Hi Everyone, Hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I must say, I really enjoyed mine!

Our grandson had his Senior Prom on Sat. night and our daughter worked the after Prom party at his high school. So naturally, they slept in late. He of course, got home later than his mom. My husband and I, on the other hand were up early and looking forward to our day. We delivered flowers to Holy Name of Mary Cemetery and McDonough Cemetery in Algiers to his grandmothers than we headed to Buras to deliver flowers to Our Lady of Good Harbor Cemetery to my mom, sister, and grandmother. Took our time coming back up. And of course stopped in to visit with Ronnie’s mom.

It was a really good visit. Our daughter and grandchildren headed out to spend the rest of their day with our oldest daughter and her family. Ronnie and I had a steak dinner to finish off a very relaxing day. I would say this Mother’s Day was really nice.

PPSO Awards Ceremony 2017 Wednesday, May 17, 2017 On Thursday, May 11, 2017, Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich Jr. hosted the 2017 Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) Awards Ceremony at the Belle Chasse High School Auditorium.

“We gather here this evening to recognize the hard work and dedication of all the men and women of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Turlich. “I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to work alongside you, serving as your Sheriff.”

The event commenced with the PPSO Young Marines presenting and honoring our nation’s flag, followed by the awards ceremony and culminating with a reception with food and refreshments.

Among those in attendence, were Parish President Amos Cormier III, State Representative Chris Leopold, Judge Kevin Conner, District Attorney Charles Ballay, Plaquemines Parish Fire Department Chief Roy Robichaux and Justice of the Peace Davey Naquin.

It is the vision of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office to serve our community by forming a partnership based on communication, cooperation, and mutual trust.

This is one of the bouquets I made for the cemeteries. This year I decide simplicity was the best way to go. This bouquet consists of roses, leather leaf fern, ruscus, and limonium. I also made some bouquets with carnations, lilies, larkspur, gyp, waxflowers, and cremons. I love working with flowers.

Guess I will continue to design bouquets for those who still call me to make them. Thank you for your loyalty. I was very sadden to see not as many flowers in the cemeteries as in previous years. Guess a lot of people have moved away or just too busy. Let us not forget those who cared for us. If they were still here, they would still be doing for us.

7th grade students at Belle Chasse Academy worked on a project called No Ordinary Coronary in science class. They learned about the human heart, associated medical problems and the relationship between science and engineering. Students then brainstormed on how to remove plaque from an obstructed artery and finally were able to perform their procedures on a model using clear PVC tubing and frosting representing the plaque build-up!

CHRIST THE KING PARISH SCHOOL PRESENTS DON’T SAY NO TO THE USO Audry Brooks and Patricia Corradi (I don’t know if any kiddos in the group in the back are on the no photo list, I can’t find mine to check)

The 7th grade class of 2017 presented their 7th grade play, Don’t Say No to the USO, on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. Three performances were held and the audiences for each performance were on their feet cheering and clapping by the end.

The play is based on a spy ring being conducted through the USO and soldiers and government agents coming together to expose the spy ring and save US ships and soldiers.

Students sang a heartwarming rendition of Together We Must Stand at the end of the performance.

Belle Chasse Academy’s 4H students have been learning archery. They had perfect weather for some practice and a little competition!!

OWA is positioned to be a more affordable alternative to the pricier Disney properties in Orlando, Florida. CALL US TODAY...SELL IT TOMORROW! On the way in we set up a troll, around a stationary rig, looking for any hold over wahoo or maybe a tuna. We marked some. Ed mentioned that looks like a school of tuna. As quick as he got the words out we got hit on a pink and green Russelure. This was a better blackfin. A few more passes but no takers. The school was still there so we set up a chunk drift. This move paid off and we added our fourth yellowfin to our collection. Unfortunately a pile of sharks moved in and targeted our boat. We called it for the day.

This story is from 4.16.17 Captain Hoop’s boat is under repair this week.

Ever see a fog rainbow? It is not uncommon down here. I had 2 guys that just wanted to fish for 2 days. They did not want to keep any fish. We waited at the marina for a long time. The best we saw until we got to our destination was the marina itself. The river was socked in bad. I have radar and back up electronics but it was still a challenge. Have to trust your electronics. There was almost no traffic in the river which was a blessing.

