What’s Happening Pearl River?

Fall is coming and we know what that means here in Pearl River, Football!!! Our Rebels are off to a fantastic start this season. Starting with the Jamboree, our Pearl River Rebels won against the Northshore Panthers 28-21, followed by our Jr. Varsity game last Wednesday against Pope John Paul where our Rebel J.V. team won 14-8. Our Rebels Varsity also won Friday night in our Rebel Vs Pope game with a score of 40-2. Gooooo Rebels 3-0!! Keep up the good work guys! While we are speaking of great things at PRHS, I would like to brag for just a bit on our awesome Cafeteria. Many of you may not know that Pearl River High applied for the No Kid Hungry Grant which is received by implementing a Breakfast after the bell meal. This provides a quick breakfast for students that may not have time for the lunchroom breakfast or students that get to school just after the bell is ringing. PRHS was approved for the grant and received $1,770.00 to purchase a “grab and go” cart and many items needed to keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.

This “grab and go” breakfast is served daily in the mall area at the front entrance where students enter each day from the car and bus ramp. Cafeteria Manager Michelle Penton spoke to me about this awesome program saying, “We are very excited to be able to provide meals for breakfast of which some students may not have received if we did not have these accommodations.” Thank you, Mrs. Penton, for helping to get this grant program for the students at PRHS. Outstanding job! Thank you, to you and the ladies in our PRHS cafeteria that work so hard each and everyday with a smile!

All this talk about good food reminds me, we have two new restaurants that are opening in two very well known locations in our town. First, we have Yum Yums Café. They are now opened for business, located in the old Roux 41 spot at 64167 Hwy. 41. I was able to eat there last week for the first time but it will not be my last. Yum Yums Café is just as it sounds and then some, YUM YUMMMMM! Their menu includes, homestyle, Italian, seafood, po-boy’s, BBQ and more. This family owned business has 40 years of restaurant experience and makes everything from scratch, you will find no frozen foods at this establishment. A little side note, if you loved Bonnie C’s in Slidell a few years back, then you will also love Yum Yum’s Café’ now. Yum Yum’s Café used to own Bonnie C’s. Make sure to check out Yum Yum’s Café on facebook for their hours of operation, daily specials and more. From what I hear, breakfast will also be coming there real soon.

If you love homestyle cooking, then you will also love the second restaurant opening soon in town. Two Blessed Sisters is moving into town. They will be located at everyone’s favorite place, the old Mama’s Kitchen building. Mrs. Renee, which was one of Mama’s Kitchens original cooks, will be once again back in her Kitchen. YAY!! I would like to personally add that no one makes a burger like Renee’s burgers in my opinion. They have not set a date for opening as of yet but when I reached out to them they said they will be opening real soon and they will make sure to announce the opening on their facebook page.

The Pearl River Annual Swamp Fest will be held September 14th in front of the Town Hall this year. This years line up will consist of a variety of Bands playing. There will be food and game booths, a pumpkin patch, rubber Duck race, Car show and more. Our school clubs and non-profit organizations will be serving food and drinks. Our Lions club will be selling cold beer. Admission into this oneday event will be $5, children 12 and under are free. Don’t forget to bring your chairs, blankets and pop up tents for shade.

IN DEFENSE OF DREW BREES By: Jeff Crouere In New Orleans, people enjoy Mardi Gras, politics, good food and great festivals, but nothing compares to the fervor that is directed toward their professional football team, the Saints.

It has been a love affair ever since the team played their first game in Tulane Stadium in 1967.

For many years, the team was the laughingstock of the league, but the fans did not desert the Saints. Their loyalty was rewarded in 2000 when, the Saints, after 33 years of futility, finally won their first playoff game.

Unfortunately, just five years later, the future of the Saints was uncertain. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, there was a legitimate concern that the team would not return to New Orleans. Fortunately, after pressure from the NFL and a commitment to rebuild the Louisiana Superdome, Saints owner Tom Benson returned the team to New Orleans in 2006.

This was the first year for new Head Coach Sean Payton and new star quarterback Drew Brees.

The positive results were immediate, and the Saints reached the NFL Championship game in the first year of the new regime. A mere three years later, the Saints did the unthinkable, winning their first and only Super Bowl.

