Taps dry to allow for leak repairs
Five days to fix it
HELENA BARNARD
Repairing 16 major leaks will be a focus area during the five-day planned water supply interruption awaiting residents of Kimberley.
The interruption commences on Thursday, 29 May, at 18:00 and is scheduled until Tuesday, 3 June, at 18:00.
These repairs are part of the grant of R2,5 billion by the National Treasury allocated to the Sol Plaatje Municipality for the Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI). Previously it was said that this comprehensive BFI programme consists of 35 projects to be implemented in three phases over approximately eight years.
At a briefing on Wednesday, 21 May, executive mayor Martha Bartlett addressed the media on the upcoming interruption.
She said the previous water shutdown addressed, amongst others, 14 of the identified 27 major leaks. The remaining leaks, coupled with new leakages identified, need to be attended to. These affect the water supply to the city.
Some of the identified major leaks are on the 600 diameter line towards Newton, the military base, downstream of Midstream and Newton reservoirs, and near Douglas Road. Installation of pipework and fittings in chambers on the bulk pipelines will
also be done.
Isolation valves need to be replaced, and the new 10MWA electrical transformer at the Riverton Water Treatment Plant (WTP) be connected and tested. The existing reservoirs at the old WTP at Riverton will be cleaned of sludge. Three raw water abstraction pumps will be removed and serviced. A variety of electrical work will also be done.
To execute these tasks, the pipeline needs to be emptied, which will take approximately a day, with the repairs and work planned for three days. After that, it takes time to fill the pipeline.
For nearly the past two weeks the municipality has urged residents and businesses to begin storing water. The municipality also embarked on an effort to inform residents about the planned interruption by dropping pamphlets at businesses, police stations, and key government service delivery points. Information boards have also been mounted on lampposts.
In the meantime, the short unplanned water interruptions in the city are making it difficult to properly prepare for the five-day planned interruption.
On Monday, 26 May, the municipality informed residents that due to an electrical cable fault at the high-lift pumpstation at the Riverton Treatment Plant, pumps at the Newton reservoirs in the city were switched off. This was done to avoid "draining the reservoirs to unrecoverable levels that might necessitate water shedding or an ongoing interruption of supply.”
Although pumping and water supply were expected to be restored during Monday late evening, high-lying areas were still without water late on Tuesday morning.
The previous Friday, parts of the CBD, Kimberley North and De Beers were without water due to a leakage on a 315mm pipe in Phakamile Mabija Road. At the same time, the Beaconsfield area was without water while the municipality attended to a burst pipe in Pulinger Street.
For the duration of the water-interruption, ten roving water tankers wil supply water to each ward. Barlett said ten more trucks will be secured, with 23 flats beds utilised. Water tanks will also be placed in different wards. For enquiries on roaming water tankers, or the location of water-tanks, contact the call centre on 053 830 6111 or the toll-free number 080 122 9010, or send an SMS to 44204.

Fresh start for Mugg & Bean
The newly opened Mugg & Bean in the Diamond Pavilion Mall in Kimberley does not only have new owners but is also occupying a convenient location for visitors to this popular shopping destination.
Dr Alf Bennett and his wife, Rolene, are the owners of this brand-new Mugg & Bean.
“Mugg & Bean is all about customer service and good food, and well-known for its generous portions,” says Bennett.
The couple, both former learners of the Diamantveld High School, are the owners of the same name restaurant in the North Cape Mall, as well as the Milky Lane outlets in the two shopping centres.
“We are keeping with the popular Mugg & Bean norm, and want this restaurant to be a preferred destination for residents and visitors.”
The restaurant can seat 102 customers, who can look forward to the new winter menu.
Mugg & Bean’s menu changes twice a year, resulting in an upgraded summer and winter menu.
“Mugg & Bean observes food trends all over the world, and use this in the planning of the new menu. However, 80 to 85% of the dishes stay the same.”
To maximise customer-experience, the staff –some new in the industry – received training for more than a month.
“Consistent improvement is part and parcel of our offering,” remarks Bennett, who obtained his doctorate degree in Business Management and Marketing Management at the University of the Orange Free State. Previously, he gained experience in the academic field, as well as in the motor and hospitality industry.
Also attending the opening was Chef Mokgadi Itsweng, who has been working in the food industry for more than 20 years.
She learnt cooking skills from both grandmothers and mother, and acquired culinary training in New York City.
Upon her return, a vibrant career followed, including being featured on TV, developing recipes for magazines, working as food editor, being in-
COLLISION CLAIMS LIVES
Four occupants of a Mitsubishi SUV died on Saturday evening during a head-on collision between this vehicle and a truck on the R31 road near Platfontein outside Kimberley.
Lt. Col Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, said the police in Kimberley are investigating a culpable homicide case after this accident on 24 May at approximately 20:40.
Kock said the occupants of the Mitsubishi – a family including the father (35), mother (38) with two children – died while another child was taken to hospital for further medical treatment.
It was noted that the truck driver was traveling alone and escaped from the accident seemingly unscathed.
Anyone with information on this accident can call WO Thabang Kamolane on 082 302 0407 or contact the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or utilise the MySaps App. All information will be treated confidentially.

