THE CANE MUTINEY - PART 1

ROSEAU MAY GO - AND WE’VE GOT REAL PROBLEMS THEN It didn’t seem like the sexiest junket of my 50-plus years in media: Join a bunch of politicos and media, scientists and learned folk at the Associated River Pilot headquarters in Venice in the middle of the last week of springtime. Listen to two hours of scientific mumbo-jumbo, eat a good lunch and spend the afternoon in the Delta Wildlife area in the Bird Foot delta region of lower Plaquemines Parish. And without a fishing pole.

But the venue was necessary and the information nearly as scary as a terrorist warning. A microscopic bug - a scale - illegally in the United States, probably from Japan or China, is attacking our roseau cane and turning what rivals bamboo in strength and flexibility into a mushy and brittle disaster.

Like our eroding coastline, caused primarily by Man’s intrusion into the wetlands and marshes with petroleum exploration and shipping economies, this threat is real. But Man has cut back on his intrusion into fragile ecosystems; the mealy bug is just getting started. it’s a threat that even motivated The New York Times to send a reporter and photographer to Wednesday’s session in lower Plaquemines Parish.

A concerned Plaquemines Parish landowner - Earl Armstrong - spotted the threat just last year. In that amount of time, this insidious bug has managed to destroy thousands of acres of the plant that experts call “the glue that keeps our wetlands together.”

Studies only began in March - three months ago - and what we saw on June 14th was chilling.

Imagine a Category 4 hurricane bearing down on us this late summer. In the past, hundreds of thousands of acres of roseau kept the winds and tidal surges at bay. This cane grows up to 15 feet or taller and is extremely sturdy at maturity. Believe me, no ordinary hurricane can mess with this stuff. It’s the vegetation hunters burn off in the early winter to make room for new, incredibly rapid growth and destroy the invasive insects that nest in the cane. But the mealy bug scale is no ordinary predator. This sucker burrows under the layers of vegetation making up the young cane, lays its eggs and either leaves or stays while the eggs hatch and corkscrew their way through the cane’s layers to the surface, where their presence of stained grey and brown splotches turns the cane to brown, then grey, making it brittle and soft and finally forcing its collapse into the water where it turns black and disintegrates into a mushy, floating blob before sinking to the bottom.

Sturdy roseau is the material that creates the tens of thousands of duck blinds along the Gulf Coast. Roseau can turn your hands into a bloody mess if it’s mishandled (I know firsthand after Wednesday) and it forms the habitat for millions of birds and mammals like feral hogs. Its presence creates the banks along which we fish, the banks that guide our boats from marina to open water, that outline the channels for our hundreds of ocean going ships that ply the Mississippi and beyond into most of America, to connect us to international waters flowing into the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean, making us the gateway to all America.

Now let’s talk money. Unfortunately, the funding to fight this invasion is almost as hard to pin down as the infestation itself. Before his shooting, officials were looking to Congressman Steve Scalise to lead the fight for funding. This, obviously, will be delayed in the light of Wednesday’s attack in Alexandria, Virginia where Scalise was critically wounded by a now deceased nut case from the fringes of Illinois and also from the fringes of lunacy. And what will be studied is also difficult. Do we look at stopping the further migration of the scale? Or do we try to increase its only known natural enemies - three thin wasps who slide under the stalk skins and kill up to 86% of the mealy bugs. But 86% is a high number; the average is much lower - less than half. Can we import a different strain of roseau that could resist these bugs?

Perhaps the similar roseau cane in the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem could be one answer. The cane there is being removed because much like Kudzu in the1980’s and 90’s, this roseau is taking over valuable lands, in this case, mud flats where birds and oysters reside and areas important to the blue crabs of the area. This strain of roseau - from Europe - is virtually immune to fire, grazing, smothering, mowing or dredging - but it could be a lesser threat to our area, where mud flats and other native grasses are not as vulnerable or valuable to the ecosystem as they are in the Chesapeake region. It may be kicking the can down the road a few years but we need those few years to develop more permanent and less destructive answers. If something in our ecosystem has to go, it’s still better than having the entire ecosystem go. Our number one concern is storm protection.

We can’t burn the native cane because in areas of heavy infestation where the cane has been virtually wiped out, we would be trying to burn water. There’s just not enough matter and density to burn it. And we certainly can’t burn the remaining healthy, mature roseau. This bright, deep green plant needs to be handled with kid gloves (in more ways than one)!

