Pearl River is very thankful that Tropical Storm Barry did not visit us for long and that for the most part, was well behaved. Thank you to the Red Cross for showing up in our area, ready and willing to help if needed. I would like to take a moment to brag on our awesome community. A Big Shout out to our very own PRHS Principal Mr. John Priola, Maintenance/Custodian Earnest Penton and Cafeteria Manager Michelle Penton. While visiting our local Red Cross shelter last week, I was able to witness them welcome Red Cross volunteers from across the United States to PR with an abundance of southern charm and hospitality! We are very fortunate to have these wonderful people as role models to our students at PRHS. Thank you to all that helped in any way during the storm.

Speaking of the storm, Barry did interrupt one day (the 13th) but the FFA Alumni would like to remind the community that they will be going forward for the 20th. Pearl River Area FFA Alumni will have a “Sparkle and Shine Fundraiser” Bus Wash, to help support FFA students. Location for this fundraiser will be Pearl River High School, Saturday, July 20th between 8:30 am3pm. If needed, they can pick up your bus for washing and return it to your home nice and shiny. Purchase your ticket today at PRAFFAALUM@Gmail.com. Cost will be $150 per bus, $100 for a short bus.

Liars and Lunkers will host their 19th Kids Fishing Tournament on July 21st, starting at “first safe light”. This Free tournament will be located at Lock One and is for kids 3-12 years of age. BACKYARD FIGS

To most people, the month of July is full of summer vacations, weekend BBQ’s, and a lot of porch sitting as they wait out the long hot days of summer. However, the home gardener sees this month as a peak time for harvesting figs in the backyard fruit orchard. Figs are some of the most popular backyard fruit trees in the region. They are easy to grow and work well into an edible landscape theme. As fig trees start ripening this season, take notes on different varieties and learn the general growing requirements needed to produce your own crop in the future.

DOING SOME SUMMER CLEANING?

Will Afton Figs, like all other fruits trees, need full sun to be productive. Avoid shady areas with lots of trees and be aware of large structures that block out the sun. Look for areas out in the middle of the yard that receive sun in the morning, mid-day, and the afternoon. Water drainage is the second thing to look for when planning the location of your fig garden. Avoid areas that pool water after a rain event. Look for a well-drained area with decent slope. Once sun and drainage requirements are met, start looking into different fig varieties that grow well in the region.

COMMON FIG VARIETIES Celeste – The most widely planted fig in the area. A hardy plant that grows well throughout the region. The fruit is bronze to light brown with a light strawberry pulp and it ripens late June through July. Celeste is excellent for fresh eating, canning, and preserving.

Brown Turkey – Also known as ‘Texas Everbearing’, the ‘Brown Turkey’ fig produces medium to large fruits with brown to maroon colored skin and amber colored pulp. They main crop ripens two to three weeks after ‘Celeste’ and continues through August.

LSU Purple – A medium sized red to dark purple fig with a light red colored pulp. The main crop ripens in July. Produces a mild flavor with a high sugar content.

LSU Gold – A large yellow pear shaped fig with a light red, pink colored pulp. ‘LSU Gold’ is excellent quality for fresh eating, and preserving.

Figs are popular during the summer months because they are ripe and ready to eat. However, it is not recommended to plant trees just yet. It can be done but the best success occurs during the dormant season. November through February is the best time to plant or transplant figs in the landscape. Plant availability is also better in the fall because plant nurseries and garden centers start stocking fruit trees prior to the fall season. Look for potted plants with good clean foliage when selecting a starter plant. Three-gallon containers about 10-12 inches in diameter are the most common size available and work in every situation. Once rooted, fig trees grow very fast and fill out in no time.

PAPER SHREDDING SERVICES

Buying a potted plant is not the only way to get a new tree. Stem cuttings taken during the summer months and rooted in soil is referred to as softwood propagation. Use the soft wood from the current season’s growth to make 6-inch long cuttings. Cut stem pieces just below a node (area where leaves emerge from stem). Place cuttings in a suitable rooting medium such as sand, peat, or a mixture of the two with at least one node below and one node above the soil line. Rooting hormone powder encourages root develop but figs root easily and therefore do not require it. For the next 3-4 weeks, mist the cuttings with water a few times throughout the day.

Keep the cutting piece and soil slightly moist but not soggy. Once the cuttings start producing roots, gradually reduce the misting frequency. After 4 weeks place newly rooted plants into an area with partial sun for a couple of week before introducing them to full sun. You can raise the small plants in pots before transplanting them into the garden.

LOUISIANA SUMMER DRIVING TIPS Just like winter, summer has its own set of seasonal hazards that require your complete attention as a driver. Here are some to be particularly mindful of: • PEOPLE In your neighborhood, on city streets, in parking lots, and especially around parks, beaches, or any popular summer attraction, people are outdoors and often more focused on their enjoyment than on personal safety. Children are out of school and they might be playing in the street in a quiet neighborhood or chasing a basketball bouncing away from a driveway hoop. In summer, there is simply more human activity everywhere, and it’s up to you to slow down and stay alert.

• BIKES AND MOTORCYCLES Bicyclists and motorcyclists are also more active in good weather. Pay attention and take extra care in areas that attract cyclists.

• GLARE The sun’s glare is bright in summer, and even harsher when the sun is low and in your face.

Have your sunglasses handy if you’re not already wearing them, and be ready to flip down the visor so you don’t spend even a second driving while blinded by the glare.

• ROADWAY OBSTACLES: A busy roadway is no place for a sofa. But, with scores of people completing summer moves, you might just encounter one. Keep an eye out for roadway obstacles and plan as far ahead as possible on how to safely maneuver around them. Thunderstorms and tropical storms can further clutter the roads with debris, tree limbs, or even downed power lines.

• HEATSTROKE: Finally, don’t forget the dangers of summer parking. Children and pets left in parked cars are vulnerable to injury or even death from heatstroke. At an outside air temperature of 60 degrees, a car’s interior temperature can reach 110 degrees, which is a lethal level for children, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Rolling down car windows does not provide sufficient cooling, so don’t be tempted to leave children or pets for even a minute. It can be lethal—and in many states illegal—to leave children and pets alone. To help keep your car cool for when you return, park in the shade or place a removable sunshade in the windshield.

• ROAD TRIP SAFETY: A road trip with family and friends can make a memorable summer for both the right and the wrong reasons. Make it the right reasons with some careful planning and driving. There will be plenty of time for fun once you reach the campground, resort, or cabin.
