BLUE BLOODS, YELLOWSTONE ARE IMPORTANT SHOWS TO VIEW, ESPECIALLY IN THESE TIMES

Perhaps the finest police television series and one of the best shows ever produced is Blue Bloods. It features two outstanding male leads (Tom Sellick and Donny Wahlberg) and a well-thought out cast of supporting actors and actresses It’s been around for more than 10 years as we’ve watched one generation grow up on screen and the maturation of all cast members as views regarding policing in the United States evolved over the years.

The most important part of the series is the family dinner. In an era where few people sit down and eat together on a regular basis and with a certain decorum, the Reagan family of New York continues a multi-generational tradition, with four active generations sharing the table. Issues are discussed rather freely and voices of all family members are allowed access to any discussion.

What really separates the show, however, is the firm but loving discipline shown between all family members. Language is civil and never coarse; temperament kept to a minimum of extremes and understanding of each other’s positions valued and recognized. Above all, sense of family, values, fair play and love rule the day.

It’s an America we have been losing for years, yet is longed for by most of us. It is an America that we need, as a lack of civility and unfairness has permeated our society to the point that many of us are not sure what has happened to the common sense of our alleged leadership over issues that should not be controversial or divisive.

Much of this uncertainty will dissipate after the first Tuesday of November, whatever result takes place. But too much will remain and our national soul appears to be in danger. When folks don’t have discourse, the result is chaos. The dissolution of our family unit has been rather rapid and is being replaced with an artificial mix that does not necessarily give people a representative appearance of their true selves. Families unable to cope at all have become disfunctional, destructive and unloving. Others take on the patina of a social unit rather than a family council. Meanwhile, much backbone and sense of value has eroded as families come to terms with a rapidly changing American landscape.

The second show, Yellowstone, is a culmination of the career of Kevin Costner. Costner plays the no-nonsense patriarch of a seven-generation Montana ranching family, the Duttons. Unlike the Reagans, language is rough and family loyalty severely questioned and dealt with as this last-of a-generation household fights corporate greed and regional subplots to hold on to their acreage and more important, their way of life. Methods and politics are a combination of Old School, the Wild West and a sense of Mafia tradition. But faults….some very glaring….are either glossed over, confronted head-on or treated with love. It’s an unsettling scenario for those either weak of value, mind or body but it does deal in its positive moments with the disgust of the modern, soulless world of high finance and low moral and political character. No laugh track here, little tolerance for silliness or stupidity. As Americans, viewers finds themselves rooting for the Duttons, even with all their warts, as progressivism and political intrigue force their hands into what may be one of the most emotionally entertaining conclusions ever viewed on national television.

Both shows get one’s blood pumping for those who believe in the positive values our country was founded upon. We may disagree on dozens of issues and the best way to make changes to adjust those issues to better reflect our values, but without recognition of those primal values, we don’t really have a country anyway. And every system, every society, every “ism” has a set of primal values.

America has been able to make the most of the better values offered by newcomers over the years; that’s why the United States is still the go-to place for more people than any two or three other countries combined. if not, we wouldn’t need a set of borders and entrance requirements so we may vet those seeking our opportunity who promise to bring positives to the American spirit, not destruction, negatives or intimidation. Tony’s Take NEW NAME FOR NFL’S WASHINGTON TEAM COULD REFLECT CURRENT POLITICS The kerfuffle over the names of certain sports teams and groups of humans continues to confuse the hell out of me. For example: why is is unacceptable to call a team by the color of their skin (Redskins) if they are Native American but it’s not only okay but de rigueur to refer to a person once known as a Negro as Black? We don’t refer to certain Asians as “yellow” as in skin color but Caucasians are classified as White. I guess color only matters in sports if you are Native American and God knows about the rest of it. There are proud names of many Native American teams yet those names also face the wrath of people who have no skin in the game (no pun intended) but enjoy the activities of guilt and intimidation.

Since there are no rules today unless you are “outraged”, to use one of two words so overused and watered-down (the other is “awesome”) that they have little relevance to their original meanings, anything goes. So here goes. The Washington Reds. As in Communist Reds. A term that has’t been attacked so far. And why not? Washington has largely forgotten where they placed the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Articles of Confederation. Another name could be the Washington Marxists. Think of it. They could bowl over their competition in the name of diversity, fairness and social justice and no one would dare stop them. Better than The Hogs, whose advocacy group, Swine Are Fine, never could mount a campaign to remove this belittling term of porcine referral.

So…Reds it is. Like Cincinnati, where Communism is not exactly mainstream. But there is no conflict, since Cincinnati’s team is a baseball club whereas Washington is a football group.

One of the things you learn while working as an Extension Agent is that most of the landscape issues we encounter happen every year. Whether it be a disease problem, an insect problem, or even a plant availability problem, everything seems to have its time on the calendar. One of those issues that happens every summer is the appearance of webbing that covers trees trunks and limbs. Sometimes it’s only a small section and other times it may be the entire branch. Whatever the case, it is quite odd and can cause concern to the novice caretaker.

To make a long story short, there is no need to worry about this particular insect. We consider them beneficial in the grand scheme of things. These little creatures spend their entire life on the trunks of trees and shrubs. Most of the time they go unnoticed. That is until they produce a white, grey webbing that covers the bark. We refer to these insects as bark lice or tree cattle.

Bark lice are insects in the order Psocoptera and commonly referred to as psocids. They get the nickname because of their small size, like how some people call aphids plant lice. Others call them tree cattle because of the way they move together. If you look underneath the webbing, you can see small brown insects traveling up and down the bark of your tree. Bark lice nymphs appear dark gray with pale yellow bands between abdominal segments. The adults have shiny black wings that are held like a tent over their abdomens. The webbing itself does not cause any damage but merely provides protection from birds and other predators.

Bark lice do not harm the tree. They will feed on dead bark cells, fungi, algae and other debris growing on the tree trunk. In other words, they clean the trunks of trees. This in turn makes them a beneficial insect in the landscape.

Because of this beneficial nature, I do not recommend doing anything about it. Sometimes the webbing may be unsightly. If this is the case, then I would suggest using high water pressure to physically remove the webbing from the trunk. You could let them remain. In a couple of months, it will blend in well with the festivities of Halloween. Add a spooky feel to your landscape this year by leaving bark lice alone and they will help decorate your yard with cobwebs and silk!