sorg by die Kuruman-hospitaal geskyn.

is in my kamer uitgestal.

tieke waarde.
Die tema hiervan is “Shaping History, Feeding the Future”.

Ek lag hardop.
Sy kyk my fronsend aan.

5. Noem enkele onlangse prestasies of suksesse?
Fighters deliver stellar execution
The Northern Cape kickboxing team made a powerful statement at the 2025 South African (SA) Kickboxing Championships.
Led by head coach and seasoned martial artist Shihan David Mac Vay, the squad consisted of 18 fighters, of which 17 of them stood on the podium at the event in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, from 26 to 30 April.
The medal tally for the SA Open and national championship is 21 gold medals, 14 silver, and 8 bronze.
“This is a reflection of the team’s skill, discipline, and preparation,” says Mac Vay.
The team walked away with 15 SA Championship titles across various categories, including tatami and ring events.
The Northern Cape also claimed second place place in the SA Open Tournament and secured fourth place overall in the national standings, which is described as an outstanding achievement considering the size of the team.
The fighters displayed exceptional sportsmanship throughout the tournament, serving as role models on and off the mat. Their conduct, passion, and perseverance captured the spirit of true martial artists and left a lasting impression on peers and spectators alike.
The team members who represented the Northern Cape, in categories point fighting (PF), light continuous
(LC), kick light (KL) and musical forms (MF) are:
Ezzray Julius (2nd PF); Tristan Julius (1st PF; 3rd KL, LC and MF); Liya Magadlela (1st PF and KL; 2nd LC and MF); Jannie Strauss (1st MF; 2nd KL, LC and PF); Sithe Magadlela (1st LC, PF); Luan Buys (1st PF; 2nd LC and KL); Aiden Erasmus (1st LC and KL; 2nd PF); Zian van der Merwe; Louise Lotter (1st LC and KL; 3rd PF); Duan Erasmus (3rd KL); Liam Pieterse (2nd LC and KL;3rd PF); Jayden Jacobs (1st KL; 2nd LC); Lourens Jacobs (1st LC and KL); Alicia Kock (1st KL and LC;
2nd PF); Jacques Kühn (1st ring K1); Jeandré Kühn (1st ring low kick – LK); Lylle Pieterse (1st LC and KL; 2nd PF; 2nd Champ of Champs); and David Mac Vay (3rd PF, LC and KL).
The coaching team consisted of Ian Strauss, Natasja Mac Vay, Shone Pieterse, Sivuyesiwe Magadlela, Jacques Kuhn, Lylle Pieterse and David Mac Vay, with Werner Buys and David as referees.
Tristan, Liya, Jannie, Sithe, Luan, Jayden, Lourens, Alicia and Lylle are Tatami SA champions, while Jacques and Jeandré are Ring SA champions.
Deur “Adopt a cop” is die polisie betrokke.
8. Hoe word tegnologie en inno-
vasie gebruik?
11. Watter eienskappe word in personeel waardeer?
Die vermoë om onder druk as ’n span te werk, sowel as veerkragtigheid.

