Tony’s Takes TIGERS MATURITY STARTING TO DEVELOP AT RIGHT TIME - BUT THEY STILL HAVE A WAYS TO GO The last part of this story was written after the Auburn game. After the Tech meltdown, I believe these Tigers need to be placed outside of the top ten until they can show that they can put teams away. A well-known New Orleans sportscaster and I disagreed about the Tigers Saturday evening. He said the offensive line - missing all starters from August except at center - was a legitimate reason for the Tigers to fade in the latter part of the game. I asked him ‘what about the defense?’ and there was no answer.

The LSU psyche has to change before they can truly use their superior recruiting advantages in this state to catch and perhaps exceed Alabama’s performances But the Tide uses discipline, will, pride, technique and accountability to stay the course - Nick Saban’s famous “Process” ingredients. Perhaps the happiest news is in the special team play, where every aspect has been nearly perfect. That should be the biggest game of the year in America if form holds true as the Tigers play a tougher schedule than either Clemson, Ohio State or Oklahoma do in the same time period. If the Tigers win then, they must guard against a trap game with Mississippi State. A win there puts the first weekend of November into the 2011 class and we know what happened that night. What the Tigers need to heed is the fact that even Alabama is beatable more than once in a season. They might get the chance to prove it early next year and find redemption for the 2011 squad.

AZALEA LACE BUGS The Azalea Lace Bug, Stephanitis pyrioides, is currently making its presence known across south Louisiana. . For the most part, azalea lace bugs only cause aesthetic problems but in abundance they can be an added stress for plants. Usually the azalea leaves will become silvery or speckled due to loss of chlorophyll. This is due to the fact that lace bugs have piercing sucking mouth parts. They tend to feed on the undersides of leaves sucking out the sugars made through photosynthesis. This is where the speckled appearance comes from. Azaleas are evergreen Will Afton shrubs, meaning they do not drop all of their leaves at the end of the season. Those older, mature leaves will retain the damage during the winter. Do not prune them now, wait until after they bloom next year. The lace bugs overwinter on azalea leaves in the egg stage. These eggs will soon hatch and start their lifecycle to repeat the whole process over again. Repeated applications of neem oil, insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils or pyrethrin based insecticides may be used. These options have relatively low toxicities to people and pets and lower adverse effects on beneficial insects and pollinators. These sprays need to be directed at the underside of the leaves for best for optimal control. Achieve season long control by using a systemic insecticide. Look for products containing imidacloprid or acephate. Always be sure to read and follow label instructions before applying insecticides. This includes not only using the correct protection equipment but also using the correct rate of product.

Most people, when they think of camellias, imagine the large rose like blooms of the old garden camellias, Camellia japonica, that show dominance in the landscape during late winter and early spring. However, there are several other species of camellia that are grown in landscapes across the country. A very common species grown in Louisiana is the C. sasanqua but we just call them sasanquas. They are evergreen flowering shrubs that range in heights and have different growing habits. Like old garden camellias, sasanquas prefer a partial shade location but they will grow in full sun. They prefer a well-drained acidic soil somewhere between a pH of 5.5 and 6.5 similar to other well-known southern shrubs like azaleas and gardenias.

Sasanquas have a few pest problems that are fairly easy to control if identified early and appropriate control measures are taken. As with most evergreen plants, scale insects can show up from time to time. These insects have sucking type mouthparts and can be found feeding on the undersides of leaves. Most gardeners will typically see black sooty mold growing on the tops of leaves. This is due to the fact that as the scale insects feed they drop “honey dew” onto the leave leaves below. The black sooty mold will then grow on these honey dew covered surfaces. Control using a systemic insecticide in combination with a few applications of horticultural oil to keep your camellia free and clear of these problems. Root rot caused by a pathogen named phytopthera can also be an issue. The best way to prevent this problem is to choose a well-drained location for your new planting and to avoid excessive irrigation.

Because of their popularity and stamina in Louisiana landscapes, you will find many different cultivars for sale at garden centers and plant nurseries. Some of the tallest growing cultivars can reach heights near fifteen tall. The cultivar ‘Alabama Beauty’ is one of the earliest bloomers and has beautiful rosey-red flowers. ‘Pink Snow’ is another larger growing cultivar but it produces lovely soft pink flowers. The ‘Leslie Ann’ cultivar has been promoted as a Louisiana Super Plant due to its outstanding performance and it produces a flower with white petals and pink edges.

‘Setsugekka’ is another taller growing cultivar but it produces a pure flower. For those looking for a smaller growing option look at ‘Stephanie Golden’. It produces a hot pink flower and stays around five to six feet tall to satisfy those smaller spaces. These are not the only choices you will see. Make sure to get out to your local garden center to see what is available in your area.
