Champions of empathy

There is less than 48 hours to the start of the much anticipated 23rd annual Mediclinic Vista Road Race on Saturday,23 August. In their attempt to help build excitement among members of the community for the upcoming event, numerous mascots namely the Blood Buddy mascot,Engo Free State’s mascot, Omgie, and the Toktokkie Cansa mascot are raring to go and join runners at the water points along the route The Engo water point will be geared and manned by,from the left,Blood Buddy,Genevieve Heyns (Engo),Omgie,Amelia Nenzhelele (Engo) and Mitzi Heiriss Vosloo (Engo). These mascots and the organisers have banded together to remind the greater Matjhabeng community to care for one another.

The rapidly declining infrastructure in Matjhabeng, daily water shedding and uncontrolled water cut-offs for days on end, lack of streetlights, potholes, and many other service delivery issues were highlighted during a high-powered visit to Welkom this week

Matjhabeng’s infrastructure is on the verge of collapse, which is detrimental to economic growth in the city of Welkom John Steenhuisen, minister of agriculture, visited Welkom on 18 August and spoke to three business leaders concerning the worsening situation Big business in Welkom is adversely affected by the situation and have to fork out millions of rands to stay afloat Steenhuisen met with business leaders at three major employers in

Welkom (Alma Nursery, Fresh Bake, and Sparta Beef) to highlight how urgent reform can turn failing towns into growth engines once again

Alma Nursery has faced illegal land invasions, crippling power cuts, and ten consecutive days without water

Fresh Bake supplies national retailers, but is hobbled by water shedding, billing disputes, excessive rates, and absent refuse and sewage services

Sparta Beef processes 130 tonnes of beef per shift yet has had to spend tens of millions of rands on solar energy, generators, and water storage to stay afloat, while farmers avoid local roads due to their state of decay

Steenhuisen was accompanied by the DA Matjhabeng constituency to address service delivery and poor infrastructure that are directly affecting them

“Poor infrastructure in Matjhabeng

is a result of several interconnected factors, including insufficient funding, poor maintenance, corruption, and inadequate planning and management,” says Coreen Malherbe, DA leader of the Matjhabeng caucus

Another reason mentioned was the Matjhabeng Municipality’s political priorities and focus on new infrastructure projects that overshadow the need for maintenance and upgrades of existing infrastructure

A big issue that was discussed is that the municipality cannot provide sustainable water and electricity, without which no company can function

The consequences of the municipality’s ineffectiveness to provide basic services like water and electricity is far reaching and affects all businesses in the production chain, from supplier to consumer

Steenhuisen said the Matjhabeng situation would be addressed with urgency at provincial level

He said the overall opinion was unequivocal about the fact that the Matjhabeng economy will not recover if the current government remains in power

During his visit he championed the DA’s six-point plan to turbocharge the economy – a blueprint for lowering the cost of living, fixing failing municipalities, securing reliable energy and water, repairing infrastructure, creating jobs, and attracting investment

His visit came as businesses in the Matjhabeng Municipality battle collapse under ANC mismanagement

From water shedding and power cuts to chaotic billing, broken roads, and sewage crises, local employers are forced to divert millions into survival measures

The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, hosted its second Vice-Chancellor’s Business Breakfast in Welkom, following the first in Bloemfontein on 8 August and the third scheduled for Kathu on 29 August

The engagement provided a strategic platform for Prof Pamela Dube, vice-chancellor and principal, to share the CUT’s vision for a future-focused university while facilitating open dialogue with business leaders and key stakeholders

Among the questions raised, was how can the CUT expand access to mining engineering programmes to meet the needs of local communities and the mining sector? Dube shared that the university is actively exploring initiatives under the Programme Qualifications Mix (PQM), in collaboration with partner institutions, to establish a School of Mining in Welkom This aims to support regional development, drive the repurposing of mines, and create opportunities aligned with the CUT’s vision for inno-

Dr Joe Molete, principal of the Welkom campus, also presented the campus ’ s expansion strategy As a result of his presentation, more industry leaders expressed their willingness to collaborate and partner with the CUT, recognising the potential for mutual growth and community advancement

ANC’S POLITICAL INTERFERENCE

The blatant political interference in the R12 000 000 Phomolong Pump Station and Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) project is condemned

Maxie Badenhorst, DA councillor for Matjhabeng Municipality, says the ANC has hijacked a Ward 3 project to benefit Ward 2 The project was awarded to AMK Construction and Moedi Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd

“The municipality’s excuse that the project was ‘mistakenly’ believed to be in Ward 2 is absurd, as the pump station sits at Phomolong’s entrance in the heart of Ward 3 The WWTP is within the Tent next to the Motseki voting district There can be no confusion,” says Badenhorst

This misrepresentation robbed Ward 3 residents of at least 25 jobs, and 25 households lost vital income to put food on the table Whilst unemployment is high across Matjhabeng, it is unacceptable to take opportunities meant for Ward 3 and hand them to Ward 2, which has its own projects

Badenhorst says the ANC Ward 2 councillor appointed local labour from his ward with the full cooperation of the director of infrastructure

Despite a formal inquiry to the acting municipal manager over a month ago, and two promises by

This collective willingness underscores the shared commitment between the business sector and the university to drive innovation, broadening opportunities, and making a tangible difference in the lives of people in the region, fully aligned with the CUT’s mission and vision, and fuelled by the spirit of thinking beyond

STEALS JOBS

the director to arrange meetings nothing materialised, a stalling tactic to ensure the project is completed without Ward 3 benefiting

“This is calculated political manoeuvring before the 2026 local government elections Jobs are being used to score political points and undermine elected ward councillors at residents’ expense,’’ she says Badenhorst has written to the Speaker of Matjhabeng Municipality to address the interference of the Ward 2 councillor in Ward 3, and to address the misconduct of the director of infrastructure for including Ward 2’s councillor whilst excluding Ward 3’s Badenhorst demands the reassignment of all remaining general labour to Ward 3 residents, disciplinary action against the director of infrastructure, and disciplinary action against the Ward 2 councillor ‘‘Sidelining ward councillors and excluding residents from jobs erodes trust in government and fuels unrest With raw sewage running down Phomolong’s streets daily, political meddling is directly increasing instability Residents deserve fair treatment and honest governance, not a ruling party that manipulates projects for political gain "

All the market’s a stage for this talent

The Welkom Drama and Music Club hosted another fun and vibrant showcase aimed at the kids, at this month’s Publicity Association Flea Market held on Women’s Day

A variety of performances celebrated women in various ways, much to the delight of the small but happy audience that gathered in the tea garden

The Women’s Day Show kicked off with a song from the powerful lungs of Em-Jay Mothupi, a local talent A young Zandy Dolophe followed with her moving message to women –reminding the women in attendance of their greatness She was followed by Simah Mqhayi – a singer, radio presenter, motivational speaker, and fashion designer She broke into words of encouragement towards the end of her song

The master of ceremonies duties were shared between several performers, but the most vibrant was Oratilwe Sesing, who also performed one of his unreleased songs

The first children’s story was The Magic Porridge Pot narrated by Dolophe with Thandeka Simbine as Rose, Hlompho Shale as Mommy, Karabo Matsoso as Kind Old Lady and several others as neighbours The second was Three Little Pigs, narrated by Simbine Starting with the hilarious piglets (Dolophe, Shale and

Matsoso) the audience laughed as they ran away from the big bad wolf, played by Kutlwano Thito

Other notable performances included a surprise performance by local budding star Ruth da Vocalist, who shared her latest hit “Ngyamthanda” Bonolo Maikhotso mesmerised the audience with an acrobatic gymnas-

tics routine Kutlwano performed a poem dedicated to all the fallen women at the hands of men Matsoso had the audience laughing with her poem taking a jab at the absurdity of online dating and how disconnected it can be from reality Mqhayi performed a captivating poem in Xhosa, wearing one of her self-made traditional garments She connected with the older women as she paid tribute to their resilience, beauty and wisdom To end the show, director T-Bone Hlahane thanked the audience and made a plea for donations, as drama classes are free and the club relies on donations only The drama club’s performances are always from 11:00 on flea market days, and conclude by 12:00 “The market performances were inspired by a need to bring more people to the tea garden, while also giving drama lovers an opportunity to perform for a live audience – something that has become scarce since the closure of the Oppenheimer Theatre The performances appeal mostly to the kids so the whole family can watch,” says Hlahane The drama club rehearses every Tuesday at the Rovers Squash Club, from 11:30 to16:30

Hlompho Shale,an artist, acted in some of the productions, did face painting, and had sweets for the children She is a poet, actress and vocalist, and displayed all her talents in one morning

“Classes are basically free; members are encouraged to make a small donation if they can Donations from the public are welcome,” says Hlahane