The man most responsible for this incredible victory was Drew Brees. Upon his arrival in New Orleans, he helped instill a new winning attitude among his teammates with his extraordinary work ethic and his impeccable preparation for each game. It is a major reason why he will be a member of the NFL Hall of Fame when he retires and will own most of the major all-time quarterback records. Drew Brees is not only the best player on the Saints, he is also quite possibly the best player in the NFL.

Tony’s Takes WITH APOLOGIES TO THE MONKEYS… I’M A BELIEVER! Before my first trip to Baton Rouge and Tiger Stadium this season, I would have quoted the title of another Monkeys song from the late ’60’s….”Last Train To Clarksville”. Except Clarksville would have been a mythical town where college quarterbacks and RPO offenses thrived. It would have been a vacation stop for the LSU offensive mind trust, because under Les Miles and the original Ed Orgeron, LSU’s offense wouldn’t have been accepted into the neighborhood as residents.

My previous column was entitled ‘I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT’. I still have trouble believing that LSU could THROW 14 passes in a game, let alone COMPLETE PASSES TO 14 DIFFERENT PLAYERS, INCLUDING 5 BACKS AND TWO TIGHT ENDS!! And that was without really dusting off the covers of a true RPO offense, as only a few times did the quarterback actually run the option portion of the play.

Don’t bother looking up the records for those figures cited above; they are records. The Saints Drew Brees doesn’t complete passes to 14 different players in a game. But Joe Burrow did. And even Miles Brennan looked like he could perform similar feats if he was taking snaps from a veteran center and could convince himself to read the field in less than five seconds.

I wrote this portion of this column the Thursday before the Texas Longhorn game in Austin. i am confident the Tigers will take care of business against those burnt orange players and leave little doubt they are the superior team.

Part 2 - LSU’s OFFENSE IS FOR REAL, DEFENSE, CONDITIONING TAKE BACKWARDS STEP For 13 years, he has unquestionably been the team leader and a great role model for young fans.

Instead of directly criticizing bringing Bibles to school, it was convenient to drag Brees into a controversy involving some of the other initiatives of Focus on the Family.

The entire episode is a reminder why many athletes and movie stars do not express their conservative religious or political views. It opens them up to the type of attacks that Drew Brees unfairly received this week.

Hopefully the weather will cool off soon as the days will get shorter approaching the latter half of the year. Now is about the time of year where plant nurseries and garden centers start bringing in new varieties of plants and flowers. Fall is for the planting cultivating cool season flowers and you will start seeing them now if you haven’t already.

Chrysanthemums are some of the most popular flowers during this time of year. Soon there will be row after row of different varieties of “mums”. Sometimes the vast collections of different mum varieties Will Afton can be overwhelming. Popularity is the main reason you see so many different selections. Plant breeders are always on the lookout for new variations of popular plant. Chrysanthemums can be dated back to 15th century BC in China. In the late 18th century AD they were introduced to the United States and have been a favorite ever since.

Mums are relatively easy to grow and have minimal pest issues. Several leaf spots are known to occur on chrysanthemum including Septoria, Altenaria, and Cercospora. These are controlled by hand removing infected foliage and treating with an appropriately labeled fungicide. Aphids and spider mites are two of the more important insect pest of chrysanthemum. Both can be easily controlled using horticultural oil sprays when detected early. Make sure to observe and inspect plants in the landscape and garden. Insect outbreaks are much easier to handle if detected early in the process. In addition, fertilization and supplemental irrigation will produce healthy plants.

That, coupled with giving plants the proper amount of space to grow is the best way to prevent most insect and disease problems.

One series of chrysanthemum to check out this season is the Belgium Mum® group. These selections are bred for their growth habit, flower count and branch flexibility. Belgium Mums display a very nice mounding growth habit, numerous flowers and strong branching to help protect the plant’s shape. Some of the stand outs from this series include Cesaro (a gorgeous golden yellow), Viviana Yellow (a very bright yellow), Conaco Orange (a large flowered, orange color), Pobo Lavender (a dark lavender color) and Amiko Bronze (a reddish colored bronze).

Check to see what new varieties and cultivars your local garden center will carry this season.

Also, remember when picking out mum plants look for ones that are starting to show a little color so that you can verify the plant tag but not too much. By choosing plants that have not fully opened their blooms, you are increasing the amount of time they are in bloom in your garden. Be careful when handling your mum plants as you get them home. The stems and branches of chrysanthemums are known to be very brittle. Most wholesale growers use plastic cages to help protect the plants during shipment. Keep this in mind as you load up on chrysanthemums this fall season.
