The opening stage of the 2025 FNB Wines2Whales series, on Friday 31 October, saw exciting racing, with the drama increased by the pre-race favourites missing a route marker and having to chase for 25 kilometres to regain their advantage.
From the start at Benguela Cove, the Switchback route takes teams through the Overberg and up onto the Elgin pla-
teau, where the Oak Valley race village beckoned. Candice Lill and Tyler Jacobs got their directions wrong and ended up racing towards Villiersdorp instead, only realising their mistake once they had spent nearly five minutes riding off course. The 2025 FNB Wines2Whales will end on 9 November and the organisers urge spectators to support the riders in this event. As thousands of holidaymakers prepare to flock to the Overberg’s beaches wildlife authorities are issuing a critical safety warning that could save lives. With Cape fur seals becoming increasingly active along our shores during the warmer months, the public needs to be aware of serious health risks – including a growing concern about rabies transmission from these seemingly playful marine mammals.

“It should be noted that activities that disturb seals in general are illegal without a permit, according to the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Nemba) Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) regulations. These activities include petting, as it disturbs the animal’s natural behaviour and exposes humans to potential dangers such as bites, scratches, infections and disease. Even in instances where a seal pup is found on a beach, people should avoid interacting with the animal. The public should contact the authorities who are trained and equipped to rescue and care for such animals,” said Dr Ashley Naidoo, CEO of CapeNature. “While it is common for seals to haul out on beaches to rest, it is important to recognise any signs of distress or abnormal behaviour when encountering a seal. Seals may display defensive behaviour if they feel threatened or are injured. They may display aggressive or disoriented behaviour if infected by rabies. Rabies can be transmitted through bites, scratches or direct contact with saliva and is fatal for both humans and unvaccinated animals.”
The public is urged to stay away

from seals and not to touch or engage with them. Swimmers and surfers must be extra vigilant while in the sea. If a seal is spotted, exit the water immediately and if you suspect it may have rabies, report it to the lifeguards or municipal authorities.
“As we approach the busy summer season, I remind everyone that Cape fur seals are wild animals. Even well-intentioned interactions can have serious consequences for both people and the animals,” said Naidoo. “We urge the public to act responsibly, avoid contact, and immediately report any abnormal or aggressive seal behaviour to the authorities.”
In case of a seal bite/ scratch/ lick:
• If a seal bites/ scratches someone in the water, the beach will be closed immediately, marked by the activation of a shark siren and the raising of a shark flag, if available.
• Shark spotters or lifeguards will promptly notify CapeNature and the State Veterinarian, who will provide guidance on the necessary action. Municipal Disaster Management and appropriate Marine Stranding Networks will also be informed.
• Lifeguards or first responders will monitor and track the seal’s movements.
• The beach will only reopen after the seal has been safely removed or has vacated the area.
• Anyone bitten, scratched or licked by a suspect rabid seal should seek urgent medical care at the nearest hospital. At the scene, the wound must be thoroughly washed with soap and water for 10-15 minutes. The person must then be taken to the nearest hospital to receive post-exposure prophylactic treatment against rabies. The patient needs to inform the hospital personnel that the bite/ scratch/ lick is from a seal that may be rabid.
• A video of the seal’s behaviour should be captured if possible and sent to CapeNature at 083 236 2924, including a location pin. This will be placed on the appropriate stranding network for advice and planned reaction. If your pet has been bitten or scratched by a seal, consult the local state veterinarian. Provide details of the incident, including wound type, treatment received, and vaccination history. Follow the same wound-cleaning protocol for pets as for humans. Ensure your pets are vaccinated against rabies as this is the only means to protect them against this deadly disease. It is a legal requirement for all dogs and cats in South Africa to be vaccinated against rabies.

