Where there’s a Will, There’s a Wade Will Wade’s a talker. If he can walk the same walk, LSU basketball will be on the upswing by late spring. The 34-year old Tennessee native never played roundball in high school or college but had led his Virginia Commonwealth team to the Atlantic 10 regular season title last year and into the second round of the NCAA March Madness last year as well, losing to Final Four participant Oklahoma by only four points. His Rams beat George Mason twice this season, lost to Top Ten Baylor early in the season, split with Dayton and their former coach, Archie Miller, who just took the Indiana job and lost at home to Illinois by 18, the worst loss of the past campaign. Wade and Miller shared the best two-year record in the Atlantic 10 in 2015 and 2016. He’s obviously an X’s and O’s guy with plenty of enthusiasm and verbal bromides. Now the question is how well Wade can recruit. His best player from the past season was junior 6’7” forward Justin Tillman and he had a first-team all defensive star in redshirt senior forward, 6’7” Mo Alie-Cox. VCU loses six of their 13 roster players this year, most of them guards. Not to say Wade wouldn’t have done any better next year, but the roster depletion along with the multi-million dollar offer from LSU that essentially increased his salary 67% percent were two big factors in getting this young coach to move now. Wade was the Coach of the Year at Chattanooga in 2014 after leading his Rattlers to a second place finish in the Southern Conference as a 31-year

1/2 times what former NBA coach and Nevada head coach Eric Musselman makes. Musselman was an early odds-on favorite to get the LSU job, as the Tigers ostensibly reviewed his strangely structured career, including two stints as an NBA head coach, an assistant at LSU and years in the minor leagues of professional basketball. Another favorite dark horse was Steve Prohm, whose Iowa State teams have seen the NCAA tournament twice in the past two years and won three consecutive Big 12 titles. But Prohm, who makes $1.5 million, probably is holding out a few years for a bigger plum at a thoroughbred basketball school - perhaps North Carolina or Georgetown or something in the Big Ten. Prohm is 42. Archie Miller is 38. Wade may not be the sexiest hire or the most confidence-building young man that was available for the LSU basketball fan base to drool over but we’ll give beleaguered Athletic Director Joe Alleva a pass on this hire. He could have done a lot worse (and believe me, he’s great at doing a lot worse).

So far, Wade has hired a couple of his VCU coaches, a former Texas coach and former LSU basketball star Tasmin Mitchell for his staff. I guess we’ll all take a Wade and see attitude.

Ruby was the smallest of a litter of 5 Beagle mix puppies.

Her canine mother took extra care to be sure that little Ruby had enough food and attention. Now that she is in a foster home, Ruby’s foster mother says she is so sweet and really loves attention. She is a 5 month old lap puppy!

Ruby also loves to run in the yard and play with her toys.

She does well with other dogs as long as they are nice and polite, and not rough. An adult family with someone home during the day would be good for her. Ruby has been spayed and vaccinated. For more information on Ruby, please email START.

Pattycake is a five month old gray tabby kitten with white.

She has a medium length coat and big beautiful eyes. She was an abandoned kitten rescued when she was just a few weeks old. Pattycake gets along well with the cats in her foster home. Springtime Barbeque

Springtime is here and summer is just around the corner.

Flowers are in bloom and the trees are green, welcoming outdoor activities like cooking on the barbeque. As a kid, it was fun hanging out in the backyard watching the coals get red hot waiting to see what was going on the pit; deer sausage, burgers, chicken, ribs or hot dogs? It’s a wonderful time of year for barbeque.

The barbeque was first witnessed by Spanish explorers in the Caribbean during Columbus’s era. They saw roasted meats cooked over a grill with wooden frames consisting of sticks keeping meats above the fire where the flames and smoke rose, cooking and providing flavor to whatever was on the spit.

A few items I really enjoy cooking on the barbeque are apple smoked chicken wings, baby back pork ribs, burgers, sausage, skewered marinated shrimp, grilled salmon, prime steak, and venison. I sometimes marinate with wine, fresh herbs, virgin olive oil or even chilies to infuse and enhance flavors.

My favorite to barbeque is my Apple Smoke Chicken Wings. I smoke the wings for about 30 minutes and then I brush on my Cajun Asia Sweet Chili BBQ Sauce once the wings have cooked on both sides. The dominate sweetness in my barbeque sauce is light brown sugar so I always add it when the meat is almost finished cooking so the sugar doesn’t burn. The sauce will provide a welcoming caramel coating on the meat. I use a new 2 inch paint brush when basting the wings so there is less sauce wasted.