I’ve included some recent pictures showing the problem. The biologist with the map was on our tour last week; he was on the boat next to ours. This story is getting national attention. How often does The New York Times and the Associated Press send correspondents to Louisiana for a story of this genre? It’s a big deal, folks, and we’re going to continue to talk about it in our next issue - perhaps two issues. We’ll talk about where it is and where it’s going and might go. We’ll talk about threats to other crops. We’ll investigate what steps we can take as individuals to keep the bug from spreading when we’re fishing among the cane. And we’ll ask if you have any opinions on this matter.

PUNGENT & PINEY POP FLAVOR!

When did ginger and rosemary become partners in recipes? We now have so many cultural foods and mash up recipes, it’s hard to figure an origin for the dish anymore. Ginger origanally appears in Asian, Polynesian and Indian foods. Lately I have seen a few recipes mixing rosemary and ginger together. This must be a new food trend happening. I’m surprised two such strong flavors can actually work with each other. Rosemary leaves have a pure fragrance and a pungent, piney, slightly stimulating but bitter taste. A little bit goes a long way for flavor. Ginger has a pungent aroma and flavor, with more of a warm, spicey taste that is described as peppery. When you put rosemary and ginger together in a recipe, it’s like an explosion of flavor.

A real Pop in your mouth! Like Pop Rocks! Totaly unexpected.

I was at an Herb convention dinner last fall. I went to reach for an appetizer kabob made of Heirloom mini tomatoes, thick pieces of bacon, pickled ginger slices, baby mozzarella, sprinkled with rosemary. I took one bite and ....WOW! I ate seven. I was completely surprised by the delicious mix of flavors. The smokey bacon, citrus sweet tomato, pickled peppery ginger, the piney rosemary, and the cool cream of the mozzarella. I hadn’t tasted that anywhere. Make a platter of these for a starter this Fathers’ Day. For a main course, marinate baby pork tenderloins with a ginger rosemary influence. Instructions

Combine cider, syrup, sweet chili, and salt into a 4-cup glass measuring cup.

Crush the peppercorns and coriander, roughly, add to cider.

Add cinnamon & star anise. Mix. In a large Ziplock, place tenderloins, marinade and ginger and rosemary.

Remove air, seal and refrigerate for 4- to up to overnight.

Preheat oven to 450* 12 inch black skillet,(any skillet that can go into the oven) Remove pork from marinade, dry with paper towels. Discard marinade.

Rub pork with oil and add kosher salt and cracked pepper on the top of the stove, quickly sear all sides of pork, then place in the oven.

Cook t 125* , use an instant- read thermometer, about 15-20 minutes Remove from oven and cover with foil for resting time of 10 minutes.

Cut tenderloins diagonally into 1/2 nch thick slices. Sprinkle with salt and serve warm or room temp with a chutney, fig jam or pepper jelly.

Cider- Roasted Pork Tenderloins

2 Pork tenderloins( 1 to 1 1/2 pounds) 1( 12 ounce) bottle hard cider or apple juice 1/4 cup maple syrup 3 Tablespoons sweet chili sauce 2 Tablespoons salt 1 teaspoon black peppercorns 1/2 teaspoon whole coriander seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 star anise 1 inch piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced 1 1/2 Tablespoons rosemary leaves, chopped olive oil

Note: pork comes out perfect with an instant- read thermometer. They are inexpensive.

COACHING THE DIFFERENCE IN TIGERS FIRST CWS WIN When teams are close to each other in talent and temperament, the difference between winning and losing most of the time comes down to whose making the behind-the-scenes decisions. In the case of the Golden State Warriors, it was obvious this year that a chagrined and in pain, head coach Steve Kerr, was not going to let 2016 happen again while Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue depended more on the energies and will of his superstar, LeBron James, to determine how the series would end - just like in 2016. This time, Golden State prevailed in the NBA Finals.

