Fall Themed Combination Planters

With the first official day of fall finally here, we can now see an end to this summer time heatwave. A cooling off period will get any gardener out of the house and into his/her favorite pair of gloves to start digging away. Gardeners with small spaces may find container gardening an easy way to utilize the small areas they have available to display the wonders of their green thumbs. This may include window boxes, a collection of pots, or a couple of hanging baskets. No matter what style of containers you use, you can fill them with several plants that fit well with this time of year. To start WILL AFTON with, chrysanthemums are one of the most popular plants currently available at the garden center this time of year. You can find them in many colors including red, yellow, white, and purple. Marigolds are another popular choice because they bloom in the colors of fall: red, orange, and yellow. Crotons will also be widely available. I originally saw crotons used as house plants but more recently I have seen them being used in plantings. They can really add some contrast in texture to your container. Mix up growing habits to add some eye catching interest. Tall upright plants like snapdragon, ornamental grasses, and giant liriope can be used in the middle to add height. Low growing spreading plants like ivy, petunia, and calibrachoa can be used to spill over the side. Get out there and see what kind of combination you can come up with. And if you really don’t think you are creative remember that you can always set out a few pumpkins and gourds to set the mood.

Azalea Lace Bugs The Azalea Lace Bug, Stephanitis pyrioides, is making its presence all across south Louisiana this time of year. For the most part, azalea lace bugs only cause aesthetic problems but in abundance they can be an added stress for plants. Usually the azalea leaves will become silvery or speckled due to loss of chlorophyll. This is due to the fact that lace bugs have piercing sucking mouth parts.

They tend to feed on the undersides of leaves sucking out the sugars made through photosynthesis.

This is where the speckled appearance comes from. Azaleas are evergreen shrubs, meaning they do not drop all of their leaves at the end of the season. Those older, mature leaves will retain the damage during the winter. Do not prune them now, wait until after they bloom next year. The lace bugs overwinter on azalea leaves in the egg stage. These eggs will soon hatch and start their lifecycle to repeat the whole process over again. Repeated applications of neem oil, insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils or pyrethrin based insecticides may be used. These options have relatively low toxicities to people and pets and lower adverse effects on beneficial insects and pollinators.

These sprays need to be directed at the underside of the leaves for best for optimal control.

Season long control can be attained by using a systemic insecticide. Look for products containing imidacloprid or acephate. Always be sure to read and follow label instructions before applying insecticides. This includes not only using the correct protection equipment but also using the correct rate of product.

EXCESSIVE MILES ON LSU FOOTBALL VEHICLE TRIGGERS RECALL, REMOVAL

Somewhere in Tyler, Texas, former LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee wears a whimsical smile. In his Defensive Coordinator’s office in College Station, Texas, former defensive coordinator for LSU, John “Chief” Chavis” is having a belly laugh. On college campuses around the country, nearly two dozen former LSU Tiger players are saying to themselves “it’s about time.” It’s always been about time with Les Miles, who, today, finds himself an unemployed millionaire, drying undeserved tears after a fed-up administration and a couple of well-heeled donors allegedly combined to pull the plug on Miles and his Wingman/Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron. The fallout begins with Ed Orgeron, who will never win a public speaking gig, leading the Tigers through the remaining two-thirds of the season. But Orgeron, who at one time was no fan of LSU, can be understood without a translator, which is more than you could say about Miles. And Orgeron has real fire and passion, not the namby-pamby garbage spouted by Miles, who never ever took responsibility for his screw-ups. Not publicly and not with any sense of conviction. And now he’s been convicted and sentenced to munch the grass in his own back yard exclusively.

Exit Les Miles. Recruiter extraordinaire. Easy-going, likable. Making promises he’d like to keep, but can’t. Because he’s eaten up with the Bo Schembechler Disease. He’s the only one who has it this bad. Present Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has a case of it but it’s not the debilitating malady that defines Les Miles. Miles successfully navigated the financial jungle of major college sports income because he found assistant coaches who provide him enough success to hold on to a job he should have lost several years ago. His quotations fill joke books.

His inspirational talks would almost fill a thimble. His ability to innovate and think on the fly is the worst among the major college coaches. He is the leading example of the Peter Principal.

