Summertime Fun in Pearl River

Pearl River is never short of summertime fun for your family and friends. When out in the sun this summer don’t forget a great way to cool down is to go grab a snowball from one of our local snowball stands. The newest snowball-stand to open in town is the Pearl River Snack Shack located right across from our James Lavigne Park. Speaking of the park, our splash pad is back on and ready for the children. If you are really looking to get wet, you may want to head to the River for some boating fun or fish from the shore.

The Town of Pearl River will be celebrating the Fourth of July this year on July 3rd with opening ceremonies to begin at 6pm in downtown Pearl River (in front of Town Hall). Kids activities include the three-legged race, hula hoop contest, blind fold races, pie eating contest, sack races and the petting zoo. There will also be a fantastic firework show at dusk. Don’t forget your chairs. There will be lots of fun for the whole family.

Backyard Burgers

There is nothing more summer-time than Backyard Burgers. MY Backyard Burgers are nothing fancy, but by adding a few extra ingredients, flavors build and the sandwich only becomes better.

The most important part is not grilling burgers too long, or flipping them too often. This can dry out the meat by losing too much moisture. Never push down on the patty with a spatula. That only draws out every bit of natural juices. These burgers were made from ground chuck.

Hot coals add a bit smokier aroma to the burgers than gas grills, but both are wonderful when you’re eating in the ambiance of your own backyard.

The other components I add to my burgers are fresh sautéed spinach cooked in virgin olive oil, and a smooth white aged cheddar cheese that melts perfectly all placed on grilled rustic bread.

I believe in keeping food simple, but slightly innovative rather than the same old lettuce and tomato on a sandwich. Add your favorite barbeque sauce to enhance the taste prior to placing the cheese.

Whole Foods is convenient for purchasing fresh rustic bread, but if you have a specialty bakery near your home that’s even better.

A perfect side dish is grilled corn. Leaving the husk on the corn creates a natural steam. First, soak the ears in water for a few minutes then lay them on the barbeque before cooking the burgers. Turn them every so often. Allow the corn to cook for at least 20 minutes. The husk will become slightly charred, but the inside should be perfect. Once the corn is almost done, start grilling the burgers. When you’re ready to eat, peel the husk off the corn, and add unsalted butter with sea salt and fresh black pepper, and your set.

Backyard Burgers

Makes about 4 burgers 1 lb. ground chuck, make (4) ¼ lb. patties 2 tablespoons sea salt 2 teaspoons fresh black pepper 8 pieces of rustic bread 8 slices of aged white cheddar cheese 4 ears of corn with husk 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 bag fresh baby spinach 3 tablespoons virgin olive oil

Method: • Preheat the coals or gas grill • Once grill is hot add the corn and cook till done • Season the burgers with salt and pepper and lay on the grill when corn is almost ready • Heat a medium skillet and add the olive oil • Sauté the spinach for 2 minutes with a pinch of salt, and drain the water from the spinach • Slice your rustic bread into 1 inch thick slices • Once the burgers are cooked on one side, flip and add your favorite barbeque sauce • Flip the burgers and add sauce then lay the cheese on top to melt • Add your bread to the grill, but don’t let it burn • Build your burger with your choice of condiment, I use mayonnaise • Grilled bread with mayo, burger with cheese and spinach • Serve alongside the grilled buttered corn

MAGNIFICENT MAGNOLIAS As the weather turns hot, many landscape plants seem to idle as a way to cope with high temperatures of summer. Not the magnolia!

Several species within the genus of Magnolia bloom and thrive during the summer months. The magnificent white flowers are familiar to not only gardeners but also florists and interior designers. The name comes out of respect for a famous French botanist, Pierre Magnol, who lived in Montpellier, a city on the Mediterranean coast in southern France. Mr. Magnol was one of the first scientists to group plants by similar morphological features. This is one of the predicates of what we Will Afton know refer to as plant families. Carl Linnaeus, the creator of binomial nomenclature (scientific names) solidified the genus name when he used it to give southern magnolia its scientific name of Magnolia grandiflora.

The southern magnolia gets most of the spotlight but there are a few other species that are found in the trade and sought out by gardeners. The saucer magnolias (M. x soulangiana) are pretty when they bloom in late winter and early spring. Coming in between 20-30ft tall and 15-20ft wide, these magnolias feature blooms in different shades of pink. Sweetbay magnolias (M. virginiana) are native trees that reach 3-50ft tall and 20-30ft wide. In the wild they typically grown with a single trunk, but in the trade it is common to see more than one cutting in the pot, giving them a multi-trunked appearance. Sweetbay magnolias have a light green colored leaf with silvery undersides and produces white blooms in the summer. The bigleaf magnolia (M. macrophylla) is larger growing specimen averaging over 50ft tall and 20-30ft wide.