In Omaha, the journey of the LSU Tigers will be determined more by the relatively quiet but highly knowledgeable and honest comments and instruction of one Paul Mainieri, their blue-ribbon head coach. His demeanor and experience has already guided this LSU team to its first win in Omaha, a 5 to 4 nail biter against a Florida State team known for its inability to win the big one. In 17 previous trips to Nebraska, the Seminoles have never won the title, forever giving them the title of The Susan Lucci of college baseball. Lucci was nominated 18 previous times for Best Actress in a soap opera before finally winning the award in 1999. Coach Mike Martin has failed 15 times in Omaha and he is the oldest active college baseball coach, even older than me (but I am not a coach, just an old guy). Florida State’s performance Saturday night against LSU looked like a soap opera; an LSU player scored from first base on a passed ball third strike play; two recognized errors but actually a three-error series of plays on a base hit and infield throwback by the Seminoles gave the Tigers a tie in the 8th inning. Meanwhile, Mainieri pulled starter Alex Lange after six innings in favor of starter Jared Poche’, who came in to relieve Lange and stabliize the Tigers while throwing 22 strikes in 30 pitches. With two outs in the ninth, freshman Zack Hess came in to nail down the win. He walked the first batter to put Seminoles on first and second but he redeemed himself against the last batter, dangerous Seminole batter Dylan Busby, who had led off the Florida State scoring in the first inning with a two-run homer off Lange. Hess caught the junior player looking at a breaking ball third strike to end the game.

Maineiri rarely makes a pitching move that’s a disaster and if its not working, he doesn’t hesitate to rectify it quickly. Compare that performance to that of head coach Rick Vanderhook of Cal State Fullerton, whose potty mouth three years ago following a rant against this team got him an administrative leave of absence. Vanderhook looked like he needed to be hooked after watching his aggravated demeanor in the dugout as his Titans gave up a four-run lead against national powerhouse Oregon State when one of his relievers gave up four bases on balls to the Beavers, walking in the tying run. He pulled his starter, who had only given up one run, despite the fact the kid hadn’t shown any real tendencies to be losing it on the mound. That game was lost in the dugout by Vanderhook, whose team has been one of three Cinderella teams in the postseason this year. But that run looks like it will end as the Titans will face Florida State in an elimination game. Coach Martin will not ream his team like Vanderhook nor will he wait past the point of no return to make a smart baseball decision. You can pretty much cross off Cal State Fullerton as the first team to leave Omaha at 0 and 2.

The other disgrace in Omaha is the attitude of Oregon State’s administration. Their team’s leading ERA pitcher, Luke Heimlich, was convicted of molestation of a young girl when he was 15 and she was 6. But the report said the molestation began when she was four. Model teen or not, Luke Heimlich should not ever walk onto a playing field again for the Beavers or anyone else. Major League baseball agrees. Of the 1,215 high school and college players selected last week in Monday’s major league draft, this projected first-rounder was not picked at all. His coach, Pat Casey, said he didn’t know about the situation until this month, when two reporters from The Oregonian broke the story. Heimlich, in what I refer to as his “Heimlich Maneuver”, decided not to accompany his team to Omaha, because it “could become a distraction” to his team. Ya think? And ya really think it’s not one now, also following the move to keep one other Oregon State star at home for a violation of team rules? That violation, hopefully, dId not involve sexual misconduct. So the Beavers were 55 and 4 this year, with a 22-game win streak before playing LSU. This week, they faced the nearly as hot LSU Tigers, whose only issue with molestation comes with Kramer Robertson’s fetish of abusing his collection of footwear when he’s not having a good day or night at the plate. The Tigers hopefully ended the Oregon State attempt to become the G.O.A.T. of college baseball teams. Because of their horse’s patooey of a college president and Oregon State head baseball coach Pat Casey, whose lack of cajones allowed Heimlich to step away from the CWS instead of dismissing him from the team, period. I really feel sorry for Oregon State fans, who take enough abuse at the hands of Oregon Duck fans and Phil Knight of Nike. My wife and I have a good friend in Oregon who supports the Beavers and I even dread talking to him about this situation.

Perhaps now we can look forward to a College World Series involving teams with well-balanced coaches and players who don’t have to register as sex offenders. And like the famous Casey in the poem, maybe this Pat Casey will strike out and there will be no joy in Corvallis. Pity.

ould those late night snacks be adding to your waistline and causing harm to your heart? A new study suggests that it’s better to eat during the daylight hours.

Nighttime snackers take note: eating late is harming your health, or so suggests a recent study out of San Diego State University.

While the study looked at fruit flies, and not humans, the findings do provide compelling reasons to investigate further whether there is a causal link between late night eating and heart health, amongst other health measures. I have been saying for some time, it is not just WHAT you eat, but WHEN you eat too.

Two-week-old fruit flies were divided into two groups: one group was allowed to eat a standard diet of cornmeal at anytime they wished and the second group was restricted to eating only within a twelve hour period. The amount of food each group ate was comparable.