I always brush on two coats of sauce like when you paint your house to build one layer at a time. ENJOY!

Apple Smoked Chicken Wings Makes about 4 servings

Ingredients: 2 pounds chicken wings 2 tablespoons olive oil or canola 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh black pepper ½ lb. apple wood chips 1 cup Cajun Asian Sweet Chili BBQ Sauce Method: 1. Heat the barbeque pit and get the coals fiery hot.

2. In a medium mixing bowl add the chicken wings and season with olive oil, salt and pepper.

3. Soak wood chips in water for about 15 minutes.

4. Lift the grill and shake off the excess water then add ½ the wood chips to the coals.

5. Place chicken wings on the grill wing tip side down and cover barbeque pit.

6. If you’re using coals rather than a gas barbeque, maintain heat so coals get enough oxygen.

7. Smoke wings on the first side for at least 15 minutes before flipping.

Keep wings at least 8 inches above the flames so they don’t burn and cook slower for the smoking process.

8. Flip the wings and add the rest of the wood chips. Begin brushing on the barbeque sauce. Apply 2 coats of Cajun Asian Sweet Chili BBQ Sauce to each side and allow wings to cook at least 30-45 minutes depending on how hot your barbecue pit. The pit should be at least 350 degrees when starting.

Wings are done when they have a light char and skin is crisp and the meat is tender.

Recently I have had so many people express to me that their grandparents or great-grandparents have use this as part of a go to tonic for flu and other illnesses over the years. It is one of the most important things I do to begin each day; having raw organic apple cider vinegar with the “mother” be the first thing I ingest upon awaking. I realize it may be hard for some to stomach but the health benefits far outweigh the gross out factor. It’s like mother nature’s multi-purpose life elixir.

The healing power of apple cider vinegar has been known about dating back to 400 BC when the father of medicine, Hippocrates used it as a natural antibiotic and antiseptic to heal patients.

I began using ACV because of its amazing ability to alkalize the body. Even though apple cider vinegar is acidic, it creates the perfect alkaline environment in the body.

As a woman there are many factors that can throw our pH off. Consuming ACV has been an effective way to maintain a balanced pH.

The average life expectancy of a flowering pear is anywhere between 20 and 25 years.

The toughest variety of begonia that I have come across is the Baby Wing Begonia (Begonia x hybrida). Plant tags will tell you that it performs best in part sun/part shade conditions but I have seen do fine in a full sun location. It produces light green foliage and blooms either white or light pink flowers. Use them in mass plantings at twelve inches apart for best results.

Wax begonias (Begonia x semperflorens-cultorumare) another good choice for summer gardens. They are tough and extremely durable. You can find both green and bronze leafed varieties. They are low growing at six to twelve inches tall and could be considered a groundcover. Look for a part sun/ part shade location for the best results. However, the bronze leafed varieties can handle more sun than the green leaf types.

Angel Wing or cane begonias are easy to grow plants that provide interesting foliage shapes and colors. They get their name because of their long, jointed stems that resemble bamboo. Theses begonias can get quite tall. If left alone, they can reach heights of over three feet. It is recommended to keep them pruned below three feet to create a fuller, bushier plant. Get out to your local garden center to see what other begonia varieties are available to you.

Team Up To Eat Healthier

COOKING for SINGLES & COUPLES

As couples age, eating habits change. Unencumbered by children, couples have the opportunity to experiment with higher cost ingredients which usually means healthier dining. But there is another side to this metric: weight gain. Now, I’m not trying to muscle in on Carolyn Henehgan’s diet columns, but if you are part of a duo controlling your weight, it can be much easier to maintain and reach your goals. By teaming up, there is a satisfaction knowing there is someone close to you who is in a similar state. Your paths may not be concurrent but the goal is the same.

By charting out your weight control journey together, you can help each other with the elements that cause weakness for either one of you. Both you and your partner should do extensive food-related research in tandem for goal-setting. What’s bad for you may not be bad for your partner and knowing each of you will have temptation for the other in the pantry beforehand will make controlling that impulse to cross back to the other side much easier.

Let’s look at some steps you two can take to make your dining healthier and more fun with less stress.

Switch to a healthy breakfast. If you are eating breakfast with your partner, try to set an example by switching to choices like low sugar cereals, or milk and nuts. Healthy alternatives are not always unappetizing and by making a change yourself, you are more likely to push your partner into eating healthy as well. Vegetarian recipes and choices abound and the egg remains your friend.