FUNDS RAISED FOR BRIGHTER FUTURE
A gala dinner, serving as a key fundraising initiative for the Lesedi La Afrika Endowment Fund, was recently hosted by the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley.
This event on 16 May was held under the theme “Enabling brighter futures for all”.
The fund is a long-term initiative to sustain SPU’s future, empower its students and staff, and drive academic and institutional growth for generations to come.
In her keynote address, acting vice-chancellor and principal, Prof. Debra Meyer, reflected on the transformative power of education and the shared responsibility to support it.
“At SPU, many of our students arrive with bold dreams, but limited resources. Through funding, they gain access to the quality education they deserve , but we cannot do it alone.
“Your support enables us to change lives, strengthen research and innovation, build human capital, and expand
our footprint.
“Your investment uplifts families, empowers communities and inspires generations. Together, we are enabling brighter futures for all.”
Chair of council, Prof. Randall Carolissen, said since its establishment, the SPU has played a catalytic role in the Northern Cape; from its academic offerings to revitalising the local economy.
A vibrant auction also took place during which guests could bid on a variety of items.
Also, raffle tickets offered guests the chance to win prizes.
“Tonight marks the beginning of a deeper commitment to SPU’s long-term viability and excellence.
“Sustained giving is not only an investment in education – it is an investment in our collective future.
“Partner with us to grow this fund and amplify the impact we can achieve together,” said Kashini Maistry, director of Institutional Advancement.

Adasa encourages dignity, respect
Charné Kemp talked to Emsie Malan, regional manager of the Association for Dementia and Alzheimer’s of South Africa (Adasa) in the Northern Cape (NC). This non-profit company (NPC) was founded as Alzheimer’s South Africa in 1985. It was managed by a national executive council and registered as a non-profit organisation (NPO) on 5 April 2001.
On 10 May 2023, the name was changed to the Association of Dementia and Alzheimer’s of South Africa NPC.
Adasa is the South African representative of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) and is dedicated to improving the quality of life of people living with dementia and those affected by it.
What inspired the creation of this organisation?
It was initiated by volunteers due to the suffering of their loved ones with dementia. Families and carers of people living with dementia needed more information, awareness, training and consultation. Our mission is to provide education, advocacy, and support services to those affected by dementia while raising awareness to reduce stigma and improve care.
How do you identify the communities or causes that need your support the most?
21 September is World Alzheimer’s Day and September is World Alzheimer’s month. During September awareness will focus on the theme determined by ADI. This is to address the stigma of the disease among all communities, resulting in protection and care of the person living with dementia, while erasing the myths about the disease.
Community awareness programmes are priority to educate the community on dementia and to prevent elderly abuse.
All referrals received or request for individual psycho-social support and counselling will be followed up by the social workers.
Can you share details about major ongoing projects or initiatives?
During Purple parkrun in September, participants wear purple for the Run for Dementia at the Rooifontein game farm next to Kimberley.
Adasa NC hosted the third Golden Oldies Championship in October last year at the Acacia Retirement Village. During this event, 20 teams of six members each participated in exercises, sing-alongs, games, and a light lunch, fostering social connections among older persons from various towns. With dementia care training during 2024, two-day training sessions were conducted at multiple locations. More are planned for this year, also at new venues across the province.
A WhatsApp support group is available for those affected by dementia. In-person meetings occur monthly at the Belgrave Lodge and quarterly at the Acacia Retirement Village, offering a safe space to share experiences and gather information.
On Madiba Day last year, on 19 July, Adasa NC dedicated 67 minutes to community service at the Seochoareng Assisted Living Centre, treating 35 residents and seven caregivers with soup, sandwiches, and warm knitted
nale kompetisie gewen.
Africa’s largest and most remote province. This is done with a team comprising a regional manager/social worker, one social worker, and three social auxiliary workers across Kimberley, Upington, and Barkly West.
Social media and Zoom help expand outreach beyond Kimberley, including caregiver training in other towns.

