Photograph by Infrogmation The location of this cemetery, on Canal Street spanning to Banks Street, is in close proximity to Cypress Grove and St. Patrick Cemeteries. It is no longer easy to view from Canal, however, due to the addition of an oil station and large flower shop that have been built in front of it. This graveyard houses thousands of the indigent dead who died in Charity Hospital. In the span of four days in September of 1847, Charity Hospital Cemetery obtained the corpses of 87 persons, the main cause of death being yellow fever. When the new Charity Hospital was constructed in 1937, earth from the digging for foundations was transported to the hospital cemetery, allowing the level of the land to be raised several feet. This allowed to graves to be safe from flooding.

The Katrina Memorial was built on the site of this hospital in 2007.

LAMBEAU FIELD…HERE WE COME!

A pleasant surprise arrived at my home last week when two tickets for the LSU/Wisconsin football game sat on my doorstep. These tickets are not the usual seats associated with applying for and receiving away game selections in the SEC. Years of nosebleed seats, perilous views, and heartchallenging hikes for food, drink and restroom comforts had my wife lay down the law about where we would sit if we ever went back on the road with the Tigers (hate the upper deck, love Athens, Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Auburn, Knoxville, Fayetteville and Oxford). Going to Green Bay, Wisconsin in early September… no snow, but it will be a pilgrimage to a holy sports destination: Titletown, USA. It was with much trepidation that I applied for these seats in the spring. After all, it was a game scheduled for one of the four or five most iconic football stadiums in America…LAM…BEAU…FIELD!! Now Lambeau in September won’t have the same cachet that it has in late November or December. We’re not even sure if any of the college players will attempt a Lambeau Leap into the end zone following a touchdown. If they do, our seats are close enough that we might be able to pat the player on the head or shoulder pads after they land.

Our seats are in the lower bowl, the original stadium footprint at Lambeau and they are only eleven rows from the field. Normally that’s too close for me to enjoy watching a game in person but with no player bench or personnel in front of us, these seats in the northeast end zone should be great.

Cheaper than seats to Texas A&M or Alabama at virtually any price, these ducats would usually sell for $150-$300 each or much higher for a demand game (think: $600 each for similar tickets to Bryant Denny Stadium five years ago for the classic Alabama/LSU undefeated showdown). The school offered these Wisconsin seats for under $100 each. Plus it’s Green Bay. It’s not crowded, it’s not on the way to anywhere. Parking prices for the game are high but not for what SEC fans are subject to and the town allows parking in numerous lots and in the yards and driveways of private homes. 40,000 tickets were issued to Wisconsin Badger fans, 20,000 to LSU and 20,000 plus were retained by the Packers. My guess is another 10-15,000 of those Wisconsin and Green Bay tickets will wind up with a Purple and Gold occupant. Add the usual number of tag-a-longs for an LSU road trip that won’t have tickets and Green Bay can expect the biggest visiting team crowd in its 59-year history.

It’s about 1,050 miles from Slidell to Green Bay, a tad shorter than a trip to Omaha for the College World Series. Like Omaha, Tiger fans should be very welcome in Green Bay, where former Tiger Jimmy Taylor was an integral part of the Vince Lombardi dynasty of the 1960’s, when Lambeau Field’s reputation was forged in ice. But Green Bay’s hotel room situation is similar to Syracuse, where, as one native and colleague of mine succinctly put it “there’s really no reason to come to Syracuse” and because of that, the hotel and motel availability is subpar in quality and selection in both cities. At least there’s ten weekend reasons to go to Green Bay, every late summer, fall and early winter.

Many traveling Tiger fans will stay in Milwaukee and drive the three hours north to Green Bay. My wife and I will be staying at a bed and breakfast in Oshkosh, about 50 miles away, an easy 45 minute drive through Appleton and then into Packer Land. Now Oshkosh is one of those towns in a state where Indian names abound. In fact, Wisconsin has a wonderful blend of Native American and French names: Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Manitowoc, Beloit, Nekoosa, Prairie du Sac, De Pere’, Kenosha…in fact, any “K” or “W” word with a Native American flavor seems to come out of Wisconsin. What’s in Oshkosh? Oshkosh, by gosh!

It’s on the Fox River which empties into Lake Winnebago, less than a mile from the bed and breakfast. It’s got an opera house, a campus of the University of Wisconsin and some really friendly folks who, you betcha, have, once, a real ‘ting for being, don’t ya know, friendly. More than once. Wow! Where did that come from? It came from a column I did back in February of last year when a tall German Wisconsin ad man named Joe Mathes visited the weekend before Mardi Gras. At the time, I compared the Wisconsin accent to a blend of Fargo, Chicago, Canada and Minnesota.