The devastating fire in the Gansbaai area destroyed more than 1800 hectares.
Earlier this week Overstrand firefighters and ground teams took advantage of the cooler weather to continue mop-up operations across all divisions, focusing on extinguishing all remaining hotspots within and near the fire perimeter.
“The Overstrand Municipality Fire Service, together with Traffic, law enforcement and other firefighting crew, once again showed great commitment in confining the fires,” the municipal manager, Dean O’Neill, said.
According to a press release from the OM two NCC teams have contained the fireline in the mountain and will conclude mop-up operations from Monday while three WoF teams are operating along the gravel road on the Platbos/Grootbos side.
“The Kleinmond Team is working from De Uilenes towards the Grootbos side, the Hottentots Holland and Elgin Valley Teams are covering the area
from Grootbos back towards De Uilenes and two fire resources are focusing on the area between Groeneweide and Sopieshoogte,” O’Neill said.
Mayor Archie Klaas said firefighting is a tough business, and he thanked all firefighters and role players for their hard work and dedication on the fire lines. “The generous donations and support from residents and the wider community are deeply appreciated,” Klaas said.
Over the weekend a fire was also burning in the mountains behind Greyton and Genadendal.
“Our local Fire and Disaster Management teams, together with the Greater Overberg Fire Protection Association and the Overberg District Municipality (ODM), monitored the situation,” the Theewaterskloof Municipality (TWK) said in a press release.
They also confirmed that the fire which started in the mountains behind Greyton and Genadendal was brought under control. “At this stage there is
no risk to life, property or the environment. Overberg District Municipality (ODM) Fire is on scene with one skid unit patrolling the burnt area and monitoring for flare ups along the mountainous areas.”
CapeNature is calling on the public to stay alert and proactive as the wildfire season nears, reminding all that the cost of runaway fires is far greater than many realise. Each year, wildfires threaten lives, destroy homes and infrastructure, and cause lasting damage to the Western Cape’s biodiversity. From displaced families and lost livelihoods to injured wildlife and devastated habitats, the impact is felt across communities, ecosystems, and the economy. During the 2024’25 fire season, CapeNature’s cost for fire suppression alone exceeded R20 million. Damage to the organisation’s infrastructure was also severe, while private landowners also sustained damage. Legal claims for damages to forests and infrastructure exceeded R300 million.
It is a case that is attracting a lot of interest. In June this year a well-known IT specialist from Hermanus was arrested in Hermanus for child pornography and on 18 September 2025 Hermanus Times reported on this case (“Case against Hermanus resident who was arrested for child pornpostponed again”, Hermanus Times 18 September 2025). On 12 September the 41-year-old brought anapplication before the court to request that he no longer remain under house arrest as set out in his bail conditions.
As part of the application requesting that the bail conditions be amended the accused’s lawyer read an affidavit out in which he stated that as the owner of a laser-engraving business and an IT-services provider being under house arrest was difficult, as he often had to meet with clients, source materials and deliver his products. It was also stated the coming months were “peak season” for generating income and that his livelihood depended on it.
The state indicated that after speaking to the investigating officer, who confirmed the investigation had been final-