The winds started blowing around 9:00 and everything was already stirred up from the day before. With a rising tide all day the redfish were pushed up in the canes. I searched all day for redfish but only managed 10 keeper trout for our efforts. We had our catch of the day grilled at Venice Marina. Never had grilled trout before but I will have it again for sure.

The next day we went to the other side of the river. I found some good water and set my hopes up for some redfish. Our first cast gave us a fish other than our targeted redfish. Who would complain about a 20 inch trout though.

Looks like the tuna are in the transition mode. There are a lot of smaller size summer tuna hitting the docks now. This still yielded a good amount of tuna meat for them.

I did not have a trip and was getting ready to mow my neighbor’s and my lawn The combined properties are about 4 acres so it is not a half hour job.

My wife said it was too nice of a day and I should go relax on the water. DON’T TELL ME TWICE! I made a few calls but every body had something to do or were already on the water. I headed out alone in my bay boat. When I do this I wear my inflatable life preserver. I decided to go out and get a pair of red snapper first. Going out was not bad. When I started fishing the snapper were very small. Being in 50 feet of water I did not mind reeling up a lot and releasing many shorts unharmed. Eventually I managed 2 good ones and by then the winds had picked up enough to have me want to get inshore.

Once inshore I saw 4 boats fishing an oyster reef. Without going there I decided to hit another near by. Once I put the power pole down I casted and the cork went down. Wow good trout on the first cast. 5 casts and 4 trout in the box. One threw the hook before I could get it in the boat.

From there we started finding a few redfish. Most of them were rat reds but these guys just wanted something to bend the rod. This day was a lot better fishing. They did not want to take any pictures. As we would get a good size slot red I would tell it that it was it’s lucky day.

Although the reds were cooperative that day we only found 2 trout. Only kept a few to fish for the day. They had grilled redfish for supper that evening.

I missed a few more and picked a few more then it shut off, 100% shut off!

Not even a hard head catfish wanted anything. I ran north of Bay Adams to look at a place I had not fished since last summer. One of the islands were not there any more. The current running around it almost always held good fish.

The current has taken away the island. A bit further up into a canal I noticed the canal walls had opened up and a new breach of about 20 feet had opened. Loosing land very fast. I managed some short trout and rat reds and one good sheepshead. Cleaned them later that evening.

A casualty of the heavy winds we have been having was noticed at my last stop of the day. Eventually the Power Pole knuckle broke. They covered it under warrantee. It is on a Fed-Ex truck as of yesterday. I never left it down and took off.

This was just the winds and waves that I have been fishing in. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

The next day One Eye Ed needed a deckhand. I was more than glad to get on board. We headed out to the floaters but stopped for bait at a spot that normally holds bait. After almost an hour of cast netting we only managed 10 pogies. We decided to run with what we had. Once there several boats had bent rods. We got our bait out and waited. We were watching others hook up next to us and our bait was just swimming around. After what seemed like forever we get hit.

The customer was right next to the rod and picked it up and gave a Bill Dance hook set. There went one of our baits and also our first chance at a tuna. Hard lesson to swallow. As our day went we managed 3 yellowfin and a small blackfin tuna.

Cleveland Cavalier mega star LeBron James has moved from receiving no consideration as a top 20 basketball player of all time to the exalted position of challenging the greatest old school players for the G.O.A.T. title. James was vilified during most of his first ten years in the NBA for several reasons, many revolving around the old adage that “today’s kids don’t have the chops of the old-timers”. Well, Michael Jordan did have those chops and he had no problem moving into the top position long before his career reached fourteen years as James’ has reached….and he was barely Old School. But he did attend college, stayed three years and paid his dues his first couple of years in the NBA before ascending into the realm of greatness. James was a megastar in high school; the most talented high school player to be NBA-ready in history. No one has come close to what he has done since Day One. Is James the last guy you want shooting a midrange or three-point jumper in a one-point or tie game with less than ten seconds left? Maybe not. But is James the guy you would give the ball to for a massive drive and lay-up or a last-minute pass to an uncovered teammate? I’d say yes. James has been everything an individual should be in this or any other professional league: a man who does what he is capable of doing and makes the others around him that much better. James is a model citizen and husband; except for a show offish move to Miami and some irritating pre-game routines (chalk, anyone?), James has been all that he can be. Is he better than Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Larry Bird? In some areas, yes. In other areas, no. Both James and Jordan could play any position, guard any position and impose their will on an opponent. Jordan was more the showman; James the facilitator. Both could assist and rebound and score, James in the high 20’s and Jordan around 30. But why argue the point? James is a force in a league of players obviously superior in athletic ability than the league produced in the mid-80’s to early 2000’s.

