“STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS MUST REALLY HURT ME”

This old childhood chant has been undergoing a transformation for the past 25 years or so, culminating in a social setting so fragile and anxious that the average citizen is afraid to open their mouth. While our political leaders have abandoned decorum and civility for the most part, John Q. Public must guard against offending with just about any social, racial, sexual or common sense utterance lest they be scorned, ridiculed and verbally attacked by those in the “woke” nation and those who have forgotten that free speech doesn’t mean “You have to agree with me and I will defend to the death your right to say it without saying anything I don’t believe in”.

First of all, these so-called social engineers are in a huge minority. Second, they are enamored of themselves in so many “unwoke” ways that the hypocrisy just drips off of them. Third, they are masters of verbal distortion that comes with decades of smug, self-generated entitlement and misplaced sense of moral, mental and social superiority.

Back in the 40’s, a small group of Hollywood male actors had a club that would deflate such blather. At a party, while listening to some airhead, pompous fool or naive’ intellectual, one or more of the group in attendance would look at the offender and without any change in facial expression, loudly exclaim “Awww, bull…..!” and walk away. For the most part, the conversation was what the group member said it was.

It’s time to revive that club. First, it takes confidence: confidence that your Momma and Daddy didn’t raise no fool. Second, education. If you don’t know the subject, ignorance, like fatigue, makes cowards of us all. Third: fairness. Your views have merit; let the haters back off and give you some discussion room. It’s called debate and it happens in some circles today, but not on most television channels or publications. Fourth: your rights. Some are in the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Articles of Confederation. Others are divine-granted, from God or perhaps from another spiritual being. But you have the right to be heard in ways from civil discourse to emotional protests, as long as those not in your corner have their rights as well. Otherwise, welcome to China.

What Americans need to do today is reclaim their mojo. They have to recognize there are reasons for continuing to show caution in handling this Covid epidemic but they also need to understand that isolation and unscientific restriction creates as many problems, even more, than self-quarantining. Heroes are our medical and public workers who put themselves on the line each day but they are used to doing that. Other heroes are those who continue to stock our shelves and deliver our goods, man the convenience stores and auto shops and cut corners today to prepare their restaurants and other “nonessential” brick and mortar establishments to reopen tomorrow. In that way, we are all heroes if we have somehow sacrificed for this pandemic and we are ready to reclaim our need to be human each day by accepting some risk and using some common sense, like masking, whenever we can, even though it is not comfortable to many and does cause some fogging of glasses and plays physical hell with hearing aids.

Let’s get with the program before it becomes a pogrom. Most of you are doing it. Keep it up. Those who have not seen the path clearly need to refocus and add a little bit of positive from the other points of view without selling yours down the river. This country was founded by courage, conviction and compromise. It’s a heck of a formula that has made this nation the go-to destination for most of the world. Remember that the next time some financially secure talking head tries to stir the pot. They have someone stirring their pot 24/7 and it’s alway full.

He is the only Presidential candidate in history whose been placed in the Witness Protection Program…or should that be Witless?

That’s not even counting his alleged corruption baggage, his touchy-feely approach to women (or those who identify primarily as women, so sorry to be insensitive there, Joe) or his cozy relationship with China and his son’s employment connections which are under scrutiny. In other words, the Democrats have found someone nearly as unappealing as Hillary R was four years ago, for some, but not all, of the same reasons. Joe is an amazing racial profiling educator, identifying all real blacks only if they vote Democratic. In an age of dumb and ignorant political decision makers, Joe Biden is rapidly making his indelible mark for the ages. It really is a sad state for the Democrats to see what has fallen out of their presidential candidate gumball machine. Someone must have switched it with the nuts dispenser.

Looking for a tried and true plant that can withstand the long, hot days of Louisiana summers? Hibiscus plants are extremely common in South Louisiana gardens during the summer months. The genus Hibiscus belongs to the family Malvaceae which is made up of several hundred different species all native to warm-temperate, subtropical, tropical regions. This explains why they thrive during the warmest months of the year in Louisiana.

There are a few hibiscus species native to the United States including Louisiana. The most common is the crimson eyed rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos. It can be found throughout the state growing in ditches along the roadside. You will notice them by their large 4-6-inch flowers with white petals and crimson red throats. Another native variety, H. coccineus also can be found growing throughout the southern United States where it is known as the native red hibiscus or Texas star hibiscus. Flowering usually doesn’t begin until mid to late summer when the plants slow down in growth and roots are somewhat constricted.

The Confederate Rose, H. mutabilis, is a common tree-like shrub planted throughout the state.

It can reach heights of 10 and 12 feet. The species name “mutabilis” hints at the plant’s most distinguishing characteristic. The flowers open white in the morning and fade to pink later in the evening before they close. Even though Confederate Rose is considered a perennial plant a hard freeze might kill it back to the ground, but with proper mulching the plant should return the following spring.

Most of us should be well acquainted with the Rose of Sharon plant, H. syriacus. A native of Asia this hibiscus has been popular to gardeners dating back to the Europeans in the year 1600. Due to relative ease of care and lack of pest problems, it is not uncommon for Rose of Sharon to live many years in the landscape. There are many well-known cultivars grown in the nursery trade to choose from. Try looking for the LSU AgCenter Super Plant selection from the spring of 2013, ‘Aphrodite’. It is reach heights of 8-10 feet tall and produces beautiful rose red blooms with dark magenta centers.

Last and definitely not least, the most popular hibiscus is the tropical hibiscus, H. rosa-sinensis.

Some home improvement stores bring these in by the thousands as soon as spring weather arrives. Of all of the other species of hibiscus written in this article, H. rosa-sinensis is the most tender when it comes to cool weather. On the other hand, these bushes will bloom all during the warm season. After the first frost some die back will occur but when it does, go ahead and prune the whole bush to the ground and cover it with mulch. If you can protect the root system during the cold months there will be a good possibility of survival to enjoy it the following year.

As you can see, there are many different varieties of hibiscus available to us gardeners. They excel during the summer months when other plants barely survive. Get out and visit a plant nursery or garden center this season and find out what hibiscus varieties are available. Whether you go with an old standby or try something new, you can go wrong with hibiscus.