Thieves are employing increasingly elaborate methods to steal municipal infrastructure, burying evidence under sand and debris while communities bear the costly consequences.
Cable theft has reached crisis levels across South Africa, with the economic impact now estimated to exceed R187 billion annually, according to recent assessments and municipalities in the Overberg are experiencing firsthand the devastating effects of this national epidemic, with recent incidents revealing the sophisticated methods employed by criminal networks targeting essential infrastructure.
In a recent incident in Meerenbosch near Hermanus perpetrators demonstrated the calculated nature of modern cable theft operations. The criminals excavated several metres of trenches through knee-deep sand to access and strip electrical cables before meticulously concealing their activities. “They covered the holes with broken roof sheets and small branches to hide their work and make it harder to detect,” the Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’ Neill said.
He said similar sophisticated operations had escalated in Blompark and Masakhane in Gansbaai, where streetlight cables and consumer connection cables have become primary targets. “In these areas, criminals are also systematically covering all trenching work after removing cables, making detection significantly more challenging for authorities.”
The deliberate vandalism extends far beyond simple theft, creating serious safety
hazards and imposing substantial financial burdens on local government. Municipal staff are forced to dedicate extensive hours to repair damaged infrastructure, while essential services face regular disruptions.
“The deliberate vandalism of municipal infrastructure is both dangerous and costly,” O’Neill said. “It not only disrupts essential services and places a heavy burden on municipal staff, but also threatens the safety of the community. Municipal authorities emphasise that addressing the crisis requires active community participation, as residents are both the primary victims of infrastructure damage and the most likely witnesses to suspicious activities.
“The municipality cannot tackle this alone and relies on the community to help protect municipal infrastructure in their own neighbourhoods, as they are the ones most affected by the damage,” officials noted. “In most cases, the community are aware of who the culprits are.” Residents are encouraged to report suspicious digging or unusual activities immediately through several available channels:
• Emergency Line: Law Enforcement at 028 313 8996 (24/7 service)
• Regional Electrical Services:Gansbaai and Stanford: 028 384 8376Hermanus and Kleinmond: 028 316 5600
• Digital Platform: Collab Citizen App using the dedicated Theft/Vandalism reporting icon
• Anonymous Reporting: Through Ward Councillors for residents concerned about safety
ised, it would not oppose the application to have the bail conditions amended.
The case was postponed for the Director of Public Prosecution’s instructions on what platform (regional or high court) the case will be heard. According to Eric Ntabazalila, National Prosecuting Authority Regional Communications Manager of the Western Cape, the case is on the roll on 23 June 2026 for a regional court date.
The accused was arrested in June by members of the Western Cape serial and electronic crime investigation unit (SECI) for the possession and distribution of child sexual-abuse material (child pornography).
Lt Col Amanda van Wyk, national police spokesperson, reported in June the arrest had been made following a tipoff from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the USA.
“Investigation by the Western Cape SECI team led to tracing and locating the suspect in Hermanus,” she said. “Various digital devices found in his possession were seized during the arrest.”
As technology continues to shape how we live and work, South Africa’s Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (ECTA) has become essential in regulating online communication and e-commerce.
ECTA provides the legal foundation for digital transactions, ensuring that documents, contracts, and communications conducted electronically have the same force as those on paper. With only a few exceptions - such as wills and documents for the sale of immovable property - most agreements can now be signed and stored electronically.
Under Section 11(1), an electronic record or “data message” is not without legal effect simply because it exists in digital form. This means a PDF contract stored on your computer carries the same legal weight as a printed one in a filing cabinet.
Equally important is Section 13, which recognises electronic signatures as valid and binding. Whether a document is signed using a digital platform, by typing your name, or by using a stylus or “draw” function, it can constitute a valid signature - provided

it identifies the person and indicates their acceptance of the document’s contents. In today’s digital environment, understanding these provisions is crucial. ECTA empowers individuals and businesses to transact confidently online, knowing their electronic agreements and signatures are legally protected. However, it also serves as a reminder to treat electronic signing with the same caution and responsibility as traditional pen-on-paper contracts.

gedoen is.

Talle pryse is gewen.

The Greyton Rose and Garden Fair, which started out as the Greyton Rose Fair more than 30 years ago, once again had visitors flocking to the picturesque village of Greyton during the weekend of 24 – 26 October.
The village was a hive of activity, with visitors and locals enjoying all the activities presented. On Saturday morning a local school choir performed on the church steps opposite the market. This was followed by a flash mob dance event by a large group of kids from various schools. A parade of vintage cars also drew a lot of attention from young and old alike and the popular Saturday market was a buzz of activity.
The popular rose show, which was reintroduced last year, was a joy for any rose lover with magnificent specimens on display. This year the number of roses entered were double that of last year.
Visitors could enjoy the 12 open gardens, which varied from for-
mal rose gardens, to cottage gardens and an indigenous garden. About 500 visitors visited these gardens over the three-day period. There was a distinct festive air with visitors and locals strolling through the streets to look at the different gardens.
Well-known actor Anrich Herbst and Xtine Stepcic were spotted enjoying Dr Mike Kock’s indigenous garden. Herbst told Hermanus Times that they visited Greyton a few weeks ago and when they spotted the posters for the Rose and Garden Fair, they simply had to come back to enjoy all the activities the Fair offered. “We have fallen totally in love with Greyton,” Herbst said. Ria Wills, organiser of the Rose and Garden Fair, said they were delighted with the success of this years fair. “Everything just came together to make the Rose Show and Open Gardens such a fabulous success and we have received nothing but compliments.”
Proceeds of the event go to Early Childhood Development for education of valley children.