gifts.
Monthly activities for the elderly is held at Belgrave Lodge, which include games, sing-alongs, chair exercises, and fun-filled social engagement.
During awareness talks from April 2024 to March 2025, Adasa NC educated 6 679 people across the province about dementia.
How does your organisation ensure transparency and accountability in managing funds?
Regional managers report to the CEO and meet quarterly with advisory committees, who support finances, marketing, and fundraising. Minutes are kept. The teasurer presents financials; the manager reports on regional services. Quarterly reports with bank and financial statements are submitted to the Department of Social Development (DSD). Two signatures are required for transactions and Absa Business Integrator ensures an audit trail. Annual audits are conducted by an AGM-approved agency. Monthly purchases follow financial policies, made by the manager and treasurer or delegate.
What are some of the challenges faced in achieving goals?
We serve the Northern Cape, South
The organisation seeks volunteer fundraisers or teams to help raise funds. Current initiatives include selling Casual Day stickers and hosting a stall at Yonder Hartsfees.
How do you measure the impact of your work in the communities you serve?
Feedback received from caregivers who attended the dementia training, requests received for training, followers on Facebook and social media, people attending awareness talks, and feedback and recognition received from clients who receives support services from Adasa NC.
What role does collaboration with other organisations or government bodies play?
Adasa, South Africa’s representative of ADI, is committed to improving life for those with dementia. Its services follow global best practices and its training is internationally approved. Collaboration with organisations and government bodies is essential, with DSD funding needed for financial sustainability.
Referrals from elderly service providers help Adasa NC support those living with dementia. Caregiver training in retirement villages and old age homes ensures quality care and prevents elder abuse. Adasa NC also assists families with facility placements and hosts events.
How do you engage donors and encourage long-term support for your mission?
Getting donors is one of the challenges. We do receive donations from churches, and follow it up with a letter of thanks and offering our services to their church members. We forward the annual newsletter to possible donors to inform them about services rendered. We also contact possible donors and inform them about the Section 18A tax benefit being available.
Can you share a success story that highlights the difference your organisation has made?
Adasa's intervention at the Galeshewe Association for the Care of the Aged and Disabled (Gaasca) has positively impacted both staff and older persons, providing valuable insights into Alzheimer’s and caregiving. Workshops have been well received, with hopes for wider accessibility.
From 2024, Emsie Malan conducted a successful three-day Alzheimer’s training for eight staff members, transforming their understanding of dementia. A brief session with the Kokerboom Oord Trust further enriched their knowledge. With an established Alzheimer’s unit and trained personnel, the facility can now offer greater support to the community. Seochwareng Assisted Living Centre extends gratitude to the Adasa team, led by social worker Omphile Magau, for celebrating Nelson Mandela Day with warm soup, bread, and thoughtful gifts.
What plans do you have for a future growth and expansion of your organisation’s initiatives?
To expand service delivery and appoint more personnel. Adasa NC will continue hosting the Golden Oldies Championship. Also, it needs to support the Adasa national office with developing a national dementia plan. Furthermore, Adasa needs to start lobbying with Stats SA to be able to account for the number of people with dementia in South Africa. Visit adasa.org.za for more information.
Essentials help learners succeed
Kathu Solar Park continues its commitment to improving education in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) Municipality through its 2025 Back to School Programme, which launched at the beginning of this month.
This year’s initiative benefits over 1 000 learners and aims to reduce educational inequality by equipping financially disadvantaged learners.
The programme, rolled out in two phases, provides essential school items – including uniforms, backpacks, and scientific calculators to support learning in Mathematics and Science. The introduction of Scientific calculators reflects a focused effort to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (Stem) education and respond to recent curriculum changes.
“The Kathu Solar Park’s Back to School Programme seeks to address several key educational challenges in the JTG Municipality. It aims to reduce educational inequality by providing essential resources to financially disadvantaged students, ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed,” said Sandisiwe Mntonintshi, SED manager at Kathu Solar Park.
“This initiative also alleviates the financial strain on low-income families.
“Furthermore, the programme strives to boost student motivation and engagement, leading to improved attendance and academic results. By investing in education,
the programme hopes to increase graduation rates and create opportunities for socio-economic mobility in the long term.”
During phase 1, which was completed in March, 277 learners across seven schools were supported with uniforms and calculators.
The Sishen Intermediate School was also supported through collaboration between Kathu Solar Park, Sishen Solar Facility and Reisa; 200 learners benefitted from backpacks, full winter and summer uniforms,
school shoes and over 170 calculators for Gr.8 and Gr.9 learners. Phase two will reach an additional 13 schools, including three schools in collaboration with the Sishen Iron Ore Corporation Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT). The programme has shown steady growth. In 2023, 280 learners were supported. In 2024, the number rose to 434. With over 1 000 learners supported in 2025, Kathu Solar Park reaffirms its dedication to fostering brighter futures for young people.

LIENTJIE MENTZ

Skiet barshou in
buiteland
