A groundbreaking programme was launched at the Amanzi Private Game Reserve near Winnie Mandela (Brandfort) that will give a huge boost to the international research on giraffes.
With this step, the University of the Free State (UFS) is taking wildlife research to new heights
At the launch at the reserve on 29 October, a first-of-its-kind, dedicated Giraffe Research Programme was introduced This will be committed to the advancement of international scientific collaboration in study and conservation
The launch marks the next phase in a research journey that has already placed the UFS at the forefront of giraffe science and research excellence
Over the past decade, a team of researchers, led by Prof Francois Deacon of the Department of Animal Science, has made significant contributions to understanding giraffe behaviour,
physiology and ecology
Despite their towering presence on the African continent, giraffes are quietly disappearing Today, fewer than 100 000 remain in the wild a sobering reminder that their future is far from secure and that research excellence like this is key to ensure their survival
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as vulnerable, with populations declining by more than 40% over the past three decades
This new infrastructure at Amanzi combines on-site research laboratories with spacious, stress-free habitats In this hands-on environment, veterinarians, scientists and students can work closely with giraffes
Over the past seven years, Deacon’s team has conducted 254 successful sedations and captures, carefully building the expertise needed for the next delicate step: the first embryo transfer in wild giraffes Deacon explained the need to provide a safe and controlled environment for research In an encampment that was built at the main building of Amanzi, researchers hope

bewus was nie "

Following constructive engagement between the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Executive Management Committee (Exco) and student leadership structures, an agreement was reached on the phasing out of provisional registration
This comes after protests and incidents of arson and violence on the Qwaqwa campus on 13 October that resulted in damage to property
Two staff members were assaulted, one student was injured, and 37 security officers were injured two of whom were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU)
Following a safety risk assessment, the campus was closed on 14 October and students were requested to temporarily vacate university residences within 24 hours
Students were subsequently allowed
to return to the campus from 22 October after safety was restored
Lacea Loader, senior director of communications and marketing at the UFS, said the university deeply regrets these events and continues to provide support to the affected staff
The protests came after the UFS reviewed the provisional registration process and found that it no longer serves its original intended purpose to allow academically deserving but financially constrained students to continue their studies, while making plans to settle outstanding debt
“As a result of the review, it became clear that modifications needed to be made expeditiously and that a fairer, equitable, and financially sustainable support system for students should be implemented,” Loader said in a news statement
Loader said the decision to phase out provisional registration approved by the UFS Council on 26 September addresses the financial pressures facing
both students and the institution The university’s exco, the Institutional Student Representative Council, and the Campus Student Representative Councils have jointly agreed on a phased implementation of Council’s decision, to phase out provisional registration over two years in 2026-’27 This will allow concessions for students with outstanding debt, and ensure that all registered students have access to their official academic records
This agreement confirms the council’s decision to bring an end to provisional registration As of 1 January 2028, all students will be fully registered “The university extends its appreciation to staff, students, and all stakeholders for their patience, commitment, and resilience during this challenging period The UFS is focused on the successful completion of the 2025 academic year and looks forward to continuing constructive engagement with student leadership and the broader university community,” Loader said
It is becoming increasingly clear that the ANC in Mangaung is desperate to protect its own, even at the expense of council integrity and public trust
This is according to Dirk Kotzé, DA council member in the Mangaung Metro
Kotzé says the DA expressed its concern following the ANC caucus ’ decision to oppose the tabling or debate of the Motion of No Confidence in Speaker Cllr Bongani Mathae within the Council during the latest meeting on Thursday, 30 October
“The DA caucus will report this breach of the Standing Rules and Orders to our representatives in the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) portfolio and request an investigation into the conduct of the chairperson and the ANC caucus, ” he said The motion against Matae was already directed to serve in council in May, said Kotzé

of the Free State, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, have been under investigation by the Hawks for alleged corruption According to reports, the Hawks have subsequently transferred the case to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further proceedings”
Kotzé said that instead of ensuring that legitimate motions are dealt with fairly and in line with Rule 29, the chairperson and ANC councillors used procedural excuses to suppress open debate, once again demonstrating that the ANC’s priority is to defend its financial and political interests rather than uphold good governance
“It is becoming increasingly clear that the ANC in Mangaung is desperate to protect its own, even at the expense of council integrity and public trust This desperation stems from years of corruption and mismanagement that have left the municipality bankrupt and residents without proper service delivery

He said the ANC's decision to oppose the tabling or dabate of the motion, raises concerns regarding transparency, accountability, and adherence to the Standing Rules and Orders governing
this Council The chairperson of the Section 79 Oversight Committee for Motions and Petitions, Cllr Molefe Morake, did not fully comply with these rules, resulting in a process in which political considerations may have influenced the outcome
“The DA wishes to inform residents of Mangaung that Speaker Bongani Mathae and his spouse, the Premier
“We will continue to fight for transparent governance, accountable leadership, and a council that serves the residents, not the interests of a collapsing ANC”