Look up “stubborn” in a modern dictionary. You’ll see a picture of Les Miles. This man flat out lied about changing the offense at LSU this year and 4.35 million dollars is a lot to pay a liar. Miles thought he was bulletproof when the administration cratered last November and rescinded the coach’s departure then. The November payout to Miles and his minions wouldn’t have been much more than the September payout this year but by not pulling the trigger at the end of last season, the program lost another chance of being really special and making the changes necessary to challenge Alabama for the top dog spot in the country this year. The money should have been paid then. Another mess created by the boys and girls in the LSU ivory tower. LSU could go 10 and 2 this year on the emotion of its interim head coach and the weight of the disco era football mindset being removed quickly. But they’ll have to act and think really fast. And forget Miles, the man who would be Bo…er, King.

Now the midnight hour has struck. The real midnight hour. Not the gutless Joe Alleva/Board of Supervisors scenario from last November. The real McCoy. And this time, they weren’t coy about it. Les Miles does not have the temperament, skill sets or communication propensity to continue making more than 4 million dollars per year and to sound like Forrest Gump…and coach like him. Eleven years of cutesy, grass-chewing, doofus-acting public appearances is more than enough. More players have left the LSU program in the past six years than in the previous 30 years combined. Mostly because of broken promises. Or outright lies. Or toxic coaching environments. “Chief” John Chavis has finally built a defense at Texas A&M that would have more than embarrassed the Tigers in November if Miles had stayed. Chavis was thrown under the bus in Baton Rouge. The LSU program continued to do insane things this season, like the same unsuccessful play calling and personnel decisions that have gone on for most of Miles’ time in Baton Rouge. Time? Miles doesn’t know the meaning of time. It began on a 2005 Monday night in Baton Rouge…Miles first game at home…when a 21-0 halftime lead evaporated in the second half and Tennessee won the game in overtime, 30 to 27. Tennessee led in total yards, plays run and time of possession. Sound familiar? Six starters on the LSU offense from that team went on to play in the NFL. Fast forward to this season. No points in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State, a team on the rebuild without any true offensive stars. The Bulldogs would have only needed a couple of more minutes on September 17th to beat the Tigers after the Tigers put their attitude on cruise control and got the usual second half sloppies. No points in the fourth quarter against Auburn in an embarrassing offensive showing once again, despite the presence of a quarterback who could make a difference if the coaching staff would let him make a difference. But inconsistent receiver play and the fear of throwing over the middle still has the LSU offense off-balance.

Especially Danny Etling, who’s the closest thing to Matt Flynn we’re seen in Tiger Stadium in a long time. Not a great arm but a great attitude and desire. But not enough input from Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron to do more. Because more was up to Les. And Les is not short for Lester, but for Less, like less confidence, less imagination, less daring…you get the picture. Less wins, less championships, less enjoyment. Glad Les “enjoyed” his team in its various modes.

The fan base doesn’t enjoy coming in second. And now they have a chance to secure an optimist and a realist - a coach who sounds like he gives a damn. The administration’s move headed off a mass exodus from Tiger Stadium this fall had Miles stayed. I predicted less than 70,000 would have attended the Missouri game Saturday and by early November, prime parking spaces for the Alabama game would have been snapped up….by ‘Bama fans. The Tiger fan egress from Tiger Stadium would have looked like the refugee flow from Syria.

Will the Tigers actually score in the fourth quarter this year? You bet! You couldn’t blame it all on the players because the qualities of ability and coachability are there. What hasn’t been there is a sense of purpose, a sense of urgency, a sense of leadership, a sense of “the next man (Continued on Page 7)

It wasn’t long ago that Tiger AD Joe Alleva said the program had to compete with television. Adding a high-end enclave for the well-heeled in the South Upper regions was not what was needed and the interior of the stadium today looks the same as it did in the 1970’s. That’s where 85% of the Tiger Faithful walk each game, to buy their overpriced concessions from outdated stands and use the outdated and undersized restrooms. Unfortunately, the program on the field was also stuck in the ’70’s. 102,000-plus seats are hard to fill with an inferior product, an inferior attitude and an inferior coach. And an inferior athletic department structure. Now some of that inferiority will be replaced with a sense of pride, opportunity and achievement.

Who will succeed Les Miles? if we are lucky enough to secure a Tom Herman-type coach, for mercy sakes, allow the media to question him without the bulldog presence of Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette in the room. Or if it’s not so much Bonnette, then get some writers who will question LSU and write about them like they write about the Saints. It’s all big-dollar sports and if you are worried about access to the program, you or your sports outlet need to rethink your role in covering the Tigers. This program needs more Ron Higgins covering it and fewer Gordy Rushes. Cojones, anyone?
