The day began with a visit to SANRAL’s Technical Excellence Academy and Freeway Management System (FMS) Facility. The FMS is a groundbreaking project and the first of its kind in the province.
It enables SANRAL to monitor road conditions in real time, respond promptly to incidents, and provide live updates to motorists, enhancing road safety.
“Zone 1 will be fully operational by June or July this year, and all incident management data will be fed directly to the Traffic Management Centre for immediate action,” explained one of SANRAL’s engineers.
The delegation continued their site visit to the R335 national road between Motherwell and Addo, an area benefiting from SANRAL’s current construction projects, which include road infrastructure improvements that consider the needs of the surrounding agricultural communities.
Reflecting on SANRAL’s work in the province, Creecy highlighted the dual economic and community value of these developments.
“The investment being made into the Eastern Cape is significant,” she said. “Not only are we helping to boost the economy, with the N2 being essential for road freight between Cape Town and Durban, but we are also focusing on addressing community challenges.”
THE dream of owning a home finally came true for 62-year-old Nonkosi Koom and 23 other beneficiaries in Red Location, Gqeberha, recently.
After more than three decades of living in shacks without the right to their own land or property, these residents were overjoyed to receive keys to brand-new homes.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, officially handed over the houses during an uplifting ceremony. The 24 houses marked a remarkable milestone in the Red Location Project, which seeks to address the historical housing imbalances in the area. A total of 171 houses will eventually be built as part of this initiative, which also forms part of the broader development of the iconic Red Location Museum precinct.
“This is a confirmation that the current government keeps its promises,” Lobishe said during the handover event. “We were here four years ago to brief you about this project, and we have walked this long journey with you all the way. Today, we begin delivering with 24 houses, and many more will follow under the R14 million budget allocation.”
According to the municipal spokesperson, Sithembiso Siyaya, the project, originally set to be completed by September 2024, faced de-
lays due to collaborative consultations about house designs and sizes, as well as challenges in obtaining subsidies for joint applications.
"However, the municipality remains committed to fulfilling its goals," he said.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Lobishe urged them to take pride in and care for their new homes: “Now that we have kept our part of the deal, please take care of these houses as they will now be your responsibility.”
For Koom, the handover was a life-changing moment. Having lived in shacks and moved multiple times due to unsafe living conditions, she now has a place to call her own. “I will now own a property and have a title deed for the first time in my life,” an excited Koom said. “I kept the faith that one day I would get a house, and now that day has come.”
Despite the joy and progress, challenges remain for the municipality. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements, Councillor Thembinkosi Mafana, acknowledged ongoing efforts to secure additional funding from the Provincial and National government to complete the project. “We will continue to deliver houses in a manner that reflects both a heart and a human face,” said Mafana. “In every project we undertake, we aim to prioritise the vulnerable, including the elderly, physically challenged, child-headed households, and other at-risk groups," he concluded.
She added, “SANRAL’s projects here show care for both people and animals,
ensuring safe crossings for cattle, goats, and other livestock that are a staple of this agricultural region.”
Creecy further emphasised the broader benefits of SANRAL’s efforts. “We’re not just building roads; we’re creating opportunities.
These projects are generating jobs, supporting the growth of micro-enterprises, and training the next generation of engineers. It’s about building the future of South Africa,” she said.
The site visit also showcased innovative measures to combat vandalism and theft.
SANRAL engineers are working closely with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to enhance security by deploying armed personnel and utilising camera systems for early detection of threats.
“We are looking at leveraging these technologies to protect critical infrastructure and ensure its continued functionality,” the engineers stated.
Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe expressed gratitude for SANRAL’s intervention and pledged the municipality’s cooperation.
“We truly appreciate this initiative and are committed to supporting the system for the benefit of our residents.”
The R335 project is part of SANRAL’s extensive work in the region, which also includes construction along the N2 national road between St Albans and Linton Grange.
These projects form a larger strategy to improve connectivity, road safety, and economic activity in the province.
With the FMS project nearing operational status and continued investments in infrastructure, Creecy outlined her optimism for the area’s future.