Jordan had better players around him who stayed longer and remained healthier than James’s teammates. Jordan also had much better head coaching with Phil Jackson than James has experienced . Yet James’ will produced teams that could compete and win championships, not with the frequency of the Chicago Bulls but championships nevertheless. There are more teams with championship potential in the NBA today than 20 to 30 years ago. And no one….I repeat….no one…..ever took a beaten team like the Cavaliers, down three games to one in the 2016 championship against the Golden State Warriors, to the heights James took Cleveland.

It stands as the greatest championship comeback in NBA history and no, as I said in a story last year, Golden State is my team and I hurt after that meltdown. Draymond Green’s mouth had a little to do with it as did Klay Thompson’s, but you don’t poke a wounded tiger in the eye and expect not to get clawed or bitten. So, start with James and Jordan and build the rest of your all-time NBA team. There’s your soul and inspiration. And to water down my argument a bit, I hope James does not repeat as NBA champion because the Warriors have some legend-building to do as well.

We won’t get into the Steph Curry legacy just yet. It’s ‘way too much fun to watch Curry enjoy the playing of the game of basketball. This is about LeBron. And Michael. And history. Historical chapter three begins this week in Oakland.

The OLPH Catholic School senior girls indoor ball team advanced to the city playoffs in the Catholic School Athletic League after an excellent regular season and coming in as runner up in Westbank playoffs. The boys came out as the New Orleans runner up during what ended up as an all Westbank Championship game against Visitation of Our Lady (VOL). OLPH lost against VOL in the Westbank playoffs and unfortunately suffered the same fate during the city playoffs. They played with such strength of character and determination that although they were not victorious they gave our small school, with big opportunities a reason to be proud.

Guess Who’s Baaacckkkk! The Tigers Have The SEC By The Tale Three weeks ago, most folks would’t have given the LSU Tigers any chance to win the SEC title, let alone the SEC West. The best most could hope for was a spilt of the last four SEC series and a #5 or #6 seed in the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama. Many had been calling for the resignation of Paul Mainieri, the LSU skipper who has continued the excellence of the baseball program for the past eleven years. Mainieri, who would be considered the best coach of all time at all but three colleges (LSU, Southern Cal and Texas) in college baseball history, has taken his soft-spoken and informative narrative to new heights with the regular-season finish of this team. In their last twelve league games, including two series against teams who were Western Division leaders earlier this season, LSU only lost one game to South Carolina. They swept a hapless Alabama team and swept both a pitching-strong Auburn team and a well-balanced, division-leading Mississippi State team in Starkville last weekend.

Now the Tigers face a chance to extend their SEC Tournament Championships under Mainieri to six - having won in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014 - to go along with four league championships, including a shared title this year with Florida. They’ve won the west six times, including this year. They’ve also fought their way back into the Super Regional Championship hosting conversation, already clinching a Regional hosting berth unless they completely blow the Tournament matchups this week.

Despite injuries, the Tigers have resorted to a few old tricks to get where they are this week. Johnny Wholestaff, Mainieri’s name for a bullpen that lacks consistent performances, is doing it again. Freshmen have stepped up in the field, on the mound and in the batter’s box to produce a keen eye and better than anticipated batting averages (second in average only to hot-hitting Kentucky) by being more patient on the plate and taking walks more often than usual. Their fielding leads the league, their base running may be the best they’ve had under Mainieri and they have their obligatory All American starter on the mound in Alex Lange.

Mainieri never hesitates to move players around, both in and out of the lineup and within the lineup as well. There may not be a better coach than this four-time Coach of The Year (Skip Bertman won six) than Mainieri in performing this duty. Bertman was a pitcher’s coach, first and foremost, but Mainieri is more rounded with his lineup.

Mainieri does not benefit from the sluggers LSU produced in the 1990’s under the Gorilla Ball era of springy aluminum bats but he has sent fourteen players to the Big Leagues.

