de la Sierra de Ronda, 5km al norte de San Pedro de Alcántara y con vistas al valle de Puerto Banús, ofrece un par 71 con 5.306 metros. Es adecuado para todo tipo de golfistas pero requiere una amplia selección de palos para completar el campo con éxito. Las calles alineadas por árboles están siempre en perfecto estado sin importar la estación, y presentan varios lagos estratégicamente colocados, corrientes y trampas de arena para atraparte si no tienes cuidado. Muchos golfistas insisten en utilizar el driver a cada oportunidad, pero este es un campo que necesita ser bien reflexionado en cada uno de los tees, y puede requerir algo de contención por tu parte para dejar el driver en la bolsa y optar por un hierro largo en algunos de los hoyos.

Los greens están cuidadosamente mantenidos y son rápidos. En general son de tamaño generoso, pero Seve no iba a dejar que te fueras de rositas tan fácilmente, así que también encontrarás unos cuantos greens pequeños esperándote.

Hemos jugado en Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club numerosas veces y con cada visita conseguimos conocer el campo un poco mejor. Nuestro grupo de cuatro golfistas de hándicap medio está empezando a comprender cómo enfrentar el campo para conseguir una buena puntuación, y este es un campo que demuestra perfectamente la necesidad de la precisión al manejarlo.

Además del campo de golf, las instalaciones de Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club también son excelentes, con un gran campo de práctica, un green para hacer putting y una tienda profesional completamente equipada. Además, sus restaurantes, bares y terrazas ofrecen buena comida y un gran servicio con espectaculares vistas al campo de golf y a la naturaleza allá hasta donde alcanza la vista. Pumpkin P

umpkins are not just Halloween decorations, but are a tasty and versatile vegetable. They’re cheap, nutritious and delicious.

You can eat any variety of pumpkin, gourd or squash but be aware that varieties vary wildly in taste. You may have seen pumpkins in shops labelled ‘carving pumpkins’. Don’t let the sticker lead you astray, these pumpkins are perfectly edible. However carving pumpkins have been bred to be large, thin fleshed and robust. Their taste depends on where you purchase your pumpkin. I have eaten some good carving pumpkin and some carving pumpkins that, quite frankly, taste of nothing. Carving pumpkins tend to be more watery and fibrous than other types of squash and gourd. I would recommend 48 OCIO magazine

You can eat all of the pumpkin - except for its stalk. Whether you can eat the skin or not depends on the variety. Smaller varieties such as onion squash have deliciously edible skin, the skin of larger varieties may be too tough to eat or less than appealing. For types such as the butternut squash, whether you eat the skin or not is down to personal taste. Pumpkins

Peel away the skin and you’ve got a hunk of the good stuff. The flesh of big pumpkins is perfect for soups and curries. The flesh of petit pumpkins, squash and gourds is best suited for pies, breads and cakes - although it’s also delicious in a soup. Smaller pumpkins tend to be more flavoursome, less fibrous and less watery. Remember this when shopping and you will come away with the right pumpkin for your cooking requirements.

Seeds - don’t throw away those seeds. They are not only tasty with soups and salads and a convenient snack they are also a wonderfully nutritious food that’s very rich in zinc. They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols, and free-radical scavenging antioxidants, which can give your health an added boost. Simmer them in salted water for 10 minutes and then bake in a hot oven until brown.

When carving your pumpkin, scrape out the insides and steam (or blanche) these bits of pumpkin flesh and freeze them for another day. Steamed pumpkin flesh and raw pumpkin flesh will last a few days in the fridge.

and you can no longer safely eat it. An uncarved pumpkin however, will last quite a while, especially if stored in a cool dry place. n

or a lot of people, music is everything. I myself can’t imagine my life without music, whether it got me through a hard time, pumped me up during a workout, or calmed me down before an important meeting. Although lots of people listen to music on their phones and on their systems at home, etc., most people don’t engage in the art of live music. Live music is a genre all of its own, and each show is an experience.

I’ve written many an article about live music, but I think it’s an important aspect of music and form of art that is often 52 OCIO magazine

under appreciated. As a concert junkie, I’ll take it upon myself to explain the appeal of live music.

The beauty of live music is that no two concerts or shows are alike. Even if the artist plays the same set list twice in a row, there is always some variation. The crowd changes and the mood of the performer will change with it. There are so many hidden factors that go into a live performance that allow each show to be a unique experience. This is why I like to think of concerts as art pieces, it’s performance art.

Live music also depends on the audience’s participation. One show can vastly differ from another based simply on the audience. I love going to multiple shows by the same artist. I get to see the same act two, three or even four different times, with different people and hopefully, a different setlist. Especially for interactive performers, it’s cool to see how each show differs depending on what the audience wants to hear and how in favour of the artist they are.

El público cambia y el estado de ánimo del artista cambia con él. Hay muchos factores ocultos en una actuación en directo que permiten que cada espectáculo sea una experiencia única. Por eso me gusta pensar que los conciertos son obras de arte, es arte de interpretación.

La música en directo también depende de la participación del público. Un espectáculo puede diferir enormemente de otro, simplemente por el público. Me encanta ir a varios espectáculos del mismo artista. Puedo ver el mismo acto dos, tres o incluso cuatro veces diferentes, con gente distinta y, con suerte, con una lista de canciones diferente. Especialmente en el caso de los espectáculos interactivos, es genial ver cómo cada uno de ellos difiere en función de lo que el público quiere escuchar y de lo que le gusta el artista.

We get to see what they like to wear, how they speak, their mannerisms, and the songs they like to perform. No matter how big the concert venue, this makes it an intimate experience. A concert can be seen as a learning experience about that artist and their music.

A concert is a fun thing to go to with family and friends. If you like live music, like me, you’ll go to any show no matter who is performing just to hear live music.

Watching others play instruments is truly an appreciation of a talent I wish I had.

Big concerts with big artists are not cheap to attend in most cases, but they provide priceless experiences that you will remember forever. Having said that, you do not need to spend all of your hard earned cash to go travelling the country to see great live music, it is right here on your doorstep.

As any live music fan will tell you, here in Southern Spain there is a fantastic culture of live music with artists and musicians performing all along the coast and inland.
