Horrific murder punished

A Phomolong man has been successfully convicted and sentenced to 23 years ’ imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend in 2024

Sabata Isaac Masa (37) was found guilty and sentenced to a lengthy term of direct imprisonment

On 26 October last year, at about 18:26, Palesa Suzan Katane (31) was at her boyfriend’s residence in Phomolong when a dispute erupted The argument escalated, resulting in Masa physically and sexually assault-

ing Katane He then fatally assaulted Katane by attacking her with a garden spade

Hennenman Police were immediately dispatched to the scene, where Katane was certified dead

Masa was arrested on the day of the incident

The investigation into the murder was handled by Sgt Sethabela Moroenyane of the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, and the matter was subsequently

brought before the Free State High Court sitting in Welkom

The sentence handed down to Masa sends a strong message that violence against women, particularly domestic and sexual abuse, will be met with the full might of the law

The conviction represents another step in the ongoing efforts to address gender-based violence (GBV) and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions through the criminal justice system

Paaie niks om te vier

MARTI WILL

FOCUS PLACED ANEW ON LOCAL ECONOMIC GROWTH

The oversight of the District Municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) strategies will be intensified so as to ensure that projects are properly implemented, funded, and benefit local communities

“Local Economic Development (LED) plays a vital role in promoting economic growth, job creation, and reducing poverty within local communities ” said Cllr Mahalia Kose, DA councillor in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality

“In this municipality, the LED efforts are critical for revitalising the district’s economy following the decline of traditional industries such as mining, farming and other formal sectors

“However, the municipality continues

to face several challenges that limit its developmental potential ”

Kose says that the loss of mining jobs has left many households without income, contributing to the widespread poverty and social dependency

“Mining was once the backbone of the local economy The closure and downsizing of mines in towns like Welkom Virginia, and Odendaalsrus have led to economic stagnation, reduced municipal revenue, and loss of investor confidence,” said Kose

Despite the district having LED strategies and Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), the involvement of the municipalities within the district often hinders the

pace of implementation

Other factors include funding shortages poor coordination among stakeholders and weak monitoring mechanisms

The district LED committee recently held a workshop on strategies to support local municipalities’ economic growth

“We will, through the district, strive to create a favourable business environment to attract potential investors to establish public-private partnerships (PPPs) to fund and implement key development projects

“We will place greater focus on funding to participate in these initiatives and processes to help alleviate potential corruption,” Kose has undertaken

Kaptein se wilskrag gee haar moed in die stryd teen kanker

MARTI WILL

“My werk hou my besig, maar emosioneel is dit soos ’ n wipplank My werkgewer, my kollegas, my vriende en veral my familie ondersteun my, ” sê sy

se kanker in remissie gegaan

“My werk was nog altyd my anker, die standvastigheid in my lewe Glo my, ek sal nooit verby ’ n ongeluk- of misdaadtoneel kan gaan sonder om te stop nie Ek sal altyd my werk doen”

Crime-fighting efforts do not go without notice

The International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI), Southern African branch, awarded Const Sthembiso Goodman Bulose of the Welkom Vehicle Crime Identification Unit (VCIU) with the Best Carjacking Investigator of the Year award for his outstanding investigative work on a complex carjacking case

Jesus is also in the boat, amid storm

Matthew 8:26 reads: He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm

Recently, I found myself on an island in Europe One night, the island was battered by howling gale-force winds

They were ferocious, raging all night long When I woke up in the morning, the winds had dropped, leaving an eerie stillness

This experience reminded me of how Jesus rebuked the winds and the waves ushering complete calmness in Matthew 8:26

I thought about the storms that hit our lives

These may be an illness, death in the family, losing a job, marriage woes, failure to achieve certain grades at school, work promotion not materialising, or any other such relentless concerns that create inner turmoil

Imagine a world without these worries

It would have been easier for me to tell you that such a world exists

Unfortunately, the truth is that Jesus himself, in John 16:33, warned that we would have problems and James, the apostle, wrote that trials would come to test our faith

Despite this, the good news is that in Isaiah 43:2 God promised to be with and protect his people through life’s difficult waters and challenges

To embrace this promise, I encourage you to maintain an open and honest dialogue with God through prayer

Read and meditate on scriptures Believe and trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness

Jesus’ inner circle consisted of his disciples, following suit surround yourself with supportive believers Finally, surrender your will to God’s, obeying his commands and living according to his word

Above all else, let me assure you that when you seek him with all your heart, you find him He is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit In fact, Jesus is in the boat with you, call out to him

There is no wind nor storm too rough for him
