RAZAAN PLAATJIES

THE Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Sello Seitlholo, and Yusuf Cassim, DA EC Provincial Chairperson, conducted an oversight inspection at the recently refurbished KwaNomzamo Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) in Humansdorp on 31 October

The facility underwent extensive upgrades after being previously vandalised

According to Cassim, the extensive upgrade to the KwaNomzamo WWTW at a cost of R42 million was supported by the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) He said that it was officially commissioned in September 2025 and has now entered the testing and optimisation stage of commissioning to ensure that all the requisite systems operate within the required operational standards

“With a treatment capacity of 4 million litres per day, the modernised plant now serves multiple communities and is expected to benefit more than 2,200 households This significantly improves sanitation services and environmental protection in the Kouga Municipality,” said Cassim Jacques du Toit, Project Management Unit manager, said that they have prioritised the continuation of maintenance of all water treatment centres and have implemented the necessary security measures to prevent further vandalism

He said that they have installed state-of-theart walls, high-tech cameras, and increased the number of security guards on site Du Toit has also encouraged residents to take a hand with the municipality to ensure the safeguarding of the wastewater treatment

centre

“The KwaNomzamo WWTW was previously vandalised, which was the reason for the refurbishment The plant is now operational,” said Du Toit

The site visit included viewing the water channels and a new control room

Cassim also revealed that they conducted an oversight inspection at the impressive Paradise Beach Water Tower, a R9 7 million investment

In partnership with the Eastern Cape government, Kouga Municipality also recently launched a multi-million-rand infrastructure project to restore reliable sanitation services to Hankey’s Weston community

Phase 1 of the Weston WWTW project is valued at R20 7 million

Cassim said that the municipality also completed a R4 89 million upgrade of the Hankey WWTW, improving operational efficiency and on-site security

He said that in 2024, Kouga reopened the Gill Marcus WWTW in Humansdorp after nearly R5 million in upgrades

Furthermore, Cassim said that last year, four new water purification plants were completed, the largest municipal facilities in Africa to use this advanced purification method

He said that the municipality has also drilled more than 30 boreholes

“With the new purification plants up and running, the municipality has cut its reliance on dam water from 70% to just 30% The remaining 70% now comes from underground sources such as springs and boreholes,” said Cassim

“This means Kouga is well protected from ever facing a true Day Zero ”

Homeshandedovertodestitutefamilies

EASTERN Cape Human Settlements MEC, Siphokazi Lusithi, handed over 28 newly built homes to destitute families on 31 October in Oceanview, Jeffreys Bay, including beneficiaries living with disabilities.

The handover forms part of the provincial Human Settlements Month programme, which features various service delivery activities throughout October in commemoration of Joe Slovo.

“We handed over 28 houses, which prioritise the elderly and people living with disabilities. We also had an opportunity to engage with the beneficiaries who are affected and give them progress on the project. This project is important as it’s restoring the dignity of the most vulnerable in our society,”said Lusithi.

The beneficiaries had been living in dire conditions in an informal settlement that left them vulnerable.

Among those who received a new home was 40-year-old Jeremy Honeybrook, who relies on crutches for walking.

“I feel so lucky to get this house. I am very happy. I don’t know how to explain how I am feeling, I am truly grateful,” said Hon-

eybrook. The Department built a 45-square-metre house designed to accommodate his needs, including ramps for easy access.

Honeybrook previously lived with his mother and brother in a shack, surviving on social and disability grants.

Another beneficiary who received her house, Busisiwe Magwanya, had been living with her family of 10 in a rented two-bedroom house in Oceanview, Jeffreys Bay. Due to her poor health, the living conditions were unsuitable.

“This feels like a dream. I never thought I would have a house This has always been my wish to have my own place. I’m thankful to the government for this house,” said Magwanya

She relies on a disability grant as her main source of income.

Oceanview’s 1,500 housing units are the Department’s project in Jeffreys Bay, aimed at transforming informal settlements into integrated urban settlements.

The project is implemented in phases, with 568 units to be constructed in this current phase.