Ever think that your lawn has had had enough? It seems as though that our Southern turfgrasses have enough to deal with. From the installation phase to the maintenance phase, it feels as though we are always fighting off one of mother nature’s monsters while defending what we think ought to be a right, a green and healthy looking lawn. Well, one of those monsters that rears its ugly head during the summer months in South Louisiana is that of the tropical sod webworm, Herpetogramm spp. With an affinity for st. agustinegrass Will Afton and carpetgrass, the tropical sod webworm, feeds its vengeance on the young tender grass shoots. The larvae feed on grass foliage, as opposed to fungal diseases that tend to reveal dead and rotting pieces of leaves and stems. The worms that cause this damage will show signs of silk-like webbing in the early morning hours as dew covers the ground. Have you ever noticed this? Well, one thing that you might see is the adult moths that fly about as you walk through the lawn. These moths in themselves can be a pestilence to those who use the lawn regularly. To correctly identify tropical sod webworms, look for evidence of chewed grass blades and holes in the grass blades. To further inspect the area, drench it with a solution of lemon scented dish washing soap and water. This mixture, when poured over an area infested by sod webworms will cause the worms to come to the surface for easy identification. The worms themselves are actually small to the naked eye. Older stage juveniles are less than an inch long. They will appear green in color, all depending on the amount of feeding done in our in your lawn. Once identified, they are somewhat easily controlled. If you happen to find these pests in your lawn area then look to use products like Bt (Bacilius thuringiensis) or spinosad. Both of these products are listed on the Organic Material Research Institute’s (OMRI) list of approved pesticide. For a more conventional approach, look to use a product containing the active ingredient carbaryl. Be sure to read and follow all label instructions on any pesticide product.

Summertime Flower Options When thinking about summer flowers in South Louisiana, it’s not hard to recall the beautiful yet resilient forms of Zinnia. The zinnia plant originated somewhere in Southwest America and Central Mexico. In South Louisiana, the zinnia is a broad statement when it comes to summer flowering and the long days of summer. These flowering plants will last from spring to fall in most landscape settings. They are easily distinguished by their daisy like flowers that perform best from June until September. The ‘Dreamland’ series of zinnia features large heads over 3 inches wide and come in shapes of red, pink, and yellow with a mix variety option available.

These plants perform well in full sun locations where they are occasionally used as cut flowers. The ‘Profusion’ series of zinnia flower has become quite popular amongst growers as of late because of its smaller form yet similar flowering habit. There are a few options to choose from. Look for Red, Purple, Pink, Salmon, Yellow, and White selections. ‘Zahara’ zinnias are similar in appearance to the ‘Profusion’ but have a slightly larger flower and come in even more color options. If you looking for a variety to plant in the garden in order to have fresh garden flowers from time to time look at the ‘Benary’s Giant’ series of zinnia. They produce large 3 to 4 inch flowers on long stems. With a maximum height of almost 3 feet tall, these zinnias can also be used in the back of bed to add some bright colors. Whatever your need is zinnias are excellent choices for South Louisiana. Get out to the garden center to see what varieties are available to you.

Several tragic situations struck Louisiana this past week. The worst and most far-reaching was the massive flooding and record river crests in St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Livingston and East Baton Rouge parishes. Several people lost their lives as heretofore unflooded areas were hit with up to five feet or more of river and rainwater. As much as 27 inches of rain fell in a 48hour period, the most short term rainfall in the state since the 31 inches recorded in 2000 in St. Tammany parish and the 20-something inches that fell in the same area in the spring of 1995.

Hey, that doesn’t apply to Oshkosh, where the “O” is more like an “A”. What’s up with that? Ask the Slovaks, Scandinavians and Germans when you get up there.

This will be the first major college football game at Lambeau. Nearby St. Norbert College has won three times at Lambeau, twice against Fordham and once against Mankato State, the last St. Norbert/Fordham matchup coming in 1983. The Fordham connection has an important link to Green Bay football.

According to Richard Ryman of the Green Bay Press Gazette, about 300 homeowners on all sides of Lambeau Field rent out their lawns, back yards and driveways for the games. Ryan says 85% of the people who attend Packer games are from 50 miles or further, such as Chicago, Milwaukee, the rest of Wisconsin and even Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan. That’s about 4,500 vehicles at 15 cars per home or upwards of 10,000 to 18,000 spectators and includes visiting fans from the other team, who, according to Ryman, usually constitute less than 10% of Lambeau’s 80,000 plus seats. Ryman says the only “semi nosebleed” seats are in the relatively new south end zone and even those are viewer friendly in comfort and accessibility. These numbers will not be accurate for the LSU/Wisconsin game, where estimates in Green Bay indicate there may be as many fans outside the 80,000+ capacity Lambeau Field as will be inside for the game. Hey, its the gold standard for sports nostalgia wrapped in a 59-year old building and its on most sports fans’ bucket lists.

Like most non-SEC venues, the Wisconsinites will be overwhelmed by the Coonass Nation that will swarm their small town with upwards of 40,000 tailgaters. Brats and cheese will be exchanged for shrimp and boudin and beer will be the common denominator. Good things will be said about Kiln, Mississippi native Brett Favre and confused Badger fans will inquire about former head coach Bert Bielema now at Arkansas and David Aranda, now the defensive coordinator at LSU after holding that position in Madison for the previous three years. But it will all be good. The Tigers will eke out a close win with the confounding defense of Aranda’s and the pounding legs of Leonard Fournette, Slidell’s most famous current athlete. Wisconsin fans will sing “On, Wisconsin”, one of the five greatest college fight songs in America and the Badgers will ask about our famous Badger…the Honey Badger, who, thankfully, they will not have to face in college but in the NFL, if Green Bay and Arizona meet at Lambeau…well, that’s a different story.

We would have enjoyed a trip to Camp Randall, the campy, party-loving site of most Wisconsin home games. It’s arguably the best site in the old Big Ten to watch a football game (sorry, Ohio State and Michigan) but Ohio and Michigan don’t have a Lambeau Field within hailing distance. Scratch off Lambeau on your bucket list if you have the chance to go to Wisconsin on Labor Day weekend this year. It will be a Labor Day of Love as the Badgers and Tigers claw it out at Lambeau and the Tigers take a Lambeau Leap into what could be a watershed season for both the team and their head coach.