With a career spanning more than 20 years in higher education, Rodny-Gumede has held fellowships at universities in South Africa and abroad She is actively involved in teaching, executive training, and development initiatives at institu-
tional, national and international levels

Additions to the War Museum of the Boer Republics in Bloemfontein always give visitors to this award-winning museum something new to look forward to
The building of a life-sized three-storey blockhouse from the Anglo-Boer War (1899 to 1902) on the grounds is almost complete and will give a new perspective on the living conditions in and around these buildings erected by the British forces to protect the railway lines from Boer attacks
Lord Roberts, who was the British commander-in-chief in the field from January to November 1900, believed the war would end once the capitals of the Boer Republics were captured The Boers, however, were determined to continue their struggle after the fall of the capital cities The Tierpoort structure was one of around 8 000 blockhouses of different sizes across the country and housed around 85 000 soldiers at the time of the war The Boer attacks by means of guerrilla warfare targeted the British supply lines which were mainly the railway lines This led to the blockhouses being built all along the railway lines
This blockhouse is a replica of a blockhouse at Riversford (Tierpoort) about 50km south of Bloemfontein It was one of two eight-sided sandstone blockhouses built to protect the railway line from Cape Town to Bloemfontein
Bloemfontein artist Hennie van Zyl drafted the basic plans for the blockhouse He also started on a scale model of the terrain on which the blockhouses were situated Van Zyl delved into the historic facts and photos available on the lives of the soldiers It included their water and food sources, their routines and recreational activities at these lone outposts that criss-crossed the country
Van Zyl spared no trouble creating the finest detail from the grass patches of the southern Free State to the shiny river, tents that provided additional accommodation and soldiers cooking food or tending to the horses
The blockhouse and its exhibits will be opened on 27 November
The museum is open on weekdays from 08:00 to 16:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00 On Sundays the museum is open from 11:00 to 17:00, and on public holidays from 09:00 to 17:00
Guided tours are provided on appointment

Businesses at the Tempe Airfield, as well as the community of Groenvlei, have lodged complaints against the intention of the Mangaung Metro to sell Tempe Airport to a private estate Johan Pretorius, DA Councillor and the DA in Mangaung’s spokesperson on economic development, says more than 50 written objections were submitted, reflecting deep concern regarding the metro’s apparent disregard for due process, transparency, and public participation
Tempe Airfield is one of 14 assets in the metro that have been advertised, inviting public input These assets include Naval Hill The process closed end of October
In response to numerous inquiries by the media Sello More, city manager, said the tender was aimed at leveraging growth in the city’s assets This, while many of the businesses at Tempe Airfield generate good income not only for business, but for the city itself
Pretorius says the DA believes the proposed alienation of these strategic municipal assets is procedurally flawed and potentially unlawful
Tempe Airfield is a certified and operational airport under the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Any attempt to repurpose this site would undermine its aviation status, threaten local jobs, and erode a part of Bloemfontein’s transport and economic infrastructure
Recently, a notice was circulated to hangar owners and tenants indicating that no lease agreements would be renewed, as the metro had received formal expressions of interest from external parties in the airport land currently occupied by hangars and

aviation-related businesses
Another occupier is the Bloemfontein Gliding Club Riaan Bezuidenhout of the club says no communication from the metro is forthcoming
“The Tempe Airfield is a strategic and high-value municipal asset of significant regional and national importance to general aviation in South Africa Over the years, lessees and users have personally invested in the maintenance and improvement of airport infrastructure, contributing to its ongoing functionality and safety”
Bezuidenhout says this club alone invested millions in infrastructure and maintenance of the runways without the municipality support or assistance
“Runway 33 was developed out of our own funds This adds value to the whole flying community The club moved to the New Tempe Airfield in 1985 and is the oldest club here”
Bezuidenhout says it is now the beginning of the gliding season, and members are flying in from across the world to spend time in Bloemfontein in the coming months On a yearly basis, international glider pilots fly in to use the facilities in Bloemfontein
From November to January each year, due to the good soaring conditions around Bloemfontein, the Tempe Airfield is sought after These yearly financial injections into the local economy happens via spending on accommodation, food, entertainment, fuel, aircraft hire and vehicle hire, to name but a few
Pretorius also points out that Tempe Airfield is an important refueling stop between Johannesburg and Cape Town
“We strongly condemn the Municipality’s failure to consult affected tenants, aviation stakeholders, and the local community before pursuing this
plan The DA calls for the immediate suspension of all actions related to the proposed sale and demands a transparent, lawful process that protects this vital public asset”
More said that Tempe Airport “has turned into a quad bike venue ”
“What a waste,” he stated in his news release
The Bloemfontein Off Road Club (Borc) has hosted numerous worldclass national, regional and and club-level events and is recognised as one of the top motocross facilities in South Africa Anton Engelbrecht, Borc chairman, said should the municipality proceed with the disposal of this land, it would result in the loss of the only operational motocross venue in the Free State, effectively ending all formal off-road motorsport activities in the region
Furthermore, Tempe Airfield houses the SAPS Airwing and is a