Mangets44yearsforbrutal Patensiefarmattack

THE Hankey Regional Court has sentenced Shaun Geswindt (24) to an effective 44 years’ imprisonment for a violent and calculated farm attack that left a 70-year-old farmer severely injured and traumatised

According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, the incident occurred on 6 February 2022 at Connie Muller Farm, Kwagga in Patensie, where the victims, an elderly couple, were brutally attacked inside their farmhouse

The wife, who was wheelchair-bound and unable to walk, has since passed away Tyali said that during the early hours of the morning, Geswindt and his accomplices, Leon Maphethwana and Sakumzi Maarman, forced their way into the farmhouse

“They assaulted the 70-year-old husband, robbed the couple of cash, firearms, and other valuables, and kidnapped the husband, leaving him for dead in nearby bushes close to Jeffreys Bay,” said Tyali

“He was later found alive after managing to free himself and seek help ”

Tyali said that all three perpetrators were arrested shortly after the attack, following swift investigative work by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the dedicated efforts of the prosecution team

Maphethwana and Maarman pleaded guilty on 18 September 2023 to the same charges and were sentenced to a combined 94 years’ imprisonment Each received 47 years, with some counts running concurrently

Tyali said that Geswindt, who personally knew the victims and had grown up near their farm, pleaded not guilty, claiming that he had been coerced into participating in the crimes

“The court further found that Geswindt actively participated in the planning and execution of the robbery, noting that he had multiple opportunities to withdraw from the crime or report it to the police but failed to do so His familiarity with the victims made him a key enabler in the group’s plan,” said Tyali He said that the matter was prosecuted by Regional Court Prosecutor Liezel Landman, who presented compelling evidence, including ballistic and fingerprint reports, corroborated by the testimony of the surviving victim

Geswindt was convicted and sentenced as follows: seven years’ imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rob, 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, three years’ imprisonment for kidnapping and seven years’ imprisonment for possession of a firearm and ammunition

Additionally, he received 10 years’ for attempted murder and two years for theft

Tyali said that Geswindt was also declared unfit to possess a firearm Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, welcomed the sentence and praised the prosecution and investigation teams for their unwavering commitment to justice

“This sentence delivers a firm and uncompromising message that those who commit violent crimes against the elderly and vulnerable will face the full might of the law,” said Madolo “Such acts of cruelty have no place in our society The NPA will continue to act decisively against perpetrators who threaten the safety, dignity, and peace of our rural communities ”

However, the court found his account fabricated and inconsistent, rejected his defence of coercion, and held that he acted in common purpose with his accomplices

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

JEFFREYS Bay will come together on 11 November to honour the memory of fallen soldiers and the often-forgotten animal heroes who served alongside them during times of war

The Flak Moth Shellhole will host a fitting parade of remembrance at 10:30 at the Moth Memorial on the corner of Heid and Da Gama Streets

Deon van Heerden, event organiser, said that as part of the event, they will host a parade where Moth members will march and then hoist and lower the Moth flag and the South African flag

Furthermore, he said that they will observe two minutes of silence, read a scripture and partake in prayer, followed by wreath laying by interested parties or individuals and organisations

“Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of the First World War hostilities Hostilities ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month

KAREEDOUW:

of 1918,” said Van Heerden

While Remembrance Day traditionally honours armed forces members who died in the line of duty, this year’s ceremony will also acknowledge the sacrifices made by animals during wartime

Van Heerden also emphasised the historical significance of animal contributions to military efforts

“Homing pigeons were extensively used in the two world wars In World War II, about 250,000 homing pigeons were used,” said Van Heerden

“Dogs served alongside soldiers in various roles, acting as loyal companions, sentinels, messengers, and even first aid providers Horses in World War I were essential for troop movement, pulling artillery and supply carts over difficult terrain ”

Van Heerden said that the recognition of animal service members through Purple Poppy Day, typically observed on 24 February, remains relatively unknown in South Africa

“I know of only one event in South Africa which was held It took place in Durban

I don’t know why it does not receive the attention it deserves,” said Van Heerden

Further elaborating on the Flak Shellhole, he said that it has been serving the Jeffreys Bay community for approximately 27 years

Van Heerden said that the Jeffreys Bay branch was formed as members had to travel to Gqeberha for events

“Each year, every Moth shellhole holds its own celebration on this day Every unit decides on its format Only towns that have a shellhole do the event There are just a few shellholes in this province,” said Van Heerden

He said that members of the public, those wishing to honour fallen family members, friends or animals, and organisations, are invited to attend the parade on 11 November

Van Heerden further said that tokens of remembrance can be laid after the official wreaths have been laid

JONATHAN Jantjies from Kareedouw was honoured as Best Security Officer at Humansdorp Traffic Department, on 17 October, in a distinguished ceremony celebrating outstanding service, recognising his exceptional commitment to maintaining safety and order at his workplace Jantjies, known for his professionalism and attention to detail, has earned the admiration of his colleagues and superiors alike. His ability to manage security with a calm and efficient approach has made him a reliable and respected figure within the Traffic department.

