A NATIONWIDE initiative to boost literacy and numeracy skills amongst South African schoolchildren saw 1000 schools and non-profit organisations (NPOs) receive mobile library trolleys, as announced recently by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, alongside executives from Oxford University Press South Africa (OUPSA) and AVBOB.
The 2025 Road to Literacy campaign included over 100 beneficiaries from the Eastern Cape, with Uitenhage Primary School among
the institutions set to receive the valuable educational resources.
Other Eastern Cape recipients included Arcadia Primary School, Brylin Primary School and Caritas Primary School in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Each mobile library trolley, valued at R57 000, contains 500 OUPSA books carefully selected to support literacy and numeracy skills in alignment with the CAPS curriculum.
The campaign, which represented a total investment of R57 million, is designed to support Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education initiatives by providing materials in all 11 official written
languages of South Africa.
Gwarube praised the initiative during a panel discussion last week, saying, "This initiative is a powerful example of what can be achieved through partnerships. The campaign addresses a pressing national priority, the development of foundational literacy and numeracy, while supporting policy frameworks aimed at integrating diversity into school curricula."
The 2025 campaign marked substantial growth from its inaugural year in 2022, when only 180 library trolleys were distributed.
This year's effort will see more than 500 000 books distributed na-
tionwide, double the number from 2024.
Karen Simpson, Managing Director of OUPSA, emphasised the importance of mother tongue literacy, "Access to books in a learner's mother tongue has a profound impact on their ability to grasp foundational concepts, stay engaged in the classroom, and remain in the education system."
The mobile trolleys were specifically designed to be durable and accessible in shared or under-resourced learning environments.
They included materials for both reading and mathematics development, making the campaign one of a few national projects focused on
both literacy and numeracy at the foundational phase.
AVBOB Group CEO, Carl van der Riet highlighted the campaign's core purpose, "Literacy and numeracy are academic skills and critical tools for participation, for opportunity and dignity. “They are the building blocks of future learning and the means by which children are empowered to shape their own lives."
The selection process involved 8 661 nominations from across all nine provinces, submitted by educators, caregivers, community leaders and members of the public, underscoring the nationwide engagement with the initiative.

A COLLABORATIVE initiative between the Department of Basic Education, Baby Soft® and Domestos made significant strides in addressing the critical issue of “toilet loss” in South African schools, according to results released last month.
The "Unstoppable Together" campaign, launched in 2024, tackled the widespread neglect and improper maintenance of school toilets across the Eastern Cape province, with remarkable improvements in sanitation facilities serving nearly 100 000 children.
Last year at the training session held at Happydale Special School in Algoa Park, the PE Express reported that representatives from 18 schools across Nelson Mandela Bay attended the event, where they participated in practical training sessions that covered a variety of cleaning techniques and best practices for maintaining school facilities.
The aim was to ensure that the schools were not only clean and safe for learners and staff, but also to improve working conditions for the cleaning personnel.
Wilna le Roux, a representative from School Health and Social Planning, Eastern Cape Department of Education, emphasised the importance of the initiative.
“We have identified 18 schools to take part in this programme. Maintaining clean and safe schools is essential for the well-being of our learners and staff. This training not only equips our cleaners with better skills, but it also helps bridge the gap of understanding between cleaners and school management,” she said at the time.
Different media personalities and influencers, such as Zizo Tshwete, Catherine Constantinides, and Gqeberha-born Babalwa Mcaciso, were present to help spread awareness.
Now, a year later, the collaborative initiative has released results from a recent audit.
Significant improvements revealed in endline audit
The initiative, which targeted 300 schools in the Eastern Cape representing 99 043 learners aged between 5 and 14 years old, began with a comprehensive baseline audit to assess the state of school toilets.
Baby Soft® Brand Manager, Siyolise Shinga, described the campaign as “a resounding success” following the release of the endline audit results. “Overall, the number of school toilets meeting minimum criteria increased substantially.
44% of toilet cubicles overall passed the endline audit, up from only 8% at the start of the campaign. These results are a testament to what’s possible when we work together,” Shinga said.
Essential supplies made the difference
With support from the Department of Basic Education, fieldworkers visited participating schools to provide essential clean-
ing tools and supplies.
