ARMED robbers struck Phaphani High School in KwaNobuhle on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, terrorising School Governing Body members and the principal during a critical matriculant examination preparation camp, raising urgent questions about school safety protocols across the province

The brazen daylight attack, which occurred despite the presence of an unarmed security guard, has prompted serious concerns about whether the residential camp programme can continue safely, and what immediate measures the Department of Education will implement to protect vulnerable school communities

With matriculants’ final examinations already in session, education officials now face mounting pressure to provide concrete answers about security upgrades, psychological

support for traumatised learners and staff, and comprehensive safety strategies to prevent similar incidents from derailing critical educational programmes at schools throughout the region

SAPS KwaNobuhle confirmed that a case of business robbery was opened following the incident at the high school in Mondile Street, KwaNobuhle, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 29 October 2025

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said that according to information gathered on the aforementioned date at about 17:30, “Six unknown males wearing reflector jackets entered the school boardroom during a meeting between teachers and the school governing body One suspect, armed with a firearm, instructed everyone to lie down ”

She added that the suspects stole nine mobile phones, three laptops, and forced the

complainant to make several money transfers

“They also fled with a maroon Haval H2, which was later recovered on Hashe Street that day

The investigation is ongoing,” Janse Van Rensburg concluded

Following this incident, Uitenhage District

Taxi Association spokesperson, Lubabalo Vesele, said, “We as the UDTA promise protection for all 2025 matriculation camp sites within Kariega, whether you are in Despatch, Langa, KwaNobuhle, or Nobuhlo Mdala As long as you operate a registered study camp for matriculation 2025, we ask all those responsible to register with the sector police or Sergeant Kia Kamba, a sector police officer from KwaNobuhle, so that our patrols can be aware of your location and conduct regular visits ”

He added that this act of protecting local schools or matriculation campsites is provided free of charge by the taxi association

“Nothing is required from anyone except to

appreciate the position that the taxi industry, especially the leadership, has taken over this project of protecting the community and the learners in our local schools ” He added, “We are working hand-in-hand with the police, and the metro police have promised to join us so that we can form a formidable force ”

Vesele said that the UDTA is not aware of who the perpetrators of the incident at Phaphani High School could be “We do not have any information and are relying on police detectives to conduct a proper investigation ”

He concluded, “Our message to the Kariega community is that we, as the UDTA, put people first We are willing to share our resources in order to combat crime and assist people in fighting criminality in our area ”

The Eastern Cape Department of Education was approached for comment but did not respond at the time of going to print

TO close off Transport Month, the Sundays River Valley Municipality’s (SRVM) Traffic Unit recently partnered the Provincial Department of Transport, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the South African National Parks (SANPARKS) to host a roadblock at Preston Park along the N10 route between Nanaga and Paterson

According to the SRVM’s Mayor, Solethu Lucas, “The operation aimed to promote road safety through routine checks, including the verification of drivers licences, driver fitness, vehicle roadworthiness, and thorough inspections for the transportation of illegal items ”

Over 100 vehicles were stopped during the operation for the above-mentioned checks, demonstrating the commitment to ensuring road safety standards

“Similar operations will continue as we approach the festive season, when many people will be travelling across the country to visit family and friends,” he added

The municipality encourages motorists to visit the Traffic Department in Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood) to ensure that their driving documents are in order, their vehicles are roadworthy, and any outstanding fines are paid to avoid inconvenience during this busy period

Fines can be paid using various payment methods for the convenience of all motorists

Drivers are also urged to exercise caution, take regular rest breaks, and adhere to all road safety regulations to ensure they reach their destinations safely Road safety remains a shared responsibility requiring cooperation from all road users

Over 100 vehicles were stopped and checked during the operation for the drivers’ documentation.

SHANTI JAFTA

A MAJOR R300 million technological transformation is underway along national roads in the Eastern Cape, as the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) rolls out an extensive network of solar-powered concrete poles designed to revolutionise highway management and safety

According to SANRAL spokesperson, Lwando Mahlasela, these vandal-resistant installations, costing between R1 million and R1 5 million each, are being strategically positioned along key routes, including the N2 from Baywest to Coega, the R335 from N2 through Motherwell, and the R75 from N2 to Kariega “These are concrete poles, not steel or metal They are vandal-proof and long-lasting “The poles are therefore strong enough to carry solar panels, electronics boxes, and surveillance cameras,” Mahlasela told PE Express

Far more than simple lighting fixtures, these sophisticated poles form the backbone of SANRAL’s new Freeway Management System (FMS), equipped with CCTV cameras, electronic message boards, and advanced monitoring technology

The system has four core objectives:

Congestionmanagement

The system actively monitors traffic flow patterns through advanced camera technology and traffic detectors, identifying bottlenecks in real-time

This allows traffic management centres to implement dynamic responses such as adjusting traffic signal timing and deploying alternative route recommendations

Incidentidentificationandmanagement

Sophisticated surveillance cameras equipped with infrared technology can automatically detect when vehicles have stopped unexpectedly, accidents have occurred, or debris has fallen onto the roadway

This immediate detection capability means emergency responders can be dispatched within minutes, potentially saving lives through faster medical response

Real-timeinformationdissemination

Electronic message boards mounted on the poles provide motorists with up-to-the-minute information about road conditions, travel times, incidents ahead, and alternative routes

This information is simultaneously fed to traffic apps like Waze and Google Maps, SANRAL's website, and commercial radio stations

Securityandvandalismprevention

The continuous surveillance capability specifically targets copper theft and infrastruc-

RosedaleClinic reopenedafter102days

AFTER the Rosedale Clinic in Acacia Road, Kariega, was closed for just over 100 days, residents of Rosedale can now receive health care at their original clinic

In the interim, the clinic was operating from nearby temporary locations: the Tambo Multipurpose Centre and V G K Hall, serving as a community centre and church respectively

The original clinic was closed owing to the escalating gun violence in the area Ward 49 Councillor Georgen Miggels, who spearheaded the relocation and reopening of the clinic, said that the demands of the staff members had been met

UD Express previously published that the staff had demanded a safer working environment

The Department of Health spokesperson, Siyanda Manana, shared that “The staff wanted to be guaranteed safety That is the only guarantee they need; a SAPS mobile or satellite stationed out-

side the clinic ” Miggels confirmed that this demand was met by the department Miggels added that although the staff demanded armed security, the facility is gun-free; however, a SAPS patrol vehicle will be stationed at the clinic for the patients’ and staff’s safety SAPS spokesperson Captain André Beetge, confirmed that a SAPS Kamesh police vehicle will be in the area of Rosedale in light of continued crime incidents in the area

“It is not to be stationary at the clinic or near the clinic specifically, but it will be patrolling all the hotspots in Rosedale which include the clinic,” he said

“The patrol vehicle will also be stationary at four-way stops at the discretion of the visible policing commander when informed about crimes that are occurring in the area ” Beetge concluded, “SAPS continues to urge the clinic to have their own security deployed on their premises ”