As the common name implies, the leaves can be up to 30 inches long and 8-12 inches wide. The flowers are some of the biggest averaging up to 14 inches or more in diameter. All of the species listed above are deciduous, meaning they lose all of their foliage in the fall and winter.

The most iconic species is the southern magnolia (M. grandiflora). These evergreen trees reach heights over 50ft tall and over 50ft wide. They produce large white fragrant flowers during the summer months. They are very versatile in the landscape. Southern magnolias can be used a basic backyard shade tree or they can be planted in a line to provide screening and privacy.

There are a couple of popular cultivars available in the trade. ‘D.D. Blanchard’ grows 30-50ft tall and 20-30ft. It still blooms the same fragrant white flowers, but the foliage sets it apart. The leaves are a dark green and the undersides are a rusty, almost orange color. ‘Little Gem’ is the most compact option available. It reaches 25-30ft tall and 10-15ft. Both the leaves and flowers are more compact than other cultivars of southern magnolia.

With all of the different selections of magnolia throughout the region it can be difficult to make a decision. Take a look at magnolias in the landscape as they bloom through the rest of the season. LOUISIANA SUMMER DRIVING TIPS Just like winter, summer has its own set of seasonal hazards that require your complete attention as a driver. Here are some to be particularly mindful of: • PEOPLE In your neighborhood, on city streets, in parking lots, and especially around parks, beaches, or any popular summer attraction, people are outdoors and often more focused on their enjoyment than on personal safety. Children are out of school and they might be playing in the street in a quiet neighborhood or chasing a basketball bouncing away from a driveway hoop. In summer, there is simply more human activity everywhere, and it’s up to you to slow down and stay alert.

• BIKES AND MOTORCYCLES Bicyclists and motorcyclists are also more active in good weather. Pay attention and take extra care in areas that attract cyclists.

• GLARE The sun’s glare is bright in summer, and even harsher when the sun is low and in your face.

Have your sunglasses handy if you’re not already wearing them, and be ready to flip down the visor so you don’t spend even a second driving while blinded by the glare.

• ROADWAY OBSTACLES: A busy roadway is no place for a sofa. But, with scores of people completing summer moves, you might just encounter one. Keep an eye out for roadway obstacles and plan as far ahead as possible on how to safely maneuver around them. Thunderstorms and tropical storms can further clutter the roads with debris, tree limbs, or even downed power lines.

• HEATSTROKE: Finally, don’t forget the dangers of summer parking. Children and pets left in parked cars are vulnerable to injury or even death from heatstroke. At an outside air temperature of 60 degrees, a car’s interior temperature can reach 110 degrees, which is a lethal level for children, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Rolling down car windows does not provide sufficient cooling, so don’t be tempted to leave children or pets for even a minute. It can be lethal—and in many states illegal—to leave children and pets alone. To help keep your car cool for when you return, park in the shade or place a removable sunshade in the windshield.

• ROAD TRIP SAFETY: A road trip with family and friends can make a memorable summer for both the right and the wrong reasons. Make it the right reasons with some careful planning and driving. There will be plenty of time for fun once you reach the campground, resort, or cabin.

With kitten season upon us, we think it’s a good time to talk about cats.

So many kittens, one cuter than the next, are available in the summer that it can be hard to decide which one to adopt.

If you are having that problem, here is something to consider. They will all grow up to be cats, so why not just adopt an adult cat? They often get overlooked at this time of year which is a shame. Rescued adult cats have so much to offer us as pets and, contrary to what you might have heard, they bond easily to a new person or family. Here are three wonderful rescued adult cats looking for a home.

Josie is a little tuxedo with a white mustache and white boots. Josie is shy when she meets strangers but she really loves attention. Josie would like someone to talk to who would also give her her favorite cat treats.

Slate is a pretty little solid gray kitty who loves to play with toys. She is very curious and wants to be involved in whatever is going on. Slate likes other cats and might be open to having a nice dog for a friend too.

Tara is a beautiful orange tabby, not a common color for a female cat.

Tara was rescued with her litter when she was still a kitten herself. She is calm and affectionate, a sweet lap cat.