• Access to bleach rose from 67% to 79% of schools
• Provision of uniforms for cleaning staff improved from 35% to 49%
• Personal Protective Equipment availability surged from 31% to an impressive 93%
• Toilet paper availability increased dramatically from 61% to 99%
“When a child can use a clean toilet with access to toilet paper, and when a cleaner is properly equipped and protected, it sends a powerful message: you matter. These are the foundations of respect, health, and human rights, and we’re proud to play a part in helping schools uphold them,” Shinga explained.
Education fuelled sustainable improvement
The campaign’s educational component provided critical training for cleaning staff and implemented administrative systems to maintain cleanliness.
• Use of cleaning rosters increased from
1.7% to 43%
• Implementation of daily cleaning checklists rose from 0.3% to 42%
• Frequency of toilet cleaning (at least once daily) doubled from 23% to 48%
• Cleaner motivation increased significantly, with 79% reporting feeling extremely motivated compared to 64% at the campaign’s start
Many cleaning staff reported a newfound sense of pride and purpose in their ability to make a difference in learners’ lives.
The road ahead
Despite the encouraging results, Shinga acknowledged there remained “a long road ahead to ensure lasting change in school sanitation.”
“The data gathered through this process serves as a powerful starting point – providing clear evidence of what’s working and where urgent attention is still needed to ensure long-term, sustainable change,” Shinga concluded.
AFTER many entries to our “Young Heroes” campaign, PE EXPRESS is proud to announce our winners. Chloe-Jade Preston (12) has been selected as the first-place winner, followed by Ethan Fourie (9) in second place and Tian Diedericks (18) in third place. These three young individuals have shown exceptional dedication to making a positive impact in their communities in Gqeberha. Here are their stories.
Chloe-Jade Preston (12)
Chloe-Jade is a Grade 6 learner at Summerwood Primary School.
In a letter sent to the Express by her school's ICT Head, Bronwen Jonson, she has said that Chloe-Jade is one of those remarkable kids who, no matter what life throws at her, continues to rise.
"Her Granny, with whom she lives, made us aware of the charity work which she started in Grade 5 in 2024. Early in 2024, Chloe-Jade had a heartfelt idea — to give something special to children who have nothing at Christmas. She always prays for those living on the streets and those in need," the letter said.
The letter said Chloe-Jade had started collecting teddies and asked her Granny to find out which organisation needed them the most.
The letter also revealed that this year, as a part of the Mr and Miss Eastern Cape Primary Schools Competition, Chloe-Jade has gone above and beyond.
She has done the following:
• Asked her uncle to sponsor cupcakes so that she could spoil the SAPS and also gave some to the Netcare Casualties.
• Helped at a soup kitchen; she also collected blankets and handed them out.
• Donated clothes and Bibles to a family who lost their home in a fire.
• Handed out toys and spent time at the Livingstone Paediatric Ward.
Ethan Fourie (9)
Ethan Fourie, also known as The Recycling Kid, has loved nature from a very early age.
He started recycling from preschool years and has continued doing so into his primary school years.
He decided to start "The Recycling Kid" at age 8 to educate, motivate, and encourage young and old to look after the environment. He adds great value to glass recycling initiatives and promotes them.
He encouraged many businesses in Gqeberha to join in the recycling initiatives as well. Ethan attends many beach clean-ups and encourages his peers and businesses to join in.
He is well-known among many schools, organisations such as WESSA, The Glass Recycling Company, and local communities. He has made a large impact on businesses at Baywest Mall, such as Pick n Pay, Spur, John Dory's, Panarottis, and Rocomamas, to name a few.
He has over 2,200 followers on Facebook and uses this to educate and document his journey of keeping our planet green.
He attends Kabega Primary School, which is also a well-known Green Initiative School. Ethan is also the winner of the Pick n Pay National Environmental Awareness Hero Award 2024.
He has also received many accolades from his school concerning environmental awareness. It is a continuous journey that will surely grow from here.
Tian Diedericks (18)
Tian Diedericks is an 18-year-old cyclist and a cancer survivor. His journey through illness has inspired him to dedicate his life to helping others.