"This is about long-term impact — safer roads, stronger communities, and a thriving economy."

MANDELA University’s April Graduation ceremonies celebrated not only academic achievements but also the incredible resilience, determination, and courage of its graduates.
Among the inspiring stories were those of a father-daughter duo, a single mother overcoming great odds, and a young woman who pushed through unthinkable challenges to set an example for her community.
Francois du Plessis, a Video Production Technician in the Media and Communication Department, graduated with a BA Honours in Media Studies.
For Francois, an alumnus of Mandela University in photography, his journey spans almost three decades at the institution. As part of his honours coursework, he produced the collaborative film, Soul Release , which has been selected for the prestigious SIEF (International Society for Ethnology and Folklore) conference in Aberdeen, Scotland. Reflecting on his time at Mandela University, Francois said, “Mandela University has been a sig -
nificant part of my life. The support and camaraderie I’ve experienced here, from colleagues to staff across campuses, have been invaluable. Everyone I’ve met and worked with since 1996 holds a special place in my heart.”
His pride doubled as he graduated alongside his daughter, Tia du Plessis, who earned her Certificate in IT End User Support. Continuing her studies towards getting a Diploma in Support Services, Tia is also gaining hands-on experience as a part-time lab assistant in the Media and Communication Department. “Having Tia graduate alongside me is a moment I will cherish forever,” Francois shared. “It shows that education is not just about personal growth but about sharing that journey as a family.”
Equally inspiring was the story of Nadia Kassim, a single mother of five boys, who received her MBA during the graduation ceremonies. At 39 years old, Kassim embarked on a journey of education to better provide for her family. Along the way, she faced unemployment, commuting struggles, and personal tragedies, including the murder of her eldest son, Muneeb Kas -
sim, in 2021, and the loss of two nephews and a close family friend in a car accident just months later. “Despite everything, I knew I had to grow and improve myself, not only to be a better mother but also to be the role model my sons deserved,” said Kassim.
Through resilience and support from her community, Kassim earned multiple qualifications, ultimately completing her MBA. “You’ll never have all the answers before you start, but you’ll figure it out along the way. You’ll find a way to make it work,” she said, encouraging others. At 54, Kassim is not done yet - she has set her sights on Islamic Studies and possibly a PhD.
Another story of triumph is that of 24-year-old Caitlyn De Beer from Bethelsdorp. De Beer graduated with an Advanced Diploma in TVET despite being a full-time worker, a new mother, and a full-time student in 2024. After discovering her pregnancy just months before enrolling, she faced feelings of shame and uncertainty but was determined to persevere.
“I remember standing outside the reg -
istration venue, noticing I was the only pregnant girl. I felt ashamed, but I pushed through,” the young mother shared. Throughout her studies, she balanced her responsibilities as a mother to her daughter, Nevaeh Nova, while resigning from work to complete her teaching practical.
“I can still remember the nights we both sat up, me finishing my essays while she was alongside me,” she said.
“I want to motivate others who feel discouraged. Seeing a local girl achieve her dreams can inspire others to do the same,” she added.
Her message for young mothers struck a chord: “Motherhood isn’t easy, but you’ll find your way. Flaunt that pregnant body – it’s a blessing to carry a child. God wouldn’t put something on your path you can’t handle.”
From father-daughter milestones to courageous single mothers and trailblazing young women, the stories shared during this graduation season inspire others to dream big, work hard, and never give up.
“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great,” Nadia Kassim aptly summed up the spirit of this graduating class.
THE Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, recently visited Kuyga Community Hall as part of a collaborative outreach initiative to deliver critical services directly to the community.
Partnering with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, SASSA, the Departments of Social Development, and Home Affairs, the event aimed to bridge the gap between government services and the residents of Kuyga.
Community members were encouraged to bring their CVs, ID books, and passports to access a range of services, including support for UIF claims, assistance with workplace injuries, labour-related complaints, and registration on the job seeker database.
SASSA officials were on hand to assist with social grant applications, while Home Affairs provided collection services for ID documents.