Set an exercise regimen. Exercise can be a routine chore, but when you have your partner to exercise with, it may not seem as boring. Hit the gym together or work towards picking up some athletic activities like hiking, cycling, camping, or simply enjoying a walk together at the end of the day.

Regular exercise will condition your appetite to be fulfilled for organic, not mood or social reasons, which usually means much healthier choices of foods, portions and dining atmosphere.

Dining Atmosphere. It seems only Americans eat on the run. No one can truly maintain healthy eating habits without the slower pace and social interaction of a partner or familial unit. In Greece and Cyprus, the term is “siga, siga” and the one common theme most of the world embraces with dining is “take your time.”. So take yours. When eating out, order a child-sized entree instead of a regular entree to cut calories and keep your portions reasonable. Restaurants are aware of this lifestyle change and there are plenty of establishments that offer delicious low-calorie, low-fat choices on their menus.

Healthy munching: Find a healthy snack both you and your partner would love to munch on. Substitute regular potato chips with low-fat, baked versions, or whole grain tortillas. Try eating healthy snacks like baggies of pre-sliced fruits and veggies whenever either of you has a craving. And munch “siga, siga!”

Grocery shopping. Shopping for groceries can play a major role in a couple’s weight control program. When you take your partner along for grocery shopping, both of you can mutually decide on healthy, low-calorie food options.

Drink water and herbal tea: For a couple’s successful health plan, it is important to get rid of aerated soft drinks. Whenever either of you is thirsty, try drinking flavored sparkling water or herbal tea which is available in several flavors like organic green, chamomile, lemon, mint, etc.

Slidell Shakes Up Its Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day Parades for 2018

Plan your 2018 parade schedule with these changes in mind and better yet - consider becoming a member of a riding krewe, like Titans, Perseus or Dionysius or Mona Lisa and Moon Pie, And there’s always The sentiments against having night parades in Slidell are apparently a thing of the past. Beginning room in the St .Patrick Day krewes as well.

33 years ago with the family oriented walking parade, Mona Lisa and Moon Pie marching on a prime Saturday night, Slidell added Selene in 1998 to parade on the Friday night before Mardi Gras and a couple of years ago added Titans on a Saturday night. Next year, the city’s newest krewe, Poseidon, has successfully petitioned for a Saturday night as well, again freeing up Saturday daytime hours for businesses to stay open without the interference of a Mardi Gras parade during the day. Thee’s only one problem with that. A shorter Mardi Gras season, like the one coming next year on February 13th, forces the crews to parade in colder weather. Mona Lisa and Moon Pie was rescheduled to parade the first weekend of the Mardi Gras season in January - the 13th to be exact. Not only does that force this krewe to walk during the dead of winter, it also forces the city of Slidell to set up barricades and clean up after the parade for just this one parade. Besides, it’ s too close to the holidays for a lot of folks, who already are “partied out” and broke from Christmas and New Years.

However, the problem has been solved. The Krewe of Mona Lisa and Moon Pie has moved its parade out of the Mardi Gras season and into the late winter weekend of St. Patrick’s Day. Mona Lisa never really was a Mardi Gras krewe; it just made sense to lump them into the four or five week season in January through early March. Now the parade will come the Saturday night

before the St. Patrick’s Day parade, which will always be scheduled the second Sunday of March,

It’s sorta like getting dessert before the main course, since Mona Lisa throws pies and St Patrick

parades throw vegetables. It also combines barricade and cleanup duties to that one weekend.

The weather is nicer. And the two best family parades will take place during the same weekend, when the weather is warmer and darkness comes later, allowing people to enjoy the pre-parade in daylight.

Since Mona Lisa has moved, the krewe has also made some changes in its operation. The first one is the development of a signature float, one that will be lighted and large, perhaps propelled by man, perhaps by machine. Its design, size and other particulars are being worked out this spring and summer by a small group of schemers, including yours truly, who want to see a little more pizazz in the celebration. This float will have the ability to shoot moon pies into the crowd. We haven’t named the float but Moonshot is a distinct possibility. Yes, moon pies can be safely and securely shot into a crowd with no damage to either the pie or the person. In fact, this concept has already been field tested by the manufacturer of the device that will propel the pies (and perhaps a signature Mona Lisa item to help the moon pies along their journey).

Since Mona Lisa has the only flambeau outside of a couple of traditional New Orleans parades, the krewe will extend its torch-bearing memberships to women (which has already happened but has not been well-publicized) and to youngsters between the ages of ten and fourteen. These junior flambeau will be known as Flim-Flams and will not carry live torches but faux torches with LED lighting instead. The krewe wants to see more family participation by offering more options