Tian chose to turn his story into a source of hope, using his love for cycling to raise awareness and funds for various causes. Tian is more than an athlete — he is a motivational speaker and a mentor to those in need of guidance and encouragement.
He rides not only for personal achievement but also to support meaningful initiatives, proving that sport can be a powerful tool for change. When he's not behind his books or training on his bike, Tian volunteers at Gardmed ambulance services.
With aspirations of becoming a paramedic after school, he continues to put others first, always seeking ways to be of service.
Driven by his own experiences and a deep desire to uplift others, Tian lives by the motto: "Be the difference."

TWO talented Gqeberha rugby players, Joandre van Jaarsveld and Silindezihle Ntshokoma, both learners at Grey High School, have been selected to participate in a prestigious international exchange programme with Hurstpierpoint College in the United Kingdom.
Joining Van Jaarsveld and Ntshokoma on this international opportunity is Akhumzi Masoka (17), another Grey High School learner who hails from Humansdorp.
Robbi Kempson, Head of Rugby at Grey High School, announced the selection with pride.
"These young men have been selected by the Grey High School Rugby Club to go on a student exchange to Hurstpierpoint College in the United Kingdom," said Kempson.
He said that they will be accommodated at the school's boarding house on Hurstpierpoint College Lane for the duration of their exchange, under the pastoral care of Fred Pierrepont, the Head of Rugby for Hurst.
The exchange will run from August 24 to December 7, offering the learners a unique opportunity to experience both academic and sporting life in the UK.
Van Jaarsveld expressed his gratitude for being chosen.
"I feel privileged that I was selected," said Van Jaarsveld.
"I'm excited about the whole experience. I have never been outside of South Africa, so this is a whole new life experience."
Van Jaarsveld further said that he is looking forward to experiencing a school and culture in a different country.
For Ntshokoma, the sporting as-
pect holds particular appeal.
"I'm very excited. This is a great opportunity to play rugby in a new environment," said Ntshokoma.
"It is also exciting to be at a different school, one that is a co-ed school."
Kempson further emphasised the broader educational value of the programme.
"The reciprocity has been afforded between the two schools for young scholars to engage in each other's programmes, both scholastic and on the sporting front," said Kempson.
"The impact that this experience can have on their maturity, independence, social skills, and cultural awareness is invaluable."
Kempson said that the exchange, now in its second year, has already proven successful.
"We have three boys from Hurst arriving with us later this month, and the exchange is in its second year, after having three boys at Grey High in 2024," said Kempson.
He further said that the exchange, although in its infancy, has been a huge success, and a firm bond has formed between the schools and players.
Kempson said that academic continuity has been carefully considered.
"The tests and exams for third and fourth terms will be written under supervision at Hurst, so they will need to attend class and ensure their academics are not neglected," said Kempson.
The opportunity, however, comes with significant costs, including international flights ranging from R15 000 to R23 000, short-term visitor visa fees of approximately R3 000, and passport application expenses.
To raise the necessary funds, both Van Jaarsveld and Ntshokoma have established BackaBuddy campaigns to help fund their journey.
"The parents of the Hurst boys that came over are willing to help with most, if not all other costs associated with the UK side; however, financial support is still needed for flights and administrative costs," said Kempson.
He said that they look forward to building the relationship between the two schools and affording these young men the best possible opportunities to flourish through the exchange programme.

LEAH Welcome (14), a promising young hockey player, was recently named the brand ambassador for South African Children and Youth Ambassadors, making her the first Eastern Cape recipient of this award, while also making the Eastern Province Hockey A-team for the second year.
Speaking to PE Express, she said that she hopes to be an inspiration to the youth who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Leah said, "Many children my age want to reach their full potential in life, especially those playing hockey. Their dream is to one day play at a provincial level and sometimes, their dreams go unachieved, as most do not have the funds to compete at a high level. Sometimes, you have to pay a fortune to keep your place in your team, which is rather unfair, because they will never really know how good they are or if they are good enough to play provincial hockey."
She added that she is grateful to be able to play provincial hockey. "I pushed myself many times, and my coaches especially. They push me to be the best version of myself, on and off the field, and I am grateful I can make an impact on others to pursue their dreams as well. I am also excited about this Eastern Province selection as it is my second year. Once a player is chosen three times, then they qualify to play on a national level, which is my dream."