A significant influence in his life and career has been his uncle, Jacobus Jantjes, a military veteran who served as both a mentor and role model.

His uncle’s guidance instilled in him the values of discipline, and Jonathan credits much of his success to the lessons he learned from his uncle, which shaped his approach to security and his commitment to duty

“My uncle has always been my inspiration,” said Jantjies.

“He taught me that true strength comes

from character and service to others, which is a philosophy I carry with me every day.”

However, the foundation of his character extends beyond his uncle.

His parents, James and Cynthia Rollison, played a pivotal role in shaping his sense of respect and dignity

From a young age, Jantjies was taught the importance of treating others with kindness and upholding values of integrity and honour.

“My parents always reminded me that dignity is not something you are given; it is something you earn through your actions.”

Stefan Petersen, a senior official at the Humansdorp Traffic Department, praised Jantjies for his exceptional dedication and ability to maintain a secure environment while fostering positive relationships with those he serves.

“Jonathan’s approach to his work reflects his upbringing as a man of integrity, respect, and unwavering commitment,” said Petersen.

Members of the public frequently commend Jantjies for his kindness, efficiency, and the positive atmosphere he brings to the Humansdorp Traffic Department since he started working there.

Looking to the future, he remains focused on personal growth and hopes to inspire others, particularly young people in the community, to follow his example of hard work, respect, and dedication to service

“Every day, I try to embody the values my parents and my uncle taught me Respect for others and for the role you play is the foundation of any success.”

His distinguished career in the field of security stands as a testament to his dedication, professionalism, and leadership.

Through years of service and commitment, he has earned respect across the industry for his integrity and excellence

Yet, beyond the titles and achievements, his story is deeply inspiring and a reminder that greatness can come from humble beginnings.

From the small town of Kareedouw, he has proven that something truly remarkable can emerge from such humble beginnings, inspiring others to dream big and rise above circumstances.

Woorde soos karsinoom, melanoom, gewas, kanker, narkotiseur, onkoloog, ginekoloog, versprei, histologie en chemo vlieg oor my kop

Let’s do it!

KOUGA Local Municipality has once again cemented its reputation as one of South Africa’s leading coastal destinations, proudly earning four prestigious coastal awards for the 2025/2026 season

The municipality achieved full Blue Flag Status for Dolphin Beach in Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis Beach, reaffirming Kouga’s dedication to maintaining world-class standards of safety, cleanliness, and environmental care

In addition, Kouga was recognised for its Green Coast sites in partnership with the JBay Surf Alliance, namely the JBay Supertubes and Paradise Beach coastline

These accolades highlight Kouga’s commitment to balancing tourism development with the protection of its natural coastal ecosystems

The announcement was made by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) at the official Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards Ceremony held in Port Alfred on 31 October, where 97 coastal sites were honoured for their excellence in sustainable coastal management and tourism

The Blue Flag Programme, now celebrating 25 years in South Africa, recognises beaches, marinas, and boats that meet international standards of water quality, environmental management, safety, and education

Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman

said Bornman

“We are honoured to once again see Kouga’s beaches flying the Blue Flag, a mark of excellence that attracts both local and international visitors ”

He further emphasised the importance of collaboration in maintaining these world-class standards

“These achievements would not be possible without the dedication of our municipal staff, the JBay Surf Alliance, and the passionate residents who continuously advocate for clean, safe and environmentally responsible beaches,” said Bornman “Together, we are building a future where tourism and environmental care go hand in hand ” The Green Coast Programme, launched by WESSA to celebrate natural, less-developed coastal areas, has also grown significantly this year, doubling its network to 15 certified sites across South Africa Kouga’s inclusion highlights the region’s balanced approach to conservation and tourism, particularly along its more rugged and nature-rich stretches of coastline

expressed immense pride in the achievement, crediting the dedication of municipal teams and local stakeholders who work tirelessly to maintain Kouga’s coastline

“This recognition is not only a symbol of pristine beaches and high safety standards, but also a testament to Kouga’s unwavering commitment to sustainable coastal management,”

“Our coastlines are the heart of Kouga’s identity,” said Bornman “They drive our tourism economy, bring communities together, and remind us of the responsibility we share to protect these natural treasures for generations to come ”