It’s the same old tale (story). LSU gets down, gets sloppy, gets inspired, gets on track, gets right and gets going towards Omaha. Don’t doubt a moment that the Tigers won’t be headed back to Nebraska next month. The Coastal Carolinas of the world have taken their pound of flesh from the Tigers and I don’t think LSU will be caught napping again in post-season play. Their position as the best college baseball program of the past 27 years with one of the five finest baseball coaches of the past 27 years should take the Tigers to the CWS. Magic and Tiger tailgates always dominate the LSU appearances and don’t bet the farm that they won’t return in their quest to win Mainieri’s second national title and their seventh. They probably will never catch Southern California’s 12 titles but the era was different then, just as it was under John Wooden and UCLA basketball.

But no one probably will surpass LSU’s six titles, tied with Texas at #2. However, Texas baseball is in a recovery mode after Augie Garrido left last year. See you in the Midwest in June, Tiger fans!

LDWF to Host WETSHOP 2017 for Teachers July 9-14 at Grand Isle Research Lab

Who says that since school is out that all of the learning goes on break too? Use the extra family time this summer to learn a little bit about the butterfly life cycle and use that knowledge to plan a working butterfly garden. Butterfly gardening can appeal to almost any kind of gardener. Whether you are the environmentalist gardener who likes to plant gardens in order to show support for endangered species or the mathematician gardener who likes to plant in patterns of 3’s and 5’s, there’s a butterfly garden out there waiting for you.

April 13, 2017 - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will hold WETSHOP 2017, a coastal awareness workshop for science, history and social studies teachers, July 9-14 at the LDWF Grand Isle Research Lab. The focus of this six-day workshop will be to provide teachers with an in-depth look at issues related to wetland ecology and coastal land loss in Louisiana. Participating teachers will accrue 55 hours of instruction covering a wide variety of topics, including wetland ecology, fisheries management and coastal restoration. Teachers will also spend a portion of each day in the field learning about maritime forests, barrier island beach ecology, coastal restoration projects, bird life, marsh and swamp habitats and marine organisms.

This year, participants will visit one of the largest coastal restoration projects in the world.

All participating teachers will receive standards based correlated wetland lessons and many other educational resources from numerous sponsoring agencies and organizations.

Lodging and meals are provided once participants reach the workshop site. Upon completion of the workshop, each participant will receive a $250 stipend. An additional stipend is available during the Academic Year (AY) upon completion of a wetland stewardship project.

WETSHOP is sponsored by LDWF in partnership with the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) and the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program in conjunction with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation. WETSHOP is also a collaborative effort with partners that provide experts in the field for presentations and educational materials. These agencies/organizations include: BTNEP, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Louisiana Nature Conservancy, Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, Coastal Planning Protection and Restoration Act, Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium.

Butterfly gardening is easy to grasp once you understand two main parts. The first part involves the larval stage and host plant selection. According to the rules of binomial nomenclature, all butterflies are members of the order lepdoptera within the class of insecta. Lepidopterans are holometabolous, which means they display complete metamorphosis in their life cycle. There are four distinct life stages: egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage becomes important because of host plant preference. The larval stages of different butterflies feed on specific plants and by selecting different host plants, the gardener can focus his/her efforts at certain butterfly species. The Gulf Fritillary butterfly uses passion flower vine as a host plant and the Giant Swallowtail uses a citrus plant as a host plant. Any book on butterflies will include information like this. Check the LSU AgCenter website for more information on butterfly gardening and specific information on the different host plants that attract certain butterflies. http://www. lsuagcenter.com/ The second part of butterfly gardening understanding nectar plants and their role in the butterfly lifecycle. The role of the adult butterfly is to lay eggs and help continue the next generation.

They fly around in search of suitable host plants while relying on flower nectar to provide the energy needed to do so. The inclusion of flowering plants that produce nectar are essential to any butterfly garden. Butterfly bush, Buddleia spp., is a commonly used plant in many gardens.

It is highly regarded as a nectar producer and is almost necessary for any butterfly garden.

Be generous with space when using it though. Buddleia can get around six feet tall and just as wide. Lantana is another nectar source that is commonly found in the garden. The brightly colored flowers and almost perennial growth habit in South Louisiana make it a common choice for any southern flower garden. Salvia flowers are some of the best nectar producing flowers in the entire garden and should be included on any butterfly-related list of plants.