A groundbreaking initiative to transform educational opportunities for young people in Botrivier took centre stage at the Botrivier Hotel on Thursday 30 October as community leaders unveiled plans to establish a comprehensive school of skills by 2027.
The ambitious project, spearheaded by a dedicated team of retired and active professionals from Botrivier and surrounding farms, aims to bridge the critical gap between education and employment for village youth through a four-year hands-on training programme. At a breakfast brunch attended by business leaders, organisations and Theewaterskloof Deputy Mayor Cynthia Clayton the non-profit organisation Overberg Our Community Our Future (OOCOF) presented its vision for an independent school that will offer practical trades and services training, life-skills development, mentorship and career guidance. The initiative would address a pressing need in the community, providing local youth with direct pathways to employment and further-education opportunities without having to leave their home village.
Generous land donation
The project received a significant boost, with OOCOF member Jayne Beaumont of Beaumont Wines generously donating 5 ha of land for the school’s development. This substantial contribution demonstrates the level of community commitment behind the initiative.
The school’s construction will unfold in three carefully planned phases: Phase 1 will focus on essential groundwork, including an environmental-impact study, land rezoning and site clearing.
Initial infrastructure will include four classrooms, theory rooms and workshops, a fully-equipped kitchen, an agriculture shed, administration offices, and ablution facilities and phases 2 and 3 will expand the facility, with the addition of a multi-purpose hall, more classrooms and workshops, a sports field and retail shop, a comprehensive educational campus.
“The response from the Overberg business sector has been overwhelmingly positive,” said one organiser and central team player Rachel Browne, “with those present recognising themselves as primary stakeholders and beneficiaries of this transformative development. The enthusiasm and excitement demonstrated by guests signalled strong potential for ongoing business community support. There was a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation.” She and fellow organiser Manie Carelse emphasised that business-sector buy-in was crucial to the project’s success.

Local businesses stand to benefit significantly from a skilled workforce trained specifically for the regional job market. Many have expressed a need for a school of skills, one that represents more than just an educational facility; it’s a strategic investment in Botrivier’s economic future.
By training young people in practical trades and services, while providing comprehensive life skills education, the initiative promises to create a pipeline of qualified workers ready to meet local employment demands. “The four-year programme structure will allow for thorough skill development,” Browne said, “ensuring people are well-prepared for the workforce or further education.”
The project exemplifies the power of community collaboration, bringing retirees with decades of professional experience, active local business leaders and forward-thinking organisations together, united by a shared vision of youth development. Agter is David Flint, Elna
Mitzi Buys
’n Matriekafskeid is seker dié geleentheid waarna alle leerders hul hele skoolloopbaan uitsien.

The Hermanus Music Society will bring its 2025 concert series to a close with an enchanting evening of violin and harp music featuring international duo Shigatsu, performing at the Gereformeerde Church in Sandbaai on 21 November.
The final concert of the society’s traditional seven-event calendar has been scheduled a week earlier than usual to accommodate the busy end-of-year period, following the absence of an October performance. Performers Gilah Kellner (violin) and Ricardo Hiniker (harp) have chosen the name Duo Shigatsu in tribute to their shared passion for the acclaimed anime series Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa kimi no uso). The series tells the story of virtuosic violinist Kaori and brilliant post-trauma pianist Kousei, themes that resonate deeply with the musical duo.
The evening’s programme will reflect this Japanese influence, featuring two compositions by Joseph Molnar, founder and president of the Nippon Harp Society. The concert begins at 17:45 with registration and wine, followed by canapés before the 18:30 performance. The musical programme will be complement-