During her visit, Meth toured the service stalls to monitor progress and praised the collaborative effort that made the outreach possible. Officials reported that 302 residents successfully registered on the job-seeker database during the event, a significant step toward connecting community members with employment opportunities.
Addressing attendees, the minister highlighted the importance of taking services to communities far removed from government offices. “We are bringing services to you by working together with various departments. This will not be the last time we come hereyou have the right to access these services,” she said.
The Minister also took time to engage directly with residents, offering words of encouragement. “While challenges remain, I urge you to remain hopeful and prayerful as you continue to seek employment opportunities,” she said, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving access and support for communities in need.

REPRESENTING the u/18 Eastern Province team at the Bowls South Africa National Championships in Bloemfontein recently, 15-year-old Nicah Boshoff achieved a major milestone by helping his team secure a bronze medal.
This incredible achievement comes just two years after Boshoff took up the sport as a hobby shared with his father, Michael Boshoff.
“It’s been an incredible experience,” Nicah told the PE Express last year. “Lawn bowls is so much more competitive and strategic than many people imagine – it’s like chess, snooker, and maths all rolled into one. I love the strategising, the gameplay, and the social side of it all.”
Lawn bowls has quickly become a core part of Nicah’s life, offering a source of joy and focus as he manages a long-term medical condition, chronic encopresis. “Bowls allows me to focus on something I enjoy and excel at,” he added.
Nicah's father, Michael, who serves as both his coach and biggest supporter, expressed his pride in his son’s achievement.
“All the hard work – hours of practising and sacrifices – has been worth it,” Michael said. “Despite the challenges Nicah has faced, watching him help his team win a medal is a moment I’ll never forget.”
The PE Express previously reported that due to a long-term illness, Nicah has been homeschooled since 2019.
He suffers from chronic encopresis due to the fact that his colon did not develop properly.
He has been hospitalised five times in the last three years, because of this. In bowls he has found a sport that he enjoys, and in which he excels, and it takes his mind off his condition.
This allows Michael to work his son’s practice schedule out accordingly.
Last year, his mother, Juanita, shared her overwhelming joy.
“When I found out he’d made the u/18 squad, I cried with happiness. Every hour of effort he’s put in has paid off.”
The family also credited the Mill Park Bowling Club for their support in Nicah’s journey.
“It really does take a village to raise a great bowler, and our club has been incredible,” concluded Michael.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is looking to expand the starter service of Libhongolethu during the 2024/2025 municipal financial year to the Kariega contract area The expansion will be implemented in terms of Section 41 of the National Land Transport Act (Act 5 of 2009) (NLTA). This phase comprises two main routes that originate in Rosedale via the Kariega CBD terminals to KwaNobuhle. It is the responsibility of the NMBM to acquire and provide a method of collecting and controlling fares charged to passengers.
A fare is defined as the amount or charge received in exchange for the transport services provided. The Fare Policy determines the business rules as they apply to the fares and typically deals with increases, concessions or discounts, effects of changes in underlying operational costs, and related matters. It is planned for this fare collection to ultimately be undertaken by means of an automated fare collection (AFC) system; however, while the process of procuring the AFC is underway, a paper ticketing system will be utilised.
It is a requirement that the Draft Fare Policy be made available for public comment and that adequate opportunity be provided for all stakeholders to make representations or objections. Such representations and objections shall be reviewed by the authority and, if necessary the draft shall be revised prior to submission to Council for approval.
The Draft NMBM Fare Policy will be available for inspection and comment by the general public, interested and affected parties at the Public Libraries and Customer Care Centres in the NMBM It will also be published in the document library on the municipal website: www nelsonmandelabay gov za/documentlibrary
All comments, representations, and objections are to be submitted in writing to the Senior Director: Transport Planning, Roads and Stormwater at zzinto@mandelametro gov za ssomjaliso@mandelametro gov za and kmitchell@mandelametro gov za by FRIDAY, 23 MAY 2025

THREE top Gqeberha rugby teams are preparing intensely for very tough matches on Saturday.