At the end of a three-week period, each fruit fly was measured on several health measures, including weight and heart health. Fruit flies on a restricted schedule were found to have stronger hearts, better sleep patterns, and to have gained less weight than their eat-anytime friends.

The results were the same when repeated at five weeks and when the study was completed with older fruit flies. What is it about late-night snacking that compromises our health, including our heart and waistline?

Your body’s digestive system works hard each day to process the food you put into your mouth. Nighttime fasting—as I define it, no food after 7pm—allows your digestive system to take a much-deserved rest. Your stomach takes several hours to empty. A dinner or snack after 7pm likely doesn’t have time to make it through the system before you fall asleep.

Intermittent fasting is actually good for your body, in particular for individuals who are obese or have high blood pressure. Our ancestors went through periods of famine; it is natural to assume our body functioning accommodates times of food scarcity by working more efficiently. Fasting is thought to regulate the body’s hunger hormone (ghrelin), which can be out of whack for many people facing obesity. It also works as a reset button for your body: giving you a chance to clear out toxins and regulate insulin levels. It can be for those who require high-level intervention.

• Allowing your digestive system to “take a breather” promotes better sleep.

• Most of us are fairly sedentary after 7pm. Calories consumed past this time are more likely to be stored as fat, because our body does not have time to burn them off before we hit the hay.

• And then there is heart health, something our fruit fly researchers suggest is important to continue examining (I agree). Another preliminary study, this time on humans, found that men who ate late at night were 55% more likely to develop coronary heart disease.

We can all benefit from restricting our food to the daylight hours. The best health advice I can give my patients who seek weight loss support is to consume their most caloric meals earlier in the day, then start to slow consumption towards the end of the day to give the body time to rest, and to ensure that calories consumed have a chance to fuel the body. We also make poor food choices at night; fatigue makes us prone to cravings. So, ditch the late-night snacking habit and improve your heart health and waistline. Here’s to your Health! -Diane

School is out and now the kids are running off to camp. I have two fun food ideas to take with them as they rush off to camp and enjoy their summer fun. How about frozen yogurt pops for breakfast? Chop up some peaches, cherries, pineapple and mangoes. Add it to a favorite flavor yogurt, like lemon, coconut, strawberry or peach. Get dollar store ice cream pop containers.

Pour fruit & yogurt mix into pop containers and freeze. They can eat their pops on the way to swimming or camp. Another fun and flavorful tip. Fill their water bottles with lemon balm, mint , lemon, orange or lime slices and freeze the bottles. The next day the water will melt and taste infused with the fresh flavors. No artificial flavor and the herbs and fruit look pretty floating in the bottle. If you don’t want to use water bottles, fill your thermos with the herbs and citrus.

Within minutes, the water gets a great flavor. This is great for parties, too. I let the kids at my cooking camp, go pick mint, lemon balm and lemon grass. They smash it a bit, then put it into a large cooler. They love this water.

Roger Moore’s Passing Means No More Confusion With Pierce Brosnan At the age of 89, British actor Roger Moore passed away, having achieved humanitarian success that surpassed his cinematic career. Moore had the unenviable task of replacing Sean Connery as James Bond, the coolest, suavest secret agent in history. As Bond, Moore vamped the role so obviously that he was never recognized for his acting ability. No one could take Moore seriously as Bond; following the more rugged and worldly appearing Connery, it was a caricature that Moore played. He did star in seven of the genre which tied Connery’s appearances but never received the audience or critical accolades of the originator - which was only right. Moore’s role wasn’t much better than David Niven’s, who couldn’t have fought his way out of a wet paper bag and was ‘way too old to even be considered James Bond. Moore did much better as the British relative of Bart and Bret Maverick and perhaps his best acting series was, “The Saint”, in which he played Simon Templar, the enigmatic action hero who helped put wealthy crooks in jail while absconding with their fortunes. Moore stayed as Bond until he was 58; the aging did not play well with the tongue-in-cheek screen efforts of Moore. Perhaps the most damning criticism came when Pierce Brosnan assumed Moore’s role as Bond. As badly as Moore was at being cast as Bond, Brosnan was worse. An Irish version of Moore, Brosnan did not possess the gravitas of an actor who should play this role. His success on Remington Steele in the 1980’s made him a front and center candidate for the role following Moore’s reign. With similar comedic personna, both Moore and Brosnan were interlinked as the post-Connery faux Bonds, sort of like confusing the late Bill Paxton with Bill Pullman.