Nine spectacular gardens within 10 km radius open their gates to raise funds for education while offering plant sales, fynbos talks, and gourmet refreshments.
The beloved Elgin Open Gardens event returns for its 27th consecutive year and on 8 and 9 November garden enthusiasts will have the opportunity to explore nine distinctive properties nestled within a compact radius in the scenic Elgin Valley.
The popular weekend showcase will run on Saturdays and Sundays, with gardens officially opening at 09:30. However, early risers can gain access to Wildekrans Country House from 08:00, providing extra time to explore one of the event’s flagship locations. Beyond the visual feast of established gardens, visitors will find numerous opportunities to enhance their own green spaces. Plant sales will be available at Keurbos, Auldearn, and Fresh Woods, while Wildekrans Country House will offer their coveted Gunnera plants – a particular favourite among collectors.
Garden education takes center stage at Wildekrans Country House, where “Fynbos Talks and Plant ID” interactive sessions will be led by Green Mountain Trail guide Andreas Groenewald. These specialised presentations require advance booking through info@greenmountain.co.za. The organisers have prioritised accessibility, with immediate neighbor Houw Hoek Outspan offering full wheelchair access. All other gardens except Stone Kitchen provide partial wheelchair accessibility, and visitors requiring special parking arrangements are encouraged to phone ahead for drop-off services. venues is straightforward, with two of the nine gardens – Houw Hoek Outspan and Wildekrans Country House – accessible via the same N2 turnoff used for the Houw Hoek Hotel. Wildekrans Country House stands out for its impressive collection of established trees, featuring varieties from Swamp Cypress to Melaleuca. Garden tours highlight the property’s productive trees including Pecan, Chestnut, Almond, Fig, Olive, Pear, and Old Cape lemon varieties, alongside promising young yellowwood specimens. The venue enhances the garden experience with refreshment options, allowing visitors to wander the grounds while enjoying bubbly drinks and homemade basil pesto cheese and ham paninis.
Organisers emphasise that Wildekrans Country House should not be confused with Wildekrans Wine Estate. The country house sits at the base of the Houw Hoek Mountains’ wild cliffs, while the wine estate – established by the current host family’s father years ago – is no longer under family ownership. The garden showcase represents more than horticultural appreciation, serving as a vital fundraising mechanism for the Botrivier Education Foundation. Current organisers continue the tradition established by earlier family efforts, driven by what they describe as “sheer joy” in sharing their gardens while supporting educational initiatives in the local community.

As jy ’n liedjie, ’n song of woorde het – skryf in.

Jóú tyd is nou’.”

The Moffat Hall in Mount Pleasant was filled with pride and celebration on Saturday 25 October, as MP City FC Junior held its annual awards ceremony, recognizing the outstanding achievements of their young players during the 2024-'25 JFFC season.
The evening proved to be a resounding success, with players, families, and supporters gathering to celebrate a remarkable year of football excellence that saw the club achieve impressive tournament results.
The ceremony highlighted the club’s exceptional performance in the JFFC tournament, where their u-14 team claimed the coveted first place position, while the u-16 squad secured a commendable third-place finish. These achievements had already been recognised earlier this year, the teams receiving rewards on 16 August 2025 for their excellent performance.
In keeping with the club’s philosophy of celebrating participation and development every player received a medal and certificate acknowledging their excellent participation throughout the season. This inclusive approach ensures all young footballers feel valued for their commitment and effort. Several players received special recognition for their outstanding contributions: Most Improved Player Awards: u-10 – Nushaan; u-12 –Caleb and Bryce (joint recipients); u-14 –

Eli UysPlayer of the Season Awards; u-14 – Peter Montaque; u-16 – Thabo Paulse. These individual accolades highlight the club’s focus on both improvement and excellence, recognising players who have shown exceptional growth as well as those who consistently performed at
the highest level. The successful evening was made possible through contributions from many supporters throughout the year. The club expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped make the ceremony a memorable occasion. “It was indeed a successful evening, enjoyed by

all present,” noted club organisers. As the club looked ahead to future seasons it was actively seeking support from the broader community to continue providing opportunities for young footballers.
MP City FC Junior appeals to institutions, businesses and individuals for donations or sponsorship to help meet the children’s needs for practising soccer in a healthy and disciplined manner.
The club’s commitment to developing young talent while instilling values of discipline and healthy living makes them an ideal partner for community-minded sponsors looking to invest in youth development. MP City FC Junior’s success story demonstrates the positive impact that well-organised youth football can have on a community. By providing structured opportunities for young people to develop their skills, stay active and learn valuable life lessons through sport the club contributes significantly to the holistic development of Mount Pleasant’s youth.

’n Mens kon sien waarom dié span in 25 wedstryde onoorwonne was.

Overberg is.