As you can see, butterfly gardening isn’t difficult. Once you understand the use of host plants and nectar plants, you can then start to develop specialized gardens to attract specific butterflies. So, the next time you want to start a new garden and to help bring awareness to nature, think about putting a butterfly garden together and teaching someone near you

She tested positive for FIV, which is Feline Aids.

This disease is passed on through deep bite wounds or from mama cat. The life expectancy is 8-10 years, shorter if she lives in the shelter. Ivy would need to live in a home by herself or with a cat that has FIV. She is such a sweet, friendly girl. As soon as you open her kennel, she starts to purr and wants to give you love and attention.

Meet Miss Blanche Devareaux! This beauty was actually found hanging out with our colony cats.

Right off the bat we could tell Miss Blanche was not feral like the rest of the group but was actually quite social! She is a talker and a snuggler and will absolutely let you know it. There was no way we could leave this sweetie and decided to make her a PAWS cat so she could find a home of her own. She is now hanging out with us waiting for that special person to take her home.

3 1/2 year old Buck is a big boy with a big personality. His family surrendered him during tough times and this beautiful boy misses being in a home. Agents Cite Six People for Closed Season Red Snapper Violations Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited six subjects for alleged red snapper violations in the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Plaquemines Parish on May 16.

Agents were on a joint enforcement agreement (JEA) patrol and noticed a fishing vessel near an oil platform approximately 13 miles offshore. The subjects on the vessel were in possession of 10 Red Snapper and were approximately three miles beyond the nine nautical mile line.

Agents cited Ryan Baldassaro, 22, from Metairie, Nathan Randazzo, 18, from Marrero, Brandt Becnel, 21, from Belle Chase, Thomas Becnel Jr, 56, from Belle Chase, Patrick Becnel Jr, 24, from Belle Chase, and Nathaniel Peters, 22, from Metairie, for taking red snapper during a closed season. Agents seized 10 red snapper which were later donated to a local charity.

Commercial Season for King Mackerel in Louisiana Waters is Open The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries opened the commercial season for king mackerel on May 11, 2017 in Louisiana waters, previously closed on January 21, until the established quota is reached or projected to be reached.

The re-opening was made based on rule changes for the Gulf of Mexico that increased current quotas. The increase in quotas allows for additional harvest during the 2016 / 2017 commercial season.

Each year, a commercial quota is established for Gulf of Mexico group king mackerel

by NOAA Fisheries based on recommendations by the Gulf and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils. Based upon the new quota adjustments, the Western Gulf of Mexico quota increased to 1.1 million pounds, leaving an additional 65,000 pounds available for harvest.

Archery in Louisiana Schools Program Equipment Grants Provided More Than $100,000 to 60 Schools May 19, 2017 – The Archery in Louisiana Schools Program (ALAS), administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), provided more than $100,000 in equipment grants to 60 Louisiana schools in the last three years.

The grant program was set up to assist 20 new schools each year in getting involved in the ALAS program, part of the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP). Thanks to opportunities like the ALAS Equipment Loan Program there are now more than 20,000 students at more than 200 schools participating in Louisiana.

The development is next to a 16-field multi-sports complex which will also be adjacent to the new event center. The park to some is an answer to the closure of Six Flags in New Orleans East but that comparison is so ludicrous it’s beyond laughable. Six Flags never worked, its in a depressed, crime-active area and it was an old school amusement park done by a company that has not had many hits in this century. Its highly unlikely New Orleans would ever pursue anything remotely similar to OWA and you don’t have to ask OH-WHY? because you know better.

Yes, this sounds like a Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce pitch and it could be because we know the area well, having done one of our cartoon maps here in 2014 and traveled the county from one end to the other. Having spent much of my life along the beaches of California and the Gulf Coast, I don’t know of an area that offers beach life so close to under crowded and alternative vacation options for couples and families. With the financial resources of multiple casinos behind them, the Poarch Indians have done a marvelous thing by branching out into other entertainment venues. If this works in south Alabama, maybe something similar will work on the Northshore.

All we need is a little more vision from our tourism folks and a willingness to promote an area that has been sucking wind when it comes to real tourism dollars. Forget New Orleans. Bring it here.