Grey High is off to Qonce to face Dale College and Framesby hits the road to the farm in Riversdale to play against Oakdale.
Outeniqua makes the trip from George to join Pearson at home in Gqeberha for Reunion Weekend.
Pearson is working hard to make sure they can compete at a high level against top-flight rugby schools.
Coach Christiaan van Schalkwyk is doing a great job with a young Pearson side.
Pearson had a fantastic start to the season
with six victories in a row, before going down to Selborne College in East London two Saturdays ago.
Selborne won 40-13 and Pearson learned some valuable lessons in defeat.
It was also not easy at the KES Easter Festival in Johannesburg, where Northwood beat Pearson 61-26.
The huge Northwood boys used their driving mauls to good effect, but Pearson again showed they are willing to learn and improve.
Siya Ncwasi will still be happy in defeat as he scored three tries for Pearson in this match.
Denilo Jordaan also scored a gem.
It is another tough assignment against Outeniqua, but the home side will give it their everything on this special weekend for Pearson.
The action starts on Friday when the first

THE u/14 Warriors Eastern Province Indoor Cricket team shone brightly at the Interprovincial Junior Tournament held in Cape Town recently, delivering an outstanding performance that culminated in a gold medal victory.
Competing in 12 round-robin games against various provinces, the u/14 Warriors emerged unbeaten, showcasing their dominance and skill throughout the tournament. In a thrilling final match, they faced off against the Gauteng North Titans and secured a well-deserved victory to claim the championship title.
In addition to their success on the field, the team also earned the Fair Play Award for the u/14 category, showcasing their exemplary sportsmanship and conduct during the competition.
The celebration didn’t end there, as five talented players from the Eastern Province side – Noah Jacobs, Kayden Whittaker, Keanu Woods, Nathan van der Merwe, and Ruan Sampson – received further recognition by being selected for the u/14 South Africa team. These exceptional players will have the opportunity to compete in the World Cup trials later this year.

girls’ hockey sides clash at 18:00, followed by the boys at 19:15.
On Saturday, the netball first teams will do battle from 10:00, and the kickoff for the highlight of the weekend, the first team rugby fixture, is at 14:00.
Grey were never in the game against a strong Paul Roos Gymnasium outfit in Stellenbosch two Saturdays ago. They will be ready to hit back with a victory over Dale.
The highlight against Paul Roos was the try scored from an effective rolling maul, which followed a lineout.
Grey will be keen to use this weapon against Dale when they get an opportunity.
Dale, like Framesby, played three matches at the Kearsney Festival in Durban. It should be interesting to see how these teams respond af-
ter a busy time at the Festival. Westville was way too strong for Framesby, winning 31-0 last Thursday, but the Gqeberha outfit hit back two days later by beating Peterhouse (Zimbabwe) 45-19.
Oakdale is a classy outfit, but it is an opportunity for Framesby to show what they can do against a quality side.

PEEFA club’s Easter Tournament keeps the community together
The Port Elizabeth East Football Association (PEEFA) club hosted its own Easter Weekend Tournament for the communities of Westville, Joe Slovo, KwaDwesi Extension, KwaDwesi, Bayland, KwaMagxaki, Zwide, and Veeplaas at Veeplaas Turf and Mawabo Dyubhele Sport Complex.
According to PEEFA president, Luyanda Ncwadi, the local football association (LFA) had not secured any sponsorship. Consequently, the LFA decided to contribute money out of their own pockets to keep their communities entertained during the Easter long weekend.
“We are delighted to announce that some masters’ teams joined us to be part of the tournament. We divided the teams into four groups, starting with a round robin, and the top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals.”
Some teams bid farewell to the tournament after being eliminated in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Young Aces FC delivered a commanding 7-1 victory over Veeplaas Masters FC at Veeplaas Turf. It was a do-or-die situation as Mighty Warriors FC edged out Forresters FC 3-2. The hot favourites Young Teenagers FC succumbed 2-1 to Real Aces FC during their spectacular match. To the dismay of United Brothers FC supporters, their team suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Young Bucks FC Over-35 side.