Reminiscing about when her
journey started, Leah said, "The first year I made provincial hockey, it became clearer to me that this is my dream. I heard that I can finally qualify to be a national player after my third provincial selection and I thought that it would really be good for me, as an individual, but also for the other children, for them to know that it is possible to achieve this milestone, especially in the Northern areas where I come from. I want to be their role model in the future."
Leah said, "My journey at St Peter's Hockey Club has been great. It is not just a hockey club, but my family as well. They pushed me the most and helped me reach my full potential. We at St Peter's want to help those who show potential and give them a chance at being great. We seek more people who show promise to apply for the club to see what fun it is and learn how to play well in a team."
Leah aims to help those who come from underprivileged areas by seeking hockey gear donations for them. "I believe that the Northern area kids need to experience how it feels to not be hindered in reaching their hockey dreams. I just want to see how happy they get when they receive this donation, because it can really help those who are good at hockey but can't afford to. Donations can come in the form of any hockey gear, like sticks, shin guards, and hockey shoes."
For more information or to donate, contact Leah's mother, Stacey, via email at welcomestacey7@ gmail.com.
THE Community Chest annual Winter Woolly Drive is in full swing, and the response has already been overwhelming.
They have collected several bags full of warm clothing, including knitted jumpers, cosy beanies and lovely handmade jackets. Community Chest recently visited one of their ECD (Early Childhood Development) beneficiaries in Joe Slovo and brought warm smiles to these little ones.
The principal of Kamvalethu Day Care, Nokuzola Mphalisa, warmly welcomed the donation, expressing her sincere gratitude. “Many of our children come to school without jackets or even shoes,” she said. “With the recent cold snap, this donation couldn’t have come at a better time.”
“The joy on the children’s faces, all dressed up in their winter outfits, fills us with such a humble feeling,” said Colette Theron, Marketing Manager at Community Chest.
"As the cold weather continues, we remain committed to reaching more people affected by the bitter conditions. Our call remains for the public to continue clearing out their cupboards and donating to this worthy cause."
Drop-off boxes are located at all the Pick n Pay stores in the Nelson Mandela Metro, Walmer Park Shopping Centre, and Boardwalk Mall.
If your company would like to participate in the Winter Woolly Drive, contact the Community Chest office on 041 582 1592.

CAN the champion racehorse trainer
Alan Greeff do it again?
Greeff is enjoying a brilliant season and starts his next assignment with the R150 000 East Cape Breeders Stakes at the Fairview Turf track in Greenbushes on Friday.
My Best Shot, trained by Greeff, became the first horse to win all three legs of the East Cape Sophomore Challenge when he won the Derby in May.
It is no surprise, then, that racing fans are asking whether Greeff will have another Triple Crown winner in the East Cape Challenge for fillies and mares.
Stormy Appeal, trained by Gavin Smith in 2003, is the only horse to have won all three legs of this Challenge.
It looks unlikely that we will see that feat repeated, but Greeff has already done magic this season. He might have another few tricks up his sleeve.
The Challenge could not have started on a more exciting note than with the Breeders Stakes, which is the feature race at Friday’s meeting, over 1200m.
This is the race of champions with many famous names on the list of past winners.
In the last eight years, there have been four winners of the Breeders Stakes which went on to become the East Cape Horse of the Year in that season.
They are Phedra (2023), World Radar (2020), Star Burst Galaxy (2018) and Clear Sailing (2017).
Fourteen fillies and mares will go to post in Friday’s renewal. Greeff and Smith will saddle five runners each.
There are two interesting visitors which will challenge the locals. Winter Greeting is trained in Gauteng by Sean Tarry, and Sweetie Darling is from the stable of Western Cape conditioner Glen Kotzen.
The pick of the Greeff runners looks to be the three-year-old Splicethemainbrace, which will have champion jockey Richard Fourie in the irons.
The Breeders Stakes is race six of the eight races at 15:20. The meeting starts at 12:25 with the first race (free entry).
The second leg of the Challenge is the Paddock Stakes over 1600m and the third and last leg is the Jockey Club Stakes over 2000m.
Last Friday’s meeting was a good one for the three top Fairview stables of Greeff, Smith and Kelly Mitchley.
THE LSEN and U/13 squads will be the first players to represent Eastern Province (EP) at the upcoming national youth rugby tournaments.
This year, the U/18 LSEN (learners with special education needs) Week takes place in Bethal, Mpumalanga, from June 27 to July 2.
The EP u/13s don’t have to travel that far. They stay in the Eastern Cape for their week, which is from June 30 to July 4, at Selborne College in East London.
Coach JD Esterhuizen won’t have to work too much on combinations and interplay as most in the LSEN group of 22 players are from Bergsig in Kariega.
Bergsig has 16 players in the squad. The Gqeberha school, Westview (4), has the second-best representation.
There is one player, Mynhardt Hattingh, from another Gqeberha school, Cape Recife, in the group.
With Border not at the week, EP included Liza Tetani, a player from Baysville in East London.
The EP boys are expected to be very competitive at the week. Bergsig has produced solid performances against strong opposition this year, which is an indication that EP will be up for the task.
The LSEN Week is always a crowd favourite, with running rugby the name of the game. In this regard, EP certainly has the speed and skill to match the other provinces.
What might be a challenge is the expected
cold conditions. Bethal should be much colder than the East Cape visitors are used to at this time of the year.
Twelve schools are represented in the u/13 squad of 23 players.
Jeffreys Bay and Albertyn have four players each in the group, followed by Grey with three.
Sunridge, Gill College and Paul Sauer all have two players each going to East London.
The schools with one representative each are Westering, Union, Port Alfred, Woodridge, Kabega and Hankey.
It will be a very tough start at the tournament for the EP boys. They take on the mighty Western Province (WP) in their first match.
The Blue Bulls and WP are considered the top u/13 sides in the country. It will be an enormous challenge, but also a huge opportunity, for the EP players to show what they can do against strong opposition.
The U/13 Academy side also has a difficult opener. They play against the Southwestern Districts.
All the other EP squads are also hard at work in preparation for the respective upcoming events.
The U/18 Craven Week team suffered a setback. The loose head prop from Grey High, Daniel Naude, had to be replaced.
“He had an accident on his motorbike. He’s been replaced in the squad by Janu Janse van Rensburg (Nico Malan),” confirmed the secretary of the EP High Schools Rugby Association, Fenner Barnard.

Seven United FC crowned ZAFA Premier League champions
HISTORY was made after Seven United FC lifted the Zakhele Football Association (ZAFA) Premier League cup at Dynamos Ground on Sunday.
Following their torrid time over the last season, United proved their critics wrong as they won the most prestigious trophy since their inception. United are renowned for being cup specialists, but as of Sunday, they are counted amongst ZAFA sides to have won the title that every side wants to clinch. In their last game of the season, United were ruthless as they trounced Young Neighbours FC 3-0 at Dynamos Ground on Sunday. From 16 league games, United managed to win 13 games, drew twice and lost only one game. Eleven Angels FC, Golden Brothers FC and Swartkops FC, who were
the title chasers, failed to make their supporters jubilant.
Island City FC, who will campaign in ZAFA First Division, went down 2-1 to Ghetto Eleven FC, who narrowly escaped relegation in the last moments of the season. Charge United FC, also already relegated, just threw in the towel following their back-to-back losses.
Other ZAFA Premier League results:
Dynamos FC 0-2 United Spirits FC
City All Stars FC 2-0 Royal Blues
Stone Breakers FC 1-2 Young Neighbours FC
Swartkops FC 0-2 United Comrades FC Leeds United FC 1-1 Golden Brothers FC Eleven Angels FC 3-2 Power Lads FC

They saddled a double apiece which takes Greeff to 150 winners at Fairview this season. It is going to be very interesting to see whether he can better his own record of 176 set in 2019. He has eight meetings in which to do that. Smith is now on 106, and Mitchley is six winners away from reaching 50.
The chase for the local jockeys’ title is really hotting up after defending champion Kendall Minnie, Yuzae Ramzan and Charles Ndlovu all rode a winner this past Friday. Eldin Webber is still on top but is out for the season with a broken leg. Ramzan and Ndlovu are leading the chasing pack, just three winners behind Webber.
